RESUMO Este estudo analisou um biomaterial substituto ósseo recentemente desenvolvido feito de óxido de quitosana- xantana-hidroxiapatita-grafeno (CXHAG). As partículas CXHAG observaram caracterização estrutural e morfológica in vitro. Foi testado in vivo, com ou sem meio condicionado osteogênico de células-tronco mesenquimais. Objetivo O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar se o novo biomaterial CXHAG, suplementado com meio condicionado de células-tronco mesenquimais, poderia ser útil para a regeneração óssea. Materiais e Método Para o estudo in vitro, as células foram incubadas com 20mg de grânulos de CXHAG por 24 horas e foi realizado ensaio de MTT para verificar a citotoxicidade. Para o estudo in vivo, foram criados defeitos ósseos de tamanho crítico na calvária em vinte e cinco ratos. Um animal teve o defeito não preenchido (Grupo Controle – GC) e foi eutanasiado após 42 dias. Doze ratos receberam as partículas CXHAG (Grupo 1 – G1) e os outros doze receberam as partículas CXHAG suplementadas com o meio condicionado (Grupo 2 – G2). Todos os enxertos G1/G2 foram cobertos com membrana CXHAG. Os animais do G1/G2 foram eutanasiados após 14 dias (T1) ou 42 dias (T2). Os espécimes foram processados e avaliados histologicamente. Resultados A análise SEM das partículas CXHAG mostrou grânulos de 300-400μm, com superfície áspera e irregular. Eles não foram citotóxicos para células-tronco da polpa dentária in vitro. As amostras CG mostraram tecido conjuntivo imaturo frouxo e nenhuma formação óssea no centro do defeito. G1 e G2 apresentaram partículas remanescentes de biomateriais em ambos os momentos, mas apenas G2 apresentou formação óssea no centro do defeito. Conclusões O meio condicionado teve repercussões positivas na regeneração óssea em defeitos críticos de calvária de ratos quando associado ao novo biomaterial substituto ósseo.

ABSTRACT This study analyzed a recently developed bone substitute biomaterial made of chitosan-xanthanhydroxyapatite- graphene oxide (CXHAG). The CXHAG particles underwent in vitro structural and morphological characterization, and in vivo testing with or without osteogenic conditioned medium from mesenchymal stem cells. Aim The aim of this study was to determine whether the CXHAG novel biomaterial, supplemented with conditioned medium from mesenchymal stem cells, could be useful for bone regeneration. Materials and Method For the in vitro study, cells were incubated with 20mg of CXHAG granules for 24 hours and a MTT assay was performed to tests for cytotoxicity. For the in vivo study, critical size calvarial bone defects were created in twenty-five rats. One animal had the defect unfilled (Control Group–CG) and was euthanized after 42 days. Twelve rats received the CXHAG particles (Group 1–G1) and the other twelve received the CXHAG particles supplemented with the conditioned medium (Group 2–G2). All G1/G2 grafts were covered with a CXHAG membrane. G1/G2 animals were euthanized after 14 days (T1) or 42 days (T2). The specimens were processed and histologically evaluated. Results SEM analysis of the CXHAG particles showed granules of 300-400μm, with a rough irregular surface. They were not cytotoxic to dental pulp stem cells in vitro. The CG specimen showed loose immature connective tissue and no bone formation at the center of the defect. G1 and G2 presented remnant biomaterial particles at both time points, but only G2 had bone formation at the center of the defect. Conclusions The conditioned medium had a positive effect on bone regeneration in rat calvarial critical size defects when associated with the novel bone substitute biomaterial.

Abstract (Introduction): The Caribbean slope of Central America is located windward about the trade winds associated with the North Atlantic Subtropical High and the rains present a bimodal annual cycle, observing a relative minimum in the months of September and October. (Objective): Characterize the observed decrease in rainfall in this region for this bimester, estimating for each event, the variables associated with the values of the onset day, minimum day, demise day, duration, intensity, and magnitude, in 1979-2010. (Methodology): A set of 31 daily records from rain gauge stations was used. In each of them, the months from July to November were examined to find the values of the minimum, the date of the minimum, the onset and the demise, duration, and intensity. The occurrence of any temporal or spatial trend in these characteristics of the events was explored. Finally, different climatic indices and documentary sources were reviewed to identify the possible synoptic causes of the strongest decreases in rainfall. (Results): The beginning of the events was observed around September 3rd, their minimum on September 23rd and the end on October 12th, with an approximate duration of 39 days. Events tend to happen earlier at stations located northwest on the isthmus. The driest events occurred under favorable conditions for the occurrence of winds with a southwest-west component over the region. (Conclusions): Knowledge about these characteristics of precipitation helps in the activity planning of key socioeconomic sectors in Central America in case of adverse hydrometeorological events.

