The aim of this study was to preliminary evaluate the lipid profile alterations on Pitcairnia flammea leaves based on variations in solvent proportion and ultrasonic ice bath extraction time, followed by a lipid class-enriched analysis employing chemometric techniques. Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled to electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (UHPLC-ESI-MS) was used to acquire raw data and MS-DIAL and MetaboAnalyst platforms were used to perform data preprocessing and statistical analysis. The statistical analysis of UHPLC-ESI-MS data in both ionization modes enabled the visualization of a trend distribution based on extraction time. Furthermore, we were able to establish that the solvent proportion had a greater impact on group separation in data samples extracted for 30 min versus 10 and 20 min. Resumo Objetivo A urbanização leva a mudanças rápidas na estrutura e função do ecossistema. Terras úmidas em câmpus universitários sujeitos ao desenvolvimento da urbanização podem ser usados como estudos de caso de pesquisa aquática multidisciplinar e boas práticas ambientais que promovam a sustentabilidade. Métodos Foi realizado um estudo paleolimnológico em um lago semiartificial em um campus universitário no sul do Brasil para inferir impactos históricos e mudanças ecológicas desde a década de 1970 por meio de abordagens complementares: dados históricos, nutrientes, isótopos estáveis δ13C e δ15N, diatomáceas, microplásticos e análise da comunidade microbiana associada. Resultados O processo de eutrofização começou a se intensificar após o uso noturno por aves aquáticas de árvores como poleiros, e especialmente após o estabelecimento de construções ao longo das margens com fossa séptica de esgoto sanitário, que ocasionalmente transbordava e carreava material para o lago. Ao longo de décadas, identificamos um processo limnológico de hipertrofização que induziu a florações recorrentes de cianobactérias e proliferação maciça de macrófitas, juntamente com mudanças isotópicas e ocupação de algas com várias transições entre estados alternativos de lagos rasos. Tal processo limnológico foi claramente espelhado nas tendências de eutrofização paleolimnológica e mudanças isotópicas da matéria orgânica sedimentar. A deposição de microplásticos foi detectada como proxy para a intensificação da urbanização especialmente durante a construção das instalações da Universidade. Conclusões O uso combinado de dados paleolimnológicos e limnológicos históricos representa uma abordagem poderosa para identificar os impactos naturais e culturais no lago e identificar estratégias de manejo baseadas em tais informações científicas.

Abstract Aim Urbanization leads to rapid changes in ecosystem structure and function. Wetlands on university campuses under urbanization pressure could be used as case studies of multidisciplinary aquatic research and good environmental practices promoting sustainability. Methods A paleolimnological study was undertaken in a semi-artificial lake on a university campus in southern Brazil to trace historical impacts and ecological changes back to the mid-1970s through complementary approaches: historical data, nutrients, δ13C and δ15N stable isotopes, diatoms, microplastics and associated microbial community analysis. Results The eutrophication process started to intensify after the lake was used for nocturnal roosting by waterbirds, and especially after the establishment of constructions along the margins with septic tank sanitary sewage, which eventually spilled and leached into the lake. Over decades, we identified a limnological hypertrophication process leading to recurrent cyanobacterial blooms and massive macrophyte proliferation coupled with changes in isotopic ratios and algal occupation with several transitions between shallow lake alternative states. Such a limnological process has resembled the paleolimnological eutrophication trends and isotopic changes in sedimentary organic matter. The microplastic deposition was detected as a proxy for the intensification of urbanization, especially during the construction of the University facilities. Conclusions The combined use of paleolimnological and historical limnological data represents a powerful approach for inferring both natural and cultural impacts on the lake, and identifying management strategies based on such scientific information.

Abstract We evaluated the worldwide trends in studies of the active and dormant forms of microcrustaceans in rice fields, and the potential of this environment as a stock of diversity through a scientometric analysis. Web of Science and Scopus databases were used to compile the 77 studies published before 2019. Publications were distributed over 35 years, with a positive correlation between the number of studies and the year of publication (rho = 0.34). The identified studies were from 18 countries, and 58.4% were conducted in Japan, Italy, the United States, and Spain. Most studies addressed more than two groups of microcrustaceans (37.6%), followed by those focused on Cladocera (27.2%) and Ostracoda (18.1%). We quantified 301 species from six groups of microcrustaceans, the majority of which were Cladocera (41.5%) and Ostracoda (39.8%). The greatest richness of microcrustaceans identified in studies were found in Italy, Thailand, Malaysia, Spain, France, Japan, and Brazil. Of the studies, 87% were centered on the active forms of microcrustaceans rather than dormant forms. We found that 15.5% of the countries that grow rice have identified the richness of microcrustaceans, and even though they are artificial environments, rice fields have high potential to store a high diversity of microcrustaceans.

