ABSTRACT: Okra is a vegetable that stands out for its low production cost, high yield, high nutritional and value and socioeconomic importance in income generation, especially in family farming. In this context, the present study evaluated the physiology, production and water use efficiency of okra under irrigation with saline water and exogenous application of hydrogen peroxide. The treatments were distributed in a randomized block design, in a 5 × 3 factorial arrangement, with five levels of electrical conductivity of irrigation water - ECw (0.3; 1.3; 2.3; 3.3 and 4.3 dS m-1) and three concentrations of hydrogen peroxide - H2O2 (0, 25 and 50 μM), with five replicates, totaling 75 plants. Irrigation with ECw above 0.3 dS m-1 negatively affected stomatal conductance, transpiration, number of fruits, total production and water use efficiency of okra cv. Clemson Americano 80. Hydrogen peroxide at concentration of 22 μM mitigated the effects of salt stress on CO2 assimilation rate, number of fruits, average fruit weight and total production of okra cv. Clemson Americano 80. Water use efficiency is favored by H2O2 application at concentration of 12 μM, especially in plants irrigated with ECw of 0.3 dS m-1.

RESUMO: O quiabeiro é uma hortaliça que se destaca pelo baixo custo de produção, elevada produtividade, alto valor nutricional e pela importância socioeconômica na geração de renda, principalmente na agricultura familiar. Nesse contexto, o presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a fisiologia, a produção e a eficiência no uso da água de quiabeiro sob irrigação com águas salinas e aplicação exógena de peróxido de hidrogênio. Os tratamentos foram distribuídos no delineamento de blocos casualizados, em arranjo fatorial 5 × 3, sendo cinco níveis de condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação (0,3; 1,3; 2,3; 3,3 e 4,3 dS m-1) e três concentrações de peróxido de hidrogênio (0, 25 e 50 μM), com cinco repetições, totalizando 75 plantas. A irrigação com CEa acima de 0,3 dS m-1 afetou negativamente a condutância estomática, a transpiração, o número de frutos, a produção total e a eficiência no uso da água do quiabeiro cv. Clemson Americano 80. O peróxido de hidrogênio na concentração de 22 μM amenizou os efeitos do estresse salino sobre a taxa de assimilação de CO2, número de frutos, peso médio de frutos e produção total de quiabeiro cv. Clemson Americano 80. A eficiência no uso da água é beneficiada pela aplicação de peróxido de hidrogênio na concentração de 12 μM, sobretudo nas plantas irrigadas com CEa de 0,3 dS m-1.