Resumen (Introducción): La vertiente Caribe de América Central se encuentra a barlovento de los vientos alisios asociados con la Alta Subtropical del Atlántico Norte y presenta un ciclo anual de precipitación bimodal, donde se observa un mínimo relativo en los meses de septiembre y octubre. (Objetivo): Caracterizar el descenso observado en las lluvias en esta región en ese bimestre, estimando, para cada evento, las variables asociadas con los valores del día del inicio, día del mínimo, día del final, duración, intensidad y magnitud, en el periodo 1979-2010. (Metodología): Se usaron 31 registros diarios de estaciones pluviométricas. Se examinó, en cada una de ellas, los meses de julio a noviembre, para encontrar los valores del mínimo, la fecha del mínimo, del inicio y del final, duración e intensidad. Se exploró la ocurrencia de alguna tendencia temporal o espacial en las características de los eventos. Por último, se revisaron diferentes índices climáticos y fuentes documentales para identificar las posibles causas sinópticas de los descensos más fuertes en las lluvias. (Resultados): El inicio de los eventos se observó alrededor del 3 de septiembre, su mínimo el 23 de septiembre y el final 12 de octubre, con una duración aproximada de 39 días. Los eventos tienden a suceder primeramente en las estaciones ubicadas al noroeste del istmo. Los eventos más secos sucedieron bajo condiciones propicias para la ocurrencia de vientos con componente suroeste-oeste sobre la región. (Conclusiones): El conocimiento sobre estas características de la precipitación ayuda en la planificación de sectores socioeconómicos claves en América Central ante eventuales eventos hidrometeorológicos adversos.

ABSTRACT Introduction: COVID-19 is a viral infectious disease caused by SARS-CoV-2, a new coronavirus identified in China in December 2019. Objective: To clinically and radiologically characterize COVID-19 in infants. Methods: A descriptive observational study was conducted with 72 infants in which the disease was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction test in the period from May to September 2021. The choice of medical records was made probabilistically by simple random sampling, according to income. Results: Males (58.3%) and infants older than 6 months of age (52.8%) prevailed. Only three children (8.8%) were exclusively breastfed, in contrast to those who were artificially breastfed (61.8%). 29.1% of patients were asymptomatic, while fever (65.2%) and runny nose (34.7%) were the most common manifestations. Radiographic findings appeared in 27.7% of patients, with clinical-radiological discordance. Conclusions: It is concluded that children under one year of age seem to have a lower risk of becoming seriously ill with COVID-19 than older children.

