Abstract Mollinedia (Monimiaceae) presents numerous microendemic species, and its centre of diversity is in the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest, where more than half of the species occur. The taxonomy of microendemic species can be challenging because their morphological and genetic variations can be interpreted as a response to geographic isolation rather than a circumscription for different species. In this paper, we describe Mollinedia pignalii Lírio & Pauli, a microendemic species from the Espírito Santo state, Brazil. Vegetatively, M. pignalii is similar to Mollinedia elegans Tul. and Mollinedia schottiana (Spreng.) Perkins; however, it presents the following differences: white-puberulous leaves, staminate flowers with a flat receptacle and 6 to 14 stamens, white-puberulous pistillate flowers with a cupuliform receptacle and 8 to 22 carpels, and white-puberulous drupelets. Due to the similarity between the three species, M. pignalii has been collected and deposited in herbaria under different names. Here, we describe the new species based on morphology and genome size, a comparison with similar species, and ecological comments in an integrative approach. We also provide its conservation status and an identification key for the species of Monimiaceae occurring in the state of Espírito Santo. Nas áreas de Cerrado em zona de ecótono com o Pantanal, o solo apresenta características inerentes ao processo de formação dos solos tanto do Planalto Central quanto da Planície do Pantanal. Considerando tal premissa, esta área deve se destacar por sua elevada heterogeneidade edáfica. O presente estudo teve como objetivos determinar os atributos físicos, químicos e físico-hídricos que melhor explicam a heterogeneidade de solos em áreas de Cerrado, ecótono com o Pantanal, e avaliar se estes atributos diferem entre os fragmentos estudados e entre solos de Cerrado do Planalto Central e da Planície do Pantanal. Foram coletadas 160 amostras de solo e descritos 11 perfis em cinco áreas de Cerrado zona de ecótono com o Pantanal (15º43' S; 56º04' W). Foram identificadas as classes Plintossolo Pétrico Concrecionário típico, Plintossolo Pétrico Litoplíntico típico, Latossolo Amarelo distrófico típico e Latossolo Amarelo distrófico com plintita, sendo que as últimas três ainda não haviam sido descritas para esta região. Os atributos químicos CTC, H, M.O., K, P, Mg, Ca, Mn explicaram 40,49% da variabilidade de solos da região em estudo, diferindo ou não entre os fragmentos estudados. A distribuição espacial dos atributos variou entre aleatória e agregada, sendo os atributos químicos CTC, K, Ca e Mg similares aos solos da Planície do Pantanal. Já o Al, o P e o Mn bem como as variáveis hídricas foram similares ao Planalto. Por outro lado, o teor médio de matéria orgânica, o pH, cascalho e calhaus foram característicos tanto do Planalto como da Planície.

In areas of the Cerrado-Pantanal ecotone in Brazil, the soil displays features which are inherent to the processes of soil formation, both of the Central Plateau and the Pantanal Plain. Given this premise, the area should be noteworthy for its high level of edaphic heterogeneity. The present study aimed to determine the physical, chemical and physico-hydric attributes that best explain the heterogeneity of soils in areas of the Cerrado-Pantanal ecotone, and to assess whether these attributes differ between the studied fragments and between the Cerrado soils of the Central Plateau and of the Pantanal Plain. One hundred and sixty soil samples were collected and 11 profiles described for five areas of the Cerrado-Pantanal ecotone (15º43' S, 56º04' W). The following classes were identified: typic Concretionary Petric Plinthosol; typic Lithoplintic Petric Plinthosol; typic dystrophic Yellow Latosol; dystrophic Yellow Latosol with plinthite, the last three not yet having been described for this region. The chemical attributes CEC, M, OM, K, P, Mg, Ca and Mn explained 40.49% of the variability of the soils in the region under study, whether differing or not between the studied fragments. Spatial distribution of the attributes varied between random and aggregated, with the chemical attributes CEC, K, Ca and Mg being similar to soils of the Pantanal Plain. Whereas Al, P and Mn, as well as the hydric variables, were similar to the Plateau. On the other hand, the average organic matter content, pH, gravel and pebbles, were characteristic of both the Plateau and the Plain.

