RESUMO Introdução: A cirurgia de avanço mandibular corrige as bases ósseas e estabelece a reabilitação funcional e estética dos pacientes. Entretanto, pouco se sabe sobre os resultados desse procedimento nas estruturas que compõem o sistema estomatognático, como os côndilos. Objetivo: Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar as alterações estruturais e posicionais dos côndilos mandibulares em pacientes ortodôntico-cirúrgicos submetidos à cirurgia de avanço mandibular. Material e Métodos: Foi realizada investigação prospectiva com imagens de tomografia computadorizada de feixe cônico. Utilizando o software Dolphin Imaging®, foram avaliados sete pacientes ortodôntico-cirúrgicos com má oclusão Classe II de Angle e deficiência mandibular. Foram avaliadas imagens da fase pré-cirúrgica e de, no mínimo, um ano após o procedimento. Para estudar as alterações estruturais e posicionais dos côndilos, foram obtidas medidas lineares e angulares e comparados os lados direito e esquerdo dos pacientes. Foi realizada análise estatística descritiva e, para verificar possíveis diferenças significativas, foram aplicados testes de normalidade (Kolmogorov-Smirnov), seguido de teste t pareado, para definição de significância. Resultados: Para nenhuma das medidas avaliadas nesse estudo foram encontradas diferenças estatisticamente significativas. Conclusão: O procedimento ortodôntico-cirúrgico realizado não alterou a estrutura e a posição dos côndilos dos pacientes submetidos à cirurgia de avanço mandibular. ABSTRACT Introduction: Mandibular advancement surgery corrects bone bases while establishing patients’ functional and aesthetic rehabilitation. However, little is known about the results of this procedure in the structures that make up the stomatognathic system, as the condyles. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the structural and positional changes of mandibular condyles in ortho-surgical patients who underwent mandibular advancement surgery. Material and Methods: A prospective investigation was conducted with cone-beam computed tomography images. Using Dolphin Imaging® software, seven ortho-surgical patients with Angle Class II malocclusion and mandibular deficiency were evaluated. The images assessed were obtained at pre-surgical phase and after, at least, 1 year of the procedure. To study the structural and positional changes of condyles, linear and angular measurements were obtained, and the right and left sides of patients were compared. Descriptive statistical analysis was performed and, in order to verify possible significant differences, normality tests (Kolmogorov-Smirnov) were applied, followed by a paired t-test to define significance. Results: For all measures evaluated in this study, no statistically significant differences were found. Conclusion: The ortho-surgical procedure performed did not change the structure and position of the condyles of patients who underwent surgical mandibular advancement. RESUMO Introdução: As mídias sociais melhoraram o acesso às informações, facilitando o compartilhamento de tratamentos odontológicos. Objetivo: O objetivo desse estudo foi realizar uma análise descritiva dos casos clínicos publicados na plataforma Galeria Global Align®. Métodos: Foi realizado um estudo transversal retrospectivo de 1.582 casos, coletando as seguintes informações básicas: número do caso; idade; sexo; modalidade do Invisalign®; tempo de tratamento; protocolo de troca; número total de alinhadores; contenções; radiografias panorâmicas e cefalométricas. Resultados: A maioria dos pacientes era jovem (idade média de 24,6 anos, DP = 11,6), do sexo feminino (69,1%), com má oclusão de Classe I (39,4%) e apinhamento (77,9%). O tratamento “Comprehensive” foi comum (66,5%), com um tempo médio de tratamento de 18 meses (DP = 8,56; IC 95% = 17,6-18,5), sendo que o protocolo de troca de alinhadores mais frequentemente relatado foi o de sete dias (49,5%), com uma média de 50,6 alinhadores na arcada superior (DP = 26,9; IC 95% = 49,2-51,9) e 48,7 na arcada inferior (DP = 26,1; IC 95% = 47,4-50,0). Expansão da arcada (66,9%) e a redução interproximal (59,7%) foram abordagens comuns, enquanto extrações foram raras (4,3%). Na maioria, foram apresentadas radiografias iniciais cefalométricas (80,4%) e panorâmicas (93,3%). No entanto, a contagem de radiografias finais caiu, cefalométrica lateral em 69,2% e a panorâmica em 82,2% dos casos. Conclusão: A Galeria Global Align® apresenta principalmente pacientes de Classe I com dentes apinhados, tratados com expansão e redução interproximal. ABSTRACT Introduction: Social media enhanced access to information, making it easier to share dental treatments. Objective: This study aimed to conduct a descriptive analysis of the clinical cases published on the Align® Global Gallery platform. Material and Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study of 1,582 cases was conducted, data extracted referred to the following basic information: case number; patient’s age; reported gender; Invisalign® package modality; treatment time; aligner exchange protocol; total number of aligners per arch; type of retainers, and inclusion of initial and final panoramic and cephalometric radiographs. Results: The majority were young (mean age 24.6 years, SD = 11.6), female patients (69.1%) with Class I malocclusion (39.4%) and crowding (77.9%). Comprehensive treatment was common (66.5%), with an average treatment time of 18 months (SD = 8.56; 95% CI = 17.6-18.5), with the most frequently reported aligner exchange protocol being 7 days (49.5%), with an average of 50.6 aligners in the upper arch (SD = 26.9; 95% CI = 49.2-51.9), and 48.7 in the lower arch (SD = 26.1; 95% CI = 47.4-50.0). Arch expansion (66.9%) and interproximal reduction (59.7%) were common approaches, while extractions were rare (4.3%). In most cases, initial lateral cephalometric (80.4%) and panoramic (93.3%) radiographs were presented. However, the final radiograph count dropped, with lateral cephalometric at 69.2%, and panoramic at 82.2% of cases. Conclusion: Cases in the Align®Global Gallery mostly feature Class I patients with crowded teeth, treated with expansion and interproximal reduction. The absence of standardized information and post-treatment data restricts the applicability of these findings to broader Invisalign® treatment trends. RESUMO Introdução: Em Ortodontia e Ortopedia Facial, o momento de início do tratamento pode ser crítico, e uma análise individual deve ser aplicada para promover um planejamento de tratamento favorável. No presente estudo, foram realizadas a avaliação individualizada da sutura palatina mediana (SPM) e medições no palato de adolescentes e adultos jovens tratados com expansão rápida da maxila (ERM). Descrição: Foram avaliados vinte e seis pacientes submetidos à ERM com aparelho dentossuportado (Hyrax). Os critérios de inclusão foram: idade mínima de 14 anos, apresentando todos os dentes posteriores, diagnosticado com discrepância transversa da maxila e com uma indicação clínica para expansão maxilar. A tomografia computadorizada de feixe cônico (TCFC) pré-tratamento desses pacientes foi avaliada para obter os estágios de maturação da SPM (MSPM), densidade da SPM (DSPM), comprimento do palato, espessura (anterior, intermediária e posterior) e área sagital. Resultados: Os estágios de maturação presentes foram C, D ou E; a densidade variou de 0,6 a 1, e foram determinados grupos de baixa (DSPM < 0,75) e alta densidade (DSPM ≥ 0,75). Indivíduos com maior DSPM apresentaram menor área sagital, em comparação com o grupo de densidade mais baixa. Indivíduos nos estágios D e E de MSPM apresentaram menor área sagital e espessura intermediária, comparados aos indivíduos no estágio C. Conclusão: Uma menor área sagital palatina foi observada nos grupos de alta DSPM e nos estágios D e E de MSPM.