RESUMEN Introducción: La COVID-19 es una enfermedad infecciosa viral producida por el SARS-CoV-2, un nuevo coronavirus identificado en China en diciembre de 2019. Objetivo: Caracterizar clínica y radiológicamente la COVID-19 en lactantes. Métodos: Se realizó un estudio observacional descriptivo con 72 lactantes en los cuales se confirmó la enfermedad mediante la reacción en cadena de la polimerasa en el período de mayo a septiembre de 2021. La elección de las historias clínicas se realizó de forma probabilística por muestreo simple aleatorio, conforme los ingresos. Resultados: Prevaleció el sexo masculino (58,3 %) y los lactantes mayores de 6 meses de edad (52,8 %). Solo tres niños (8,8 %) recibían lactancia materna exclusiva, contrastando con aquellos lactados de manera artificial (61,8 %). El 29,1 % de los pacientes fueron asintomáticos, mientras que la fiebre (65,2 %) y la secreción nasal (34,7 %) fueron las manifestaciones más presentadas. Los hallazgos radiográficos aparecieron en el 27,7 % de los enfermos, con discordancia clínico-radiológica. Conclusiones: Se concluye que los niños menores de un año parecen tener menor riesgo de enfermar de gravedad con la COVID 19 que los niños mayores.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Understanding the intricate dynamics between different waves of the COVID-19 pandemic and the corresponding variations in clinical outcomes is essential for informed public health decision-making. Comprehensive insights into these fluctuations can guide resource allocation, healthcare policies, and the development of effective interventions. This study aimed to compare the characteristics and clinical outcomes of COVID-19 at peak transmission points by including all patients attended during the first four pandemic waves in a referral center in Colombia. Material and methods: In a prospective observational study of 2733 patients, clinical and demographic data were extracted from the Fundacion Valle de Lili's COVID-19 Registry, focusing on ICU admission, Invasive Mechanical Ventilation (IMV), length of hospital stay, and mortality. Results: Our analysis unveiled substantial shifts in patient care patterns. Notably, the proportion of patients receiving glucocorticoid therapy and experiencing secondary infections exhibited a pronounced decrease across waves (p < 0.001). Remarkably, there was a significant reduction in ICU admissions (62.83% vs. 51.23% vs. 58.23% vs. 46.70 %, p < 0.001), Invasive Mechanical Ventilation (IMV) usage (39.25% vs. 32.22% vs. 31.22% vs. 21.55 %, p < 0.001), and Length of Hospital Stay (LOS) (9 vs. 8 vs. 8 vs. 8 days, p < 0.001) over the successive waves. Surprisingly, hospital mortality remained stable at approximately 18-20 % (p > 0.05). Notably, vaccination coverage with one or more doses surged from 0 % during the initial waves to 66.71 % in the fourth wave. Conclusions: Our findings emphasize the critical importance of adapting healthcare strategies to the evolving dynamics of the pandemic. The reduction in ICU admissions, IMV utilization, and LOS, coupled with the rise in vaccination rates, underscores the adaptability of healthcare systems. Hospital mortality's persistence may warrant further exploration of treatment strategies. These insights can inform public health responses, helping policymakers allocate resources effectively and tailor interventions to specific phases of the pandemic. Abstract Background Members of the β-subfamily of connexins contain an intracellular pocket surrounded by amino acid residues from the four transmembrane helices. The presence of this pocket has not previously been investigated in members of the α-, γ-, δ-, and ε-subfamilies. We studied connexin50 (Cx50) as a representative of the α-subfamily, because its structure has been determined and mutations of Cx50 are among the most common genetic causes of congenital cataracts. Methods To investigate the presence and function of the intracellular pocket in Cx50 we used molecular dynamics simulation, site-directed mutagenesis, gap junction tracer intercellular transfer, and hemichannel activity detected by electrophysiology and by permeation of charged molecules. Results Employing molecular dynamics, we determined the presence of the intracellular pocket in Cx50 hemichannels and identified the amino acids participating in its formation. We utilized site-directed mutagenesis to alter a salt-bridge interaction that supports the intracellular pocket and occurs between two residues highly conserved in the connexin family, R33 and E162. Substitution of opposite charges at either position decreased formation of gap junctional plaques and cell–cell communication and modestly reduced hemichannel currents. Simultaneous charge reversal at these positions produced plaque-forming non-functional gap junction channels with highly active hemichannels. Conclusions These results show that interactions within the intracellular pocket influence both gap junction channel and hemichannel functions. Disruption of these interactions may be responsible for diseases associated with mutations at these positions.

RESUMEN La lidocaína es el anestésico local más utilizado a nivel mundial para la cirugía de catarata. También se usa de manera común en otras intervenciones quirúrgicas oftalmológicas del segmento anterior, la superficie del globo ocular, los párpados y vías lagrimales, así como en el segmento posterior del ojo. Esta revisión pretende brindar una actualización sobre las principales características, los efectos y vías de administración de la lidocaína usada en la oftalmología. Se realizó una búsqueda sistemática sobre el tema en publicaciones científicas indexadas en bases de datos, cuya información recopilada se resumió en este trabajo. La lidocaína se presenta en múltiples formas farmacéuticas, con variedad en concentración y formulación. Por lo general, para inyección se usan las concentraciones al 0,5 %, 1 % y 2 %, para anestesia tópica en gel al 2 % y en solución oftálmica al 4 %. Su efecto como anestésico local es bien conocido, a nivel ocular se puede conseguir a través de inyecciones perioculares e intraoculares o mediante su aplicación tópica. Este efecto anestésico de la lidocaína ofrece cierta capacidad de dilatación pupilar, el cual se ha estudiado y aprovechado con frecuencia en los últimos años. Hoy día se encuentran en estudio otros efectos de la lidocaína a nivel local y sistémico. Los usos de la lidocaína en la oftalmología actual, están respaldados fundamentalmente por su eficacia y seguridad comprobadas en el tiempo.

ABSTRACT Lidocaine is the most widely used local anesthetic worldwide for cataract surgery. It is also commonly used in other ophthalmic surgical procedures of the anterior segment, surface of the eyeball, eyelids and lacrimal ducts, as well as in the posterior segment of the eye. This review aims to provide an update on the main characteristics, effects and ways of administering lidocaine used in ophthalmology. A systematic search on the subject was carried out in scientific publications indexed in databases, the information collected was summarized in this work. Lidocaine comes in multiple pharmaceutical forms, with a variety of concentrations and formulations. Generally, 0.5%, 1% and 2% concentrations are used for injection, 2% for topical anesthesia in gel and 4% in ophthalmic solution. Its effect as a local anesthetic is well known, at ocular level it can be achieved through periocular and intraocular injections or by topical application. This anesthetic effect of lidocaine offers some pupillary dilation capacity, which has been frequently studied and exploited in recent years. Other local and systemic effects of lidocaine are currently under study. The uses of lidocaine in ophthalmology today are supported primarily by its time-tested efficacy and safety.

