Abstract In order to understand how mainstream media companies utilise fact-checking services, this paper investigates the following research question: to what extent did the Brazilian agencies Estadão Verifica and Fato ou Fake endeavour to reinforce their epistemic authority through fact-checking during the administrations of Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022) and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (2023-present)? For this examination, all texts published by the two agencies that mentioned Jair Bolsonaro in their titles between January and May 2022 and Lula between January and May 2023 were collected. The corpus consisted of 119 checks (95 from Estadão Verifica and 24 from Fato ou Fake) and was subjected to content analysis. The data indicates that the agencies’ coverage focused on similar issues during the two administrations, with more than half of the publications refuting rumours detrimental to Lula. The results also reveal that the fact-checking process prioritises journalism’s own sources. In other words, Estadão Verifica and Fato ou Fake primarily relied on their own material or that of other mainstream media companies to verify the selected stories - this approach suggests limits to the transparency of the investigation, since much of the information used has already undergone editorial filtering, which is not always clear to the public.

Resumo Com o objetivo de compreender de que modo empresas de comunicação mainstream mobilizam o serviço de verificação de fatos, este trabalho investiga a seguinte questão de pesquisa: em que medida as agências brasileiras Estadão Verifica e Fato ou Fake buscam reforçar sua autoridade epistêmica por meio da checagem de fatos ao longo dos Governos de Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022) e Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (2023-presente)? Para isso, foram coletados todos os textos publicados pelas duas agências que, em seus títulos, mencionaram Jair Bolsonaro, entre janeiro e maio de 2022, e Lula, entre janeiro e maio de 2023. O corpus compreende 119 checagens (95 do Estadão Verifica e 24 do Fato ou Fake) e foi submetido à análise de conteúdo. Os dados indicam que as coberturas das agências se concentraram em assuntos semelhantes durante os dois Governos - sendo que mais de metade das publicações desmentiu boatos prejudiciais a Lula. Os resultados revelam, ainda, que o processo de verificação de fatos dá ênfase a fontes do próprio jornalismo. Isto é, o Estadão Verifica e o Fato ou Fake mobilizaram materiais próprios ou de outras empresas de comunicação mainstream a fim de checar as histórias selecionadas - o que sugere limites à transparência da apuração, uma vez que muitas das informações utilizadas já passaram, anteriormente, por filtros editoriais, nem sempre claros ao público.

Resumo Este trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de analisar os argumentos mobilizados por juízes para justificar a decretação de prisão preventiva, além de observar a existência de relação entre esses argumentos e os fatores de classe e raça. Utilizamos como metodologia a análise documental de decisões interlocutórias que convertem prisões em flagrante em prisões preventivas, referentes a imputações de roubos e furtos ocorridos entre os anos 2015 e 2018 na região metropolitana de Salvador. Foram analisadas 322 decisões interlocutórias de decretação de prisão preventiva, retiradas do arquivo de prontuários do Presídio de Salvador/BA, unidade destinada a presos provisórios. Ao final da pesquisa pode-se concluir que, entre as justificativas vigentes no artigo 312 do Código de Processo Penal, 100% das decisões analisadas se baseavam na categoria de garantia da ordem pública, entendida como harmonia social ofendida pela periculosidade do preso. Essa periculosidade é expressa pelos conceitos de contumácia criminal e modus operandi. Abstract This study aimed to analyze the arguments mobilized by judges to justify the issuance of preventive detention orders and to observe the existence of a relationship between these arguments and class and race factors. The methodology used was the documentary analysis of interlocutory decisions converting flagrant arrests into preventive detentions, referring to charges of theft and robbery that occurred between 2015 and 2018 in the metropolitan region of Salvador, Brazil. A total of 322 interlocutory decisions to decree preventive detention were analyzed, retrieved from the case files of Salvador Prison/BA, a unit for temporary detainees. At the end of the research, it was concluded that, among the justifications in force in Article 312 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 100% of the decisions analyzed were based on the category of guaranteeing public order, understood as social harmony offended by the dangerousness of the prisoner. This dangerousness is expressed by the concepts of criminal recidivism and modus operandi. RESUMO Introdução: Problemas renais podem ser devido apenas ao baixo peso ao nascer ou podem ocorrer em associação com outras condições. