ABSTRACT The hydrodynamic conditions to which hydraulic structures such as spillways and stilling basins of dams are submitted under given conditions favor the occurrence of cavitation, damaging the concrete surfaces. This damage may be intensified by the cumulative effect of the successive hydrologic events that characterize the operational regime of these structures. Thus, the purpose of the present article is to identify the propensity for damage caused by cavitation by using SpillwayPro software to estimate the hydraulic parameters of flow (mean velocities and cavitation indices) based on information on smooth chute spillways at the Furnas, Luiz Carlos Barreto de Carvalho and Batalha hydroelectric power plants. The results shown were compared to the critical limits of cavitation defined in the literature on photographic records of inspections performed in the field. The highest mean velocities estimated coincided with the zones where the worst potential damage of the structures was identified. Neste artigo, introduz-se uma abordagem para estimar parâmetros característicos do dimensionamento de bacias de dissipação. Os desvios padrão das amostras de pressão de 24 ressaltos hidráulicos foram analisados em todo o eixo longitudinal da bacia de dissipação, e as posições de flutuação de pressão máxima foram identificadas. Em seguida, foram calculadas as pressões médias e extremas que ocorrem nesta posição. ABSTRACT Turbulent flow is responsible for a significant portion of damages and failures in dams. This paper sought to introduce novel approaches to the estimation of typical parameters used in the design of stilling basins. The standard deviations of pressure samples of 24 hydraulic jumps were analysed throughout the stilling basin longitudinal centreline, and the positions of maximum pressure fluctuation were identified. Next, mean and extreme pressures occurring at this position were calculated. Finally, these parameters were plotted against the inflow Froude number and curves were adjusted to the data. The position where maximum turbulence of undular, weak and oscillating jumps occurs varies according to the Froude number. Steady and strong jumps are more likely to induce negative pressures on the stilling basin. Este trabalho analisa as pressões hidrodinâmicas sobre os degraus de um modelo físico (com inclinação de calha de 53,13º) submetido a diferentes condições de aeração. Comparando-se os resultados com diferentes coeficientes de entrada de ar no escoamento, concluiu-se que a incorporação de ar não altera de forma generalizada todos os parâmetros estatísticos associados às pressões hidrodinâmicas sobre os degraus. Contudo, com a inserção de ar no escoamento, observou-se aumento nos valores mínimos de pressão medidos na região do impacto do jato e logo a jusante. ABSTRACT Aerator systems promote additional insertion of air into the flow and can reduce the risk of cavitation and consequent damage to hydraulic structures. This work analyzes the hydrodynamic pressures on the steps of a physical model (with a chute inclination of 53.13º) subjected to different aeration conditions. When comparing the results with different air intake coefficients in the flow, it was concluded that the incorporation of air does not change in a generalized way all the statistical parameters associated with hydrodynamic pressures on the steps. However, with the insertion of air in the flow, there was an increase in the minimum pressure values measured in the region of the jet impact and downstream. RESUMO Vertedouros em degraus têm sua operação limitada a faixas de vazões devido ao risco de ocorrência do fenômeno de cavitação e erosão em seus degraus. Como há demanda por vertedouros com possibilidade de extravasamento de maiores vazões, procura-se aumentar a concentração de ar do escoamento, que pode ocorrer através da instalação de pilares no vertedouro, para assim proteger a estrutura contra os referidos danos. O objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar as características do escoamento e as pressões extremas mínimas e máximas com probabilidade de 0,1% e 99,9% de não-excedência, atuantes nas quinas dos degraus do vertedouro com aeração induzida por pilares, através da análise experimental em um modelo físico. Baseado nos resultados obtidos foi definido o comportamento do escoamento e foram propostas equações de previsão das pressões extremas que ocorrem ao longo do vertedouro em degraus com aeração induzida por pilares.

ABSTRACT The operation of stepped spillways is limited by a range of discharges due to the risk of occurrence of the cavitation phenomenon and erosion on its steps. Since there is a demand for spillways with the possibility of overflow of greater discharges, the designs seek to increase the air concentration of the flow, which can occur through the installation of piers in the spillway in order to protect the structure from the above mentioned damage. The aim of this work is to analyze flow characteristics and extreme minimum and maximum pressures with non-exceedance probability of 0.1% and 99.9% acting next to the step edges of the spillway with aeration induced by piers through an experimental analysis in a physical model. Based on the results obtained, flow behavior was defined and equations for predicting the extreme pressures that occur along the stepped spillway with aeration induced by piers were proposed.

