Abstract This study aimed to develop and evaluate bread with the use of pulp and flours of pequi, in partial replacement of water and wheat flour, to develop a bakery product with good technological, nutritional and sensorial qualities. The pequi husk and pulp flours were obtained by means of a thermal pre-treatment, oven drying and standardization of the dry material. Whereas, the bread formulation was defined through the baker’s formulation. Besides, the dehydration process caused significant changes (p<0.05) in the L* value and chromaticity (C*), mainly of the flours (husk and pequi pulp), such changes are due to non-enzymatic oxidative processes and pigment degradation, especially carotenoids. The effect of the substitution of ingredients (wheat flour and water) by husk and pulp flours and pequi pulp contributed to the increase in lipid, crude fiber, nitrogen-free extract and energy value content. However, the substitution promoted changes in the attributes of color and textural properties, such as increased hardness, chewiness and cohesiveness. Nevertheless, all formulations showed good sensory acceptance and thus, pequi sweet breads can be implemented in school meals for contributing and meeting the nutritional recommendations established by the School Feeding Brazilian Program (PNAE).

Abstract The Caatinga is dominated by a semiarid climate and a high plant biodiversity dealing with anthropogenic disturbance and climate change. Previous studies suggest that Caatinga became a completely soil-water pulse-dominated forest in response to reduced water availability at the end of the last ice age, around 10 cal kyr BP. This work aimed to identify vegetative and climatic evolution, and the human influence in the Cariri region, one of the driest parts of Brazil. We sampled soil in a temporal pond to identify pollen. The testimony is 170 cm in lenght and achieves 6,216 cal yr BP at the base. Pollen analysis indicates the presence of taxa representative of humid climates, between 6,216 and ca. 5000 cal yr BP, like Azolla, followed by implantation of Caatinga's modern configuration from ca. 4,900 cal yrs BP. After 2,700 cal yr BP, humid episodes occurred, possibly related to the El Niño - La Niña variation across the region, marked by increased algae and aquatic herbs concentrations. The occurrence of human activity species like Caryocar, Dioscorea, Spondias, and Licania suggest possibly landscape manipulation by pre - Columbian populations, and exotic Pinus and Prosopis reveal changes in the tree cover caused by European colonization in the Caatinga.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the morphogenic and structural characteristics and the population stability index of ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) tillers when the pasture was submitted to two stocking methods during grazing cycles. The experimental design was a complete randomized block, with repeated measurements over time (n=6 cycles), two treatments (stocking methods) and three area replicates. In the continuous stocking method, the highest population density of tillers was observed. The highest tiller weight occurred in the rotational stocking method. The morphogenic variables and the other structural variables were not altered by the stocking methods and showed differences during the grazing cycles. The tiller population stability index was similar in the two pasture management strategies, and both can be used for ryegrass management considering this parameter.

The hydrogen storage properties of pure magnesium and magnesium ZK60 alloy containing 2.5 wt% of mischmetal (Mm) processed by Cold Rolling (CR) and Low Temperature Rolling (LTR) were investigated. Before CR and LTR processing, Equal Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP) was employed in the alloys as an initial processing step to refine their microstructures. Microstructure findings showed that the ECAP+LTR route is more effective than the others to generate grain refinement - a desirable aspect in hydrogen storage materials. SEM and TEM results in combination with XPS analysis revealed that the ZK60 + 2.5 wt. % Mm alloy after being processed by ECAP + LTR had more refined grains (with sizes < 1μm) and exhibited superior resistance to the formation of oxides and/or hydroxides when compared with the pure magnesium alloy. The refined microstructures of the ECAP+LTR samples combined with the presence of highly oriented grains along to the (002) plane and large amount of defects – which are features associated to the LTR route - such as cracks and voids, resulted in a fast activation kinetics than for the samples processed by ECAP + CR route.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the cardiorespiratory changes caused by ketamine-associated medetomidine, and the recovery time after intramuscular application of atipamezole or yohimbine in Puma concolor. For this, the application of medetomidine (100µg/kg) associated with ketamine (5mg/kg) was performed in eleven brown ounces, and the cardiorespiratory parameters were recorded every 15 minutes during 90 minutes of evaluation. Afterwards, anesthesia was reversed with intramuscular application of yohimbine (0.4mg/kg; n=5) or atipamezole (0.25mg/kg; n=6), and time to recovery was analyzed. Of the cardiorespiratory parameters evaluated, there was a difference only in respiratory rate (between 60 and 90 minutes), however, within the reference range for the species. In addition, there was a significantly shorter time for sternal decubitus in the animals of the atipamezole group (18±7 minutes) when compared to the yohimbine group (36±17 minutes), however the complete recovery time was statistically equal between the two reversers analyzed. Thus, the anesthetic association promoted efficient, safe and fast induction anesthesia in puma, allowing the animals to be immobilized during the 90 minutes of evaluation without complications. Comparing anesthetic reversal with atipamezole and yohimbine, drug equivalence was observed in the complete recovery time of the animals.

