ABSTRACT Segmental liming involves the incorporation of lime into the subsoil in narrow strips, typically associated with deep ripping. This study aimed to evaluate the vertical and horizontal distribution of soil acidity and nutrient availability in a Ferralsol under no-tillage five months after segmental liming. The equipment used for lime application featured a chisel of seven rods with a spacing of 70 cm, and a working depth of 40 cm. The lime rate used was 1.0 Mg ha-1 of limestone with high effective neutralizing value (ENV = 170%). Soil samples were taken at eight layers (0-5, 5-10, 10-15, 15-20, 20-25, 25-30, 30-35, and 35-40 cm), in the passage line of the equipment and at 10, 20, and 30 cm to the side between rods. The available soil phosphors (P) and potassium (K) did not exhibit any horizontal and vertical changes as a result of segmental liming. Conversely, within the 10-25 cm depth along the rod application line, the soil pH increased from 5.3 to 5.9. Additionally, the exchangeable Ca increased from 60 to 78 mmolc dm-3 and the exchangeable Mg increased from 21 to 32 mmolc dm-3. The base saturation also increased from 56 to 73%, and the Al saturation decreased from 11 to 2%, when compared to samples collected at 10, 20, and 30 cm from the segmental liming application line. Abstract Objective: This study investigated the incidence of suicidal ideation and its associated risk factors in the state of São Paulo in the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (Estudo Longitudinal de Saúde do Adulto [ELSA-Brasil]) cohort during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Methods: In a pre-pandemic ELSA-Brasil onsite assessment in 2016-2018 (wave 3) and a pandemic online assessment in May-July 2020 (wave COVID), we assessed suicidal ideation using the Clinical Interview Schedule-Revised (CIS-R). Single and multi predictor logistic regressions were performed using sociodemographic characteristics, household financial impact during the pandemic, presence of previous chronic diseases, alcohol abuse, adverse childhood experiences (ACE), living alone, and previous common mental disorders (CMD) as predictors. Incidence of suicidal ideation was used as outcome. Results: Out of 4,191 participants in wave 3, 2,117 (50.5%) also answered the COVID wave. There was a threefold increase in suicide ideation, from 34 (1.8%) to 104 (5.6%) participants. In multiple predictor models, we found that previous CMD (odds ratio [OR] 7.17; 95% confidence interval [95%CI] 4.43 - 11.58) and ACE (OR 1.72; 95%CI 1.09 - 2.72) increased the odds of incident suicidal ideation. The sociodemographic predictors female sex, younger age, and low income were significant risk factors in the single predictor models only. Conclusion: These findings underscore the importance of monitoring and supporting individuals who suffered ACE and have a history of mental health disorders. This is especially critical in times of heightened societal stress, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. ABSTRACT Introduction: Providing widespread access to thyroidectomies while consolidating services in high-volume centers is a significant challenge in healthcare. In this context, from a national perspective, we aimed to analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the institutional case volumes of thyroid surgery in Brazil. Material and methods: We analyzed retrospective thyroidectomy data from the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System (Datasus), stratifying institutions into low-volume, intermediate-volume, and high-volume centers (<10, 10-100, and >100 thyroidectomies/year, respectively). We assessed the differences in absolute numbers and percentages of thyroidectomies performed during the pandemic years (2020-2022) compared with the pre-pandemic year (2019). Differences in the proportion of institutions based on case volumes from 2019 to 2022 were assessed using Cochran's Q test. Results and discussion: In 2019, 556 Brazilian institutions performed 15,331 thyroidectomies. Of these, 46.4% were categorized as low-volume, 48.4% as intermediate-volume, and 5.2% as high-volume institutions, accounting for 5.5%, 61.4%, and 33.1% of the thyroidectomies, respectively. Compared with 2019, the volume of thyroidectomies was lower by 41.2% in 2020, 37.0% in 2021, and 12.8% in 2022. When analyzing the proportions of institutions that maintained their pre-pandemic case volume in the first pandemic year, the intermediate and high-volume institutions experienced reductions of 34.9% (p < 0.001) and 58.6% (p < 0.001), respectively, while low-volume institutions presented a 4.3% reduction (p = 0.081). Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the landscape of thyroidectomies in Brazil, particularly affecting intermediate-volume and high-volume institutions, while low-volume institutions showed greater resilience. RESUMO O óleo de Caryocar villosum é usado na medicina popular amazônica para tratar dores e condições inflamatórias. Assim, avaliamos as propriedades antiinflamatórias e antinociceptivas do extrato etanólico obtido das cascas dos frutos desta espécie. Os testes de contorções induzidas por ácido acético, hiperalgesia mecânica induzida por carragenina, formalina, edema de pata induzido por carragenina e peritonite induzida por carragenina foram usados em camundongos. O extrato etanólico de C. villosum obtido das cascas dos frutos inibiu significativamente o número de contorções abdominais, a hiperalgesia mecânica e o tempo de lambida da pata na segunda fase do teste de formalina. Na dose de 300 mg kg-1, o extrato também reduziu significativamente o volume de edema formado na fase tardia e reduziu o recrutamento de leucócitos e neutrófilos na cavidade peritoneal, bem como os níveis de quimiocina CXCL1. Sugere-se que o extrato atenua o recrutamento de leucócitos por meio da inibição da ativação de CXCL1. A atividade antinociceptiva periférica ocorre por meio da modulação da via opioide pois o pré-tratamento com o extrato etanólico de C. villosum reverteu a antinocicepção induzida pela naltrexona.

