In last decades, technical-scientific investigations into cultural heritage assets have increasingly become part of analysis methodologies accessible to professionals from different areas for a broad understanding of the complex material and historical nature of objects. In this interdisciplinary word, the painting “Costureiras” by Tarsila do Amaral (1886-1973), from 1950, was studied by ultraviolet-induced visible luminescence (UVL), infrared image (IR) and macro X-ray fluorescence scanning (MA-XRF) techniques. Serial numbers are marks present on several day-to-day objects, created by manufacturers for purposes such as quality control, product tracking and to prevent counterfeiting. In the case of firearms, these characters can be obliterated or damaged by natural processes or intentionally by criminals to prevent positive identification of stolen property. One non-destructive method employed by crime laboratories for the restoration of obliterated characters is the magnetic particle method. The present work aims to study the synthesis and application of waste-made magnetic nanoparticles in the recovery of adulterated markings. A set of analytical-grade materials and metallic waste magnetic nanoparticles were synthesized for comparison purposes. Chemical characterization tests by X-ray fluorescence, morphological tests by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and magnetization tests by vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) were performed. The efficacy of the synthesized nanoparticles was tested on 1020 steel plates previously engraved and adulterated by sanding. Both homemade magnetic nanoparticles demonstrated superior performance compared to commercial magnetic particles. Abstract Acupuncture is a therapy that is over 2000 years old, having recently become popular as a practice in Western culture. This therapy consists of inserting fine needles to alleviate symptoms such as pain or nausea. This article focuses on a pneumothorax secondary to acupuncture case. A 20-year-old man came to the Emergency Department with pleuritic pain in the right scapular region. The pain appeared after an acupuncture session performed for low back pain. On physical examination, a eupneic patient was observed, but with some difficulty in completing sentences, with O2 saturation of 98% in room air, with a slight decrease in vesicular murmur on auscultation of the upper right hemithorax and hypertympanism on percussion of the same area, with notorious pain facies, pain on right intercostal palpation and two dorsal punctiform wounds compatible with the insertion of needles. Chest X-ray revealed a right pneumothorax, so a chest drain was placed. After resolution, the user was discharged with indication for control in primary health care.

Esta terapêutica consiste na inserção de agulhas finas para minorar sintomas como dor ou náusea. O presente artigo centra-se num caso de pneumotórax secundário à acupuntura. Um homem de 20 anos recorreu ao Serviço de Urgência com dor pleurítica na região escapular direita. A dor surgiu após sessão de acupuntura realizada por lombodorsalgia. No exame objetivo observou-se um doente eupneico, mas com dificuldade em completar frases, com saturação de O2 de 98% a ar ambiente, com diminuição discreta do murmúrio vesicular à auscultação do hemitórax direito superior e hipertimpanismo na percussão da mesma área, com notória fácies de dor, dor à palpação intercostal direita e duas feridas punctiformes dorsais compatíveis com a inserção das agulhas. A radiografia de tórax revelou um pneumotórax à direita, tendo sido colocado um dreno torácico. Após resolução, o utente teve alta com indicação para controlo nos cuidados de saúde primários.

ABSTRACT This study investigated the effectiveness of using the X-ray technique to assess the viability of papaya seeds. The X-ray images were performed in eight replicates of 25 seeds, placed on transparent acrylic plates on double-sided adhesive tape, previously identified, and then submitted to radiation in X-ray equipment "HP Faxitron". After exposure to X-ray radiation, the seeds were submitted to the germination test in rolls of germitest paper and kept in a germination chamber at 20-30 °C for 30 days. Seedlings were photographed and evaluated as normal seedlings, abnormal and non-germinated seeds. Afterward, the X-ray images and the seedlings from the same seeds were visually compared, and the X-ray images clearly showed seeds with and without internal filling. All abnormal seedlings were full seeds; therefore, X-ray images were not able to separate normal and abnormal. A 100% accuracy was verified by comparing the X-ray images and their respective seedlings, full seeds originated normal or abnormal seedlings, and empty seeds corresponded to non-germinated seeds. Therefore, using X-ray images is a promising technique to identify the viability of papaya seeds. The automated analysis of X-ray images is a simple, fast, and efficient technique to provide information on seed viability and generate parameters related to their germination capacity. Neste estudo, apresenta-se o uso de um aparato experimental destinado a práticas de ensino visando a determinação do coeficiente de atenuação do chumbo para fótons de raios gama provenientes de uma fonte de 