Abstract Transrectal ultrasonography is a technology used in cattle reproductive management as a means of gestation diagnosis and estrous cycle monitoring. Likewise, it has application in the management, diagnosis and treatment of both reproductive processes and in reproductive biotechnology programs. The objective of the work was to carry out a bibliographic review on the reproductive processes in cows and the ultrasonography use. A bibliographic review was carried out including publications from 2022 and previous years. Criteria that support the development achieved in the use of ultrasound were considered, based on the logical analysis of the consulted bibliography. The keywords used were ultrasonography, ultrasound, cattle, bovine reproduction, transrectal palpation, estrous cycle, follicular dynamics, ovarian function, Doppler, corpus luteum functionality, early pregnancy diagnosis, embryonic death. Transrectal ultrasonography has increased our knowledge and understanding of bovine reproductive physiology. Technological advances have allowed its use in the reproductive management of cattle to increase. Ultrasonography is a revolutionary advance in research that has influenced the efficiency of cow reproductive management.

Resumen La ultrasonografía transrectal es una tecnología utilizada en el manejo reproductivo de los bovinos como medio del diagnóstico de gestación y de seguimiento del ciclo estral. Asimismo, tiene aplicación en el manejo, diagnóstico y tratamiento tanto de procesos reproductivos como en programas de biotecnología reproductiva. El objetivo del trabajo fue realizar una revisión bibliográfica sobre los procesos reproductivos en vacas y el uso de la ultrasonografía. Se realizó una revisión bibliográfica incluyendo publicaciones del 2022 y años previos. Se consideraron criterios que sustentan el desarrollo alcanzado en el uso de ultrasonido, basados en el análisis lógico de la bibliografía consultada. Las palabras clave utilizadas fueron ultrasonografía, ecografía, bovinos, reproducción bovina, palpación transrectal, ciclo estral, dinámica folicular, función ovárica, Doppler, funcionalidad del cuerpo lúteo, diagnóstico precoz de la preñez, muerte embrionaria. La ultrasonografía transrectal ha aumentado nuestro conocimiento y comprensión de la fisiología de la reproducción del bovino. Los avances tecnológicos han permitido que su empleo en el manejo reproductivo del ganado bovino se incremente. La ultrasonografía es un avance revolucionario en la investigación que ha influenciado la eficiencia en el manejo reproductivo de la vaca.

ABSTRACT The business management performed by public officials is an activity whose results are measured by the degree of social welfare it generates, and is related to the significant application of managerial skills and simultaneous control, this work aims to show the effects produced by the management performed by officials in the periods 2020-2022 in Peru and simultaneous control in 2022, showing whether they generated social welfare and economic growth, as they constitute one of the processes of greatest impact in any country, and what measures the control body is applying within its scope of application. The research had a qualitative-inductive approach, phenomenological design, the sample consisted of 5 participants and an in-depth interview with open questions was used. Results: It was corroborated that officials, according to their profile and knowledge of management skills, generate positive and negative effects in the creation of the social welfare of the population and the control organ contributes, through simultaneous control, to the achievement of efficiency and effectiveness of public management. Conclusion: It is indispensable to have officials with competencies in managerial skills, probity, social responsibility and values, as long as the related institutions develop planned training actions, constant training and also control actions for a good use of resources.

RESUMEN La gestión empresarial que realizan los funcionarios públicos es una actividad cuyos resultados se miden con el grado de bienestar social que genera, y está relacionada con la aplicación significativa de habilidades directivas y el control simultáneo, este trabajo tiene como objetivo mostrar los efectos producidos por las gestiones realizadas por funcionarios en los periodos 2020-2022 en Perú y el control simultáneo en 2022, mostrando si generaron bienestar social y crecimiento económico, ya que constituyen uno de los procesos de mayor impacto en todo país, y qué medidas viene aplicando el órgano de control dentro de su ámbito de aplicación. La investigación tuvo un enfoque cualitativo-inductivo, diseño fenomenológico, la muestra estuvo conformada por 5 participantes y se utilizó la entrevista a profundidad con preguntas abiertas. Resultados: Se corroboró que los funcionarios según su perfil y conocimiento de habilidades directivas, generan efectos positivos y negativos en la creación del bienestar social de la población y el órgano de control coadyuva, mediante el control simultáneo al logro de la eficiencia y eficacia de la gestión pública. Conclusión: Es indispensable tener funcionarios con competencias en habilidades directivas, probos, con responsabilidad social y con valores, siempre y cuando las instituciones relacionadas desarrollen acciones planificadas de formación, capacitación constante y también acciones de control para un buen uso de los recursos.