ABSTRACT The oil of Caryocar villosum is used in Amazonian folk medicine to treat pain and inflammatory conditions. So, we assessed the anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive properties of the ethanolic extract obtained from the fruit peels of this species. The acetic acid-induced writhing, carrageenan-induced mechanical hyperalgesia, formalin, carrageenan-induced paw edema and carrageenan-induced peritonitis tests were used on mice. The C. villosum ethanolic extract significantly inhibited the number of abdominal writhes, mechanical hyperalgesia and paw licking time in the second phase of the formalin test. At a dose of 300 mg kg-1, the extract also significantly reduced the volume of edema formed in the late phase and reduced the recruitment of leukocytes and neutrophils in the peritoneal cavity, as well as CXCL1 chemokine levels. It is suggested that the extract attenuates the leukocyte recruitment by inhibiting the CXCL1 activation. The peripheral antinociceptive activity occured through opioid pathway modulation because pretreatment with C. villosum ethanolic extract reversed the naltrexone-induced antinociception.

Abstract Protease-activated receptors (PARs) are metabotropic G-protein-coupled receptors that are activated via proteolytic cleavage of a specific sequence of amino acids in their N-terminal region. PAR2 has been implicated in mediating allergic airway inflammation. This study aims to study the effect of PAR2 antagonist ENMD1068in lung inflammation and airway remodeling in experimental asthma. Allergic lung inflammation was induced in sensitized BALB/c mice through intranasal instillations of ovalbumin (OVA), and mice were pretreated with ENMD1068 1 hour before each OVA challenge. Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) was collected, and the lungs were removed at different time intervals after OVA challenge to analyze inflammation, airway remodeling and airway hyperresponsiveness. Ovalbumin promoted leukocyte infiltration into BALF in a PAR2-dependent manner. ENMD1068 impaired eosinophil peroxidase (EPO) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity in the lung parenchyma into BALF and reduced the loss of dynamic pulmonary compliance, lung resistance in response to methacholine, mucus production, collagen deposition and chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 5 expression compared to those in OVA-challenged mice. We propose that proteases released after an allergen challenge may be crucial to the development of allergic asthma in mice, and PAR2 blockade may be useful as a new pharmacological approach for the treatment of airway allergic diseases. Abstract Introduction Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) as monotherapy has been increasingly used to enhance the activity of brain networks. However, it is unclear whether a combination of distinct NIBS approaches could enhance prefrontal cortical (PFC) activity. Objective We propose to investigate the combined and standalone effects of two NIBS modalities on the PFC through a working memory task, single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), and salivary cortisol. We hypothesize that the combined protocol will provoke greater changes in the collected measures compared to the remining protocols. Methods A randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled, full-factorial design will be conducted. The effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS) will be investigated over four different sessions (sham tDCS + sham iTBS, anodal tDCS + sham iTBS, anodal tDCS + active iTBS and sham tDCS + active iTBS) in 30 healthy adult volunteers. A 99mTc-ethylene cysteine dimer (99mTC-ECD) will be administered during the NIBS session and neuroimaging will be acquired within one hour. Salivary cortisol will be collected before and after each session and an n-back working memory task will be applied after the end of each NIBS session. The outcomes will be cerebral perfusion alterations (99mTC-ECD SPECT), accuracy and reaction time in the n-back task, and changes in salivary cortisol level. Conclusion The results from this trial can guide future therapeutic protocols for NIBS treatments stimulating the PFC by demonstrating that the combination of NIBS techniques is feasible, tolerable, and can lead to greater enhancement of PFC activity.

