This study aimed to employ bibliometric methodologies to provide an overview of silver nanoparticles used as antimicrobial agents over the past decade. According to research conducted using the Scopus and Web of Science databases, a total of 2504 articles were published globally, of which 109 were from Brazilian institutions. Notably, approximately 70% of the leading article-producing countries are in Asia, with India emerging as the primary contributor with 1892 articles. Brazil ranked sixth in terms of publication volume, contributing 366 articles. Predominantly, the Southeastern region of Brazil exhibited the highest publication output, constituting 61% of the total, with the state of São Paulo playing a central role. Despite a gradual increase in the number of publications, most studies focused on synthesis methodologies, mainly producing aqueous silver nanoparticle solutions and their correlation with antimicrobial applications. The scarcity of publications addressing their efficacy in final commercialized products poses challenges for regulatory actions, quality control, and sanitary surveillance. This study highlights the synthesis of innovative polyurethane materials derived from Moringa oleifera oils extracted from two distinct sources. The oils were converted into their respective polyols through the in situ generated performic acid method. Diverse material characteristics were observed due to different agroclimatic and cultivation conditions for the sources. Extraction yields were 45.21% (source 1) and 40.32% (source 2), with acid values of 28.70 and 26.00 mg KOH per g of oil, respectively. Oleic acid constituted 79.87 and 67.11% of the oils composition, respectively. Nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed the hydroxylation of the oils. FTIR also identified the isocyanate structures in the synthesized polyurethane materials. Gel permeation chromatography analysis revealed a higher oligomer content in the polyol synthesized from the oil extracted from source 2. Thermogravimetric analysis demonstrated enhanced thermal stability post-oil conversion, highlighting decomposition stages for rigid and flexible segments. Differential scanning calorimetry indicated higher unsaturation in the oil extracted from source 1, resulting in an elevated crystallization temperature. RESUMO Vários estudos etnobotânicos destacaram a importância da ameixa amarela como espécie vegetal útil no Nordeste brasileiro. Para domesticar e incorporar uma espécie nativa em sistemas produtivos é necessário obter informações sobre seu desenvolvimento e variação genética. Este trabalho teve como objetivo analisar a variabilidade genética de indivíduos de X. americana, acessada por marcadores moleculares amplificados ao acaso (RAPD). Foram utilizados 26 genótipos de X. americana, coletados na reserva particular Fazenda Canto das Emas, na cidade de Caturité, estado da Paraíba, Brasil. Por meio da técnica RAPD, foi possível avaliar as diferenças genéticas entre genótipos nativos em uma população de ameixa silvestre. Baseado no coeficiente de dissimilaridade de Sokas e Rohlf, foi possível formar quatro grupos distintos pelo método UPGMA. O coeficiente de correlação cofenética foi de 0,83, revelando variabilidade na consistência do padrão de agrupamento. Os genótipos de X. americana apresentam diversidade genética detectada por marcadores RAPD, que têm se mostrado eficientes na caracterização de indivíduos. ABSTRACT Several ethnobotanical studies highlighted the importance of yellow plum as a useful plant species in the Brazilian Northeast region. In order to domesticate and incorporate a native species in production systems it is necessary to obtain information on its development and genetic variation. This work aimed to analyze the genetic variability of individuals of X. americana, accessed by Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) molecular markers. 26 genotypes of X. americana, randomly collected at the private reserve Campo das Emas Farm located in the Caturité City, Paraíba State, Brazil, were used in the study. Through the RAPD technique it was possible to assess the genetic variations among native genotypes within a wild plum population. Based on Sokal and Rohlf dissimilarity coefficient it was possible to form four distinct groups using the UPGMA method. The Cophenetic Correlation Coefficient was 0.83, revealing variability in the consistency of the cluster pattern. Resumo: A compreensão de como as crenças, perceções ou (des)informações dos indivíduos interagem com outros processos na moldagem do envolvimento dos indivíduos é de grande importância nas sociedades contemporâneas. Durante o confinamento da COVID-19, os adolescentes foram expostos a uma enorme quantidade de informação através de vários canais. As perceções, crenças e representações formuladas, inclusive sobre as causas da COVID-19, influenciam as experiências e o funcionamento subjetivos. O objetivo deste estudo foi examinar o papel que as perceções e crenças dos adolescentes sobre a COVID-19 desempenharam nas associações entre bem-estar, satisfação com as necessidades psicológicas básicas e envolvimento com o desenvolvimento sustentável. Um total de 1.649 adolescentes (51,2% sexo feminino) participaram em duas fases de recolha de dados (antes da COVID-19 e durante o confinamento da COVID-19). Os resultados mostraram que (1) o bem-estar esteve positivamente associado ao envolvimento dos adolescentes com o desenvolvimento sustentável, (2) a satisfação com as necessidades psicológicas básicas também esteve positivamente associada ao envolvimento com o desenvolvimento sustentável, e (3) a satisfação com as necessidades psicológicas básicas mediou a associação entre o bem-estar e o envolvimento com o desenvolvimento sustentável. No entanto, e o resultado mais significativo deste estudo, a perceção dos adolescentes de que a COVID-19 é uma consequência da interação entre o Ser Humano - Natureza mudou a direção dessas associações. Estes resultados são consistentes com a investigação sobre desinformação e enviesamentos cognitivos: em adolescentes que entendiam a COVID-19 como sendo um fenómeno natural, resultante da interação entre o Ser Humano - Natureza, o seu envolvimento com o desenvolvimento sustentável era menos dependente do seu bem-estar subjetivo e da satisfação com as necessidades psicológicas básicas. Estes resultados têm implicações importantes para a investigação, para as práticas e políticas educativas e para a Comunicação e Mensagens relacionadas com a Saúde.

