Abstract To date, hydroxyurea is the only effective and safe drug that significantly reduces morbidity and mortality of individuals with Sickle cell disease. Twenty years of real-life experience has demonstrated that hydroxyurea reduces pain attacks, vaso-occlusive events, including acute chest syndrome, the number and duration of hospitalizations and the need for transfusion. The therapeutic success of hydroxyurea is directly linked to access to the drug, the dose used and adherence to treatment which, in part, is correlated to the availability of hydroxyurea. RESUMO Objetivo analisar a relação entre a participação social e a condição de fragilidade física de idosos hospitalizados. Método estudo transversal analítico, desenvolvido em um hospital público no sul do Brasil. Utilizou-se questionários sociodemográficos e clínicos, inventário de atividades e testes do fenótipo de fragilidade. Empregaram-se análises descritivas, teste de Kruskal-Wallis e comparações múltiplas de Dunn. Resultados dos 124 idosos avaliados, 54,8% eram do sexo masculino, 46% casados, 14,5% não frágeis, 39,5% pré-frágeis, 46% frágeis. Houve aumento crescente da condição de não frágil, pré-frágil e frágil nos domínios, nunca tem contato por meio de cartas ou e-mail (22,2%; 40,8%; 61,4%), nunca presta assistência a outras pessoas (27,8%; 40,8%; 80,7%), nunca realiza trabalho voluntário (77,8%; 77,6%; 98,2%), nunca viaja (33,3%; 53,1%; 84,2%), nunca sai com pessoas para atividades de lazer (16,7%; 28,6%; 56,1%), nunca participa de atividades sociais (38,9%, 44,9%; 75,4%), nunca faz uso de computador e internet (50%, 55,1%; 86%) e nunca dirige veículos (66,7%, 63,3%; 94%). Conclusão idosos com menor participação social apresentam maior risco de transição para fragilidade física. ABSTRACT Objective to analyze the relationship between social participation and physical frailty condition of hospitalized older adults. Method analytical cross-sectional study, developed in a public hospital in southern Brazil. Data collection took place from March to May 2023, using sociodemographic and clinical questionnaires, an activity inventory and physical frailty phenotype testing. Descriptive analyses, the Kruskal-Wallis test and Dunn's multiple comparisons were used. Results of the 124 older people evaluated, 54.8% were male, 14.5% non-frail, 39.5% pre-frail, 46% frail. There was a growing increase in the status of non-frail, pre-frail and frail in the domains, never has contact with other people through letters or e-mail (22.2%; 40.8%; 61.4%), never provides assistance to other people (27.8%; 40.8%; 80.7%), never performs voluntary work (77.8%; 77.6%; 98.2%), never travels (33.3%; 53.1%; 84.2%), never goes out with people for leisure activities (16.7%; 28.6%; 56.1%), never participates in social activities (38.9%, 44.9%; 75.4%), never drives vehicles (66.7%, 63.3%; 94%). Conclusion older adults who never practice social participation activities are at greater risk of transitioning to physical frailty. RESUMEN Objetivo analizar la relación entre participación social y condición de fragilidad física de adultos mayores hospitalizados. Método estudio transversal, desarrollado en un hospital público del sur de Brasil. La recolección de datos se realizó de marzo a mayo de 2023, mediante cuestionarios sociodemográficos y clínicos, inventario de actividad y pruebas de fenotipo de fragilidad física. Se utilizaron análisis descriptivos, la prueba de Kruskal-Wallis y comparaciones múltiples de Dunn. Resultados de los 124 adultos mayores evaluados, 14,5% eran no frágiles, 39,5% prefrágiles y 46% frágiles. Hubo un aumento creciente en el estatus de no frágil, prefrágil y frágil en los dominios, nunca tiene contacto con otras personas a través de cartas o correo electrónico (22,2%; 40,8%; 61,4%), nunca realiza trabajo voluntario (77,8%; 77,6%; 98,2%), nunca viaja (33,3%; 53,1%; 84,2%), nunca sale para actividades de ocio (16,7%; 28,6%; 56,1%), nunca participa en actividades sociales (38,9%, 44,9%; 75,4%), nunca conduce vehículos (66,7%, 63,3%; 94%). Resumo O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar a substituição de virginiamicina por produtos à base