Abstract Carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) offer several advantages in the aeronautical and automotive industry due to their combination of lightweight, high strength, and corrosion resistance. CFRP parts are usually produced in near-net-shape; however, additional machining processes are often required for achieving desired dimensional accuracy and surface finish. Thus, this work evaluates the influence of the cutting parameters in CFRP end milling to generate a better surface finish. The experiment was designed using a three-factor, three-level Box-Behnken considering feed rate (f), axial depth of cut (ap), and cooling conditions (cc) as controllable factors, and roughness parameters (Ra, Rq, Rz, Rt) as response variables (the occurrence of defects was evaluated qualitatively). Results indicated a strong influence of the quadratic effect of axial depth of cut and its interactions with feed rate and cooling condition on the roughness values and a milder but significant influence of the feed rate and cooling conditions. Multivariate analysis returned the optimum level of input parameters (f= 0.21 mm/rev and ap= 0.8 mm with cooled compressed air), resulting in Ra= 1.58 µm, Rq= 1.98 µm, Rz= 9.39 µm, Rt= 13.63 µm. Also, no defects were observed after machining under the optimum conditions.

ABSTRACT Objective: This study aimed to explore the patterns of radioactive iodine (RAI) use for differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) in Brazil over the past 20 years. Materials and methods: A retrospective analysis of the DTC-related RAI prescriptions, from 2000 to 2018, retrieved from the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System (Datasus) and National Supplementary Health Agency (ANS) database was performed. RAI activities prescriptions were re-classified as low (30-50 mCi), intermediate (100 mCi), or high activities (>100 mCi). Results: The number of DTC-related RAI prescriptions increased from 0.45 to 2.28/100,000 inhabitants from 2000 to 2015, declining onwards, closing 2018 at 1.87/100,000. In 2018, population-adjusted RAI prescriptions by state ranged from 0.07 to 4.74/100,000 inhabitants. Regarding RAI activities, in the 2000 to 2008 period, the proportion of high-activities among all RAI prescriptions increased from 51.2% to 74.1%. From 2009 onwards, there was a progressive reduction in high-activity prescriptions in the country, closing 2018 at 50.1%. In 2018, the practice of requesting high-activities varied from 16% to 82% between Brazilian states. Interestingly, variability of RAI use do not seem to be related to RAI referral center volume nor state socio-economic indicators. Conclusion: In recent years, there has been a trend towards the lower prescription of RAI, and a reduction of high-activity RAI prescriptions for DTC in Brazil. Also, significative inter-state and inter-institutional variability on RAI use was documented. These results suggest that actions to advance DTC healthcare quality surveillance should be prioritized.

Objective: Noninvasive brain stimulation (NIBS) techniques, such as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), are increasingly being used to treat mental disorders, particularly major depression. The aim of this comprehensive review is to summarize the main advances, limitations, and perspectives of the field. Methods: We searched PubMed and other databases from inception to July 2017 for articles, particularly systematic reviews and meta-analyses, evaluating the use of NIBS in psychiatric disorders. Results: We reviewed the mechanisms of action, safety, tolerability, efficacy, and relevant clinical parameters of NIBS. Repetitive TMS is already an established technique for the treatment of depression, and there is theoretically room for further methodological development towards a high-end therapeutic intervention. In contrast, tDCS is a technically easier method and therefore potentially suitable for wider clinical use. However the evidence of its antidepressant efficacy is less sound, and a recent study found tDCS to be inferior to antidepressant pharmacotherapy. Clinical trials using rTMS for other mental disorders produced mixed findings, whereas tDCS use has not been sufficiently appraised. Conclusion: The most promising results of NIBS have been obtained for depression. These techniques excel in safety and tolerability, although their efficacy still warrants improvement.

