Abstract Introduction Most children/adolescents with disability live in low and middle-income countries and, worldwide, they are more likely to have mental health problems and achieve worse academic performance compared to those with typical development. Objective To assess whether Brazilian children/adolescents with four types of disabilities are more likely to have psychiatric disorders and educational deficits than children/adolescents with typical development. Method A multicenter cross-sectional study involving a school-based probabilistic sample of second to sixth graders (N = 1,674) from public schools in four Brazilian regions. The four types of disabilities (intellectual, visual, hearing, and motor) were assessed using the Ten Questions Questionnaire. Psychiatric disorders were measured with the Schedule for Affective Disorders/Schizophrenia for School-Age Children (K-SADS-PL), and academic performance was evaluated using the Teste de Desempenho Acadêmico – TDE (the academic performance test). Results A logistic regression model with cluster-robust errors identified the following statistically significant associations with three of the four types of disability (the exception was hearing). Intellectual disability was associated with anxiety (p < 0.01), depression (p < 0.01), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (p < 0.001), school failure (p < 0.01), and poor academic performance (p < 0.01). Visual disability was associated with depression (p < 0.01). Motor disability was marginally associated with ADHD (p = 0.08). Conclusions Presence of disabilities (intellectual, visual, and motor) in children/adolescents was associated with psychiatric disorders, school failure, and academic performance. It is therefore important to identify presence of disabilities and plan and deliver specific interventions and specialized educational care for the needs presented by these children/adolescents. This is particularly important in low and middle-income countries, where these disabilities are frequent among children/adolescents.

RESUMO Objetivo O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar o impacto da implementação do Picture Exchange Communication System – PECS na compreensão de instruções de crianças com Transtorno do Espectro do Autismo (TEA). Método Trata-se de estudo longitudinal. A amostra foi constituída por 20 crianças com TEA não verbais, sendo 15 meninos e 5 meninas, na faixa etária de 6 a 12 anos, avaliadas e diagnosticadas por equipe multidisciplinar, segundo os critérios do DSM-5. Para avaliação da compreensão de instruções foram aplicadas 8 instruções visuais e 8 instruções orais, em dois momentos do Programa de Implementação do PECS: no início das fases II e IV. O programa foi composto por 24 sessões de terapia fonoaudiológica individual com a presença do familiar e obedeceu às seis fases propostas originalmente pelo Manual de Treinamento do PECS. Resultados Houve aumento expressivo na compreensão de todas as instruções, na comparação entre os dois momentos do estudo; sendo que em seis das instruções orais (p=0,001) e cinco das instruções visuais (p=0,002), esse aumento foi estatisticamente significante. Conclusão Foi possível observar o impacto positivo do uso do PECS na compreensão de instruções tanto visuais quanto orais, mostrando que esse sistema não apenas fornece uma ferramenta de comunicação aumentativa ou alternativa para a criança se expressar, mas também promove melhora significativa na compreensão das informações contextuais.

ABSTRACT Purpose The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact of the implementation of the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) on the comprehension of instructions by children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Methods This is a longitudinal study (N° 0809/2018). The sample consisted of 20 children with nonverbal ASDs, 15 boys and 5 girls, aged 6 to 12 years, evaluated and diagnosed by a multidisciplinary team according to the DSM-5. For assessment of the comprehension of instructions, we used eight visual instructions and eight oral instructions, which were applied at two points in the PECS Implementation Program: early phases II and IV. The program consisted of 24 individual speech therapy sessions with the presence of a family member and followed the six phases originally proposed by the PECS Training Manual. Results There was an expressive increase in the comprehension of all instructions, in the comparison between the two moments of the study; and this increase was statistically significant in six of the oral instructions (p=0.001) and five of the visual ones (p=0.002). Conclusion It was possible to observe the positive impact of the use of PECS in the comprehension of both visual and oral instructions, showing that this system not only provides an augmentative or alternative communication tool for the children to express themselves but also promotes significant improvement in the understanding of contextual information.