The aim of this study was to determine if the rate of degradation and the habitat type associated with two submersed macrophytes affect the structure of the invertebrate communities in a shallow subtropical lake. We evaluated debris decomposition rate with a litter bags approach, assigned to four treatments: Potamogeton pectinatus decomposing inside their own stand (PP) and inside a Chara zeylanica stand (PC), and C. zeylanica decomposing inside their own stand (CC) and inside a P. pectinatus stand (CP). During the degradation experiment (20 days), we evaluated the fauna associated both with debris and at live macrophytes. The debris were washed, dried and the coefficient of degradation was determined. We estimated the richness and abundance of taxa of associated invertebrates, and they were classified into functional feeding groups. We evaluated preference of invertebrate communities comparing fauna at live macrophytes and their debris. We observed differences in mass loss between the treatments. Chara zeylanica showed a mass loss four times faster than P. pectinatus. The highest invertebrate abundance occurred in treatment PP and highest invertebrate richness in treatments CC and PP. Collectors and predators showed the highest abundances. The PP treatment had the greatest number of collectors and PC an equitable distribution of all functional groups. Five taxa showed preference for P. pectinatus debris instead of C. zeylanica or P. pectinatus alive, and debris of charophyte was preferred by six taxa instead of alive plant, and by two taxa when the debris were incubated in the stand of P. pectinatus. Our study demonstrated the interference of the incubation site on the decomposition coefficient and on the structuring of the invertebrate communities, and that the abundance of invertebrate at detritus is mainly due to abundance at live plants. Also, the absence of shredders suggests the use of debris mainly as shelter instead of food resource.

El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar si el tiempo de degradación y el hábitat provisto por dos macrófitas sumergidas afectan la estructura de la comunidad de invertebrados en un lago somero subtropical. Se evaluó la descomposición de detrito en 60 bolsas. Los detritos fueron asignados al azar a cuatro tratamientos: Potamogeton pectinatus en descomposición dentro de su propio stand (PP) y en el interior de un stand de Chara zeylanica (PC), y C. zeylanica dentro de su propio stand (CC) y en el interior de un stand de P. pectinatus (CP). Durante el experimento de degradación (20 días) se evaluó la fauna asociada tanto a los detritos como a las macrófitas vivas. Las bolsas de detrito se lavaron, se secaron y luego se determinó el coeficiente de degradación. Estimamos la riqueza y la abundancia de los taxa de invertebrados asociados y evaluamos la preferencia de las comunidades de invertebrados comparando la fauna de las macrófitas vivas y de sus detritos. Los invertebrados asociados se clasificaron en grupos funcionales de alimentación. Chara zeylanica mostró una pérdida de peso cuatro veces más rápida que P. pectinatus. La mayor abundancia de invertebrados se produjo en el tratamiento PP y la mayor riqueza de invertebrados en los tratamientos de CC y PP. Los colectores y depredadores presentaron las mayores abundancias. El tratamiento PP tuvo el mayor número de colectores y PC una distribución más equitativa de los grupos funcionales. Cinco taxones mostraron preferencia por detritos de P. pectinatus en lugar de C. zeylanica o P. pectinatus vivos, y los detritos de la carófita fueron preferidos por seis taxones dentro de las plantas vivas, y por dos taxones cuando se incubaron en el interior del stand de P. pectinatus. Nuestro estudio demostró el efecto del sitio de incubación en el coeficiente de descomposición y en la estructura de las comunidades de invertebrados, y reveló que la abundancia de invertebrados en detritus se debe principalmente a su abundancia en las plantas vivas. Además, la ausencia de trituradores sugiere el uso de detritos principalmente como refugio en lugar de como recurso alimentario.