ABSTRACT Introduction: In Orthodontics and Facial Orthopedics, the timing of treatment onset may be critical and individual analysis should be applied to promote a favorable treatment planning. In this study, individual analysis of midpalatal suture (MS) and palatal measurements were performed in teenagers and young adult patients treated with rapid maxillary expansion (RME). Description: Twenty-six patients submitted to RME with a tooth-supported appliance (Hyrax) were evaluated. The inclusion criteria were: minimum age of 14 years, presenting all posterior teeth, diagnosed with transverse maxillary discrepancy, and with a clinical indication for maxillary expansion. The pretreatment CBCT scans of these patients were assessed to obtain the stages of MS maturation (MSM); density ratio (MSD); and palatal length, thickness (anterior, intermediate and posterior) and sagittal area. Results: The maturation stages present were C, D or E; the density ranged from 0.6 to 1, and lower density (MSD < 0.75) and higher density (MSD ≥ 0.75) groups were determined. Individuals with higher MSD presented smaller sagittal area, compared to the lower density group. Individuals in D and E MSM stages presented smaller sagittal area and intermediate thickness, compared to stage C. Conclusions: Smaller palatal sagittal area was observed in the high MSD groups and in the stages D and E of MSM.

RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar a cor de diferentes resinas ortodônticas expostas a três enxaguantes bucais, por um intervalo de tempo prolongado (simulação de 10 anos de envelhecimento). Métodos: 160 espécimes foram distribuídos em quatro grupos, de acordo com a resina de colagem ortodôntica (Concise, Transbond XT, Transbond Plus Color Change e Natural Ortho). Cada grupo foi exposto a diferentes tipos de enxaguantes bucais: à base de álcool (Listerine®), isento de álcool (Oral-B®), clorexidina (Periogard®) ou água destilada, como controle. Os espécimes foram submetidos a dois ciclos de manchamento e envelhecimento artificial. A cor foi avaliada por meio de um espectrofotômetro digital no início do experimento e após cada ciclo. O sistema utilizado para avaliar as alterações de cor foi o CIE L*a*b*. Os dados foram analisados utilizando-se o teste ANOVA e o teste post-hoc de Tukey. Resultados: Após a simulação de 10 anos de envelhecimento, as resinas Transbond XT e Natural Ortho não apresentaram diferenças estatisticamente significativas no ∆E, quando expostas a diferentes enxaguantes bucais. Os espécimes do grupo Concise expostos ao enxaguante bucal sem álcool apresentaram diferença significativa quando comparados aos espécimes do mesmo grupo expostos aos outros enxaguantes bucais. Os espécimes do grupo Transbond Plus Color Change expostos à clorexidina e ao enxaguante bucal à base de álcool apresentaram diferença significativa quando comparados aos espécimes dos grupos expostos à água e ao enxaguante bucal sem álcool. Conclusão: Todas as resinas ortodônticas avaliadas apresentaram alterações de cor clinicamente perceptíveis quando expostas a pelo menos um dos enxaguantes bucais, com exceção da resina ortodôntica Natural Ortho. A resina Concise exposta à solução isenta de álcool foi a que apresentou os maiores valores de alteração de cor.

ABSTRACT Objective: To assess the color of different orthodontic resin bonding agents exposed to three antiseptic mouthrinses for a prolonged time interval (10-year aging simulation). Methods: 160 specimens were distributed into four groups, according to the orthodontic resin bond agent (Concise, Transbond XT, Transbond Plus Color Change, and Natural Ortho). Each group was exposed to different antiseptic mouthrinses: alcohol-based (Listerine®), alcohol-free (Oral-B®), chlorhexidine (Periogard®) and distilled water as the control. Specimens were submitted to two cycles of staining and artificial aging. Color was evaluated by means of a digital spectrophotometer at the beginning of the experiment and after every cycle. The system used to assess color changes was the CIE L*a*b*. Data was analyzed using the ANOVA and Tukey post-hoc test. Results: After simulation of 10 years of aging, Transbond XT and Natural Ortho composites presented no statistically significant differences in ∆E when exposed to different mouthrinses. The Concise composite specimens exposed to alcohol-free mouthrinse presented a significant difference when compared with specimens from the same group exposed to other antiseptic mouthrinses. Transbond Plus Color Change specimens exposed to chlorhexidine mouthrinse and to alcohol-containing mouthrinse presented a significant difference when compared with the specimens from the group exposed to water and alcohol-free antiseptic. Conclusion: All orthodontic resin bonding agents tested presented clinically perceptible color changes when exposed to at least one of the mouthrinses, except for the Natural Ortho composite. The Concise composite exposed to the alcohol-free solution was the resin that presented the highest color change values.

RESUMO Objetivo: avaliar o volume e a morfologia da porção média da faringe (PMF) em adolescentes com diferentes padrões esqueléticos no sentido anteroposterior. Método: para esse estudo transversal, foram selecionados cento e vinte e seis pacientes (56 homens e 70 mulheres) que tinham tomografia computadorizada de feixe cônico (TCFC) em seus registros. Os participantes foram classificados de acordo com o valor do ângulo ANB, em Classe I (1o ≥ ANB ≤ 3o), Classe II (ANB > 3o) e Classe III (ANB < 1o). O volume total (Vt), a área axial mínima (AxMin) e a morfologia da PMF e de suas subdivisões - velofaringe (VF) e orofaringe (OF) - foram avaliados na TCFC e em software de reconstrução tridimensional (3D) de imagens. As comparações intergrupos foram realizadas por meio dos testes ANOVA e post-hoc de Tukey. As correlações entre os valores de Vt e Axmin das vias aéreas com os valores do ângulo ANB foram testadas por meio de análise de regressão linear, considerando-se o sexo como uma covariável. Resultados: diferença estatisticamente significativa entre os grupos foi observada apenas no Vt da VF; indivíduos Classe II apresentaram Vt significativamente menor (6.863,75 ± 2.627,20 mm3) do que indivíduos Classe III (9.011,62 ± 3.442,56 mm3) (p< 0,05). Não foram observadas diferenças significativas entre os grupos em nenhuma outra variável avaliada, nem na PMF, nem na OF (p> 0,05). Foi evidenciada uma correlação negativa significativa entre Vt e Axmin e os valores do ângulo ANB; dimorfismo sexual foi observado para algumas variáveis. Conclusões: indivíduos Classe II apresentam o menor Vt da VF. O Vt e a Axmin tenderam a diminuir quando os valores do ângulo ANB aumentaram, em todas as regiões avaliadas.