RESUMO Vertedouros em degraus dissipam uma grande quantidade de energia durante a passagem do escoamento pela calha, porém essas estruturas tem sua operação limitada devido a riscos de danos por cavitação. A aeração induzida pode agir protegendo a calha de concreto através da concentração de ar próximo ao fundo do canal. Além disso, algumas pesquisas têm indicado que a presença de ar em escoamentos pode reduzir as pressões médias. A presente pesquisa tem por objetivo analisar as pressões médias, coeficiente de entrada de ar e o comportamento do escoamento sobre uma calha em degraus com dois diferentes defletores, comparando os resultados com um escoamento com aeração natural. Além da influência no ponto de impacto do jato, a aeração induzida não alterou, significantemente, as pressões medias em relação a um escoamento com aeração natural. O coeficiente de entrada de ar, assim como a posição de impacto do jato, é maior para o defletor mais extenso e, embora bolhas de ar possam ser identificadas ao longo de toda a extensão da calha, devido à entrada de ar através da superfície inferior do escoamento, a aeração induzida não antecipou a posição de afloramento da camada limite.

ABSTRACT Stepped spillways can dissipate a great amount of energy during the flow passage over the chute, however these structures have limited operation due to the risk of cavitation damage. The induced aeration may protect the concrete chute through the air concentration near the channel bottom. Furthermore, some research studies have indicated that the presence of air in flows may reduce the mean pressures. The present research aims to analyze mean pressures, air entrainment coefficient and flow behavior over a stepped spillway with aeration induced by two different deflectors, comparing the results to natural aeration flow. Despite the jet impact influence, the induced aeration does not change significantly the mean pressures compared to natural aeration flow. The air entrainment coefficient, as well as the jet impact position, is higher for the deflector with the longer extension and, although air bubbles can be seen throughout the extension of the chute due to the air entrainment through the inferior flow surface, the induced aeration did not anticipate the boundary layer inception point position.

RESUMO Entre as medidas de prevenção e mitigação da sedimentação em reservatórios, descarregadores de fundo se apresentam como uma forma de remover sedimentos que se depositam junto ao barramento. Dada a restrita remoção de sedimento gerada pelos descarregadores tradicionais em condições de pressure flushing, este artigo propõe uma nova configuração de descarregador de fundo que visa aumentar o alcance de remoção de sedimentos no sentido paralelo ao eixo da barragem. Foi empregada uma instalação experimental para avaliar seu funcionamento em função da variação de seu diâmetro e de características do escoamento e do sedimento. Através da análise da batimetria gerada pela estrutura, desenvolveu-se uma relação adimensional que estima o alcance de remoção de sedimento, apresentando bom ajuste aos dados experimentais.

ABSTRACT Among several techniques for prevention and mitigation of reservoir sedimentation, bottom outlets arise as a means of removing sediment deposited close to the dam. Given the reduced sediment removal provided by traditional bottom outlets under pressure flushing conditions, this article proposes a new type of structure that aims to increase sediment removal in the direction parallel to the dam axis. An experimental installation was employed to evaluate its operation as a function of the variation of its diameter and flow and sediment characteristics. Through analysis of the bathymetry generated by the structure, a dimensionless relation for predicting the scour pit length was obtained, presenting good fitness to the experimental data.

RESUMO Devido à possibilidade de danos em decorrência do fenômeno da cavitação, o projeto de vertedouros em degraus considera vazões específicas máximas de 15 a 30 m2/s, limite consideravelmente inferior ao praticado em calhas lisas. Aeradores promovem a inserção de ar no escoamento e podem viabilizar o incremento das vazões específicas. Este trabalho analisa as pressões sobre as faces verticais dos degraus e o coeficiente de entrada de ar no escoamento, através de estudo experimental em modelo físico de calha em degraus com ângulo de 53,13o, considerando a instalação de aerador em diferentes posições na calha. Comparando-se os resultados com a aeração natural, conclui-se que a instalação do aerador não altera a magnitude das pressões extremas mínimas na estrutura, mas antecipa o início da aeração no escoamento. Propõe-se nova equação para estimativa do coeficiente de entrada de ar no escoamento, bem como metodologia para previsão de pressões extremas nas faces verticais dos degraus, válidas no intervalo 3,0 ≤ Fr ≤ 6,0.

