RESUMO: Materiais de base biológica provenientes de proteínas, polissacarídeos e lipídios têm sido estudados como alternativas biodegradáveis aos plásticos sintéticos, bem como matrizes para incorporação de substâncias bioativas. Neste contexto, a pectina é um polissacarídeo utilizado para produzir filmes flexíveis para embalagens de alimentos. A própolis é uma mistura complexa de substâncias resinosas com propriedades antimicrobianas e outras propriedades biológicas que podem ser usadas para produzir embalagens ativas para alimentos. Contudo, a aplicação de tais materiais ainda está limitada devido à sua natureza hidrofílica. Portanto, este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar experimentalmente as isotermas de sorção e o calor isotérmico de sorção de filmes de pectina-própolis nas temperaturas de 15, 25, 30 e 35 °C, e determinar o modelo matemático que melhor se ajusta aos dados experimentais obtidos. A pectina foi extraída do mesocarpo do pequi, fruta amplamente consumida no bioma cerrado brasileiro que gera grande quantidade de cascas (exocarpo e mesocarpo) descartadas. Dentre os modelos matemáticos estudados, o modelo Sigma Copace foi o que melhor representa o comportamento higroscópico dos filmes de pectina-própolis. O calor isotérmico de sorção diminuiu com o aumento do teor de água, os filmes apresentaram comportamento semelhante aos produtos agrícolas. A compreensão do comportamento deste filme contribui na aplicação de filmes de pectina-própolis produzidos utilizando mesocarpo de pequi como fonte de pectina. ABSTRACT: Bio-based materials from proteins, polysaccharides, and lipids have been studied as biodegradable alternatives to synthetic plastics, as well as matrices for incorporation of bioactive substances. In this context, pectin is a polysaccharide used to produce flexible food packaging films. Propolis is a complex mixture of resinous substances with antimicrobial and other biological properties that can be used to generate active food packaging. However, the application of such materials is still limited due to their hydrophilic nature. Thus, this experimentally evaluated the sorption isotherms and isothermal heat of sorption of pectin-propolis films at temperatures of 15, 25, 30, and 35 °C, and determined the mathematical model that best fits the experimental data obtained. The pectin was extracted from pequi mesocarp, a widely consumed fruit in the Brazilian cerrado biome that generates large amounts of peels (exocarp and mesocarp) which are discarded. Among the mathematical models studied, the Sigma Copace model was found to best represent the hygroscopic behavior of the pectin-propolis films. The isothermal heat of sorption decreased with increasing water content, and the films presented similar behavior to agricultural products. The understanding of such film’s behavior contributed to the application of pectin-propolis films produced using pequi mesocarp as a pectin source. Resumo Objetivou-se realizar uma análise espacial da taxa de mortalidade hospitalar (TMH) por síndrome respiratória aguda grave (SRAG) atribuída à COVID-19 em crianças e adolescentes no Brasil no período de 2020 a 2021. Utilizou-se o método de cluster para agrupar as unidades federativas (UFs) com base na TMH. Em 2020, clusters com altas TMHs foram formados por UFs Norte/Nordeste. Em 2021, houve redução na TMH. Os clusters com maiores taxas permaneceram na região N/NE. Diferenças regionais foram observadas nas TMHs. Os achados podem refletir as desigualdades sociais e o acesso à atenção hospitalar, principalmente na faixa etária de menores de 1 ano pela gravidade da doença neste grupo.

Abstract The objective was to perform a spatial analysis of the hospital mortality rate (HMR) due to severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) attributed to COVID-19 among children and adolescents in Brazil from 2020 to 2021. A cluster method was used to group federal units (FUs) based on HMR. In 2020, clusters with high HMRs were formed by north/northeast FUs. In 2021, there was a reduction in HMR. Clusters with higher rates remained in the N/NE region. Regional differences were observed in the HMR. The findings may reflect social inequalities and access to hospital care, especially in the under 1-year-old age group due to the severity of the disease in this group.