Resumo Objetivos: Traduzir e retrotraduzir a Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) para a língua portuguesa do Brasil, verificar sua equivalência semântica transcultural e verificar indicadores de qualidade da versão final analisando a confiabilidade interavaliadores na pontuação da ADOS. Métodos: O estudo teve três etapas: 1) tradução e retrotradução; 2) análise de equivalência semântica; e 3) pré-teste para verificar a concordância entre especialistas em saúde mental e um examinador sênior em relação ao procedimento de pontuação. A realização do estudo foi feita com a autorização da Western Psychological Services, distribuidor oficial do instrumento. Resultados: Os principais resultados preliminares indicaram uma boa equivalência entre a versão original em inglês e a versão brasileira após o processo de adaptação cultural. Algumas diferenças semânticas foram encontradas entre a versão original e a retrotradução, mas que não interferiram na primeira tradução para o português nem na versão final. Uma das limitações do estudo foi o tamanho amostral pequeno; em razão disso, a confiabilidade interavaliadores entre as pontuações da ADOS dadas pelos especialistas e pelo examinador sênior utilizando o coeficiente kappa foi adequada para 7 das 10 áreas. Conclusão: Conclui-se que, com a versão brasileira da ADOS, oficializa-se uma versão única da escala em português, fortalecendo os campos clínicos e científicos de pesquisa em TEA e impedindo que no país sejam utilizadas outras versões não autorizadas da ADOS.

Abstract Objectives: To translate and back-translate the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) into Brazilian Portuguese, to assess its cross-cultural semantic equivalence, and to verify indicators of quality of the final version by analyzing the inter-rater reliability of the ADOS scores. Methods: This study had three stages: 1) translation and back-translation; 2) semantic equivalence analysis; and 3) pre-test to verify the agreement between mental health specialists and an ADOS senior examiner regarding the scoring procedure. Authorization to translate and carry out the cultural adaptation of the instrument was first obtained from the Western Psychological Services, publishers of the instrument. Results: The main preliminary results pointed to good equivalence between the original English version and the final version and the Brazilian version following the cultural adaptation process. Some semantic differences were found between the original version and the back-translation into English, but they did not interfere with the first translation into Portuguese or into the final version. One of the limitations of the study was the small sample size; for that reason, the inter-rater reliability of the ADOS scores between the specialists and the senior examiner using the kappa coefficient was adequate for 7 out of 10 areas. Conclusions: We conclude that the creation of an official Brazilian version of ADOS will help to strengthen clinical and scientific research into ASD, and deter the use of other unauthorized versions of ADOS in the country.

RESUMO Objetivo Avaliar a situação diagnóstica, o perfil sociodemográfico e de saúde dos alunos com necessidades educacionais especiais (NEE) de uma rede municipal de educação, assim como mapear o uso de serviços educacionais e sociais. Métodos A amostra foi composta por 1202 alunos com NEE de um total de 59344 alunos. Resultados Dos 1202 alunos somente 792 tinha diagnóstico estabelecido. A condição de NEE mais prevalente foi a deficiência intelectual. Verificou-se um baixo percentual (29,4%) de uso de serviços educacionais especializados ou de apoio. Foi constatado que, para alguns transtornos do neurodesenvolvimento, os dados de prevalência parecem indicar uma subnotificação. Conclusão Os resultados sugerem um descompasso entre os registros diagnósticos e a condição de necessidade educacional especial segundo a legislação brasileira, além disso verificou-se uma subnotificação diagnóstica e baixo uso de serviços especializados entre estudantes com deficiências.

ABSTRACT Objective To assess the diagnostic status, the sociodemographic and health profiles for students with special educational needs (SEN) in a public educational system, and to map their use of educational/social services. Methods The sample comprised 1,202 SEN students from a total of 59,344 students. Results Only 792 students of the 1,202 had an established diagnosis. The most prevalent SEN condition was intellectual disability. There was a low percentage (29.4%) of use of specialized educational services or support. It was found that, for some neurodevelopmental disorders, prevalence data suggest an under-reporting in the school system. Conclusion Results suggest that there is a mismatch between the diagnostic reports and the SEN condition legally recognized according to Brazilian law, in addition to the under-reporting and under specialized service use of students with disabilities.