ABSTRACT The possibility of damage due to the phenomenon of cavitation leads the design of stepped spillways considering maximum specific discharges of 15 to 30 m2/s, a limit considerably lower than that practiced on smooth chutes. Aerators promote the insertion of air in the flow, allowing for the increase of specific flow rates. This work analyzes the pressures on the vertical faces of the steps and the air entrainment coefficient in the flow, through an experimental study in a physical model with a stepped chute angle of 53.13o, considering the installation of aerators in different places of the channel. Comparing the tested conditions with the natural aeration, it is concluded that the installation of the aerator does not change the magnitude of the minimum extreme hydrodynamic pressures, but anticipates the beginning of the flow aeration. A new equation is proposed to estimate the air entrainment coefficient, as well as a methodology for forecasting extreme pressures on the vertical faces of the steps, both valid in the range 3.0 ≤ Fr ≤ 6.0.

RESUMO Métodos simplificados são alternativas úteis para análise prévia dos efeitos da ruptura de barragens, podendo orientar a tomada de decisão da realização de estudos mais completos. Nesse contexto, propõe-se uma nova abordagem simplificada para análise de aspectos da ruptura de barragens de terra, cuja falha ocorre por galgamento, a partir da altura da barragem e do volume do reservatório como dados de entrada. Casos hipotéticos de ruptura foram analisados por meio de simulações hidrodinâmicas, cujos resultados permitiram desenvolver equações capazes de estimar o amortecimento da vazão de pico e o tempo de chegada da vazão máxima no vale a jusante. A abordagem proposta foi aplicada em estudo de caso hipotético (em uma barragem com 15 m de altura e 17 hm3 de volume no reservatório), obtendo-se resultados próximos dos alcançados por meio de outros metodos, especialmente na estimativa da vazão máxima no vale a jusante, onde as diferenças médias entre os resultados dos métodos considerados foram da ordem de 15%.

ABSTRACT Simplified methods are useful alternatives for prior analysis of the effects of dam rupture and can guide the decision-making process for carrying out more complete studies. In this context, a new simplified approach is presented, which enables the analysis of aspects from dam rupture of earthen dams that failed due to overtopping, considering dam height and reservoir volume as input data. Hypothetical cases were analyzed applying dam-break hydrodynamic simulations, which results allowed the development of equations capable of estimating peak flow attenuation and peak discharge arrival time along the downstream valley. The proposed approach was applied in a hypothetical case study (15 m high dam and 17 hm3 reservoir volume), obtaining results close to those achieved through other methods, especially in case of estimating the maximum discharges throughout the downstream valley, where the average differences between the results of the methods were of the order of 15%.

RESUMO Vertedouros em degraus têm por objetivo dissipar, ao longo da calha, uma parcela da energia do escoamento. No entanto, a utilização dessas estruturas está limitada a uma restrita faixa de vazões específicas devido aos riscos de cavitação e erosão. Como a introdução de ar no escoamento permite a proteção do concreto contra os danos mencionados, uma possível solução por aeradores instalados ao longo da calha, já difundida para calhas lisas, está sendo estudada para ser utilizada também em vertedouros em degraus. A presente pesquisa tem o propósito de caracterizar um escoamento sobre vertedouros em degraus com aeração induzida por defletor e fornecimento de ar por uma câmara de ar através de ensaios realizados em um modelo físico reduzido. São apresentadas zonas e posições características do escoamento observadas durante os ensaios e também, quatro equações que permitem calcular, aproximadamente, a sua localização em um protótipo.

ABSTRACT Stepped spillways aim to dissipate part of the upstream energy during the flow passage by the chute. However, the use of these structures is limited to a restrict range of specific discharges due to the risk of cavitation damage. As the air entrainment into the flow assists the concrete protection against the aforementioned damages, a possible solution by aerators installed along the chute, already disseminated to smooth chutes, is being studied to be used also in stepped spillways. The purpose of the present paper is to characterize a flow over a stepped chute with induced aeration by deflector and air supply by an airtight chamber trough tests conducted on a reduced scale physical model. The main regions observed during the tests are presented and were developed four equations that allow to approximately predict the location of the main regions for a given spillway.

RESUMO Apesar da frequência com que ressaltos hidráulicos afogados ocorrem nas estruturas de extravasamento de barragens, são poucos os estudos que abrangem este tipo de fenômeno. Sendo o ressalto hidráulico acompanhado de impactos violentos e variações bruscas de velocidade e pressão, é importante que se conheça a região em que o fenômeno incidirá, a fim possibilitar um dimensionamento seguro e econômico. Neste trabalho, é proposta uma metodologia para a determinação da posição inicial do ressalto afogado ao longo da calha de um vertedouro do tipo Creager. Verificou-se que esta posição é função do número de Froude incidente e do grau de submergência imposto.

