Reports on freeze-cast ceramic materials frequently focus on the study of the organized macroporosity and the properties of the materials. This study aims to describe the microstructure evolution of freeze-cast alumina during the sintering process, analyzing grain growth, densification, pore elimination and crystal structure at different sintering temperatures (1300-1500 °C). Aqueous suspensions with 20 vol% alumina were freeze-cast in liquid N2 and sintered. The microstructure was analyzed by stereological analysis, N2 adsorption and X-ray diffraction. Grain sizes varied within 237-500 nm, and the intergranular porosity decreased from 8.8% at 1300 °C to 1.4% at 1500 °C. N2 isotherm analysis revealed pore shrinking from the region of macro and mesopores (20-80 nm), to smaller residual mesopores (3.7-15 nm) at temperatures above 1400 °C. Rietveld refinement of the XRD diffractograms confirmed increased crystallite size and decreased lattice strain at higher sintering temperatures. RESUMO Avaliou-se o valor nutricional do capim-elefante verde colhido aos 56, 84 e 112 dias de idade, por meio do consumo e da digestibilidade em ovinos, da degradabilidade in situ e da cinética da fermentação ruminal. O capim-elefante colhido aos 56 dias proporcionou maiores valores de consumo da MS (1204,81g/dia), da EB (4910,41kcal/dia), da ED (3436,21kcal/dia) e da PB (130,90g/dia). Para o capim-elefante colhido aos 56 dias, ainda foram observados os maiores valores de digestibilidade da MS (70,64%), da EB (70,11%), da PB (68,96%), da FDN (71,4%) e do conteúdo ED (2,86Mcal/kg MS). Com o avanço da idade de corte, houve redução da degradabilidade potencial da MS (77,99% x 68,33%), da PB (84,80% x 56,52%) e da FDN (72,18% x 64,33%), para as idades de corte de 56 e 112 dias, respectivamente. O capim cortado aos 56 dias apresentou maior valor de produção cumulativa de gases (210,50mL/g de MS) e de degradabilidade da matéria seca (63,9%) após 96 horas de fermentação. O capim-elefante verde deve ser colhido aos 56 dias de rebrota em razão das características nutricionais apresentadas.

ABSTRACT The nutritional value of fresh elephant grass harvested at 56, 84 and 112 days of age was evaluated by intake and digestibility in sheep, in situ degradability, and ruminal fermentation’s kinetics. The elephant grass harvested at 56 days provided higher DM intake (1204.81g/day), GE (4910.41kcal/day), DE (3436.21kcal/day), and CP (130.90g/day) values. Furthermore, the highest DM (70.64%), GE (70.11%), DE (2.86%) and CP (68.96%) digestibility values were observed at 56 days. With the increase in the harvest age there was a reduction in the DM (77.99 x 68.33%), CP (84.80 x 56.52%) and NDF (72.18 x 64.33%) potential degradability in the treatments 56 and 112 days, respectively. Higher values of cumulative gas production (210,50mL/g DM) and DM degradability for elephant grass were observed at 56 days, after 96 hours of fermentation. The fresh elephant grass should be harvested at 56 days of regrowth due to the nutritional characteristics found in this study.

RESUMO Este trabalho se baseou na descrição morfológica da paca (Cuniculus paca), espécie selvagem pertencente à ordem dos roedores, típica de regiões tropicais, sendo o seu conhecimento anatômico detalhado muito importante para sua conservação, experimentação e comercialização, pois ainda são escassos na literatura os trabalhos sobre morfologia de espécies selvagens. Macroscopicamente, o pâncreas da paca é formado por lóbulos, organizados em ramificações difusas, e, microscopicamente, tal órgão possui uma camada de tecido conjuntivo frouxo, a partir da qual partem septos, que dividem a glândula em lóbulos, compostos de ácinos e ilhotas pancreáticas.

ABSTRACT The present study aimed to describe the morphology of pacas (Cuniculus paca), a wild species belonging to the order Rodentia, found in tropical areas. The detailed anatomical knowledge of pacas is very important for conservation, experimental studies and commercialization because studies in literature about wild species are scarce. The pancreas of paca has lobes organized in diffuse branches at the macroscopic level and microscopically this organ has a loose connective tissue layer, originating septa that divide the gland into lobes composed of acini and pancreatic islets.