RESUMO O canal São Gonçalo liga as lagoas dos Patos e Mirim, no sul do Brasil, possuindo um comprimento de cerca de 70 Km. É importante manancial agrícola para a cultura do arroz irrigado, e urbano, para o município de Rio Grande, com cerca de 250 mil habitantes. Este trabalho visou obter um diagnóstico da qualidade das águas deste manancial, utilizando métricas da comunidade de invertebrados bentônicos (índice de Shannon-Wiener, abundância e riqueza de táxons), e o índice biótico BMWP, avaliação de características físicas e químicas, e aplicação do índice de estado trófico. O índice BMWP geral para o período indicou águas contaminadas ou poluídas, com maiores valores de riqueza e densidade de grupos indicadores de condições alteradas (Sarcodina e Hydracarina). As variáveis analisadas indicam águas eutrofizadas, com valores de clorofila-a característicos de ambientes eutróficos (> 2,9 µg. L-1), baixas taxas N:P tanto na água como no sedimento, indicando limitação por nitrogênio na maioria dos períodos. Estes valores são corroborados pelos escores de índices de estado trófico, que em sua maioria indicaram condições de mesotrofia e eutrofia, atingindo períodos de hipertrofia. Os valores de IET mais elevados ocorreram a jusante do rio Piratini, nas coletas de abril/2009 e fevereiro/2011, atingindo valores de super e hipereutrófico, respectivamente, em períodos coincidentes com drenagem das culturas de arroz irrigado no entorno. Os resultados encontrados relativos às concentrações de nutrientes, estequiometria de nitrogênio e fósforo e índice biótico reforçam a necessidade de avaliações de usos do entorno deste manancial.

ABSTRACT São Gonçalo channel connects Patos and Mirim lagoons, in South Brazil. This ecosystem is 70 Km long, and is a major regional source of urban and agricultural water supply, mainly for the municipality of Rio Grande, with ca. 250 thousand citizens. This study aims to diagnose their water quality by measuring benthic invertebrates (Shannon-Wiener diversity index, richness and abundance), use of a BMWP biotic index, physical and chemical evaluation, and applying a trophic state index. The BMWP index showed predominance of taxa indicating altered conditions and polluted waters (Sarcodina and Hydracarina). The abiotic variables indicated eutrophicated waters, chlorophyll values characteristic of eutrophic environments (>2.9 µg. L–1), low N:P rates in sediment and water, with nitrogen limitation during most periods studied. The results of trophic state indexes indicated mesotrophic and eutrophic conditions, reaching hipereutrophic periods. The highest TSI were in Piratini river, in April 2009 and February 2011, coinciding with rice crop leaching. These results regarding nutrient concentration, nitrogen and phosphorus stoichiometry and biotic index support the need to evaluate the occupation of the surroundings of this water supply.

O material alóctone da mata ripária é fonte importante para a cadeia alimentar detritívora em riachos florestados. Este estudo teve como objetivos i) estimar a perda de massa foliar de Salix humboldtiana Willd., ii) analisar as alterações na composição química dos detritos durante o período de perda de massa, e iii) avaliar a assembleia de invertebrados colonizadoresem um córrego arenoso na planície costeira sul do Rio Grande do Sul (Brasil), com a hipótese de que os detritos de S. humboldtiana constituem habitat favorável a colonização por invertebrados, e que estes contribuem para sua degradação. Foram incubadas 28 bolsas de folhiço na superfície do sedimento do córrego, com retiradas em sete datas amostrais. Mudanças na composição química e a abundância, riqueza e grupos trófi cos funcionais de invertebrados durante a perda de peso foram analisadas. Aos 184 dias foi registrada a perda de 70% da biomassa dos detritos (k=0.0066 dia-1). Foram registrados 14197 organismos, distribuídos em 36 táxons. Oligochaeta (43.6%), Hydrobiidae (16.6%), Chironominae (11.3%) e Hydracarina (6.6%) foram os mais representativos. O desenvolvimento do biofi lme, observado por meio do incremento das concentrações de nitrogênio e fósforo totais nos detritos, pode ter favorecido a colonização por raspadores na fase fi nal do experimento. A hipótese inicial foi corroborada em parte, pois considerando a baixa abundância de potenciais fragmentadores, a contribuição da comunidade de invertebrados para a degradação dos detritos é reduzida, sendo os coletores - catadores o grupo trófi co funcional mais abundante da assembleia.

Aquatic invertebrates associated with Salix humboldtiana litter in a subtropical stream: Allochthonous material from riparian forest is an important source for detritivore food chain in streams. This study aimed to: i) estimate the leaf mass loss of Salix humboldtiana Willd., ii) analyze the changes in the detritus chemical composition during mass loss, and iii) analyze the invertebrate colonizers assemblage of a sandy stream in south coastal plain of the Rio Grande do Sul state (Brazil). We hypothesized that S. humboldtiana debris constitute favorable habitat for colonization by invertebrates, which in turn contribute to debris degradation. Twenty eight bags were incubated on the sediment surface of the stream in seven sampling dates. During the decomposition process we analyzed changes of detritus chemical composition and the abundance, richness and functional trophic groups of invertebrates. After 184 days we recorded an average loss of 70% of debris (k=0.0066 day-1) and counted a total of 14197 invertebrate individuals, distributed in 36 taxa. Oligochaeta (43.6%), Hydrobiidae (16.6%), Chironominae (11.3%) and Hydracarina (6.6%) were the most representative. The biofi lm development, observed through increased concentrations of total phosphorus and nitrogen in the debris, may have favored colonization by scrapers at the end of the decomposition period. The initial hypothesis was partially corroborated as the abundance of potential shredders was low, the contribution of invertebrates assemblage to litter decomposition was low, and the gathering-collectors were the most abundant group.