ABSTRACT Although sloping hydraulic jumps are frequent in energy dissipators, there are few studies regarding this type of phenomenon. Since the jump is accompanied by violent impacts and sudden variations of velocity and pressure, it is important to know the region where the phenomenon will occur, in order to make a safe and economic design possible. In this paper, a methodology for the determination of the start position of the sloping jump along a Creager spillway is introduced. It was verified that this position is a function of both the incident Froude number and the submergence factor.

RESUMO Pressões extremas no ressalto hidráulico são associadas a riscos de danos no sistema extravasor de barragens por uma série de mecanismos. Assim sendo, o entendimento e a previsão destes esforços são cruciais para o dimensionamento seguro e econômico de sistemas extravasores. Este trabalho visa validar um método existente de previsão de pressões para a estimativa de pressões extremas em ressaltos hidráulicos com baixo número de Froude (abaixo de 4,5). Os resultados indicam que o método pode ser empregado para esta situação de forma preliminar. Recomenda-se que outros estudos sejam feitos para refinar a técnica e para que resultados mais precisos sejam obtidos.

ABSTRACT Extreme pressures in the hydraulic jump are associated with risk of damage to the flow discharge system of dams by a series of mechanisms. Therefore, understanding and predicting these efforts are crucial for the safe and economical design of discharge systems. Thus, this paper aims to validate an existing pressure forecasting methodology for estimating the extreme pressure in the hydraulic jump with low Froude number (below 4.5). Results have shown that the method may be used for this situation on a preliminary basis. Further studies are recommended to refine the technique and to achieve results that are more precise.

Estas variações bruscas de flutuação de pressão podem causar danos nas bacias de dissipação por ressalto hidráulico, tais como: erosão decorrente de cavitação, sobrelevação das lajes de fundo. Portanto o conhecimento do comportamento das flutuações de pressões ao longo do ressalto hidráulico é fundamental para a busca de soluções seguras e econômicas. Este trabalho tem por objetivo identificar e predizer as características das flutuações de pressões junto ao fundo de uma bacia de dissipação, a partir de uma abordagem que considera o ressalto hidráulico como uma composição de efeitos hidráulicos identificados individualmente com distintas condições de escoamento. Para isso, foi realizado o monitoramento e análise das distribuições de pressão em termos médios, suas flutuações e seu valores extremos junto aos contornos sólidos. A abordagem se mostrou eficaz para a compreensão do fenômeno permitindo a estimativa de valores para as diferentes condições de contorno.

ABSTRACT Hydraulic jump is a phenomenon largely used to dissipate energy downstream of hydraulic structures due to their biphasic and macroturbulent characteristics, associated with intense pressure, velocity and level fluctuations. These sudden pressure variations can cause damage to stilling basins, such as: cavitation erosion and superelevation of the floor slabs. Therefore, it is essential to know the behavior of pressure fluctuations along the hydraulic jump to look for safe and economic solutions. This work aims to identify and predict the characteristics of pressure fluctuations, at the bottom of the stilling basin, considering the hydraulic jump as a sum of hydraulic effects individually identified with distinct flow conditions. To do so, the pressure distribution was monitored and analyzed on average terms, and its fluctuations and extreme values along the solid outlines. The approach proved effective for the compression of the phenomena allowing the estimation of values for different outline conditions.

RESUMO Este artigo apresenta um estudo sobre a distribuição de flutuação de pressão a jusante de dissipadores de energia hidráulica tipo concha em 12 diferentes geometrias. Foram avaliados dados resultantes de 78 ensaios, com números de Froude na entrada da estrutura (Ft) variando entre 3,2 e 7,6 e diferentes condições de tirante de água sobre a concha. A partir dos resultados dos ensaios foi possível definir as condições mínimas para garantir que a estrutura funcione de forma submersa (“roller bucket”), bem como, equações para previsão do local onde ocorre a máxima flutuação de pressão, seu valor e a estimativa da flutuação de pressão junto à saída da estrutura.

ABSTRACT This paper presents the distribution of pressure fluctuations measured downstream from 12 different clamshell-type hydraulic energy dissipators. Data were collected resulting in a battery of 78 tests with Froude numbers varying from 3.2 to 7.6 at the device inlets (Ft), under different water level conditions above the clamshell. These tests provided the basis for the analysis of the minimum conditions required to initiate a submerged flow (acting as a roller bucket device), and also to develop equations to predict where the maximum pressure fluctuation occurs, its value and estimates of the pressure fluctuation at the device outlets.
