The use of materials such as organofunctionalized silica for application in solid phase extraction (SPE) allows the preconcentration of several ions, including Pt, and subsequent detection. This work aims to synthesize and characterize an organofunctionalized silica (Sil-TMSDT) with the silylant N’(trimethoxysilyl)propylethylenetriamine and its application as a solid phase in the preconcentration Pt4+ ions in aqueous media, using detection by flame atomization atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS). The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) confirmed the aminofunctionalization of the silica. For the adsorption process, a preconcentration mini-column with 200 mg of Sil-TMSDT, a solution of 0.485 mg L−1 of K2[PtCl6] at pH 10 and HNO3 0.5 mol L−1 as eluent were used, obtaining an enrichment factor of 15-fold with retention efficiency higher than 99%. The Pt4+ ion determined by FAAS showed a linear response between 0.02 and 0.40 mg L−1; a linear coefficient where R = 0.9981; a 16-fold preconcentration factor; a limit of quantification (LOQ) and limit of detection (LOD) of 0.045 and 0.014 mg L−1, respectively. The proposal system showed analytical applicability to determining Pt4+ ion in an aqueous medium and could be used to detect traces of this potentially toxic metal in biological fluids such as urine and blood. ABSTRACT The proper disposal of fruit and vegetable waste is essential to promote environmental sustainability, reduce the carbon footprint, improve soil quality, and contribute to the transition to a circular economy. This study examined the impact of incorporating dairy cattle wastewater (DCWW) into anaerobic co-digestion with fruit and vegetable residues and utilization of the resulting biofertilizer as a diluent in the anaerobic mono-digestion of fruit and vegetable residues (recycle). The specific biogas and methane production and the agronomic quality of the biofertilizer were evaluated in a semi-continuous trial. Two startup strategies were employed: initially, the reactors were entirely fed with inoculum (biofertilizer derived from DCWW), and fruit and vegetable residue feedstock was gradually introduced. Anaerobic co-digestion of fruit and vegetable residues with DCWW yielded the highest specific production of biogas and methane at 720 and 436 L kg-1 of volatile solids (VS), respectively. The addition of DCWW increases fruit and vegetable residue alkalinity by 249% and reduces the volatile acidity by 83.4%. Anaerobic mono-digestion of fruit and vegetable residues enhances macronutrient recovery in the biofertilizer through recycle. Logistically, directing fruit and vegetable residues to rural areas for anaerobic co-digestion with DCWW promotes agricultural biofertilizer use. sustainability footprint economy (DCWW codigestion co digestion monodigestion mono recycle .
Abstract A checklist of recent and fossil fishes of the Order Characiformes is presented herein and believed to be complete through 2022. A total of 47 collaborators checked and provided information about their taxa of expertise. The list is arranged in alphabetical order by family and then genus and includes all available synonyms. From a total of 3,087 species group names and 527 genus group names, 2,334 species are currently treated as valid, and assigned to 301 genera and 24 families. This total includes 25 species known only from the fossil record, of which 21 are assigned to eight extant families and four are Incertae sedis in Characiformes, but does not include five species based on fossil which were wrongly treated in Characiformes. The status of 79 nominal species remains unresolved. When there are two competing hypotheses about the validity of a name, one of them is chosen and the alternate interpretation is provided in the remark section of that name. Distributional summaries are presented as numbers that correspond to areas for which there is a record of occurrence of the species. A list of unavailable names is provided at the end since some of those names may need additional research to certify their status. 2022 4 expertise synonyms 3087 3 087 3,08 52 2334 2 334 2,33 valid 30 7 unresolved name 202 308 08 3,0 5 233 33 2,3 20 0 3, 23 2,

ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others. publications problem uptodate up date classifications context exception (CTFB http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/, httpfaunajbrjgovbr http //fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ , jbrj gov br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/) 2015 Brazil 80 specialists 1 2024 133691 133 691 133,69 125138 125 138 125,13 82.3%, 823 82 3 (82.3% 102000 102 000 102,00 7.69%, 769 7 69 (7.69% 11000 11 11,00 . 3,567 3567 567 (3,56 2,292 2292 2 292 (2,29 1,833 1833 833 (1,83 1,447 1447 447 (1,44 1000 1,00 831 (83 628 (62 606 (60 520 (52 50 users science health biology law anthropology education others http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ faunajbrjgovbr //fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ 201 8 202 13369 13 133,6 12513 12 125,1 82.3% (82.3 10200 10 00 102,0 7.69% 76 6 (7.69 1100 11,0 3,56 356 56 (3,5 2,29 229 29 (2,2 1,83 183 83 (1,8 1,44 144 44 (1,4 100 1,0 (8 62 (6 60 52 (5 5 http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br 20 1336 133, 1251 125, 82.3 (82. 1020 0 102, 7.69 (7.6 110 11, 3,5 35 (3, 2,2 22 (2, 1,8 18 (1, 1,4 14 4 ( 82. Abstract Health professionals working to mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic are one of the main risk groups for the disease, being prioritized for vaccination. Considering this, the aim of this study was to analyze the immune response of these professionals immunized with CoronaVac in the first and second doses. Blood samples were collected after the first and second doses of the vaccine (CoronaVac) and used to investigate hematological and biochemical parameters, analysis of immunoglobulin production, cytokines, and gene expression profile, as well as the identification of subsets of immune cells. Post-first dose immunological phenotypic memory (CD27+) profiles (T CD4+, TCD8+ and CD19+) showed a significant increase, as did Monocyte APCs (CD80+HLA-DR+) in relation to the second dose. The cytokines IL-2, IL-6 and IFN-° showed increased values in relation to the other analyzed cytokines. The Th2/Th17 profile in the second dose was characterized by gene expression analysis. The production of IgM and IgG after vaccination showed statistically significant values in the comparison between doses. CoronaVac showed activation of APCs monocytes, memory response of T and B lymphocytes, with immunoglobulins production. This set of responses is characterized by the Th2/Th17 immunological profile.

