Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the contribution of oral and maxillofacial pathology laboratories (OMPLs) in Brazilian public universities to the diagnosis of lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). A cross-sectional study was performed using biopsy records from a consortium of sixteen public OMPLs from all regions of Brazil (North, Northeast, Central-West, Southeast, and South). Clinical and demographic data of patients diagnosed with lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCC between 2010 and 2019 were collected from the patients’ histopathological records. Of the 120,010 oral and maxillofacial biopsies (2010-2019), 6.9% (8,321 cases) were diagnosed as lip (0.8%, 951 cases), oral cavity (4.9%, 5,971 cases), and oropharyngeal (1.2%, 1,399 cases) SCCs. Most cases were from Brazil’s Southeast (64.5%), where six of the OMPLs analyzed are located. The predominant profile of patients with lip and oral cavity SCC was Caucasian men, with a mean age over 60 years, low schooling level, and a previous history of heavy tobacco consumption. In the oropharyngeal group, the majority were non-Caucasian men, with a mean age under 60 years, had a low education level, and were former/current tobacco and alcohol users. According to data from the Brazilian National Cancer Institute, approximately 9.9% of the total lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCCs reported over the last decade in Brazil may have been diagnosed at the OMPLs included in the current study. Therefore, this data confirms the contribution of public OMPLs with respect to the important diagnostic support they provide to the oral healthcare services extended by the Brazilian Public Health System.

RESUMO Objetivo Analisar a validade de conteúdo e de construto de sinais enunciativos de aquisição da linguagem para crianças de 13 a 24 meses. Método Os sinais criados foram submetidos à avaliação de clareza e pertinência por seis juízes experts em aquisição da linguagem na perspectiva enunciativa. A partir do seu julgamento foi produzida uma versão experimental que foi aplicada na análise de vídeos de interações mãe-bebê/examinador, com duração de 15 minutos, de 77 díades mãe-bebê na faixa etária de 13 a 18 meses e 89 díades na faixa etária de 19 a 24 meses. A validação de fidedignidade e consistência interna foi realizada pela análise de 10% da mostra por dois juízes fonoaudiólogos. A validação do construto foi realiza pela análise fatorial efetivada sobre a amostra total. Os dados foram analisados no Statistica 9.1 e PASW 17.0. Resultados Todos os sinais foram considerados claros e pertinentes pelos juízes experts. A análise de fidedignidade apontou a concordância quase perfeita (0,8 ≤ Kappa ≥ 1,0) para a maior parte dos sinais. A consistência interna para a Fase 3 apresentou alpha=0,771 considerada alta e Fase 4 apresentou alpha=0,917 limítrofe a muita alta. A análise fatorial da fase 3 revelou 2 fatores, explicando 59,1% da variância total e a fase 4 revelou 1 fator, explicando 75,7%. Conclusão Observou-se validade de conteúdo e de construto para cinco dos doze sinais na Fase 3 e para todos sinais na fase 4.

ABSTRACT Purpose To analyze the content and construct validity of enunciative signs of language acquisition for children aged 13 to 24 months. Methods The signs created were subjected to an assessment of clarity and relevance by six expert judges in language acquisition from an enunciative perspective. Based on their judgment, an experimental version was produced that was applied to the analysis of videos of mother-baby / examiner interactions, lasting 15 minutes, of 77 mother-baby dyads aged 13 to 18 months and 89 dyads in the age range aged between 19 and 24 months. The validity of reliability and internal consistency was performed by analyzing 10% of the sample by two speech therapists. The construct validation was carried out by the factorial analysis carried out on the total sample. The data were analyzed in Statistica 9.1 and PASW 17.0. Results All signs were considered clear and relevant by the expert judges. The reliability analysis showed an almost perfect agreement (0.8 ≤ Kappa ≥ 1.0) for most signs. The internal consistency for Phase 3 showed alpha = 0.771 considered high and Phase 4 presented alpha = 0.917 bordering on very high. The factor analysis of phase 3 revealed 2 factors, explaining 59.1% of the total variance and phase 4 revealed 1 factor, explaining 75.7%. Conclusion Content and construct validity were observed for five of the twelve signs in Phase 3 and for all signs in Phase 4.