de levedura em dietas de alto grão contendo monensina, sobre a digestibilidade dos nutrientes e parâmetros ruminais. Cinco novilhos cruzados Nelore x Holandês (peso inicial 281 kg ± 9,2 kg) distribuídos em um delineamento Quadrado Latino 5 x 5. As dietas foram compostas por silagem de milho (355 g kg-1) e concentrado composto por: milho moído, farelo de soja, casca de soja, mistura mineral, calcário, sal e ureia (645 g kg-1). Os tratamentos foram: 1. Controle, 18 mg kg-1 MS de virginiamicina (VM); 2. Cultura de levedura enriquecida (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) 7g animal dia-1 (CLE 7); 3. Cultura de levedura enriquecida (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) 14g animal dia-1 (CLE 14); 4. Levedura autolisada (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) 7g animal dia-1 (LA 7) e Levedura autolisada (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) 14g animal dia-1 (LA 14). A monensina (18 mg kg-1 MS) estava presente na mistura mineral vitamínica fornecida em todos tratamentos. Não houve diferença significativa (P>0,05) para o consumo de matéria seca (média 8,36 kg MS); digestibilidade da matéria orgânica (média 58,39%) e média de pH ruminal (média 6,75). Além disso, não foram encontrados efeitos significativos de tratamentos para concentração de ácidos graxos de cadeia curta e nitrogênio amoniacal. Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of substituting virginiamycin with yeastbased products in high-energy diets containing monensin on the nutrient digestibility and ruminal parameters of cattle. Five crossbred Nellore × Holstein steers (initial body weight 281 kg ± 9.2 kg) were allotted to a 5 × 5 Latin square design. The diets were composed in dry matter basis of corn silage (355 g kg-1), and concentrate composed of ground corn, soybean meal, soybean hulls,mineral mix, limestone, salt and urea (645 g kg-1). The treatments were: 1 - control, 18 mg kg-1 dry matter (DM) virginiamycin (VM); 2 - enriched yeast culture (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) at 7 g animal day-1 (EYC 7); 3 - enriched yeast culture (S. cerevisiae) at 14 g animal day-1 (EYC 14); 4 - autolyzed yeast (S. cerevisiae) at 7 g animal day-1 (AY 7); and 5 - autolyzed yeast (S. cerevisiae) at 14 g animal day-1 (AY 14). Monensin (18 mg kg-1 DM) was added to the mineral mix in all treatments. No significant differences (P > 0.05) were found for DM intake (mean 8.36 kg DM), organic matter (OM) digestibility (average of 58.39%), or mean ruminal pH (mean 6.75) among treatments. Moreover, the treatment did not have a significant effect on the short-chain fatty acid or ammonia nitrogen concentrations. ABSTRACT Purpose: To evaluate exogenous hyaluronic acid (HA) derived from bacterial fermentation through enteral and parenteral routes in ischemic skin flaps induced in rats, using clinical and histological exams; and interleukins (IL) as tissue inflammatory biomarkers. Methods: Sixty-four male adults Wistar rats with ischemic skin flaps on the dorsum were randomized into four groups, based on the treatment protocol: subcutaneous administration of saline solution (0.9%) (GI); oral administration of distilled water (GII); subcutaneous administration of HA (0.3%) (GIII); and oral administration of HA (1%) (GIV). Flaps of all groups were comparable regarding clinical and macroscopic evaluation, histological examination, pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α) and anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10. Results: A lower percentage of necrosis was identified in flaps treated with subcutaneous administration of HA (0.3%). The pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines, epidermis thickness, blood vessels, and inflammatory cells showed statistically significant inter-group and intra-group differences (p < 0.05). Conclusions: High molecular HA (1,400 ~ 2,000 kDa) administrated by subcutaneous or oral route exhibited beneficial effects in ischemic skin flaps of rats. However, subcutaneous administration of HA (0.3%) showed better results in terms of the percentage of necrosis and epithelialization. ABSTRACT Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of