SUMMARY Acromegaly caused by ectopic growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH)-secreting tumor is exceedingly rare. We report a case of acromegaly secondary to GHRH secretion by an incidentally diagnosed pulmonary neuroendocrine tumor (NET) and review 47 similar cases in literature. A 22-year-old male patient presented with symptoms of pituitary apoplexy. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed apoplexy of a pituitary adenoma. Routinely prior to surgery, a chest radiography was performed which revealed a mass in the left lung. During investigation, the patient was diagnosed with metastatic GHRH-secreting pulmonary NET. In retrospect, it was noted that the patient had pituitary hyperplasia 20 months prior to the MRI which showed the presence of a pituitary adenoma. The histological findings confirmed somatotroph hyperplasia adjacent to somatotropinoma. This case suggests that GHRH secretion can be associated with pituitary hyperplasia, which may be followed by pituitary adenoma formation.

The synthesis, characterization, cytotoxicity and antitumor activity of platinum(II) complexes coordinated to O-glycoside and analogous is reported. Through the acute toxicity tests, it was possible to fit the complexes into categories according to the OECD protocol. The cis-[PtCl2(C6H14S2O2)-κ2S] complex was classified in category 3 and the cis-[PtCl2(C26H38O12S2)-κ2S] complex was classified in category 4. This result demonstrates the lower toxicity achieved by the glycoside in comparison with its analogous system. Evaluations of tumor masses extracted from mice inoculated with Ehrlich carcinoma demonstrated percent inhibition similar to cisplatin and synthesized platinum complexes. Cisplatin showed 59% inhibition, while cis-[PtCl2(C6H14S2O2)-κ2S] and cis-[PtCl2(C26H38O12S2)-κ2S] complexes presented 57% and 59%, respectively. Although the glycosidic compounds exhibit tumor activity, reported in the literature, the presence of platinum ion was shown to be determinant for antitumor action according with the compounds tested, since the glycosidic ligand presented tumor inhibition of only 38%, with a similar antitumor activity in relation to cisplatin.

The use of bioprocess to convert low valued biomass or agroindustrial byproducts into high-value chemicals is an emerging area. However, laboratories usually use outdated analytical techniques to identify bioproducts, losing valuable information, such as the identification of unexpected compounds. In this work, we presented a successful systematic and modern analytical approach based on direct infusion mass spectrometry (DIMS) for an automated high-throughput screening of untargeted compounds from glycerin bioconversion process. We describe advantages of DIMS and its combined application with chemometrics towards an untargeted metabolomics approach to analyze several samples in a short time (11 samples per h). Three batches with 34 samples from the bioconversion of glycerin using several filamentous fungi strains were analyzed. Batch 347 was selected as promising, since high value chemicals, such as amide, phenolic and acid compounds, were identified. The platform presented was fast, robust, and versatile, then it could be applied to different bioprocesses.

Abstract In this study, we developed and validated a chromatographic method by High-performance Liquid Chromatography coupled to Diode-Array Ultraviolet Detector for quantification of acetaminophen in small volumes of plasma. This analytical method is particularly suitable for studies of gastric emptying time and pharmacokinetics in small rodents. Orally administered acetaminophen is promptly and completely absorbed in the intestines, with negligible absorption from the stomach. Owing to these kinetic features, acetaminophen can be used to study gastric emptying. The newly-validated analytical method was employed to investigate whether plants used as anti-dyspeptics in the Brazilian traditional medicine affect the gastric emptying. Lyophilized aqueous extracts from leaves of Baccharis trimera (Less) DC., Asteraceae (carqueja), Maytenus ilicifolia Mart. Ex Reissek, Celastraceae (espinheira-santa) and Lippia alba (Mill.) N.E.Br. ex Britton & P. Wilson, Verbenaceae (erva-cidreira) were administered by gavage to female Wistar rats 30 min before a single oral dose of acetaminophen (50 mg/kg). L. alba extract (50 mg/kg) did not alter acetaminophen plasma concentration versus time curve an indication that it has no effect on gastric emptying. Extracts of B. trimera (50 mg/kg) and M. ilicifolia (30 and 50 mg/kg, but not 10 mg/kg), however, slightly delayed gastric emptying. M. ilicifolia given by intraperitoneal route (30 mg/kg) also retarded gastric emptying. In conclusion, the newly-validated analytical method is adequate for studying the effects of medicinal plants on gastric emptying.