ABSTRACT Objective: to describe the risk factors that influence the self-injury behavior of adolescents assisted at a Psychosocial Care Center for Children and Adolescents, according to subjects’ own perceptions. Method: a descriptive, exploratory, qualitative study carried out through medical records and a focus group with 07 adolescents. The statements were submitted to thematic content analysis. Results: in the risk factors category, four subcategories emerged: Family adversity factors; Social contagion; Adverse life events; Personal characteristics. Conflicts, lack of support, drug use in the family, meeting someone who cuts themselves, social networks, religiosity, history of sexual violence and bullying were identified as risk factors that influence self-injury. Final Considerations: adolescents pointed out the need for prejudice-free dialogues in schools, in health and family devices, configuring protective factors to avoid this practice that comes from several negative events throughout life.

RESUMEN Objetivo: describir los factores de riesgo que influyen en la conducta de automutilación de adolescentes atendidos en un Centro de Atención Psicosocial para niños y adolescentes, según la percepción del propio sujeto. Método: estudio descriptivo, exploratorio con abordaje cualitativo, realizado a través de historias clínicas y un grupo focal con 07 adolescentes. Los testimonios fueron sometidos a análisis de contenido temático. Resultados: en la categoría Factores de riesgo surgieron cuatro subcategorías: Factores de adversidad familiar; Contagio social; Eventos de vida adversos; Características personales. Los conflictos, la falta de apoyo, el uso de drogas en la familia, el encuentro con alguien que se corta, las redes sociales, la religiosidad, un historial de violencia sexual y bullying fueron identificados como factores de riesgo que influyen en la autolesión. Consideraciones finales: los adolescentes señalaron la necesidad de diálogos libres de prejuicios en las escuelas, en los dispositivos de salud y familiares, configurando factores protectores para evitar esta práctica que proviene de varios eventos negativos a lo largo de la vida.

RESUMO Objetivo: descrever os fatores de risco que influenciam o comportamento da automutilação de adolescentes em atendimento em um Centro de Atenção Psicossocial Infantojuvenil, na percepção do próprio sujeito. Método: estudo descritivo, exploratório, de abordagem qualitativa, realizado por meio de prontuários e grupo focal com 07 adolescentes. Os depoimentos foram submetidos à análise temática de conteúdo. Resultados: na categoria Fatores de risco, surgiram quatro subcategorias: Fatores de adversidade familiar; Contágio social; Acontecimentos adversos de vida; Características pessoais. Conflitos, falta de suporte, uso de drogas na família, conhecer alguém que se corta, redes sociais, religiosidade, histórico de violência sexual e bullying foram identificados como fatores de risco que influenciam na automutilação. Considerações Finais: as adolescentes apontaram para a necessidade de diálogos livres de preconceitos nas escolas, nos dispositivos de saúde e família, configurando fatores de proteção para evitar essa prática que advém de diversos acontecimentos negativos ao longo da vida.

RESUMO Objetivo: Realizar a validação de construção dos Sinais Enunciativos de Aquisição da Linguagem para crianças de 3 a 12 meses. Método: A amostra contou com 94 díades de mãe-bebê para análise dos sinais da fase 1 (3 a 6 meses) e 61 díades para análise dos sinais da fase 2 (7 a 12 meses). A coleta de dados ocorreu por meio da análise da interação entre mães e bebês em situação lúdica gravada em vídeo nas fases previstas, com atribuição de valor do tipo presente ou ausente a cada sinal analisado em cada fase. Os dados foram organizados em planilha e convertidos para aplicação de software para análise factorial. Resultados: A análise factorial indicou a existência de dois fatores nomeados “da mãe” e “da criança” na análise da fase 1 dos sinais (explicando 71,9% da variação total), com três sinais relevantes para o fator “da criança” e um sinal relevante para o fator “da mãe”, com relação à fase 2 (explicando 74,4% da variação total), um sinal foi relevante para o fator “da criança” e um para o fator “da mãe”. Conclusão: A validação de construção demonstrou que um fator materno e um fator da criança foram hábeis para distinguir grupos de risco e não risco em ambas as fases analisadas, o que sugere que a ausência desses sinais pode indicar risco à aquisição da linguagem.