137Cs (fótons com energia de aproximadamente 662 keV). Tradicionalmente, essa determinação é realizada utilizando-se como material absorvedor placas de chumbo de espessuras conhecidas. Entretanto, em geral, esse enfoque leva a resultados discrepantes em relação ao valor do coeficiente de atenuação teórico para o chumbo, com desvios em torno de 15%. No método aqui apresentado, sugere-se a substituição das placas por esferas ou pó de chumbo. Os resultados obtidos mostram que o método proposto reduziu sensivelmente os desvios do coeficiente de atenuação medido em relação aos valores teóricos (simulados). Contents related to the modern physics field involve the knowledge of the production and interaction of radiation with matter. The attenuation of the radiation evidences the macroscopic manifestation of this interaction. This study presents an apparatus intended for teaching practices to determine the lead mass attenuation coefficient for gamma-ray photons from a source of 137Cs (photons with energy of approximately 662 keV). Traditionally, this determination is performed using lead plates of known thicknesses. However, this focus generally produces discrepant results related to the mass attenuation coefficient adopted values, with deviations around 15%. In the approach presented here, which is innovative, the plates were replaced by small spheres or powders of the analyzed material (lead). The results show that this substitution significantly reduced the deviations from the theoretical values. In the best experimental condition, the errors were between 2% and 4% for the spheres and the powder, respectively. RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar o efeito do hormônio de crescimento recombinante (rHC) na composição corporal e no perfil metabólico de crianças pré-púberes com baixa estatura, nascidas pequenas para a idade gestacional (PIG) antes e depois de 18 meses de tratamento. Métodos: Estudo clínico, não randomizado e pareado. Foram incluídas crianças nascidas PIG, com peso e/ou altura ao nascer <-2 desvios padrão (DP) para idade gestacional e sexo, pré-púberes, nascidas a termo, de ambos os sexos, com indicação de tratamento com rGH. A intervenção foi realizada com rGH biossintético com doses variando de 0,03 a 0,05 mg/kg/dia, administrado por via subcutânea, uma vez ao dia ao deitar-se. A massa magra total (LM) e a massa gorda total (MG) foram determinadas por meio de absorciometria de raios X de dupla energia (DXA), e o perfil metabólico foi avaliado com dosagens de insulina, glicemia, IGF-1 e perfil lipídico. Resultados: Doze pacientes (nove meninas, 8,17±2,39 anos) foram avaliados; três pacientes abandonaram o estudo. ABSTRACT Objective: To assess the effect of recombinant growth hormone (rGH) on body composition and metabolic profile of prepubertal short children born small for gestational age (SGA) before and after 18 months of treatment. Methods: It is a clinical, non-randomized, and paired study. Children born SGA, with birth weight and/or length <-2 standard deviations (SD) for gestational age and sex, prepubertal, born at full term, of both genders, with the indication for treatment with rGH were included. The intervention was performed with biosynthetic rGH at doses ranging from 0.03 to 0.05 mg/kg/day, administered subcutaneously, once a day at bedtime. Total lean mass (LM) and total fat mass (FM) were carried out using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and the metabolic profile was assessed for insulin, glycemia, IGF-1 levels and lipid profile. Results: Twelve patients (nine girls, 8.17±2.39 y) were evaluated; three patients dropped out of the study. There was an increase of LM adjusted for length (LMI) (p=0.008), LMI standard deviation score (SDS) adjusted for age and sex (p=0.007), and total LM (p<0.001). The percentage of body fat (BF%) and abdominal fat (AF) remained unaltered in relation to the beginning of treatment. Pure and cobalt-doped 3D ZnO were produced using the microwave (MW)-ultraviolet (UV)-visible (Vis) radiation-assisted hydrothermal method (MW-UV-Vis HM). Using experimental design, the effects of cobalt and UV-Vis radiation during the synthesis stage on the physicochemical properties of the materials were evaluated with different characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, diffuse reflectance, and electrochemistry. The presence of cobalt had a great influence on the reduction of charge donors in the ZnO matrix and had their photocatalytic properties improved when produced under the effect of UV-Vis radiation. AISI 420 steel samples were subjected to three heat treatment conditions: annealed, hardened, and tempered at 400°C, followed by low-temperature nitriding using N2, H2, and varying Ar proportions in a pulsed DC glow discharge. The study aimed to investigate the impact of varying Ar content (10–50 vol.