Resumo: Objetivo O objetivo do trabalho foi relacionar a metacomunidade fitoplanctônica com seus possíveis determinantes em uma microbacia hidrográfica: (I) determinantes relacionados à filtragem em escala de paisagem, (II) determinantes referentes à filtragem local de micro-habitat, (III) determinantes referentes a colonização anterior e (IV) determinantes representando três diferentes rotas de dispersão. Métodos Foram selecionadas oito estações de amostragem ao longo da microbacia do Rio Cascavel, localizada no estado do Paraná, Brasil. As coletas foram realizadas trimestralmente durante três anos. Todas as amostras de fitoplâncton passaram por análise quantitativa para averiguar a densidade da metacomunidade. Além disso fizemos a caracterização da paisagem tanto o uso e ocupação do solo e caracterização ambiental quanto as variáveis físicas e químicas da água. Todos os dados passaram por análises estatísticas pertinentes, onde a partição da variância foi realizada utilizando modelos RDA parciais, com seleção prévia das variáveis preditoras, para estimar o papel relativo de cada preditor na comunidade. Ainda comparamos três possíveis rotas de dispersão: Mapa de Autovetores Assimétricos” (AEM), “Terrestre” e “Curso d´água”. Resultados Constatou-se que a metacomunidade foi mais bem explicada pelo “mapa de autovetores assimétricos” (AEM), indicando que por se tratar de uma pequena escala espacial a alta conectividade entre as estações de amostragem possibilita que as espécies se dispersem também por terra. Os diferentes filtros atuam em conjunto e dependem da variação de chuva. Além de flutuar temporalmente, a influência desses mecanismos está sujeita a qual hipótese de dispersão está sendo considerada. Conclusões Na escala da microbacia hidrográfica, argumentamos que os processos de pequena escala devem ser considerados, uma vez que homogeneízam a paisagem e, consequentemente, deixam o gradiente ambiental semelhante entre as estações de amostragem. Além disso, a conectividade das manchas de colonização é essencial para entender o comportamento das microalgas que têm alta capacidade de dispersão, não se restringindo apenas ao curso do rio. Abstract: Aim Our goal was to relate the phytoplankton metacommunity to its possible determinants in a micro watershed: (I) determinants related to landscape-scale filtering, (II) determinants referring to local microhabitat filtering, (III) determinants referring to previous colonization, and (IV) determinants representing three different dispersal routes. Methods Eight sampling stations were selected along the Cascavel River watershed, located in the state of Paraná, Brazil. Samples were collected quarterly for three years. All phytoplankton samples were quantitatively analyzed to determine the density of the metacommunity. In addition, it was characterized the landscape in terms of land use and occupation, and environmental characterization in terms of physical and chemical variables of the water. All data underwent relevant statistical analysis, where variance partitioning was carried out using partial RDA models, with prior selection of predictor variables, to estimate the relative role of each predictor in the community. We also compared three possible dispersal routes: “Asymmetric Eigenvector Map” (AEM), “Overland” and “Watercourse”. Results It was found that the metacommunity was best explained by “asymmetric eigenvector mapping” (AEM), indicating that because it is a small spatial scale the high connectivity between the sampling stations enables species to disperse overland as well. The different filters act together and depend on rainfall variation. Besides fluctuating temporally, the influence of these mechanisms is subject to which dispersal hypothesis is being considered. Conclusions At the watershed scale, we argue that small-scale processes should be considered, since they homogenize the landscape and consequently leave the environmental gradient similar between sampling stations. In addition, the connectivity of colonization patches is essential to understand the behavior of microalgae that have a high dispersal capacity and are not restricted only to the river course. This study had the objective of accomplishing the taxonomic survey of rivers from the area of influence of Baixo Iguaçu’s hydroelectric power plant. The monthly samples were collected from january of 2019 to december of 2019 allowing the identification of 55 taxons, distributed in eight families Hydrodictyaceae, Scenedesmaceae, Selenastraceae, Sphaeropleaceae, Volvocaceae, Chlorellaceae, Oocystaceae and Trebouxiophyceae incertae sedis. Resumo Ambientes