Background: Educational environment refers to the material resources and interpersonal relationships of an educational institution. Aim: To describe the educational environment of a Peruvian medical school and to explore a possible association between curricular years and the educational environment. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using the Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) to evaluate the educational environment of a Peruvian medical school. Data collection consisted in online surveys completed voluntarily by 1st through 6th year medical students between April and October 2015. Results: The questionnaire was completed by 828 of 2,421 (34.2%) students. The mean DREEM score was 117 ± 25.6 of a maximum of 200. A poorer perception of the educational environment was associated with later years in the curriculum, when analysis was adjusted for gender, age and academic status (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The educational environment of this medical school scored positively (> 100 points). However, it was evident that medical students in later curricular years had a more negative perception of the educational environment compared to those in earlier academic years.

ABSTRACT The objective of the study was to determine the psychometric properties of the Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) questionnaire in students of a Peruvian medical school. Participants were first-to-sixth-year students, invited to participate through a web platform. In the analysis the alpha coefficient of Cronbach was used to evaluate internal consistency. In addition, a confirmatory factorial analysis was performed to evaluate the construct validity of the subscales of the DREEM. The adjustment quality indexes used were: Root Mean Square Error Approximation (RMSEA), the Index of Benchmarking (CFI), Tucker-Lewis Index (TLI), and the Standardized Root Mean Residual (SRMR). The results showed that the social self-perception dimension had an alpha of Cronbach of less than 0.70. In addition, the quality indices did not support the five-dimensional structure of the DREEM. In conclusion, the DREEM questionnaire did not perform optimally in this Peruvian sample.

RESUMEN El objetivo del estudio fue determinar las propiedades psicométricas del cuestionario Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) en estudiantes de una facultad de Medicina peruana. Los participantes fueron los alumnos de primero a sexto año, invitados a participar mediante una plataforma web. En el análisis se utilizó el coeficiente alfa de Cronbach para evaluar consistencia interna. Además, se realizó un análisis factorial confirmatorio para evaluar la validez de constructo de las subescalas del DREEM. Los índices de bondad de ajuste utilizados fueron: error cuadrático medio de aproximación (RMSEA), el índice de ajuste comparativo (CFI), índice Tucker-Lewis (TLI) y el residuo estandarizado cuadrático medio (SRMR). Los resultados mostraron que la dimensión Autopercepción Social tuvo un alfa de Cronbach menor a 0,70. Además, los índices de bondad no apoyaron la estructura de cinco dimensiones del DREEM. Como conclusión, el cuestionario DREEM no tuvo un desempeño óptimo en esta muestra peruana.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the factors associated with level of knowledge and attitudes toward research among undergraduate medical students in Peru. METHODS: In this analytical cross-sectional study, a validated questionnaire on knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to research was applied to a representative sample of students at 17 Peruvian medical schools. The categorical and quantitative variables were subjected to simple two-factor analysis with adjustment for intraclass correlation. Prevalence ratios were derived on the basis of generalized linear models using bifactorial and multifactorial analysis. RESULTS: Questionnaires from 1 554 students (51.0% women) with an average age of 20.5 ± 2.86 years were analyzed. Only 46.7% of the respondents had a good level of knowledge and 37.7% had appropriate attitudes toward research. The variables that correlated with a good level of knowledge were the respondent having completed at least four years of academic study, belonging to a research group, and having an adviser. Having appropriate attitudes toward research correlated with being a woman and having an adviser. No differences were found between the level of knowledge and attitudes of the students at the universities studied. CONCLUSIONS: In general, the level of knowledge about research was unsatisfactory and the attitudes toward it were inappropriate. In order to change this situation, it will be critical to make changes in the curriculum to ensure that students engage in research from the beginning of their academic careers and develop research skills in their final years of study.

OBJETIVO: Identificar los factores asociados con el nivel de conocimientos y la actitud relacionados con la investigación en los estudiantes de pregrado de la carrera de medicina en Perú. MÉTODOS: Estudio transversal analítico. Se aplicó un cuestionario validado sobre conocimientos, actitud y prácticas relacionados con la investigación a una muestra representativa de estudiantes de 17 facultades de medicina de Perú. Se realizó el análisis simple y bifactorial para las variables categóricas y cuantitativas, con ajuste de la correlación intraclase. Se modelaron las razones de prevalencia mediante análisis bifactorial y multifactorial con modelos lineales generalizados. RESULTADOS: Se analizaron los cuestionarios de 1 554 estudiantes (51,0% mujeres) con una edad promedio de 20,5 años ± 2,86. Solo 46,7% de los encuestados tenía un buen nivel de conocimientos y 37,7% una adecuada actitud hacia la investigación. Las variables asociadas con el buen nivel de conocimientos fueron: el año académico del encuestado a partir del 4.º, pertenecer a un grupo de investigación y contar con un asesor. Tener una adecuada actitud hacia la investigación se asoció con ser mujer y tener un asesor. No se encontraron diferencias entre el nivel de conocimientos y la actitud de los estudiantes de las universidades estudiadas. CONCLUSIONES: En general, el nivel de conocimientos sobre la investigación es deficiente y la actitud hacia ella, inadecuada. Para cambiar esta situación, es prioritario hacer cambios curriculares que garanticen la incorporación de los estudiantes a la investigación desde el inicio de la carrera y desarrollar competencias en investigación en los últimos años de estudio.

Objective: To evaluate the characteristics of Peruvian research studies on mental disorders (MD) published in SciELO-Peru during 2006-2011. Methods: A bibliometric study was conducted that included scientific papers on MD published in medical and psychological indexed journals in SciELO during 2006-2011. Articles with at least one Peruvian author whose main or secondary objectives were any MD were included. Main variables that were analyzed included kind of MD studied, author´s affiliation, references and financing sources. Results: A total of 686 papers were identified in six journals, in 51 (7.4%) of these papers a MD was the main objective. Depression, substance abuse and sleeping disorders were the main topics covered. Major financing institutions were Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia and Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos. Seven studies (13.7%) received financial support. Conclusions: Few Peruvian publications on MD were identified.

Objetivo: Determinar las características de los trabajos de investigación sobre Trastornos Mentales (TM) publicados por autores peruanos en SciELO-Perú, durante el periodo 2006 - 2011. Material y métodos: Estudio bibliométrico. Se incluyeron artículos científicos sobre TM publicados en revistas indizadas en SciELO-Perú en el periodo 2006-2011. Se realizó una revisión de todos los artículos publicados en revistas de medicina y psicología. Se seleccionaron los artículos con al menos un autor peruano y que abordaran algún TM como objetivo principal, objetivo secundario, o como parte de un objetivo mayor. Las variables analizadas comprendieron: tipo de trastorno, filiación de los autores, citas del artículo y financiamiento recibido. Resultados: Se identificaron 686 artículos originales publicados por autores peruanos en seis revistas; de estos, 51 (7,4%) tuvieron como objetivo principal TM. Las áreas temáticas que se desarrollaron con más frecuencia fueron depresión, abuso de sustancias y trastornos del sueño. Las instituciones con mayor aporte fueron la Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia y la Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos. Además, siete estudios (13,7%) mencionaron haber recibido apoyo económico. Conclusiones: Se identificaron pocas publicaciones sobre TM en revistas peruanas.
