Resumo O investimento estrangeiro direto (IED) tem sido visto pela literatura como um fator influente na evolução tecnológica dos ecossistemas de inovação dos países anfitriões, com várias nações em desenvolvimento, como o Brasil, buscando atrair IED para potencializar seu desenvolvimento por meio da produção inovadora. Entretanto, as evidências sobre se o IED configura uma fonte de influência positiva ou negativa sobre as capacidades regionais de inovação são variadas. Além disso, apesar da existência de estudos sobre economias emergentes, há uma lacuna quando se trata do nível regional no Brasil. Pretendemos contribuir com a literatura examinando se as empresas multinacionais (EMNs) regionais induzem inovações de alta ou baixa intensidade nesse último contexto. Assim, este estudo visa a complementar as investigações acadêmicas, analisando a influência das EMNs na intensidade da inovação regional no Brasil, no estado de São Paulo, usando um banco de dados exclusivo de IDE em nível regional em um painel que vai de 2010 a 2016. Os resultados mostraram um impacto positivo de FDI e capacidade empresarial de absorção de tecnologias na inovação de alta intensidade, efeito que não se repetiu para a de baixa intensidade. Abstract Foreign direct investment (FDI) has been seen by the literature as an influential factor in the technological evolution of host countries' innovation ecosystems, where several developing nations, such as Brazil, aim to attract FDI to potentialize their development through innovative output. However, the evidence on whether FDI configures a source of positive or negative influence on regional innovation capabilities is mixed. Furthermore, despite the existence of studies regarding emerging economies, there is a gap when it comes to the regional level in Brazil. We intend to contribute to the literature by examining whether multinational enterprises (MNEs) induce high or low-intensity innovations regionally in this last context. Thus, this study aims to complement academic investigations by analyzing the influence of MNEs on regional innovation intensity in Brazil in the state of São Paulo using a unique regional-level FDI database in a panel ranging from 2010 to 2016. FDI and AC demonstrated a positive effect on high-intensity innovation, specifically invention patents, with no observable influence on low-intensity innovation, such as utility models and certificates of addition. Resumo Objetivo: Este trabalho teve como objetivo averiguar como as empresas do setor de energia elétrica realizam a escolha do nível de alavancagem financeira e maturidade das dívidas, com o intuito de amenizar o problema de subinvestimento. Metodologia: Foi aplicada a técnica de regressão linear múltipla em um modelo de painel dinâmico para verificar a relevância dessas e outras variáveis para o nível de investimento praticado. Resultados: A variável explicativa de investimento realizado no ano anterior apresentou-se significativa nas regressões com o sinal positivo como esperado. A variável de alavancagem financeira manteve-se significativa e com o sinal negativo. Os investimentos realizados das empresas são negativamente relacionados ao endividamento. Contribuições: Identificou-se que a maturidade das dívidas de empresas com baixas oportunidades de crescimento apresenta uma relação negativa com o nível de investimento. Assim, no setor de energia elétrica, a redução da maturidade da dívida pode ser considerada um substituto da diminuição do endividamento no controle do subinvestimento. Pela relevância desse setor para a economia e pela necessidade de constantes investimentos no setor, compreender sua dinâmica de financiamentos é uma importante contribuição tanto para pesquisadores quanto para os gestores de tais empresas.

Abstract Purpose: This research aimed to verify how companies of the electric energy segment choose levels of financial leverage and debt maturity in order to alleviate the underinvestment problem. Design/methodology/approach: A multiple linear regression was carried out in a dynamic panel model to verify the relevance of these and other variables to the companies’ investments. Findings: The explanatory variable of investments carried out in the previous year was significant in the regressions, with a positive sign as expected. The financial leverage variable was significant and negative. The investments made by the companies are negatively related to indebtedness. Originality/value: It was identified that the maturity of debts of companies with low growth opportunities shows a negative relationship with the level of investment. Thus, in the electricity sector, reducing debt maturity can be considered as a substitute for reducing indebtedness in controlling underinvestment. Due to the relevance of this sector to the economy and the need for constant investments in it, understanding its financing dynamics provides an important contribution either to researchers or to managers of this industry.