ABSTRACT Cenostigma pyramidale is an endemic species of Brazil, widely spread in the Caatinga biome. The conditions in the semi-arid Northeastern region of Brazil can affect the development of plants due to the irregularity of rainfall, limiting the availability of water and reducing the germination and initial growth of native species. Therefore, seed priming with salicylic acid may mitigate the effects of water stress on plants. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of seed osmopriming with salicylic acid as a water deficit attenuator on germination and initial growth of C. pyramidale seedlings. A completely randomized design in a 5 × 5 factorial scheme, corresponding to five osmotic potentials (Ψs - 0, -0.3, -0.6, -0.9 and -1.2 MPa) and five doses of salicylic acid (0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 mM), with four repetitions of 25 seeds, was used. Germination and initial growth of C. pyramidale were compromised by water deficit. Osmopriming of seeds with salicylic acid at a dose of 0.63 mM is an efficient strategy to reduce the effect of water deficit in the germination stage from the potential of -0.2 MPa. The vigor of C. pyramidale seeds increased under deficit conditions with the application of salicylic acid, with the concentration varying from 0.5 to 1.0 mM. RESUMO A Cenostigma pyramidale é uma espécie endêmica do Brasil, com ampla ocorrência na Caatinga. As condições do Semiárido nordestino podem afetar o desenvolvimento vegetal devido a irregularidade das chuvas, limitando a disponibilidade hídrica, podendo reduzir a germinação e o crescimento inicial das espécies. Dessa forma, o uso de estratégias como o condicionamento de sementes com ácido salicílico pode ser uma estratégia para atenuar o efeito do déficit hídrico nas plantas. O trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o osmocondicionamento de sementes de C. pyramidale com ácido salicílico como atenuante do déficit hídrico na germinação e crescimento inicial de plântulas. ABSTRACT The use of substances that can mitigate the harmful effects of salt stress is a promising alternative for the use of saline water, especially in semi-arid regions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide in mitigating salt stress in the mini watermelon grown in a hydroponic system. The study was carried out in a greenhouse, in an area belonging to the Federal University of Campina Grande, Pombal, Paraíba. The experimental design was completely randomised using a split-plot factorial scheme with four levels of electrical conductivity for the nutrient solution-ECns (2.1, 3.1, 4.1, and 5.1 dS m-1) considered the plots, and four concentrations of hydrogen peroxide-H2O2 (0, 20, 40, and 60 μM) the subplots, with five replications. Abstract Foliar application of hydrogen peroxide can induce plant defense mechanisms against salt stress, favoring plant acclimation in regions with qualitative and quantitative scarcity of water resources, such as the Brazilian semi-arid region. From this perspective, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of foliar hydrogen peroxide application on chlorophyll a fluorescence, growth, and production of okra under irrigation with saline water. The experiment was conducted under field conditions in Pombal, PB, using a randomized block design with a 5 × 3 factorial arrangement corresponding to five electrical conductivity levels of water - ECw (0.3, 1.3, 2.3, 3.3, and 4.3 dS m-1) and three hydrogen peroxide concentrations - H2O2 (0, 25, and 50 μM), with five replications. Abstract Pomegranate is a fruit with potential for exploitation in the Brazilian Northeast as medicine and food. However, the qualitative and quantitative scarcity of water resources is common in this region, requiring the use of water with high salt contents in irrigated agriculture. The adoption of strategies to reduce the harmful effects of salt stress in plants is therefore necessary, and foliar nitrogen (N) fertilization is a promising alternative. The objective of the work, therefore, was to evaluate the photochemical and phytomass aspects of pomegranate seedlings grown under irrigation water salinity and foliar nitrogen fertilization. The experiment was performed in a randomized block design, in an incomplete factorial scheme, with five levels of electrical conductivity of irrigation water - ECw (0.50, 1.15, 2.75, 4.35 and 5.00 dS m-1) and five nitrogen doses - N (0.0, 0.33, 1.15, 1.97 and 2.30 g L-1), totaling nine combinations, generated by the Central Composite Design, with four repetitions and two plants per repetition. Foliar N application at a dose of 1.37 g L-1 increased the production of leaf and root dry phytomass at 90 days after emergence. Salt stress reduced the photochemical activity and phytomass production of pomegranate seedlings, while there was a stimulus by increasing N application up to 2.3 g L-1.

Resumo A romã é uma fruteira com potencial de exploração no Nordeste brasileiro com potencial de uso como composto medicinal e na alimentação. Porém, a escassez qualitativa e quantitativa dos recursos hídricos é comum nesta região, sendo necessário o uso de águas com elevados teores de sais na agricultura irrigada. Assim, é necessário a adoção de estratégias para reduzir os efeitos deletérios do estresse salino sobre as plantas, sendo a adubação foliar nitrogenada uma alternativa promissora. Assim, o objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar os aspectos fotoquímicos e as fitomassas da romãzeira em função da salinidade da água de irrigação e adubação foliar de nitrogênio (N). O experimento foi realizado em delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados, em arranjo fatorial incompleto, com cinco níveis de condutividade elétrica da água - CEa (0,50; 1,15; 2,75; 4,35 e 5,00 dS m-1) e cinco doses de nitrogênio - N (0,0; 0,33; 1,15; 1,97 e 2,30 g L-1), totalizando nove combinações, gerados pela matrix Composto Central de Box, com quatro repetições e duas plantas por repetição. A aplicação foliar de N na dose de 1,37 g L-1, aumentou a produção de fitomassa seca de folhas e da raiz, aos 90 dias após a emergência. O estresse salino reduziu a atividade fotoquímica e a produção de fitomassa das plantas de romã, enquanto houve um estimulo pela aplicação crescente de N até 2,3 g L-1.