Abstract: The growing need for the use of clean energy has led society to seek alternatives to fossil fuels in order to less pollute the environment. Sugarcane has been known to produce enough biomass and to have associative microorganisms, such as plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB), which have the potential to improve the yield of crops. The objective of this study is to evaluate the efficiency and the isotopic dilution of 15N of microbial inoculants containing endophytic diazotrophic bacteria, individually inoculated and in mixture, on productivity, technological quality and biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) of sugarcane variety RB92579. The experiment was conducted for three consecutive years, comprising different crop cycles, in a completely randomized block design with four replications. The evaluations were at 11 months after planting for plant-cane, and at 12 months after cutting for ratoon cane and second ratoon cane. The contribution of BNF by 15N natural abundance technique to inoculated treatments ranged from 18% to 57.31%. This study showed that no strain promoted the improvement on yield and biological nitrogen fixation during the three cycles of sugarcane (plant-cane, ratoon cane and second ratoon cane). However, industrial characteristics of sugar cane can be affectd by PGPB inoculation.

ABSTRACT Candida spp. is associated with almost 80% of all nosocomial fungal infections and is considered a major cause of blood stream infections. In humans, Cryptococcosis is a disease of the lungs caused by the fungi Cryptococcus gattii and Cryptococcus neoformans. It can be potentially fatal, especially in immune-compromised patients. In a search for antifungal drugs, Deguelia duckeana extracts were assayed against these two fungi and also against Candida albicans, which causes candidiasis. Hexane branches and CH2Cl2 root extracts as well as the substances 4-hydroxylonchocarpine, 3,5,4′-trimethoxy-4-prenylstilbene and 3′,4′-methylenedioxy-7-methoxyflavone were assayed to determine the minimal inhibitory concentration. Phytochemical study of CH2Cl2 root and hexane branch extracts from D. duckeana A.M.G. Azevedo, Fabaceae, resulted in the isolation and characterization of nine phenolic compounds: 4-hydroxyderricine, 4-hydroxylonchocarpine, 3′,4′,7-trimethoxy-flavonol, 5,4′-dihydroxy-isolonchocarpine, 4-hydroxyderricidine, derricidine, 3,5,4′-trimethoxy-stilbene, 3′,4′,7-trimethoxyflavone and yangambin. The only active extract was a CH2Cl2 root showing minimal inhibitory concentration 800 µg/ml against C. gattii, and the investigation of compounds obtained from this extract showed that 4-hydroxylonchocarpine was active against all three fungi (C. neoformans, C. gattii and C. albicans). These results suggest that D. duckeana extracts have potential therapeutic value for the treatment of pathogenic fungi.

