ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others. publications problem uptodate up date classifications context exception (CTFB http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/, httpfaunajbrjgovbr http //fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ , jbrj gov br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/) 2015 Brazil 80 specialists 1 2024 133691 133 691 133,69 125138 125 138 125,13 82.3%, 823 82 3 (82.3% 102000 102 000 102,00 7.69%, 769 7 69 (7.69% 11000 11 11,00 . 3,567 3567 567 (3,56 2,292 2292 2 292 (2,29 1,833 1833 833 (1,83 1,447 1447 447 (1,44 1000 1,00 831 (83 628 (62 606 (60 520 (52 50 users science health biology law anthropology education others http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ faunajbrjgovbr //fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ 201 8 202 13369 13 133,6 12513 12 125,1 82.3% (82.3 10200 10 00 102,0 7.69% 76 6 (7.69 1100 11,0 3,56 356 56 (3,5 2,29 229 29 (2,2 1,83 183 83 (1,8 1,44 144 44 (1,4 100 1,0 (8 62 (6 60 52 (5 5 http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br 20 1336 133, 1251 125, 82.3 (82. 1020 0 102, 7.69 (7.6 110 11, 3,5 35 (3, 2,2 22 (2, 1,8 18 (1, 1,4 14 4 ( 82. Abstract Background: Argenteohyla siemersi (red-spotted Argentina frog) is a casque-headed tree frog species belonging to the Hylidae family. This species has a complex combination of anti-predator defense mechanisms that include a highly lethal skin secretion. However, biochemical composition and biological effects of this secretion have not yet been studied. Methods: The A. siemersi skin secretion samples were analyzed by mass spectrometry and chromatographic analysis (MALDI-TOF/MS, RP-HPLC and GC-MS). Proteins were also studied by SDS-PAGE. Among the biological activities evaluated, several enzymatic activities (hemolytic, phospholipase A2, clotting, proteolytic and amidolytic) were assessed. Furthermore, the cytotoxic activity (cytolysis and fluorescence staining) was evaluated on myoblasts of the C2C12 cell line. Results: The MALDI-TOF/MS analysis identified polypeptides and proteins in the aqueous solution of A. siemersi skin secretion. SDS-PAGE revealed the presence of proteins with molecular masses from 15 to 55 kDa. Steroids, but no alkaloids or peptides (less than 5 KDa), were detected using mass spectrometry. Skin secretion revealed the presence of lipids in methanolic extract, as analyzed by CG-MS. This secretion showed hemolytic and phospholipase A2 activities, but was devoid of amidolytic, proteolytic or clotting activities. Moreover, dose-dependent cytotoxicity in cultured C2C12 myoblasts of the skin secretion was demonstrated. Morphological analysis, quantification of lactate dehydrogenase release and fluorescence staining indicated that the cell death triggered by this secretion involved necrosis. Conclusions: Results presented herein evidence the biochemical composition and biological effects of A. siemersi skin secretion and contribute to the knowledge on the defense mechanisms of casque-headed frogs.

The new triterpene friedelan-1,3,21-trione, the known compounds friedelan-3-one, 3β-friedelinol, 3,4-seco-friedelan-3-oic acid, 28-hydroxyfriedelan-3-one, friedelan-3-oxo-28-al, friedelan-3,21-dione, 30-hydroxyfriedelan-3-one, a mixture of 30-hydroxyfriedelan-3-one/21α-hydroxyfriedelan-3-one, 21β-hydroxyfriedelan-3-one, gutta-percha, squalene, and a mixture of palmitic/stearic/oleic acids were isolated from the hexane extracts of leaves and branches of T. micrantha. Their chemical structures were established by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), gas chromatography (GC), 1D/2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and comparison with the literature data. All compounds were described for T. micrantha and the genus Tontelea for the first time. The branch and leaf extracts displayed anti-Zika virus activity at the lowest tested concentration of 15.6 µg mL-1, mainly virucidal effect, and presented no cytotoxicity to Vero cells. Furthermore, the ethyl acetate and methanolic leaf extracts demonstrated the best activities at the concentration of 31.2 and 15.6 µg mL-1 at the viral adsorption and penetration stages, respectively. These results showed that these extracts may be promising candidates for the Zika virus treatment.

