ABSTRACT Plant production in nurseries, both in the forestry and horticultural sectors, has a large demand for substrates, making the use of natural resources such as peat high. The composition of substrates must not only have the necessary characteristics for good plant development, such as porosity, density, and water retention, but also look for sustainable and economical production. Biochar is a material derived from the processing of various organic residues which, due to its physical and chemical characteristics, presents great potential as a component of substrates for seedlings in nurseries. However, some issues still need to be resolved for this application, such as implementation costs, production process variables, feedstock origin and characterization, as well as the ideal proportions to be employed in formulations. To advance in these issues, we reviewed studies dealing with the different aspects of the use of biochar as a component of substrates. RESUMO O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar as condições nutricionais e de umidade de um solo cultivado com Eucalyptus benthamii no qual se incorporou biocarvão oriundo da pirólise rápida de uma mistura de madeiras de espécies nativas de Floresta Ombrófila Mista no preparo pré-plantio. O estudo foi desenvolvido em área experimental do Campus da Universidade Estadual do Centro-Oeste, localizada em Irati, Paraná. Foram utilizadas quatro doses de biocarvão, 0, 10, 20 e 40 Mg ha-1, com e sem adubação mineral de 340 Kg ha-1 de NPK com 14 Kg de N, 48 Kg de P2O5, 28 Kg de K2O no formulado 4-14-8, em delineamento em blocos ao acaso com quatro repetições. As mudas de Eucalyptus benthamii foram plantadas em espaçamento 3 por 2 metros e após 60 e 180 dias foram avaliados os seguintes atributos do solo: pH, carbono orgânico, teores de P, K, Ca, Mg, Al e a umidade do solo. A aplicação de 40 Mg ha-1 de biocarvão com e sem adubação de base ocasionou aumento do pH e nutrientes devido ao teor de cinzas na constituição do condicionador, e aumento da umidade do solo. A aplicação de biocarvão pode se tornar uma prática positiva com o objetivo de disponibilizar nutrientes para o desenvolvimento inicial da cultura. Entretanto, deve-se a avaliar o efeito da fertilidade, de acordo com as doses aplicadas, uma vez que a disponibilidade de nutrientes diminuiu ao longo do tempo acarretando a necessidade de adubações de cobertura, porém em quantidades menores.

ABSTRACT The objective of this research was to evaluate the nutritional and moisture conditions of a soil cultivated with Eucalyptus benthamii, in which it was used biochar coming from the fast pyrolysis of a mixture of native species of Mixed Ombrophilous Forest in the preparation of the pre-planting. The study was developed in an experimental area of the State University of the Center-West located in Irati, Paraná state. Four doses of biochar, 0, 10, 20 and 40 Mg ha-1, with and without mineral fertilization of 340 Kg ha-1 of NPK with 14 Kg N, 48 Kg P2O5, 28 Kg K2O in formulation 4-14-8, in a randomized complete block design with four replicates. Eucalyptus benthamii seedlings were planted in spacing 3 x 2 meters and, after 60 and 180 days, the following soil attributes were evaluated: pH, organic carbon, P, K, Ca, Mg, Al contents and soil moisture. The application of 40 Mg ha-1 biochar with and without basic fertilization, caused an increase of pH and nutrients due to the ash content in the constitution of the conditioner, and an increase of the soil moisture. The application of biochar may become a positive practice in order to provide nutrients for the initial development of the crop. However, it is necessary to evaluate the effect of fertility according to the dose applied, since the availability of nutrients may decrease over time, leading to the need for cover fertilization, however in smaller amounts.

