RESUMO: Os estudos visando o melhoramento de lúpulo (Humulus lupulus) no Brasil são recentes e buscam estabelecer a autossuficiência da produção. O conhecimento da variabilidade dos genótipos disponíveis no país é de fundamental importância para o desenvolvimento de um programa de melhoramento de lúpulo. O objetivo do trabalho foi identificar genitores de lúpulo com potencial agronômico e cervejeiro para o Planalto Catarinense, Brasil. Foi utilizado o delineamento em blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 3x4 com 12 tratamentos: Fator 1: três anos de cultivo (2019, 2020 e 2021) e combinado com o fator 2: quatro genótipos (Cascade, Chinook, Columbus e Hallertau). Os caracteres avaliados foram a massa fresca de plantas (MFP, g), massa verde de cones (MTV, g), a massa seca de cones (MSC, g), os teores de alfa-ácidos (ALFA, %) e a produção (PROD, g per planta). O genótipo Hallertauer demonstrou melhor desempenho e comportamento diferenciado para os caracteres de massa fresca de plantas, massa seca de cones e produção, quando comparado aos demais. Assim, a partir destes resultados observou-se que, existe variação disponível ao melhoramento genético do lúpulo para esses caracteres, fator que permitirá obter ganhos produtivos no desenvolvimento de novas cultivares, a partir deste genótipo promissor. The objective of the research was to characterize and identify hop parents with agronomic and brewing potential for the Planalto Catarinense region, Brazil. RESUMO: O lúpulo (Humulus lupulus L.) possui grande importância econômica no planalto serrano do estado de Santa Catarina, uma vez que existem inúmeras cervejarias nesta região do Brasil. Como as cultivares disponíveis no país carecem de bons atributos qualitativos e apresentam baixa produtividade de cones, existe grande demanda por genótipos melhorados. Os resultados de experimentos de cruzamento dialélico aumentam a compreensão dos processos de herança e dos mecanismos de controle associados à transferência de alelos com ação aditiva ou não aditiva, permitindo assim que os geneticistas explorem os benefícios da heterose. Os objetivos deste estudo foram avaliar as capacidades de combinação geral e específica (CGC e CEC, respectivamente) de quatro genótipos de lúpulo e obter híbridos F1 com características agronômicas superiores às dos genitores e habilidade para se adaptar às condições ambientais do planalto catarinense. Os cruzamentos dialélicos parciais foram realizados em delineamento de blocos casualizados envolvendo 14 tratamentos, i.e. dois genitores masculinos (Cascade e Hallertauer), quatro genitores femininos (Columbus, Chinook, Cascade e Hallertauer) e oito combinações híbridas, com três repetições cada. Os resultados mostraram que a CEC dos genitores foi o mecanismo de controle predominante para a manifestação nos híbridos das características comprimento do ramo lateral, altura de inserção do primeiro cone, massa verde da planta e produtividade de cones. Algumas combinações entre genitores também manifestaram CGC elevada, indicando a presença de alelos favoráveis com ação aditiva. ABSTRACT: Hops (Humulus lupulus L.) are of particular economic importance in the highlands of the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, by virtue of the number of breweries in the region. However, since the cultivars currently available in the country present poor qualitative attributes and low cone productivity, there is considerable demand for improved genotypes. The results of diallel crossing experiments help to increase our understanding of inheritance processes and the mechanisms controlling the transfer of alleles with additive or non-additive action, thereby allowing breeders to explore the benefits of heterosis. The present study evaluated the general and specific combining abilities (GCA and SCA, respectively) of four hop genotypes and to obtain F1 hybrids with agronomic traits superior to those of the parents and the ability to adapt to the environmental conditions in the Santa Catarina highlands. Partial diallel crosses were performed using a randomized complete block design involving 14 treatments, namely two male parents (Cascade and Hallertauer), four female parents (Columbus, Chinook, Cascade and Hallertauer) and eight hybrid combinations, with three repetitions each. The results showed that SCA was the predominant controlling mechanism for the manifestation in hybrids of the traits length of the lateral branch, height of insertion of the first cone, plant green mass and cone productivity. Some parental combinations also exhibited high GCA, indicating the presence of favorable alleles with additive action. ABSTRACT In response to global concerns over food scarcity, the sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam) has emerged as a promising alternative due to its rich composition of