RESUMO: A secagem de produtos agroindustriais é utilizada visando preservar as qualidades sensoriais e nutricionais, bem como reduzir a atividade biológica que impede a deterioração e a perda do valor comercial. Assim, objetivou-se neste trabalho estudar a modelagem matemática da secagem da casca de goiaba para obtenção de farinha, bem como determinar o coeficiente de difusão efetivo, a energia de ativação e as propriedades termodinâmicas nas temperaturas de secagem de 45, 55, 65 e 75 °C. O experimento foi realizado no Instituto Federal Goiano - Campus Rio Verde, e as goiabas foram adquiridas no comércio local do município de Rio Verde, GO, no estádio de maturação comercial. Dentre os modelos analisados, Midilli foi selecionado para representar a cinética de secagem da casca de goiaba. O coeficiente de difusão efetivo aumentou com a elevação da temperatura e a energia de ativação para a difusão líquida na secagem foi de 37,207 kJ mol-1. A entalpia e a entropia diminuíram com a elevação da temperatura de secagem, enquanto a energia livre de Gibbs aumentou com o incremento da temperatura de secagem. ABSTRACT: The drying agroindustrial products is used to preserve the sensory and nutritional quality and to reduce the biological activity, preventing deterioration and loss of commercial value. BACKGROUND The Golden Syrian hamster (Mesocricetus auratus), Ferrets (Mustela putorius furo), and macaques have been described as useful laboratory animals naturally susceptible to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. OBJECTIVES To study the mechanism of lung injury, we describe the histopathological features of SARS-CoV-2 infection in Golden Syrian hamsters inoculated intranasally with the A.2 Brazilian strain. METHODS Hamsters were intranasally inoculated with the A.2 variant and euthanised at 3-, 5-, 10- and 15-days post-inoculation. The physical examination and body weight were recorded daily. Neutralising antibodies and viral RNA load of the respiratory tract were assessed during necropsies. FINDINGS The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) model presented body weight loss, high levels of respiratory viral RNA load, severe segmentary pneumonitis, and bronchial fistula besides lymphatic trapping and infiltration, like the human SARS-COV-2 pathogenesis. The presence of subepithelial lymphoeosinophilic infiltrate was highlighted in our results; it contributed to the detachment of SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid-positive epithelial cells resulting in the infectious cell plugs. MAIN CONCLUSIONS The SARS-CoV-2 caused segmentary pneumonia and vascular damage. In our comprehension, the infectious cell plugs, as being aspirated from the upper respiratory tract into the terminal bronchial lumen, work as a “Trojan horse”, thus contributing to the dissemination of the SARS-CoV-2 infection into specific regions of the deep lung parenchyma. Resumo Antecedentes Encefalites autoimunes (EAIs) são um grupo de doenças inflamatórias caracterizadas pela presença de anticorpos contra antígenos neuronais e gliais, que ocasionam sintomas psiquiátricos subagudos, queixas de memória e distúrbios anormais do movimento. A maioria dos pacientes é jovem, e o atraso no tratamento está associado a pior prognóstico. Objetivo Com o apoio da Academia Brasileira de Neurologia (ABN) e da Sociedade Brasileira de Neurologia Infantil (SBNI), desenvolvemos um consenso sobre o diagnóstico e o tratamento da EAIs no Brasil utilizando a metodologia Delphi. Métodos Um total de 25 especialistas, incluindo neurologistas e neurologistas infantis, foram convidados a participar. Resultados Os especialistas concordaram que os pacientes com critérios de possíveis EAIs devem ser submetidos ao rastreio de anticorpos antineuronais no soro e no líquido cefalorraquidiano (LCR) por meio das técnicas de ensaio baseado em tecidos (tissue-based assay, TBA, em inglês) e ensaio baseado em células (cell-based assay, CBA, em inglês). As crianças também devem ser submetidas ao rastreio de de anticorpo contra a glicoproteína da mielina de oligodendrócitos (anti-myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein, anti-MOG, em inglês). O tratamento deve ser iniciado dentro das primeiras 4 semanas dos sintomas, sendo as opções de primeira linha metilprednisolona combinada com imunoglobulina intravenosa (IGIV) ou plasmaférese. O tratamento de segunda linha inclui rituximabe e ciclofosfamida. Bortezomib e tocilizumab são opções de tratamento de terceira linha. A maioria das crises epilépticas nas EAIs são sintomáticas, e os fármacos anticrise podem ser desmamadas após a fase aguda. Em relação à encefalite antirreceptor de N-metil-D-aspartato (anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor, anti-NMDAR, em inglês), os especialistas concordaram que agentes imunossupressores orais não devem ser usados. Os pacientes devem ser avaliados na fase aguda e pós-aguda mediante escalas funcionais e cognitivas, como Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Modified Rankin Scale (mRS), e Clinical Assessment Scale in Autoimmune Encephalitis (CASE). Abstract