ozone therapy applied topically and/or by bagging on the healing of clean wounds induced in rat’s skin. Methods: One hundred and twenty male rats of about 16 weeks old was divided into five groups: G1) saline solution (0.9%); G2) sunflower oil; G3) ozonated sunflower oil; G4) ozone bagging; G5) association of ozonated sunflower oil and ozone bagging. The wounds were evaluated through macroscopic, morphometric, histopathologic, and tensile strength analyses. Results: Analysis among groups showed a lower percentage of wound contraction in G1 compared to G4 only in M7D. The tensile strength of the wounds showed differences among groups in the seventh (M7D) and the 14th (M14D) postoperative day, and among time points in G1 (M14D > M7D). The elongation of the wounds showed differences in G3 (M7D > M14D). Histological evaluation of the wounds showed significant change in bleeding, mixed to mononuclear infiltrate, congestion, and tissue disorganization for tissue organization between groups and time points. Conclusions: Ozone therapy applied topically and/or by bagging was not deleterious to the healing of clean wounds induced in rat’s skin, but ozone bagging showed the best contribution to the healing process. Resumo Foram coletados carrapatos parasitando 102 animais silvestres nos estados de Mato Grosso e Goiás, Brasil, entre 2015 e 2018. Um total de 2338 carrapatos (865 machos, 541 fêmeas, 823 ninfas e 109 larvas) pertencentes a quatro gêneros (Amblyomma, Dermacentor, Haemaphysalis e Rhipicephalus) e pelo menos 21 espécies foram identificadas. A extração de DNA e pesquisa molecular para agentes riquétsiais foram realizadas em 650 carrapatos. Os resultados revelaram parasitismo pelas seguintes espécies: Rickettsia amblyommatis em Amblyomma cajennense s.s., A. cajennense s.l., Amblyomma coelebs, Amblyomma humerale, Amblyomma longirostre, Amblyomma nodosum, Amblyomma scalpturatum, Amblyomma sculptum e Amblyomma romitii; Rickettsia parkeri em Amblyomma nodosum, Amblyomma ovale, Amblyomma scalpturatum e Amblyomma triste; Rickettsia rhipicephali em Haemaphysalis juxtakochi; Rickettsia sp. em A. cajennense s.s., A. nodosum e A. sculptum e, por último, ‘Candidatus Rickettsia andeanae’ em Amblyomma parvum e Rhipicephalus microplus. Abstract Ticks parasitizing 102 wild animals in the states of Mato Grosso and Goiás, Brazil were collected between 2015 and 2018. A total of 2338 ticks (865 males, 541 females, 823 nymphs, and 109 larvae) belonging to four genera (Amblyomma, Dermacentor, Haemaphysalis, and Rhipicephalus) and at least 21 species were identified. DNA extraction and a molecular survey for rickettsial agents were performed on 650 ticks. The results revealed parasitism by the following species: Rickettsia amblyommatis in Amblyomma cajennense s.s., A. cajennense s.l., Amblyomma coelebs, Amblyomma humerale, Amblyomma longirostre, Amblyomma nodosum, Amblyomma scalpturatum, Amblyomma sculptum, and Amblyomma romitii; Rickettsia parkeri in Amblyomma nodosum, Amblyomma ovale, Amblyomma scalpturatum, and Amblyomma triste; Rickettsia rhipicephali in Haemaphysalis juxtakochi; Rickettsia sp. in A. cajennense s.s., A. nodosum, and A. sculptum, and lastly, ‘Candidatus Rickettsia andeanae’ in Amblyomma parvum and Rhipicephalus microplus. Abstract The Santos Basin (SB) is the main petroliferous basin in the Brazilian continental margin and one of the most studied marine areas in Brazil. However, historical data suggest that new efforts should be carried out to acquire quantitative biological data, especially in the deep sea, to establish the baseline of essential ocean variables in different ecosystems for future monitoring programs. The Brazilian energy company Petrobras planned and executed 24 oceanographic cruises over a period of 2 years to assess the benthic (SANSED cruise) and pelagic (SANAGU cruise) systems of the SB (356 days at sea in 2019 and 2021/2022). These efforts were part of the Santos Project, which comprised a comprehensive environmental study aimed at investigating benthic and pelagic variables to characterize ecology, biogeochemistry, thermohaline properties of water