ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others. publications problem uptodate up date classifications context exception (CTFB http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/, httpfaunajbrjgovbr http //fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ , jbrj gov br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/) 2015 Brazil 80 specialists 1 2024 133691 133 691 133,69 125138 125 138 125,13 82.3%, 823 82 3 (82.3% 102000 102 000 102,00 7.69%, 769 7 69 (7.69% 11000 11 11,00 . 3,567 3567 567 (3,56 2,292 2292 2 292 (2,29 1,833 1833 833 (1,83 1,447 1447 447 (1,44 1000 1,00 831 (83 628 (62 606 (60 520 (52 50 users science health biology law anthropology education others http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ faunajbrjgovbr //fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ 201 8 202 13369 13 133,6 12513 12 125,1 82.3% (82.3 10200 10 00 102,0 7.69% 76 6 (7.69 1100 11,0 3,56 356 56 (3,5 2,29 229 29 (2,2 1,83 183 83 (1,8 1,44 144 44 (1,4 100 1,0 (8 62 (6 60 52 (5 5 http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br 20 1336 133, 1251 125, 82.3 (82. 1020 0 102, 7.69 (7.6 110 11, 3,5 35 (3, 2,2 22 (2, 1,8 18 (1, 1,4 14 4 ( 82. OBJECTIVES: To prospectively evaluate demographic, anthropometric and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in pediatric patients with laboratory-confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) METHODS: This was a longitudinal observational study of surviving pediatric post-COVID-19 patients (n=53) and pediatric subjects without laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 included as controls (n=52) was performed. RESULTS: The median duration between COVID-19 diagnosis (n=53) and follow-up was 4.4 months (0.8-10.7). Twenty-three of 53 (43%) patients reported at least one persistent symptom at the longitudinal follow-up visit and 12/53 (23%) had long COVID-19, with at least one symptom lasting for >12 weeks. The most frequently reported symptoms at the longitudinal follow-up visit were headache (19%), severe recurrent headache (9%), tiredness (9%), dyspnea (8%), and concentration difficulty (4%). At the longitudinal follow-up visit, the frequencies of anemia (11% versus 0%, p=0.030), lymphopenia (42% versus 18%, p=0.020), C-reactive protein level of >30 mg/L (35% versus 0%, p=0.0001), and D-dimer level of >1000 ng/mL (43% versus 6%, p=0.0004) significantly reduced compared with baseline values. Chest X-ray abnormalities (11% versus 2%, p=0.178) and cardiac alterations on echocardiogram (33% versus 22%, p=0.462) were similar at both visits. Comparison of characteristic data between patients with COVID-19 at the longitudinal follow-up visit and controls showed similar age (p=0.962), proportion of male sex (p=0.907), ethnicity (p=0.566), family minimum monthly wage (p=0.664), body mass index (p=0.601), and pediatric pre-existing chronic conditions (p=1.000). The Pediatric Quality of Live Inventory 4.0 scores, median physical score (69 [0-100] versus 81 [34-100], p=0.012), and school score (60 [15-100] versus 70 [15-95], p=0.028) were significantly lower in pediatric patients with COVID-19 at the longitudinal follow-up visit than in controls. CONCLUSIONS: Pediatric patients with COVID-19 showed a longitudinal impact on HRQoL parameters, particularly in physical/school domains, reinforcing the need for a prospective multidisciplinary approach for these patients. These data highlight the importance of closer monitoring of children and adolescents by the clinical team after COVID-19.

