RESUMO: A Eryngium foetidum apresenta desuniformidade e baixas taxas de germinação. Assim, visando reduzir as problemáticas durante a produção de mudas, alguns tratamentos podem ser realizados. Por isso, essa pesquisa teve como objetivo avaliar a qualidade fisiológica de sementes de chicória da Amazônia submetidas a tratamentos de imersão em água. Foram realizados dois experimentos, em condição controlada de temperatura (25 ºC) e em condição de viveiro, testados seis tratamentos (0, 12, 24, 36 e 48 horas) em ambos. Na condição controlada, utilizou-se delineamento inteiramente casualizado e no viveiro, blocos ao acaso. Sendo avaliado: índice de velocidade de germinação/emergência (IVG/IVE), tempo médio de germinação/emergência (TMG/TME), porcentagem de germinação/emergência, desenvolvimento de plântulas normais, massa fresca e massa seca. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de regressão linear e polinomial de 2ª ordem no programa estatístico computacional “R”. Na condição controlada, o IVG apresentou valor máximo de 4,65 após estimativa de 18,03 horas de imersão, para o TMG 12 h de imersão proporcionou tempo médio menor (13,76 dias) e obteve 39,26% de sementes germinadas após estimativa de 26,27 h de imersão, assim como 19,34% de plântulas normais em 27,97 h. Enquanto no viveiro, para o TME observou menor valor após 48 h e massa fresca e seca se obteve maiores médias após 12 h, 18,47 g e 1,44 g, respectivamente. Assim, a imersão em água por 12 horas proporcionou menor tempo de germinação e maior massa fresca e seca, possivelmente o tratamento auxiliou na reativação do metabolismo e crescimento do embrião. ABSTRACT: Eryngiumfoetidum exhibits low germination rates and heterogeneous seed maturation. Thus, in order to reduce problems during seedling production, a number of treatments can be used. The aim of this study was to assess the physiological quality of Amazon chicory seeds submitted to water immersion treatments. Two experiments were conducted, under controlled temperature (25 ºC) and nursery conditions, with six treatments (0, 12, 24, 36 and 48 hours) in each. A completely randomized design was used in the controlled condition and random blocks in the nursery. The following were assessed: germination/emergence speed index (GSI/ESI), mean germination/emergence time (MGT/MET), germination/emergence percentage, normal seedling development, fresh weight and dry weight. The data were submitted to linear and second-order polynomial regression analysis in the R statistical program. RESUMO: O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a eficácia clínica da aplicação intra-articular de células-tronco mesenquimais alógenas derivadas do tecido adiposo (AD-CTM) no tratamento de cães portadores de osteoartrite secundária a displasia do coxofemoral (DCF). Doze cães de ambos os sexos, diferentes raças, idades e peso, portadores de graus variados de DCF comprovada em radiografia e livres de quaisquer outras alterações clínicas ou ortopédicas, foram utilizados no estudo. Todos os cães foram submetidos a avaliação ortopédica nos dias 0, 30, 60 e 90 após aplicação de AD-CTM na dose de 2 x 106. Além disso, os tutores preencheram a um questionário, baseado no Índice de dor crônica de Helsinque (IDCH) nos mesmos intervalos. ABSTRACT: This study assessed the efficacy of an intra-articular injection of allogeneic adipose tissue-derived from mesenchymal stem cells (AD-MSCs) for the treatment of hip dysplasia in dogs. The study group included 12 otherwise healthy dogs of different breeds, ages, weights, and degrees of hip dysplasia diagnosed using radiography. An orthopedic assessment was performed on all dogs before and at 30, 60, and 90 days after infusion of AD-MSCs(2 × 106cells). On the same days, each dog’s owner answered a questionnaire based on theHelsinkiChronic Pain Index. The data were converted to ordinal data based on the score for each variable, and the Friedman test for multiple comparisons was used to verify the results. Compared with the corresponding values on day 0, orthopedic and gait assessments and owners’ reported pain indexes improved over the 90-day observation period. These results suggested that treatment with allogeneic AD-MSCs significantly reduced the clinical signs associated with hip dysplasia during the study period. Resumo Encontrar formas de reaproveitar resíduos é uma alternativa não só para reduzir sua presença em ambientes urbanos e naturais, mas também para reduzir custos e consumo de matérias primas pelas indústrias. O objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar as propriedades de concretos fabricados através da substituição de