RESUMO: O uso de métodos não destrutivos e de baixo custo para determinação de área foliar tem ganhado importantes aplicações. Os objetivos da pesquisa foram (i) propor um método não destrutivo para estimar a área foliar da cultura da mamona e (ii) construir equações que estimem com precisão e rapidez a área foliar da espécie. Foram coletadas mil folhas sadias e expandidas de cinco cultivares de mamona (New Zealand Purple, Sipeal, Carmencita, Amarelo de Irecê e IAC-80), sendo coletadas 200 folhas de cada uma. O comprimento máximo, largura máxima e área foliar foram calculados para cada folha. Foi calculado o produto entre comprimento e largura (LW). Foram realizados testes com diferentes modelos de regressão linear e não linear entre área foliar e dimensões lineares das folhas de cada cultivar. Os modelos utilizados foram linear, linear sem intercepto e potência. Os critérios para escolha dos melhores modelos para estimar a área foliar da mamona foram maior coeficiente de determinação, maior coeficiente de correlação linear de Pearson, menor critério de informação de Akaike, maior índice de concordância de Willmott e menor raiz do erro quadrático médio. As equações que apresentaram melhores critérios para estimativa da área foliar das cultivares de mamona foram aquelas que utilizaram o produto entre comprimento e largura, em comparação às equações que utilizaram apenas uma dimensão foliar. O modelo ŷ = 0,439 × LW pode ser utilizado para estimar com precisão e rapidez a área foliar da mamona por meio de medidas lineares das folhas, utilizando o produto entre comprimento e largura (LW), independente da cultivar escolhida. ABSTRACT: Using non-destructive and low-cost methods to determine leaf area has gained important applications. The research objectives were (i) to propose a non-destructive method to estimate the leaf area of castor bean crops and (ii) to build equations that accurately and quickly estimate the leaf area of specie. One thousand healthy and expanded leaves of five castor bean cultivars (New Zealand Purple, Sipeal, Carmencita, Amarelo de Irecê, and IAC-80) were collected, and 200 leaves were collected from each. The maximum length, maximum width, and leaf area were calculated for each leaf. The product between length and width (LW) were calculated. We performed tests with different linear and non-linear regression models between leaf area and linear leaf dimensions of each cultivar. The models used were linear, linear without intercept, and power. The criteria for choosing the best models to estimate the leaf area of castor beans were a higher coefficient of determination, more elevated Pearson’s linear correlation coefficient, lower Akaike information criterion, higher Willmott agreement index, and smallest root mean square error. The equations that presented the best criteria for estimating the leaf area of castor bean cultivars were those that used the product between length and width, compared to equations that used only one leaf dimension. The model ŷ = 0.439 × LW can be used to accurately and quickly estimate the castor bean leaf area through linear measurements of the leaves, using the product between length and width (LW), regardless of the cultivar chosen. ABSTRACT The determination of leaf area is fundamental for studies related to plant growth and physiology. Thus, non-destructive methods allow an accurate estimate of the leaf area through linear dimensions of the leaves. The research objective was to construct allometric equations to estimate the leaflet area of peanut cultivars. Then, 2,605 leaflets were collected from six peanut cultivars (IAC Caiapó, IAC 8112, Runner IAC 886, BRS Havana, BRS 151 L7, and IAC Tatuí), with more than 400 leaflets sampled for each cultivar. We measured the length, width, product between length and width, and leaflet area. Linear and non-linear models (linear, linear without intercept, power, and exponential) were built, and the best equation was chosen using the statistical criteria: highest coefficient of determination (R2), Pearson’s linear correlation coefficient (r), Willmott’s agreement index (d), lowest Akaike information criterion (AIC), and root mean square of the error (RMSE). It was found that the models that used the product between length and width were the most suitable for estimating the leaflet area of peanut cultivars. Given the little intraspecific morphological variability, it was possible to group the cultivars, and model y ^ = 0.875 * LW0.929 was indicated to estimate the peanut leaflet area accurately, regardless of the cultivar.