ABSTRACT A list of spider species is presented for the Belém Area of Endemism, the most threatened region in the Amazon Basin, comprising portions of eastern State of Pará and western State of Maranhão, Brazil. The data are based both on records from the taxonomic and biodiversity survey literature and on scientific collection databases. A total of 319 identified species were recorded, with 318 occurring in Pará and only 22 in Maranhão. About 80% of species are recorded at the vicinities of the city of Belém, indicating that sampling effort have been strongly biased. To identify potentially high-diversity areas, discounting the effect of variations in sampling effort, the residues of a linear regression between the number of records and number of species mapped in each 0.25°grid cells were analyzed. One grid, representing the Alto Turiaçu Indigenous land, had the highest deviation from the expected from the linear regression, indicating high expected species richness. Several other grid cells showed intermediate values of the regression residuals, indicating species richness moderately above to the expected from the model.

Abstract Objective: The Oxford Classification for Immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) identifies pathological variables that may predict the decline of renal function. This study aimed to evaluate the Oxford Classification variables as predictors of renal dysfunction in a cohort of Brazilian children and adolescents with IgAN. Methods: A total of 54 patients with IgAN biopsied from 1982 to 2010 were assessed. Biopsies were re-evaluated and classified according to the Oxford Classification. Multivariate analysis of laboratory and pathological data was performed. The primary outcomes were decline of baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) greater than or equal to 50%. Results: Mean follow-up was 7.6 ± 5.0 years. Mean renal survival was 13.5 ± 0.8 years and probability of decline ≥50% in baseline eGFR was 8% at five years of follow-up and 15% at ten years. Ten children (18.5%) had a decline of baseline eGFR ≥ 50% and five (9.3%) evolved to end-stage renal disease. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that baseline proteinuria, proteinuria during follow-up, endocapillary proliferation, and tubular atrophy/interstitial fibrosis were associated with the primary outcome. Multivariate Cox analysis showed that only baseline proteinuria (HR, 1.73; 95% CI, 1.20-2.50, p = 0.003) and endocapillary hypercellularity (HR, 37.18; 95% CI, 3.85-358.94, p = 0.002) were independent predictors of renal dysfunction. No other pathological variable was associated with eGFR decline in the multivariate analysis. Conclusion: This is the first cohort study that evaluated the predictive role of the Oxford Classification in pediatric patients with IgAN from South America. Endocapillary proliferation was the unique pathological feature that independently predicted renal outcome.

ABSTRACT The goal of this study is to characterize the weed phytosociology in some major erect and prostrate cowpea cultivars in Brazil, in the Northern growing conditions of Minas Gerais state. The test was conducted in Janaúba, Minas Gerais state. The treatments consisted in five erect cultivars (BRS Guariba, BRS Tumucumaque, BRS Novaera, BRS Itaim and BRS Cauamé) and four prostrate ones (BRS Marataoã, BRS Pajeú, BRS Pujante and BRS Xiquexique). The plots were composed of four five meter rows, spaced 0.5 m apart, for erect cultivars and 1.0 m for the prostrated ones. Weed sampling was performed 50 days after sowing by standard Square Method. The species were identified and quantified, and then dried at 65 oC for 72 hours and weighed. The frequency, absolute and relative density and abundance, the importance value index (IVI) and the similarity index were evaluated. In the erect cultivars, the Amaranthaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Asteraceae and Convolvulaceae families stood out with higher IVI’s. In prostrate cultivars, the Amaranthaceae, Asteraceae and Malvaceae families stood out. Portulaca oleracea and Amaranthus spp. were the species with the highest IVI. The similarity index between erect and prostrate cultivars was 72%; nine of the 16 families occurred in both cultivars. BRS Tumucumaque, erect, and BRS Pujante, prostrate had lower weed infestation.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to describe electrocardiographic findings in pumas (Puma concolor). The animals were sedated with 0.15mg/kg of detomidine plus 5mg/kg of ketamine and anesthetized with sevoflurane (GSEVO, n=6), or isoflurane (GISO, n=5). The heart rate was 95 ± 13bpm. The changes observed on GSEVO animals were: atrial standstill with ventricular conduction, isolated episodes of ventricular premature contraction, atrioventricular blockage of first degree, reduction of the amplitude of the QRS complexes, deep S wave, and increase of the amplitude of the T wave. In the GISO group a right bundle branch block of the His bundle, atrioventricular blockage of first degree and of the amplitude of the T wave. Arrhythmias couldn´t be related to the use of inhalant anesthesia due to the lack of myocardial awareness to catecholamines. Findings such as atrioventricular block in first degree may have occurred due to the use of α-2 adrenergic agonists. This study improved the knowledge about electrocardiographic alterations in anesthetized pumas, however further studies are required to correlate these findings to the use of anesthetic agents.

