Abstract Antimicrobial resistance in bacteria isolated from horses represents a threat to global health due to the close relationship of these animals with humans. This study aimed to elucidate the antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of bacteria with pathogenic and zoonotic potential, isolated from the respiratory and genital tracts of horses in Mayabeque, Cuba. Nasal and genital exudates were collected from twenty-three horses, and the isolates obtained were identified using the analytical profile index and mass spectrometry. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of thirteen antibiotics was determined for the isolates. Twenty-three bacterial isolates, including one Streptococcus uberis, sixteen Enterococcus spp., three Staphylococcus sciuri, one Morganella morganii, and two Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, were obtained. S. uberis showed resistance to gentamicin, enrofloxacin, and doxycycline, while enterococci isolates displayed resistance to doxycycline (n=16), rifampicin (n=8), erythromycin (n=7), enrofloxacin (n=3), and chloramphenicol (n=1). All S. sciuri isolates were resistant to at least six antibiotics, including methicillin, with high MIC values for erythromycin (>8192 µg/ml), doxycycline (128 µg/ml), and gentamicin (64 µg/ml). M. morganii isolate was resistant to three antibiotics, with MICs of 128 μg/ml and 256 μg/ml for cefquinome and doxycycline, respectively. S. maltophilia isolates exhibited resistance to cefquinome, with MIC values of 512 μg/ml and 128 μg/ml, respectively. The 91.3% of the isolates were multiresistant to antimicrobials, which represents the first detection in Cuba of bacteria with multiresistance phenotypes, isolated from samples of the nasal and genital mucosa of horses.

Resumen La resistencia a antimicrobianos en bacterias aisladas de caballos representa una amenaza para la salud mundial debido al estrecho vínculo de estos animales con los humanos. El objetivo de este estudio fue describir los perfiles de susceptibilidad a antimicrobianos de bacterias con potencial patogénico y zoonótico, aisladas de los tractos respiratorio y genital de caballos procedentes de Mayabeque, Cuba. Se recopilaron exudados nasales y genitales de veintitrés caballos, y se utilizó el índice de perfil analítico y espectrometría de masas para realizar la identificación de los aislados obtenidos. Se determinó la concentración mínima inhibitoria (CMI) de trece antibióticos, frente a los aislados. Se obtuvieron veintitrés aislados bacterianos (un Streptococcus uberis, dieciséis Enterococcus spp., tres Staphylococcus sciuri, un Morganella morganii y dos Stenotrophomonas maltophilia). S. uberis mostró resistencia a gentamicina, enrofloxacina y doxiciclina. Los aislados de enterococci fueron resistentes a doxiciclina (n=16), rifampicina (n=8), eritromicina (n=7), enrofloxacina (n=3) y cloranfenicol (n=1). Todos los aislados de S. sciuri fueron resistentes al menos a seis antibióticos incluyendo meticilina, con altos valores de CMI para eritromicina (>8192 µg/ml), doxiciclina (128 µg/ml) y gentamicina (64 µg/ml). El aislado de M. morganii fue resistente a tres antibióticos con CMIs de 128 μg/ml y 256 μg/ml para cefquinoma y doxiciclina, respectivamente. Los aislados de S. maltophilia mostraron resistencia a cefquinoma con valores de CMI de 512 y 128 μg/ml respectivamente. El 91,3% de los aislados resultaron multirresistentes a antimicrobianos, lo cual representa la primera detección en Cuba de bacterias con fenotipos de multirresistencia, aisladas de muestras de la mucosa nasal y genital de caballos.

RESUMEN Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus (S. zooepidemicus) es un patógeno oportunista capaz de causar diversas infecciones en los tractos respiratorio, genital y urinario en caballos y otros animales. Esta especie se considera responsable de muchas enfermedades zoonóticas emergentes. Recientemente, existe una creciente circulación de cepas de S. zooepidemicus multirresistentes a antimicrobianos en caballos, sin embargo, no existe información sobre S. zooepidemicus y su perfil de susceptibilidad a antimicrobianos, en caballos cubanos. Por tanto, los objetivos de este estudio fueron reportar el aislamiento de S. zooepidemicus en un caballo y determinar su perfil de susceptibilidad a antimicrobianos. Se muestreó una yegua perteneciente a un productor privado de Melena del Sur, Mayabeque, con mucosas pálidas y se tomó un hisopado del tracto genital. El aislado obtenido se identificó mediante el índice de perfil analítico y espectrometría de masas. Se determinó la concentración mínima inhibitoria (CMI) de 11 antibióticos (penicilina G, ampicilina, amoxicilina-clavulanato, cefquinoma, imipenem, gentamicina, enrofloxacina, doxiciclina, eritromicina, cloranfenicol y vancomicina) para el aislado. El aislado se identificó como S. zooepidemicus y fue sensible a todos los betalactámicos, eritromicina, cloranfenicol y vancomicina. Presentó un perfil de multirresistencia a gentamicina, enrofloxacina y doxiciclina con valores de CMI de 16 μg/mL, 2 μg/mL y 2 μg/mL, respectivamente. Por primera vez en Cuba se detecta S. zooepidemicus multirresistente a antimicrobianos en la mucosa genital de una yegua. La estrecha interacción entre humanos y caballos, aumenta el riesgo de adquirir estos microorganismos multirresistentes o favorecer su diseminación, por lo que este resultado debe ser considerado en la capacitación del personal con vínculo ocupacional.