masses, and ocean circulation patterns, geomorphology, and sedimentology, as well as organic and inorganic chemistry. Here we present the detailed sampling designs and the field methods employed on board, during the SB scientific cruises. All sampling protocols were based on standardized approaches. For the benthos analyses, triplicate sediment samples were performed using a GOMEX-type box corer (0.25 m²) or a large modified Van Veen grab (0.75 m²) at 100 stations ranging from 25 to 2400 m depth. At each station, 25 geochemical and physico-chemical parameters were analyzed in addition to micro-, meio-, and macrofauna and living foraminifera samples. For the pelagic system, 60 stations were selected to investigate the plankton community, ranging in size from pico- to macroplankton, through vertical, horizontal, and oblique net hauls (20, 200, and 500 μm mesh size), as well as 25 biogeochemical parameters collected with an aid of a CTD-rosette sampler. Part of this scientific information also serves the Regional Environmental Characterization Project (PCR-BS) in support of Petrobras’ Santos Basin drilling licensing process led by the Brazilian Environmental Agency – IBAMA. This project contributes to the sustainable development of the SB, in line with the guidelines of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. Abstract This study aimed to characterize the spatial distribution and composition of living Benthic Foraminifera (BF) and to comprehend how environmental conditions (e.g., organic matter) can affect communities of these protozoa in the northern and southern sectors of the Santos Basin (SB), in the continental slope and São Paulo Plateau. In this context, 23 stations (65 samples including replicates at each station) were collected between 400 and 2,400 m water depth. Multivariate analyses revealed that the ecological structure of the community changes mainly along the bathymetric gradients. Stations located between 400 and 700 m, both in northern and southern sectors, are characterized by the presence of indicator species of high intensity of currents, such as Globocassidulina subglobosa and Trifarina bradyi. These stations are also mainly marked by the occurrence of Epistominella exigua, a phytodetritivore species. The stations at 1,000 and 1,300 m depth, in both sectors, are characterized by high accumulation of organic matter in the sediments, which favors the development of agglutinated foraminifera species, such as those of the genus Reophax. Finally, the lower slope and the São Paulo Plateau, in both sectors, are oligotrophic regions, with pulses of labile organic carbon, probably low current velocities and the presence of Alabaminella weddellensis. The quantity and quality of food, which are closely related to hydro-sedimentary dynamics and bentho-pelagic coupling in the slope and São Paulo Plateau, are the main factors that influence the distribution of living BF assemblages in the SB. Resumo A recuperação das pessoas acometidas pela COVID-19 é um processo que continua para além do quadro agudo da infecção pelo Sars-CoV-2. O comprometimento de diversos sistemas corporais pode acarretar impactos funcionais e demandar assistência fisioterapêutica contínua tanto na atenção ambulatorial quanto na atenção primária à saúde (APS). Neste ensaio, busca-se discutir os desafios da organização e da oferta de assistência fisioterapêutica em resposta à pandemia da COVID-19 no Brasil. A análise foi sumarizada em três dimensões: oferta da assistência fisioterapêutica na APS e na atenção ambulatorial, e oferta de atenção fisioterapêutica por telessaúde. Conclui-se que: a reabilitação funcional depende da capacidade de resposta da APS; existe um déficit de serviços de reabilitação que antecede a pandemia, e pode comprometer respostas satisfatórias às demandas do atual contexto epidemiológico; faz-se necessária a articulação entre as equipes de fisioterapia ambulatorial e da APS; embora a telessaúde seja um recurso e uma oportunidade para ampliar o acesso da população à reabilitação funcional, sua utilização exige cautela; o fisioterapeuta possui papel crucial em todo o continuum de cuidados da COVID-19.