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a associação entre características maternas e de nascimento, medidas antropométricas e déficit da função renal em bebês de baixo peso ao nascer. Métodos: Estudo transversal com crianças que nasceram com peso < 2500 gramas e estavam sob acompanhamento ambulatorial. Os fatores maternos investigados foram cuidados pré-natal e presença de hipertensão, diabetes e infecção durante a gravidez. As variáveis das crianças foram sexo, idade gestacional, peso ao nascer, índice Apgar, uso de medicamentos nefrotóxicos, idade, peso corporal no momento da avaliação, altura e dosagens séricas de creatinina e cistatina C. A taxa de filtração glomerular (TFG) foi estimada com a equação combinada de Zapittelli. Utilizou-se um modelo de regressão logística multivariada para identificação de fatores associados, com déficit da função renal (TFG < 60 mL/min/1,73 m2) como variável dependente. Resultados: Das 154 crianças avaliadas, 34,42% apresentaram déficit da função renal. A maioria tinha idade gestacional > 32 semanas (56,6%), peso médio ao nascer de 1439,7 gramas, e TFG média estimada de 46,9 ± 9,3 mL/min/1,73 m2. Houve uma associação significativa da TFG < 60 mL/min/1,73 m2 com o peso atual das crianças e o uso de medicamentos nefrotóxicos. Discussão: Crianças nascidas com baixo peso apresentaram alta prevalência de déficit da função renal e o peso atual normal foi um fator de proteção, enquanto o uso de medicamentos nefrotóxicos durante o período perinatal aumentou a chance de déficit renal. ABSTRACT Introduction: Kidney problems may be due to low birth weight alone or may occur in association with other conditions. The objective this study was to evaluate the association between maternal and birth characteristics, anthropometric measurements, and kidney function deficit in low birth weight infants. Methods: Cross-sectional study with children who were born weighing < 2500 grams and were under outpatient follow-up. Maternal factors investigated were prenatal care and presence of hypertension, diabetes, and infection during pregnancy. The children’s variables were sex, gestational age, birth weight, Apgar score, use of nephrotoxic medications, age, body weight at the time of evaluation, height, and serum creatinine and cystatin C dosages. The glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was estimated with the combined Zapittelli equation. Multivariate logistic regression model was used for identification of associated factors, with renal function deficit (GFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2) as the dependent variable. Results: Of the 154 children evaluated, 34.42% had kidney function deficit. Most of them had a gestational age > 32 weeks (56.6%), a mean birth weight of 1439.7 grams, and mean estimated GFR of 46.9 ± 9.3 mL/min/1.73 m2. There was a significant association of GFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 with children’s current weight and use of nephrotoxic drugs. Discussion: Children born with low birth weight had a high prevalence of kidney function deficit and current normal weight was a protective factor while the use of nephrotoxic drugs during perinatal period increased the chance of kidney deficit. RESUMO: A Pitiose é uma doença causada por oomicetos aquáticos do gênero Pythium. Em cães o curso típico da doença envolve o trato gastrointestinal, caracterizado por espessamento transmural do estômago ou intestinos. No entanto, a infecção por Pythium spp. raramente foi reconhecida como causa de esofagite em caninos. Assim, o presente trabalho tem como objetivo relatar um caso de pitiose esofágica e gástrica em um canino Pit Bull fêmea de oito meses de idade. O cão foi recebido no hospital com histórico de regurgitação e dispneia durante dois meses. Foi relatado que o animal era de um domicílio de área urbana e não possuía histórico pregresso de enfermidades. No exame clínico contatou-se ainda crepitações à ausculta pulmonar. Foi instituído tratamento de suporte e antibioticoterapia, porém após 22 dias de internação, o cão evoluiu para o óbito. Na necropsia, as paredes do segmento distal do esôfago e o cárdia e parte do fundo do estômago estavam expandidos por uma massa anular intramural focalmente extensiva e irregular. ABSTRACT: Pythiosis is the disease