Abstract Introduction Vanilla (Vanilla planifolia Jacks ex Andrews), is an orchid, whose fruit has outstanding organoleptic characteristics, being the second most expensive spice after saffron and used as flavoring. Due to changes in the climate pattern in the Totonacapan producing region, in Veracruz, Mexico, the productivity of vanilla has decreased, but in other regions such as the Huasteca Potosina, commercial production represents an option for local producers. Therefore, in this study the quality of the vanilla from 14 sites of eleven localities, belonging to eight municipalities of the Huasteca Potosina, San Luis Potosí, Mexico, was evaluated. Method Vanilla fruits were harvested from each locality, in physiological maturity at 32 weeks of age (224 days after pollination), and they were subjected to the same process of curing and variables such as size, humidity percentage water activity, total soluble sugars and aroma compounds in the cured fruit were evaluated. Results It was found that the predominant sugar in vanilla fruits was glucose, with 1.55-4.28%. The fruits from 60 % of the collect sites achieve the minimum standard length. Vanillic acid was the component of the aroma with the greatest variation. The vanillin content of the fruits from all the municipalities had more than 1.2 %, and only the fruit samples from two sites (Tixcuayuca3 and Tamala) achieve the minimum of 2.0 % required by NOM-182-SCFI-2011. Discussion and conclusion There is a significant variation in the content of aromatic compounds, with a low ratio between the aroma compounds (p-hydroxybenzoic, vanillic acid and p-hydroxybenzaldehyde) and vanillin from 6.97-11.87 of the vanilla cured fruits from 14 sites of the Huasteca Potosina, Mexico. These differences are considered the result of the interaction of the environment with the species, culture conditions, nutrition, among others. Despite this it was found several fruits which stand out for their organoleptic quality, mainly for the vanillin content, such the ones grown at the municipalities of Matlapa, Xilita and Tamazunchale.

ABSTRACT The diagnostic procedure in neuromuscular patients is complex. Knowledge of the relative frequency of neuromuscular diseases within the investigated population is important to allow the neurologist to perform the most appropriate diagnostic tests. Objective: To report the relative frequency of common neuromuscular diagnoses in a reference center. Methods: A 17-year chart review of patients with suspicion of myopathy. Results: Among 3,412 examinations, 1,603 (46.98%) yielded confirmatory results: 782 (48.78%) underwent molecular studies, and 821 (51.21%) had muscle biopsies. The most frequent diagnoses were: dystrophinopathy 460 (28.70%), mitochondriopathy 330 (20.59%), spinal muscular atrophy 158 (9.86%), limb girdle muscular dystrophy 157 (9.79%), Steinert myotonic dystrophy 138 (8.61%), facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy 99 (6.17%), and other diagnoses 261 (16.28%). Conclusion: Using the presently-available diagnostic techniques in this service, a specific limb girdle muscular dystrophy subtype diagnosis was reached in 61% of the patients. A neuromuscular-appropriate diagnosis is important for genetic counseling, rehabilitation orientation, and early treatment of respiratory and cardiac complications.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze non-redundant questions on independence in activities of daily living in the elderly, representing the spectrum of dependency. METHODS: Multicenter project with a probabilistic population sample of 5,371 elderly residents in Sao Paulo, SP, Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Fortaleza, CE and Bambui, MG in 2008. A household survey was carried out and a questionnaire with 20 activities of daily living applied for the elderly to self-assess the difficulty/need for help in performing them. The responses were analyzed according to: the prevalence of some kind of difficulty/need for help for each activities of daily living, the frequency of non-response, and the grouping of activities in factor analysis. RESULTS: The personal activities (e.g., dressing) have, on average, a low prevalence of difficulty or need for help, compared to instrumental activities (e.g., shopping), and have lower rates of non- response. In factor analysis it was possible to identify three factors grouping the activities of daily living: one relative to mobility (e.g., walking 100 m), another for personal needs (e.g., bathing) and one relative to what someone else can do for the elderly (e.g., washing clothes). The activities of daily living with the highest eigenvalues in each group were also analyzed in the light of the prevalence of reported need for help and the proportion of non response. Three activities of daily living were selected as representing the spectrum of dependency and being well understood by the elderly - getting out of bed, bathing and walking 100 m. CONCLUSIONS: With only three activities of daily living we can have a simple and reliable screening instrument capable of identifying elderly in need of help in daily life. Estimating demand for care on a daily basis is an important indicator for planning and administration of health services within the paradigm of chronic diseases and population aging.