ABSTRACT The species Dicksonia sellowiana, popularly known as xaxim, is a fern native to the Americas and found in Brazil in the Atlantic Forest. In 2001, its use for making gardening pots was banned, and it was added to the IBAMA [Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources] list as an endangered species. This paper describes the effect of different extraction techniques – including ultrasound, turbolysis, maceration, infusion, decoction, and soxhlet using ethanol and 70% hydroalcoholic solvent on its physical and chemical aspects. The yield of each extraction was evaluated, as well as the profile by HPLC-DAD, the polyphenol content, flavonoids, proanthocyanidins, and steroids, in addition to the antioxidant activities through the DPPH and phosphomolybdenum complex reduction methods. The data were statistically analyzed through standard deviation, Tukey, and PCA. The results showed that the soxhlet extraction using both solvents had the highest overall yield; however, the yield is not directly related to the increase in total bioactive content and antioxidant activities. Extractions by decoction and turbolysis using a hydroalcoholic solvent exhibited the best results in total content and antioxidant activity – results that are evident when evaluated through PCA, demonstrating that this solvent and these extractions are the most selective in the proposed study.

ABSTRACT The species Senecio westermanii Dusén, which belongs to the Asteraceae family, is an endemic and native plant from Brazil. It is found mainly in the Atlantic Forest region, in Paraná and São Paulo states. This study aimed to evaluate the phytochemical composition using a qualitative phytochemical analysis and high performance liquid chromatography with diode array detector (HPLC-DAD), to evaluate preliminary toxicity in vitro using Artemia salina and antioxidant potential. Qualitative phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, iridoids, steroids, triterpenes, saponinic glycosides and aminogroups. The analysis by HPLC-DAD provided the characteristic fingerprint of each sample. In the A. salina assay, the results of LD50 over 1000 μg/mL for all samples did not indicate toxicity of the evaluated extracts. All samples demonstrated antioxidant activity by reducing phosphomolybdenum complex. The highest activity was detected in the chloroform fraction, which presented activity of 92.51% compared to the standard rutin. Regarding the trial to reduce the radical DPPH•, the ethyl acetate fraction showed an IC50 of 26.98 µg/mL. In the thiobarbituric acid assay (TBARS), the hexane fraction showed the highest antioxidant activity compared to the standard rutin. These findings indicate that the Senecio westermanii is a potential source of natural antioxidants, stimulating new studies that enable their use in the treatment of disorders associated with free radicals. In addition, the species did not present toxicity in its evaluation, ensuring its applicability.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

This study aimed to know the perception of Gir cattle breeders and farm employees about parasitic otitis and practices regarding methods of treatment and control. A questionnaire was applied on specific topics about the disease. The results showed that the otitis occurred in 25 (89.3%) of the 28 farms studied, where the main etiologic agents were the nematodes Rhabditis spp. The majority of the farmers regarded the disease as a serious problem, mainly in cattle older than eight years of age. About half of the respondents did not observe a correlation between season and prevalence of the otitis; however, 30.8% reported an increase of its incidence during the rainy season. In addition to various methods and products for the rhabditiosis treatment, a lack of standardized preventive or curative protocols was found, suggesting insufficient knowledge about control of the disease.
