Abstract Real non-spherical particles can be modeled using the Discrete Element Method (DEM) with sphere clusters, superquadrics, or polyhedral particles. However, in applications involving a considerable number of particles, the analysis can become impracticable. The goal of this study is to demonstrate how well spherical particles can reproduce the flow of differently shaped particles. In this analysis, four dry particles are employed with different shapes and sphericity: spherical particles and three non-spherical particles, constituted by a combination of three spherical particles. For each non-spherical particle ensemble, the respective angles of repose were determined with DEM simulations using a simple virtual flow box experiment. Next, the flow of spherical particles through the flow box was calibrated to reach the same angle of repose for each non-spherical particle ensemble by tuning friction coefficients. A comparison of the computational time of the simulations for each non-spherical particle and their spherical representation is presented and discussed. The results show that using spherical particles in DEM simulations reduces the computational processing time in relation to the use of irregular forms in the simulations by approximately 80%.

Resumo O aproveitamento de energia remanescente, através da implantação de parques hidrocinéticos, em reservatórios de jusante de centrais hidrelétricas vem ganhando destaque no mundo. Para estimar a quantidade de energia que pode ser extraída de um rio, são necessárias medições in loco, gerando custos consideráveis. Entretanto, através de modelagem fluvial pode-se conhecer os campos de velocidades e profundidades do rio e se estimar a potência instalada de possíveis parques hidrocinéticos. Assim, foram exploradas velocidades e profundidades simuladas via modelo de Saint-Venant 2-D aplicado ao reservatório de jusante da hidrelétrica de Tucuruí. As velocidades foram extrapoladas na direção vertical por meio de uma função logarítmica para determinação do perfil vertical de velocidades. Os diâmetros das turbinas foram definidos em função das profundidades do trecho estudado e de informações disponíveis na literatura. Assim, na seção analisada podem ser instaladas 73 turbinas com potência de aproximadamente 3 MW. Essa potência pode ser maior desde que outras seções sejam avaliadas. Todavia, estudos relativos a impactos ambientais e redução da produção da planta principal devido à redução da altura útil de queda devem ser levados em consideração, antes da instalação de parques hidrocinéticos em reservatórios a jusante de hidrelétricas.

Abstract The exploitation of surplus energy through the setup of hydrokinetic parks in reservoirs downstream from hydroelectric plants is on the increase worldwide. Costly measurements in loco are required in order to estimate the amount of energy that may be extracted from a river. However, river modeling provides river velocities and depths whereby the power of hydrokinetic parks may be estimated. Velocities and depths were simulated with a Saint-Venant 2-D model applied to a downstream reservoir of the Tucuruí hydroelectric dam. Velocities were extrapolated in the vertical direction by means of a logarithmic function to determine the vertical velocity profile, which transfers energy to the turbines. The turbine diameters were defined according to the depths of the studied section and information available in the literature. In the analyzed section, 73 turbines with approximately 3 MW may be installed. Power may be greater if other sections are evaluated. However, studies on environmental impacts and production reduction due to decrease of water level downstream the hydroelectric plant should be taken into account prior to the installation of hydrokinetic plants.

RESUMO Estimar perdas de carga devido à fricção em tubos fechados é uma tarefa importante na solução de muitos problemas práticos nos diferentes ramos da profissão de engenharia. O projeto hidráulico e análise de sistemas de escoamento de suspensão mineral são dois exemplos. Muitos consideram o modelo de Swamee – Jain promissor para avaliar as perdas de carga devido ao atrito em conduto de tubos fechados. Para investigar o fator de atrito o modelo de Swamee – Jain foi empregado para o escoamento confinado de suspensão de caulim com teor de sólidos em massa de 55% (suspensão C), 60% (suspensão B) e 65% (suspensão A) em tubulação de ferro galvanizado com 0,2; 0,3 e 0,5 metros de diâmetro com faixa de vazão de 0,02 a 0,2 m3 por segundo. Todas as suspensões de caulim o aumento do teor de solido e do diâmetro da tubulação contribui para o aumento do fator de atrito para o escoamento confinado em faixa de vazão operacional proporcionando estimativa de valores para utilização em projeto e analise de sistemas de escoamento de caulim.