Resumen: El objetivo fue identificar la localización intervertebral de bloqueos neuroaxiales instalados por técnica de palpación de referencias anatómicas por ultrasonido. Para esto se realizó un estudio observacional descriptivo, transversal y analítico con 35 pacientes del Hospital Sanatorio Durango entre 18 y 60 años de edad sometidos a cirugía electiva con ASA I-III. Posterior a la eliminación de residuos anestésicos realizamos rastreo ultrasonográfico. El análisis incluyó frecuencias, proporciones, media, desviación estándar (DE), OR, OR de prevalencia con IC 95%, prueba t de Student, χ2 y χ2 de tendencia (p < 0.05). La correspondencia fue de 34.3%. Peso, talla e índice de masa corporal (IMC), clasificación de IMC; posición para bloqueo y tipo de bloqueo neuroaxial no tuvieron significancia estadística (p > 0.05). En pacientes sin correspondencia hubo localización cefálica en 73.9%. Por ultrasonido las localizaciones sin correspondencia fueron fueron L1-L2: 39.13%, L2-L3: 26.1%, L3-L4: 17.4%, dos niveles: 13.04 y T12-L4: 4.35%. Se concluye que para esta muestra, la precisión para la identificación del espacio intervertebral mediante la técnica es mala, por lo que el uso de ultrasonido puede mejorar la instalación. Es importante esta línea de investigación, ya que la mejora continua de las técnicas anestésicas mejorarán el pronóstico de los pacientes operados.

Abstract: This article aims to identify the intervertebral localization by ultrasound of neuraxial blocks installed by palpation technique of anatomical references. To this end, a descriptive, cross-sectional, analytical observational study was conducted with 35 patients from the Hospital Sanatorio Durango between 18 and 60 years undergoing elective surgery with ASA I-III. After the elimination of the anesthetic residue, we performed ultrasonographic tracking. The analysis included frequencies, proportions, mean and SD, OR, and prevalence OR with 95% CI, T trend t χ2 and χ2 test (p < 0.05). Correspondence was 34.3%. Weight, height, BMI, BMI categories, position for blocking, and type of neuroaxial blockade did not have statistical significance (p > 0.05). In patients without correspondence, we found that 73.9% had cephalic localization. Using ultrasound, those without correspondence were L1-L2: 39.13%, L2-L3: 26.1%, L3-L4: 17.4%, two levels: 13.04 and T12-L4: 4.35%. For this sample, the accuracy of the identification of the intervertebral space by the technique is poor, so the use of ultrasound can improve the installation. This type of research is essential since the continuous enhancement of anesthetic techniques will improve the prognosis of operated patients.

Resumen Los cultivos en el estado de Campeche se están intensificando, esto ocasiona transformaciones en las propiedades fisicoquímicas y biológicas del suelo. El objetivo fue determinar el efecto de los agroecosistemas sobre la macrofauna edáfica y las propiedades del suelo. Se tomaron 10 puntos de muestreo por agroecosistema, con tres repeticiones cada. Los sitios se escogieron de acuerdo con el uso agropecuarios (pastizal, monte, agrícola intensivo y tradicional) y tiempo de uso (≥8 años). Se tomó 1 kg de cada muestra a 20 cm de profundidad, colocadas posteriormente en bolsas de polietileno. Se determinó pH, conductividad eléctrica, materia orgánica, fósforo disponible, nitrógeno total y macrofauna edáfica. Con los datos de cada variable se realizó un análisis de varianza y para determinar las diferencias entre usos de suelo y sitios, se efectuó una prueba de medias según el estadístico de Tukey (p≤ 0.05), mediante el software Statistica versión 7.1. El agroecosistema Pastizal de Palizada presentó las mejores características en los suelos, con pH de 7.29, P, MO, N de 1.31 mg kg-1, 5.05% y 0.31%, respectivamente y fauna edáfica con 66 individuos. El agroecosistema con menor calidad en el suelo fue cultivos intensivos de Hopelchén, con pH moderadamente ácidos (6.44), mayor cantidad de P (33.42 mg kg-1), menor MO (2.59%) y contenidos elevados de N (0.23%) y sin macrofauna edáfica. El manejo del suelo en los agroecosistemas agrícolas no favorece la presencia de macrofauna edáfica ni mantiene los nutrientes necesarios para el buen funcionamiento y calidad de suelo.