Abstract Paper aims to analyze the international flow of students - both from developed and underdeveloped countries - and to observe their significance for the productivity gains of the country of origin of these students. Originality The main contributions to the literature are the understanding of how student flows affect countries' economic growth, as well as to verify the systematic differences between the contribution of international student flows to economic growth between developed and underdeveloped countries. Research method This empirical study performed using a data set of 87 countries, during 2001-2012 yields results that are in accordance with previous literature, supporting the hypothesis of international student flows as a significant channel of R&D spillovers from developed countries. The paper used econometric models already tested by previous studies. Main findings The results show that BRICS countries may benefit more than other countries from such internationalization initiatives. Implications for theory and practice The mobility of international students is currently an important political issue in the world. These formal or informal links between agents from diverse countries result in an exchange of ideas, experiences and knowledge potentially generating new business opportunities for developing economies.

Resumo O crescimento econômico não é o único fator que explica o desenvolvimento humano. Nesse aspecto, índices sobre a qualidade de vida têm sido recorrentes na literatura. Entretanto, esses índices não analisam como a complexidade econômica é convertida em desenvolvimento humano. O objetivo deste artigo é mensurar a eficiência de países latino-americanos e asiáticos na conversão de complexidade econômica em desenvolvimento humano, entre 2010 e 2014. O método utilizado foi o Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), por meio do Modelo de Retornos Variáveis à Escala (BCC) e Análise de Janela. Os resultados demonstraram que, em 2014, todos os países asiáticos foram eficientes, exceto China e Filipinas. Nesse ano, Cuba foi o país que mais serviu de benchmark para os países ineficientes. A análise em janela demonstrou que apenas Japão, Coréia do Sul e Singapura se mantiveram eficientes ao longo do tempo. Esse resultado confirma a hipótese inicial deste artigo: economias mais complexas são mais eficientes na geração de desenvolvimento humano.

Abstract Economic growth is not the only factor to explain human development. Therefore, many authors have prioritized studies to measure the Human Development Index. However, these indexes do not analyze how Economic Complexity can increase Human Development. This paper aimed to determine how efficiently nations from Latin America and Asia measure a country’s performance in converting Economic Complexity into Human Development, between 2010 and 2014. We used Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), through the Variable Returns of Scale (VRS) Model and Window Analysis. Results showed that in 2014, all Asian countries, except China and the Philippines, were efficient; on the other hand Cuba was the benchmark for inefficient countries. Window Analysis showed Japan, South Korea and Singapore were efficient over time. This result confirms the initial hypothesis of this article: the more complex countries are the more efficiently they create Human Development.

RESUMO Objetivos: explorar os fatores socioeconômicos, demográficos e psicossociais associados ao desempenho cognitivo em idosos cuidadores do Brasil. Métodos: Avaliamos 351 idosos cuidadores da atenção primária à saúde em relação a variáveis sociodemográficas e de contexto do cuidado. Os domínios da Escala Cognitiva de Addenbrooke Revisada (ACE-R) - orientação/atenção, memória, fluência verbal, linguagem e visuo-espacial - foram utilizados como variáveis dependentes no modelo de Tobit. Resultados: Alfabetização e renda familiar foram positivamente associados a todos os domínios ACE-R. A idade, o sexo, o tempo de atendimento (dias/semana) foram associados negativamente com alguns domínios cognitivos. Além disso, receber ajuda emocional e nível de esperança foram positivamente associados a domínios específicos. Discussão: os resultados podem ser úteis para o planejamento de intervenções voltadas para cuidadores idosos, a fim de prevenir déficits nos diferentes domínios cognitivos.

Abstract Objectives: To explore the socioeconomic, demographic and psychosocial factors associated with cognitive performance in elderly caregivers from Brazil. Methods: We evaluated 351 Brazilian elderly caregivers attending primary healthcare services regarding sociodemographic and care variables. Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination-Revised (ACE-R) domains of orientation/attention, memory, verbal fluency, language and visuospatial were used as dependent variables in the Tobit model. Results: Literacy and family income were positively associated with all ACE-R domains. Age, gender, time of care (days/week) were negatively associated with some cognitive domains. Moreover, receiving emotional help and the level of hope were positively associated with specific domains. Discussion: The results may be useful for planning interventions aimed at elderly caregivers in order to prevent deficits in the different cognitive domains.