carbohydrates (starch), protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. This study aims to assess the physicochemical characteristics and nutritional content of different sweet potato landraces cultivated in Yucatan, Mexico. The study involved the evaluation of eight landraces of sweet potato cultivated in traditional farming systems, assessing both physicochemical and proximate composition variables, and determining the starch yield, starch color, protein content, swelling degree, and starch solubility index. The sweet potato landraces showed values ranging from acidic to slightly neutral pH (6-6.4). The yellow sweet potato II, purple sweet potato, and pink sweet potato landraces displayed high levels of total soluble solids with a range of 12.5 to 14.33 °Brix. Significant differences were observed in both peel and root pulp coloration. The pink, yellow, purple I, mamey, yellow II, and purple sweet potato landraces, presented elevated percentages of carbohydrates (85.0% to 89.0%), fats (1.1% to 1.5%), protein (3.5% to 5.1%), fiber (4.0% to 5.0%), and ash (3.5% to 4.0%). The mamey sweet potato and pink sweet potato landraces showed higher starch yields. Swelling power and starch solubility index peaked at a temperature of 90 °C. These results highlight the significance of sweet potato landraces cultivated in Yucatan as a valuable genetic resource with nutritional potential, which can be included in the diet of people, genetic improvement and species conservation programs.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to characterize the occurrence, duration, and intensity of the flushes of vegetative growth in two peach cultivars of Prunus persica L. Batsch, grown as a pioneer endeavor at a high-altitude tropical climate site in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The observational experiment was carried out in 2017/18 and 2018/19 on the ‘Tropic Beauty’ and ‘BRS Kampai’ cultivars by an evaluation of the number and duration of flushes of vegetative growth during the year over two cycles. The number of fruit-bearing shoots, total number of leaves and shoot length were also assessed. At harvest, fruit load and diameter were determined and grouped into diameter ranges. The number of hours recorded at different temperature ranges, < 10.0 °C; 10.1-15.0 °C; 15.1-20.0 °C; 20.1-25.0 °C; > 25.1 °C, were summed separately and divided into daily and nightly periods. The peach tree has an unusual vegetative growth pattern when cultivated in a tropical area, which occurs in two flushes, with the first flush occurring from budbreak to fruit harvest between June and Sept, forming short shoots (less than 10 cm), with early shoot growth cessation, with a limited leaf number that can potentially diminish the supply of carbohydrates to the fruit, leading to smaller growth. The second flush occurs after harvest, between Oct and Dec, when there is an increase in daily temperature and precipitation, and no competition with fruits. Abstract The climatic and edaphic conditions of the semi-arid Brazilian Northeast region limit the production of several annual crops, including cotton. The aim of this study was to estimate the genetic parameters and select water stress tolerant cotton lines based on yield and fiber quality traits. Twenty cotton lines were evaluated in Alagoinha-PB over two years under rainfed conditions. Individual and joint analysis of variance was performed on the data. Genetic parameters were determined, and lines were selected using the selection index. The lines CNPA SA 2019-115, CNPA SA 2019-185, CNPA SA 2019-109, and CNPA SA 2019-165 were selected for further tests in the region for recommendation of new cultivars. In this work, the support, cashew apple bagasse (CAB), was chemically modified with divinyl sulfone (DVS), and it was evaluated to immobilize Candida antarctica lipase A (CAL-A). The best activation conditions of CAB support were defined by an advanced experimental design using the Taguchi method, assessing five factors at four levels (concentration of DVS, ionic strength, pH, temperature, and time). The support and biocatalyst (CAB-DVS-CAL-A) were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), elemental analysis, thermogravimetry (TGA), scanning microscopy (SEM), fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) and electrophoresis. The optimal conditions to activate the support were DVS concentration of 1.4 mol L-1 (3 mL of DVS in 20 mL of reaction volume), a concentration of sodium bicarbonate buffer at 5 mmol L-1, pH 3.0 at 30 °C for 12 h. The immobilization on CAB-DVS promoted increased thermal stability at 70 °C and different pHs of CAL-A. BACKGROUND Eosinophils are granulocytes that rapidly increase frequency in the bloodstream during helminthic infections and allergic responses. They are found in tissue infected by