Abstract: The understanding of how individuals’ beliefs, perceptions or (mis)information interact with other processes in shaping individuals’ engagement is of great important in contemporary societies. During the COVID-19 lockdown, adolescents were exposed to a huge amount of information through various channels. The formulated perceptions, beliefs and representations, including about the causes of the COVID-19, influence subjective experiences and functioning. This study aimed to examine the role that adolescents’ perceptions and beliefs about COVID-19 played in the associations among well-being, satisfaction of basic psychological needs, and engagement with sustainable development. In total, 1.649 adolescents (51.2% girls) participated in two waves of data collection (before COVID-19 and during COVID-19 lockdown). The results showed that (1) well-being was positively associated with adolescent engagement with sustainable development, (2) satisfaction of basic psychological needs was also positively associated with engagement with sustainable development, and (3) satisfaction of basic psychological needs mediated the association between well-being and engagement with sustainable development. However, and the most significant result from this study, adolescents’ perceptions of COVID-19 being a consequence of human-environment changed the direction of those associations. These results are consistent with research on misinformation and cognitive biases: in adolescents who had an understanding of COVID-19 as being a natural phenomenon, resulting from human-nature interaction, their engagement with sustainable development was less dependent on their subjective well-being and on their satisfaction of basic psychological needs. These results have important implications research, political and educational practices and for Health-related Communication and Messages.

RESUMO Evitar a ocorrência de eventos hidrológicos extremos ultrapassa as habilidades atuais da humanidade. Todavia, a utilização de ferramentas adequadas para estimar a probabilidade associada a diferentes valores de variáveis hidrológicas, a exemplo das chuvas intensas, pode auxiliar na atenuação dos danos sociais e ambientais. O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar a hipótese de que os registros de chuvas máximas, em diferentes intervalores de duração, nas três principais estações pluviométricas do estado do Acre, ajustam-se à distribuição log-normal de dois parâmetros (LN2) e, com isso, avaliar os eventos de chuvas intensas, com base na associação entre a duração da chuva e o período de retorno. As equações foram conformadas ao modelo clássico do modelo LN2 pelo método da máxima verossimilhança, uma vez atendido o pressuposto basal da estacionariedade pelo teste de Mann-Kendall. A aderência ao modelo foi verificada por meio teste de Anderson-Darling. ABSTRACT Preventing the occurrence of extreme hydrological events exceeds the current abilities of humanity. However, using adequate tools to estimate the probability associated with different values of hydrological variables, such as heavy rainfall, can help mitigate social and environmental damage. This study aimed to verify the hypothesis that the records of maximum rainfall, at different intervals of duration, in the three main rainfall stations in the state of Acre fit the log-normal distribution of two parameters (LN2) and, therefore, to evaluate the events of heavy rainfalls, based on the association between the duration of the rain and the return period. Resumo: O cuidado de um filho com deficiência visual pode vir a afetar a renda do cuidador e, por sua vez, a renda da família. Sob essa realidade, há de se considerar o gasto catastrófico consequente do aumento de despesas e da redução de renda, seja pelo desemprego, pela redução do número de horas trabalhadas ou pela dificuldade de (re)inserção no mercado de trabalho. Perante esse cenário, o objetivo principal deste estudo foi estimar o gasto catastrófico atribuído ao cuidador de crianças cegas ou com baixa visão em centros de referência em educação para cegos, oftalmologia e saúde infantil localizados no Município do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, identificando quais fatores estão associados a uma maior ou menor prevalência desse gasto. Observou-se que 53,3% dos cuidados de crianças com cegueira comprometem 40% ou mais da renda. Entre os cuidadores de crianças com baixa visão, o gasto catastrófico é mais ameno, comprometendo no mínimo 40% da renda para 36,8% dos cuidadores. Os fatores associados à maior prevalência de gasto catastrófico foram idade do cuidador, número de moradores na residência, maior escolaridade, menor renda domiciliar, reformas na residência, plano de saúde, aquisição de empréstimos, venda de bens, quantidade de unidades de saúde que a criança recebe tratamento e parentesco do cuidador principal. A carga que recai sobre os cuidadores de crianças com deficiência visual indica uma situação de vulnerabilidade que mostra a necessidade de acesso aos mecanismos de proteção financeira e social, por meio de políticas que sejam capazes de atender esse grupo.

