ABSTRACT Chronic kidney disease (CKD) represents one of today’s main public health problems. Serum creatinine measurement and estimation of the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) are the main tools for evaluating renal function. There are several equations to estimate GFR, and CKD-EPI equation (Chronic Kidney Disease – Epidemiology) is the most recommended one. There are still some controversies regarding serum creatinine measurement and GFR estimation, since several factors can interfere in this process. An important recent change was the removal of the correction for race from the equations for estimating GFR, which overestimated kidney function, and consequently delayed the implementation of treatments such as dialysis and kidney transplantation. In this consensus document from the Brazilian Societies of Nephrology and Clinical Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, the main concepts related to the assessment of renal function are reviewed, as well as possible existing controversies and recommendations for estimating GFR in clinical practice. Abstract To date, hydroxyurea is the only effective and safe drug that significantly reduces morbidity and mortality of individuals with Sickle cell disease. Twenty years of real-life experience has demonstrated that hydroxyurea reduces pain attacks, vaso-occlusive events, including acute chest syndrome, the number and duration of hospitalizations and the need for transfusion. The therapeutic success of hydroxyurea is directly linked to access to the drug, the dose used and adherence to treatment which, in part, is correlated to the availability of hydroxyurea. This consensus aims to reduce the number of mandatory exams needed to access the drug, prioritizing the requesting physician's report, without affecting patient safety. date disease reallife real life attacks vasoocclusive vaso occlusive events syndrome transfusion which part physicians physician s report safety

ABSTRACT Objective To evaluate food consumption, risk behavior for eating disorders and perception of body image in adolescents who practice judo. Methods Cross-sectional study with adolescents practicing judo, participants of the Paraná Federation of Judo. For data collection, an online questionnaire was used, containing questions related to characterization and anthropometric data, the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) instruments to assess body image perception, the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26) to identify behaviors risk factors for eating disorders and the 24-hour food recall to assess food intake. Dissatisfaction with body weight was obtained by reporting those who would like to gain or lose weight. Results 57 judokas of both sexes participated, mostly male (54.3%; n=31). Absence of risk behavior for eating disorders (63.1%; n=36) and dissatisfaction with body image (75.4%; n=43) were prevalent among judokas. Among the adolescents who were dissatisfied with their body image (36.8%; n=14), it was observed that 9 (15.78%) also showed risky eating behavior for eating disorders by the EAT-26 test (p=0.002). There was an association between dissatisfaction with weight and risk behavior for ED (p=0.034), represented by positive EAT for 26.31% (n=15) of adolescents. Insufficient food intake values of energy and carbohydrates, as well as high protein consumption, and inadequate intake for the largest of micronutrients were identified. Conclusion Most athletes did not present risk behavior for ED and were satisfied with their body image. Among those classified as dissatisfied with their body image, the degrees identified are mostly mild to moderate. The analysis of food consumption showed inadequacy for most of the nutrients evaluated, emphasizing the importance of food and nutrition education actions aimed at this public. judo Crosssectional Cross sectional Judo collection used BSQ (BSQ EAT26 26 (EAT-26 24hour hour 24 5 participated 54.3% 543 54 3 (54.3% n=31. n31 n n=31 . 31 n=31) 63.1% 631 63 1 (63.1% n=36 n36 36 75.4% 754 75 4 (75.4% n=43 n43 43 36.8% 368 8 (36.8% n=14, n14 n=14 , 14 n=14) 15.78% 1578 15 78 (15.78% EAT-2 p=0.002. p0002 p p=0.002 0 002 (p=0.002) p=0.034, p0034 p=0.034 034 (p=0.034) 2631 26.31 n=15 n15 (n=15 carbohydrates moderate evaluated public EAT2 2 (EAT-2 54.3 (54.3 n3 n=3 63.1 6 (63.1 75.4 7 (75.4 n=4 n4 36.8 (36.8 n1 n=1 15.78 157 (15.78 EAT- p000 p=0.00 00 (p=0.002 p003 p=0.03 03 (p=0.034 263 26.3 (n=1 (EAT- 54. BACKGROUND Although blood transfusion is an essential therapeutic procedure, it can present risks, including transmitting infectious diseases, such as malaria. In Acre, the thick blood smear microscopic examination (TBS) is used to screen infected malaria blood donors. However, TBS has low sensitivity for detecting Plasmodium in situations of low parasitaemia, such as those presented by asymptomatic clinically healthy individuals. OBJECTIVES To investigate the pertinence of using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect malarial infection for screening blood donors in Cruzeiro do Sul, Acre, an endemic high-risk malaria area in the Legal Amazon. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted among individuals eligible and ineligible to be blood donors, according to clinical and epidemiological criteria. Besides the mandatory screening of HCV, HBV, and HIV tests, malaria PCR and TBS were also carried out on all blood donor candidates who attended the Cruzeiro do Sul Blood Centre from July to September 2022. FINDINGS Of the 230 participants, 209 (91%) were eligible for blood donation by clinical-epidemiological screening. Surprisingly, no blood donor candidate reported a history of malaria. All TBS microscopic tests were negative at the time of recruitment. However, samples from four blood donor candidates (two eligible by clinical and epidemiological malaria criteria and two ineligible by hypertension and recent tattoo) were positive by Plasmodium and P. vivax molecular tests. MAIN CONCLUSIONS Malaria molecular techniques for screening blood donors should be introduced in the Brazilian Blood Centres to maximise recipient safety. Furthermore, selecting zero-risk donors could pave the way to build a transmissible malaria-free environment in the blood bank context in the near future. procedure risks diseases Acre (TBS However parasitaemia (PCR highrisk high risk Amazon crosssectional cross sectional HCV HBV 2022 23 participants 20 91% 91 (91% clinicalepidemiological Surprisingly recruitment tattoo P safety Furthermore zerorisk zero malariafree free future 202 2 9 (91 (9 (

ABSTRACT Objective Currently programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) inhibitors in combination with other therapies are being evaluated to determine their efficacy in cancer treatment. However, the effect of PD-ligand (L) 1 expression on disease outcomes in stage III (EC III) non-small cell lung cancer is not completely understood. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the influence of PD-L1 expression on the outcomes of EC III non-small cell lung cancer. Methods This study was conducted on patients diagnosed with EC III non-small cell lung cancer who underwent treatment at a tertiary care hospital. PD-L1 expression was determined using immunohistochemical staining, all patients expressed PD-L1. Survival was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. Relationships between variables were assessed using Cox proportional regression models. Results A total of 49 patients (median age=69 years) with EC III non-small cell lung cancer and PD-L1 expression were evaluated. More than half of the patients were men, and most were regular smokers. The patients were treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy, surgery, or sequential or combined chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The median progression-free survival of the entire cohort was 14.2 months, and the median overall survival was 20 months. There was no significant association between PD-L1 expression and disease progression, clinical characteristics, or overall survival. Conclusions PD-L1 expression was not correlated with EC III non-small cell lung cancer outcomes. Whether these findings differ from the association with immune checkpoint inhibitors remains to be addressed in future studies. ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others. publications problem uptodate up date classifications context exception (CTFB http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/, httpfaunajbrjgovbr http //fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ , jbrj gov br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/) 2015 Brazil 80 specialists 1 2024 133691 133 691 133,69 125138 125 138 125,13 82.3%, 823 82 3 (82.3% 102000 102 000 102,00 7.69%, 769 7 69 (7.69% 11000 11 11,00 . 3,567 3567 567 (3,56 2,292 2292 2 292 (2,29 1,833 1833 833 (1,83 1,447 1447 447 (1,44 1000 1,00 831 (83 628 (62 606 (60 520 (52 50 users science health biology law anthropology education others http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ faunajbrjgovbr //fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ 201 8 202 13369 13 133,6 12513 12 125,1 82.3% (82.3 10200 10 00 102,0 7.69% 76 6 (7.69 1100 11,0 3,56 356 56 (3,5 2,29 229 29 (2,2 1,83 183 83 (1,8 1,44 144 44 (1,4 100 1,0 (8 62 (6 60 52 (5 5 http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br 20 1336 133, 1251 125, 82.3 (82. 1020 0 102, 7.69 (7.6 110 11, 3,5 35 (3, 2,2 22 (2, 1,8 18 (1, 1,4 14 4 ( 82. Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects and economic viability of diets containing different levels of antibiotic and buriti oil (BO) on performance, carcass and cut yields, and relative weight of organs of broilers. A total of 432 one- to 42-day-old male chicks were distributed in a completely randomized experimental design with six treatments, each consisting of six replicates of 12 birds. The treatments consisted of one diet with antibiotic without BO, one diet without antibiotic (DWA) without BO, and four DWA containing increasing levels of BO (0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8%). Average weight and weight gain (WG) of broilers fed with DWA + BO were similar to those of birds fed control diet. Feed intake and feed conversion (FC) were not different among treatments. Relative weight of pancreas linearly increased in the birds fed diets containing BO. The inclusion of 0.45 and 0.40% of BO in the diets promoted the improvement of WG and FC, respectively. Cost of feed management, ratio, gross margin, and gross income did not differ among treatments. It was concluded that the inclusion of 0.45% of BO in diets without antibiotics is economically feasible and allows recovering the performance of broilers. ABSTRACT Objective: To assess the temperature variation of gutta-percha removal with stainless steel and two NiTi instruments using infrared thermography and thermocouples. Material and Methods: 45 single-rooted teeth were divided into three groups (n = 15) according to the following gutta-percha removal instruments: Largo Peeso (L), Protaper Retreatment (PR), and Reciproc (R). Thermal analysis was conducted using a FLIR T650sc infrared thermography camera and three thermocouples. For infrared thermography assessment, the infrared camera was programmed to acquire thermograms every 15 seconds before the gutta-percha removal started until temperature normalization. Root temperature was assessed in the thermograms using FLIR tools software v6.4 with the straight-line tool along the long axis of the tooth and in the cervical, middle, and apical thirds of each tooth. The temperature from the thermocouples was recorded and registered for each root third. Inferential statistical analysis Kruskal-Wallis and post hoc Tukey tests were used. Results: For the infrared thermography camera, the highest median temperature value was found 15 seconds after guttapercha removal for the L technique (20.3°C), which presented the highest temperatures at all studied times. For thermocouples, the highest temperature was found in the middle third during gutta-percha removal with L (20.7°C). PR and R presented similar patterns of root temperature. ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze the performance of the Color and Snellen Tests in Brazil. Methods: This descriptive and retrospective epidemiological study employs a quantitative approach to analyze data obtained via TABNET regarding the "Color Vision Test" and the "Visual Acuity Potential Assessment" over the last five years, focusing on school-aged children. Results: 26,374 tests were conducted, predominantly in the southern region of Brazil, although some states did not present data. There is a triple frequency in the use of the Snellen Test, with a total of 78,600 applications, with the Southeast region being the most productive. Conclusion: The analysis revealed an uneven screening performance for dyschromatopsia and low visual acuity in the national territory, indicating possible biases in the interpretation of the difficulties in carrying out the tests or in underreporting the procedures. It is also observed that the Snellen Test is performed three times more frequently than the Ishihara Test, raising concerns regarding the late diagnosis of dyschromatopsias. Abstract In the pediatric population, complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a challenging condition that leads to chronic psychosocial dysfunction. This case is of a 12-year-old male patient, 50 kg, who, after twisting his right ankle, started to present intense pain. Without adequate diagnosis and treatment, his family sought a pain specialist. During the evaluation, a change in sensitivity and temperature was observed, besides hyperalgesia, allodynia, redness, edema, and motor dysfunction, being diagnosed with CRPS. Ultrasound-guided sciatic blocks were performed on the affected limb, increasing the interval between crises, reducing pain intensity, and promoting a return to daily activities. population CRPS (CRPS dysfunction 12yearold yearold 12 year old patient 5 kg who ankle treatment specialist evaluation observed hyperalgesia allodynia redness edema Ultrasoundguided Ultrasound guided limb crises intensity activities 1

ABSTRACT Paracoccidioidomycosis, the most important systemic mycosis in Latin America, is closely linked to rural activities. In Brazil, it is an endemic disease, with an estimated 4,000 to 6,000 annual cases, accounting for over 80% of the global diagnoses. We present an intriguing case of this disease with an intestinal manifestation in a 71-year-old woman. The involvement of the cecal appendix led to a complication of cholangitis that mimicked cholangiocarcinoma.
