This work evaluated the use of corncob as a support for the immobilization of an extracellular fructosyltransferase (E.C. 2.4.1.9) from Aspergillus oryzae IPT-301, aiming at the synthesis of a stable biocatalyst for the production of fructooligosaccharides. The transfructosylation activity of the immobilized enzyme was maximized via experimental design. Additionally, the biochemical properties and stability of the immobilized enzyme, as well as the reaction kinetics, were determined. The enzyme immobilized on alkali-treated corncob showed the highest transfructosylation activity at 50 °C and pH 5.5. It also presented a wide pH stability and a half-life around 1.4 times greater than the soluble enzyme. Furthermore, the immobilized enzyme showed 53% of retention of catalytic activity in a second consecutive reaction cycle, showing the potential for reuse. These results suggest that alkali-treated corncob is a promising support material for the synthesis of heterogeneous biocatalysts aiming at fructooligosaccharide production, which can contribute to the valorization of this abundant agro-waste. Serial numbers are marks present on several day-to-day objects, created by manufacturers for purposes such as quality control, product tracking and to prevent counterfeiting. In the case of firearms, these characters can be obliterated or damaged by natural processes or intentionally by criminals to prevent positive identification of stolen property. One non-destructive method employed by crime laboratories for the restoration of obliterated characters is the magnetic particle method. The present work aims to study the synthesis and application of waste-made magnetic nanoparticles in the recovery of adulterated markings. A set of analytical-grade materials and metallic waste magnetic nanoparticles were synthesized for comparison purposes. Chemical characterization tests by X-ray fluorescence, morphological tests by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and magnetization tests by vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) were performed. The efficacy of the synthesized nanoparticles was tested on 1020 steel plates previously engraved and adulterated by sanding. RESUMO: A produção de manga (Mangifera indica) está se expandindo em muitos países e seus resíduos tem o potencial de ser usado para a fabricação de dietas para peixes. Este estudo avaliou a substituição parcial de fubá de milho por farinha de manga (FM) em dietas para piava (Megaleporinus obtusidens) em termos de performance zootécnica, glicose do plasma, enzimas intestinais e análise microbiológica. Piavas (n = 160) foram distribuídas em um esquema completamente randomizado (quatro tratamentos e quatro repetições) e alimentadas por 45 dias com dietas contendo diferentes níveis de inclusão de FM (0, 33, 66 e 100%). Não houve nenhuma contaminação microbiológica (bolor, coliformes totais, Bacillus cereus e Salmonella sp.) na FM. Os fenóis totais e taninos totais foram maiores na dieta com FM (P < 0.05). Dietas com 100% de fubá de milho substituído por MM reduziu a performance de crescimento e aumento a taxa de conversão alimentar (TCA) e os níveis de glicose nos peixes (P < 0.05). De acordo com a análise de regressão de segunda ordem, o nível ideal de inclusão de FM na dieta estimado com base no ganho de peso e o TCA foi de 23,68 e 19,75%, respectivamente (P < 0.05). ABSTRACT: Mango (Mangifera indica) production is expanding in many countries, and its discarded residues have the potential to be used in the manufacture of fish diets. This study evaluated replacing part of the corn meal (CM) with mango meal (MM) in diets for piava (Megaleporinus obtusidens) in terms of zootechnical performance, plasma glucose, and intestinal enzymes. Piavas (n = 160) were distributed in a completely randomized design (four treatments and four replications) and were fed for 45 days with diets containing different levels of MM inclusion (0, 33, 66, and 100%). There was no microbiological contamination (mold, total coliforms, Bacillus cereus, and Salmonellasp.) in MM. The MM diet had higher total phenols and total tannins (P < 0.05). Diets with 100% of the CM replaced by MM reduced the growth performance and increased the feed conversion ratio (FCR) and plasma glucose levels in piava (P < 0.05). According to the second-order regression analysis, the optimal level of MM inclusion in the diet estimated based on weight gain and FCR was 23.68 and 19.75%, respectively (P < 0.05). The gradual increase in MM levels replacing CM in the diet reduced the activity of the intestinal enzymes amylase, lipase, and alkaline protease (P < 0.05). In conclusion, we recommended replacing 19.75-23.68% of CM with MM, which can be used in piava diets. ABSTRACT Over-the-counter medications (OTC), also known as non-prescription drugs can be dispensed without a prescription. This study aimed to analyze the pharmacological profile, risk, and quality of evidence of OTC medications registered in Brazil. The databases of ANVISA and Micromedex synthesis were consulted. The indications for use were classified according to CIAP, the medications according to ATC, and the quality of evidence according to the GRADE method. A total of 188 OTC medications were identified, comprising 376 presentations. The groups related to the digestive tract and respiratory system had the highest number of drugs, each accounting for 19%. Overall, 61% of the drugs were classified as having high or moderate evidence, and 39% as low, very low, or lacking evidence. Despite the prevalence of higher-quality evidence, restrictions need to be highlighted, as approximately 55% of the drugs have a weak recommendation, 67% may not be used by children under the age of 6, 95% lack reliable safety information during pregnancy, and 87% lack clear information regarding use during lactation. Further research on the topic, supported self-care policies, and monitoring seem essential to better understand the risks and benefits associated with OTC medications, thus ensuring a safer and evidence-based clinical practice.