ABSTRACT This study was conducted with the objective of evaluating the quantum yield, photosynthetic pigments and biomass accumulation of mini watermelon cv. Sugar Baby, under strategies of irrigation with saline water and potassium fertilization. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design, in a 8 × 3 factorial scheme, with three replicates, corresponding to eight strategies of irrigation with saline water applied at different phenological stages of the crop (control - irrigation with low-salinity water throughout the crop cycle, and salt stress in the vegetative, vegetative/flowering, flowering, flowering/fruiting, fruiting, fruiting/ fruit maturation and fruit maturation stage) and three potassium doses (50, 100 and 150% of the recommendation). The dose of 100% corresponded to 150 mg of K2O kg-1 of soil. Two levels of electrical conductivity of water were used: 0.8 and 4.0 dS m-1. Irrigation with water of 4.0 dS m-1 continuously in the vegetative and flowering stages increased the initial fluorescence and decreased the quantum efficiency of photosystem II of mini watermelon fertilized with 100 and 150% of K recommendation. Fertilization with 50% recommendation did not interfere in the fluorescence parameters of the mini watermelon, regardless of the irrigation management strategy. Chlorophyll a synthesis is inhibited by salt stress in the vegetative/flowering, flowering, flowering/fruiting, fruiting/maturation stages, as well as for total chlorophyll, except for the flowering stage. Application of 4.0 dS m-1 water in the flowering, fruiting/maturation and maturation stages promoted greater biomass accumulation in mini watermelon.

RESUMO Desenvolveu-se este trabalho com o objetivo de avaliar o rendimento quântico, os pigmentos fotossintéticos e o acúmulo de fitomassas da mini-melancia cv. Sugar Baby, sob estratégias de irrigação com águas salinas e adubação potássica. O experimento foi conduzido em delineamento de blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 8 × 3, com três repetições, sendo oito estratégias de irrigação com águas salinas aplicadas em diferentes estádios fenológicos da cultura (controle - irrigação com água de baixa salinidade durante todo o ciclo da cultura, e estresse salino na fase vegetativa, vegetativa/floração, floração, floração/frutificação, frutificação, frutificação/maturação e maturação dos frutos) e três doses de potássio (50, 100 e 150% da recomendação). A dose de 100% correspondeu a 150 mg de K2O kg-1 de solo. Foram utilizados dois níveis de condutividade elétrica da água: 0,8 e 4,0 dS m-1. A irrigação com água de 4,0 dS m-1 de forma contínua nas fases vegetativa e de floração aumentou a fluorescência inicial e diminuiu a eficiência quântica do fotossistema II da mini-melancia adubada com 100 e 150% de recomendação do K. A adubação com 50% de recomendação não interferiu nos parâmetros de fluorescência da mini-melancia, independente da estratégia de manejo de irrigação. A síntese de clorofila a é inibida pelo estresse salino nas fases vegetativa/floração, floração, floração/ frutificação, frutificação/maturação, assim como para a clorofila total, com exceção da fase de floração. A aplicação de água de 4,0 dS m-1 nas fases de floração, frutificação/maturação e maturação promoveu maior acúmulo de fitomassas na mini-melancia.