Resumo Escalas com evidências de validade e precisão são importantes para avaliação do desenvolvimento infantil. No Brasil, há escassez de instrumentos padronizados e normatizados para a primeira infância. Este estudo investigou as propriedades psicométricas da Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, terceira edição (Bayley-III) que foi traduzida, adaptada para o português e testada com 207 crianças (12-42 meses). Evidências de validade convergente foram observadas entre a Bayley-III e: Peabody Developmental Motor Scale-2, Escala Internacional de Inteligência Leiter-R, Lista de Avaliação de Vocabulário Expressivo e Teste de Vocabulário por Imagens-Peabody. Análise fatorial exploratória indicou componente que explica 86% da variância, corroborado por bons índices de ajustes na análise fatorial confirmatória. A Bayley-III apresentou boa consistência interna com coeficientes alfa a partir de 0,90 e boa estabilidade teste-reteste apenas para a escala motora fina. Estas adequadas propriedades psicométricas podem contribuir para o avanço nas pesquisas em contexto nacional na área de avaliação do desenvolvimento infantil.

Abstract Scales with evidence of validity and reliability are important to evaluate child development. In Brazil, there is a lack of standardized instruments to evaluate young children. This study investigated the psychometric properties of the Bayley Scales of Infant Development, Third Edition (Bayley-III). It was translated into Brazilian Portuguese, culturally adapted and tested on 207 children (12-42 months of age). Evidence of convergent validity was obtained from correlations of the Bayley-III with the: Peabody Developmental Motor Scale 2, Leiter International Performance Scale-R, Expressive Vocabulary Assessment List and Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test. Exploratory factor analyses showed a single component explaining 86% of the variance, supported by goodness-of-fit indexes in confirmatory factor analysis. The Bailey-III demonstrated good internal consistency with alpha coefficients greater than or equal to .90 and stability for fine motor scale only. These robust psychometric properties support the use of this tool in future national studies on child development.

Resumen Escalas con evidencia de la validez/fiabilidad son importantes para la evaluación del desarrollo infantil. En Brasil, faltan instrumentos estandardizados/normalizados para la evaluación en la primera infancia. Este estudio investigó las propiedades psicométricas de las Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development-III, traducida y adaptada al portugués. Se evaluaron 207 niños (12-42 meses). Evidencias de validez convergente se observaron entre Bayley-III con: Escala de Desarrollo Motor de Peabody 2, Escala de Inteligencia Internacional Leiter-R, Lista de Evaluación de Vocabulario y Prueba de Vocabulario Expresivo Imágenes Peabody. El análisis factorial exploratorio indicó un componente que explica el 86% de la varianza, corroborado por buenos índices de ajuste en el análisis factorial confirmatorio. Bayley-III mostró buena consistencia interna, con coeficientes alfa de 0,90. La adecuación de las propiedades psicométricas puede contribuir al avance de la investigación en el contexto nacional en el área de evaluación del desarrollo infantil.

RESUMO: CONTEXTO E OBJETIVO: A incapacidade associada aos transtornos mentais comuns (TMCs) maternos está entre as explicações possíveis para a associação entre a desnutrição infantil crônica e os TMCs. Os TMCs podem comprometer a capacidade materna de desempenhar seu papel, especialmente em ambientes precários. O presente estudo objetivou avaliar se a incapacidade relacionada com TMCs pode fazer parte do processo de associação entre a desnutrição infantil e TMCs maternos. DESENHO E LOCALIZAÇÃO: Estudo transversal realizado em duas instituições, uma para crianças desnutridas e outra para crianças eutróficas vivendo em uma comunidade de baixa renda no estado de Alagoas, Brasil. METODOLOGIA: Casos foram 55 crianças desnutridas de 12 a 60 meses atendidas num centro de recuperação nutricional com escore z da idade para altura < 2. Controles foram 70 crianças eutróficas da mesma idade que frequentavam uma creche na mesma área do que os casos. O "Self-Report Questionnaire" permitiu identificar casos prováveis de TMCs maternos; a "Sheehan Disability Scale" possibilitou a avaliação de incapacidade associada. RESULTADOS: A desnutrição crônica infantil e a incapacidade maternal relacionada ao TMCs mostraram-se associados (OR = 2.28, IC 95% 1.02-5.1). O melhor modelo de regressão logística utilizando desnutrição crônica infantil como variável dependente incluiu um maior número de residentes na casa, ausência do pai biológico na residência e incapacidade materna relacionada ao TMCs como variáveis independentes. CONCLUSÕES: Se confirmada, a associação entre desnutrição crônica infantil e incapacidade materna relacionada a TMCs pode ser útil para ajudar a identificar a cadeia causal entre a desnutrição infantil e os TMCs maternos e indicar fatores de risco ambientais associados com a desnutrição crônica infantil.