Leishmania during early disease, but their role during infection is not entirely understood. OBJECTIVES We aim to compare the disease due to Leishmania amazonensis in BALB/c and Δdbl-GATA1 mice, which lack eosinophils. METHODS BALB/c and Δdbl-GATA1 mice infected with L. amazonensis were observed for several weeks. The parasite load and dissemination pattern were assessed. FINDINGS The Δdbl-GATA1 mice developed an anticipated dissemination of L. amazonensis and a worsening disease. No differences were found in the lesion development or the parasite load in the footpad among Δdbl-GATA1 mice and BALB/c eight weeks after infection. However, nine weeks after infection, massive growth of metastatic lesions appeared in several parts of the skin in Δdbl-GATA1 mice, weeks earlier than BALB/c. We observed increased parasites in the bloodstream, probably an essential dissemination route. Thirteen weeks after infection, metastatic lesions were found in all Δdbl-GATA1 mice. BACKGROUND: In Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, there is a low evocation of the diagnosis of sickle cell disease (SCD) by first-level healthcare providers (HCPs), most likely because of poor knowledge of the disease AIM: To assess the levels of knowledge and practices of SCD and to identify determinants of the practices among primary HCPs SETTING: Healthcare facilities in Selembao health zone in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo METHODS: A cross-sectional study of HCPs randomly selected through a two-stage sampling design. Data were collected using a pre-tested interviewer-administered questionnaire. Univariate and bivariate analysis were done to describe the levels of knowledge and practices of SCD. Factors associated with better practices on SCD were determined using multiple linear regression. The threshold for statistical significance was p ˂ 0.05 RESULTS: A total of 318 HCPs, which included 80 physicians and 238 nurses, participated in the study. The participants showed different scores on the components of the knowledge. All the participants showed poor practices on SCD. Multiple linear regression retained overall knowledge of SCD as a significant predictor of better practice for physicians. Knowledge of SCD and duration of work experience were significant predictors of better practices among nurses CONCLUSION: The practices of healthcare providers on SCD were far from optimal. RESUMO Aplicações exógenas de compostos químicos estimulam modificações no metabolismo vegetal e conferem tolerância a diferentes estresses ambientais, incluindo o déficit hídrico. Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo avaliar os efeitos do uso de ácido salicílico (AS) e prolina na redução do estresse hídrico em uma variedade tradicional de feijão-caupi em um clima típico do semiárido brasileiro. Foi utilizado um delineamento inteiramente casualizado em esquema fatorial 2 × 4 com cinco repetições. Foram utilizadas duas lâminas de irrigação, correspondentes a 100% (W100) e 50% da evapotranspiração diária (W50) e quatro tratamentos com atenuadores: controle (água destilada), AS (550 mg L-1), prolina (690 mg L-1) e 690 mg L-1 prolina + 550 mg L-1 AS. Os elicitores promoveram alterações no metabolismo osmótico e antioxidante, o que pode contribuir para o mecanismo de tolerância das plantas de feijão-caupi sob restrição hídrica. A aplicação de ácido salicílico aumentou a síntese de osmorreguladores, a concentração de proteínas e modulou a atividade de enzimas antioxidantes em plantas de feijão-caupi sob estresse. A concentração de prolina aumentou sinergicamente nas plantas tratadas com prolina e AS, principalmente em 50% de reposição de água.

ABSTRACT Exogenous applications of chemical compounds stimulate changes in plant metabolism and promote tolerance to different environmental stresses, including water deficit. This study aimed to evaluate the ability of salicylic acid (SA) and proline (PRO) to reduce water stress in a traditional variety of cowpea in a typical Brazilian semiarid climate. A completely randomized design was used in a 2 × 4 factorial scheme, with five replicates. Two irrigation regimes were evaluated corresponding to 100% (W100) and 50% of daily evapotranspiration (W50), respectively, with the addition of the following four attenuators: control (distilled water), SA (550 mg L-1), PRO (690 mg L-1), and 690 mg L-1 PRO + 550 mg L-1 SA. The treatments promoted changes in osmotic and antioxidant metabolism, which may contribute to the tolerance mechanisms of cowpea plants to water stress. The application of SA increased osmoregulator synthesis and protein concentrations, and modulated antioxidant enzyme activity in the cowpea plants under water stress. PRO concentrations increased synergistically in plants treated with PRO and SA, particularly in 50% of water replacement.