Background Autoimmune encephalitis (AIE) is a group of inflammatory diseases characterized by the presence of antibodies against neuronal and glial antigens, leading to subacute psychiatric symptoms, memory complaints, and movement disorders. The patients are predominantly young, and delays in treatment are associated with worse prognosis. Objective With the support of the Brazilian Academy of Neurology (Academia Brasileira de Neurologia, ABN) and the Brazilian Society of Child Neurology (Sociedade Brasileira de Neurologia Infantil, SBNI), a consensus on the diagnosis and treatment of AIE in Brazil was developed using the Delphi method. Methods A total of 25 panelists, including adult and child neurologists, participated in the study. Results The panelists agreed that patients fulfilling criteria for possible AIE should be screened for antineuronal antibodies in the serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) using the tissue-based assay (TBA) and cell-based assay (CBA) techniques. Children should also be screened for anti-myelin oligodendrocyte glucoprotein antibodies (anti-MOG). Treatment should be started within the first 4 weeks of symptoms. The first-line option is methylprednisolone plus intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) or plasmapheresis, the second-line includes rituximab and/or cyclophosphamide, while third-line treatment options are bortezomib and tocilizumab. Most seizures in AIE are symptomatic, and antiseizure medications may be weaned after the acute stage. In anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (anti-NMDAR) encephalitis, the panelists have agreed that oral immunosuppressant agents should not be used. Patients should be evaluated at the acute and postacute stages using functional and cognitive scales, such as the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), the Modified Rankin Scale (mRS), and the Clinical Assessment Scale in Autoimmune Encephalitis (CASE). Conclusion The present study provides tangible evidence for the effective management of AIE patients within the Brazilian healthcare system. ABSTRACT Introduction: Dengue is the most fatal virus disease spread by mosquito bites and Aedes aegypti is the main transmitting agent. It is an endemic disease in the tropical and subtropical regions, currently affecting more than 100 countries. Although most patients present mild forms of the disease, a considerable proportion of individuals has severe alterations in the blood count. The aim of this study was to evaluate the consumption pattern of blood components in epidemic and non-epidemic periods and to verify if there was an impact on dengue cases and the death rate. Method: This is a retrospective cross-sectional study conducted through the collection and analysis of data from the Brazilian Ministry of Health from 2008 to 2019 on new cases and deaths from dengue, as well as the consumption of blood components in the period mentioned by hemovigilance bulletins of the Brazilian authority. Results: Regarding the results, no significant difference was found between the absolute amount of blood components used in years with an epidemic peak. Regarding the relative values, an important variation was shown among the distributive consumption patterns of blood components in the outbreak years. In the univariate linear regression analysis, there was statistical significance between the increase in the number of dengue cases and deaths from dengue with the increase in the consumption of red blood cell concentrates (RBP), platelet concentrates (PP), fresh frozen plasma (FFP) and cryoprecipitate (Cryo) (p-value < 0.05). The increase in dengue cases was related to the increase in Cryo consumption with clinical significance (R² > 0.5), but dengue deaths were not correlated to the same. In multivariate analysis, all regression models had clinical and statistical significance. Conclusion: The data obtained in the present study demonstrate that there is a relevant relationship between the increase in cases and deaths from dengue with the blood components usage, especially PP, FFP and cryoprecipitate. Resumo Anfíbios são um dos grupos de vertebrados mais ameaçados globalmente, e os anuros são sua ordem mais representativa. Doenças infecciosas emergentes têm sido associadas ao declínio global das espécies de anfíbios, fenômeno relatado em todo o mundo. Na região Nordeste, o Ceará tem uma abundante anurofauna, com cerca de 5% de suas espécies sendo consideradas criticamente ameaçadas. Em projetos de pesquisa, várias patologias são observadas em anuros silvestres locais, contudo, poucos casos têm sido publicados. O objetivo deste trabalho foi reunir achados patológicos e incidentais em anuros nativos do estado do Ceará, nordeste do Brasil. Os achados foram registrados durante necrópsias e exames clínicos. A amostra incluiu 38 espécimes, distribuídos em 13 espécies, originários de 13 localidades, examinados entre 2010 e 2022. A maioria das lesões (71%, n = 38) apontou para fisiopatologia inflamatória, incluindo infecções parasitárias com agentes lesionais - lesões granulomatosas e