ABSTRACT Purpose: To perform the construct validation of enunciative signs of language acquisition for children aged 3 to 12 months. Method: The study sample consisted of 94 mother-infant dyads for the analysis of Phase 1 (3-6 months) signs and 61 dyads for the analysis of Phase 2 (7-12 months) signs. Data collection was performed through analysis of the interaction between mothers and infants in play situation recorded in 15-min videos in the predicted phases, with attribution of value types of present or absent to each sign analyzed. The collected data were organized on a spreadsheet and then converted to computer applications for factor analysis. Results: Factor analysis indicated the existence of two factors named “mother” and “infant” both for Phase 1 signs (explaining 71.9% of the variation) - with three signs relevant for the “infant” factor and one sign relevant for the “mother” factor, and for Phase 2 signs (explaining 74.4% of the variation) - with one sign relevant for the “infant” factor and one sign relevant for the “mother” factor. Conclusion: Construct validation showed that one “mother” factor and one “infant” factor were able to distinguish between at-risk and not-at-risk groups in both phases analyzed, which suggests that the absence of these signs may pose risks to language acquisition.

RESUMO O tamanho do ovipositor dos parasitoides influencia a escolha do hospedeiro. Parasitoides que atacam hospedeiros expostos tendem a ter ovipositores menores em relação aos que precisam perfurar algum tipo de substratos ou tecidos como o das galhas. Como a maioria dos estudos trata esse assunto em nível interespecífico, o objetivo deste trabalho foi testar a variação intraespecífica e acoplamento fenotípico no tamanho do ovipositor de Galeopsomyia sp. no ataque a galhas. Foram amostradas galhas coletadas em Guapira opposita (Nyctaginaceae), planta hospedeira de cinco espécies de galhadores: Bruggmannia elongata, B. robusta, B. acaudatae duas espécies não descritas de Bruggmannia (sp. 1 e sp. 2) (Diptera, Cecidomyiidae). Em cada transecção, todas as galhas das 30 primeiras plantas encontradas foram coletadas e acondicionadas em saco plástico até a emergência dos parasitoides. Foram feitas 15 amostragens ao longo de dois anos. As larvas de último ínstar dos galhadores, espessura das galhas, assim como o tamanho do ovipositor dos indivíduos de Galeopsomyia sp. foram medidos. Não foi encontrada diferença para o tamanho das larvas entre espécies de galhador. Porém, as galhas de Bruggmannia sp. 1 e sp. 2 foram significativamente mais espessas que as de B. acaudata e essas mais espessas que as de B. elongata e B. robusta. Os tamanhos do ovipositor diferiram significativamente para vespas emergidas das galhas de Bruggmannia sp. 1 e sp. 2 em relação às demais. A dimensão do hospedeiro é fundamental para determinar o tamanho do parasitoide, mas neste caso o tamanho do hospedeiro não variou, e sim a espessura do tecido a ser perfurado. Galhas mais espessas foram atacadas por parasitoides maiores e com ovipositor mais longo, indicando acoplamento fenotípico. Assim, espessuras maiores de galha parecem estar selecionando indivíduos maiores da população, o que pode ter consequências evolutivas importantes a longo prazo.

ABSTRACT Parasitoid ovipositor size importantly affects host choice; those attacking exposed hosts usually have shorter ovipositors compared to those needing drilling deeper through substrates such as plant tissue and gall tissue. Most studies treat this theme at the interspecific level, and the aim of this work was to test for intraspecific variation and phenotypic matching in ovipositor size for Galeopsomyia sp. attacking galls. Galls were sampled from Guapira opposita(Nyctaginaceae), a host plant to five species of Bruggmannia gallers (Diptera, Cecidomyiidae) in southern Brazil: Bruggmannia elongata, B. robusta, B. acaudata, and two undescribed species of Bruggmannia (sp. 1 and sp. 2). On forest transects, all galls from the 30 first galled plants found were sampled and kept in sealed plastic bags until parasitoid emergence. A total of 15 samples were done along two years. We measured galler last instar larvae length and gall thickness for each galling species, and ovipositor length for all Galeopsomyia sp. individuals emerging from the galls. There were no differences in larval length among galler species. However, Bruggmannia sp. 1 and sp. 2 galls were significantly thicker than those of B. acaudata, and the latter thicker than both B. elongata and B. robusta galls. Wasp ovipositor size differed significantly between those coming from Bruggmannia sp. 1 and sp. 2 galls relative to all others. Host extended phenotype size is thus fundamental to determine parasitoid size, but in this case host (larval) size does not change among species, although gall thickness was different. Thicker galls were attacked by larger parasitoids with longer ovipositors, denoting phenotypic matching. Thicker galls appear to be selecting larger parasitoid individuals, which in the long run can lead to important evolutionary change as well.