ABSTRACT Objective: To assess the volume and morphology of the middle region of the pharynx (MRP) in adolescents with different anteroposterior craniofacial skeletal patterns. Methods: One hundred twenty-six patients (56 male and 70 female), who had cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) within their records, were selected for this cross-sectional study. Participants were classified, according to their ANB angle value, in Class I (1o ≤ ANB ≤ 3o), Class II (ANB > 3o) and Class III (ANB < 1o). The total volume (tV), minimum axial area (AxMin) and morphology of the MRP and its subdivisions - velopharynx (VP) and oropharynx (OP) - were characterized by CBCT and 3-dimensional image reconstruction software. Intergroup comparisons were performed by ANOVA and Tukey post-hoc tests. Correlations between tV and Axmin with the ANB angle values were tested using linear regression analysis, considering sex as covariable. Results: Statistically significant difference between groups were observed in tV only for the VP region; Class II individuals presented significantly lower tV (6863.75 ± 2627.20 mm3) than Class III subjects (9011.62 ± 3442.56 mm3) (p< 0.05). No significant differences were observed between groups for any other variable assessed, neither in MRP nor in the OP region (p> 0.05). A significant negative correlation was evidenced between tV and Axmin and the ANB angle values; sexual dimorphism was observed for some variables. Conclusions: Class II subjects have smaller tV in the VP region. tV and Axmin tend to decrease in all evaluated regions when the ANB angle values increase.

Abstract: Orthodontic bonding systems are submitted to demineralization and remineralization dynamics that might compromise their surface smoothness, and favor biofilm aggregation and caries development. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of a cariogenic challenge model (in vitro pH-cycling model) on the surface roughness and topography of 3 bonding materials: Transbond™ XT (XT), Transbond™ Plus Color Change (PLUS) and Fuji Ortho™ LC (FUJI), by means of Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). Six specimens with standardized dimensions and surface smoothness were fabricated per group, and the materials were manipulated in accordance with the manufacturers' instructions. No polishing was necessary. AFM tests were performed before and after pH-cycling, taking 3 readouts per specimen. The roughness results (Ra) were obtained at nanometric levels (nm) and surface records were acquired in two- and three-dimensional images of height and lock-in phase of the material components. The surfaces of all groups analyzed in the study were morphologically altered, presenting images suggestive of matrix degradation and loss of matrix-load integrity. FUJI presented the greatest increase in surface roughness, followed by XT and PLUS, respectively (p≤0.001). Nevertheless, the roughness values found did not present sufficient degradation to harbor bacteria. The surface roughness of all tested materials was increased by pH-cycling. The use of materials capable of resisting degradation in the oral environment is recommended, in order to conserve their integrity and of the surrounding tissues.

Abstract Botulinum toxin type A is effective in reducing excessive gingival display caused by hyperfunctional upper lip elevator muscles; however, this effect is transient. This study aimed to determine the duration of the effectiveness of botulinum toxin type A on a gummy smile. A systematic search was conducted using Medline (PubMed), Scopus, and Web of Science electronic databases, from 1970 to March 2017 with no language restriction; the search included studies evaluating adult patients with excessive gingival display who were treated with botulinum toxin and were followed-up for at least 3 months. OpenGrey and Clinical Trial Registry were also consulted. Quality assessment was applied to determine the level of evidence and bias, and a meta-analysis was performed. Of 2181 full texts, 71 were obtained, with 3 prospective studies meeting the selection criteria. The gingival display was significantly reduced to baseline with 2, 4, and 8 weeks of treatment. The gingival display considerably reduced at the baseline-2-week comparison (–4.44 mm using raw data and–4.05 mm using the standard difference) and increased throughout the weeks of follow-up. There is scant evidence to determine the duration of the effectiveness of toxin type A on a gummy smile. The effect tends to be stable until at least 8 weeks of follow-up, and the gingival exposure may not return to baseline within 12 weeks of follow-up. Well-designed randomized clinical trials with a minimum of 6 months of follow-up are necessary to strengthen the evidence.