necrotizantes com inclusões intracitoplasmáticas, compatíveis com Mycobacteria e Ranavírus, respectivamente. Fibrolipoma e carcinoma hepatocelular se apresentaram como nódulos únicos, estando o último associado a uma infecção helmíntica cística. Calcinose hepática difusa representou doença de etiologia tóxico/metabólica. Catarata bilateral foi a alteração ocular mais frequente (60%, n=5), mas sem diagnóstico etiológico conclusivo. Indícios de doenças infecciosas foram detectados e necessitam de técnicas complementares de diagnóstico etiológico. Abstract Amphibians are among the most threatened animal groups on Earth, with anurans representing the most prevalent order within this group. Globally, emerging infectious diseases are linked to the decline of amphibian populations, a phenomenon also observed in northeastern Brazil. In particular, the state of Ceará boasts a rich and abundant anurofauna, with nearly 5% of its species considered critically endangered. Despite numerous pathologies observed in local anurans through research projects, published cases remain scarce. This study aimed to compile pathological and incidental findings in native anurans from Ceará State, Northeastern Brazil. Data were derived from necropsies and clinical examinations conducted on 38 specimens across 13 species from 13 sites, spanning from 2010 to 2022. Most lesions (71 %, n = 38) indicated inflammatory pathophysiology, with observations of parasitic infections and agents within lesions, granulomatous or necrotic lesions with intracytoplasmic inclusions consistent with Mycobacteria ana Ranavirus infections, respectively. Fibrolipomas and hepatocellular carcinoma presented as single solid nodules, the latter associated with cystic helminth infections. Diffuse hepatic calcinosis suggested a toxic/metabolic etiology. Bilateral cataract was the most common ocular alteration (60%, n=5), though its etiology remained undetermined. Abstract Introduction Perianal fistula is a common colorectal disease which is caused mainly by cryptoglandular disease. Although most cases are treated successfully by surgery, management of complex perianal fistulas (CPAF) remains a challenge with limited results in recurrence and sometimes associated with fecal incontinence. The CPAF treatment with autologous adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ASCs) had become a research hotspot. The technique started to be used in the treatment of Crohn's disease (CD) fistulas, where the studies showed safe and goods result from the procedure. Cultured ASCs have been used but this approach requires the preceding collection of adipose tissue, time for isolation of ASCs and subsequent in vitro expansion, need for laboratory facilities, and expertise in cell culturing. These factors have been getting over by using the commercially available alternative, allogenic ASCs. Treatment with allogeneic ASCs has shown good results in patients with CD fistulas, however with the disadvantage of being expensive. Objective To show that the injection with freshly collected adipose tissue is an alternative to treatment with autologous or allogenic ASCs with several advantages. Methods: In this case report, we show our first experience in the treatment of CPAF with the application of collected adipose tissue in a tertiary referral hospital from Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Results The patient had a good postoperative recuperation with a complete fistula healing after 8 months without adverse effects. ABSTRACT The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, due to its high infectivity and pathogenicity, spread across the planet in just over three months, with issues related to its clinical course and still inconclusive risk factors. The pandemic, therefore, surprised all health professionals, leaving a question: What is the impact of regular physical exercise on the effects of vaccination and disease control? The study in question is a theoretical essay on health, addressing definitions and central characteristics of intersectoral actions for health through qualitative data using the MEDLINE databases via the PubMed portal, Embase, Cochrane Library and Scopus. Throughout the article, scientific evidence is presented that the regular practice of physical exercises can normalise the inflammatory profile of the practitioner and improve the body's immune response. The close relationship between inflammatory and immune responses and the chronic effect that physical exercise exerts on the body allows it to be considered a therapy that strengthens the body's defence not only against COVID-19 but for all infections of the same nature, including the adaptive effect it has on the respiratory system. It is concluded, according to the evidence presented here, that the regular and guided practice of physical exercises, respecting the principles of sports training, acts significantly as an auxiliary tool in the strengthening and preparation of the immune system against COVID-19, which may potentiate the effects of their vaccines, as evidenced with other types of vaccines, such as H1N1.