ABSTRACT: CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: The disability associated with maternal common mental disorders (CMDs) is among the possible explanations for the association between chronic childhood malnutrition and CMDs. CMDs may impair the mother's ability to perform her role, particularly in deprived environments. The present study aimed to evaluate whether disability relating to CMDs could be part of the pathway of the association between childhood malnutrition and maternal CMDs. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional study conducted in two institutions: one for malnourished children and another for eutrophic children living in a low-income community in the state of Alagoas, Brazil. METHOD: The cases consisted of 55 malnourished children aged from 12 to 60 months who were attending a nutritional rehabilitation center, with height-for-age z-scores < 2. The controls were 70 eutrophic children of the same age who were attending a day care center in the same area as the cases. The Self-Report Questionnaire made it possible to identify likely cases of maternal CMD. The Sheehan Disability Scale enabled evaluation of the associated disability. RESULTS: Chronic childhood malnutrition was significantly associated with maternal disability relating to CMDs (OR = 2.28; 95% CI: 1.02-5.1). The best logistic regression model using chronic childhood malnutrition as the dependent variable included the following independent variables: higher number of people living in the household; absence of the biological father from the household; and maternal disability relating to CMDs. CONCLUSIONS: If confirmed, the association between chronic childhood malnutrition and maternal disability relating to CMDs may be useful in helping to identify the causal chain between childhood malnutrition and maternal CMDs and to indicate environmental risk factors associated with chronic childhood malnutrition.

RESUMOOs Transtornos do Espectro do Autismo (TEA) costumam comprometer o funcionamento adaptativo e desenvolvimento psicossocial na infância. O objetivo deste estudo foi buscar associações entre: sinais precoces dos TEA, falhas na atenção compartilhada-AC e atrasos de desenvolvimento. Participaram do estudo 92 crianças (16-24 meses) de cinco creches de Barueri-SP. Instrumentos utilizados: Development Screening Test-DENVER-II (desenvolvimento neuropsicomotor), Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers-M-CHAT (sinais precoces de TEA), Pictorial Infant Communication Scales-PICS(comunicação social). Identificou-se 28,3% de atrasos no desenvolvimento neuropsicomotor. Cinco crianças apresentaram sinais precoces dos TEA; todas falharam nas provas de AC (PICS). Nas crianças que apresentaram sinais indicativos de TEA, os déficits mais comuns foram relacionados à atenção compartilhada, área que deve ser privilegiada em avaliações precoces.

ABSTRACTThe Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) usually impair adaptive functioning and psychosocial development in childhood. The purpose of this study was to investigate associations among early signs of ASD, failures in joint attention (JA) and developmental delays. Participants were 92 children (16-24 months of age) from five day-care centers in Barueri-SP. Assessment instruments used: Development Screening Test-DENVER-II (child development); Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers-M-CHAT (screening for ASD); Pictorial Infant Communication Scales-PICS (social communication). Developmental delays were observed in 28.3% of the children. Five children showed early signs of ASD, all with deficits in joint attention. Since among children with early signs of ASD, the most common deficits were related to joint attention, this field should be privileged in early evaluations.