Abstract Crops in the state of Campeche are intensifying, this causes transformations in the physicochemical and biological properties of the soil. The objective was to determine the effect of agroecosystems on soil macrofauna and soil properties. Ten sampling points per agroecosystem were taken, with three repetitions each. The sites were chosen according to the agricultural use (grassland, forest, intensive and traditional agricultural) and time of use (≥8 years). One kilogram from each sample was taken at a depth of 20 cm, then placed in polyethylene bags. The pH, electrical conductivity, organic matter, available phosphorus, total nitrogen and soil macrofauna were determined. With the data of each variable, an analysis of variance was performed and to determine the differences between land uses and sites, a mean test was carried out according to the Tukey statistic (p≤ 0.05), using the software Statistica version 7.1. The grassland agroecosystem of Palizada presented the best characteristics in the soils, with pH of 7.29, P, OM, N of 1.31 mg kg-1, 5.05% and 0.31%, respectively and soil fauna with 66 individuals. The agroecosystem with the lowest soil quality was intensive crops of Hopelchén, with moderately acidic pHs (6.44), higher amount of P (33.42 mg kg-1), lower OM (2.59%) and high N contents (0.23%) and without soil macrofauna. Soil management in agricultural agroecosystems does not favor the presence of soil macrofauna nor does it maintain the nutrients necessary for the proper functioning and quality of the soil.

Abstract This report describes a fatal case of mucosal disease in a two-year-old bull. For causal agent detection, scab, whole blood, and feces samples were tested by RT-PCR, PCR, ELISA, and viral isolation. RT-PCR positive amplification was obtained in blood samples for bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV). Viral isolation from the scab samples confirmed BVDV as the causative agent of the clinical manifestations. Subsequently, genetic characterization based on phylogenetic analysis of three partial sequences revealed the presence of BVDV subgenotype 1b in analyzed samples. Due to the development of clinical manifestation named mucosal disease, these findings suggest the detection of BVDV persistently infected (PI) bull; therefore, these results demonstrate the importance of establishing BVDV control programs that rely on testing the presence of PI in cattle from Mexico.

Resumen El virus de la diarrea viral bovina (VDVB) genera pérdidas significativas en la producción de bovinos. Se reporta sobre un caso fatal de la enfermedad de las mucosas en un toro de dos años. Para la detección del agente causal, se analizaron muestras de lesiones, de sangre completa y de heces mediante el RT-PCR, PCR, ELISA y aislamiento viral. Se obtuvo amplificación positiva por RT-PCR en muestras de sangre para el virus de la diarrea viral bovina (VDVB). El aislamiento viral de las muestras de las lesiones confirmó que el VDVB fue el agente causal de las manifestaciones clínicas. Una caracterización genética basada en el análisis filogenético de tres secuencias parciales identificó la presencia del subgenotipo 1b del VDVB en las muestras analizadas. El animal muestreado manifestaba signos clínicos indicando que tenía la enfermedad de las mucosas, lo cual sugiere que sufría de una infección persistente (IP) por VDVB. Este hallazgo resalta la importancia de establecer programas de control de VDVB basados en probar la presencia de IP en el ganado de México.

Resumen (analítico) La metacognición se define como un proceso reflexivo que permite a las personas monitorear, controlar y autorregular su comportamiento. Sin embargo, la metacognición rara vez se ha estudiado con variables más allá del contexto educativo, como variables sociales, conductuales o clínicas. Así, el propósito del presente estudio fue explorar la relación entre las variables sociales y la conciencia metacognitiva subjetiva y si estas mismas variables sociales predicen componentes de la conciencia metacognitiva (conocimiento y regulación de la cognición). Con una muestra de estudiantes universitarios (N = 246), los resultados revelaron que no solo existen correlaciones significativas entre algunas variables sociales y ambos componentes de la conciencia metacognitiva, sino que esas mismas variables sociales predijeron la conciencia metacognitiva. Se discuten las implicaciones de estos resultados en contextos educativos y clínicos.

Abstract (analytical) Metacognition is defined as a higher-order reflective process that allows individuals to monitor, control, and self-regulate their behavior. However, metacognition has rarely been studied with variables beyond the educational context such as social, behavioral and clinical variables. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between social variables and subjective metacognitive aware-ness and whether these same social variables can predict components of metacognitive awareness (knowledge and regulation of cognition). Working with a sample of university students (N = 246), the results of this study identified that there were not only significant correlations between some social variables and both components of metacognitive awareness, but that those same social variables could predict metacognitive awareness. Implications for these outcomes in educational and clinical contexts are discussed.