Resumen: El cuidado de un niño con discapacidad visual puede impactar los ingresos del cuidador y, a su vez, de la familia. En este escenario, es necesario considerar el gasto catastrófico resultante del aumento de los gastos o la reducción de los ingresos, ya sea por desempleo, reducción del número de horas trabajadas o por la dificultad de inserción o reinserción en el mercado laboral. Ante esto, el objetivo principal de este estudio fue estimar el gasto catastrófico atribuido al cuidador de niños ciegos o con baja visión en centros de referencia en educación para ciegos, oftalmología y salud infantil, ubicados en el municipio de Río de Janeiro, Brasil, con el fin de identificar qué factores se asocian con una mayor o menor prevalencia de este gasto. Se observó que el 53,3% de los cuidados de niños con discapacidad visual comprometen más del 40% de los ingresos totales. Mientras tanto, el cuidado de niños con baja visión tiene un menor gasto catastrófico, comprometiendo menos del 40% de los ingresos según el 36,8% de los cuidadores. La mayor prevalencia de gasto catastrófico estuvo asociada a los siguientes factores: edad del cuidador, número de residentes en el hogar, mayor nivel de estudios, bajos ingresos familiares, remodelaciones en el hogar, seguro de salud, adquisición de préstamos, venta de bienes, cantidad de centros de salud en las que el niño acude al tratamiento y parentesco del cuidador principal. Los cuidadores de niños con discapacidad visual enfrentan una situación de vulnerabilidad, lo que apunta a una necesidad de acceder a acciones de protección financiera y social mediante políticas dirigidas a esta población.

Abstract: Caring for a visually impaired child can affect the caregiver’s income and, in turn, the family’s. Catastrophic spending resulting from increased expenses and reduced income must be taken into account, whether due to unemployment, a reduction in the number of hours worked or the difficulty of entering or reentering the job market. Given this scenario, the main objective of this study was to estimate the catastrophic spending attributed to the caregiver of blind or low-vision children in reference centers for education for the blind, ophthalmology and child health located in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, identifying which factors are associated with a higher or lower prevalence of this expenditure. It was found that 53.3% of care for blind children involved 40% or more of their income. Among the caregivers of children with low vision, catastrophic spending is milder, compromising at least 40% of income for 36.8% of the caregivers. The factors associated with a higher prevalence of catastrophic spending were the caregiver’s age, the number of residents in the household, higher schooling, lower household income, renovations to the home, health insurance, taking out loans, selling assets, the number of health units where the child receives treatment and the relationship of the main caregiver. The burden placed on caregivers of visually impaired children indicates a situation of vulnerability that shows the need for access to financial and social protection mechanisms, through policies that are capable of serving this group.