OBJETIVO: O principal objetivo foi descrever as mudanças nas características de um lago raso subtropical em períodos com e sem crescimento de macrófitas, relacionando com estado de águas claras-dominância de macrófitas, e águas túrbidas, com dominância de fitoplâncton. MÉTODOS: O estudo foi realizado no lago dos Biguás, planície costeira sul do Brasil (32° 04' 43"' S e 52° 10' 03" W). Foram feitas amostras mensais de Outubro de 2000 a Novembro de 2013. As variáveis limnológicas medidas na coluna d'água foram oxigênio dissolvido, temperatura, pH, condutividade elétrica, clorofila-a, nitrogênio total, fósforo total e material em suspensão. Os dados foram agrupados em períodos com dominância de macrófitas (MD) e dominância de fitoplâncton (PD), e foram comparados por teste-t as concentrações de nutrientes, clorofila-a e material em suspensão entre os períodos. Durante o crescimento de macrófitas foram estimadas a cobertura (%) e variação de biomassa. RESULTADOS: Durante os 13 anos avaliados, o lago mostrou-se bem oxigenado, alcalino, e a temperatura variou conforme a sazonalidade subtropical. Os menores valores das variáveis analisadas foram verificados nos períodos com dominância de macrófitas, caracterizando os períodos de águas claras e túrbidas. CONCLUSÕES: Foi verificada a influência das macrófitas aquáticas sobre a qualidade de água neste lago raso durante o período estudado, através da redução da concentração de nutrientes, clorofila-a e material em suspensão, favorecendo a manutenção de águas claras.

AIM: The main objective of this work is to describe the changes in water characteristics of a shallow subtropical lake, in periods with and without growing of macrophytes, related to periods of clear-macrophyte dominance and turbid-phytoplankton dominance states. METHODS: The study was conducted in Biguás Lake, in the south coastal plain of Brazil (32° 04' 43" S and 52° 10' 03" W). Samplings were carried out monthly between October 2000 and November 2013. The limnological variables measured in the water column were dissolved oxygen (DO), water temperature, pH, electrical conductivity (EC), chlorophyll-a, total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorous (TP) and suspended material (SM). Data were grouped according to periods with macrophyte growth dominance (MD) and without macrophytes, with phytoplankton dominance (PD), and applied t- tests among TP, TN, Chlorophyll-a and SM. During macrophyte growth we estimated the coverage (%) and biomass variation of plants. RESULTS: Over the 13 years, the lake was well oxygenated, alkaline, and with a temperature variation according to subtropical seasonality. The lower values of all of the limnological variables were verified during periods of macrophyte growth, characterizing periods of clear and turbid waters. CONCLUSIONS: The influence of aquatic macrophytes in improving water quality in this shallow lake during the studied period, reducing nutrient concentrations, chlorophyll-a and suspended material in water, favoring the maintenance of a clear water state, was verified.

No seu entorno, a lagoa Caiubá apresenta regiões preservadas e áreas com cultura de arroz e de pecuária. Esta pesquisa descreve o padrão de variação sazonal e espacial das variáveis fisico-químicas e biológicas durante os anos de 2009 e 2010, em nove pontos distribuídos espacialmente na lagoa, representando suas partes norte, central e sul. A qualidade da água foi avaliada através da aplicação do índice de estado trófico (IET), do índice de qualidade de água (IQA) e das classes da Resolução CONAMA 357/2005. Foram coletadas amostras de invertebrados bentônicos e determinados os Índices Bióticos (IB) de acordo com os modelos da Environmental Protection Agency (EPA-USA) e a adaptação do Biological Monitoring Working Party (BMWP). Os resultados evidenciaram um sistema com alta turbidez e conteúdo de fósforo, além de baixa razão N:P, e com poucas alterações sazonais e espaciais nas variáveis medidas. Embora os resultados do IQA e CONAMA tenham classificado a lagoa Caiubá como águas de excelente a boa qualidade, os resultados do IET e dos IB foram opostos classificando a lagoa como sistema alterado e poluído. Conclui-se que esses índices devam ser readequados através de avaliações sistemáticas visando refletir as condições de qualidade de ecossistemas aquáticos em meio rural, na região subtropical do Brasil.