Abstract Small ruminant lentiviruses (SRLV) have high genetic variability which results in different viral strains around the world. This create a challenge to design sensible primers for molecular diagnosis in different regions. This work proposes a protocol of duplex nested-PCR for the precise diagnosis of SRLV. The technique was designed and tested with the control strains CAEV Co and MVV 1514. Then, field strains were submitted to the same protocol of duplex nested-PCR. Blood samples of sheep and goats were tested with AGID and nested PCR with specific primers for pol, gag and LTR. The AGID results showed low detection capacity of positive animals, while the nested PCR demonstrated a greater capacity of virus detection. Results demonstrated that LTR-PCR was more efficient in detecting positive sheep samples, whereas gag-PCR allowed a good detection of samples of positive goats and positive sheep. In addition, pol-PCR was more efficient with goat samples than for sheep. Duplex nested PCR performed with standard virus samples and field strains demonstrated that the technique is more efficient for the detection of multiple pro-viral DNA sequences. This study demonstrated a successful duplex nested PCR assay allowing a more accurate diagnosis of SRLV.

ABSTRACT Abnormal multiplication of oral bacteria causes dental caries and dental plaque. These diseases continue to be major public health concerns worldwide, mainly in developing countries. In this study, the chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of the essential oil of Vitex agnus-castus leaves (VAC‒EO) collected in the North of Brazil against a representative panel of cariogenic bacteria were investigated. The antimicrobial activity of VAC-EO was evaluated in terms of its minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values by using the broth microdilution method in 96-well microplates. The chemical constituents of VAC-EO were identified by gas chromatography (GC‒FID) and gas chromatography‒mass spectrometry (GC‒MS). VAC‒EO displayed some activity against all the investigated oral pathogens; MIC values ranged from 15.6 to 200 μg/mL. VAC-EO had promising activity against Streptococcus mutans (MIC= 15.6 μg/mL), Lactobacillus casei (MIC= 15.6 μg/mL), and Streptococcus mitis (MIC= 31.2 μg/mL). The compounds 1,8-cineole (23.8%), (E)-β-farnesene (14.6%), (E)-caryophyllene (12.5%), sabinene (11.4%), and α-terpinyl acetate (7.7%) were the major chemical constituents of VAC‒EO. VAC-EO displays antimicrobial activity against cariogenic bacteria. The efficacy of VAC-EO against S. mutans is noteworthy and should be further investigated.

RESUMO: A bioimpressão é considerada uma fonte promissora no desenvolvimento celular, e na produção de mini-órgãos, válulas, cartilagens que futuramente poderão ser utilizados na terapia para transplantes em animais e humanos. Assim, essa técnica poderá ser utilizada como uma terapia eletiva, no tratamento de injúrias e principalmente no tratamento de doenças crônico-degenerativas. Em humanos essa terapia está sendo pesquisada a fim de auxiliar a medicina no tratamento e regeneração de tecidos impressos a partir de arcabouços de células desenvolvidas a partir de células-tronco, biomateriais e impressões em 3D. O uso dessa tecnologia é também um auxiliar nas pesquisas oncológicas com o intuito de projetar e avaliar a proliferação celular de tumores, bem como a ação de novos medicamentos quimioterápicos. No entanto, a maior limitação para o uso da terapia utilizando-se a impressora de células, órgãos e tecidos em 3D é a falta de protocolos unificados com metodologias reprodutíveis e detalhadas; com o objetivo de viabilizar a utilização da impressora e a impressão de células, órgãos e tecidos em 3D. Dessa forma, esta revisão busca reunir as publicações mais atuais na área, as quais destacam os avanços no uso de bioimpressão com células-tronco, a fim de descrever as principais técnicas e os potenciais de utilização como alternativa terapêutica na medicina humana e veterinária.