Two new alkaloids containing Nb-methyl-triptamine units linked to bis-quinoline moieties, N-8”-formyl-calycosidine and N-8”-methyl-N-1’-demethyl-iso-calycosidine, were isolated from the aerial part of Margaritopsis carrascoana, along with known calycosidine and hodgkinsine. The cytotoxicity of the isolated alkaloids has been evaluated against cancer cell lines. The first two compounds showed only weak activity against HL-60 cell line, while hodgkinsine was the most active compound against HCT-116, OVCAR-8, HL-60 and SF-295 cancer cell lines. The structures of the isolated compounds were established by spectroscopic and molecular mechanical methods.

The aim of this work was to analyze the size and spatial structures and demography of Actinostemon concolor (Spreng.) Müll. Arg. (Euphorbiaceae) in the flooded areas of Mata dos Godoy State Park. Fifty plots of 100 m² were established and three surveys were conducted. All the individuals were measured, mapped and divided into categories as seedlings, juveniles and adults. The coefficient of skewness, L-function of Ripley, and the matrix population models were used in the study. The population showed positive coefficient of skewness and the individuals were distributed in groups. The population growth rates (λ) were equal or lower than 1.0 and the adult survival and recruitment of juvenile to adult were the vital rates that most affected the values of λ. Considering these results and the unpredictability of the environment, it could be concluded that the individual numbers of A. concolor would fluctuate over time, but the species would remain as one of the most important in the Park.

In order to uncover the morpho-anatomical responses of tree species to hypoxia, we studied the effects of flooding on vegetative organs of Aegiphila sellowiana. Young individuals were kept in drained and flooded soil for 50 and 80 days. Under flooding, there was a mortality rate of 40%. The surviving plants produced peridermic fissures, superficial roots and hypertrophied lenticels. Secondary roots of flooded plants presented greater diameter, thicker cortex, greater diameter of the cortical cells, larger intercellular spaces, and thinner vessel elements and vascular tissues. In the main roots under secondary growth and hypocotyls, cork and phelloderm became thicker under flooding. Leaves of flooded plants presented thicker midrib, larger mesophyll, higher number of trichomes and smaller stomata. Considering that part of the plants subject to flooding have died, it is possible to suggest that A. sellowiana is intolerant of soil inundation. However, the surviving plants showed morpho-anatomical modifications that could have conferred some tolerance to them. Thus, the differential tolerance observed among individuals of A. sellowiana indicates a variability of genotypes in the samples used in this study.

Arg., Astronium graveolens Jacq. e Gallesia integrifolia (Spreng) Harms, (emergentes); Alseis floribunda Schott, Ruprechtia laxiflora Meisn. e Bougainvillea spectabilis Willd. (dossel, intolerantes à sombra); Machaerium paraguariense Hassl, Myroxylum peruiferum L. e Chrysophyllum gonocarpum (Mart. & Eichler exMiq.) Engl. (dossel, tolerantes à sombra); Sorocea bonplandii (Baill.) Bürger, Trichilia casaretti C. Dc, Trichilia catigua A. Juss. e Actinostemon concolor (Spreng.) Müll. Arg. (subosque).
Size structure and spatial arrangement of 13 abundant tree species were determined in a riparian forest fragment inParaná State, South Brazil (23"16'S and 51"01'W). The studied species were Aspidosperma polyneuron Müll. Arg., Astronium graveolens Jacq. and Gallesia integrifolia (Spreng) Harms (emergent species); Alseis floribunda Schott, Ruprechtia laxiflora Meisn. and Bougainvillea spectabilis Willd. (shade-intolerant canopy species); Machaerium paraguariense Hassl, Myroxylum peruiferum L. and Chrysophyllum gonocarpum (Mart. & Eichler ex Miq.) Engl. (shade-tolerant canopy species); Sorocea bonplandii (Baill.) Bürger, Trichilia casaretti C. Dc, Trichilia catigua A. Juss. and Actinostemon concolor (Spreng.) Müll. Arg. (understory small trees species). Height and diameter structures and basal area of species were analyzed. Spatial patterns and slope correlation were analyzed by Moran's / spatial autocorrelation coefficient and partial Mantel test, respectively. The emergent and small understory species showed the highest and the lowest variations in height, diameter and basal area. Size distribution differed among emergent species and also among canopy shade-intolerant species. The spatial pattern ranged among species in all groups, except in understory small tree species. The slope was correlated with spatial pattern for A. polyneuron, A. graveolens, A. floribunda, R. laxiflora, M. peruiferum and T. casaretti. The results indicated that most species occurredin specific places, suggesting that niche differentiation can be an important factor in structuring the tree community.