%) on glow discharge characteristics and surface properties of nitrided samples, using an 80% N2 + 20% H2 base gas mixture. The samples underwent characterization including optical microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, microhardness, and roughness measurements. Plasma characterization was conducted using optical emission spectroscopy. The results indicated that higher Ar concentrations led to increased thickness of the nitrided layer (up to 67%), as well as hardness (up to 14%) and surface roughness (up to 50%). These improvements stemmed from increased Ar-based species bombardment on the surface, enhancing the cleaning effect of surface oxides. This facilitated nitrogen adsorption onto the steel surface, increasing the atomic nitrogen concentration in the outermost layer of the steel. The increased nitrogen concentration facilitated diffusion, resulting in significant physical-chemical reactions at the surface-plasma interface. Abstract This research evaluated the use of industrial ash from eucalyptus chips in the biosorption of sodium dipyrone with the subsequent, study of its potential in Portland cement matrix. The biosorbent was characterized by the point of zero charge and the surface area. For comparison, before and after the biosorption process, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry were performed. Regarding the study of the potential of industrial ash after biosorption (AAB), it was characterized by analyzing specific mass, moisture, loss on fire, and X-ray fluorescence, as well as by X-ray diffraction, modified Chapelle, pozzolanic activity index with lime, and performance index with cement, compressive strength, and tensile strength by diametral compression. The biosorption tests were carried out in batch, it being possible to observe that at 298.15 K, 130 rpm, without pH adjustment approximately 93% of commercial dipyrone was removed. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model fitted better with the experimental data and the process was characterized as exothermic and spontaneous. The chemical composition of ash and AAB showed a predominance of CaO followed by MgO, without the presence of an amorphous halo. In this study, nanostructured coatings of VN2/Fe3N/Fe4N are synthesized by Plasma Deposition (CCPD) using a vanadium cathodic cage and subject to cathodic and floating potential treatments. Microstructural and mechanical properties of coated SAE 1080 steel samples are investigated using X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Vickers microhardness (HV), and surface roughness analysis. The coating produced under cathodic potential treatment exhibited a nitride-based microstructure (VN2, Fe3N, Fe4N), with surface morphology consisting of clusters of granular structures with varied particle sizes. The coating produced under floating potential predominantly exhibited the iron nitride phase (Fe3N) with a morphology composed of uniformly sized grains. Microhardness testing showed that both layers exhibited more excellent plastic deformation resistance than the substrate. Roughness measurements confirmed a more organized microstructure profile for the sample treated under floating potential. This study demonstrates that the CCPD-produced cathodic potential coating can be utilized in tribological applications. ABSTRACT This article focuses on the discussion of the results obtained with non-invasive image and spectroscopic analyzes (to determine chemical elements and compounds) on the six paintings by the German artist, naturalized Italian, Massimo Campigli, that belong to the collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art of the University of São Paulo (MAC USP). Aspects of the artist’s trajectory, the plastic solutions of the artworks, along with the analyzes made with the spectroscopic techniques of energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF), Raman, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and the imaging techniques of visible photography (VIS), raking light (RAK), transmitted light (TRANS), visible ultraviolet fluorescence (UVF), infrared reflectography (IRR), and radiography (RAD) offer important information on the artist and on his work. RESUMO O câncer de pulmão (CP) é uma das neoplasias mais comuns e letais no Brasil, e apenas 15% dos pacientes são diagnosticados nos estágios iniciais. O tabagismo persiste como o responsável por mais de 85% de todos os casos. O rastreamento do CP (RCP) por meio da TC de baixa dosagem de radiação (TCBD) reduz a mortalidade do CP em 20%, e, quando combinado com a cessação do tabagismo, essa redução chega a 38%. Na última década, diversos países adotaram o RCP como recomendação de saúde populacional. No Brasil, embora ainda incipiente, a discussão sobre o tema é cada vez mais ampla e necessária. Com o intuito de aumentar o conhecimento e estimular o debate sobre o RCP, a Sociedade Brasileira de Cirurgia Torácica, a Sociedade Brasileira de Pneumologia e Tisiologia e o Colégio Brasileiro de Radiologia e Diagnóstico por Imagem constituíram um painel de especialistas para elaborar as recomendações para o RCP. As recomendações aqui apresentadas foram baseadas em revisão narrativa da literatura, com ênfase em grandes estudos populacionais, em revisões sistemáticas e em recomendações de diretrizes internacionais, sendo construídas após ampla discussão pelo grupo de especialistas. Os temas revisados foram os seguintes: porque rastrear, considerações gerais sobre tabagismo, epidemiologia do CP, critérios de elegibilidade, achados incidentais, lesões granulomatosas, modelos probabilísticos, requisitos mínimos da TCBD, aquisições volumétricas, riscos do rastreamento, estrutura mínima e papel da equipe