ABSTRACT: The bioprinting is considered a promising source in cell development, and production of mini-organs, valves, cartilage that may eventually be used in therapy for transplantation in animals and humans. It can also be used as an elective therapy in the treatment of injuries and treatment of chronic degenerative diseases. In humans, this therapy is been studied mainly in the treatment and regeneration of tissues printed from scaffold cells developed from stem cells, biomaterials and impressions in 3D. This technology is also an aid for the study of the formation of tumors, in order to design and evaluate the cellular proliferation of the tumors and the action of new chemotherapy drugs. However, the main drawback to this therapy is the lack of standardized protocols with reproducible and detailed methodologies with the aim of enabling the use of bioprinting and printing cells, tissues and organs in 3D. Thus, this review seeks to bring together the most current publications of the bioprinting area in order to describe the technique and its potential use as a therapeutic alternative.

RESUMO: As células tronco mesenquimais (MSC) residem em pequenas quantidades em muitos tecidos e órgãos adultos, desempenhando um papel ativo na homeostase destes locais. O isolamento de MSC já foi demonstrado em amostras de medula óssea, tecido adiposo e fluido amniótico de cabras. O sangue de cordão umbilical é considerado uma fonte importante desse tipo de células. No entanto, até o presente momento, não foi demonstrado o isolamento de MSC provenientes do sangue de cordão umbilical de cabras. Dessa forma, o objetivo do presente estudo foi isolar, cultivar e caracterizar células tronco mesenquimais provenientes do sangue do cordão umbilical caprino. As MSC foram isoladas utilizando o gradiente de densidade Ficoll-Paque e cultivadas em DMEM suplementado com 10% ou 20% de FBS. A caracterização desse tipo celular foi realizada através de análise por citometria de fluxo e diferenciação em linhagens celulares mesodermais. A analise no citômetro de fluxo demonstrou a presença de duas populações distintas, um grupo com células maiores e outro com células menores; observando expressão positiva de CD90, CD44 e CD105, e negativa para CD34 nas células maiores; enquanto que as menores foram positivas para CD90 e CD105, mas negativas para CD44 e CD34. As células isoladas demonstraram capacidade de se diferenciar em condrócitos e osteoblastos quando incubadas com meio de diferenciação específico. O presente estudo demonstrou que células tronco mesenquimais podem ser obtidas com sucesso do sangue do cordão umbilical caprino.

ABSTRACT: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) reside in small numbers in many adult tissues and organs, and play an active role in the homeostasis of these sites. Goat derived multipotent MSC have been established from bone marrow, adipose tissues and amniotic fluid. Umbilical cord blood (UCB) is considered an important source of these cells. However, the MSC isolation from the goat UCB has not been demonstrated. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to isolate, culture and characterize goat umbilical cord blood derived mesenchymal stem cells. MSC were isolated from UCB by Ficoll-Paque density centrifugation and cultured in DMEM supplemented with 10% or 20% FBS. FACS analysis was performed and induction lineage differentiation was made to characterize these cells. They exhibited two different populations in flow cytometry, and revealed the positive expression of CD90, CD44 and CD105, but negative staining for CD34 in larger cells, and positive stained for CD90 and CD105, but negative for CD44 and CD34 in the smaller cells. MSC from goat UCB showed capability to differentiate into chondrocytes and osteoblasts when incubated with specific differentiation medium. Present study established that goat mesenchymal stem cells can be derived successfully from umbilical cord blood.

RESUMO As lesões em membros de grandes animais são um desafio para médicos veterinários, uma vez que somente a osteossíntese não garante resultados satisfatórios. Muitos pesquisadores vêm se dedicando ao desenvolvimento e estudo de substitutos ósseos produzidos de materiais naturais, como quitosana, colágeno e hidroxiapatita, que auxiliam na regeneração óssea. Seis ovinos fêmeas da raça Santa Inês foram submetidos a ostectomias unicorticais de sete milímetros de diâmetro na região proximal da superfície dorsomedial dos III/IV metacarpianos. Foi implantado compósito de quitosana, colágeno e hidroxiapatita em um membro torácico para avaliação da biocompatibilidade do material ao tecido ósseo ovino, e no membro contralateral foi reproduzida a mesma técnica, porém foi mantido sem preenchimento, como controle. Após 60 dias do procedimento cirúrgico, realizou-se biópsia óssea na área de interface entre biomaterial/osso (membro com compósito) e tecido neoformado/osso (membro controle), para realização de avaliação histológica do material não descalcificado, por meio de microscopia de luz e microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Na análise histomorfométrica, mediante microscopia de luz, foi possível identificar maior porcentagem de tecido neoformado em membro controle, quando comparado ao membro com compósito (80% e 63,5%, respectivamente; P<0,05). Por meio da microscopia eletrônica de varredura, observou-se invasão da estrutura interna do compósito por tecido ósseo neoformado. Não houve formação de tecido cicatricial, reação de corpo estranho ou resposta inflamatória crônica nas amostras analisadas. Conclui-se que o compósito de quitosana, colágeno e hidroxiapatita, quando implantado em tecido ósseo ovino, apresenta biocompatibilidade e perfil osteocondutor.