RESUMO OBJETIVO: o objetivo da presente revisão sistemática foi avaliar a duração do período de contenção e a estabilidade do tratamento ortodôntico com expansão maxilar em pacientes em crescimento com mordida cruzada posterior. MÉTODOS: foram realizadas buscas estratégicas nas bases eletrônicas: Cochrane Library, Web of Science, PubMed e Scopus, até 15 de janeiro de 2016. Os critérios de inclusão foram: estudos clínicos controlados e randomizados, prospectivos ou retrospectivos, de pacientes em crescimento com mordida cruzada; tratados com aparelhos expansores maxilares, com fase de contenção pós-expansão e no mínimo seis meses de fase de pós-contenção. Os critérios de exclusão foram: mordida cruzada anterior, anomalias craniofaciais, cirurgia ou outro tratamento ortodôntico; relato de casos; artigos de opinião; teses; revisões de literatura e revisões sistemáticas. O risco de viés dos artigos selecionados foi avaliado a partir do Cochrane risk of bias tool para ensaios clínicos randomizados e Downs and Black checklist para ensaios clínicos não randomizados. RESULTADOS: a busca resultou em 156 títulos/resumos, sendo 44 textos examinados na íntegra. Foram selecionados 6 artigos para o acesso à qualidade metodológica. A duração do período de contenção ocorreu entre 4 semanas e 6 meses. Aparelhos fixos (aparelho em acrílico, Haas, Hyrax e quad-helix) ou removíveis (Hawley e Hawley com expansor) foram utilizados na fase de contenção. CONCLUSÃO: parece que seis meses de contenção com aparelhos fixos ou removíveis são suficientes para evitar a recidiva ou garantir mudanças mínimas em um curto período de acompanhamento pós-contenção.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE: The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the duration of the retention period in growing patients undergoing maxillary expansion and its relation with posterior crossbite stability. METHODS: Search strategies were executed for electronic databases Cochrane Library, Web of Science, PubMed and Scopus, which were completed on January 15, 2016. The inclusion criteria included randomized, prospective or retrospective controlled trials in growing subjects with posterior crossbite; treated with maxillary expanders; retention phase after expansion; post-retention phase of at least 6 months. The exclusion criteria were anterior crossbite, craniofacial anomalies, surgery or another orthodontic intervention; case reports; author’s opinions articles, thesis, literature reviews and systematic reviews. The risk of bias of selected articles was assessed with Cochrane risk of bias tool for RCTs and Downs and Black checklist for non-RCTs. RESULTS: A total of 156 titles/abstracts was retrieved, 44 full-texts were examined, and 6 articles were selected and assessed for their methodological quality. The retention period after maxillary expansion ranged between 4 weeks and 16 months. Fixed (acrylic plate, Haas, Hyrax and quad-helix) or removable (Hawley and Hawley expander) appliances were used for retention. CONCLUSIONS: Six months of retention with either fixed or removable appliances seem to be enough to avoid relapse or to guarantee minimal changes in a short-term follow-up.

Abstract The objective of this study was to compare coating dimensions and surface characteristics of two different esthetic covered nickel-titanium orthodontic rectangular archwires, as-received from the manufacturer and after oral exposure. The study was designed for comparative purposes. Both archwires, as-received from the manufacturer, were observed using a stereomicroscope to measure coating thickness and inner metallic dimensions. The wires were also exposed to oral environment in 11 orthodontic active patients for 21 days. After removing the samples, stereomicroscopy images were captured, coating loss was measured and its percentage was calculated. Three segments of each wire (one as-received and two after oral exposure) were observed using scanning electron microscopy for a qualitative analysis of the labial surface of the wires. The Lilliefors test and independent t-test were applied to verify normality of data and statistical differences between wires, respectively. The significance level adopted was 0.05. The results showed that the differences between the wires while comparing inner height and thickness were statistically significant (p < 0.0001). In average, the most recently launched wire presented a coating thickness twice that of the control wire, which was also a statistically significant difference. The coating loss percentage was also statistically different (p = 0.0346) when the latest launched wire (13.27%) was compared to the control (29.63%). In conclusion, the coating of the most recent wire was thicker and more uniform, whereas the control had a thinner coating on the edges. After oral exposure, both tested wires presented coating loss, but the most recently launched wire exhibited better results.