ABSTRACT Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus (S. zooepidemicus) is an opportunistic pathogen capable of causing various infections in the respiratory, genital, and urinary tracts of horses and other animals. This species is considered responsible for many emerging zoonotic diseases. There has been an increasing circulation of multidrug-resistant S. zooepidemicus strains in horses, however, there is no information on S. zooepidemicus and its antimicrobial susceptibility profile in Cuban horses. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to report the isolation of S. zooepidemicus in a horse and to determine its antimicrobial susceptibility profile. A mare with pale mucous membranes, owned by a private producer in Melena del Sur, Mayabeque, was sampled, and a swab was taken from the genital tract. The isolate obtained was identified using the analytical profile index and mass spectrometry. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 11 antibiotics (penicillin G, ampicillin, amoxicillin-clavulanate, cefquinome, imipenem, gentamicin, enrofloxacin, doxycycline, erythromycin, chloramphenicol, and vancomycin) was determined for the isolate. The isolate was identified as S. zooepidemicus and it was susceptible to all β-lactam, erythromycin, chloramphenicol, and vancomycin. The isolate presented a multidrug resistance profile to gentamicin, enrofloxacin, and doxycycline with MIC values of 16 μg/mL, 2 μg/mL, and 2 μg/mL, respectively. For the first time in Cuba, multidrug-resistant S. zooepidemicus was detected in the genital mucosa of a mare. The close interaction between humans and horses increases the risk of acquiring these multiresistant microorganisms or favoring their dissemination, thus this result should be considered in staff training.

RESUMEN En Colombia la fresa se ha convertido en un cultivo de interés económico debido a la creciente demanda en el mercado extranjero en la última década. La mayoría de plantaciones son a campo abierto y no usan esquemas de polinización para mejorar la calidad de producción. La polinización con abejorros mejora la calidad de los frutos, aunque estos se producen mediante polinización espontánea. La especie nativa Bombus atratus ha sido reconocida como un polinizador eficiente de cultivos hortofrutícolas colombianos bajo invernadero. El presente estudio evaluó la eficiencia de polinización de dos colonias huérfanas en la calidad de los frutos de las variedades camino real y ventana sembrados bajo invernadero en Cajicá-Colombia. Se embolsaron los botones para obtener los frutos producidos espontáneamente y ser comparados con los frutos provenientes de la visita de obreras de B. atratus. Se encontró que la visita de las obreras mejoró la calidad de los frutos en las variables, calibre (35 % y 31 %), longitud (28 % y 19 %), peso fresco (103 % y 90 %), peso seco (126 % y 145 %) y número de semillas (55 % y 81 %) para las variedades Camino Real y Ventana respectivamente. A partir de las observaciones realizadas, se determinó que el recurso floral utilizado por las obreras de B. atratus fue el néctar y se hacen recomendaciones sobre su uso en este cultivo.

ABSTRACT In Colombia the strawberry has become a crop of economic interest due to the growing demand in the foreign market in the last decade. Most plantations are open fields and do not use pollination strategies to improve the production quality. Pollination with bumblebees improves the quality of the fruits, although these are produced by spontaneous pollination. The native species Bombus atratus has been recognized as an efficient pollinator of Colombian horticultural crops under greenhouse. The present study evaluated the pollination efficiency of two orphan colonies in the quality of the fruits of the "Camino real" and "Ventana" cultivars planted under a greenhouse in Cajicá-Colombia. The buttons were excluded to obtain the fruits produced spontaneously and to be compared with the fruits coming from the visit of workers of B. atratus. It was found that the visit of the workers improved fruit quality in the features: caliber (35 % and 31 %), length (28 % and 19 %), fresh weight (103 % and 90 %), dry weight 126 % and 145 %) and number of seeds (55 % and 81 %) for the cultivar "Camino Real" and "Ventana" respectively. From the observations made, it was determined that the floral resource used by the workers of B. atratus was the nectar and recommendations are done about on its use in this crop.

M. hyorhinis is considered one of the etiological agents of arthritis in sucking pigs, but recently as seen, some strains can produce pneumonia that could not be distinguished from the mycoplasmosis caused by M. hyopneumoniae. The study was conducted to research the presence of Mycoplasma hyorhinis (M. hyorhinis ) in different regions of the country from exudates of pig lungs with typical EP lesions. Exudates from 280 pig lungs with typical EP lesions were studied using molecular techniques such as PCR, real time PCR and amplification of the 16S-23S rRNA. It was detected that the 66% of the samples studied resulted positive to M. hyorhinis, and the presence of this species was detected in all the provinces. Amplification and studies on the intergenic region 16S-23S of M. hyorhinis rRNA demonstrated the existing variability among strains of a same species. This study is the first report on M. hyorhinis detection in Cuba.