ABSTRACT Fracture management poses a great challenge to large animal practitioners. Osteosynthesis alone is often insufficient to provide satisfactory outcomes in large animals; therefore, several research efforts have been made to investigate and develop bone substitutes capable of promoting bone regeneration. Chitosan-collagen-hydroxyapatite composites constitute a promising alternative given their similar composition to bone. Six Santa Inês ewes were submitted to the creation of experimental 7mm wide unicortical defects on the dorsomedial aspect of the proximal III/IV metacarpal bone diaphysis. Limbs were randomly selected for treatment with chitosan-collagen-hydroxyapatite composite or to serve as untreated controls. Biopsy fragments were collected from the bone/new bone or the bone/biomaterial interface (control and treated defects respectively) within 60 days of surgery; composite biocompatibility was assessed using light and scanning electron microscopy. Histomorphometric analysis under light microscopy revealed greater percentage of new bone tissue in control compared to treated defects (80% and 63.5% respectively; P<0.05). No scar tissue formation, foreign body or chronic inflammatory reactions were observed. Scanning electron microscopy revealed invasion of the composite by new bone tissue. The chitosan-collagen-hydroxyapatite composite studied is biocompatible with bone and shows osteoconductive properties in sheep.

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a type of therapy used primarily for analgesia, but also presents changes in the cardiovascular system responses; its effects are dependent upon application parameters. Alterations to the cardiovascular system suggest that TENS may modify venous vascular response. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of TENS at different frequencies (10 and 100 Hz) on venous vascular reactivity in healthy subjects. Twenty-nine healthy male volunteers were randomized into three groups: placebo (n=10), low-frequency TENS (10 Hz, n=9) and high-frequency TENS (100 Hz, n=10). TENS was applied for 30 min in the nervous plexus trajectory from the superior member (from cervical to dorsal region of the fist) at low (10 Hz/200 μs) and high frequency (100 Hz/200 μs) with its intensity adjusted below the motor threshold and intensified every 5 min, intending to avoid accommodation. Venous vascular reactivity in response to phenylephrine, acetylcholine (endothelium-dependent) and sodium nitroprusside (endothelium-independent) was assessed by the dorsal hand vein technique. The phenylephrine effective dose to achieve 70% vasoconstriction was reduced 53% (P<0.01) using low-frequency TENS (10 Hz), while in high-frequency stimulation (100 Hz), a 47% increased dose was needed (P<0.01). The endothelium-dependent (acetylcholine) and independent (sodium nitroprusside) responses were not modified by TENS, which modifies venous responsiveness, and increases the low-frequency sensitivity of α1-adrenergic receptors and shows high-frequency opposite effects. These changes represent an important vascular effect caused by TENS with implications for hemodynamics, inflammation and analgesia.

Avaliaram-se 12 feridas granulomatosas em membros torácicos e pélvicos de equinos da raça Pantaneira. Foi realizado diagnóstico sugestivo para pitiose cutânea de acordo com as características clínicas das feridas e avaliação histopatológica, com as colorações de hematoxilina-eosina (HE) e Prata Metenamina de Grocott (GMS). A confirmação do diagnóstico foi realizada por exame imuno-histoquímico, método streptavidina-biotina marcada (LSAB). O diagnóstico histopatológico foi de dermatite piogranulomatosa, focal extensa, acentuada, associada a "pseudo-hifas" características de Pythium insidiosum (pitiose cutânea), nos 12 animais desta pesquisa. O diagnóstico de pitiose foi confirmado em 100% dos casos pela imunomarcação positiva (LSAB) para Pythium insidiosum, caracterizada pela visualização de estruturas ramificadas e septadas, sendo observados 100% de paridade entre as técnicas. É possível concluir que a caracterização clínica das feridas granulomatosas com aspecto de pitiose em equinos associada ao resultado histopatológico sugestivo para pitiose equina constituem métodos de diagnóstico confiáveis, os quais podem ser confirmados pela técnica de imuno-histoquímica.