The Caiubá lagoon has its surroundings with preserved areas and areas with rice cultivation and livestock. This study describes the pattern of seasonal and spatial variation of physico-chemical and biological variables during the years 2009 and 2010 at nine points, representing part of northern, central and southern regions. Water quality was evaluated by applying the trophic state index (TSI) and the water quality index (WQI), and classes according to CONAMA Resolution 357/2005. Samples of benthic invertebrates were collected and determined the biotic index (BI), following the models of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA-USA), and adaptation of Biological Monitoring Working Party (BMWP). The results demonstrated a system with high turbidity and phosphorus content, and low N:P ratio, and with little seasonal and spatial changes in the measured variables. Although the results of WQI and the CONAMA have classified the lagoon waters with excellent to good quality, the results of the TSI and the BI were opposites, classifying the ecosystem as amended and polluted system. It is concluded that these indices should be readjusted through systematic evaluations in order to reflect the quality condition of aquatic ecosystems in rural areas in the subtropical region of Brazil.

OBJETIVOS: Este estudo caracterizou a qualidade da água nos trechos lóticos do rio das Antas influenciados pela construção da usina hidrelétrica Monte Claro, com reservatório tipo fio d'água. MÉTODO: Foram selecionados quatro pontos do programa de monitoramento da qualidade da água executado pela CERAN - Companhia Energética rio das Antas, nos períodos pré-enchimento (2002-2004) e pós-enchimento (2005 a 2008). Foi monitorada a vazão do rio pré e pós-enchimento do reservatório. As amostragens foram sazonais, e utilizadas as variáveis alcalinidade, clorofila a, coliformes totais e fecais, condutividade, cor, DBO, DQO, fósforo total, nitrato, nitrito, nitrogênio amoniacal, oxigênio dissolvido, pH, sólidos dissolvidos totais, sólidos suspensos, sulfatos, temperatura e turbidez. Estes resultados foram interpretados de acordo com a Resolução CONAMA 357/05, o Índice de Qualidade da Água e Índice de Estado Trófico. Foi utilizado o teste-t para verificar a ocorrência de alterações em um mesmo ponto antes e depois da entrada em operação da usina. RESULTADOS: Não foram observadas mudanças significativas na qualidade da água depois do barramento. A permanência das características hidrográficas naturais foi importante na manutenção da qualidade da água. A diminuição da qualidade da água em trecho da alça de vazão reduzida foi provocada pela arroio Burati que desemboca no trecho e apresenta grande contribuição de nutrientes e coliformes fecais. CONCLUSÕES: A usina hidroelétrica Monte Claro não alterou a qualidade de água do rio das Antas. O reservatório de dimensões pequenas formado pelo projeto favorece a manutenção da qualidade de água do rio e não favorece a eutrofização. Deve ser dada atenção ao arroio Burati, tributário do rio das Antas, por sua alta concentração de nutrientes e de coliformes.

AIM: This study characterized the water quality of the lotic areas of the Rio das Antas (Antas River)influenced by the construction of the Monte Claro hydroelectric plant (South Brazil), a run-of-the-river reservoir. METHODS: To assess the water quality, we selected four sampling points based on the results obtained in the water-quality monitoring program performed by CERAN (the Rio das Antas Energetic Company) in the pre-filling (2002-2004) and post-filling (2005-2008) periods. The river flow was monitored during both of the periods. Seasonal samplings were conducted, and alkalinity, chlorophyll a, total and fecal coliforms, conductivity, color, BOD, COD, total phosphorus, nitrate, nitrite, ammoniacal nitrogen, dissolved oxygen, pH, total dissolved solids, suspended solids, sulfates, temperature and turbidity were evaluated. The results were interpreted according to the Brazilian Environmental Council's Water Quality Index, Trophic State Index and CONAMA Resolution 357/05. To verify the occurrence of alterations before and after the plant operation, t-tests were performed. RESULTS: Significant changes in water quality were not observed after the impoundment. The permanence of the characteristics of the natural hydrography was important for maintaining the water quality. The decline of the water quality in a stretch with reduced flow was caused by Burati stream, a tributary containing high concentrations of nutrients and fecal coliforms. CONCLUSIONS:The Monte Claro hydroelectric plant did not alter the water quality of the Antas River. The small reservoir resulting from the plant project favors the maintenance of the water quality of the river and does not favor eutrophication. Attention should be given to Burati stream, a tributary of the Antas River, regarding its high nutrient and coliform content.