RESUMO. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi o de avaliar a diversidade genética entre plantas nativas e indivíduos de genealogia desconhecida de C. walkeriana, bem como C. loddigesii e C. nobilior, e também avançar na solução do dilema da origem do clone “Orchidglade” de C. walkeriana. Oito locos microssatélites foram utilizados para avaliar a diversidade genética entre indivíduos de C. walkeriana. Os marcadores microssatélites não foram eficientes na determinação da diversidade genética entre os grupos C. walkeriana (nativas e melhoradas). A dificuldade em determinar a distância genética entre os genótipos diferentes pode ser devida a um sistema complexo de reprodução das espécies e devido a uma fraca barreira reprodutiva facilitando o desenvolvimento de híbridos. Nossa análise revelou menores distâncias genéticas entre os clones Orchidglade, “Equilab”, “Kenny” e “Pedentive” e as espécies C. loddigesii e C. nobilior. As C. walkeriana nativas se mostraram geneticamente mais distantes das espécies de C. loddigesii e C. nobilior.

ABSTRACT. The aim of this study was to evaluate the genetic diversity among native plants and some individuals obtained from crosses with unknown genealogy of C. walkeriana as well as C. loddigesii and C. nobilior and to advance towards solving the question of the genetic purity of the “Orchidglade” clone. Eight microsatellite loci were used to evaluate the genetic diversity between individuals of C. walkeriana. Microsatellites were not efficient in determining the genetic diversity between C. walkeriana groups (native and improved). The difficulty in determining the genetic distance between the different genotypes can be attributed to the complex mating system of the species and to a weak genetic barrier that facilitates the development of hybrids. Our analysis revealed smaller genetic distances between the “Orchidglade”, “Equilab”, “Kenny” and “Pedentive” clones and the species C. loddigesii and C. nobilior. Native C. walkeriana plants were genetically more distant from the C. loddigesii and C. nobilior species.

Este trabalhou avaliou o efeito da umidade na compactação do solo submetido ao tráfego de máquinas de colheita de madeira em povoamentos de Pinus taeda L.. O estudo foi realizado nas áreas operacionais de uma empresa florestal localizada em Santa Catarina. Os dados foram obtidos em um Cambissolo Húmico em diferentes períodos, visando contemplar variações de umidade do solo. Foram comparadas a situação sem tráfego (ST) e aquela após o tráfego das máquinas (AT), por meio da determinação da densidade do solo (Ds) e da porosidade total (Pt), nas profundidades de 0 a 15, 15 a 30 e 30 a 50 cm, e da resistência do solo à penetração (RP) no intervalo de profundidade entre 0 e 80 cm. Os resultados mostraram que as maiores alterações provocadas pelo tráfego das máquinas nas propriedades físicas avaliadas ocorreram com o aumento da umidade. Foram também detectadas alterações em todo o perfil de solo. Isso demonstrou que a colheita da madeira realizada em solo úmido causa maior compactação. Dentre os modelos comparados para a estimativa da resistência do solo à penetração, o que teve o melhor ajuste foi o Modelo por Stepwise Aritmético com Variáveis Mistas (MSAM), que estimou a RP pela Ds inversa e a Ug de forma pura, explicando 71% da variação dessa propriedade, e deixando em evidência a possível influência de outros fatores na estimativa da compactação do solo.

This study evaluated the moisture effect in soil compaction submitted to wood harvesting machine traffic in Pinus taeda L. stands. The study was conducted in the operational areas of a forestry company located in Santa Catarina. The data were obtained in a Humic Cambisol soil in different periods in order to contemplate variations in soil moisture. It was compared the situation without traffic (WT) and after machine traffic (AT) by determining the bulk density (Ds) and soil total porosity (Pt) at the depths of 0 to 15, 15 to 30 and 30 to 50 cm, and soil penetration resistance (PR) in the depths between 0 to 80 cm. The results showed that the major changes caused by traffic of machines in the physical properties occurred with increasing of moisture content. It was also detected changes in the entire soil profile. This demonstrated that the wood harvesting when performed in soils with high moisture contents will cause greater compaction. Among the models compared to estimate the soil penetration resistance, Stepwise Arithmetic Model with Mixed variables (MSAM), which estimated the RP by inverse Ds and Ug in pure form was the one with the best adjustement, explaining 71% of the variation of this property, and evidencing the possible influence of other factors in the estimation of soil compaction.