agregados graúdos e miúdos convencionais por resíduo de mármore. Foram realizadas análises de morfologia, granulometria, massa específica e da fase cristalina dos agregados. A composição dos constituintes, em massa, foi 1:1,2:3 de cimento Portland CPIII-32 RS, agregados miúdos e agregados graúdos, respectivamente, com adição de 0,4 de água, moldados e curados em água. Foram confeccionadas cerca de 25 amostras de concreto, variando a quantidade de agregado graúdo/fino na massa de cimento de acordo com as proporções de agregados de: A= 100% brita/ 100% areia, B= 100% RRO grosso/ 50% RRO fino + 50% areia, C= 50% RRO grosso + 50% cascalho/ 100% RRO fino, e D = 100% RRO grosso/100% RRO fino. As amostras cilíndricas medindo ∅50 x 100 mm foram submetidas a testes de absorção de água e resistência à compressão, e os resultados obtidos foram comparados com algumas normas e com a literatura. Abstract Finding ways to reuse residue is an alternative not only to reduce its presence in urban and natural environments, but also to reduce costs and consumption of resources by industries. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the properties of concretes made by replacing conventional coarse and fine aggregates with marble residue. Morphological, granulometry, specific gravimetry and crystalline phase analyses were carried out in the aggregates. The composition of the constituents, by mass, was 1:1,2:3 of Portland cement CPIII-32 RS, fine aggregates, and coarse aggregate, respectively, with the addition of 0.4 of water, molded and cured in water. About 25 concrete samples were made, varying the amount of coarse/fine aggregate in the cement mass according to the aggregates proportions of: A= 100% gravel/ 100% sand, B= 100% coarse RRO/ 50% fine RRO + 50% sand, C= 50% coarse RRO + 50% gravel/ 100% fine RRO, and D = 100% coarse RRO/100% fine RRO. The cylindrical samples measuring ∅50 x 100 mm were subjected to water absorption and compressive strength tests, and the results were compared with standards and literature. The water absorption was smaller than 2.5% and the compressive strength values were between 27-33 MPa, close to the resistance of cement used. RESUMO Visando ampliar a variabilidade genética, a batata-doce necessita ser propagada sexuadamente em programas de melhoramento genético. No entanto, devido à presença de tegumento duro e espesso nas sementes, é necessária aplicação de algum método para quebra de dormência. A escarificação química é a técnica que tem demonstrado maior eficiência da relação entre sementes obtidas em cruzamentos e aquelas que germinam, gerando genótipos a serem testados quanto ao seu potencial, visando desenvolver uma nova cultivar comercial. Assim, objetivou-se identificar os efeitos de tempos de imersão das sementes em ácido sulfúrico (98%) na germinação e crescimento inicial das plântulas de batata-doce. ABSTRACT To increase genetic variability, sweet potato needs to be sexually propagated in breeding programs. However, its seeds have a hard and thick integument, requiring some dormancy breaking method. Chemical treatment of seeds allows greater efficiency of the relationship between seeds obtained in crosses and those that germinate, providing genotypes to be tested for their potential, aiming at developing a new commercial cultivar. Thus, the objective of this study was to identify the effects of immersion times of seeds in sulfuric acid (98%) on the germination and initial growth of sweet potato seedlings. The seeds were immersed for five different times: 0 (control), 20, 40, 60, and 80 min. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design with ten repetitions consisting of 25 seeds each experimental plot. The germination percentage, germination speed index (GSI), dry mass of whole seedlings, and length of the largest root and shoot of the seedlings were evaluated. The germination percentage and GSI increased with immersion time until 53.30 min, with maximum estimated values of 85.39 and 25.10%, respectively. BACKGROUND Leishmania tarentolae is a non-pathogenic species found in lizards representing an important model for Leishmania biology. However, several aspects of this Sauroleishmania remain unknown to explain its low level of virulence. OBJECTIVES We reported several aspects of L. tarentolae biology including glycoconjugates, proteolytic activities and metabolome composition in comparison to pathogenic species (Leishmania amazonensis, Leishmania braziliensis, Leishmania infantum and Leishmania major). METHODS Parasites were cultured for extraction and purification of lipophosphoglycan (LPG), immunofluorescence probing with anti-gp63 and