OBJETIVO: Foi avaliado o potencial bioindicador da comunidade de macrófitas aquáticas em seis pequenos lagos rasos. MÉTODOS: O acompanhamento foi mensal durante um ano, sendo que em cada coleta, além do registro de todas as espécies de macrófitas foram determinadas a temperatura da água, oxigênio dissolvido, pH, condutividade elétrica, alcalinidade total, clorofila-a, material em suspensão, nitrogênio total (Nt) e fósforo total (Pt). RESULTADOS: No total, quarenta e três espécies foram registradas, e ocorreram diferenças significativas na riqueza de espécies e nas condições limnológicas entre os lagos estudados. A análise de correspondência canônica mostrou que a concentração de nutrientes (Nt e Pt), clorofila-a, material em suspensão, oxigênio dissolvido e pH foram os mais importantes preditores da distribuição das macrófitas aquáticas. Algumas espécies emergentes estiveram relacionadas alta concentração de nutrientes, de clorofila-a, e de material em suspensão. Por outro lado, a maioria das espécies submersas foram associadas a ambientes com baixa concentração de nutrientes e os menores valores de clorofila-a, e de material em suspensão. Além disso, algumas espécies submersas e flutuantes foram relacionadas a baixos valores de pH, alcalinidade e oxigênio dissolvido. As diferenças limnológicas entre os lagos podem ser apontadas como as principais causas da distribuição heterogênea observada das macrófitas. CONCLUSÕES: Estes resultados indicam a importância das características limnológicas dos diferentes ambientes na composição da comunidade de macrófitas aquáticas e o potencial papel bioindicador dessa comunidade em lagos rasos do sul do Brasil.

AIMS: We evaluated the potential of aquatic macrophyte communities as bioindicators in six small shallow lakes. METHODS: The sampling was conducted monthly for one year, during which all macrophytes were surveyed, and the water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity, total alkalinity, chlorophyll-a, suspended matter, total nitrogen (Nt) and total phosphorus (Pt) were measured. RESULTS: In total, forty-three species were recorded, and there were significant differences in the species richness and limnological conditions among the lakes studied. A canonical correspondence analysis showed that the concentration of nutrients (Nt and Pt), chlorophyll-a, suspended matter, dissolved oxygen and pH were the most important predictors of the distribution of macrophytes. Some emergents were related to the high concentration of nutrients, chlorophyll-a, and suspended matter. Moreover, the most submersed species were associated with environments with low nutrient concentrations and the lowest values chlorophyll-a and suspended matter. In addition, some species submerged and floating were related to low values pH, alkalinity and dissolved oxygen. Limnological differences between lakes may be cited as the main causes of the observed heterogeneous distribution of macrophytes. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate the importance of limnological characteristics of the different environments in the macrophyte community composition and the potential role of this community as a bioindicator in shallow lakes in southern Brazil.

OBJETIVO: Este estudo determinou a variação temporal da biomassa e as concentrações de carbono, nitrogênio e fósforo de Azolla filiculoides Lam., em um pequeno lago raso distrófico situado no município do Rio Grande (Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil). MÉTODO: As amostragens foram realizadas mensalmente no período entre novembro de 2000 e outubro de 2001. As macrófitas foram coletadas aleatoriamente em três repetições, utilizando-se coletor circular de 0,3 m de diâmetro e posteriormente lavadas com água corrente e secas em estufa 60 ºC para determinação do peso seco e dos nutrientes: carbono, nitrogênio e fósforo. A produção primária foi estimada pela variação de biomassa entre coletas sucessivas. RESULTADOS: A. filiculoides esteve presente no lago durante todo o ano, ocupando sempre entre 50 e 80% da superfície do lago. Os valores de biomassa variaram entre 34,2 g PS.m-2, registrado em maio (outono) e 170,9 g PS.m-2 em janeiro (verão). A maior taxa de produtividade primária foi 3,3 g PS.m-2.d-1 foi registrada em Junho. As concentrações de carbono, nitrogênio e fósforo na planta variaram entre: 403 e 551 g. kg-1, 13,4 e 25,7 g.kg-1 e 0,5 e 1,9 g.kg-1, respectivamente. Os valores da relação N:P na coluna de água variou entre 19:1 e 368:1. CONCLUSÃO: A cobertura da superfície do lago por A. filiculoides durante todo o período do estudo e o seu estado nutricional demonstram sua importância na ciclagem dos nutrientes neste ambiente aquático. A maior relação N:P na coluna de água quando comparada a outro ambiente próximo sem a presença desta macrófita, apoia a ideia de que A. filiculoides pode ser a responsável pelo enriquecimento do lago por meio da atividade de fixação biológica de nitrogênio.