Twelve granulomatous lesions in the thoracic and pelvic limbs of horses from pantaneira breed were evaluated. It was performed suggestive diagnostic of cutaneous pythiosis according to the clinic characteristics of the lesions and histopathological exams using hematoxylin and eosin (HE) and Grocott's methenamine silver (GMS) stains. The confirmation of the diagnoses was performed by the labelled streptavidin biotin (LSAB) method (immunohistochemistry). Extensive focal pyogranulomatous dermatitis associated with "pseudo hyphae" characteristic of Pythium insidiosum (subcutaneous pythiosis) was the histopathological diagnosis for all 12 horses used in this study. It was confirmed in 100% of the cases by the positive result to Pythium insidiosum in the immunohistochemistry exam, characterized by the visualization of branched and septated structures. It was observed 100% of parity between the techniques. We can conclude that clinical characterization of the granulomatous lesions with pythiosis aspects in horses associated with histopathology suggestive of equine pythiosis constitute a reliable method of diagnostic that can be confirmed by immunohistochemistry technique.

O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da inclusão do preparado de anticorpos policlonais (PAP) e/ou da monensina sódica (MON) sobre o desempenho, as características da carcaça, o perfil de ácidos graxos da carcaça (PAG) e a concentração de lipoproteínas sanguíneas (CLS) de bovinos confinados. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente ao acaso, em arranjo fatorial 2 x 2, com medidas repetidas no tempo, sendo os fatores a inclusão ou não de MON e PAP avaliados em dois períodos, em que 72 bovinos machos da raça Brangus, não castrados, foram alocados em 24 baias (três animais/baia), totalizando seis repetições por tratamento. Não foi observado efeito (P>0,05) da inclusão do PAP para nenhuma das varáveis de desempenho e características de carcaça. Contudo, foi observado efeito (P<0,05) da inclusão de MON, em que animais que receberam MON apresentaram maiores ganho de peso diário (1,666 vs. 1,552), ganho de peso total (179,95 vs. 167,68), peso vivo final (474,86 vs. 459,61), peso de carcaça quente (248,46 vs. 240,20), melhor conversão alimentar (5,57 vs. 5,79) e reduzido custo para ganhar um quilo de peso vivo (3,06 vs. 3,18). Ainda não foi observado efeito principal (P>0,05) dos aditivos para o PAG e a CLS. Assim, a inclusão do PAP não foi boa alternativa à substituição da MON. Por outro lado, a inclusão do PAP não afetou negativamente os itens estudados.