O objetivo no presente trabalho foi avaliar o impacto do déficit hídrico e do alagamento na atividade fotossintética de ameixeiras cultivar 'América'. Foram analisadas a fluorescência da clorofila a e as trocas gasosas em plantas de aproximadamente 12 meses, cultivadas em casa de vegetação. As análises foram iniciadas dois dias após do início do déficit hídrico e um dia após o início do alagamento, totalizando quatro avaliações durante a manutenção dos estresses. A fotossíntese líquida foi reduzida pela limitação estomática em ambos os estresses. A condição de restrição hídrica não alterou o rendimento quântico máximo fotoquímico. Os índices de performance fotossintético revelaram diferenças entre os estresses, caracterizando as plantas de ameixeira, cv. 'América', como mais suscetíveis ao déficit hídrico do que ao alagamento.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of drought and flooding on the photosynthetic activity of Japanese plum (Prunus salicina Lindh), cultivar 'America'. We analyzed the chlorophyll fluorescence and leaf gas exchange in plants, with approximately 12 months, grown in greenhouse and subjected to water deficit. Analyses were initiated two days after the onset of drought and one day after the flooding, resulting in four evaluations during the maintenance of stress. Net photosynthesis was reduced by stomatal limitation in both stresses. The condition of water restriction did not alter the maximum quantum yield. The photosynthetic performance indexes showed differences between stresses, featuring the plants of plum cv America as the most susceptible to drought than flooding.

A presente pesquisa teve por objetivo avaliar o efeito de agentes indutores de estresse hídrico e salino na germinação, crescimento e resposta antioxidante de plântulas de girassol. Sementes da cv. M735 foram germinadas em papel umedecido com soluções osmóticas nos potenciais de 0,0; -0,2; -0,4 e -0,8 MPa, induzidos com PEG 6000 e NaCl. O teste de germinação foi conduzido com quatro subamostras de 100 sementes e quatro repetições por tratamento, em câmara de germinação sob temperatura média de 25 ºC, na ausência de luz. Foram avaliados a porcentagem final e índice de velocidade de germinação das sementes, além do crescimento inicial e atividade de enzimas antioxidantes das plântulas. O estresse hídrico induzido por PEG 6000 aumentou a porcentagem de sementes germinadas no potencial de -0,2 MPa, por outro lado, para o NaCl no potencial de -0,8 MPa, houve significativa redução. Para este mesmo potencial, também houve redução no índice de velocidade de germinação das sementes para ambos os agentes condicionantes. Para os parâmetros de crescimento, o comprimento da parte aérea reduziu linearmente com o aumento das concentrações de PEG 6000 e NaCl. Já para a massa seca de folhas e raízes e o comprimento das raízes, este efeito foi mais expressivo somente no potencial de -0,8 MPa. As enzimas SOD, APX e CAT apresentaram tendência de menor atividade nas plântulas oriundas de sementes acondicionadas em PEG 6000. Na presença do NaCl, a atividade da SOD nas folhas aumentou significativamente nos três potenciais testados em relação a testemunha. Para a APX e CAT este aumento foi observado nos potenciais de -0,2 e -0,4 MPa. Nas raízes não foi observada diferença significativa. A análise conjunta dos parâmetros avaliados indica que a cv de girassol M735, nas condições testadas, apresenta tolerância ao estresse hídrico e salino até o potencial de -0,4 MPa.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of agents inducing water and saline stress on the seed germination and early growth and antioxidant activity in sunflower seedlings. Sunflower seeds, cv. M735, were germinated on moistened paper in solutions with osmotic potentials of 0.0, -0.2, -0.4 and -0.8 MPa induced by PEG 6000 and NaCl. The germination test was conducted with four samples of 100 seeds and four replicates per treatment, in a germination chamber at 25 ºC without light. We evaluated the final percentage and speed of germination index, and the initial growth and activity of antioxidant enzymes in sunflower seedlings. Water stress induced by PEG 6000 increased the percentage of seeds germinated in the potential of -0.2 MPa, on the other hand, for NaCl in the potential of -0.8 MPa, there was a significant reduction. For this same potential, there was also a reduction in the rate of seed germination speed index in both conditioning agents. For the parameters of growth, shoot length decreased linearly with increasing concentrations of PEG 6000 and NaCl. As for the dry mass of leaves and roots and root length, this effect was more significant only in the potential of -0.8 MPa. The enzymes SOD, APX and CAT activity tended to be lower in seedlings originating from seeds in PEG 6000. In the presence of NaCl, the activity of SOD in the leaves increased significantly in the three tested for potential witnesses. For APX and CAT increase was observed at potentials of -0.2 and -0.4 MPa. In the roots there was no significant difference. An analysis of the evaluated parameters indicates that sunflower cv M735, under the conditions tested, showed tolerance to drought stress and salt until the potential of -0.4 MPa.
