ABSTRACT Objective We aimed to share our experience in implementing a structured system for COVID-19 lung findings, elucidating key aspects of the lung ultrasound score to facilitate its standardized clinical use beyond the pandemic scenario. Methods Using a scoring system to classify the extent of lung involvement, we retrospectively analyzed the ultrasound reports performed in our institution according to COVID-RADS standardization. Results The study included 69 thoracic ultrasound exams, with 27 following the protocol. The majority of patients were female (52%), with ages ranging from 1 to 96 years and an average of 56 years. Classification according to COVID-RADS was as follows: 11.1% in category 0, 37% in category 1, 44.4% in category 2, and 7.4% in category 3. Ground-glass opacities on tomography correlated with higher COVID-RADS scores (categories 2 and 3) in 82% of cases. Ventilatory assessment revealed that 50% of cases in higher COVID-RADS categories (2 and 3) required second-line oxygen supplementation, while none of the cases in lower categories (0 and 1) utilized this support. Conclusion Lung ultrasound has been widely utilized as a diagnostic tool owing to its availability and simplicity of application. In the context of the pandemic emergency, a pressing need for a focused and easily applicable assessment arose. The structured reporting system, incorporating ultrasound findings for stratification, demonstrated ease of replicability. This system stands as a crucial tool for screening, predicting severity, and aiding in medical decisions, even in a non-pandemic context. ABSTRACT Objective: Abdominal ultrasonography is widely used to evaluate suspected cases of appendicitis. Objective descriptions of the direct and indirect signs of appendicitis result in varied assessments of its likelihood. This study introduces the Appendix Imaging Reporting and Data System (APENDIC-RADS) to standardize the reporting of appendix ultrasound findings. Methods: This single-center retrospective study included consecutive patients of all ages who underwent abdominal ultrasonography for the investigation of acute appendicitis. The primary outcome was histopathological confirmation of acute appendicitis post-surgery. The imaging findings were classified into five categories: APENDIC-RADS 0, where the appendix cannot be visualized; APENDIC-RADS 1, indicating a normal appendix; APENDIC-RADS 2, describing an appendix that is likely normal but only partially visualized; APENDIC-RADS 3, appendicitis cannot be ruled out due to uncertain features and APENDIC-RADS 4, acute appendicitis. Results: A total of 747 patients were assessed for suspected acute appendicitis using ultrasonography. Of the diagnosed patients, 52% were male, primarily exhibiting symptoms such as nausea and/or vomiting (60%), right iliac fossa pain (54%), and sudden decompression in the right iliac fossa (24%). Stratification into APENDIC-RADS categories revealed a significant variation in the incidence of acute appendicitis, with incidence rates of 4.5% for category 0 and 0.7%, 2.2%, 11.5%, and 93.5% for categories 1 to 4, respectively (p<0.001). The APENDIC-RADS showed excellent discriminative ability, evidenced by an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.950 (95%CI=0.899-1). Conclusion: APENDIC-RADS categorization demonstrated excellent performance in standardizing the ultrasound-determined probability of acute appendicitis. Its implementation could improve physician communication and standardization of patient management. likelihood APENDICRADS APENDIC RADS (APENDIC-RADS Methods singlecenter single center postsurgery. postsurgery post surgery. surgery post-surgery visualized 2 3 4 Results 74 52 male andor or 60%, 60 60% , (60%) 54%, 54 54% (54%) 24%. 24 24% . ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others. publications problem uptodate up date classifications context exception (CTFB http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/, httpfaunajbrjgovbr http //fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ , jbrj gov br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/) 2015 Brazil 80 specialists 1 2024 133691 133 691 133,69 125138 125 138 125,13 82.3%, 823 82 3 (82.3% 102000 102 000 102,00 7.69%, 769 7 69 (7.69% 11000 11 11,00 . 3,567 3567 567 (3,56 2,292 2292 2 292 (2,29 1,833 1833 833 (1,83 1,447 1447 447 (1,44 1000 1,00 831 (83 628 (62 606 (60 520 (52 50 users science health biology law anthropology education others http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ faunajbrjgovbr //fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ 201 8 202 13369 13 133,6 12513 12 125,1 82.3% (82.3 10200 10 00 102,0 7.69% 76 6 (7.69 1100 11,0 3,56 356 56 (3,5 2,29 229 29 (2,2 1,83 183 83 (1,8 1,44 144 44 (1,4 100 1,0 (8 62 (6 60 52 (5 5 http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br 20 1336 133, 1251 125, 82.3 (82. 1020 0 102, 7.69 (7.6 110 11, 3,5 35 (3, 2,2 22 (2, 1,8 18 (1, 1,4 14 4 ( 82.