O estudo teve como objetivo verificar associações entre fatores de risco e proteção e problemas emocionais/ comportamentais em escolares. A amostra foi composta por 181 alunos do 2º a 5º anos (6 a 12 anos de idade) e seus respectivos cuidadores. Os instrumentos de coleta de dados foram o Inventário de Comportamentos para Crianças e Adolescentes de 6 a 18 anos, um questionário de avaliação socioeconômico familiar, de médias finais de Matermática e Português fornecidas pela escola. Foram investigados problemas emocionais/comportamentais e competências sociais com base no inventário, no desempenho acadêmico e na classificação socioeconômica familiar. Foi conduzida uma análise de regressão logística para gerar um modelo que buscasse associações entre o desfecho (problemas emocionais e comportamentais) e idade, sexo, classificação socioeconômica familiar, desempenho acadêmico e indicadores de socialização. Os resultados indicaram associações entre melhor desempenho acadêmico e indicadores positivos de socialização, com menor probabilidade de as crianças apresentarem problemas emocionais/comportamentais.

The objective of the study was to verify associations between protective and risk factors with emotional/behavioral problems in schoolchildren. The sample was comprised of 181 students from the 2 nd to 5 th grades (aged 6-12) and their caregivers. The instruments used were the Child Behavior Checklist for ages 6-18, a socioeconomic questionnaire, besides the average final grades on Mathematics and Portuguese provided by the school. We assessed emotional/behavioral problems and social competence from the Child Behavior Checklist for ages 6-18, academic performance, and family socioeconomic status. We conducted a multivariate logistic regression analysis to generate a model seeking associations between the outcome (emotional and behavioral problems) and age, gender, family socioeconomic status, academic performance and socialization indicators. Results indicated better academic performance and positive socialization indicators associated with a lower probability of emotional and behavioral problems in this sample.

Pervasive developmental disorders are now commonly referred to as autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). ASDs present with a range of severity and impairments, and often are a cause of severe disability, representing a major public health concern. The diagnostic criteria require delays or abnormal functioning in social interaction, language, and/or imaginative play within the first 3 years of life, resulting in a deviation from the developmental pattern expected for the age. Because establishing a diagnosis of ASD is possible as early as 18-24 months of age, clinicians should strive to identify and begin intervention in children with ASD as soon as signs are manifest. Increasing efforts are underway to make ASD screening universal in pediatric healthcare. Given the crucial importance of early identification and multiple modalities of treatment for ASD, this review will summarize the diagnostic criteria, key areas for assessment by clinicians, specific scales and instruments for assessment, and discussion of evidence-based treatment programs and the role of specific drug therapies for symptom management.

A violência doméstica é um dos temas mais difíceis de serem tratados pelos profissionais de saúde. Buscou-se compreender, na pesquisa realizada, a experiência dos profissionais de saúde sobre a violência doméstica contra crianças e adolescentes, descrevendo a identificação dos casos e a assistência prestada às vítimas em Unidades Básicas de Saúde. As técnicas utilizadas foram observação participante, entrevistas semi-estruturadas e grupos focais conduzidos em duas Unidades Básicas de Saúde de Embu/SP, considerada uma das regiões mais violentas do país. Dentre os resultados obtidos, os profissionais ressaltaram inúmeras dificuldades para lidar com a questão da violência, como o medo de se envolver com pessoas criminosas, a falta de resguardo nas unidades de saúde e a falta de comprometimento dos familiares. Um dos motivos da dificuldade de denúncia seria a reprodução de padrões culturais da população em que se aceita a punição física como uma prática educativa. Além disso, não se sentiam responsáveis ou capacitados para lidar com o problema. Os profissionais do Embu, de certa forma, acabam por reproduzir os mesmos valores e atitudes da comunidade em relação à violência, mantendo-se coniventes com o silêncio das famílias, evitando o comprometimento com os casos e desacreditando nas instituições responsáveis pela proteção ao menor. Ficou evidente que o problema da violência doméstica contra crianças e adolescentes não é de fácil manejo. A assistência oferecida às vítimas é restrita, principalmente pelas dificuldades dos profissionais em lidar com as características socioculturais da população atendida e pelo pouco diálogo com as instituições responsáveis pelo encaminhamento dos casos. A abordagem, o encaminhamento e o tratamento de crianças e adolescentes vítimas de violência física podem adquirir maior eficácia quando se estabelece essa aproximação dos serviços de saúde com o cotidiano vivido pela população.