resistance against complement. Parasite extracts were also tested for proteases activity and metabolome composition. FINDINGS Leishmania tarentolae does not express LPG on its surface. It expresses gp63 at lower levels compared to pathogenic species and, is highly sensitive to complement-mediated lysis. This species also lacks intracellular/extracellular activities of proteolytic enzymes. It has metabolic differences with pathogenic species, exhibiting a lower abundance of metabolites including ABC transporters, biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids and steroids, TCA cycle, glycine/serine/threonine metabolism, glyoxylate/dicarboxylate metabolism and pentose-phosphate pathways. ABSTRACT Objective: The prevalent symptoms of severe dengue in pediatric patients are divided into three subgroups: severe plasma leakage, severe bleeding, and severe organ damage. In addition, the seasonal patterns of the disease and the outcomes of cure or death from dengue were evaluated. Methods: An epidemiological, observational, analytical, cross-sectional study was conducted with data from the Notifiable Disease Information System (SINAN - Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação and DATASUS - Departamento de Informática do Sistema Único de Saúde) of the Ministry of Health from 2019 to 2020. Results: During the study period, 1,857 cases of severe dengue were observed in the pediatric age group, with the most common symptoms being respiratory failure, melena, hematemesis, and altered level of consciousness. The total proportion of patients hospitalized for severe dengue was 89.6%, and 51.2% of these patients died, corroborating the importance of early detection of the disease. Conclusion: Severe dengue is more prevalent during the seasonal period, with hot and humid characteristics owing to the mechanism involved in the viral cycle. The most prevalent symptoms of severe dengue in pediatric patients were respiratory failure alone, gastrointestinal bleeding, and altered level of consciousness. ABSTRACT To ensure the viability of bacteria in the biomineralization process for crack filling and healing, protection from the heat (generated by cement hydration) and the retraction (during hardening) of the microorganisms is required. Superabsorbent polymers, as chitosan, known for their resistance during mixing and water storage capacity, are suitable bacteria carriers. This study aimed to determine the optimal percentage of chitosan capsules and its effects on the physical and mechanical properties in mortars. Método: Foi realizado um estudo de acurácia, com amostra mínima de 331 declarações de óbito com as causas de óbito do capítulo 10 (doenças do aparelho respiratório — J00-J99 — conforme subcategorias) da Classificação Internacional de Doenças na versão 10, considerando a definição de causa básica de óbito pela equipe de investigação como o padrão-ouro. Foram calculadas a sensibilidade, especificidade, valores preditivos positivo e negativo e as razões de verossimilhanças positivas e negativas com os respectivos intervalos de confiança a 95%. Abstract Background: Acute respiratory diseases are difficult to measure and contribute to a large number of ill-defined causes of death, which affects the reliability of mortality information. Objective: To verify the accuracy of the definition of the underlying cause of death for acute respiratory diseases registered in the Mortality Information System of the Federal District in 2018. Method: An accuracy study was conducted, with a minimum sample of 331 death certificates with the causes of death according to Chapter 10 (diseases of the respiratory system — J00-J99 — according to subcategories) of the International Classification of Diseases, version 10, considering the definition of the underlying cause of death by the research team as the gold standard. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, and positive and negative likelihood ratios were calculated with their respective 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: Overall, 396 death certificates were included. ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the possible renal and hepatic alteration by root canal filling pastes in mice. Material and Methods: Fifty-four mice were divided into nine groups and received one polyethylene tube implant containing two filling pastes (CTZ or calcium hydroxide pastes). Empty polyethylene tubes were used as a negative control. All tubes were implanted subcutaneously in the back of the mice. After time intervals of 7, 21, and 63 days, 1.5 mL of blood was collected by cardiac puncture, and serum samples were used for serological testing. Urea, creatinine, aspartate transferase (AST), alanine transferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) were evaluated. Data were analyzed by 2-way ANOVA (p<0.05). Results: When comparing CTZ and calcium hydroxide pastes and empty tubes and experimental time intervals, no significant differences in the results were found for any of the biochemical parameters analyzed (p>0.05). Resumo Antecedentes A disfunção olfatória (DO) é uma manifestação frequente da doença do coronavírus 2019 (COVID-19). A apolipoproteína E (APOE) é uma proteína que interage com o receptor da enzima conversora de angiotensina, essencial para a entrada viral na célula. Publicações anteriores sugeriram um possível papel da APOE na gravidade da COVID-19. Até onde sabemos, nenhuma publicação encontrou associações significativas entre a gravidade dessa doença, DO e polimorfismos da APOE (E2, E3 e E4). Objetivo Analisar a epidemiologia da DO e sua relação com os polimorfismos do gene APOE em uma coorte de pacientes com COVID longa. Métodos Um estudo de coorte prospectiva com pacientes acompanhados em ambulatório neurológico pós-COVID, com DO sendo definida como uma redução subjetiva da função olfativa após a infecção e a DO persistente sendo definida quando a queixa durou mais de 3 meses após a resolução da infecção por COVID-19. Este estudo transversal é parte de uma pesquisa maior com dados anteriormente relatados, focando na performance cognitiva dos pacientes. Resultados Foram selecionados 221 pacientes para esse estudo, dos quais 186 haviam coletado amostras de sangue para genotipagem APOE. O grupo DO persistente foi mais jovem e apresentou menor taxa de internação na fase aguda da doença (p < 0,001). Além disso, a frequência do alelo E4 da APOE foi menor nesse grupo (p = 0,035). Abstract Background Olfactory dysfunction (OD) represents a frequent manifestation of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Apolipoprotein E (APOE) is a protein that interacts with the angiotensin-converting enzyme receptor, essential for viral entry into the cell. Previous publications have suggested a possible role of APOE in COVID-19 severity. As far as we know, no publications found significant associations between this disease's severity, OD, and APOE polymorphisms (E2, E3, and E4). Objective To analyze the epidemiology of OD and its relationship with APOE polymorphisms in a cohort of Long-COVID patients. Methods We conducted a prospective cohort study with patients followed in a post-COVID neurological outpatient clinic, with OD being defined as a subjective reduction of olfactory function after infection, and persistent OD being defined when the complaint lasted more than 3 months after the COVID-19 infection resolution. This cross-sectional study is part of a large research with previously reported data focusing on the cognitive performance of our sample. Results The final sample comprised 221 patients, among whom 186 collected blood samples for APOE genotyping. The persistent OD group was younger and had a lower hospitalization rate during the acute phase of the disease (p < 0.001). Furthermore, the APOE variant E4 allele frequency was lower in this group (p = 0.035). This study evaluated OD in an outpatient population with COVID-19. Resumo Objetivo Esta Revisão de Escopo teve como objetivo descrever e mapear as medidas disponibilizadas pelos smartwatches como ferramenta para identificação da Síndrome de Fragilidade em idosos. Métodos Foram incluídos estudos publicados em qualquer idioma, sem restrição de data de publicação, que descrevessem o uso de medidas fornecidas por smartwatches na avaliação da Síndrome de Fragilidade e/ou seus critérios em idosos. Descritores em inglês para smartwatches, smartbands, Síndrome da Fragilidade e envelhecimento foram utilizados para desenvolver uma estratégia de busca abrangente, que foi então aplicada para pesquisar nas seguintes bases de dados: COCHRANE LIBRARY, EMBASE, SCOPUS, PUBMED/MEDLINE, LILACS, WEB OF SCIENCE e PEDRO. Resultados A busca inicial identificou um total de 156 artigos e foram identificados 2 artigos a partir da busca manual nas referências dos estudos elegíveis. Em seguida, foram incluídos 4 estudos que utilizaram medidas diárias de contagem de passos para síntese descritiva, e três dos quatro também utilizaram dados relacionados ao sono e FC para avaliar a fragilidade em idosos. Os resultados obtidos nesta revisão indicam que parâmetros derivados de smartwatches têm sido utilizados para identificar estágios de fragilidade em diferentes ambientes, sendo a maioria dos estudos associados a outras condições clínicas. Abstract