multidisciplinar, conduta segundo o Lung CT Screening Reporting and Data System (Lung-RADS), custos vs. benefícios e perspectivas do rastreamento. ABSTRACT Although lung cancer (LC) is one of the most common and lethal tumors, only 15% of patients are diagnosed at an early stage. Smoking is still responsible for more than 85% of cases. Lung cancer screening (LCS) with low-dose CT (LDCT) reduces LC-related mortality by 20%, and that reduction reaches 38% when LCS by LDCT is combined with smoking cessation. In the last decade, a number of countries have adopted population-based LCS as a public health recommendation. Albeit still incipient, discussion on this topic in Brazil is becoming increasingly broad and necessary. With the aim of increasing knowledge and stimulating debate on LCS, the Brazilian Society of Thoracic Surgery, the Brazilian Thoracic Association, and the Brazilian College of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging convened a panel of experts to prepare recommendations for LCS in Brazil. The recommendations presented here were based on a narrative review of the literature, with an emphasis on large population-based studies, systematic reviews, and the recommendations of international guidelines, and were developed after extensive discussion by the panel of experts. The following topics were reviewed: reasons for screening; general considerations about smoking; epidemiology of LC; eligibility criteria; incidental findings; granulomatous lesions; probabilistic models; minimum requirements for LDCT; volumetric acquisition; risks of screening; minimum structure and role of the multidisciplinary team; practice according to the Lung CT Screening Reporting and Data System; costs versus benefits of screening; and future perspectives for LCS. ABSTRACT Currently in Brazil, large grain cultivation projects on Plinthosols are a reality, however, there is little or no knowledge of the real mechanism of formation of the plinthite feature, in addition to what is reported in the literature as being a product of oxidation-reduction processes of iron element. This study evaluates iron redoximorphic features and investigates their chemical and mineralogical composition in two profiles of Plinthosols from the Araguaia River plain (P1 and P2). The study strengthens the understanding of the pedogenetic processes involved in the formation of mottles and plinthite. In this sense, it assesses whether the formation mechanisms corroborate the literature. Soil features were sampled in the upper right and left position at the initial plinthic horizon, upper right and left position at the main plinthic horizon, and lower right position at the base horizon of the plinthite zone in the profile. Separated samples comprising the soil matrix, mottles, and plinthite under natural moisture conditions were ground into powder form for chemical determinations by X-ray fluorescence (XRF), sulfuric acid attack (H2SO4), sodium dithionite-citrate-bicarbonate (DCB), and ammonium acid oxalate; and mineralogical determinations by X-ray diffraction. Iron contents in all determined forms were always higher in the plinthite feature, intermediate in the mottle feature, and lower in the soil matrix feature. Most of the Fe in all redoximorphic features is included in the structure of primary minerals and their derivatives (vermiculite, illite, and VHEs). Only part of the iron present (about 35.40 % in P1 and 41.98 % in P2) is detected in the form of oxides such as goethite and hematite, which could be formed in redox processes. The mottle and plinthite features under study are not the product of the classic process of segregation, mobilization, and accumulation of iron as a consequence of redox processes. These features were formed or emerged as a result of a relatively slow and constant weathering process of their source material, which is gradually decomposed in an aqueous medium, releasing most of its components. These components include iron and more mobile elements such as bases and silicon, which leave the system through drainage water, and of which a small part may eventually recombine to form new less complex minerals such as kaolinite and oxides. Abstract As it is an infrequent etiology, the diagnosis of perianal tuberculosis is challenging, especially in the absence of a pulmonary focus. TB should be considered in the differential diagnosis of perianal ulcers, fistulas, abscesses, mainly in non-healing and recurrent anal lesions. Treatment with anti-TB agents can provide complete recovery. Furthermore, these lesions are often diagnosed later after complete histopathological and mycobacterial results, where the benefit of avoiding morbid multiple surgeries by effective anti-TB treatment is lost. We reported a rare case of an immuno-competent patient with perianal TB, which was the first manifestation of the disease. A fit-and-well man in his 20s presented a large perianal abscess. Unexpectedly, his chest X-ray showed a rounded hyper-transparency in the left lung. The abscess was drained. Posterior investigation with culture analysis from pus swabs and sputum revealed the presence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex infection. After completing the 6 months of oral administration of anti-TB drugs, the patient was asymptomatic.
