ABSTRACT. One of the domains of genetic enhancement that has extensively employed both simulation and authentic data is Biometrics. Selecting efficient models for the Genome-Wide Selection (GWS) process using molecular markers (SNPs) presents several challenges. Among these challenges is the effective identification of the optimal model for fitting a given dataset. To contribute to this endeavor, this paper's primary objective is to assess the predictive accuracy of nine (9) distinct models, each following different paradigms within the realm of Biometrics. The data employed in this study were generated through simulation, encompassing the primary issues encountered in this field of research, including high dimensionality, nonlinearity, and multicollinearity. As the primary findings, notable observations include the enhancement of predictive efficiency as data noise decreases, the predominance of the tree paradigm (for low noise levels, BOO), and the efficacy of the neural network paradigm (for high noise levels, RBF). RESUMO As conquistas recentes transformaram a Linguística Computacional em uma área de pesquisa dinâmica e em um importante campo de desenvolvimento de aplicativos que está sendo explorado pelas principais empresas de tecnologia. Apesar dos avanços, muita pesquisa ainda precisa ser realizada para permitir que os humanos possam interagir com dispositivos computacionais por meio da linguagem natural, da mesma maneira que os humanos interagem com falantes nativos da mesma língua. Como fazer com que os computadores entendam ou criem novas metáforas, metonímias ou outras figuras da linguagem? É possível desenvolver sistemas de linguagem natural capazes de produzir letras ou poesia no mesmo nível que os seres humanos? Podemos produzir sistemas capazes de atribuir novos significados a elementos sintáticos que são imediatamente percebidos como coerentes pelos seres humanos? Neste artigo, descrevemos a evolução da linguística computacional, traçando um paralelo com a evolução das teorias linguísticas e especulando sobre as oportunidades de pesquisa da área e suas limitações.

ABSTRACT Recent achievements have turned Computational linguistics into a dynamic research area, and an important field of application development that is being explored by leading technology companies. Despite the advances, there is still much room for improvement to allow humans to interact with computational devices, through natural language, in the same way that humans interact with native speakers of the same language. How to make computers understand or create new metaphors, metonymies or other figures of language? Is it possible to develop natural language systems capable of producing lyrics or poetry on the same level as humans? Can we produce systems capable of assigning new meanings to syntactic elements that are immediately perceived as coherent by humans? In this paper, we account for the evolution of computational linguistics, drawing a parallel with the evolution of linguistic theories and speculating about its research opportunities and foreseeable limitations.

As transformações da prática médica nos últimos anos - sobretudo com a incorporação de novas tecnologias da informação - apontam a necessidade de ampliar as discussões sobre o processo ensino-aprendizagem na educação médica. A utilização de novas tecnologias computacionais no ensino médico tem demonstrado inúmeras vantagens no processo de aquisição de habilidades para a identificação e a resolução de problemas, o que estimula a criatividade, o senso crítico, a curiosidade e o espírito científico. Nesse contexto, ganham destaque as Redes Neurais Artificiais (RNA) - sistemas computacionais cuja estrutura matemática é inspirada no funcionamento do cérebro humano -, as quais têm sido úteis no processo ensino-aprendizagem e na avaliação de estudantes de Medicina. Com base nessas ponderações, o escopo da presente comunicação é revisar aspectos da aplicação das RNA na educação médica.

The transformations that medical practice has undergone in recent years - especially with the incorporation of new information technologies - point to the need to broaden discussions on the teaching-learning process in medical education. The use of new computer technologies in medical education has shown many advantages in the process of acquiring skills in problem solving, which encourages creativity, critical thinking, curiosity and scientific spirit. In this context, it is important to highlight artificial neural networks (ANN) - computer systems with a mathematical structure inspired by the human brain - which proved to be useful in the evaluation process and the acquisition of knowledge among medical students. The purpose of this communication is to review aspects of the application of ANN in medical education.

A resposta inflamatória sistêmica representa o evento patogênico central da sepse, subjazendo às manifestações clínicas e aos achados laboratoriais presentes nos enfermos. Inúmeras pesquisas têm demonstrado que os linfócitos T CD4+CD25+ - também conhecidos como células T reguladoras (Treg) - participam dos processos de desenvolvimento da sepse, em virtude de sua capacidade de suprimir a resposta imune. Com base nessas ideias, propôs-se, no presente artigo, a discussão do papel dos linfócitos Treg na sepse, com base na revisão da literatura com estratégia de busca definida (LILACS, PubMed e SciELO), tendo em vista duas abordagens principais: a participação dessas células nos processos de inflamação e imunidade, e as perspectivas de investigação fisiopatológica computacional da condição mórbida.

The systemic inflammatory response represents the core pathogenic event of sepsis, underlying clinical manifestations and laboratory findings in patients. Numerous studies have shown that CD4+CD25+ T lymphocytes, also known as regulatory T lymphocytes (Treg), participate in the development of sepsis due to their ability to suppress the immune response. The present article discusses the role of Treg lymphocytes in sepsis based on a specific search strategy (Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences / Literatura Latino-americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde - LILACS, PubMed, and Scientific Electronic Library Online - SciELO) focusing on two main topics: the participation of Treg cells in inflammation and immunity as well as perspectives in the computational physiological investigation of sepsis.

Documentos históricos são ferramentas essenciais para historiadores. Em muitos casos, o acesso aos documentos pode ser difícil em função de inúmeros fatores, tais como a distância, segurança e fragilidade do documento. Uma forma de contornar esse problema é a digitalização e disponibilização do acesso em uma rede de comunicação, a Internet. Este artigo apresenta um ambiente para visualização de documentos históricos, desenvolvido dentro do projeto de Digitalização de manuscritos dos acervos dos Cartórios do 1º. e 2º. Ofícios do Arquivo Histórico da Casa Setecentista de Mariana - PHAN.

Historical documents are essential tools for historians and researchers. However, in many cases, access to documents can be difficult or impossible, depending on factors such as distance, security and fragility of the document. One way to circumvent this problem would be through scanning and allowing access through an open network of communication, such as the Internet. This article presents an environment for viewing of historical documents developed within the digitalization project of the manuscripts of the historical archive of the "Cartórios do 1º e 2º Ofícios Casa Setecentista de Mariana-IPHAN".

Este trabalho descreve a experiência do projeto de digitalização de manuscritos dos acervos dos Cartórios do 1º e 2º Ofícios do Arquivo Histórico da Casa Setecentista de Mariana-Iphan, apresentando as tecnologias e os recursos disponíveis atualmente para a tarefa de digitalização, suas características e deficiências. São mostrados também os critérios nas decisões adotadas e os metadados utilizados.

This article presents the technologies and resources currently available for the digitalization, their characteristics and weaknesses. It also outlines the criteria guiding the decisions taken during the project and the metadata incorporated into the project. This work describes the experience digitalization project of the manuscripts of the historical archive of the "Cartórios do 1º e 2º Ofícios Casa Setecentista de Mariana-Iphan".