RESUMO O peróxido de hidrogênio (H2O2) pode ser indicado como uma estratégia para mitigar o estresse salino em plantas, por isso o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os efeitos das concentrações e métodos de aplicação de H2O2 como mitigador do estresse salino sobre o crescimento, fisiologia e qualidade de mudas de maracujá cv. BRS Gigante Amarelo. O experimento foi conduzido em ambiente protegido (telado) pertencente a UFERSA, em Caraúbas - RN, Brasil, em delineamento em blocos casualizados e analisados em esquema fatorial 2 × 4 × 3, com quatro repetições e uma planta por parcela. Os tratamentos consistiram em: condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação - CEa (0,5 e 3,2 dS m-1); concentrações de H2O2 (0, 12, 24 e 36 μM); e métodos de aplicação de H2O2 (M1 = embebição das sementes, M2 = pulverização foliar e M3 = embebição das sementes + pulverização foliar). O aumento dos níveis de salinidade da água de irrigação afeta negativamente a qualidade das mudas. ABSTRACT Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) can be indicated as a strategy to mitigate salt stress in plants, so the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different concentrations and methods of application of H2O2 as a mitigator of salt stress on the growth, physiology, and quality of seedlings of yellow passion fruit. The experiment was carried out in a protected environment (screened) belonging to UFERSA, in Caraúbas - RN, Brazil, in a randomized block design and analyzed in a 2 × 4 × 3 factorial scheme, with four replications and one plant per plot. The treatments consisted of levels of electrical conductivity of irrigation water - ECw (0.5 and 3.2 dS m-1), H2O2 concentrations (0, 12, 24, and 36 μM), and H2O2 application methods (M1 = seed soaking, M2 = foliar spraying, and M3 = seed soaking + foliar spraying). ABSTRACT Tuberculosis stands as one of humanity’s oldest afflictions, intrinsically intertwined with social disparities. This formidable disease spares no age group and remains the prevailing cause of infection-induced mortality worldwide, particularly in developing nations. We present a case of a 56-year-old woman with diabetes who was diagnosed with Pulmonary Tuberculosis. After receiving antituberculosis drugs as part of her treatment, she experienced a range of systemic manifestations and suffered from severe ulcerative esophagitis. This adverse reaction led to uncontrollable gastrointestinal intolerance, tragically resulting in her untimely demise. Poly(oxazoline)s (POZs) are a “new” class of biocompatible polymers that show unique and specific properties for modern biomedical and biomaterials design applications. In this work, POZs-coupled hydroxyethyl starch nanocapsules were developed in order to create a powerful protein suppressor vehicle. Herein, POZs of different molecular weights were used to functionalize the well-known hydroxyethyl starch nanocapsules (HES) surface by metal free “click” chemistry, in which HES have also been related to immune suppressor property. For each modification step, the capsules were characterized regarding size, morphology and charge surface, and, as expected, the “click” strategy kept a core-shell structure with an average diameter distribution < 200 nm. Additionally, previous to the post-polymerization modification step, the amount of free amino groups was determined by fluorescence intensity, allowing further “click” coupling of the surface of the capsules with POZs, later confirmed by gel permeation chromatography. Protein corona evaluation and aggregation assays in human plasma showed lower protein attaching for POZ-modified HES nanocapsules, than HES modified with polyethylene glycol (“PEGylated”-HES) and unmodified HES. Indeed, around 35% of “hard” protein corona of POZ-modified HES are clusterins, the apolipoprotein that can reduce the non-specific cellular uptake into macrophages, indicating that POZs have stealth behavior similar to polyethylene glycol (PEG), being a potential alternative to “PEGylated”-based nanocarriers. Pure and cobalt-doped 3D ZnO were produced using the microwave (MW)-ultraviolet (UV)-visible (Vis) radiation-assisted hydrothermal method (MW-UV-Vis HM). Using experimental design, the effects of cobalt and UV-Vis radiation during the synthesis stage on the physicochemical properties of the materials were evaluated with different characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, diffuse reflectance, and electrochemistry. The presence of cobalt had a great influence on the reduction of charge donors in the ZnO matrix and had their photocatalytic properties improved when produced under the effect of UV-Vis radiation. The catalytic activity of the materials has been verified in important environmental remediation reactions, such as the electrochemical reduction of CO2 and the photocatalytic degradation of emerging pollutants. Resumo As infecções causadas por Candida spp. são frequentes em pacientes hospitalizados em estado crítico, especialmente entre neonatos prematuros, representando uma das infecções relacionadas à assistência à saúde mais comuns. Embora haja considerável produção de conhecimento atual sobre os mecanismos de resposta imune, os aspectos envolvidos na defesa inata do recém-nascido não são totalmente compreendidos. O objetivo deste estudo foi descrever os mecanismos imunes inatos envolvidos na defesa dos neonatos contra a candidíase invasiva. Trata-se de uma revisão integrativa da literatura a partir das bases de dados Scopus, Scifinder, Medline, Web of Science e nas bibliotecas eletrônicas ScienceDirect e Scielo, no período de 2002 a 2020, com resgate baseado no descritor primário “Imunidade Inata” e descritores secundários “Candidíase Invasiva” e “Recém-Nascido”. Observamos o envolvimento de vários mecanismos na resposta neonatal contra a candidíase invasiva, incluindo o