Resumo Fundamento: A Cardiomiopatia Chagásica Crônica (CCC) é causada por um processo inflamatório induzido pelo Trypanosoma cruzi, que leva à miocardite com fibrose reativa e reparativa. A CCC progride com alterações de perfusão miocárdica e eventos histopatológicos que afetam a Aptidão Cardiorrespiratória (ACR). Objetivos: Avaliamos os efeitos do Treinamento Físico Aeróbico (TFA) na perfusão miocárdica e nos comprometimentos morfológicos e funcionais relacionados à inflamação e fibrose em hamsters sírios com CCC. Como objetivo secundário, analisamos as áreas de secção transversa do músculo esquelético. Métodos: Hamsters com CCC e seus respectivos controles foram divididos em quatro grupos: CCC sedentário, CCC-TFA, controle sedentário e controle TFA. Sete meses após a infecção, os animais foram submetidos à ecocardiografia, à cintilografia de perfusão miocárdica e ao teste de esforço cardiopulmonar. TFA de intensidade moderada foi realizado durante cinquenta minutos, cinco vezes por semana, por oito semanas. Posteriormente, os animais foram reavaliados. A análise histopatológica foi realizada após os procedimentos acima mencionados. O nível de significância foi estabelecido em 5% em todas as análises (p<0,05). Resultados: Animais com CCC sedentários apresentaram piores Defeitos de Perfusão Miocárdica (DPM) ao longo do tempo, Fração de Ejeção do Ventrículo Esquerdo (FEVE) reduzida, e apresentaram mais inflamação e fibrose quando comparados aos demais grupos (análise ANOVA mista). Por outro lado, o TFA foi capaz de mitigar a progressão do DPM, atenuar a inflamação e a fibrose e melhorar a eficiência da ACR em animais CCC-TFA. Conclusão: Nosso estudo demonstrou que o TFA melhorou a disfunção cardíaca, DPM e reduziu a inflamação e a fibrose em modelos de hamster com CCC. Além disso, os animais CCC-SED apresentaram atrofia do músculo esquelético, enquanto os animais CCC-TFA apresentaram a AST do músculo esquelético preservada. Abstract Background: Chronic Chagas cardiomyopathy (CCC) is caused by an inflammatory process induced by Trypanosoma cruzi, which leads to myocarditis with reactive and reparative fibrosis. CCC progresses with myocardial perfusion abnormalities and histopathological events that affect cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF). Objectives: We evaluated the effects of aerobic physical training (APT) on myocardial perfusion and on morphological and functional impairments related with inflammation and fibrosis in Syrian hamsters with CCC. As a secondary objective, we analyzed the cross-sectional areas of the skeletal muscle. Methods: Hamsters with CCC and their respective controls were divided into four groups: CCC sedentary, CCC-APT, sedentary control and APT control. Seven months after infection, the animals underwent echocardiography, myocardial perfusion scintigraphy and cardiopulmonary exercise testing. Moderate-intensity APT was performed for fifty minutes, five times a week, for eight weeks. Subsequently, the animals were reassessed. Histopathological analysis was conducted after the above-mentioned procedures. The level of significance was set at 5% in all analyses (p<0.05). Results: CCC sedentary animals presented worse myocardial perfusion defects (MPD) over time, reduced left ventricle ejection fraction (LVEF) and showed more inflammation and fibrosis when compared to other groups (mixed ANOVA analysis). Conversely, APT was able to mitigate the progression of MPD, ameliorate inflammation and fibrosis and improve CRF efficiency in CCC-APT animals. Conclusions: Our study demonstrated that APT ameliorated cardiac dysfunction, MPD, and reduced inflammation and fibrosis in CCC hamster models. Additionally, CCC-SED animals presented skeletal muscle atrophy while CCC-APT animals showed preserved skeletal muscle CSA. RESUMO: O peixe-boi amazônico (Trichechus inunguis) é um mamífero aquático ameaçado de extinção. Apesar disso, poucos estudos investigaram patógenos nessa espécie que podem impactar a saúde animal e humana. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a frequência, distribuição e padrões de suscetibilidade antimicrobiana de Staphylococcus sp. e Escherichia coli pertencentes à microbiota nasal e retal de peixes-bois da Amazônia mantidos em cativeiro no Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia (INPA) (Amazonas, Brasil). Foram utilizados suabes retais e nasais de 44 peixes-boi de diferentes idades. O gênero Staphylococcus foi isolado do swab nasal de 32 (72,7%) animais, sendo que dois indivíduos apresentaram mais de uma espécie de Staphylococcus. S. sciuri foi a espécie mais comumente isolada. A resistência à penicilina foi observada em 13 (40,6%) isolados, sendo mais frequente do que os outros antimicrobianos testados (P = 0,01). Escherichia coli foi isolada dos suabes retais de todos os animais, sendo o filogrupo B1 o mais frequente entre as cepas obtidas (P = 0,0008). ABSTRACT: The Amazonian manatee (Trichechusinunguis) is an aquatic mammal threatened with extinction. However, few studies have investigated the pathogens in this species, which may affect both animal and human health. This study aimed to evaluate the frequency, distribution, and patterns of antimicrobial susceptibility of Staphylococcus spp. and Escherichiacoli colonizing the nasal and rectal cavities of Amazonian manatees kept in captivity at the National Institute for Amazonian Research (INPA) in the state of Amazonas, Brazil. Rectal and nasal swabs from 44 manatees of different ages were used in this study. The genus Staphylococcus was isolated from the nasal swabs of 32 (72.7%) animals, with two individuals harboring more than one species of Staphylococcus. S. sciuri was the most commonly isolated species. Resistance to penicillin was observed in 13 (40.6%) isolates, more frequent than the other antimicrobials tested (P = 0.01). E. coli was isolated from the rectal swabs of all animals, with phylogroup B1 being the most frequent among the strains obtained (P = 0.0008). Four isolates (6.8%) were positive for virulence factors, three of which were classified as enterotoxigenicE. coli (ETEC) and one as enteropathogenicE. coli (EPEC). Resumo A produção de marula na África tem uma importância social, econômica e medicinal significativa. A região semiárida de Minas Gerais, Brasil, apresenta grande potencial para o cultivo de marula, pois as condições edafoclimáticas se assemelham às de seu habitat nativo. Portanto, estudos relacionados à propagação desta espécie no semiárido são essenciais para avanços em diversas áreas relacionadas à produção de marula. As sementes de marula apresentam uma dormência ainda indefinida e os métodos para superar esta dormência não estão bem estabelecidos. Além disso, não foi estabelecido um protocolo para propagação vegetativa. Consequentemente, existem obstáculos a serem superados e viabilizar a produção comercial de mudas de marula. Constatou-se que há poucas pesquisas sobre esta cultura no Brasil, apesar do potencial para estabelecer o cultivo de marula na região semiárida do país, proporcionando mais uma opção alimentar para a população brasileira. Além das suas propriedades medicinais e do potencial de criação de emprego e geração de rendimentos em zonas áridas, o cultivo desempenha um papel na redução da pobreza e no fortalecimento da agricultura na região semiárida.

Abstract The production of marula in Africa holds significant social, economic, and medicinal importance. The semi-arid region of Minas Gerais, Brazil, has great potential for marula cultivation, as the soil and climatic conditions resemble those of its native habitat. Therefore, studies related to the propagation of this species in the semi-arid conditions are essential for advancements in various areas related to marula production. Marula seeds exhibit an as yet undefined dormancy, and methods for overcoming this dormancy have not been well-established. Additionally, a protocol for vegetative propagation has not been established. Consequently, there are obstacles to overcome and enable the commercial production of marula seedlings. Furthermore, there is limited research on this crop in Brazil, despite the potential to establish marula cultivation in the semi-arid region of the country, providing another food option for the Brazilian population. In addition to its medicinal properties and the potential for job creation and income generation in dryland areas, the cultivation play a role in poverty reduction and strengthening agriculture in the semi-arid region.