RESUMO Objetivo: o objetivo deste estudo preliminar foi avaliar as alterações no comprimento dentário e na espessura alveolar durante a retração dos incisivos superiores. Métodos: um total de 11 pacientes apresentando protrusão dentoalveolar severa, de acordo com a tomografia computadorizada de feixe cônico (TCFC) inicial (T1), e que continham no seu plano de tratamento extração dos pré-molares superiores e retração dos incisivos superiores, foram selecionados e submetidos a exames de TCFC um mês após o término da retração dos incisivos (T2). Com o auxílio do software Dolphin Imaging(r), a prémaxila foi dividida em sete cortes axiais. Em cada corte axial, foram realizadas cinco medições da distância da cortical vestibular a lingual. O comprimento dos incisivos superiores (n = 44) foi medido no corte sagital. As medições foram refeitas após o intervalo de duas semanas e o coeficiente de correlação intraclasse (ICC) foi utilizado para avaliar a calibração do examinador. Utilizou-se o teste de Wilcoxon para detectar diferenças nas medições realizadas nos dois intervalos de tempo. Resultados: o ICC mostrou-se satisfatório tanto para o comprimento dentário (0,890) quanto para a espessura alveolar da pré-maxila (0,980). Não foram observadas diferenças estatísticas significativas para comprimento dentário e para as espessuras alveolares (p < 0,05) nos períodos avaliados. Conclusões: as forças atuantes na retração dos incisivos, nessa pesquisa, não provocaram alterações significativas no comprimento dentário dos incisivos superiores, nem mudanças na espessura alveolar da pré-maxila.

ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of this preliminary study was to assess changes in tooth length and alveolar thickness following retraction of maxillary incisors. Methods: A total of 11 patients presenting severe maxillary dentoalveolar protrusion revealed by initial (T1) cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), and whose treatment plan included extraction of maxillary first premolars and retraction of maxillary incisors, were selected and submitted to CBCT examination one month after the end of incisors retraction (T2). The premaxilla was assessed through seven axial slices by means of Dolphin ImagingTM software. In each of these slices, five measurements of the distance from the buccal cortical bone to the palatal cortical bone were performed. Tooth length of maxillary incisors (n = 44) was also measured in sagittal slices. Measurements were repeated after a two-week interval, and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to test examiner calibration. Wilcoxon test was used to detect differences in measurements performed at the two time intervals. Results: The ICC was satisfactory for tooth length (0.890) and for premaxilla alveolar thickness measurements (0.980). Analysis of data showed no statistically significant differences (p > 0.05) in tooth length or alveolar thickness between the two-time intervals assessed. Conclusion: The force used in retraction of maxillary incisors in this research did not promote significant changes in tooth length of maxillary incisors or in premaxilla alveolar thickness.

Objetivo: comparar, in vivo, mini-implantes (MI) com superfície lisa (usinada) e porosa (tratada com ácido), avaliando sua estabilidade primária e secundária.Métodos:trinta e seis MI foram inseridos na mandíbula de seis cães, e cada animal recebeu seis MI. Na hemiarcada direita, foram inseridos três MI sem tratamento da superfície (liso); na esquerda, outros três com a superfície tratada com ácido (poroso). Os dois MI distais de cada hemiarcada receberam carga imediata de 1,0N durante dezesseis semanas, e o MI da extremidade mesial não recebeu carregamento. A estabilidade foi medida pelos torques de inserção e de remoção, pela mobilidade inicial e final, e pela distância inter-MI.Resultados:não houve diferença estatística do comportamento entre os MI lisos e porosos. No entanto, observou-se torque de inserção elevado e mobilidade inicial reduzida em todos os grupos. Para todos os grupos, houve redução dos torques de remoção, em relação ao de inserção. Os MI porosos apresentaram maior torque de remoção e menor mobilidade final, em relação aos MI lisos. Os MI não permaneceram estáticos, sendo o deslocamento dos MI porosos menor em relação aos MI lisos, mas sem diferença estatística.Conclusões:a estabilidade primária dos MI foi maior do que a estabilidade medida na sua remoção; não houve diferença na estabilidade entre os MI lisos e porosos ao avaliar-se a mobilidade, o deslocamento e os torques de inserção e remoção.

Objective: To compare in vivo orthodontic mini-implants (MI) of smooth (machined) and rough (acid etched) surfaces, assessing primary and secondary stability.Methods:Thirty-six (36) MI were inserted in the mandibles of six (6) dogs. Each animal received six (6) MI. In the right hemiarch, three (3) MI without surface treatment (smooth) were inserted, whereas in the left hemiarch, another three (3) MI with acid etched surfaces (rough) were inserted. The two distal MI in each hemiarch received an immediate load of 1.0 N for 16 weeks, whereas the MI in the mesial extremity was not subject to loading. Stability was measured by insertion and removal torque, initial and final mobility and by inter mini-implant distance.Results:There was no statistical behavioral difference between smooth and rough MI. High insertion torque and reduced initial mobility were observed in all groups, as well as a reduction in removal torques in comparison with insertion torque. Rough MI presented higher removal torque and lower final mobility in comparison to smooth MI. MI did not remain static, with displacement of rough MI being smaller in comparison with smooth MI, but with no statistical difference.Conclusions:MI primary stability was greater than stability measured at removal. There was no difference in stability between smooth and rough MI when assessing mobility, displacement and insertion as well as removal torques.