reconhecimento, sinalização, recrutamento e início de uma resposta imune efetiva. Esses mecanismos englobam a presença de peptídeos antimicrobianos, fagocitose, síntese de espécies reativas de oxigênio, mediadores inflamatórios e sistemas complexos de sinalização celular mediados por Receptores de Reconhecimento de Padrões (PRRs). Abstract Infections caused by Candida spp. are frequent in critically hospitalized patients, especially among premature neonates, representing one of the most common healthcare-related infections. Although there is considerable production of current knowledge about the mechanisms of immune response, aspects involved in the newborn's innate defense are not fully understood. The aim of this study was to describe the innate immune mechanisms involved in the defense of neonates against invasive candidiasis. This is an integrative literature review from the Scopus, Scifinder, Medline, Web of Science databases and the electronic libraries ScienceDirect and Scielo, in the period between 2002 and 2020, with rescue based on primary descriptor Immunity Innate plus secondary descriptors Candidiasis Invasive AND Infant Newborn. We have observed the involvement of various mechanisms in the neonatal response against invasive candidiasis, including the recognition, signaling, recruitment, and initiation of an effective immune response. Abstract Although control of Covid-19 has improved, the virus continues to cause infections, such as tuberculosis, that is still endemic in many countries, representing a scenario of coinfection. To compare Covid-19 clinical manifestations and outcomes between patients with active tuberculosis infection and matched controls. This is a matched case-control study based on data from the Brazilian Covid-19 Registry, in hospitalized patients aged 18 or over with laboratory confirmed Covid-19 from March 1, 2020, to March 31, 2022. Cases were patients with tuberculosis and controls were Covid-19 patients without tuberculosis. From 13,636 Covid-19, 36 also had active tuberculosis (0.0026%). Pulmonary fibrosis (5.6% vs 0.0%), illicit drug abuse (30.6% vs 3.0%), alcoholism (33.3% vs 11.9%) and smoking (50.0% vs 9.7%) were more common among patients with tuberculosis. They also had a higher frequency of nausea and vomiting (25.0% vs 10.4%). There were no significant differences in in-hospital mortality, mechanical ventilation, need for dialysis and ICU stay. Patients with TB infection presented a higher frequency of pulmonary fibrosis, abuse of illicit drugs, alcoholism, current smoking, symptoms of nausea and vomiting. The outcomes were similar between them. This study aimed to establish the longitudinal gradient and historical trends of arsenic and metals in a tropical reservoir. Water and sediment samples were collected along the Rio Bonito reservoir (Espírito Santo, Brazil), and a sediment core was obtained from the lacustrine zone. Plasma spectrometric techniques were employed to determine concentrations of As, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, and Pb in water and sediment samples, and the sediment samples were dated using high-resolution gamma spectrometry. Higher concentrations of elements were observed in surface water samples from the riverine zone and bottom water samples from the transition zone. Concerning surface sediment samples, elevated concentrations were noted in the transition and lacustrine zones, where deposition is more intense. The sediment core was dated to 1940, before the reservoir dam construction, utilizing 210Pb dating. Certain elements exhibited progressively increasing concentrations over time. Resumo Uma lista de peixes recentes e fósseis da Ordem Characiformes é apresentada e acredita-se que a lista esteja completa até 2022. Ao todo, 47 colaboradores verificaram e forneceram informações sobre táxons de sua especialidade. A lista está organizada em ordem alfabética por família e em seguida gênero e inclui todos os sinônimos disponíveis. De um total de 3.087 nomes de grupos de espécies e 527 nomes de grupos de gêneros, 2.334 espécies são atualmente tratadas como válidas e atribuídas a 301 gêneros e 24 famílias. Este total inclui 25 espécies fósseis, das quais 21 são incluídas em oito famílias recentes e quatro são Incertae sedis em Characiformes, mas não inclui cinco espécies baseadas em fósseis que foram incorretamente consideradas como Characiformes. O status de 79 espécies nominais permanece não resolvido. Quando há duas hipóteses concorrentes sobre a validade de um nome, uma delas é escolhida e a interpretação alternativa é fornecida na seção de comentários do nome em questão. Dados sobre distribuição geográfica são apresentados através de números que correspondem a regiões para as quais há registro de ocorrência da espécie. Abstract A checklist of recent and fossil fishes of the Order Characiformes is presented herein and believed to be complete through 2022. A total of 47 collaborators checked and provided information about their taxa of expertise. The list is arranged in alphabetical order by family and then genus and includes all available synonyms. From a total of 3,087 species group names and 527 genus group names, 2,334 species are currently treated as valid, and assigned to 301 genera and 24 families. This total includes 25 species known only from the fossil record, of which 21 are assigned to eight extant families and four are Incertae sedis in Characiformes, but does not include five species based on fossil which were wrongly treated in Characiformes. The status of 79 nominal species remains unresolved. When there are two competing hypotheses about the validity of a name, one of them is chosen and the alternate interpretation is provided in the remark section of that name. Distributional summaries are presented as numbers that correspond to areas for which there is a record of occurrence of the species.