RESUMO: Physalis peruviana L. (fisális) apresenta grande potencial econômico devido ao sabor diferenciado de seus frutos. A produtividade dos pomares brasileiros é baixa em função do número limitado de variedades ou cultivares disponíveis. O principal entrave na seleção de genótipos superiores é a falta de informação sobre a variabilidade genética dentro e entre as populações de fisális e, possivelmente, a base genética limitada das mesmas, que pode ser explicada pelos processos evolutivos, de domesticação e de seleção das populações naturais ou artificiais. A fisális cultivada atualmente no Brasil é tetraploide e tal poliploidia pode ter levado ao isolamento reprodutivo da espécie, o qual impede a ocorrência de hibridação intraespecífica. As populações cultivadas provêm de um pool genético comum e, além disso, sofreram um longo processo de domesticação e seleção realizadas empiricamente pelos agricultores. Porém, na Colômbia e em outros países andinos existem populações silvestres que exibem diversidade genética que, embora sejam fundamentais para a conservação da espécie, apresentam baixo potencial para o desenvolvimento de genótipos com características agronômicas superiores. A fim de criar e ampliar a variabilidade genética de fisális, os melhoristas tem empregado várias estratégias incluindo a indução de mutação, a duplicação cromossômica e a hibridação inter e intraespecífica. Além disso, a produção de linhagens duplo-haploides a partir da cultura de anterasin vitro vem demonstrando bons resultados para a seleção de híbridos. Os genótipos mutantes e/ou híbridos obtidos através dos métodos citados em associação com os de seleção genômica ampla podem gerar cultivares com características agronômicas superiores.

ABSTRACT: Physalisperuviana L. (physalis) has significant economic potential by virtue of the unique flavor of its fruit. However, the productivity of Brazilian plantations is low because of the limited number of varieties or cultivars available. The main obstacle in the selection of superior genotypes is the lack of information about genetic variability within- and between- populations and limited genetic basis that has likely resulted from evolutionary, domestication and selection processes of the natural or artificial populations. Physalis currently cultivated in Brazil is tetraploid, and such polyploidy may have led to the reproductive isolation of the species, preventing the occurrence of intraspecific hybridization. Moreover, cultivated populations derive from a common gene pool and have undergone a long process of domestication and selection carried out empirically by farmers. In Colombia and other Andean countries there are wild populations that exhibit genetic diversity which; although, fundamental for the conservation of the species, have low potential for the development of genotypes with superior agronomic traits. In order to create and expand the genetic variability of physalis, breeders have employed various strategies including induction of mutation, chromosome duplication, and interspecific and intraspecific hybridization. Furthermore, the production of double haploid lines from in vitro anther cultures has shown good results in the selection of hybrids. The mutant genotypes and/or hybrids obtained using these methods in association with those of wide genomic selection can generate cultivars with superior agronomic traits.

Abstract In addition to destroying the leaves, stems, pods, and grains of soybean (Glycine max), Spodoptera frugiperda larvae may also have the cut off behavior in the seedlings close to the ground, harming the establishment of the soybean crop. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the consequences of the fall armyworm attack by adopting the cut off behavior, which has been similarly documented for black cutworm (Agrotis ipsilon) in newly emerged soybean plants. The treatments were five levels of infestation with 0, 5, 10, 20 and 40 larvae per m2. Three variables were assessed: (1) stand (relationship between attacked and initial number of plants), (2) types and amounts of injured structures, such as hypocotyl (embryonic shoot), and the cotyledons (seed leaves), and (3) level of defoliation. The variables were collected every 24 hours until the pupal stage. Additionally, the final stand of the seedlings was quantified, with the highest injury intensity observed in the plots that contained the highest number of larvae. In the second experiment, the dynamics of movement and attacks of plants by S. frugiperda larvae at the following times of the day: 07:00, 10:00, 13:00, 16:00, 19:00 and 21:00 were analyzed with supervised machine learning models. The injury caused by S. frugiperda with the behavior of the cut off and the voracity of the larvae were evident in the structures (hypocotyl and cotyledons) of the evaluated plants. RESUMO: Consórcio é o processo de plantar duas ou mais safras simultaneamente no mesmo campo, a fim de fornecer maiores serviços de ecossistema (ou seja, serviços relacionados ao uso sustentável da terra e da água, mitigação das mudanças climáticas e restauração do ecossistema) para as lavouras. No sul do México, o consórcio cereal-leguminosa é uma prática tradicional de cultivo que está diminuindo com o tempo. Este artigo fornece uma revisão da literatura sobre os benefícios e limitações potenciais do consórcio milho-leguminosa para fazendas de pequena escala no sul do México. Esta revisão foi escrita para explorar e elucidar os diferentes serviços ecossistêmicos fornecidos por sistemas consorciados de milho e leguminosa. Essas informações ajudarão os agricultores a saber como fazer um melhor uso dos sistemas consorciados de cereais e leguminosas para aumentar a produtividade do milho, melhorar sua subsistência socioeconômica e melhorar as práticas agrícolas de conservação no sul do México.