OBJETIVO: o objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar a influência regional na percepção da estética do perfil facial nos estados do Rio de Janeiro (RJ) e Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brasil. MÉTODOS: dois modelos leucodermas, um homem e uma mulher, com perfis faciais harmoniosos, tiveram suas fotografias de perfil editadas de modo a produzir sete perfis diferentes. As imagens foram avaliadas por estudantes do primeiro ano do curso de Odontologia (leigos), que as classificaram quanto à sua preferência estética. RESULTADOS: o resultado do teste t para amostras independentes demonstrou haver diferença entre as regiões, quanto à preferência estética de determinados perfis faciais. A fotografia feminina nomeada com a letra 'G' (retrusão da mandíbula) recebeu os maiores escores em RS (p = 0,006). Para as fotografias masculinas, não houve diferença (p > 0,007). O sexo dos avaliadores não exerceu influência na percepção da estética do perfil (p > 0,007). Considerando todos os avaliadores em conjunto, o teste ANOVA/Tukey mostrou haver diferença entre os perfis avaliados (p ≤ 0,05) tanto para as fotografias femininas quanto para as masculinas. A fotografia feminina preferida foi a com a letra 'F' (biretrusão dentoalveolar/perfil reto). A fotografia masculina preferida foi a 'E' (biprotrusão dentoalveolar/perfil reto). CONCLUSÃO: foi observada diferença regional quanto à preferência estética do perfil. No estado do Rio de Janeiro, houve preferência por lábios mais proeminentes; enquanto no estado do Rio Grande do Sul, os perfis considerados mais atrativos foram os retos. Os perfis considerados menos atrativos foram os que correspondem à Classe III.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the regional influence on the perception of facial profile esthetics in Rio de Janeiro state (RJ) and Rio Grande do Sul state (RS), Brazil. METHODS: Two Caucasian models, a man and a woman, with balanced facial profiles, had their photographs digitally manipulated so as to produce seven different profiles. First year dental students (laypeople) assessed the images and classified them according to their esthetic preference. RESULTS: The result of the t test for independent samples showed differences among states for certain facial profiles. The female photograph identified with the letter 'G' (mandibular retrusion) received higher scores in RS state (p = 0.006). No differences were found for male photographs (p > 0.007). The evaluators' sex seemed not to influence their esthetic perception (p > 0.007). Considering all evaluators together, ANOVA/Tukey's test showed differences among the profiles (p ≤ 0.05) for both male and female photographs. The female photograph that received the highest score was the one identified with the letter 'F' (dentoalveolar bimaxillary retrusion/ straight profile). For the male profiles, photograph identified with the letter 'E' (dentoalveolar bimaxillary protrusion/ straight profile) received the best score. CONCLUSION: Regional differences were observed regarding preferences of facial profile esthetics. In Rio de Janeiro state, more prominent lips were preferred while in Rio Grande do Sul state, profiles with straight lips were favored. Class III profiles were considered less attractive.