Abstract The recovery of people affected by COVID-19 is a process that continues beyond the acute condition of infection by Sars-CoV-2. The impairment of several body systems can cause functional impacts and demand continuous physical therapy assistance both in outpatient care and in Primary Health Care (PHC). In this essay, we seek to discuss the challenges of organizing and offering Physical Therapy assistance in response to the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. The analysis was summarized in three dimensions: offering physical therapy assistance in PHC, outpatient care, via telehealth. It is concluded that functional rehabilitation depends on the PHC’s response capacity; there is a shortage of rehabilitation services that precedes the pandemic, and may not respond satisfactorily to the demands of the current epidemiological context; it is necessary to articulate the outpatient physiotherapy and PHC teams; although telehealth is a resource and an opportunity to increase the population’s access to functional rehabilitation, its use requires caution; the physiotherapist plays a crucial role in the entire COVID-19 care continuum.

Objective: To verify factors associated with declining lifestyle during the pandemic, including physical activity, cigarette, and alcohol intake in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, transvestite, and related identities (LGBT+). Methods: Crosssectional study conducted in Brazil in August-November, 2020, with individuals aged ≥18 years. Logistic Regressions was used to estimate odds ratio and 95% confidence intervals. Results: Of the 975 participants, 48.9% (CI95% 45.7;52.1) decreased the practice of physical activity, 6.2% (CI95% 4.8;7.9) increased the cigarettes intake, and 17.3% (CI95% 15.0;19.8) increased alcohol intake. There was a worsening in physical activity among individuals who adhere to masks (OR=2.26 – CI95% 1.20;4.23), worsening in cigarette intake among individuals with one chronic condition (OR=2.39 –CI95% 1.03;5.56), and in alcohol intake among cisgender women (OR=1.95 – CI95% 1.31;2.92) and individuals living with a partner (OR=1.89 – CI95% 1.23;2.91). Conclusion: The worsening was highlighted in cisgender women, individuals with one chronic condition and who adhered to masks.

Physical activity deteriorated among individuals who adhered to mask use (OR=2.26; 95%CI 1.20;4.23), cigarette smoking increased among individuals who had a chronic health condition (OR=2.39; 95%CI 1.03;5.56), and alcohol intake increased among cisgender women (OR=1.95; 95%CI 1.31;2.92) and individuals living with a partner (OR=1.89; 95%CI 1.23;2.91). CONCLUSION: Lifestyle deterioration stood out among cisgender women, individuals with a chronic health condition and those who adhered to mask use.

RESUMO Objetivos: identificar as intervenções de enfermagem em reabilitação, no âmbito da reeducação funcional respiratória, que permitem uma melhoria da função respiratória na pessoa com doença respiratória. Métodos: revisão sistemática da literatura com recurso à pesquisa na base de dados MEDLINE, adotando a mnemónica PICO e a avaliação do nível de evidência e qualidade metodológica salientado por Joanna Briggs Institute. No mês de junho de 2021, foi realizada a pesquisa de estudos randomizados controlados, no intervalo de 2015 a 2020, em inglês ou português. Resultados: obteve-se amostra de nove estudos randomizados controlados, com qualidade metodológica, dos quais se destaca o uso de dispositivos de pressão expiratória positiva como uma importante componente e intervenção de reeducação funcional respiratória. Conclusões: as intervenções de enfermagem em reabilitação com ênfase na reeducação funcional respiratória são fundamentais, evidenciando-se melhorias na saúde geral das pessoas.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to identify nursing interventions in rehabilitation, within the scope of functional respiratory reeducation, which allow a respiratory function improvement in people with respiratory disease. Methods: systematic literature review using the MEDLINE database search, adopting the PICO mnemonic and the Joanna Briggs Institute’s assessment of the level of evidence and methodological quality. The search for randomized controlled trials was carried out in June 2021 considering the period from 2015 to 2020, in English or Portuguese. Results: a sample of nine randomized controlled trials with methodological quality was obtained which highlighted the use of positive expiratory pressure devices as an important component and intervention for respiratory functional reeducation. Conclusions: nursing interventions in rehabilitation with an emphasis on functional respiratory reeducation are essential, showing improvements in people’s general health.