Domestic violence is one of the most difficult topics to be dealt with by health professionals. We aimed, in this research, to understand the experience of health professionals concerning domestic violence against children and teenagers, describing the identification of the cases and the aid offered to the victims in the Unidades Básicas de Saúde (UBS - Primary Health Care Units). The techniques were participant observation, focus groups and semi-structured interviews conducted at two UBSs in the city of Embu, one of the most violent regions of Brazil, located in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo. According to the results, the professionals said they have several difficulties in tackling the question of violence, such as fear of getting involved with criminal people, lack of protection in the UBSs and the relatives' lack of commitment. The fear of assuming legal obligations makes it difficult for the professionals to have attitudes in order to assist the victims. One of the reasons for their denunciation difficulty would be the reproduction of cultural standards in which physical punishment is accepted as an educational practice. Besides, they seem not to feel responsible or qualified to deal with the problem. The professionals of Embu, in a certain way, reproduce the same values and attitudes of the community in relation to violence, conniving at the silence of the families, avoiding commitment to the cases and not believing in the institutions that are responsible for children's protection. It was clear that the problem of domestic violence against children and teenagers is not easy to deal with. The assistance offered to the victims is restricted, mainly due to the professionals' difficulties in handling the social-cultural characteristics of the population and to the lack of dialogue with the institutions that are responsible for referring the cases. The approach, referral and treatment of children and teenagers who are victims of physical violence can be more effective when the health services are in close contact with the daily life of the population.

The assistance offered to the victims is restricted, mainly due to the professionals' difficulties in handling the social-cultural characteristics of the population and to the lack of dialogue with the institutions that are responsible for referring the cases. The approach, referral and treatment of children and teenagers who are victims of physical violence can be more effective when the health services are in close contact with the daily life of the population.

OBJETIVOS: Estimar a prevalência de violência conjugal física contra a mulher ao longo da vida (VCFM) em uma comunidade urbana de baixa renda e avaliar o seu impacto imediato na saúde, trabalho e vida familiar. MÉTODOS: O presente estudo de corte transversal foi realizado em Embu, Estado de São Paulo, como componente do projeto multicêntrico internacional World Studies of Abuse in the Family Environment (WorldSAFE). Foi utilizada uma amostra probabilística de conglomerados derivados de setores censitários, incluindo todos os domicílios elegíveis identificados em cada um deles. Participaram 784 mulheres (16 a 49 anos) com pelo menos um filho menor de 18 anos e marido/companheiro residente (ao longo da vida). Foi avaliada a ocorrência de algum tipo de VCFM (tapa, chute, soco, espancamento, uso/ameaça de uso de arma, outras agressões físicas espontaneamente referidas), de VCFM grave (mesmos itens, exceto tapa e outras agressões referidas) e de impactos imediatos na saúde, trabalho e vida familiar das vítimas. RESULTADOS: A prevalência de VCFM foi de 26,0% para algum tipo de violência e de 18,5% para violência grave. Entre as vítimas de algum tipo de VFCM, 38,7% julgaram necessitar cuidados médicos, 4,4% foram hospitalizadas, 18,1% ficaram incapacitadas para o trabalho (remunerado ou doméstico), 51,5% separaram-se devido às agressões e 66,7% tiveram filhos testemunhando a violência. Para a violência grave, essas taxas foram de 51,0, 5,5, 23,4, 59,3 e 75,9%, respectivamente. A vergonha e o medo de represália por parte do companheiro dificultaram o acesso à assistência médica. CONCLUSÕES: A VCFM é frequente na comunidade estudada e produz impactos imediatos na saúde, trabalho e vida familiar das vítimas. Esses impactos diminuem a capacidade da vítima de buscar socorro e dificultam a interrupção do ciclo da violência.