INTRODUÇÃO: A cocaína é extraída das folhas do arbusto da coca (Erythroxylon coca), podendo ser consumida de várias formas, mas o modo mais comum é pela aspiração da droga, sendo absorvida pela mucosa nasal, causando vasoconstricção, levando o seu uso crônico à perfuração de septo nasal. Pioderma gangrenoso é uma doença inflamatória rara, idiopática que se caracteriza pela presença de úlceras destrutivas principalmente em membros inferiores. Seu diagnóstico clínico é muitas vezes de exclusão. OBJETIVO: Descrever a raridade de associação entre Pioderma Gangrenoso e cocaína. Relato de Caso: E. A., 27 anos, com apresentação atípica de Pioderma Gangrenoso com perfurações de septo nasal e palato duro usuária de grande quantidade de cocaína, sendo necessário diferenciar qual patologia causou esse dano. COMENTÁRIOS FINAIS: Além da necessidade dessa diferenciação, apenas existem três casos relatados na literatura, envolvendo o Pioderma Gangrenoso complicado com perfuração de septo nasal em usuários de cocaína.

INTRODUCTION: The cocaine is obtained from the leaves of the coca (Erythroxylon coca). It can be used in many ways, but the most common is the drug inhalation. The Cocaine also causes vasoconstriction at nasal mucous membrane and its chronic use can cause necrosis and nasal septum perforation. Pyoderma gangrenosum is an uncommon idiopathic disease characterized by ulcerations, usually observed on the legs. Its diagnosis is most common an exclusion of others diseases. So far, there is no specific treatment based on evidence by randomized controlled trials. OBJECTIVE: Describe the rare association between Pyoderma gangrenosum and cocaine. CASE REPORT: E. A., 27-year-old woman with destruction of nasal septum and palate who has been using a big amount of cocaine, been necessary note the difference from which disease cause de damage. Final Comments: Also there are only three cases of Pyoderma gangrenosum complicated with nasal septum perforation in cocaine users.

Lectin-carbohydrate binding may be involved in the recognition of Schistosoma mansoni sporocysts by haemocytes of Biomphalaria; therefore, we tested if this interaction is associated with snail resistance against Schistosoma infection. In vitro data showed that most of the S. mansoni sporocysts cultured with haemocytes from Biomphalaria glabrata BH, a highly susceptible snail strain, had a low number of cells that adhered to their tegument and a low mortality rate. Moreover, the addition of N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (GlcNAc) did not alter this pattern of adherence and mortality. Using haemocytes and haemolymph of Biomphalaria tenagophila Cabo Frio, we observed a high percentage of sporocysts with adherent cells, but complete encapsulation was not detected. Low concentrations of GlcNAc increased haemocyte binding to the sporocysts and mortality, which returned to basal levels with high concentrations of the carbohydrate. In contrast, haemocytes plus haemolymph from B. tenagophila Taim encapsulated cellular adhesion index of level 3 and destroyed over 30% of the S. mansoni sporocysts in culture. Interestingly, the addition of GlcNAc, but not mannose, to the culture medium resulted in the significant inhibition of cellular adhesion to the parasite tegument and the reduction of parasite mortality, suggesting that GlcNAc carbohydrate moieties are important to the recognition of S. mansoni by B. tenagophila Taim.

Muitos autores estudaram as modificações funcionais e físicas em indivíduos pós-acidente vascular cerebral; porém, poucos estudos avaliam alterações no hemicorpo não plégico de indivíduos hemiplégicos. O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar a atividade eletromiográfica nos músculos do antebraço de pacientes espásticos e indivíduos clinicamente saudáveis, para averiguar se há diferença entre o lado não plégico de indivíduos hemiplégicos e o lado dominante de indivíduos clinicamente saudáveis. 22 indivíduos hemiplégicos e 15 clinicamente saudáveis foram submetidos à eletromiografia dos músculos flexor e extensor ulnar do carpo durante a flexão e extensão do punho. A ativação dos músculos flexores dos hemiplégicos (média: 464,6 u.n), foi significantemente maior que nos indivíduos do grupo controle (média: 106,3 u.n) durante o movimento de flexão do punho, o que demonstra que o hemicorpo não acometido dos pacientes estudados não apresenta o comportamento padrão de normalidade encontrado no grupo controle.

Many authors have studied physical and functional changes in individuals post-stroke, but there are few studies that assess changes in the non-plegic side of hemiplegic subjects. This study aimed to compare the electromyographic activity in the forearm muscles of spastic patients and clinically healthy individuals, to determine if there is difference between the non-plegic side of hemiplegics and the dominant member of normal individuals. 22 hemiplegic subjects and 15 clinically healthy subjects were submitted to electromyography of the flexor and extensor carpi ulnaris muscles during wrist flexion and extension. The flexor muscles activation of stroke group (average 464.6 u.n) was significantly higher than the same muscles in control group (mean: 106.3 u.n.) during the wrist flexion, what shows that the non affected side does not present activation in the standart of normality found in the control group.