lóticos são ecossistemas muito vulneráveis aos impactos das atividades humanas, especialmente em regiões urbanas, e uma das formas para auxiliar no diagnóstico ambiental é utilizando o conhecimento da composição dos organismos bioindicadores, dentre eles as microalgas. O objetivo foi caracterizar qualitativamente as microalgas enquadradas na Classe Chlorophyceae Wille, fornecendo descrições e dados merísticos dos espécimes bem como as condições ambientais em que os táxons foram registrados. Foram realizadas amostragens de água e de fitoplâncton trimestralmente no ano de 2020, em nove rios de abastecimento, distribuídos em três bacias hidrográficas da região oeste do Paraná (bacia do Paraná III, bacia do Piquiri e bacia do Baixo Iguaçu). Os rios estudados foram enquadrados como oligotróficos ou mesotróficos e os táxons apresentaram em sua maioria ocorrência rara. Foram registrados 36 táxons pertencentes a classe Chlorophyceae distribuídos em cinco famílias: Hydrodictyaceae Dumortier, Neochloridaceae Ettl & Komárek, Radiococcaceae Fott ex P.C.Silva, Scenedesmaceae Oltmanns, Selenastraceae Blackman & Tansley. Esses táxons possuem representantes principalmente cenobiais, apresentando cerca de 70% dos indivíduos nessa configuração de talo, seguido por 22% de colônias e 8% de talos unicelulares. Entre as espécies identificadas, cinco ocorreram somente em locais mesotróficos, advertindo para ambientes com tendências a elevar sua trofia, visto que são gêneros já associados anteriormente a essas condições. Abstract Lotic environments are subjected to the impacts of human activities in an intense way in urban regions and one of the ways to assist in the environmental diagnosis is through the knowledge of the composition of bioindicator organisms, including microalgae. The objective of this work was to qualitatively characterize the Chlorophyceae Class Wille, providing descriptions and meristic data of the specimens as well as the environmental conditions in which the taxa were recorded. Water and phytoplankton samplings were carried out quarterly in 2020, in nine supply rivers, distributed in three river basins in the western region of Paraná (Paraná III basin, Piquiri basin and Baixo Iguaçu basin). The studied rivers were classified as oligotrophic or mesotrophic and the taxa were mostly rare. Thirty-six taxa belonging to the Chlorophyceae class were recorded, distributed in five families: Hydrodictyaceae Dumortier, Neochloridaceae Ettl & Komárek, Radiococcaceae Fott ex P.C.Silva, Scenedesmaceae Oltmanns, Selenastraceae Blackman & Tansley. These taxa have mainly cenobial representatives, with about 70% of the individuals in this thallus configuration, followed by 22% colonies and 8% unicellular thallus. Among the identified species, five occurred only in mesotrophic sites, warning for environments with tendencies to elevate their trophic, since they are genera previously associated with these conditions. Resumo Objetivo A urbanização, a agricultura e o desmatamento são os principais fatores antropogênicos que modificam o solo, alterando a qualidade da água e influenciado os fatores limnológicos e a biota aquática em rios. Nós investigamos a resposta taxonômica e funcional baseada na morfologia (GFBM) da comunidade fitoplanctônica entre diferentes rios de abastecimento público em distintas bacias hidrográficas com características ultraoligotróficas, oligotróficos e mesotróficas. Métodos Amostramos a comunidade fitoplanctônica e as variáveis ambientais em nove rios ao longo de três bacias hidrográficas da região oeste do Paraná. Para avaliar a relação taxonômica e funcional da comunidade com as variáveis ambientais nós aplicamos análises de variância e análises de redundância. Resultados A maior contribuição taxonômica para a riqueza e biovolume foram de algas verdes e diatomáceas, enquanto as maiores contribuições funcionais foram dos GFBM IV (algas sem traços especializados), GFBM V (algas unicelulares flageladas), GFBM VI (algas com exoesqueleto silicoso) e GFBM (grandes algas coloniais). Apenas a abordagem taxonômica foi sensível a variabilidade ambiental dos rios, enquanto que para a abordagem funcional não foi identificada nenhuma relação com a variabilidade ambiental. Conclusões A abordagem taxonômica da comunidade fitoplanctônica foi mais sensível a variabilidade ambiental dos rios estudados do que a abordagem funcional baseada na morfologia. Portanto, nós reforçamos a importância dos indicadores biológicos para compreensão das dinâmicas em ecossistemas aquáticos, fornecendo informações cruciais para a gestão dos recursos hídricos utilizados para abastecimento público.

