Resumo Introdução: A doença renal crônica (DRC) e a síndrome metabólica (SM) são reconhecidas como problemas de saúde pública relacionados ao excesso de peso e a fatores cardiometabólicos. O objetivo deste estudo foi desenvolver um modelo para prever a SM em pessoas com DRC. Métodos: Este foi um estudo transversal prospectivo de pacientes de um centro de referência em São Luís, MA, Brasil. A amostra incluiu voluntários adultos classificados de acordo com a presença de DRC leve ou grave. Para o rastreamento da SM, o algoritmo de classificação k-nearest neighbors (KNN) foi utilizado com os seguintes dados: sexo, tabagismo, circunferência do pescoço e relação cintura-quadril. Os resultados foram considerados significativos com p < 0,05. Resultados: Foram avaliados 196 pacientes adultos com média de idade de 44,73 anos, 71,9% do sexo feminino, 69,4% com sobrepeso e 12,24% com DRC. Desses últimos, 45,8% apresentaram SM, a maioria tinha até 3 componentes metabólicos alterados, e o grupo com DRC apresentou significância estatística em: circunferência da cintura, pressão arterial sistólica, pressão arterial diastólica e glicemia de jejum. O algoritmo KNN comprovou ser um bom preditor para a triagem de SM com acurácia e sensibilidade de 79% e especificidade de 80% (área sob a curva ROC – AUC = 0,79). Conclusão: O algoritmo KNN pode ser usado como um método de triagem de baixo custo para avaliar a presença de SM em pessoas com DRC. Abstract Introduction: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and metabolic syndrome (MS) are recognized as public health problems which are related to overweight and cardiometabolic factors. The aim of this study was to develop a model to predict MS in people with CKD. Methods: This was a prospective cross-sectional study of patients from a reference center in São Luís, MA, Brazil. The sample included adult volunteers classified according to the presence of mild or severe CKD. For MS tracking, the k-nearest neighbors (KNN) classifier algorithm was used with the following inputs: gender, smoking, neck circumference, and waist-to-hip ratio. Results were considered significant at p < 0.05. Results: A total of 196 adult patients were evaluated with a mean age of 44.73 years, 71.9% female, 69.4% overweight, and 12.24% with CKD. Of the latter, 45.8% had MS, the majority had up to 3 altered metabolic components, and the group with CKD showed statistical significance in: waist circumference, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and fasting blood glucose. The KNN algorithm proved to be a good predictor for MS screening with 79% accuracy and sensitivity and 80% specificity (area under the ROC curve – AUC = 0.79). Conclusion: The KNN algorithm can be used as a low-cost screening method to evaluate the presence of MS in people with CKD. ABSTRACT Background: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) for hepatitis C treatment by measuring sustained virologic response (SVR) and serious adverse events to help design effective interventions for reducing disease prevalence. Methods: This was a retrospective, observational, real-life study of patients with chronic hepatitis C receiving DAA treatment in the state of Ceará, Brazil. Data were collected in REDCap and analyzed using R® software by the Student's t, chi-square, and Fisher’s exact tests, with a significance level of 5%. Results: In this study, 1075 patients who were diagnosed with hepatitis C infection between October 2015 and October 2023 were included. The mean age of the participants was 56.6 ± 11 years and 60.2% were men. The sample included 51 HIV-infected patients (6.6%), 166 (15,4%) liver transplant recipients, 34 (3,1%) kidney transplant recipients, and 446 patients with cirrhosis (41.4%). The overall SVR rate was 96.4%. The sofosbuvir/daclatasvir/ribavirin regimen used in 354 (32.9%) patients achieved an SVR of 96%. The cure rate was 96.5%, with a lower SVR in patients with cirrhosis (93.4%) than in those with less severe fibrosis (97.9%) (p=0.0015). Serious adverse events associated with ribavirin use occurred in 3.5% of patients. Conclusions: DAA treatment for hepatitis C achieved SVR in real life in all patient profiles, including transplant recipients, HIV carriers, and patients with cirrhosis. Although these drugs are safe, a few decompensated patients with cirrhosis died during treatment. Abstract Background: Almost all Tityus characterized toxins are from subgenera Atreus and Tityus, there are only a few data about toxins produced by Archaeotityus, an ancient group in Tityus genus. Methods: Tityus (Archaeotityus) mattogrossensis crude venom was fractionated by high performance liquid chromatography, the major fractions were tested in a frog sciatic nerve single sucrose-gap technique. Two fractions (Tm1 and Tm2) were isolated, partially sequenced by MALDI-TOF/MS and electrophysiological assayed on HEK293 Nav 1.3, HEK293 Nav 1.6, DUM and DRG cells. Results: The sucrose-gap technique showed neurotoxicity in four fractions. One fraction caused a delay of action potential repolarization and other three caused a reduction in amplitude. An electrophysiological assay showed that Tm1 is active on HEK293 Nav 1.3, HEK293 Nav 1.6, DUM and DRG cells, and Tm2 on HEK293 Nav 1.3 and DRG cells, but not in HEK293 Nav 1.6. In addition, Tm1 and Tm2 did promote a shift to more negative potentials strongly suggesting that both are α-NaScTx. Conclusion: Although Tityus (Archaeotityus) mattogrossensis is considered an ancient group in Tityus genus, the primary structure of Tm1 and Tm2 is more related to Tityus subgenus. The patch clamp electrophysiological tests suggest that Tm1 and Tm2 are NaScTx, and also promoted no shift to more negative potentials, strongly suggesting that both are α-NaScTx. This paper aimed to explore and characterize for the first time toxins from the ancient scorpion Tityus (Archaeotityus) mattogrossensis.