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the lifetime prevalence of domestic violence against women (DVAW) in a low-income urban community and evaluate the immediate impact of DVAW on health, work, and family life. METHODS: The present cross-sectional study was carried out in the city of Embu (state of São Paulo, Brazil) as part of an international multicenter project (World Studies of Abuse in the Family Environment, WorldSAFE). A probabilistic sample of census sector-based clusters including all eligible households identified was used. A total of 784 women (age 16-49 years) with at least one child younger than 18 years and a lifetime resident husband/partner were included. We evaluated the occurrence of any kind of DVAW (slapping, kicking, hitting, beating, threatening to use or using a weapon, other aggressions mentioned spontaneously), of severe DVAW (same items, except slapping and other aggressions informed spontaneously), and of immediate impacts on the health, work, and family of the victims. RESULTS: The prevalence of DVAW was 26.0% for any kind of violence and 18.5% for severe DVAW. Among the victims of any kind of DVAW, 38.7% judged that they needed medical care, 4.4% were hospitalized, 18.1% were incapacitated for work (paid work or household chores), 51.5% left their partner due to the aggression and 66.7% had children who witnessed the violence. For severe violence, these rates were 51.0, 5.5, 23.4, 59.3 and 75.9%, respectively. Shame and fear of retaliation obstructed access to medical care. CONCLUSIONS: The frequency of DVAW is high in the studied community and produces immediate impacts on the victim's health, work, and family life. These impacts decrease the victim's ability to look for help and hinder the breaking of the cycle of violence.

OBJETIVOS: O presente estudo refere-se a uma revisão sistemática, cujo objetivo foi conduzir uma análise da produção científica de autores brasileiros sobre Transtornos do espectro autista (TEA), no período de 2002 a 2009. MÉTODOS: A busca bibliográfica foi realizada nas bases de dados: PUBMED, SciELO, LILACS e portal CAPES, incluindo diversos descritores, tais como autismo e transtorno invasivo do desenvolvimento. RESULTADOS: Um total de 93 artigos foi identificado, tendo sido publicados, sobretudo por autores da região Sudeste e de universidades públicas. Aproximadamente um terço dos artigos foi publicado em revistas com algum fator de impacto variando entre 0,441 e 3,211; sendo a maioria dos artigos baseada em amostras pequenas. Foram identificadas 140 dissertações e teses; 82,1% eram dissertações de mestrado. O principal tema de pesquisa abordado neste material relacionou-se a programas de intervenção para TEA. CONCLUSÃO: Esta revisão mostra o interesse de pesquisadores brasileiros na temática dos TEA, entretanto, uma parte considerável dessa produção científica se concentra em dissertações/teses e a minoria em artigos científicos publicados em revistas com elevado fator de impacto. Os resultados desta revisão sistemática mostram a necessidade de novos estudos com amostras maiores que levariam a um maior impacto e visibilidade da produção científica brasileira relativa aos TEA.

OBJECTIVE: This study is a systematic review aiming to conduct a general analysis of the scientific production covering publications of Brazilian authors about ASD in the period from 2002 to 2009. METHODS: The bibliographic search was conducted in the following scientific databases: PUBMED, SciELO, LILACS and portal CAPES, by using keywords such as autism and pervasive developmental disorders. RESULTS: A total of 93 papers were identified mainly produced by authors from tSoutheast Brazil and from public universities. Approximately one third of the papers was published in journals with a level of impact factor that ranged from 0.441 to 3.211; most of them were based on small sample sizes. Identified were 140 dissertations/theses; 82.1% were masters theses. The major research topic was related to intervention programs addressing ASD. CONCLUSION: This review shows that Brazilian researchers are interested in the ASD theme, however, a large part of this scientific production is concentrated in dissertation/masters theses and the minority of papers was published in journals with a high impact factor. Results of this systematic review suggest the need for studies with larger sample sizes which would produce greater impact and visibility in the Brazilian scientific production in the field of the ASD.
