Abstract: This paper analyzes food buying practices and market places during the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic, in Brazil. The data has been obtained through an online survey conducted to 158 consumers domiciled in the state of Paraná, in Brazil, and tabulated through simple analysis. The results show consumption preferences among locally produced food, highlighting the relevance of food acquisition channels based on proximity, especially in direct purchase from producers. This proximity relationship allows to obtain relevant information about how food is produced and processed, apart from the acknowledgement by people who had participated in such processes. It is concluded that the level of availability of information on the production method features, and relationships based on trust are key factors when choosing a marketing channels for food procurement.

Resumen: Este trabajo analiza las prácticas y los lugares de compra de alimentos durante el segundo año de la pandemia de covid-19 en Brasil. Los datos se obtuvieron mediante un cuestionario en línea con un análisis aleatorio simple, para 158 consumidores domiciliados en el estado de Paraná, Brasil. Los resultados muestran la preferencia de consumo por los alimentos producidos localmente, denotando la relevancia que tienen los canales de adquisición de alimentos de proximidad, especialmente la compra directa al productor. Esta relación de proximidad permite obtener información relevante sobre cómo se produjeron y procesaron los alimentos, además del reconocimiento de las personas que participaron en estos procesos. Concluimos que la disponibilidad de información sobre las características del método de producción y las relaciones de confianza son factores determinantes en la elección del canal de compra de alimentos.

Resumo: Neste texto são analisadas as práticas e os locais de aquisição de alimentos durante o segundo ano de pandemia de covid-19 no Brasil. Os dados foram obtidos por meio de questionário on-line com amostragem aleatória simples, para 158 (n) consumidores domiciliados no estado do Paraná, Brasil. Os resultados evidenciam a preferência de consumo por alimentos produzidos localmente, denotando relevância há canais de aquisição de alimentos de proximidade, especialmente a compra direta do produtor. Essa relação de proximidade permite a obtenção de informações relevantes com respeito ao modo como o alimento foi produzido e processado, adicionalmente ao reconhecimento das pessoas envolvidas nesses processos. Concluímos que a disponibilidade de informações a respeito das características do modo de produção e das relações de confiança são determinantes na escolha do canal de aquisição de alimentos.

RESUMO O Brasil abriga uma grande quantidade de água doce. Saber como essa água armazenada é repartida no espaço e no tempo entre os componentes superficiais e subsuperficiais é crucial para uma representação mais correta do ciclo hídrico do país, o que tem grandes implicações para a tomada de decisões relacionadas à gestão dos recursos hídricos. Neste estudo, extraímos a variabilidade mensal do armazenamento de água, de 2003 a 2020, com base em diferentes fontes que representam o estado da arte da informação sobre diferentes componentes de armazenamento - águas subterrâneas, umidade do solo, águas superficiais, e reservatórios artificiais – em todas as regiões hidrográficas brasileiras, e computamos a contribuição de cada componente em relação a variabilidade total. A maior parte da variabilidade pode ser atribuída a umidade do solo (40-68%), seguida por águas subterrâneas (18-40%). Águas superficiais tem grande influência nas regiões hidrográficas do noroeste (influência de sistemas de monção) com 18-40% e nas BHRs do sul (influência de sistemas subtropicais) com 5-10%. O estoque em reservatórios artificiais tem contribuições importantes nas regiões do Paraná com 12,1%, do São Francisco com 3,5% e do Tocantins-Araguaia com 2,1%. Em termos de variabilidade de longo prazo, os estoques de água têm geralmente diminuído nas regiões leste e aumentado no noroeste e no sul, sendo os estoques de águas subterrâneas e reservatórios os mais afetados, embora essa tendência também possa ser observada nos picos de água superficial. Comparações feitas com estudos anteriores mostram que a abordagem e os conjuntos de dados utilizados podem ter um impacto considerável nos resultados. Tal análise pode ter amplas implicações na identificação da natureza da variabilidade de amplitude e fase entre as regiões, a fim de melhor caracterizá-las e obter melhores avaliações das tendências hidrológicas.

ABSTRACT Brazil hosts a large amount of freshwater. Knowing how this stored water is partitioned in space and time between surface and subsurface components is a crucial step towards a more correct depiction of the country’s water cycle, which has major implications for decision making related to water resources management. Here, we extracted monthly water storage (WS) variability, from 2003 to 2020, based on multiple state-of-the-art datasets representing different WS components – groundwater (GW), soil moisture (SM), surface waters (SW), and artificial reservoirs (RS) – in all Brazilian Hydrographic Regions (BHRs), and computed each component’s contribution to the total variability. Most of the variability can be attributed to SM (40-68%), followed by GW (18-40%). SW has great influence in the north-western BHRs (humid monsoon influenced) with 18-40% and the southern BHRs (subtropical system influenced) with 5-10%. RS has important contributions in the Paraná with 12.1%, São Francisco with 3.5%, and Tocantins-Araguaia with 2.1%. In terms of long-term variability, water storages have been generally decreasing in the eastern and increasing in north-western and southern BHRs, with GW and RS being the most affected, although it can also be observed in SW peaks. Comparisons made with previous studies show that the approach and datasets used can have a considerable impact in the results. Such analysis can have broad implications in identifying the nature of amplitude and phase variability across regions in order to better characterize them and to obtain better evaluations of hydrological trends under a changing environment.

The characterization studies of tailings from mining are crucial for the development of its reuse processes and the reduction of impacts caused by its conditioning on the earth’s surface. This study characterizes the magnetic tailings from phosphate-rock processing using X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry and quantitative electron microscopy techniques. Samples were obtained from the magnetic tailings deposit of a mining company in the Alto Paranaíba region, Minas Gerais. The tailings are mainly composed of hematite/magnetite (74.92%), ilmenite (8.91%), fluorapatite (8.8%), anatase (3.07%), calcite (1.67%), goethite (1.62%), and quartz (1.02%). The particle size of the tailings is smaller than that specified for the production of sinter feed. The hematite/magnetite phase is strongly associated with ilmenite and fluorapatite. New stages of comminution and separation are needed due to the low degree of liberation of these minerals for a possible reuse of the components.

Abstract Germline mutations in the TP53 gene are associated with Li-Fraumeni and Li-Fraumeni-Like Syndromes, characterized by increased predisposition to early-onset cancers. In Brazil, the prevalence of the TP53-p.R337H germline mutation is exceedingly high in the general population and in cancer-affected patients, probably as result of a founder effect. Several genotyping methods are used for the molecular diagnosis of LFS/LFL, however Sanger sequencing is still considered the gold standard. We compared performance, cost and turnaround time of Sanger sequencing, PCR-RFLP, TaqMan-PCR and HRM in the p.R337H genotyping. The performance was determined by analysis of 95 genomic DNA samples and results were 100% concordant for all methods. Sequencing was the most expensive method followed by TaqMan-PCR, PCR-RFLP and HRM. The overall cost of HRM increased with the prevalence of positive samples, since confirmatory sequencing must be performed when a sample shows an abnormal melting profile, but remained lower than all other methods when the mutation prevalence was less than 2.5%. Sequencing had the highest throughput and the longest turnaround time, while TaqMan-PCR showed the lowest turnaround and hands-on times. All methodologies studied are suitable for the detection of p.R337H and the choice will depend on the application and clinical scenario.