This study was designed to test the effects of polyclonal antibody preparation (PAP) against several rumen bacteria and/or monensin (MON) on feedlot performance, carcass characteristics, fatty acid profile and blood lipoprotein concentrations in yearling bulls. Seventy-two Brangus yearling bulls were distributed in a completely randomized design with 2 x 2 factorial arrangements of treatments with six replications; factors were the inclusion or not of PAP or MON, measured over two phases. No significant (P>0.05) PAP main effects were observed for any of the feedlot performance and carcass trait variables. However, significant (P>0.05) MON main effects were observed, where animals receiving MON had higher (P<0.05) average daily gain (1.666 vs. 1.552), total weight gain (179.95 vs. 167.68), final body weight (474.86 vs. 459.61), hot carcass weight (248.46 vs. 240.20), better feed: gain ratio (5.57 vs. 5.79) and better cost to gain one kilo of body weight (3.06 vs. 3.18). No significant (P>0.05) main effects due to feed additives were observed for carcass fatty acid profile and blood lipoprotein concentrations. Therefore, the inclusion of PAP was not a good alternative to replace MON. On the other hand, feeding PAP did not negatively impact the items studied.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito inseticida de extratos aquosos, alcoólicos e oleosos de folhas de oito plantas medicinais contra Diabrotica speciosa preparadas em cinco concentrações. Os extratos que utilizaram óleo de soja comercial como solvente apresentaram as maiores mortalidades de D. speciosa em função do próprio óleo, independentemente das plantas utilizadas em suas concentrações. Sendo assim, o óleo de soja comercial foi descartado como solvente, pois nestes volumes acarretaria sérios problemas de fitotoxidade. Após 24 horas de exposição da praga aos extratos, os maiores valores de mortalidade de D. speciosa foram observados nos extratos de Copaifera Langsdorfii e de Chenopodium ambrosioides, ambos em álcool 5%, e de Artemisia verlotorum, em água 10%. Entretanto, na última avaliação de mortalidade (48 h), o extrato de C. langsdorfii em álcool a 5% apresentou maior mortalidade dessa praga, seguida pelo extrato alcoólico a 5% de C. ambrosioides comparada às demais plantas.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the insecticidal effect of aqueous, alcoholic, and oil extracts from leaves of eight medicinal plants against Diabrotica speciosa prepared at five concentrations. The extracts that used commercial soybean oil as solvent showed the highest D. speciosa mortality due to the solvent itself, regardless of the used plants and their concentrations. Thus, commercial soybean oil was discarded as solvent since at these volumes it would cause serious phytotoxicity problems. After 24 hours of exposure of the pest to the extracts, the highest D. speciosa mortality values were observed for Copaifera langsdorfii and Chenopodium ambrosioides extracts, both in 5% alcohol, and Artemisia verlotorum, in 10% water. However, in the last mortality assessment (48 h), C. langsdorfii extract in 5% alcohol showed higher mortality of this pest, followed by C. ambrosioides extract in 5% alcohol, compared to the remaining plants.

O objetivo deste estudo foi o de determinar as mudanças na composição, abundância e riqueza de espécies ao longo de um gradiente de floresta com variações de solo e inundações. As florestas localizam-se na margem esquerda do Rio Jucu, no Parque Natural Municipal de Jacarenema, Espírito Santo. O levantamento das espécies arbustivo/arbóreas foi realizado em 80 parcelas de 5x25m, distribuídas equitativamente entre as florestas estudadas. Foram incluídos na amostragem todos os indivíduos com >3,2 cm diâmetro à altura do solo (1,30 m). Foram coletadas amostras de solo superficial (0-10 cm) em cada parcela para análise química e física. Os resultados mostraram a existência de gradiente pedológico significativo, que é influenciado pelas variações sazonais do lençol freático. As formações florestais da Restinga apresentaram diferenças significativas na riqueza de espécies, com exceção da Floresta Não Inundável em relação a Floresta Não Inundável de Transição. A Análise de Correlação Canônica (CCA) mostrou que algumas espécies apresentam sua distribuição ao longo do gradiente sob influência da drenagem, das concentrações de nutrientes e das características físicas dos solos. Entre as variáveis testadas, a inundação parece ser o fator mais limitante para o estabelecimento de espécies vegetais nas florestas de Restinga do que os atributos básicos de fertilidade do solo.

The aim of this study was to determine changes in composition, abundance and richness of species along a forest gradient with varying soils and flood regimes. The forests are located on the left bank of the lower Jucu River, in Jacarenema Natural Municipal Park, Espírito Santo. A survey of shrub/tree species was done in 80 plots, 5x25 m, equally distributed among the forests studied. We included in the sampling all individuals with >3.2 cm diameter at breast height (1.30 m). Soil samples were collected from the surface layer (0-10 cm) in each plot for chemical and physical analysis. The results indicate that a significant pedological gradient occurs, which is influenced by varying seasonal groundwater levels. Restinga forest formations showed significant differences in species richness, except for Non-flooded Forest and Non-flooded Forest Transition. The Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA) showed that some species are distributed along the gradient under the combined influence of drainage, nutrient concentration and physical characteristics of the soil. Regarding the variables tested, flooding seems to be a more limiting factor for the establishment of plant species in Restinga forests than basic soil fertility attributes.

The dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) is the origin of ascending serotonergic projections and is considered to be an important component of the brain circuit that mediates anxiety- and depression-related behaviors. A large fraction of DRN serotonin-positive neurons contain nitric oxide (NO). Disruption of NO-mediated neurotransmission in the DRN by NO synthase inhibitors produces anxiolytic- and antidepressant-like effects in rats and also induces nonspecific interference with locomotor activity. We investigated the involvement of the 5-HT1A autoreceptor in the locomotor effects induced by NO in the DRN of male Wistar rats (280-310 g, N = 9-10 per group). The NO donor 3-morpholinosylnomine hydrochloride (SIN-1, 150, and 300 nmol) and the NO scavenger S-3-carboxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycine (carboxy-PTIO, 0.1-3.0 nmol) were injected into the DRN of rats immediately before they were exposed to the open field for 10 min. To evaluate the involvement of the 5-HT1A receptor and the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) glutamate receptor in the locomotor effects of NO, animals were pretreated with the 5-HT1A receptor agonist 8-hydroxy-2-(di-n-propylamino)tetralin (8-OH-DPAT, 8 nmol), the 5-HT1A receptor antagonist N-(2-[4-(2-methoxyphenyl)-1-piperazinyl]ethyl)-N-2-pyridinyl-cyclohexanecarboxamide maleate (WAY-100635, 0.37 nmol), and the NMDA receptor antagonist DL-2-amino-7-phosphonoheptanoic acid (AP7, 1 nmol), followed by microinjection of SIN-1 into the DRN. SIN-1 increased the distance traveled (mean ± SEM) in the open-field test (4431 ± 306.1 cm; F7,63 = 2.44, P = 0.028) and this effect was blocked by previous 8-OH-DPAT (2885 ± 490.4 cm) or AP7 (3335 ± 283.5 cm) administration (P < 0.05, Duncan test). These results indicate that 5-HT1A receptor activation and/or facilitation of glutamate neurotransmission can modulate the locomotor effects induced by NO in the DRN.

Descreveu-se a morfologia do útero de cutias nulíparas e não nulíparas por meio de ovariossalpingoisterectomia. A análise macroscópica do útero foi realizada in loco e na peça retirada. Segmentos das porções proximal, média e distal do órgão foram colhidas, fixadas e preparadas histologicamente, sendo as amostras analisadas à microscopia de luz, e realizada a histomorfometria das camadas uterinas. Topograficamente, o útero localiza-se na região sublombar, caudalmente aos rins, em continuação aos ovários e às tubas uterinas, estendendo-se até à entrada da pelve, onde se posiciona dorsalmente à bexiga. Caracteriza-se como do tipo duplo, embora culmine em apenas um óstio cervical externo. Microscopicamente, a mucosa uterina é formada por variações do epitélio, de cilíndrico a pseudoestratificado, que se apoia em tecido conjuntivo frouxo, onde se observam glândulas endometriais revestidas por epitélio cilíndrico, além da presença de vasos sanguíneos. A camada muscular subdivide-se em interna ou submucosa, média ou vascular e externa ou subserosa. A camada serosa é composta por tecido conjuntivo e mesotélio. Na histomorfometria, verificou-se que a espessura uterina total e a espessura da camada mucosa, em média, foram maiores nas fêmeas não nulíparas.

The uterine morphology was studied through ovarysalpingohysterectomy in nulliparous and non nulliparous agoutis (Dasyprocta azare). The uterus macroscopic analysis was done "in loco" and in the removed specimens. Fragments of the proximal, media and distal portions of this viscerae were collected, fixed and histologically prepared, and the samples analyzed through light microscopy and through the histomorphometry of the uterine layers. Topographycally, the uterus of this rodent is located on the sub lumbar area, caudally to the kidneys, and following the ovaries and uterine horns, getting through the pelvic entrance, where it is located dorsally to the bladder. It is characterized as a double uterus, although there is only an external cervical os. Microscopically, the uterine mucous is formed by epithelial elevations, from cylindrical to pseudostratified epithelium, which is supported by a loose connective tissue where endometrial glands covered by cylindrical epithelium can be observed, besides blood vessels. The muscle layer is subdivided in inner or submuscous, median or vascular and outer or subserous. The serous layer is composed of a connective tissue and mesothelium. In the histomorphometry analysis, the total uterine thickness and the mucous layer thickness, in average, were bigger on non nulliparous females.