ABSTRACT Estimating load losses due to friction in closed pipes is an important task for solving many practical problems in the various branches of the engineering profession. Hydraulic projects and analyses of systems for transporting mineral products in suspension are two examples. Many consider the Swamee – Jain model a promising method for assesses load losses due to friction in closed pipes. In order to investigate the friction factor the Swamee – Jain model was employed for confined flow of a kaolin suspension with a concentration of solids in mass of 55% (suspension C), 60% (suspension B) and 65% (suspension A) in a galvanized iron pipe with 0.2; 0.3 and 0.5 meters in diameter with a flow ranging from 0.02 to 0.2 m3 per second. For all of the kaolin suspensions the increase in the solid content and the diameter of the pipe contributes towards increasing the friction factor for confined flow in the operational flow, providing an estimate of values for use in projects and for analyzing systems used for transporting kaolin.

RESUMO A transferência e armazenagem de caulim são etapas importantes para seu processo de beneficiamento. O projeto de um sistema para essas etapas necessita de um estudo detalhado do comportamento dinâmico do material granulado que se está utilizando. Problemas em silos podem ocorrer, em muitos casos, devido ao incorreto dimensionamento de sua geometria pela desconsideração das propriedades de fluxo do material granulado. Portanto, este trabalho se concentrou em analisar as propriedades de fluxo do caulim, com 4% de umidade, com o intuito de dimensionar uma tremonha cônica de um silo para fornecer um fluxo mássico (fluxo uniforme) ao material. Inicialmente, as propriedades de fluxo do caulim foram obtidas em laboratório. Em seguida, a partir da caracterização do caulim, o dimensionamento de uma tremonha cônica do silo foi realizado, por meio da teoria de Jenike, para determinação do ângulo de inclinação para fornecer o padrão de escoamento desejado. Em seguida, o diâmetro mínimo de descarga para evitar o arqueamento foi calculado por meio das teorias de Jenike e Enstad. Resultados experimentais de escoamento em silos de acrílico com tremonhas com diferentes configurações foram obtidos para validar os resultados teóricos. Os resultados dos ensaios experimentais apresentaram boa concordância com os resultados teóricos, os quais mostraram que o dimensionamento pela teoria de Jenike é mais conservador que a teoria de Enstad na determinação do diâmetro mínimo.

ABSTRACT The transfer and storage of kaolin are important steps for its beneficiation process. The design of a system for such purposes requires a detailed study of the dynamic behavior of granular material that is being used. Problems can occur in silos, in many cases, due to incorrect design by not considering the granulated material flow properties. Therefore, this work has focused on analyzing the kaolin flow properties for particular moisture content (4%) in order to design a conical hopper to provide a mass flow (uniform flow) pattern of the material. Initially, the kaolin flow properties were obtained from laboratory tests. Then, from the kaolin characterization, the design of a conical hopper was performed using Jenike theory in order to determine the angle that provides the desired flow pattern (mass flow). Next, the minimum discharge diameter to prevent flow obstruction (cohesive arching) was calculated by the theories of Jenike and Enstad. Experimental test results using acrylic silos with different configurations were obtained to validate the theoretical results. The results of experimental tests demonstrated good concordance with the theoretical results, which have shown that the design by Jenike theory is more conservative than the Enstad theory in determining the minimum diameter.

RESUMONa Amazônia, a navegação é muito importante devido a extensão de rios navegáveis e a falta de redes rodoviárias alternativas. As embarcações geralmente trabalham em condições desfavoráveis, uma vez que não há relação entre a hidrodinâmica dos hélices, geometria e as dimensões do casco da embarcação. Atualmente, não há metodologia para otimização hidrodinâmica com baixo custo computacional e fácil implementação na região. O objetivo deste trabalho foi o desenvolvimento de uma abordagem matemática voltada para o projeto de propulsores marítimos aplicados as embarcações tipicamente encontradas nos rios da Amazônia. Nós desenvolvemos uma formulação otimizada para o cálculo das distribuições de corda e ângulo de torção, considerando o modelo clássico de Glauert. Uma análise teórica para as relações de empuxo e torque em um volume de controle anular foi realizado. O modelo matemático utilizado foi baseado na teoria do momento do elemento de pá (BEMT). Concluímos que a nova metodologia, proposta neste trabalho, demonstra bom comportamento físico quando comparado com a teoria de Glauert e os dados experimentais do propulsor Wageningen B3-50.