caused by aquatic oomycetes of the genus Pythium. In dogs the typical course of the disease involves the gastrointestinal tract, characterized by transmural thickening of the stomach or intestines. However, infection by Pythium spp. has only rarely been recognized as a cause of esophagitis in dogs. Thus, the present reports a case of esophageal and gastric pythiosis in an eight-month-old female pit bull dog. The dog was attended at the hospital after two months presenting regurgitation and dyspnea. It was reported that the dog lived in an urban area and had no previous sanitary issues. At clinical examination it was noted that the dog presented crackling sounds at pulmonary auscultation. A support therapy accompanied by antibiotics has been employed; however, 22 days after hospitalization the clinical condition worsened, and the dog died. At necropsy, the wall of the distal segment of the esophagus and the cardia and part of the fundus of the stomach were expanded by a focal extensive irregular intramural annular mass. Additionally, there was a transmural esophageal fistula. Abstract We investigated the Biogran on bone repair and metabolism at several time-intervals upon grafting into rat tibia artificial defects. The biomaterial was thoroughly characterized in vitro, and its dissolution behavior upon immersion was assessed in simulated body fluid (SBF) solution for 1, 3, 7, 14, and 30 days. Biogran was also assessed by in vitro hydroxyapatite formation in SBF solution, which is a marker for bioactive behavior. In vivo, distal and proximal bone defects were performed in the Wistar rat's right tibia and filled according to the experimental groups: I) negative control, no filling; II) positive control, 10 mg of autogenous bone; and III) 10 mg of Biogran. Animals were euthanized at 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, and 10 weeks. Bone neoformation was analyzed using histomorphometry (proximal defect), and local levels of bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2) were measured using the ELISA assay (distal defect). In vitro, the Biogran sample showed a fast dissolution rate within the first 7 days, parallel to the formation of the hydroxyapatite layer. In vivo, the sample was progressively resorbed at a higher rate within the first month until it became almost absent at week 10th. Abstract This article presents the incorporation of information and communication technologies on the teaching-learning process of geotechnical engineering to improve the quality of education and provide practical knowledge to civil engineering students. The content of this paper is divided into three main modules, which are: Treatment of laboratory tests results, Slope stability and Rock mass stability. For this, some software were used, including 2D limit equilibrium stability analysis, stability analysis of rock wedges and a dynamic mathematics, to obtain and analyze soil shear strength parameters, among others. Furthermore, a digital tool was developed to analyze the results gathered in compaction, one-dimensional consolidation, and direct soil shear tests, in order to clarify the relationship between theoretical concepts and practical results of the tests and analyses and to help students on doubts, in addition to increase their interest and motivation to perform the complete interpretation of the collected data. The activities were conducted in classes of geotechnical disciplines of the undergraduate course in Civil Engineering at the Federal University of Viçosa, aiming to promote active learning and improve teaching quality. RESUMO Diversas pesquisas têm avaliado a aplicabilidade da técnica de auto liberação miofascial (ALM) na melhora aguda da flexibilidade em inúmeros esportes e/ou populações diferentes. No entanto, torna-se difícil sua inserção nas aulas de educação física escolar pelo elevado custo dos materiais. Dessa forma, buscou-se investigar o efeito da ALM em escolares por meio da utilização de rolos de espumas originais e com rolos confeccionados com materiais adaptados de baixo custo. Participaram da pesquisa 30 escolares, que foram aleatoriamente agrupados em: Grupo Controle (GCT), Grupo Rolo Original (GRO) e Grupo Rolo Adaptado (GRA). A flexibilidade foi avaliada antes e após a aplicação da ALM. A ALM foi realizada em músculos alvos uma vez por 30 segundos com intervalos de 15 segundos entre os estímulos. As comparações na flexibilidade pré e pós ALM foram avaliadas utilizando o teste de t student, com nível de significância adotado de p<0,05. Verificou-se que a ALM no GRO e GRA aumentaram agudamente a flexibilidade dos escolares em 7,53 e 16,5%, respectivamente. ABSTRACT Several studies have