Resumo (analítico) A metacognição é definida como um processo reflexivo de ordem superior que permite às pessoas monitorar, controlar e autorregular seu comportamento. No entanto, a metacognição raramente foi estudada com variáveis fora do contexto educacional, como variáveis sociais, comportamentais ou clínicas. Assim, o objetivo do presente estudo foi explorar a relação entre as variáveis sociais e a consciência metacognitiva subjetiva e se essas mesmas variáveis sociais predizem os componentes da consciência metacognitiva (conhecimento e regulação da cognição). Com uma amostra de estudantes universitários (N = 246), os resultados revelaram que não apenas existem correlações significativas entre algumas variáveis sociais e ambos os componentes da consciência metacognitiva, mas que essas mesmas variáveis sociais predizem a consciência metacognitiva. As implicações desses resultados em contextos educacionais e clínicos são discutidas.

ABSTRACT Introduction: This paper focuses on the synthesis, physicochemical characterization, bioactivity evaluation, and innovative applications of new biohybrid nanomaterials. Sepiolite is a nanofibrous natural silicate that represents a very attractive nanocarrier for nucleic acids delivery into cells, among other innovative applications in life sciences and biotechnology. Methods: The physicochemical characterization and the bioactivity evaluation of biohybrids were performed using advanced techniques and procedures, including AFM, TEM, Confocal Microscopy, TLVM, FTIR, Z-potential measurements, UV-vis, FACS, Western blot, RT-qPCR, among others. Results: New biohybrids were obtained, based on the assembly of nucleic acids with sepiolite nanofibers. The mechanisms of cell internalization and response to sepiolite exposure were proposed. We demonstrated that sepiolite is a promising nanocarrier for the non-viral and stable transfer of plasmid DNA into bacteria, mammalian and human cells, with an optimized efficiency. Due to its ability to bind various biomolecules, sepiolite could be used as a nanocarrier for the simultaneous vectorization of diverse biological molecules, including proteins, nucleases and antibodies. In addition, we obtain new protocols for both, strongly improving bacterial transformation efficiency, and to extract plasmids from bacteria, in a rapid, convenient and inexpensive method that doesn't require competent cell preparation, representing an advantageous alternative to onerous commercial kits. As a conclusion, Because of the low cost of sepiolite, its low toxicity, its natural fluorescence, the ease and convenience of sepiolite/DNA synthesis methods, the possibilities of improving the transfection efficiency and additional enticing future developments, sepiolite represents a very attractive nanoplatform for potential applications in nanomedicine and nanobiotechnology.

RESUMEN Introducción: Este trabajo se centró en la síntesis, caracterización físicoquímica, evaluación de su bioactividad y aplicaciones biomédicas de nuevos nanomateriales biohíbridos. La sepiolita es un silicato natural nanofibroso que presenta atractivas características como nanoportador para la liberación de ácidos nucleicos en células, entre otras aplicaciones innovadoras en el área de las ciencias de la vida y de la biotecnología. Métodos: La caracterización físico-química y evaluación biológica de los biohíbridos fue realizada usando procedimientos y técnicas novedosas, incluyendo entre otras AFM, TEM, microscopía confocal, TLVM, FTIR, Potencial Zeta, UV-vis, FACS, Western-blot, RT- qPCR. Resultados: Se obtuvieron nuevos biohíbridos mediante ensamblado de ácidos nucleicos con nanofibras de sepiolita. Se propusieron sus mecanismos de internalización y respuesta celular. Demostramos que la sepiolita es un nanoportador prometedor para la transferencia estable no-viral de ADN plasmídico en bacterias, células de mamíferos y humanas, con eficiencia optimizada. Debido a su capacidad de anclar varias biomoléculas, la sepiolita constituye también un nanoportador para la vectorización simultánea de diferentes moléculas biológicas, incluyendo proteínas, nucleasas y anticuerpos. Adicionalmente, obtuvimos nuevos protocolos para aumentar significativamente la eficiencia de transformación bacterial, y para la extracción de ADN de bacterias, mediante métodos rápidos, seguros y económicos que no requieren la preparación de células competentes, representando una ventajosa alternativa a los costosos kits comerciales. En conclusión, la sepiolita es un producto de bajo costo, baja toxicidad y fluorescencia natural, con facilidad y conveniencia en métodos de síntesis de biohíbridos sepiolita/ADN, con posibilidad de aumentar su eficiencia de transfección, que junto a potenciales desarrollos futuros, representa una atractiva nanoplataforma para aplicaciones en nanomedicina y nanobiotecnología.