Abstract Background Evaluation and treatment of primary and secondary headaches is a global public health challenge. Recognizing the epidemiological impact of headaches, a group of researchers linked to the Brazilian Headache Society proposed the Brazilian Headache Registry and drew up its initial protocol. Objective Here we describe the methods and preliminary data obtained from the pilot study. Methods This was a multicenter longitudinal observational study conducted between September 2020 and August 2021. Prospective data were collected in three specialist centers for headache care in states in southern and southeastern Brazil. Patients aged 18 years or older who sought care for headache in tertiary centers and who agreed to participate in the study, were considered eligible. Results Sixty-six patients were included in the pilot study: 43 (65%) from Rio Grande do Sul state and 23 (35%) from Minas Gerais state. Overall, 90% were female, and the subjects' mean age was 38.2 ± 11.2 years. Primary headaches accounted for 85.3% of the diagnoses made. Among secondary headaches, medication overuse headache was the most frequent type (7.1%). Conclusions The pilot study showed the feasibility of the research protocol developed for tertiary centers. The Brazilian Headache Registry will form a source of longitudinal data with the aim of contributing to better characterization of the various phenotypes of patients with primary and secondary headaches, and to detailing the use of health resources and identifying predictors of better clinical outcomes. challenge 202 2021 Brazil 1 eligible Sixtysix Sixty six 4 65% 65 (65% 2 35% 35 (35% Overall 90 female subjects 382 38 38. 112 11 11. 853 85 3 85.3 made 7.1%. 71 7.1% . 7 (7.1%) outcomes 20 6 (65 (35 9 8 85. 7.1 (7.1% (6 (3 7. ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to characterize reference bacteria strains, belonging to the genus Bacillus and species of correlated genera, by simplified morphological and biochemical methods. The morphological characterization is based on the aspects of the colonies, as well as cytomorphology of the species, by optical and scanning microscopy. For biochemical characterization, the sensitivity test to antimicrobials by disk-diffusion is performed. Moreover, the strains were characterized by extracting intracellular proteins. Characteristics such as shape, color, and consistency of the colonies, in addition to the type of spore and production of protein crystals were determinants for the morphological characterization of these species. The antibiogram revealed high resistance to β-lactam group antibiotics, in species of Bacillus cereus s.l group. In Bacillus subtilis s.l. group there was high susceptibility to antibiograms, mainly for species of B. subtilis. The protein profile provided specific protein patterns for some species, mainly bands of 130 e 65 kDa for B. thuringiensis, 140 e 130 kDa for Lysinibacillus sphaericus, and 115 kDa for Brevibacillus laterosporus. Our results showed that the morphological and biochemical characterizations, provided a simple identification, with easy interpretation, and low cost. genera methods colonies microscopy diskdiffusion disk diffusion performed Moreover proteins shape color βlactam β lactam antibiotics sl s l antibiograms B 13 6 thuringiensis 14 sphaericus 11 laterosporus characterizations identification interpretation cost 1

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Hesitation and refusal to take a second dose of the vaccine for coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) are prevalent. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to identify predictive factors for hesitation or refusal and describe groups with higher rates of vaccine hesitancy. DESIGN AND SETTING: A cross-sectional study in Assis City, Brazil. METHODS: The study included adults who passed the due date for taking the COVID-19 second dose vaccine. Participants were recruited in December 2021 using a mobile-based text message. Sociodemographic and clinical data and reasons for hesitance were collected. The outcome was the attitude towards completing the recommended second dose of the vaccine. Bivariate and multivariate Poisson analyses were performed to determine the adjusted predictors. RESULTS: Participants between 30–44 years of age had a 2.41 times higher prevalence of hesitation than those aged 18–29 years. In addition, people who had adverse events or previously had COVID-19 had 4.7 and 5.4 times higher prevalences of hesitation, respectively (P value < 0.05). CONCLUSION: We found a significant group of adults aged between 30–44 years who refused the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Furthermore, those who reported adverse effects after the first dose and those who had COVID-19 previously were a significant group for refusal. ABSTRACT Chickpea is a commercially exploited crop on a relatively new scale in Brazil, that is why, little information on the main pests is available. Mostly caterpillars showing Heliothinae morphological characteristics have emerged in production areas. In order to point out the species of these insects in chickpea fields produced in the Federal District and the surrounding areas, this study aimed to determine the morphological and molecular identification of these invertebrates in order to assist producers in pest management in a more sustainable way. Caterpillars were hand-collected directly from the plants in six sites and the moth collection was collected using light traps in four sites, monthly, in 2017 and 2018. The morphological identification was made through the adult insect genitalia and the subsequent molecular identification was performed using the cytochrome oxidase I enzyme with the quantitative PCR technique, which resulted in the development of an efficient and low-cost DNA extraction protocol to be used in samples under unfavorable storage conditions. Morphological and molecular studies showed the presence of Helicoverpa armigera, Helicoverpa zea, Chloridea virescens and Chloridea subflexa, with a predominance of Chloridea virescens in chickpea plants. Chloridea subflexa was verified for the first time feeding on chickpeas in Brazil. ABSTRACT Objective Compare the results of medial unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) using a mobile platform and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in patients with isolated medial osteoarthritis. Methods Retrospectivecross-sectional study. Preoperative radiographs of 602 patientswho underwent knee arthroplastybetween February 2017 and February 2020 were evaluated. Isolated medial osteoarthritis was found in 125 patients. Of these, 57 underwent UKA and 68 TKA. With chart analysis and telephone interviews, we compared patients’ clinical outcomes and degree of satisfaction. The statistical analysis used a confidence level of 5%. Results The group of UKA patients obtained 65.8% of favorable results against 79.1% of those undergoing TKA in the function questionnaire (p<0.0001). The complication rate was statistically similar between the groups(p>0.5). Most patients were satisfied or very satisfied in both groups (88.6% of UKA and 91.2% of TKA) (p>0.999). Conclusion Patients submitted to UKA or TKA have presented the same degree of satisfaction and rate of postoperative complications when comparing patients with isolated medial osteoarthritis. UKA patients had less favorable results onthe clinical functional questionnaire than patients undergoing total arthroplasty. Level Of Evidence III;Retrospective Study.