assessed the applicability of the Myofascial Self-Release Technique (MSRT) in the acute improvement of flexibility in various sports and/or different populations. However, its integration into school physical education classes becomes challenging due to the high cost of materials. Therefore, the aim was to investigate the effect of MSRT on schoolchildren using both original foam rollers and rollers made from low-cost adapted materials. Thirty schoolchildren participated in the study and were randomly grouped into: Control Group (CG), Original Roller Group (ORG), and Adapted Roller Group (ARG). Flexibility was evaluated before and after the application of MSRT. MSRT was performed on target muscles once for 30 seconds with intervals of 15 seconds between stimuli. Comparisons in pre- and post-MSRT flexibility were assessed using the Student's t-test, with a significance level adopted of p <0.05. It was found that MSRT in ORG and ARG significantly increased schoolchildren's flexibility by 7.53% and 16.5%, respectively. Therefore, the use of rollers made with alternative (adapted) material for applying MSRT appears to be a more financially accessible way to be used in physical education classes and opens possibilities for its application beyond schools. RESUMO Contexto: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) é uma bactéria gram-negativa associada à etiologia de várias patologias do trato gastrointestinal, e cepas positivas para cagA (cagA+) são encontradas em populações com úlceras gástricas e lesões pré-cancerígenas, induzindo respostas pró-inflamatórias. O desenvolvimento de neoplasias está relacionado à desregulação do microRNA (miRNA), indicando miRNA-629 altamente expresso. O artigo tem como objetivo correlacionar o nível de expressão do miRNA-629 com a presença de H. pylori e o marcador de patogenicidade cagA. Métodos: Foram avaliadas 203 amostras de biópsia gástrica de indivíduos com tecido gástrico normal (n=60), gastrite (n=96) e câncer gástrico (n=47) de ambos os sexos e com mais de 18 anos. As amostras foram subdivididas de acordo com a presença ou ausência de H. pylori, detectado por reação em cadeia da polimerase (PCR). O RNA foi extraído usando um kit comercial e quantificado. O DNA complementar (cDNA) foi sintetizado usando kits comerciais, e a expressão relativa foi calculada usando o método 2-ΔΔCt. The development of neoplasms is related to microRNA (miRNA) dysregulation, indicating highly expressed miRNA-629. The article aims to correlate the expression level of miRNA-629 with the presence of H. pylori and the pathogenicity marker cagA. Methods: 203 gastric biopsy samples were evaluated from individuals with normal gastric tissue (n=60), gastritis (n=96), and gastric cancer (n=47) of both genders and over 18 years old. The samples were subdivided according to the presence or absence of H. pylori, detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). RNA was extracted using a commercial kit and quantified. Complementary DNA (cDNA) was synthesized using commercial kits, and the relative expression was calculated using the 2-ΔΔCt method. Results: Individuals infected with H. pylori are nine times more likely to develop gastric cancer. Cancer patients appeared to have decreased expression of miRNA-629; however, the presence of the bacterium would not influence this reduction. Individuals in the cancer group showed lower miRNA-629 expression when cagA+; however, in the control group, the expression was higher when cagA+. Conclusion: H. pylori is a factor involved in the etiology and progression of gastric diseases. Reduction in miRNA-629 expression in cancer patients occurs independent of the presence of the bacterium, but when the cagA pathogenicity marker is present, it induces changes in the gene expression of the respective miRNA. RESUMO: A raiva é uma encefalite viral que acomete os mamíferos, incluindo humanos. O diagnóstico laboratorial rápido e eficaz do vírus da raiva é importante para a saúde pública. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a viabilidade operacional, técnica e financeira da RT-qPCR em substituição à inoculação em camundongos para o diagnóstico da raiva na rotina laboratorial. Foram analisadas 316 amostras de cérebros de mamíferos, 121 positivas e 195 negativas, previamente diagnosticadas por imunofluorescência direta (IFD) e isolamento viral em camundongos, por inoculação intracerebral em camundongos. As amostras foram submetidas à técnica duplex TaqMan RT-qPCR. A precisão, sensibilidade e especificidade da RT-qPCR foram analisadas. Os custos para realizar a técnica de RT-qPCR foram analisados e comparados com o custo do isolamento viral em camundongos. Os resultados