OBJECTIVE: To compare hypertension frequency in women, 3 to 12 years after the index-pregnancy, when they were classified into 4 groups: NGT: normal glucose tolerance; GHG: gestational hyperglycemia; GDM: gestacional diabetes mellitus; GDM plus GHG. METHODS: From 3,113 pregnant women, 535 were participants and selected by a process that was randomized and proportional to the group number. NGT women were different from the others in most of the clinical parameters. All women had their blood pressure evaluated. Statistical analyses were performed by Goodman's and chi-square tests. RESULTS: Hypertension frequency was higher in GDM plus GHG women than in NGT women (40.9 vs. 23.6%; P<0.05). It was similar in GHG and GDM women and not different from NGT and GDM plus GHG women (28.3 and 31.2%, respectively). To have been in GDM plus GHG group increases the risk of hypertension twice. CONCLUSION: Women with previous GDM plus GHG have higher risk of hypertension, in addition to that of type 2 diabetes.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the clinical/radiological features of patients with primary vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) admitted to a single institution from 1969 to 1999. METHODS: At admission, after the institution of chemoprophylaxis, patients were investigated by CUM, DMSA, and US. The children were managed with periodical clinical and laboratory evaluations. Analyses were performed with the data obtained at admission. RESULTS: A total of 483 patients were enrolled in the protocol. There was a predominance of females (70%) and caucasian race (70%). Mean age at VUR diagnosis was 26 months and 92.5% of the patients had urinary infection before admission. A total of 710 refluxing units were analyzed. The distribution of reflux grade was: grade I (49; 7%); II (254; 36%); III (190; 26%); IV (161; 23%) e V (56; 8%). Approximately one half of the units analyzed were from patients presenting renal damage at admission. The distribution of the severity of renal damage was as follows: mild (36%), moderate (34%), and severe (30%). There was a significant risk of severe renal damage for the males (OR = 1.74, 95% CI = 1.2 - 2.5, p = 0.002). CONCLUSION: There was a predominance of VUR among females and most presented a mild or moderate degree. However, there was a high percentage of renal damage at admission and a tendency to greater morbidity for the males.

A phytosociological study was developed in flooded area of the Mata dos Godoy State Park, municipality of Londrina, southern Brazil (23º27'S and 51°15'W) in order to determine the diversity and the structure of tree species. Fifty 10m×10m plots (0,5ha) were used to sample trees with GBH (girth at breast height) > 15,0cm. Density, frequency and dominance parameters were calculated for each species. In this area 912 living and 58 dead individuals were sampled. The living individuals were distributed in 26 families, 49 genera and 64 species. The value of the Shannon's diversity index was 3,44. The families with the highest species number were Leguminosae and Myrtaceae, while Nectandra megapotamica (Spreng.) Mez, Chrysophyllum gonocarpum (Mart. & Eichler), Actinostemon concolor (Spreng.) Müll. Arg., Ruprechtia laxiflora Meisn. and Trichilia catigua A. Juss. were the most important species in this area. The less diversity and structure of this area is related to flooding and the species adapted to this environment are recruited in higher abundance.