Abstract Turner syndrome (TS) is characterized by a set of clinical conditions, including autoimmune/inflammatory diseases and infectious conditions, that can compromise a patient’s quality of life. Here we assessed polymorphisms in CTLA-4 +49A/G (rs231775), PTPN22 +1858G/A (rs2476601), and MBL2 -550 (H/L) (rs11003125), -221(X/Y) (rs7096206) and exon 1 (A/O) in women from northeastern Brazil to determine whether polymorphisms within these key immune response genes confer differential susceptibility to clinical conditions in TS. A case-control genetic association study was performed, including 86 female TS patients and 179 healthy women. An association was observed for the A/G genotype of CTLA-4 +49A/G in TS patients (p=0.043, odds ratio [OR]=0.54). In addition, an association between the CTLA-4 G/G genotype and obesity was detected in TS patients (p=0.02, OR=6.04). Regarding, the -550(H/L) polymorphism in the MBL2 promoter, the frequency of the H/L genotype was significantly higher in the TS group than healthy controls (p=0.01, OR=1.96). The H/H genotype indicated a protective effect in TS patients (p=0.01, OR=0.23). No differences were observed in the distribution of -221(X/Y), MBL2 exon 1 variants, and PTPN22 +1858G/A in any assessed groups. CTLA-4 variants are potentially involved in obesity in this cohort of TS patients from northeastern Brazil.

El objetivo de este artículo es analizar los discursos de profesionales de enfermería de una institución hospitalaria acerca de la locura y del cuidado de enfermería dirigido a personas con sufrimiento mental. Se trata de una investigación de abordaje cualitativo, de carácter exploratorio, tomando el Modo Psicosocial por marco teórico siendo entrevistados 17 profesionales de Enfermería de la atención hospitalaria especializada en psiquiatría. Los datos fueron analizados por el Análisis de Contenidos siendo utilizadas las técnicas de Análisis Temática y Análisis de Enunciación. Surgido dos categorías: (1) Concepciones y causalidad: entre la concreción de la teoría y el abstracto de la experiencia; en la que se discute el silenciamiento de la experiencia ante la teoría que acaba por prevalecer cuando se busca saber lo que es la locura. La (in) visibilidad revisitada o la exclusión como regla en la cual la invisibilidad de la locura reaparece en la forma de la falsa locura. La presencia de discursos similares a los de los primordios de la atención psiquiátrica incita a la reflexión acerca del cuidado y la formación de profesionales de enfermería en el contexto actual así como de la atención en red de base comunitária.

Tomou-se por objetivo analisar os discursos de profissionais de enfermagem de uma instituição hospitalar acerca da loucura e do cuidado de enfermagem voltado a pessoas com sofrimento mental. Trata-se de pesquisa de abordagem qualitativa, de caráter exploratório, tomando o Modo Psicossocial por arcabouço teórico sendo entrevistados 17 profissionais de Enfermagem da atenção hospitalar especializada em psiquiatria. Os dados foram analisados pela Análise de Conteúdo sendo usadas as técnicas de Análise Temática e Análise de Enunciação. Emergiram duas categorias: (1) Concepções e causalidades: entre o concreto da teoria e o abstrato da experiência; na qual discute-se o silenciamento da experiência diante da teoria que acaba por prevalecer quando se busca saber o que é a loucura. (2) A (in)visibilidade revisitada ou a exclusão como regra na qual a invisibilidade da loucura reaparece na forma da loucura falsa. A presença de discursos destoantes do preconizado pela política nacional de saúde mental incita à reflexão acerca da formação de profissionais de enfermagem no contexto atual, bem como da atenção em rede de base comunitária.