ABSTRACT Introduction: The dengue case classifications proposed by World Health Organization (WHO, 2009) include warning signs (WS) for recognizing early progression of disease toward the critical phase. Objective: To analyze the usefulness WS and challenges of the 2009 WHO dengue case classification in preventing and managing severe dengue cases. Methods: Data from 1439 adult patients diagnosed as dengue cases (2001-2002, 2006, 2012) at the Pedro Kourí Institute Hospital, in Havana Cuba, was revised. The WS were described and their predictive utility was considered in preventing shock in these patients with the use of crystalloids by calculating the sensitivity, specificity and positive / negative predictive values using both the 1997 and 2009 WHO dengue case classifications. Results: Plasma-leakage with shock was the main clinical form of severe dengue (95.3%). All severe cases due to plasma leakage had WS. The most frequent WS were mucosal bleeding (926 cases; 64.4%), frequent vomiting (361; 39.0%), abdominal pain or tenderness (404; 35.5%) and prostration (408; 28.4%). Mucosal bleeding and abdominal pain were good predictors of severity, appearing one day before shock. More than 75% of patients without WS there were not severe dengue. Most patients with warning signs were managed correctly and had an uneventful recovery. Conclusions: Identifying the WS recommended by WHO 2009 classification for crystalloid intravenous fluid treatment was crucial for the successful outcome of dengue cases.

RESUMEN Introducción: La clasificación de dengue propuesta por la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) en el 2019 incluye los signos de alarma (SA) para reconocer la rápida progresión de la enfermedad a la fase crítica. Objetivo: Analizar la utilidad de los SA y los retos de la clasificación de la OMS de 2009 para la prevención y manejo de los casos graves de dengue. Métodos: Se obtuvo información de 1439 pacientes adultos diagnosticados como casos de dengue (años: 2001-2002, 2006, 2012) en el Hospital del Instituto Pedro Kourí, en La Habana, Cuba. Se describieron los SA y se consideró su utilidad en la prevención del choque con el uso de soluciones cristaloides mediante el cálculo de la sensibilidad, especificidad y los valores positivo y negativo a partir de las clasificaciones de la OMS de 1997 y 2009. Resultados: La extravasación de plasma con choque fue la forma clínica principal del dengue grave (95,3 %). Todos los casos graves debido a extravasación de plasma manifestaron SA. Los SA más frecuentes fueron el sangrado de mucosas (926 casos; 64,4 %), los vómitos frecuentes (361; 39,0 %), el dolor abdominal espontáneo o a la palpación (404; 35,5 %) y la postración (408; 28,4 %). El sangrado de mucosas y el dolor abdominal fueron buenos predictores de gravedad (aparecieron un día antes del choque). Más del 75 % de los pacientes sin SA no tenían dengue grave. La mayoría de los pacientes con SA fueron tratados correctamente y se recuperaron sin complicaciones. Conclusiones: La identificación de SA recomendada por la clasificación de OMS de 2009 para el tratamiento con cristaloides fue crucial para la evolución exitosa de los casos de dengue.

Resumen El objetivo del presente artículo consiste en caracterizar el evento extremo del Mega-Niño costero de 1925-1926 en el sur de América Central a partir de una serie de anomalías geofísicas calculadas mediante los registros meteorológicos de estaciones ubicadas en Costa Rica y Panamá. También, indagar sus repercusiones en la sociedad costarricense a través del análisis documental de fuentes primarias oficiales y hemerográficas. Los hallazgos de este artículo permiten afirmar que este Mega-Niño se manifestó en Costa Rica a través de un incremento en la magnitud del viento alisio, temperaturas superficiales del aire y del océano más cálidas de lo usual y una disminución de las precipitaciones respecto a su valor promedio. Asimismo, que el fenómeno tuvo un impacto social ligado a condiciones de sequía; expresado en plagas de langostas, carestías de agua potable, descensos en los rendimientos de las cosechas y prolongaciones en las actividades de veraneo. También, se dio una afección de vientos fuertes y oleaje alto al comercio de cabotaje en el litoral pacífico, así como daños a infraestructuras costeras y urbanas. Se concluye que estas repercusiones sociales se concentraron a una escala local del país, y fueron moderadas en los distintos sitios de afección.

Abstract The objective of this article is to characterize the extreme event of the coastal Mega-Niño of 1925-1926 in Southern Central America from a series of geophysical anomalies calculated from meteorological records of stations located in Costa Rica and Panama. In addition, to inquire its repercussions on Costa Rican society through documentary analysis of primary official and newspaper sources. The findings of this article allow to affirm that this Mega-Niño manifested itself in Costa Rica through an increase in the magnitude of the trade wind, warmer than usual surface temperatures of the air and ocean, and a decrease in rainfall compared to its average value. Likewise, this phenomenon had several social impacts linked to drought condition scenarios; expressed in locust plagues, shortages of drinking water, decreases in crop yields and extensions in summer activities. Also, there was an affection of stronger winds and higher waves to the small boat operations on the Pacific coast, as well as damage to coastal and urban infrastructures. It is concluded that these social repercussions were concentrated on a local scale in the country, and were moderate in the different affected sites.