Esta pesquisa objetivou avaliar a produção de milho Potiguar fertirrigado com urina humana e manipueira associadas à adubação mineral com NPK. Adotou-se delineamento inteiramente casualizados, composto por oito tratamentos (1 - testemunha sem fertirrigação; 2 - fertirrigações com NPK; 3 - apenas urina humana; 4 - apenas manipueira; 5 - urina humana mais manipueira; 6 - urina humana mais PK; 7 - manipueira mais NP; e 8 - urina humana, manipueira e P) e cinco repetições. Aos 110 dias após emergência foram avaliados comprimento e diâmetro da espiga, número de grão por espiga, fileiras de grãos por espigas, grãos por fileira, massa seca da parte aérea, massa seca da espiga com e sem palha, massa seca dos grãos e massa seca de 100 grãos. Com exceção da massa seca de 100 grãos, houve diferença estatística significativa entre tratamentos e entre médias analisadas. Urina humana pode substituir a adubação nitrogenada e a manipueira a potássica aplicada via fertirrigação na cultura do milho. A associação destes efluentes tem potencial para substituir a adubação mineral requerida pela cultura do milho. Com exceção dos tratamentos 1 e 4, os demais podem ser indicados como os melhores tratamentos.

This research aimed to evaluate the production of Potiguar maize fertirrigated with human urine and, cassava wastewater associated with mineral fertilization with NPK. A completely randomized design was used, consisting of eight treatments (1 - control without fertigation, 2 - fertigations with NPK, 3 - only human urine, 4 - only cassava wastewater, 5 - cassava wastewater plus human urine, 6 - human urine plus PK; - cassava wastewater plus NP, and 8 - human urine, cassava wastewater and P) and five replicates. At 110 days after emergence were evaluated the length and diameter of the spike, number of grain per spike, rows of grain per spike, grain per row, dry mass of the aerial part, dry mass of the spike with and without straw, dry mass of the grains and mass dry of 100 grains. Except for the dry matter of 100 grains, there was a statistically significant difference between treatments and between analyzed means. Human urine can substitute the nitrogen fertilization and the cassava wastewater applied via fertirrigation substitute the potassium in the maize crop. The association of these effluents has the potential to replace the mineral fertilization required by the maize crop. With the exception of treatments 1 and 4, the others can be indicated as the best treatments.

El agua salina debe considerarse una alternativa para la expansión de las zonas agricolas con riego. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el efecto del riego con agua salina y fertilización nitrogenada en el crecimiento del girasol (Helianthus annuus L.) cv. EMBRAPA 122-V2000. El estudio se desarrolló en un invernadero de la Universidad Federal de Campina Grande, Paraiba, Brasil, entre abril y julio de 2012. El diseño experimental fue totalmente al azar con tres repeticiones, en arreglo factorial 5×5; niveles de salinidad del agua de riego con conductividad eléctrica (ECa) de 0.7, 1.7, 2.7, 3.7 y 4.7 dS m-1 (25 °C) y dosis de N de 50, 75, 100, 125 y 150 mg kg-1, en 75 unidades experimentales. Las variables evaluadas durante el ciclo de crecimiento fueron: altura de la planta, diámetro del tallo, número de hojas, área foliar, inicio de floración, apertura máxima de la inflorescencia, diámetro interno y externo del capítulo floral, y contenido de clorofila. Los resultados con ECa de 0.7 dS m-1 decrecieron linealmente. La interacción salinidad del agua del riego y fertilización nitrogenada no fue significativa en las variables, excepto en la altura de la planta 15 d después de la siembra. Las variables de la floración se retardaron con el aumento de la salinidad del agua de riego y el contenido de clorofila disminuyó, pero aumentó con el N.