demostraram 99,37% de acurácia, 99,17% de sensibilidade e 99,49% de especificidade pela RT-qPCR quando relacionada aos resultados de IFD e isolamento viral em camundongos, que se mostrou uma técnica robusta e com repetibilidade. O tempo mínimo para diagnóstico positivo foi reduzido na RT-qPCR (1 dia) quando comparado ao isolamento viral em camundongos (9,64 dias), e com redução de 17,7% no custo pela técnica molecular. ABSTRACT: Rabies is a viral encephalitis that affects mammals, including humans. Rapid and effective laboratory diagnosis of the rabies virus is critical for public health. This study evaluated the operational, technical, and financial viability of the RT-qPCR in replacement of inoculation in mice for diagnosing rabies in the laboratory routine. SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of home-based pelvic floor muscle training in women with urinary incontinence, addressing the difficulties arising from social isolation due to the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic by utilizing a specialized mobile app. METHODS: This randomized, single-group clinical trial aimed to assess the efficacy of pelvic floor muscle training guided by a mobile app (Diario Saúde) in women with stress urinary incontinence. Participants were instructed via telephone to engage in pelvic floor muscle training exercises twice a day for 30 days. Pre- and post-treatment, participants completed validated questionnaires regarding urinary symptoms and quality of life through telephone interviews. Additionally, treatment adherence was evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 156 women were enrolled in the study, with a mean age of 49.3±14.2 years. Significant improvements in urinary incontinence symptoms and quality of life were observed following pelvic floor muscle training guided by the mobile app (p<0.001). Notably, 74.3% of the participants reported performing the exercises with appropriate frequency. Of the participants, 62% reported either complete or substantial improvement in urinary symptoms post-treatment. CONCLUSION: This study revealed notable enhancements in stress urinary incontinence, urinary storage, and overall quality of life subsequent to pelvic floor muscle training guided by a mobile app, particularly during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. Abstract Background Cutaneous melanoma is a neoplasm with a high mortality rate and risk of metastases to distant organs. The Breslow micrometric measurement is considered the most important factor for evaluating prognosis and management, measured from the granular layer to the deepest portion of the neoplasm. Despite its widespread use, the Breslow thickness measurement has some inaccuracies, such as not considering variations in the thickness of the epidermis in different body locations or when there is ulceration. Objective To evaluate the applicability of a modified Breslow measurement, measured from the basal membrane instead of from the granular layer, in an attempt to predict sentinel lymph node examination outcome and survival of patients with melanoma. Methods A retrospective and cross-sectional analysis was carried out based on the evaluation of slides stained with hematoxylin & eosin from 275 cases of melanoma that underwent sentinel lymph node biopsy from 2008 to 2021 at a reference center in Brazil. Results Analysis of the Cox model to evaluate the impact of the Breslow measurement and the modified Breslow measurement on survival showed that both methods are statistically significant. Logistic regression revealed a significant association between both measurements and the presence of metastasis in sentinel lymph nodes. ABSTRACT The hydrodynamic conditions to which hydraulic structures such as spillways and stilling basins of dams are submitted under given conditions favor the occurrence of cavitation, damaging the concrete surfaces. This damage may be intensified by the cumulative effect of the successive hydrologic events that characterize the operational regime of these structures. Thus, the purpose of the present article is to identify the propensity for damage caused by cavitation by using SpillwayPro software to estimate the hydraulic parameters of flow (mean velocities and cavitation indices) based on information on smooth chute spillways at the Furnas, Luiz Carlos Barreto de Carvalho and Batalha hydroelectric power plants. The results shown were compared to the critical limits of cavitation defined in the literature on photographic records of inspections performed in the field. The highest mean velocities estimated coincided with the zones where the worst potential damage of the structures was identified.