Objective This scoping review aimed to describe and map the measures provided by smartwatches as a tool for identifying Frailty Syndrome in older adults. Methods Studies published in any language, without publication date restrictions, that described the use of measures provided by smartwatches in evaluating or identifying Frailty Syndrome and/or its criteria in older adults were included. English descriptors for smartwatches, smartbands, Frailty Syndrome and Older Adults were used to develop a comprehensive search strategy, which was then applied to search the following databases: COCHRANE LIBRARY, EMBASE, SCOPUS, PUBMED/MEDLINE, LILACS, WEB OF SCIENCE and PEDRO. Results The initial search identified a total of 156 articles and 2 articles were identified from the manual search in the references of eligible studies. Next, 4 studies that used daily step count measurements for descriptive synthesis were included, and three of the four also used sleep and heart rate data to assess frailty in older adults. The results obtained in this review indicate that parameters derived from smartwatches have been used to identify stages of frailty in different areas, with the majority of studies being associated with other clinical conditions. Conclusion Smartwatches are an excellent frailty monitoring tool through daily measurements of step count, sleep data and heart rate. RESUMO As aves silvestres têm grande destaque na transmissão de doenças ao homem, principalmente pela facilidade de acesso à população humana, levantando preocupações sobre o potencial impacto dessa proximidade no contexto da saúde pública. O presente estudo relata a ocorrência de ARV e PBV em aves silvestres de uma área de proteção ambiental no bioma Amazônico. Obtivemos 155 espécimes fecais de 47 espécies de aves silvestres, que foram submetidos a extração de RNA, detecção de ARV e PBV por técnicas moleculares, sequenciamento nucleotídico e análise filogenética. A prevalência de infecção por ARV foi 0,6% (1/155), sendo positivo em um indivíduo de Myrmotherula longipennis, e a prevalência de PBV foi 1,29% (2/155), afetando dois insdivíduos de Guira guira. A análise filogenética agrupou as cepas de PBV no genogrupo I, mostrando intensa relação filogenética com cepas isoladas de outras regiões geográficas. ABSTRACT Wild birds have great prominence in the transmission of diseases to humans, mainly due to their ease of access to human populations, raising concerns about the potential impact of that proximity on public health. The present study reports ARV and PBV occurrence in wild birds from an environmental protection area in the Amazon biome, in Pará state, Brazil. We obtained 155 fecal specimens from 47 species of wild birds for RNA extraction, ARV and PBV detection utilizing molecular methods, nucleotide sequencing, and phylogenetic analysis. ARV prevalence was 0.6% (1/155), being positive in an individual of Myrmotherula longipennis, and PBV prevalence was 1.29% (2/155), affecting two individuals of Guira guira. The PBV strains were assigned to genogroup I based on phylogenetic analysis, and they shared a strong phylogenetic link with strains isolated from different geographic locations. RESUMO A batata-doce (Ipomoea batatas L.) possui grande variabilidade genética que contribui para maior produção e qualidades das raízes. Os agricultores de batata-doce do Oeste Paulista, Brasil, plantam durante as quatro estações e utilizam há duas décadas os mesmos genótipos. Desse modo, são necessárias pesquisas que visem avaliar novos genótipos e indicar os mais promissores. Portanto, objetiva-se identificar a adaptabilidade e estabilidade de genótipos de batata-doce em seis épocas de plantio: Setembro de 2019, Janeiro de 2020, Abril de 2020, Setembro de 2020, Outubro de 2020 e Dezembro de 2020 no Oeste Paulista, por meio da metodologia da regressão linear proposta por Eberhart & Russell (1966) e pelo método Centróide. ABSTRACT Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) have great genetic variability that contribute to higher production and root quality. Sweet potato farmers in the Western region of São Paulo state, Brazil, plant during the four seasons and have used the same genotypes for two decades. Thus, research is needed to evaluate new genotypes and indicate the most promising ones. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify the adaptability and stability of sweet potato genotypes in six planting seasons: September 2019, January 2020, April 2020, September 2020, October 2020, and December 2020 in Western São Paulo using the linear regression methodology proposed by Eberhart & Russell (1966) and the centroid method.