Abstract Aim Urbanization, agriculture, and deforestation are the main anthropogenic factors that modify the soil, altering the quality of water, and influencing limnological aspects and the aquatic biota in rivers. We investigated the morphology-based taxonomic and functional response (MBFG) of the phytoplankton community among different public supply rivers in distinct hydrographic basins with ultraoligotrophic, oligotrophic, and mesotrophic characteristics. Methods We sampled the phytoplankton community and environmental variables in nine rivers along three hydrographic basins in western Paraná. In order to evaluate the taxonomic and functional relationship of the community with the environmental variables, we applied both variance and redundancy analyses. Results Differences in temperature, pH, turbidity, total phosphorus, chemical oxygen demand, and total dissolved solids were identified among river basins and/or trophic states. The highest taxonomic contributions to richness and biovolume were from green algae and diatoms, while the highest functional contributions were from MBFG IV (algae without specialized traits), MBFG V (unicellular flagellated algae), MBFG VI (algae with a siliceous exoskeleton) and MBFG (large colonial algae). The taxonomic approach was sensitive to environmental variability in the rivers, while for the functional approach no relationship to environmental variability was identified. Conclusions The taxonomic approach of the phytoplankton community was more sensitive to the environmental variability of the studied rivers than the functional approach based on morphology. Therefore, we reinforce the importance of biological indicators for understanding the dynamics in aquatic ecosystems, providing crucial information for the management of water resources used for public supply.

The studies related to the concentration and bioavailability of soil micronutrients are very limited for the central region of Santa Fe province, reason for which the objectives of the current research were: a) to determine the decrease of the micronutrient contents in Argiudolls of Santa Fe as a consequence of soil use, and b) to correlate the micronutrient bioavailability with soil properties that were affected by the intensification of productive systems (organic matter, pH). The study was carried out in Argiudolls of Las Colonias county (Santa Fe). Composite soil samples were collected from 20 fields under pristine conditions (CP), 22 fields under milk production history (G), 24 fields under agricultural-livestock history (AG) and 20 fields under a long agricultural history (A). These samples were used to determine: pH, organic carbon (OC), boron (B), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn) and zinc (Zn). The results indicate that the pH did not vary among the studied situations; the values of OC diminished 40% with the intensification of agriculture; the concentration of B and Zn in fields with a long agricultural history decreased 50% with respect to the pristine condition; the Cu concentration was not altered; Fe and Mn did not show a clear tendency to change as a function of the soil use. Zinc deficiencies could occur in some cases, therefore, its concentration should be routinely controlled, especially in intensive systems, to assure an appropriate supply of nutrients according to the crop demand.

Las investigaciones realizadas en la zona Central de la provincia de Santa Fe en relación con la concentración y biodisponibilidad de micronutrientes en los suelos son muy limitadas, por lo que los objetivos del presente trabajo fueron: a) determinar si se produjo una disminución en los contenidos de micronutrientes en Argiudoles del centro de la provincia de Santa Fe como consecuencia del uso a que fueron destinados y b) correlacionar la biodisponibilidad con propiedades del suelo que se conoce que fueron afectadas por la intensificación de los sistemas productivos (MO, pH). Se trabajó en el departamento Las Colonias (Santa Fe), en suelos Argiudoles. Se colectaron muestras compuestas de 20 lotes en condiciones prístinas (CP), 22 lotes con uso ganadero dedicados a la producción láctea (G), 24 lotes con historia agrícola-ganadera (AG) y 20 lotes con prolongada historia agrícola (A), que se utilizaron para determinar: pH, carbono orgánico oxidable (CO), boro (B), cobre (Cu), hierro (Fe), manganeso (Mn) y cinc (Zn). Los resultados indican que el pH no varió entre las situaciones estudiadas; los valores de CO disminuyeron (40%) con la intensificación de la agricultura; la concentración de B y Zn se redujo en un 50% de la condición prístina a los lotes con larga historia agrícola; el Cu no sufrió alteraciones; Fe y Mn no muestran una tendencia clara de cambio en función del uso del suelo. En algunos casos podrían ocurrir deficiencias de Zn, por lo que debería controlarse rutinariamente su concentración, especialmente en los sistemas intensivos, para asegurar una disponibilidad adecuada a las necesidades de los cultivos. En todos los sistemas de uso analizados los tenores de micronutrientes presentaron elevada variabilidad.