OBJETIVO: o objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a influência da sobreposição estrutural e da magnificação nas radiografias cefalométricas laterais (RCL) geradas por meio de tomografias computadorizadas de feixe cônico (TCFC), usando diferentes segmentos do crânio. MÉTODOS: foram selecionadas 10 tomografias de pacientes. Quatro RCL foram geradas usando Dolphin Imaging, sendo face total, lado direito, lado esquerdo e o centro da cabeça. Um total de 40 imagens foi importado para o Radiocef Studio, e os ângulos das análises cefalométricas mais comuns foram medidos pelo mesmo observador, duas vezes, em um intervalo de 10 dias. As análises estatísticas incluíram concordância intraexaminador e comparação entre os métodos por meio do coeficiente de correlação intraclasse (ICC) e testes de concordância de Bland-Altman. RESULTADOS: a concordância intraexaminador dos ângulos avaliados pelo ICC foi excelente (> 0,90) para 83% das medições, boa (entre 0,75 e 0,90) para 15%, e moderada (entre 0,50 e 0,75) para 2% das medições. A comparação entre os métodos por ICC foi excelente para 68% das medições, boa para 26% e moderada para 6%. As variáveis que apresentaram intervalos de confiança mais amplos (> 6°) nos testes de Bland-Altman, na avaliação intraexaminador, foram: incisivo superior, incisivo inferior e plano oclusal, enquanto nos métodos de comparação, as variáveis com intervalos de confiança mais amplos foram: incisivo inferior, incisivo superior, GoGn, ângulo do plano oclusal, plano horizontal de Frankfort e CoA. CONCLUSÃO: a sobreposição estrutural pareceu influenciar os resultados mais do que a magnificação, mas os métodos não influenciaram significativamente as medições. Considerável variabilidade individual pode ocorrer especialmente para os incisivos superiores e inferiores, plano horizontal de Frankfort e plano oclusal.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of magnification and superimposition of structures on CBCT-generated lateral cephalometric radiographs (LCR) using different segments of the cranium. METHODS: CBCT scans of 10 patients were selected. Four LCR were generated using Dolphin Imaging(r) software: full-face, right side, left side and center of the head. A total of 40 images were imported into Radiocef Studio 2(r), and the angles of the most common cephalometric analyses were traced by the same observer twice and within a 10-day interval. Statistical analyses included intraexaminer agreement and comparison between methods by means of intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Bland-Altman agreement tests. RESULTS: Intraexaminer agreement of the angles assessed by ICC was excellent (> 0.90) for 83% of measurements, good (between 0.75 and 0.90) for 15%, and moderate (between 0.50 and 0.75) for 2% of measurements. The comparison between methods by ICC was excellent for 68% of measurements, good for 26%, and moderate for 6%. Variables presenting wider confidence intervals (> 6o) in the Bland-Altman tests, in intraexaminer assessment, were: mandibular incisor angle, maxillary incisor angle, and occlusal plane angle. And in comparison methods the variables with wider confidence interval were: mandibular incisor, maxillary incisor, GoGn, occlusal plane angle, Frankfort horizontal plane (FHP), and CoA. CONCLUSION: Superimposition of structures seemed to influence the results more than magnification, and neither one of them significantly influenced the measurements. Considerable individual variability may occur, especially for mandibular and maxillary incisors, FHP and occlusal plane.

OBJETIVO: determinar, por meio de uma revisão sistemática, o melhor tratamento entre desgastes interproximais e extração de incisivos para a correção de apinhamento anteroinferior em pacientes Classe I com dentição permanente. MÉTODOS: foram feitas buscas nas bases de dados eletrônicas MEDLINE, Scopus e Web of Science por artigos publicados de janeiro de 1950 até outubro de 2013. Os critérios de inclusão foram estudos que abordassem tratamentos com desgastes interproximais e/ou extração de incisivos inferiores, de casos Classe I com apinhamento anteroinferior na dentição permanente. RESULTADOS: dos 943 artigos encontrados após a remoção dos duplicados, 925 foram excluídos após a leitura dos resumos. Após leitura dos artigos completos, 13 foram excluídos pelos critérios de eligibilidade e um pela qualidade metodológica, restando quatro artigos, sendo dois retrospectivos e dois prospectivos randomizados. Os dados foram coletados, analisados e organizados em tabelas. CONCLUSÕES: tanto o desgaste interproximal quanto a extração de incisivo inferior são tratamentos eficazes em Classe I na dentição permanente, com apinhamento anteroinferior moderado e perfil facial agradável. Há fracas evidências para determinar a escolha do melhor tratamento para cada caso. A decisão clínica deve ser tomada em bases individuais, considerando as características anatômicas dentárias, da severidade do apinhamento, condições de saúde dentária e bucal, expectativas dos pacientes e ensaio em modelos (set-up).

OBJECTIVE: To determine by means of a systematic review the best treatment, whether interproximal wear or incisor extraction, to correct anterior lower crowding in Class I patients in permanent dentition. METHODS: A literature review was conducted using MEDLINE, Scopus and Web of Science to retrieve studies published between January 1950 and October 2013. In selecting the sample, the following inclusion criteria were applied: studies involving interproximal wear and/or extraction of mandibular incisors, as well as Class I cases with anterior lower crowding in permanent dentition. RESULTS: Out of a total of 943 articles found after excluding duplicates, 925 were excluded after abstract analysis. After full articles were read, 13 were excluded by the eligibility criteria and one due to methodological quality; therefore, only fours articles remained: two retrospective and two randomized prospective studies. Data were collected, analyzed and organized in tables. CONCLUSION: Both interproximal wear and mandibular incisor extraction are effective in treating Class I malocclusion in permanent dentition with moderate anterior lower crowding and pleasant facial profile. There is scant evidence to determine the best treatment option for each case. Clinical decision should be made on an individual basis by taking into account dental characteristics, crowding, dental and oral health, patient's expectations and the use of set-up models.