Resumo Há uma crescente preocupação com a participação de hospedeiros e reservatórios silvestres na epidemiologia de diversos patógenos, principalmente no contexto das mudanças ambientais e da expansão do conceito "One Health". O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar a presença de hemoplasmas em gambás resgatados da região metropolitana do estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Amostras de sangue foram coletadas de 15 Didelphis aurita e submetidas à extração de DNA e PCR utilizando-se "primers" para os genes 16S rRNA e 23S rRNA. O exame físico e a análise hematológica também foram realizados. Três dos 15 gambás testaram positivo para Mycoplasma spp. hemotrópico por PCR. Os sinais clínicos eram inespecíficos e associados a lesões traumáticas. Anemia e leucocitose foram detectadas em animais positivos. A análise filogenética indicou que o hemoplasma detectado estava posicionado entre 'Ca. Mycoplasma haemodidelphis' detectado em D. virginiana da América do Norte e hemoplasmas recentemente detectados em D. aurita do estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil. Este estudo indica a existência de infecções por hemoplasmas em D. aurita, da região metropolitana do Rio de Janeiro, e reforça a necessidade de novos inquéritos epidemiológicos, para esclarecer a participação destes na dinâmica de circulação de patógenos transmitidos por carrapatos. Abstract There is a growing concern about the participation of wild hosts and reservoirs in the epidemiology of several pathogens, particularly within the context of environmental changes and the expansion of the One Health concept. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of hemoplasmas in opossums rescued from the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. Blood samples were collected from 15 Didelphis aurita and subjected to DNA extraction and PCR using primers for the 16S rRNA and 23S rRNA genes. Physical examination and hematological analysis were also performed. Three out of 15 opossums tested positive for hemotropic Mycoplasma spp. by PCR and showed hematological alterations such as anemia and leukocytosis. Clinical signs were non-specific and associated to traumatic lesions. The phylogenetic analysis indicated that the hemoplasma detected was positioned between 'Ca. Mycoplasma haemodidelphis' detected in D. virginiana from North American and hemoplasmas recently detected in D. aurita from the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Resumo Fundamento Tem sido observado um grande avanço nas técnicas e nos dispositivos para a realização de intervenções coronárias percutâneas (ICP) em oclusões totais coronarianas crônicas (OTC), mas existem poucos dados da prática do mundo real em países em desenvolvimento. Objetivos Relatar as características clínicas e angiográficas, os aspectos dos procedimentos e os resultados clínicos da ICP de OTC em centros dedicados a esse procedimento no Brasil. Métodos Os pacientes incluídos foram submetidos à ICP de OTC em centros participantes do LATAM CTO Registry, um registro multicêntrico latino-americano dedicado à coleta prospectiva desses dados. Os critérios de inclusão foram procedimentos realizados no Brasil, idade acima de 18 anos e presença de OTC com tentativa de ICP. A definição de OTC foi lesão de 100% em uma artéria coronária epicárdica, conhecida ou estimada como tendo pelo menos 3 meses de evolução. Resultados Foram incluídos dados de 1.196 ICPs de OTC. Os procedimentos foram realizados principalmente para controle da angina (85%) e/ou tratamento de uma grande área isquêmica (24%). A taxa de sucesso técnico foi de 84% e foi alcançada com técnicas de fios anterógrados em 81%, dissecção/reentrada anterógrada em 9% e retrógrada em 10% dos procedimentos. Os eventos cardiovasculares adversos intra-hospitalares ocorreram em 2,3% dos casos, sendo a mortalidade de 0,75%. Conclusões As OTC podem ser tratadas no Brasil por intervenção coronária percutânea de forma efetiva e com baixas taxas de complicações. Abstract Background Major advances have been seen in techniques and devices for performing percutaneous coronary interventions (PCIs) for chronic total occlusions (CTOs), but there are limited real-world practice data from developing countries. Objectives To report clinical and angiographic characteristics, procedural aspects, and clinical outcomes of CTO PCI performed at dedicated centers in Brazil. Methods Included patients underwent CTO PCI at centers participating in the LATAM CTO Registry, a Latin American multicenter registry dedicated to prospective collection of these data. Inclusion criteria were procedures performed in Brazil, age 18 years or over, and presence of CTO with PCI attempt. CTO was defined as a 100% lesion in an epicardial coronary artery, known or estimated to have lasted at least 3 months. Results Data on 1196 CTO PCIs were included. Procedures were performed primarily for angina control (85%) and/or treatment of moderate/severe ischemia (24%). Technical success rate was 84%, being achieved with antegrade wire approaches in 81% of procedures, antegrade dissection and re-entry in 9%, and retrograde approaches in 10%. In-hospital adverse cardiovascular events occurred in 2.3% of cases, with a mortality rate of 0.75%. Conclusions CTOs can be treated effectively in Brazil by using PCI, with low complication rates. Resumo: A demanda por técnicas que permitam avaliar o potencial fisiológico das sementes de forma rápida e assertiva fazem da espectroscopia no infravermelho próximo (FT-NIR) e da análise de plântulas pelo software ILASTIK ferramentas promissoras. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar o potencial fisiológico de sementes de Urochloa decumbens por meio da espectroscopia no infravermelho próximo (FT-NIR) e do software ILASTIK. Sementes de 10 lotes de U. decumbens foram classificadas quanto o potencial fisiológico (germinação e vigor) e depois foram obtidos espectros FT-NIR de amostras individuais de sementes, sendo os espectros originais pré-processados utilizando diferentes métodos de correção de dispersão utilizados para a construção de um modelo de classificação por meio da PLS-DA. Para a avaliação do ILASTIK, as plântulas foram fotografadas aos 7 e 14 dias de germinação e o classificador treinado foi aplicado às imagens, gerando dados de número de plântulas fortes, plântulas fracas e sementes não germinadas. Com os dados da técnica FT-NIR pré-processados pela 2ª derivada de Savitzky-Golay, foi possível obter um modelo de classificação com alta eficiência para discriminar as classes quanto ao potencial fisiológico das sementes. O ILASTIK foi eficiente para a classificação das sementes quanto ao potencial fisiológico com apenas 7 dias de germinação. Abstract: The demand for techniques that make it possible to assess the physiological potential of seeds quickly and assertively make near-infrared spectroscopy (FT-NIR) and seedling analysis using ILASTIK software promising tools. The aim of this study was to evaluate the physiological potential of Urochloa decumbens seeds using near-infrared spectroscopy (FT-NIR) and ILASTIK software. Seeds from 10 lots of U. decumbens were classified according to their physiological potential (germination and vigor) and then FT-NIR spectra were obtained from individual seed samples, the original spectra being pre-processed with different dispersion correction methods used for the construction of a classification model through partial least squares discriminant analysis (PSL-DA). For the ILASTIK evaluation, the seedlings were photographed at 7 and 14 days of germination and the trained classifier was applied to the images, generating data on the numbers of strong seedlings, weak seedlings and non-germinated seeds. With data from the FT-NIR technique pre-processed by the 2nd derivative of Savitzky-Golay, it was possible to obtain a classification model with high efficiency to discriminate the classes regarding the physiological potential of the seeds. ILASTIK was efficient to classify seeds according to their physiological potential after only 7 days of germination. RESUMO Objetivo: Descrever as características clínicas dos casos de Síndrome Respiratória Aguda Grave (SRAG) por COVID-19 em recém-nascidos (RNs) em 2020 e 2021, no Brasil, registrados no Sistema de Informação da Vigilância Epidemiológica da Gripe (SIVEP-Gripe). Métodos: As variáveis analisadas foram: sexo, raça/cor, hospitalização, internação em unidade de terapia intensiva (UTI), uso de suporte ventilatório, sinais e sintomas (febre, tosse, saturação de O2<95%, dispneia, desconforto respiratório, diarreia e vômitos), evolução (óbito ou cura), fatores de risco/comorbidades. As variáveis categóricas foram apresentadas em frequências absolutas e relativas. Resultados: Houve 1.649 registros de SRAG por COVID-19 em RNs, com predomínio de pardos nos dois anos. Os sintomas mais frequentes foram, respectivamente, em 2020 e 2021: desconforto respiratório (67,0 e 69,7%), febre (46,3 e 46,2%) e tosse (37,0 e 46,3%). Em 2020, 30,5% dos pacientes receberam suporte ventilatório invasivo, e 41,6% em 2021. Além disso, mais de 55% dos casos precisaram de internação em UTI, e acima de 16% morreram. Conclusão: Destaca-se a elevada proporção de casos que precisou de cuidados intensivos e que evoluíram para óbito. ABSTRACT Objective: To describe the clinical characteristics of cases of COVID-19 severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in Brazilian newborns (NBs) in 2020 and 2021, recorded in the Influenza Epidemiological Surveillance Information System (Sistema de Informação da Vigilância Epidemiológica da Gripe — SIVEP-Gripe). Methods: The variables analyzed were gender, race/skin color, hospitalization, intensive care unit (ICU) admission, use of ventilatory support, signs and symptoms (fever, cough, O2 saturation<95%, dyspnea, respiratory distress, diarrhea, and vomiting), progress (death or cure), risk factors/comorbidities. Categorical variables were expressed as absolute and relative frequencies. Results: We found 1,649 records of COVID-19 SARS in NBs, with a predominance of multiracial babies in both years. The most frequent symptoms in 2020 and 2021 were, respectively: respiratory distress (67.0 and 69.7%), fever (46.3 and 46.2%), and cough (37.0 and 46.3%). In 2020, 30.5% of patients received invasive ventilatory support; in 2021, this number was 41.6%. In addition, more than 55% of cases required ICU admission, and over 16% died.