Métodos: revisión sistemática de la literatura con recurso a la investigación en la base de datos MEDLINE, adoptando la mnemónica PICO y evaluación del nivel de evidencia y calidad metodológica señalado por Joanna Briggs Institute. En el mes de junio de 2021, fue realizada la investigación de estudios randomizados controlados, en el intervalo de 2015 a 2020, en inglés o portugués. Resultados: se obtuvo muestra de nueve estudios randomizados controlados, con calidad metodológica, de los cuales se destaca el uso de dispositivos de presión espiratoria positiva como una importante componente e intervención de reeducación funcional respiratoria. Conclusiones: las intervenciones de enfermería en rehabilitación con énfasis en la reeducación funcional respiratoria son fundamentales, evidenciándose mejorías en la salud general de las personas.

The recovery of people affected by COVID-19 is a process that continues beyond the acute condition of infection by Sars-CoV-2. The impairment of several body systems can cause functional impacts and demand continuous Physical Therapy assistance both in outpatient care and in Primary Health Care (PHC). In this essay, we seek to discuss the challenges of organizing and offering Physical Therapy assistance in response to the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. The analysis was summarized in four dimensions: distribution of physical therapists in the country; offering physical therapy assistance in PHC and outpatient care; and provision of physical therapy care via telehealth. It is concluded that there is inequity in the regional distribution of physical therapists in Brazil; functional rehabilitation depends on the PHC's response capacity, which is threatened by the ongoing disruption process; there is a shortage of rehabilitation services that precedes the pandemic, and may not respond satisfactorily to the demands of the current epidemiological context; it is necessary to articulate the outpatient physiotherapy and PHC teams; telehealth, although a resource and an opportunity to increase the population's access to functional rehabilitation, requires caution; the physiotherapist plays a crucial role in the entire COVID-19 care continuum.

A recuperação das pessoas acometidas pela COVID-19 é um processo que continua para além do quadro agudo da infecção pelo Sars-CoV-2. O comprometimento de diversos sistemas corporais pode acarretar impactos funcionais e demandar assistência fisioterapêutica contínua tanto na atenção ambulatorial quanto na Atenção Primária à Saúde (APS). Neste ensaio, busca-se discutir os desafios da organização e da oferta de assistência fisioterapêutica em resposta a pandemia da COVID-19 no Brasil. A análise foi sumarizada em quatro dimensões: distribuição de fisioterapeutas no país; oferta da assistência fisioterapêutica na APS e na atenção ambulatorial; e oferta de atenção fisioterapêutica por Telessaúde. Conclui-se haver iniquidade na distribuição regional de fisioterapeutas no Brasil; a reabilitação funcional depende da capacidade de resposta da APS, a qual se encontra ameaçada pelo processo de desestruturação em curso; existe um déficit de serviços de reabilitação que antecede a pandemia, e pode não responder satisfatoriamente às demandas do atual contexto epidemiológico; faz-se necessária a articulação entre as equipes de fisioterapia ambulatorial e da APS; a telessaúde embora seja um recurso e uma oportunidade para ampliar o acesso da população à reabilitação funcional exige cautela; o fisioterapeuta possui papel crucial em todo o continuum de cuidados da COVID-19.