Abstract Doubts remain about the adequate iron (Fe) concentration in nutrient solutions used for optimal plant growth, especially in gramineae like sugar cane (Saccharum officinarum L.). Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Fe concentrations on growth, green color index and dry matter (DM) production in sugar cane cultivated in a nutrient solution. The hypothesis was that the nutrient solution must contain higher Fe concentration, which is used by the plant for optimum development. The study was conducted in a greenhouse with the variety IAC SP 93 3046, cultivated in pots (7.5 L) with aerated nutrient solution. The experimental design was completely randomized with five replicates and four treatments (0; 184; 368 and 551.4 μmol L-1 of Fe-EDDHA). For data analysis we used ANOVA with an F test (p≤0.05). Variables evaluated were plant height, stem diameter, leaf area, green color index, DM production, total Fe accumulation and we also performed visual diagnosis. Both leaves and roots had greater Fe accumulation of 0.28 g and 2 g per pot, respectively, on the Fe-EDDHA concentration of 184 μmol L-1. Green color index and nutrient accumulation were greater with increased FeEDDHA concentrations. The concentration of 184 μmol L-1 met the needs of the plant, providing a 12.2 mm diameter, 25 cm height, 750 cm2 leaf area and 4.10 g of DM per pot, 2.18 g of roots per pot and 6.28 g of whole plant per pot. The use of Fe-EDDHA chelate increased both the element’s buildup in plants and green color index; and 184 μmol L-1 Fe was the adequate concentration to supply the plant’s needs, promoting satisfying DM production.

Reactions of methyl 4-O-allyl-2,3-di-O-benzyl-6-deoxy-6-(3-iodobenzoylamino)-α-D-galactopyranoside, its gluco epimer, methyl 2,3-di-O-benzyl-6-deoxy-6-(3-iodobenzoylamino)-4-O-(1-pentenyl)-α-D-glucopyranoside and its ortho-regioisomer with tri-n-butyltin hydride were performed in different conditions. Depending on reaction conditions the three meta-iodo isomers gave a surprising amount of biphenyl compounds. The 2-iodo isomer led only to the undesired but expected hydrogenolysis product. No cyclized products were isolated in all the reactions. The structures of the new biphenyl products were elucidated by ¹H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, DEPT, COSY, HMQC and HMBC experiments and ESI-MS/MS. Mechanisms for the formation of these new biphenyl derivatives and hypotheses to explain the different outcomes for radical reactions of 3- or 2-iodobenzamides were presented.

The tri-n-butyltin hydride-mediated reaction of methyl 2,3-di-O-benzyl-4-O-trans-cinnamyl -6-deoxy-6-(2-iodobenzoylamino)-alpha-D-galactopyranoside afforded an unexpected aryltributyltin compound. The structure of this new tetraorganotin(IV) product has been elucidated by ¹H, 13C NMR spectroscopy, COSY and HMQC experiments and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). The formation of this new compound via a radical coupling reaction and a radical addition-elimination process is discussed.

This paper describes a self-oscillating electronic ballast, having fixed switching frequency, to supply four independent fluorescent lamps, with high power factor. To provide the power factor correction it was studied the modifications of the valley-fill filter, presented in the literature, choosing one that meets the IEC 61000-3-2 Class C requirements, about the input current distortion. To drive the switches it was proposed a modification at the conventional self-oscillating driver, novel in the literature, making it independent on the load of the ballast. So, it is built up the prototype and showed the experimental results.

This paper presents a self-oscillating electronic ballast employing a modified valley-fill filter in order to meet IEC 61000-3-2 Class C requirements. In order to overcome the drawback of high fluorescent lamp current crest factor, which is inherent to the valley fill filter, it is employed a frequency modulation system that keeps the crest factor lower than 1.7 limit using a simple and low cost circuit. This system uses the resonant filter features added to the possibility to control self-oscillating frequency using electronic ballast bus voltage feature. Simulation and experimental results are presented to demonstrate the system performance.

This paper presents a simple alternative of electronic ballast operating in self-sustained oscillating mode with dimming capability for fluorescent lamps. A simple modification in the gate driver circuit allows the lamp to dim without compromising the simplicity, reliability, and low cost which characterize the self-oscillating electronic ballast. A qualitative analysis is presented to explain the behavior of the proposed self-oscillating electronic ballast with dimming feature. In addition the stability and the key equations for the design are derived using the extended Nyquist criterion and describing function method. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the performance and to validate the analysis carried out.