The objective of this study was to analyze the discourses of nursing professionals from a hospital about mental illness and nursing care for people with mental suffering. This is a qualitative, exploratory research, with the Psychosocial Mode by theoretical framework being interviewed 17 Nursing professionals of the psychiatric hospital. The data were analyzed by Content Analysis using the techniques of Thematic Analysis and Analysis of Enunciation. Two categories were extracted: (1) Conceptions and causalities: between the concrete of theory and the abstract of experience; which discusses the silencing of the experience before the theory that ends up prevailing when one seeks to know what mental illness. (2) Invisibility revisited or exclusion as a rule in which the invisibility of madness reappears in the form of false madness. The presence of speeches similar to those of the early days of mental health care encourages reflection on the care and training of nursing professionals in the current context as well as community-based network care.

Abstract Periodontal research involves the use of animal models to better understand the biological processes of periodontal diseases and the potential of new or existing therapies. Currently, ligature-induced periodontitis in rats is the main model used in periodontal research, in this model, alveolar bone loss (ABL) is the main parameter evaluated by radiographic, morphometric, and histological techniques. Interestingly, although these methodologies are widely used, it is not totally clarified neither the kinetics of ABL over the induction time nor the agreement degree (repeatability and reproducibility) of these techniques. Objective: To characterize ABL kinetics at 0, 3, 7, 15, 30, and 60 days after ABL induction by ligature and to evaluate the intra- (repeatability) and inter-examiner (reproducibility) agreement and the correlation among the radiographic, morphometric, and histological methodologies. Material and Methods: 60 male Wistar rats with induced ABL were randomly divided into 6 experimental groups (n = 10 animals/group). After 0, 3, 7, 15, 30, and 60 days, the animals were euthanized and their hemimandibles were removed for ABL determination using radiographic, morphometric and histological techniques. Results: Radiographic and morphometric/linear techniques allowed the detection of statistically significant ABL on the third day, while histological and morphometric/area techniques could only detect ABL after the seventh day (ANOVA/Tukey, p<0.05). After the fifteenth day, except for histological analysis, the ABL was stabilized. Concerning the agreement of the methodologies, Bland Altman's test (intra and inter-examiner evaluations) showed no difference among the measurements (p>0.05). In addition, high correlations (Pearson's test, r2>0.9, p<0.05) were observed. Conclusion: The results indicated that the minimum time for ABL induction could vary from 3 to 7 days, according to the chosen analysis methodology. Agreement and correlation data support the comparison of results between studies with same induction time.

Twenty-nine lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolates were submitted for identification using Biolog, API50CHL, 16S rDNA sequencing, and species-specific PCR reactions. The identification results were compared, and it was concluded that a polyphasic approach is necessary for proper LAB identification, being the molecular analyzes the most reliable.

To identify Escherichia coli through the production of β-D-glucuronidase (GUD), 622 suspect cultures were isolated from chicken carcasses and plated in PetrifilmTM EC. Of these cultures, only 44 (7.1%) failed to produce GUD. This result indicates the usefulness of GUD production for estimating E. coli populations in chicken.

Dois α-aminoácidos lipídicos 1a e 1b foram isolados do zoantídeo Protopalythoa variabilis através de fracionamento guiado pela atividade citotóxica. As estruturas foram determinadas por diferentes métodos espectroscópicos, tais como, RMN (ressonância magnética nuclear) ¹H e 13C, IV (infravermelho) e espectrometria de massa de alta resolução (modo positivo). A atividade citotóxica dos extratos, das frações e 1a/1b foi avaliada in vitro através do teste do MTT contra quatro linhagens de células tumorais. Este achado tem implicações biológicas e químicas importantes para essa classe de compostos. Este é o primeiro relato de α-aminoácidos lipídicos a partir de uma fonte natural, bem como de sua atividade citotóxica.

Two lipidic α-amino acids 1a and 1b were isolated from the zoanthid Protopalythoa variabilis using a bioguided fractionation for cytotoxic activity. The structures of the metabolites were determined by spectroscopic methods, including NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) ¹H e 13C, IR (infrared) and high resolution mass spectrometry (positive mode). The cytotoxic activity of the crude extract, as well as of the mixture of 1a and 1b were measured in vitro using the MTT assay for four human tumor cell lines. This finding has important biological and chemical implications for this type of compound. This is the first report of lipidic α-amino acids from natural sources, as well as of their cytotoxic activity.