Resumo A globalização tem sido responsável pela elevação da exposição de empresas e países a riscos relativos a fatores cambiais. A literatura tem abordado a questão da volatilidade da moeda em países emergentes e desenvolvidos sem um consenso sobre tal dinâmica, bem como são escassos os estudos que estimam e situam o risco do real brasileiro. Dessa forma, o presente estudo teve por objetivo mensurar o risco da taxa de câmbio brasileira, bem como testar a hipótese de que existe uma diferença significante na volatilidade entre moedas de países emergentes e em desenvolvimento. Por meio do VaR paramétrico ajustado para distribuições de valores extremos, observou-se que o real brasileiro apresentou taxa de câmbio de maior risco. Os resultados também revelam que os pressupostos distribucionais não parecem apresentar nenhum padrão específico quando confrontados países emergentes e desenvolvidos, e também que países emergentes apresentaram menor volatilidade, denotando a preponderância de fatores externos ao mercado cambial na determinação do risco de algumas moedas.

Abstract Globalization has been responsible for increasing exposure to risks related to currency factors for companies and countries. The literature has addressed the issue of currency volatility in emerging and developed countries without a consensus on such a dynamic and there are few studies that estimate and place the risk of the Brazilian real. Thus, this study aimed to measure the risk of the Brazilian exchange rate, as well as test the hypothesis that there is a significant difference in volatility between currencies of emerging and developing countries. Through the parametric VaR set to extreme values distributions, it was observed that the Brazilian real presented at greater risk of exchange rate. The results also showed that the distributional assumptions do not seem to have any specific pattern when faced emerging and developed countries and also emerging countries showed less volatility, reflecting the preponderance of factors external to the foreign exchange market in determining the risk of some currencies.

Abstract Paper aims to measure the impact of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and Absorptive Capacity (AC) on productivity in Brazil. Originality no articles were found using the AC as moderator of FDI in Brazil. Research method the Malmquist Index was employed and the Feasible Generalized Least Squares (FGLS) model was chosen, which has greater robustness for correcting the heterocedasticity and autocorrelation. Main findings productivity is more impacted by FDI than Economic Complexity. There is a two-year time lag to the impact of the FDI on productivity. The interaction between FDI and AC becomes positive only when experience and schooling are controlled. The number of PhD employees was better as proxy for AC than R&D workers. Implications for theory and practice there was no positive relationship between productivity and the number of higher education professionals.

Resumo O mundo está vivenciando uma profunda mudança climática, causada pela atividade predatória do homem, tendo em vista que as atividades econômicas foram exercidas sem preocupação com os impactos causados ao meio ambiente. Entretanto, na atualidade, percebe-se a necessidade de se expandir a economia atual sem comprometer os recursos necessários para a sobrevivência das futuras gerações. O uso intensivo de fontes alternativas de energia se configura uma contribuição a essa nova perspectiva de desenvolvimento. Em outra vertente, as principais técnicas de análise de viabilidade econômico-financeira são amplamente conhecidas, entretanto, a aplicação de técnicas que considerem o risco não é tão trivial. Assim, o presente trabalho aborda a seguinte questão: é possível analisar a viabilidade econômico-financeira de um potencial parque de geração de energia eólica em diferentes localidades do Brasil considerando o risco por meio das técnicas auxiliares de simulação de Monte Carlo e a distribuição Beta? Para responder tal questionamento, foram realizados testes considerando quatro diferentes localidades no Brasil, aplicando o método da Taxa Interna de Retorno (TIR) aliado às mencionadas técnicas auxiliares a fim de considerar o risco na análise de investimentos. Os resultados demonstraram a sensibilidade do projeto eólico à necessidade de financiamento para todas as regiões estudadas.

Abstract The world is experiencing a deep climate change caused by the predatory activity of man, due to the long time economic activities practiced without concerns on the environmental impacts. However, nowadays there is the necessity to expand the current economy without compromising the necessary resources for the survival of the future generations. The intensive use of alternative energy configures a contribution to this new development path. In another perspective, the main technical analysis of economic and financial feasibility is widely known; however, the application of techniques that consider the risk is not so usual. Thus, this current work addresses whether it is possible to identify the economic feasibility of a potential wind power generation plant in different Brazilian locations considering the risk of applying Monte Carlo simulation and Beta distribution techniques. In order to answer this question tests were performed in four different locations in Brazil, utilizing the Internal Rate of Return (IRR) method with the mentioned techniques to consider the risk in investment analysis. The results showed the sensitivity of the wind project to the financing costs, regardless the region studied.