ABSTRACTIn the Amazon, river navigation is very important due to the length of navigable rivers and the lack of alternative road networks. Boats usually operate in unfavorable conditions, since there is no hydrodynamic relation among propellers, geometry, and the dimensions of the boat hull. Currently, there is no methodology for propeller hydrodynamic optimization with low computational cost and easy implementation in the region. The aim of this work was to develop a mathematical approach for marine propeller design applied to boats typically found on Amazon rivers. We developed an optimized formulation for the chord and pitch angle distributions, taking into account the classical model of Glauert. A theoretical analysis for the thrust and torque relationships on an annular control volume was performed. The mathematical model used was based on the Blade Element Momentum Theory (BEMT). We concluded that the new methodology proposed in this work demonstrates a good physical behavior when compared with the theory of Glauert and the experimental data of the Wageningen B3-50 propeller.

RESUMO Estudou-se a otimização técnico-econômica da geração elétrica de pequenas centrais hidrelétricas (PCH) de baixa queda da Amazônia, objetivando contribuir para estudos hidro energéticos de PCHs. Curvas de permanência de vazões necessárias ao dimensionamento de PCHs foram simuladas com o Modelo Hidrológico Não-linear Simples com Fator de Ganho Sigmoidal (MSV). Devido a sazonalidade climática inerente à Amazônia, a geração hidrelétrica das PCHs foi considerada utilizando duas turbinas hidráulicas axiais em paralelo. Para a otimização técnica, com o programa CARTHA obtiveram-se curvas de carga das turbinas, para estudo da influência da regulagem e relação das potências das turbinas sobre a eficiência energética das PCHs. Conclui-se que PCHs dotadas de turbinas com regulagem dupla apresentam eficiência de 80%, com regulagem do rotor 72% e com regulagem do distribuidor 65%. Para a otimização econômica, estudaram-se três cenários de mercado: desaquecido, neutro e aquecido. Conclui-se que os melhores resultados técnico-econômicos foram obtidos para PCHs com potência total da ordem de 30MW, turbinas iguais, apenas com regulagem do rotor, mercado desaquecido, resultando em Período de Retorno de 1,7 anos e Rentabilidade de 222%.

ABSTRACT The technical and economic optimization of electricity generation by small hydropower plants (SHP) with a low head in the Amazon is studied, in order to contribute to hydro energy studies of these SHP. The flow duration curves (FDC) needed to design hydropower generation were simulated using the Nonlinear Hydrological Model Simple with Sigmoidal Gain Factor (SVM). Due to seasonality inherent to the Amazon, SHP generation was considered using two axial turbines operating in parallel. For technical optimization the CARTHA program was used to obtain the axial turbine load curves, allowing the study of the influence of the type of regulation and the relationship of the powers of the turbines on the energy efficiency of SHP. Plants with double regulation turbines presented an efficiency of 80%, for rotor regulation 72% and for distributor regulation 65%. Three market scenarios were studied for economic optimization: sluggish, neutral and hot. The best technical and economic results were obtained for SHP with total power on the order of 30MW, equal turbines equipped with rotor regulation only, sluggish market, resulting to the return period of 1.7 years and profitability of 222%.

This work describes the steps required to construct a hydrodynamic model of the Guajará Bay, using Geographic Information Systems and the Finite Element Method. An overview of the problem that motivates this modelling procedure, i.e., the pollutant dispersion, is presented. The computer software used is then discussed, stressing the links between the data model entities. The calibration procedure is described. The methods used to obtain field data and the results obtained are presented, alongside the main flow patterns of the water. The simulations and applications of the model are discussed at the end of the paper.