Abstract Water is a resource for agriculture, urban and industrial activities. It is insufficient in the arid climate areas in the north east of Brazil. Saline water is as an alternative to the expansion of agricultural irrigation areas. Our objective was to assess the effect of irrigation with saline water and nitrogen fertilization on sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) cv. EMBRAPA 122-V2000 growth. This study was carried out in a greenhouse at the Campina Grande Federal University, Paraiba, Brazil, between April and July 2012. The experimental design was completely random with three replications in a 5×5 factorial arrangement; salinity levels in irrigation water, with electrical conductivity (ECa) of 0.7, 1.7, 2.7, 3.7 and 4.7 dS m-1 (25 °C) and N doses of 50, 75, 100, 125 and 150 mg kg-1 as factors, in 75 experimental units. The variables evaluated during the growth cycle were: plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, leaf area, flowering onset, maximum inflorescence opening, inner and external flower diameter, and chlorophyll content. The results with ECa of 0.7 dS m-1 linearly decreased. The salinity of the irrigation water and nitrogen fertilization interaction was not significant in the evaluated variables, except for the plant height 15 d after sowing. The flowering variables were delayed as the salinity of the irrigation water increased and chlorophyll content decreased, but increased with N.

High population growth during the last decades and reduced water resources, both in quantity and quality, have made necessary the use of saline water in agricultural activities. This study was conducted to evaluate the influence of irrigation with water of varying salinity in different phenological phases associated with nitrogen fertilization on the physiology, growth and yield of castor bean cv. BRS Energia. Research was carried out in lysimeters under field conditions in Pombal-PB, Brazil, from September 2011 to January 2012. A completely randomized block design arranged in a 5x2x2 factorial design was adopted, with three replications, testing five levels of electrical conductivity of irrigation water (ECw = 0.3, 1.2, 2.1, 3.0 and 3.9 dS m-1), two strategies of management of water salinity: 1) irrigation with low salinity water during the vegetative stage and application of different salinity levels in the reproductive phase and 2) irrigation with different ECw levels throughout the crop cycle, and two nitrogen doses (100 and 160 mg N kg-1 soil). Leaf (DML) and stem (DMS) dry matter and the number of fruits (NFruPC) and seeds (NSeePC) of the primary cluster were evaluated. Irrigation with ECw exceeding 0.3 dS m-1 affected DML and DMS negatively. The greatest accumulation of dry matter was observed in plants which were not irrigated with saline water in the initial development phase. Irrigation with saline water caused changes in gas exchange of the castor bean plant, with varying effects according to the management strategy adopted. The nitrogen dose of 160 mg N kg-1 soil increased DMS. Different ECw levels negatively affected production, regardless of the development stage. No significant interaction effect was observed among the factors studied and the variables evaluated.

El alto crecimiento de la población durante las últimas décadas y la disminución de los recursos hídricos, tanto en cantidad como en calidad, han hecho el uso necesario de agua salina en las actividades agrícolas. Esta investigación se realizó para evaluar la influencia del riego con agua salina en las diferentes fases fenológicas en ricino cv. Energía BRS. La investigación se realizó bajo las condiciones de campo en Pombal-PB, Brasil, desde septiembre de 2011 a enero de 2012. El diseño experimental fue de bloques completos al azar, dispuestos en un diseño factorial 5x2x2 y fue adoptada con tres repeticiones. Se consideraron cinco niveles de conductividad eléctrica del agua de riego (ECw = 0,3; 1,2 ; 2,1; 3,0 y 3,9 dS m-1); dos estrategias de gestión de la salinidad del agua (riego con agua de baja salinidad durante la etapa vegetativa y la aplicación de diferentes niveles de salinidad en la fase reproductiva y riego con diferentes niveles de ECw en todo el ciclo de cultivo) y dos dosis de nitrógeno (100 y 160 mg de N kg-1 suelo). Se evaluó materia seca de hojas (DML) y el tallo (DMS); número de frutos (NFruPC) y número de semillas (NSeePC) del racimo principal. El riego con ECw superior a 0,3 dS m-1 afectó negativamente a DML y DMS. La mayor acumulación de materia seca se observó en las plantas que no fueron irrigados con aguas salinas en la fase inicial de desarrollo. El suministro de nitrógeno en dosis de 160 mg N kg -1 suelo aumentó el DMS. No se observó efecto interactivo significativo entre los factores y las variables estudiadas.