Resumen El herbicida tembotrione tiene un buen control de malezas y puede ser una herramienta importante en el cultivo del sorgo. Sin embargo, este herbicida está registrado en Brasil solo para maíz. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar la selectividad de la tembotrione asociada a la atrazine en diferentes dosis y etapas de desarrollo del grano de sorgo. Se realizaron dos experimentos en Rio Verde-GO y Montividiu-GO, Brasil en 2018. Se adoptó un diseño de bloques al azar con cuatro repeticiones, en un factorial 3x2+1+1, con tres etapas de desarrollo (V3, V5 y V7), dos dosis de tembotrione (37,8 y 75,6 g ha-1) asociada al herbicida atrazine (1,000 g ha-1), un tratamiento adicional con solo atrazine en V3 más un testigo sin herbicida. Los resultados permitieron observar síntomas visibles de fitotoxicidad cuando se aplicó la asociación entre los herbicidas tembotrione y atrazine en la etapa V3 y V5. Los síntomas incluyeron reducciones en la altura de la planta y el diámetro del tallo del sorgo y reducciones en la longitud de la panícula con la aplicación en la etapa V5. El herbicida tembotrione en dosis de 37,8 g ha-1 en asociación con atrazine en dosis de 1,000 g ha-1 fue selectivo para sorgo en grano cuando se aplicó en V7, sin causar reducción en el rendimiento de grano.

Abstract The herbicide tembotrione is effective against grassy weeds constituting an important tool in sorghum crops. However, in Brazil, this herbicide is only registered for corn. This study aimed to evaluate the selectiveness of tembotrione combined with atrazine at different doses and developmental stages of grain sorghum. Two experiments were conducted in Rio Verde and Montividiu, state of Goiás, Brazil, in 2018. A randomized block design with four replications, in a 3x2+1+1 factorial arrangement, tested three developmental stages (V3, V5 and V7), two doses of tembotrione (37.8 and 75.6 g ha-1) combined with the herbicide atrazine (1,000 g ha-1), an additional treatment only with atrazine at V3 and a control, free of herbicide. Evident phytotoxicity was observed with the combination of tembotrione and atrazine at V3 and V5 stages. Symptoms included reductions in plant height, sorghum stem diameter, panicle length, and cumulative dry mass of sorghum plant shoots. However, there was no influence on thousand grains mass, regardless of application stages. Tembotrione at 37.8 g ha-1 combined with atrazine at 1,000 g ha-1 was selective for grain sorghum when applied at V7, without affecting grain yield.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Specific types of violence such as intimate partner sexual violence and intimate partner homicide occur more frequently in rural areas. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to systematically review the literature on the knowledge and attitudes of rural healthcare providers regarding cases of domestic violence against women. DESIGN AND SETTING: Systematic review developed at Universidade Federal de Uberlândia. METHODS: We conducted an electronic search of six databases, which only included observational studies, regardless of the year, language, or country of publication, except for studies that used secondary data and were exclusively qualitative. Two reviewers performed the selection, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment using a specific Joanna Briggs Institute tool. RESULTS: Six studies met the inclusion criteria. All the studies had a low risk of bias. Approximately 38% of these professionals identified injuries caused by violence in patients. When asked about knowing the correct attitude to take in cases of confirmed violence, between 12% and 64% of rural healthcare providers answered positively; most of them would refer to specialized institutions and promote victim empowerment and counseling. The number of professionals with an educational background in the field ranged from 16% to 98%. CONCLUSIONS: The evident disparity across studies shows that some professionals have suboptimal knowledge and require training to adopt the correct attitude when identifying female victims of domestic violence in clinical practice. RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar o foco do olhar do pediatra durante a punção do calcanhar de neonatos. Métodos: Estudo prospectivo no qual pediatras, utilizando óculos de rastreamento visual, avaliaram a dor neonatal antes/depois de uma punção de calcanhar. Os pediatras pontuaram a dor de acordo com a sua percepção por meio de uma escala analógica verbal (0=sem dor; 10=dor máxima). Os desfechos analisados foram o número e o tempo das fixações visuais na face superior, face inferior e mãos, em dois períodos de 10 segundos, antes (PRÉ) e depois da punção (PÓS). Os resultados foram comparados entre os períodos e segundo a percepção da dor do pediatra: ausente/leve (escore: 0–5) e moderada/grave (escore: 6–10). Resultados: Vinte e quatro pediatras (31 anos, 92% sexo feminino) avaliaram 24 neonatos. A mediana do escore atribuído à dor do recém-nascido durante a punção do calcanhar foi 7,0 (intervalo interquartil: 5–8). ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the focus of pediatricians’ gaze during the heel prick of neonates. Methods: Prospective study in which pediatricians wearing eye tracker glasses evaluated neonatal pain before/after a heel prtick. Pediatricians scored the pain they perceived in the neonate in a verbal analogue numerical scale (0=no pain; 10=maximum pain). The outcomes measured were number and time of visual fixations in upper face, lower face, and hands, in two 10-second periods, before (pre) and after the puncture (post). These outcomes were compared between the periods, and according to pediatricians’ pain perception: absent/mild (score: 0–5) and moderate/intense (score: 6–10). Results: 24 pediatricians (31 years old, 92% female) evaluated 24 neonates. The median score attributed to neonatal pain during the heel prick was 7.0 (Interquartile range: 5–8). Compared to pre-, in the post-periods, more pediatricians fixed their gaze on the lower face (63 vs. 92%; p=0.036) and the number of visual fixations was greater on the lower face (2.0 vs. 5.0; p=0.018). Abstract Objective: To investigate the usefulness, reliability, quality, and content of Portuguese-language YouTube videos on COVID-19. Material and Methods: Three keywords selected on Google Trends were searched on YouTube, and the 60 first videos listed with each term were analyzed. Two calibrated researchers evaluated the reliability (DISCERN Modified Scale), the quality (Global Quality Score - GQS), and the usefulness of videos for the users (COVID-19 Specific Score - CSS). The number of views, likes, and engagement were also analyzed. The data were evaluated by the Mann-Whitney test and Spearman correlation (α=5%). Results: 59 videos were included. The average scores of quality, reliability, and usefulness were 3.0 (±1.1), 3.2 (± 0.8), and 1.5 (± 0.9), respectively. Two-thirds of the videos (64.4%) had low/moderate quality, and the majority (76.2%) were about signs and symptoms. The numbers of views (p=0.005), likes (p=0.006), and engagement (p=0.014) were significantly higher in moderate/good quality videos. The number of comments (p=0.007), duration of videos (p=0.004), and the DISCERN score (p<0.001) were significantly higher in videos made by health professionals. The general quality of the videos was positively correlated to the CSS scores, number of views, likes, and engagement (p<0.05). ABSTRACT Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) is a neurologic emergency potentially fatal. This rare side effect is most commonly associated with first-generation antipsychotics and less frequently with atypical or second-generation antipsychotics. The diagnosis relies on both clinical and laboratory criteria, with other organic and psychiatric conditions being ruled out. CASE REPORT: A 39-year-old female patient, who is institutionalized and completely dependent, has a medical history of recurrent urinary infections and colonization by carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae. Her regular medication regimen included sertraline, valproic acid, quetiapine, risperidone, lorazepam, diazepam, haloperidol, baclofen, and fentanyl. The patient began experiencing dyspnea. Upon physical examination, she exhibited hypotension and a diminished vesicular murmur at the right base during pulmonary auscultation. Initially, after hospitalization, she developed high febrile peaks associated with hemodynamic instability, prompting the initiation of antibiotic treatment. Despite this, her fever persisted without an increase in blood inflammatory parameters, and she developed purulent sputum, necessitating antibiotherapy escalation. The seventh day of hospitalization showed no improvement in symptoms, suggesting NNMS as a differential diagnosis. All antipsychotic and sedative drugs, as well as antibiotherapy, were discontinued, after which the patient showed significant clinical improvement. CONCLUSION: Antipsychotic agents are commonly employed to manage behavioral changes linked to various disorders. However, their severe side effects necessitate a high degree of vigilance, the cessation of all medications, and the implementation of supportive care measures. A prompt and accurate diagnosis of NMS is crucial to alleviating the severe, prolonged morbidity and potential mortality associated with this syndrome. RESUMO: Nos dias atuais, métodos alternativos e que não utilizem o formaldeído para conservação de cadáveres devem ser empregados, devido à toxicidade desse agente. Modelos sintéticos são opção de treinamento para o ensino, mas geralmente o preço inviabiliza seu uso na maioria dos países subdesenvolvidos. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi desenvolver um modelo visando ao ensino e pesquisa da radiologia torácica em cadáveres de cães quimicamente preparados. Foram simulados megaesôfago, efusão pleural, pneumotórax e broncografia, além de insuflação pulmonar, em 32 cadáveres de cães, que receberam 150 mL/kg de solução de álcool etílico puro com 5% de glicerina seguido de injeção de 120 mL/kg de solução contendo 20% de cloreto de sódio, 1% de nitrito de sódio e 1% de nitrato de sódio, mantidos sob refrigeração entre 2 e 6 graus, por 30, 60, 90 ou 120 dias (G30, G60, G90, G120). Não houve contaminação, odor pútrido ou enfisema subcutâneo. A insuflação pulmonar foi mantida, e a cor e a consistência foram semelhantes a um cadáver fresco após 120 dias de conservação. Em todos os grupos foi possível realizar os procedimentos radiográficos e quase todas afecções puderam ser grandemente mimetizadas. O megaesôfago e a broncografia foram facilmente simuladas. ABSTRACT: Nowadays, alternative methods that do not use formaldehyde to preserve cadavers must be used due to this substance’s toxicity. Synthetic models are a training option for teaching, but cost makes their use unviable in most underdeveloped countries. The present study’s main objective was to develop a model for education and researching thorax radiology in cadavers of chemically prepared dogs. Megaesophagus, pleural effusion, pneumothorax, and bronchography, as well as pulmonary insufflation, were simulated in 32 dogs cadavers, which received 150 mL/kg of pure ethyl alcohol solution with 5% glycerin followed by injection of 120 mL/kg of a solution containing 20% sodium chloride, 1% sodium nitrite and 1% sodium nitrate; they were kept refrigerated between 2 to 6 °C, for 30, 60, 90 or 120 days (G30, G60, G90, G120). There was no contamination, putrid odor, or subcutaneous emphysema. The pulmonary insufflation was kept, and the color and the consistency were similar to a fresh corpse after 120 days of conservation. It was possible to perform radiographic procedures, and almost all affections could be greatly mimicked. Megaesophagus and bronchography were easily simulated. Pneumothorax was the most challenging condition to be reproduced, especially in cadavers with some liquid in the thorax. RESUMO: Protocolos que induzem à lactação artificial em vacas e novilhas são eficazes e estão comercialmente disponíveis no Brasil. No entanto, esses protocolos demandam longos tratamentos hormonais, o que é discutível visto que poucas pesquisas foram feitas sobre o assunto. Para entender melhor os protocolos de indução artificial à lactação (IAL), realizamos dois experimentos. Foi testada a hipótese de que um protocolo curto (oito dias) de IAL é tão eficiente quanto o protocolo padrão de 15 dias. No experimento 1 objetivou-se caracterizar o perfil esteroidal durante um protocolo de IAL e avaliou-se os perfis séricos de estradiol (E2) e progesterona (P4) de vacas Jersey (n=6) submetidas a um protocolo convencional. No experimento 2 foram comparadas a produção de leite e as concentrações séricas de E2 de novilhas holandesas induzidas à lactação pelo protocolo padrão de IAL (15 injeções de E2 e 8 injeções de P4) e por um protocolo curto, no qual o número de injeções de E2 e, consequentemente, a dosagem geral de E2 foram reduzidas (oito injeções de E2 e oito injeções de P4). ABSTRACT: Protocols to artificially induce cows and heifers into lactation are effective and commercially available in Brazil. However, these protocols demand long hormonal treatments, which is debatable since little research has been done in the subject. To further understand artificial induction to lactation (AIL) protocols, we conducted two experiments. In experiment 1, our objective was to better characterize steroidal profile during an AIL protocol and assess the estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4) serum profiles of Jersey cows (n=6) subjected to a conventional protocol. In experiment 2, we aimed to compare milk production and serum E2 concentrations of Holstein heifers induced into lactation by the standard AIL protocol (15 injections of E2 and 8 P4 injections) and by a short protocol in which the number of E2 injections and, consequently, the overall dosage of E2, were reduced (8 injections of E2 and 8 P4 injections). We hypothesized that a short AIL protocol (8 days) would be as efficient as the long standard protocol of 15 days.