AIM: This study determined the temporal variation of the biomass and the concentrations of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus in Azolla filiculoides Lam. in a small (0.5 ha) shallow dystrophic lake located in the city of Rio Grande (Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil). METHOD: Sampling was conducted monthly between November 2000 and October 2001. The macrophytes were collected randomly in three replicates with a circular collector 0.3 m in diameter and subsequently washed with tap water and oven-dried at 60 ºC for determination of the dry weight and the nutrient status (i.e., carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus). Primary productivity was estimated by the variation in biomass among successive samples. RESULTS: A. filiculoides was present in the lake throughout the year and occupied between 50 and 80% of the surface area. The biomass values ranged from 34.2 g DW.m-2, recorded in May (autumn), to 170.9 g DW.m-2 in January (summer). The highest rate of primary productivity was 3.3 g DW.m-2.d-1, observed in June. The concentrations of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus in the plant ranged between 403 and 551 g.kg-1, 13.4 and 25.7 g.kg-1 and 0.5 and 1.9 g.kg-1, respectively. The water N:P ratio ranged between 19:1 and 368:1. CONCLUSION: The coverage of the surface of the lake by A. filiculoides throughout the study period and the nutritional status of the plant demonstrate the importance of the cycling of nutrients by macrophytes in this aquatic environment. The higher N:P ratio in the water column, compared with other neighboring environments without macrophytes, shows that the enrichment of the lake may result from the biological N-fixation activity produced by A. filiculoides.

OBJETIVOS: Avaliar a degradação foliar de Salix humboldtiana Willd. e a colonização pela comunidade de invertebrados aquáticos em um lago raso subtropical, planície costeira do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil; MÉTODOS: Bolsas de decomposição contendo 6,85 g de folhas foram incubadas na região litorânea, na superfície do sedimento, e retiradas após 1, 4, 7, 14, 32, 47 e 71 dias de decomposição; RESULTADOS: Aos 71 dias foi registrada a degradação de 51% do peso inicial (k = 0,0100 d-1). O tempo estimado para a degradação de 95% do peso inicial dos detritos foi 300 dias. Foram identificados 16.040 organismos, distribuídos em 35 táxons. Caenidae (25,9%), Oligochaeta (19%), Ostracoda (13,8%), Hydracarina (9,8%), Tanypodinae (9,7%) e Coenagrionidae (7,7%) foram os táxons mais representativos. Foi observado incremento na riqueza, densidade e diversidade dos táxons ao longo do tempo, com tendência à estabilização dos valores de diversidade. Em relação aos grupos tróficos funcionais (GTFs), coletores-catadores representaram 57,6% da comunidade, enquanto predadores (25%), raspadores (15,8%), coletores-filtradores (0,88%) e fragmentadores (0,73%) também foram representados. A diversidade e homogeneidade dos GTFs apresentaram estabilização a partir do 14º dia; CONCLUSÕES: Os detritos de S. humboldtiana fornecem um habitat favorável por tempo suficiente para suportar alta densidade e diversidade de invertebrados aquáticos. A baixa abundância de fragmentadores indica pouca influência da comunidade de invertebrados na velocidade de degradação dos detritos. A principal contribuição desta comunidade no processamento dos detritos ocorre por meio do consumo de matéria orgânica particulada fina por coletores-catadores.

AIM: To evaluate leaf degradation and invertebrate colonization of Salix humboldtiana Willd. in a subtropical shallow lake on the coastal plain of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil; METHODS: Litter bags containing 6.85 g of leaves were incubated in the superficial layer of sediment in the littoral region for 1, 4, 7, 14, 32, 47 and 71 days; RESULTS: After 71 days, a loss of 51% of the initial leaf weight was observed (k = 0.0100 d-1). We estimated that it would take 300 days to lose 95% of the initial weight. A total of 16040 organisms and 35 taxa were identified. Caenidae (25.9%), Oligochaeta (19%), Ostracoda (13.8%), Hydracarina (9.8%), Tanypodinae (9.7%) and Coenagrionidae (7.7%) were the most highly represented taxa. We observed increases in density, richness and diversity of taxa over time, with a stabilizing trend noted in the taxa diversity. Regarding the functional trophic groups (FTGs), gathering-collectors accounted for 57.6% of the community, while predators (25%), scrapers (15.8%), filtering-collectors (0.88%) and shredders (0.73%) were also represented. The diversity and evenness of the FTGs had stabilized by day 14; CONCLUSIONS: S. humboldtiana detritus provides a favorable habitat for a sufficient duration to support a high density and diversity of aquatic invertebrates. The small percentage of shredders indicates the minor influence of the invertebrate community on the rate of detrital degradation. The main contribution of invertebrates to detrital processing comes from the consumption of fine particulate organic matter by gathering-collectors.