Abstract Administration of diets rich in highly fermentable carbohydrates and low fiber content can cause an imbalance between the microorganisms in the rumen with consequent ruminal acidosis. This problem can cause lesions in the rumen wall, often progressing to rumenitis. The purpose of the present was to characterize macroscopic and microscopic ruminal lesions observed in confined feedlot cattle with claw lesions or liver abscess. A total of 1060 bovines were evaluated via postmortem examination. Claw lesions were identified in 88, liver abscess in 10, and macroscopic rumen lesions in 230 bovines; furthermore, 178 rumens were characterized with hyperkeratosis, 41 with hyperemia, 9 with ulcer, and 2 with neoplasia. The 98 bovines with claw lesions and liver abscess were selected for histopathological examination. Of these, macroscopic lesions were noted in 23 and microscopic lesions in 23 animals. Of the 23 animals that presented macroscopic lesions, 10 showed the same changes observed under microscopy. Seven cases of hyperkeratosis were diagnosed in the macro and microscopic evaluation. Of the 5 cases of hyperemia verified on macroscopy, 2 cases were identified via microscopy, and 1 case of ulcer identified through macroscopy and microscopy. The microscopic evaluation of the rumens allowed the identification of lesions in animals with claw lesions that did not present macroscopic rumen alterations.

ABSTRACT The Bacillus thuringiensis bacterium has demonstrated an effective potential in the control of several agricultural pests, among them nematodes. This study aimed to standardize and establish a methodology of bioassays of B. thuringiensis and Meloidogyne incognita with the use of resorcinol, select B. thuringiensis strains toxic to M. incognita in vitro and molecularly identify the presence of the cry6 gene in B. thuringiensis strains. Second-stage juveniles were subjected to resorcinol doses, verifying that the concentration of 0.2 % did not cause mortality and provided the Cry6A toxin ingestion. Thereafter, 16 B. thuringiensis strains were tested in the presence or absence of resorcinol, resulting in mortality rates of 4-36 %. Among the B. thuringiensis strains analyzed for the presence of the cry6 gene, only one was detected (S1617).

ABSTRACT The Mate Laranjeira Railway, with a 60 cm gauge and a maximum length of 68 km, was privately built in the west of the Brazilian State of Paraná, in the second decade of the 20th century, by the large company that explored, at that time, the native forests of Paraguayan tea (Ilex paraguayensis) located in the extreme south of the neighboring State of Mato Grosso. The route was designed to bypass the Seven Falls, which interrupted the Paraná River navigation nearby the 24th parallel South, and thus facilitate the transport of the tea towards its main consumer market: Argentina. By connecting two navigable stretches of the Paraná River, the railroad could facilitate the occupation and exploration of the entire region, which until then was considered remote and wild, and therefore attracted the attention of the administrators from the State of Paraná and the Brazilian national state. In this article I seek to analyze this railroad as a member of the industrial railways category, addressing its construction history, its technical operating conditions and also the dispute over its opening to public traffic. The sources include legislation, periodicals, government reports, statistical data and documents from the company itself, as well as reports from travellers and other non-academic works. The main conclusion is that, although useful for private purposes, the railway, due to its intrinsic limitations, was not able to play a public role of great relevance.

ABSTRACT Objective To stratify ultrasound samples in a pediatric population undergoing evaluation for acute appendicitis to examine the variability in cecal appendix diameter, in different age groups, and to determine whether there is a prevalent value for each age group. Methods A retrospective cross-sectional study with 196 children aged 0 to 15 years. Data were extracted from reports of ultrasound examinations carried out between 2008 and 2015. Children with sonographic diagnosis of appendicitis or other signs of periappendiceal inflammation were excluded. Results The evaluation of the anteroposterior measurement of the cecal appendix revealed a mean diameter of 4.14mm (standard deviation: 0.93mm; 95%CI: 3.86-4.14). Cecal appendix diameter did not differ significant between age groups. Conclusion Evaluation of the anteroposterior diameter of the cecal appendix in centimeters in a sample of 196 children aged 0 to15 years revealed a mean diameter of 4.14mm (standard deviation, 0.93mm. There were no significant differences in cecal appendix diameter following stratification by age. Results indicate a single value can be adopted for mean cecal appendix diameter in pediatric populations.