ABSTRACT Background Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a major public health problem in Brazil. HBV endemicity is usually moderate to low according to geographic regions, and high prevalence of this virus has been reported in people of some specific Brazilian counties, including those with a strong influence of Italian colonization in southern Brazil. Analysis of HBV diversity and identification of the main risk factors to HBV infection are necessary to understand hepatitis B epidemiology in these high prevalence regions in southern Brazil. Objective To investigate epidemiological characteristics and HBV genotypes and subgenotypes circulating in a specific city with high HBV prevalence. Methods A cross-sectional study was performed with 102 HBV chronically infected individuals, recruited in reference outpatient clinics for viral hepatitis in a city of high HBV prevalence (Bento Gonçalves) in Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil between July and December 2010. Socio-demographic, clinical and behavior-related variables were collected in a structured questionnaire. HBV serological markers (HBsAg, anti-HBc), viral load, genotypes/subgenotypes and drug resistance were evaluated and comparatively analyzed among all patients. Results The HBV infected subjects had a mean age of 44.9 (±12.2) years, with 86 patients (84.3%) reporting to have a family history of HBV infection, 51 (50.0%) to share personal objects, and were predominantly of Italian descendants (61; 64.9%). There was a predominance of genotype D (49/54; 90.7%), but genotype A was also detected (5/54; 9.3%). Subgenotypes D1 (1; 4.7%), D2 (3; 14.3%), and D3 (17; 81.0%) were identified. LAM-resistant mutation (rtM204I) and ADV-resistant mutations (rtA181V) were detected in only one patient each. Conclusions These results demonstrate a pivotal role of intrafamilial transmission for HBV spreading in this population. Furthermore, there is a high prevalence of HBV genotype D in this region.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a acurácia das regressões que definem os limites do intervalo hídrico ótimo e a validade do uso deste indicador ao se considerar a variabilidade espacial de lavouras sob sistema plantio direto. Foram coletadas 100 amostras de solo com estrutura preservada, em áreas com dimensões de 10x10 m, em Latossolo Vermelho distrófico, Nitossolo Vermelho distroférrico e Latossolo Vermelho aluminoférrico, manejados sob sistema plantio direto. Determinaram-se porosidade de aeração (0,10 m3 m-3), capacidade de campo (potencial de -0,006 MPa), ponto de murcha permanente (potencial de -1,5 MPa) e resistência mecânica do solo à penetração crítica (2 MPa). As regressões que descreveram a capacidade de campo tiveram os menores coeficientes de determinação, enquanto as que descreveram a porosidade de aeração, o ponto de murcha permanente e a resistência mecânica do solo à penetração apresentaram os maiores valores. As regressões que definem o limite da capacidade de campo não são acuradas em descrever a variação na umidade volumétrica do solo por meio da densidade do solo, e os solos avaliados apresentam elevada variabilidade espacial para o intervalo hídrico ótimo.

Abstract The objective of this work was to evaluate the regressions that define the least limiting water range limits and the validity of using this indicator considering the spatial variability of crops under a no-tillage system. One hundred undisturbed soil samples were collected in areas with dimensions of 10x10 m, in two different Oxisols and an Ultisol managed under no-tillage. Air-filled porosity (0.10 m3 m-3), field capacity (potential of -0.006 MPa), permanent wilting point (potential of -1.5 MPa), and soil mechanical resistance (2 MPa) were determined. The regressions that described field capacity had the lowest coefficients of determination, whereas those that described air-filled porosity, permanent wilting point, and soil mechanical resistance to penetration showed the highest values. Regression adjustments that define field capacity limits are not accurate in explaining variation on volumetric soil water content through bulk density, and the evaluated soils show high spatial variability regarding the least limiting water range.