The growth relations of the shrimps Farfantepenaeus brasiliensis (Latreille, 1817) and F. paulensis (Pérez-Farfante, 1967) were evaluated at Imboassica lagoon, Macaé, Rio de Janeiro State, between June 1995 and September 1997, in four periods after events of sandbar opening. This sandbar separated the lagoon from the Atlantic Ocean. Through the evaluation of the weight/length relationships for the two species, significant differences in each interval after the sandbar openings were observed, as much among males and females as among all individuals of the same species. The results indicated that both species presented negative allometric growth in most of the studied occasions. The frequency and abundance of the two species in the lagoon is linked to many factors, among them the season of the sandbar opening, the span of time in which the sandbar remains opened, and the presence of a reproductive stock of adults close to the area when the sandbar is open. Through the analysis of the relative condition factor (Kr), it was verified that usually the conditions inside the lagoon are favorable to the development of both species, with the exception of the occasions when the sandbar opening events happen quickly and close to each other, allowing to conclude that the sandbar openings have an influence on the growth rates and in the general status of the organisms.

O conteúdo estomacal de 495 espécimens de Farfantepenaeus brasiliensis, 131 de F. paulensis (Penaeidae) e 102 de Macrobrachium acanthurus (Palaemonidae) foi analisado para estabelecer a composição de suas dietas. As espécies foram coletadas em uma lagoa costeira ao norte do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (lagoa Imboassica), entre agosto de 1995 a setembro de 1997, os estômagos retirados dos animais e conservados em álcool 70%. Foram estimados a freqüência de ocorrência dos itens alimentares, seu volume relativo através do método de pontos, e o Índice Alimentar. F. brasiliensis apresentou como itens mais importantes em sua dieta larvas de Chironomidae, Polychaeta e Heleobia australis (Mollusca). Para F. paulensis, os itens mais importantes foram os mesmos de F. brasiliensis, porém invertendo-se a ordem de importância de H. australis e Polychaeta. M. acanthurus apresentou o item detrito como mais importante, seguido de Chironomidae (larvas), Odonata (ninfas), e fragmentos da macroalga Chara. Os resultados mostram que as três espécies são omnívoras, com uma dieta alimentar variada que inclui tanto componentes da macrofauna bêntica e associados a macroalga Chara, como fragmentos vegetais e detritos.

The gut content of 495 specimens of Farfantepenaeus brasiliensis, 131 of F. paulensis (Penaeidae) and 102 of Macrobrachium acanthurus (Palaemonidae) were analyzed to establish the composition of their diets F. brasiliensis had as the most important feeding items in its diet larvae of Chironomidae, Polychaeta and Heleobia australis (Mollusca). For F. paulensis, the most important items were the same as for F. brasiliensis, but the order of importance of H. australis and Polychaeta was inverted. M. acanthurus had detritus as the most important item, followed by Chironomidae larvae, Odonata nymphs, and fragments of the macroalgae Chara. The results showed that the three species were omnivorous, with a varied diet including both components of macrofauna of benthos and associated to the macroalgae Chara and plant fragments and detritus.

Three species of shrimp, Farfantepenaeus brasiliensis (Latreille, 1817), F. paulensis (Pérez-Farfante, 1967) (Penaeidae) and Macrobrachium acanthurus (Wiegmann, 1836) (Palaemonidae) were sampled at the Imboassica lagoon (Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil), in order to estimate the overlap of dietary niches and electivity of their prey, through the analysis of the fauna associated with the macroalgae Chara and of the benthic fauna on the sediment. The overlap of dietary niches was estimated using five indexes. A total of 495 F. brasiliensis, 131 F. paulensis and 102 M. acanthurus stomachs were examined. The results of the different indexes of niche overlap exhibited the same general trend in the three species, indicating a high degree of homogeneity in the diet of the two species of Penaeidae (between 75 and 100%) and a smaller overlap between each Penaeidae species and M. acanthurus (between 23 and 68%). The species presented selective predation, with differences in the two studied habitats. The results show that the three species are omnivorous, with a varied diet including components of benthic macrofauna and those associated with the macroalgae Chara, plant fragments and detritus, and that there are good conditions in the Imboassica lagoon for the development of these species.