ABSTRACT: Intercropping is the process of planting two or more crops simultaneously in the same field in order to provide greater ecosystem services (i.e. services related to sustainable land and water use, climate change mitigation, and ecosystem restoration). In southern Mexico, the cereal-legume intercropping is a traditional cropping practice that is declining overtime. This paper provides a literature review of the potential benefits and constraints of a maize-legume intercropping for small-scale farms in southern Mexico. This review explored and elucidated the different ecosystem services delivered by maize-legume intercropping systems. This information will help farmers know how to make a better use of cereal-legume intercropping systems to increase maize yields, improve their socioeconomic conditions, and enhance conservation agricultural practices in southern Mexico.

BACKGROUND: The Lamiaceae family is one of the largest still not covered by the Flore d'Afrique centrale (except Premnoideae and Viticoideae) and many specimens are left unidentified in collections. OBJECTIVES: To prepare the treatment of subfamilies Lamioideae and Scutellari-oideae, herbarium materials have been revised. METHODS: Herbarium material from BR, BRLU and POZG was studied. RESULTS: Ten taxa (9 species and 1 variety) are reported as new to The Democratic Republic of the Congo (D.R. Congo) and Burundi: Achyrospermum africanum, A. axillare, A. oblongifolium, A. tisserantii, Leucas deflexa var. kondowensis, L. fulvipila, L. songeana, Stachys pseudohumifusa subsp. minutiflora, S. pseudonigricans, Tinnea gracilis. For several species, the new localities are remarkably distant from the species' previously known distribution area. New localities of five rare taxa are also included (Achyrospermum micranthum, Leucas nyassae, L. stormsii var. parviflora, Tinnea coerulea var. linearifolia, T. platyphylla). Many new localities are situated in regions subject to strong anthropogenic pressure. CONCLUSION: The new records increase the number of accepted species of Lami-oideae and Scutellarioideae in Central Africa by 27%.

Resumo As condições de cultivo são fatores determinantes que afetam a qualidade das flores de corte. Diante disso, objetivou-se, neste estudo, avaliar o crescimento vegetativo, floração e vida de vaso de variedades de gladíolos comerciais no semiárido brasileiro, sob diferentes condições de sombreamento. Duas variedades de gladíolos (Jester e Rose Friendship) foram cultivadas em duas condições: sol pleno e 70% de sombreamento. Avaliou-se a biometria em 60 dias após o plantio e a taxa de crescimento da cultura aos 15-30, 30-45 e 45-60 dias para as variáveis: número de perfilhos, diâmetro do colo, número de folhas e altura da planta. Após 45 dias, avaliou-se a massa fresca, massa seca e conteúdo relativo de água total da parte área e da parte radicular das plantas. Após a colheita, as hastes foram mantidas em temperatura de 22±3 °C e umidade relativa (UR) de 60%. A cada dois dias, realizou-se avaliação visual, além de avaliação do pH da solução, variação no volume de água e perda de massa fresca. O cultivo com 70% de sombreamento resultou em maior acúmulo de biomassa na parte aérea das plantas de gladíolos, maior diâmetro do colo e altura. A variedade Rose Friendship resultou em maior translocação de massa seca para a parte aérea das plantas. Isso resultou em maior altura. Por outro lado, as hastes de gladíolos provenientes do cultivo nas condições de pleno sol resultaram em maior vida de vaso: 10 dias em condições de conservação a 22±3 °C e UR 60%.

Abstract Cultivation conditions are determining factors that affect the quality of cut flowers. The objective of this study was to evaluate the vegetative growth, flowering and vase life of commercial gladiolus cultivars under different shading conditions in the Brazilian semi-arid region. Two cultivars of gladiolus (Jester and Rose Friendship) were grown under two conditions: full sun and 70% shade. Biometrics were evaluated 60 days after planting and the growth rate of the crop was evaluated at 15-30, 30-45 and 45-60 days for the variables: number of tillers, stem diameter, number of leaves and plant height. After 45 days, the fresh weight, dry weight and total relative water content of the area and root parts of the plants were evaluated. After the harvest, the stems were kept at a temperature of 22±3 °C and relative humidity (RH) of 60%. Visual assessment, pH of the solution, variation in the volume of water and loss of fresh mass were measured every two days. Cultivation with 70% shading resulted in greater accumulation of biomass in the aerial part of gladiolus plants, greater neck diameter and height. The Rose Friendship cultivar underwent a greater translocation of dry matter to the aerial part of the plants, resulting in greater height. On the other hand, the gladiolus stems from cultivation under full sun conditions resulted in longer vase life, 10 days under conservation conditions at 22±3 °C and RH 60%.