A nitretação por plasma consiste num tratamento efetivo para o aumento das durezas superficiais dos aços inoxidáveis, podendo ser realizada em temperaturas inferiores às usadas nos processos convencionais, evitando-se assim, a formação de nitretos de cromo, que prejudicariam a resistência à corrosão do material. Os aços inoxidáveis endurecíveis por precipitação foram desenvolvidos após a Segunda Guerra Mundial em decorrência das necessidades da indústria aeroespacial, que necessitava de materiais resistentes à corrosão em temperaturas mais elevadas. Nesse trabalho, foi produzido um aço inoxidável endurecível por precipitação com uso de Nb e um aço comercial PH 13-8Mo endurecível por precipitados à base de Cu, para fins de comparação em termos de produção de camadas nitretadas e de resistências ao desgaste abrasivo. O Nb mostrou-se um eficiente formador de precipitados endurecedores do aço, com o pico de dureza ocorrendo em poucos minutos de tratamento. Nos dois aços, obtiveram-se camadas nitretadas com boa uniformidade. A resistência ao desgaste do aço com Nb nitretado foi muito superior à do aço PH 13-8Mo também nitretado.

Plasma nitriding is an effective treatment to increase the surface hardness of stainless steel and may be performed in temperatures below those used in conventional nitriding procedures, thereby avoiding the formation of chromium nitrides that would deteriorate the corrosion resistance of the material. The precipitation hardened stainless steels were developed after the Second World War as a result of the needs of the aerospace industry, which needed materials resistant to corrosion at higher temperatures. In this research, a precipitation hardening Nb stainless steel and a PH 13-8Mo precipitation hardened stainless steels with Cu were produced, for purposes of comparison in terms of the production of nitrided layers and abrasive wear resistances. Nb proved to be an effective hardening precipitate former, with the hardness peak occurring within minutes of treatment. In both steels, nitrided layers with good uniformity were obtained. The wear resistance of the nitrided Nb steel was much higher than that presented by the PH 13-8Mo nitrided steel.

Com objetivo de avaliar o efeito do lodo de esgoto na formação e qualidades de tapetes de grama, foi instalado, em Itapetininga, São Paulo (SP), o experimento utilizando grama Zoysia japonica Steud., conhecida como esmeralda. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos ao acaso em parcelas subdivididas, com quatro repetições, sendo as parcelas principais constituídas de cinco doses de lodo (0, 10, 20, 30 e 40Mg ha-1, base seca), mais um tratamento com NPK, de acordo com as necessidades da cultura e as subparcelas com dois sistemas de manejo (com e sem o uso de escarificador utilizado para romper uma camada superficial compactada). Utilizou-se o lodo da Estação de Tratamento de Esgoto de Jundiaí, SP. As doses de lodo aplicadas correspondem às doses de 100, 200, 300 e 400kg ha-1 de nitrogênio. Após 165 dias da aplicação do lodo de esgoto, a dose de 31Mg ha-1 permitiu o fechamento completo (100% da taxa de cobertura do solo) e a maior resistência dos tapetes de grama. O mesmo resultado foi encontrado quando utilizou-se a adubação química. A testemunha e as parcelas que receberam 10Mg ha-1 de lodo não formaram tapete. O lodo de esgoto aplicado em superfície promoveu redução da massa dos tapetes de grama esmeralda. O uso do escarificador reduziu a resistência dos tapetes de grama esmeralda. Os valores de metais pesados encontrados no lodo de esgoto estavam abaixo do limite estabelecido pelas normas que regulamenta a utilização do lodo de esgoto na agricultura.

Aiming to evaluate sewage sludge effect in the grass sod qualitiy and formation it was installed in Itapetininha - SP one experiment using Zoysia japonica Steud. The experimental design adopted was randomized blocks with split plot design, with four replications, the main plots consisting of five doses of sludge (0, 10, 20, 30 and 40Mg ha-1, a dry basis), another treatment with NPK, according to the requirement of the culture, and subplots with two management systems (with and without chisel use, to break a compacted surface layer). The sludge used came from "Estação de Tratamento de Esgoto de Jundiaí/SP". The doses of sludge applied correspond to the doses of 100, 200, 300 and 400kg ha-1 of nitrogen. 165 days after sewage sludge application, the dose of 31Mg ha-1 allowed the complete closing (100% of soil cover rate) and greater resistance of the zoysiagrass sod. The same results were found when chemical fertilization was used. The control and the plots that received 10Mg ha-1 of sludge did not formed sod. The sewage sludge applied to surface promoted reduction of zoysiagrass sod mass. The use of surface chisel reduced the strength of zoysiagrass sod. The heavy metals values found in sewage sludge were below the limit set by the rules governing the sewage sludge use in agriculture.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a viabilidade de um isolado de Tritrichomonas foetus criopreservada com glicerol e dimetilsulfóxido (DMSO) a -196ºC. Isolados do protozoário foram descongeladas dois dias após o congelamento e 6, 12, 18 e 26 meses, para avaliação de sua viabilidade. Em todos os tempos analisados, o congelamento foi viável em 60% e 90% das amostras congeladas com glicerol a 10% e DMSO a 12%, respectivamente.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the viabilitity of Tritrichomonas foetus cryopreservated with glycerol and dimethilsulphosyde (DMSO) at -196ºC. Samples of the protozoa were thaw two days and 6, 12, 18, and 26 months after freezing to be evaluated. In the time analyzed, the freezing was viable in 60% and 90% of freeze samples with glycerol at 10% and DMSO at 12%, respectively.