Adotou-se delineamento em blocos ao acaso com quatro repetições, em esquema fatorial 2×4; no fator 1 foram testados: dois genótipos de soja (BMX Turbo e Coodetec 250) e no fator 2 foram avaliadas quatro combinações de inoculação (sementes não inoculadas mas que receberam 200 kg ha-1 de N na semeadura; sementes inoculado com Bradyrhizobium japonicum; sementes inoculadas com Azospirillum brasilense; sementes com inoculação de B. japonicum e A. brasilense). No estádio R8 foi avaliado as variáveis biométricas: diâmetro de coleto (DC); altura de planta (ALP); número de vagens (NVS); número de grãos por vagem (NGV); massa seca de parte aérea (MPA); massa seca de vagens (MSV); produtividade por planta (PPP); teor de N na parte aérea (TNA) e teor de N nos grãos (TNG). Foi observado resposta diferenciada dos genótipos de soja BMX Turbo e Coodetec 250 à inoculação de sementes com bactérias diazotróf icas do gênero B. japonicum ou A. brasilense na altura de plantas e nitrogênio na parte aérea. Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the productivity and yield components of two soybean genotypes grown in a greenhouse and inoculated with diazotrophic bacteria of the genera Bradyrhizobium and Azospirillum. We adopted a complete randomized block design with four replications in a factorial 2 × 4; factor 1 was two genotypes of soybean (BMX Turbo and Coodetec 250) and factor 2 was four combinations of inoculation (seeds not inoculated but fertilized with 200 kg ha-1 N at sowing, seed inoculation with Bradyrhizobium japonicum; seeds inoculated with Azospirillum brasilense; seeds inoculated with B. japonicum and A. brasilense). At stage R8, the following biometric variables were assessed: diameter collect (DIC); plant height (ALP); number of pods (NVS); number of seeds per pod (NGV); shoot dry mass (MPA); pod dry mass (MSV); yield per plant (PPP); N content in shoots (TNA) and N content in grains (TNG). Dif ferential response of soybean genotypes BMX Turbo and Coodetec 250 and of seed inoculated with diazotrophic bacteria B. japonicum and A. brasilense in plant height and nitrogen in the shoots was observed. The combined inoculation of B. japonicum and A. brasilense seed enhanced the productive performance of soybean genotype in BMX Turbo.

Resumo Que fatores motivacionais afetam a retenção e a satisfação de servidores públicos? A questão é relevante para a administração pública brasileira, pois problemas de evasão e insatisfação profissional têm sido observados em várias carreiras públicas no país. Ao analisar a carreira dos especialistas em Políticas Públicas e Gestão Governamental (EPPGG), o artigo contribui à literatura sobre motivação no serviço público, que enfatiza a importância dos fatores motivacionais intrínsecos. A análise mostra que: i) a evasão relaciona-se a fatores extrínsecos, ligados à remuneração, enquanto ii) a satisfação relaciona-se não apenas a fatores extrínsecos, mas principalmente a fatores intrínsecos e simbólicos, ligados à natureza do trabalho. A contribuição à agenda de pesquisas reforça a importância de se considerar lógicas institucionais e aspectos culturais das carreiras públicas em estratégias para investigar as dinâmicas motivacionais que afetam as decisões profissionais dos servidores.

Abstract: Which motivational factors affect public servers' retention and job satisfaction? This question is relevant in the context of contemporaneous Brazilian public administration, once problems related to evasion and job dissatisfaction have been observed in diverse public careers in the country. Analyzing the career of the experts in Public Policies and Government Management (EPPGG), the article contributes to the literature about motivation in the public service, which emphasizes the importance of inherent motivational factors. The paper shows that: i) evasion is related to extrinsic factors linked to salaries and payments, while ii) satisfaction is related not only to extrinsic, but also - and mainly - intrinsic and symbolic factors related to the nature of work. Resumen ¿Cuáles son los factores motivacionales que afectan la retención y satisfacción de los empleados públicos? Esta pregunta es relevante en el contexto del gobierno brasileño contemporáneo, ya que los problemas de evasión y la insatisfacción laboral se han observado en varias carreras públicas en el país. Este trabajo desarrolla un análisis teórico y empírico teniendo como objeto la carrera de expertos en Políticas Públicas y Gestión de Gobierno (EPPGG), y contribuye a la literatura sobre motivación en el servicio público, que enfatiza la importancia de los factores motivacionales intrínsecos. Se observó que la evasión es relacionada a factores extrínsecos vinculados a la remuneración, mientras que la satisfacción también está relacionada a factores intrínsecos relacionados con la naturaleza del trabajo. La contribución a estudios futuros refuerza la importancia de que se adopte las lógicas institucionales e aspectos culturales de carreras públicas en estrategias investigativas sobre la dinámica de motivación que afectan a las decisiones de los servidores.

Resumo Foram encontradas seis espécies pertencentes a quatro gêneros de Cucurbitaceae nas formações de canga da Serra dos Carajás (Pará, Brasil): Cayaponia tayuya, Gurania bignoniacea, G. sinuata, G. subumbellata, Helmontia cardiophylla e Melothria pendula. São apresentadas descrições detalhadas, comentários e ilustrações das espécies.

Abstract Six species belonging to four genera of Cucurbitaceae were found in the canga formations of the Serra dos Carajás (Pará state, Brazil): Cayaponia tayuya, Gurania bignoniacea, G. sinuata, G. subumbellata, Helmontia cardiophylla e Melothria pendula. Detailed descriptions, comments, and illustrations of the species are presented.
