Resumo No final de 2019, o surto de COVID-19 foi relatado em Wuhan, China. O surto se espalhou rapidamente para vários países, tornando-se uma emergência de saúde pública de interesse internacional. Sem uma vacina ou medicamentos antivirais, medidas de controle são necessárias para entender a evolução dos casos. Neste estudo, relatamos por análise espacial o padrão espacial do surto do COVID-19. Nosso local de estudo foi no estado de São Paulo, Brasil, onde o primeiro caso da doença foi confirmado. Aplicamos o método “Kernel Density” para gerar superfícies que indicam onde há maior densidade de casos e, consequentemente, maior risco de confirmação de novos casos. O padrão espacial da pandemia de COVID-19 foi observado no estado de São Paulo, em que a região metropolitana do estado foi a que apresentou a maior quantidade de casos, sendo classificada como um “hot spot”. Além disso, as principais rodovias e aeroportos que conectam a capital às cidades com maior densidade populacional foram classificadas como áreas de média densidade pelo método “Kernel Density”. Isso indica uma expansão gradual da capital para o interior. Portanto, as análises espaciais são fundamentais para entender a disseminação do vírus e sua associação com outros dados espaciais pode ser essencial para orientar as medidas de controle.

Abstract At the end of 2019, the outbreak of COVID-19 was reported in Wuhan, China. The outbreak spread quickly to several countries, becoming a public health emergency of international interest. Without a vaccine or antiviral drugs, control measures are necessary to understand the evolution of cases. Here, we report through spatial analysis the spatial pattern of the COVID-19 outbreak. The study site was the State of São Paulo, Brazil, where the first case of the disease was confirmed. We applied the Kernel Density to generate surfaces that indicate where there is higher density of cases and, consequently, greater risk of confirming new cases. The spatial pattern of COVID-19 pandemic could be observed in São Paulo State, in which its metropolitan region standed out with the greatest cases, being classified as a hotspot. In addition, the main highways and airports that connect the capital to the cities with the highest population density were classified as medium density areas by the Kernel Density method.It indicates a gradual expansion from the capital to the interior. Therefore, spatial analyses are fundamental to understand the spread of the virus and its association with other spatial data can be essential to guide control measures.

Abstract: Land surface temperature (LST) acquired from remote sensing observations is essential to monitor surface energy and water exchange processes at the land-atmosphere interface. Most LST retrieval methodologies are developed focusing on Northern hemisphere. Consequently, Southern hemisphere has a great need for investigating the performance of LST retrieval algorithms already consolidated in the literature. In this paper, we compared a Split-window (SW) and a Single-channel (SC) method to retrieve LST from Landsat 8 OLI/TIRS images in a dune field, Southern Brazil. To validate the results, the Atmospheric Correction Parameter Calculator (ACPC) tool and Radiative Transfer Equation (RTE) were used. Results demonstrated that both methodologies are in accordance with the RTE, despite they overestimated the LST. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated that the means are not statistically significant (0.05 level). The correlations between LST retrieved and RTE were strong, producing R² of 0.984 and 0.973 for the SW and SC, respectively, and RMSE values of 1.18 and 1.6. SW also exhibited the best values of MSD (±0.983) and Bias (0.773), thus reinforcing its superior performance. SW can be applied with an accuracy of 1.18 K in Southern Brazil, without needing complex modeling or specific radiosonde.

Resumo Dados de sensoriamento remoto são fundamentais para o monitoramento e planejamento florestal em escala local, regional e global. Considerando a hipótese de que o NDVI e o EVI podem ser usados por pelo menos uma década para monitorar o crescimento do Pinus elliottii no sul do Brasil, o objetivo deste estudo foi identificar o tempo de saturação desses índices de vegetação, após o plantio, em uma floresta comercial de Pinus elliottii, e indicar o índice mais adequado por meio do ajuste de funções teóricas. Para isso, 32 cenas Landsat de reflectância de superfície de nível superior foram selecionadas entre 1984 e 2015. Um conjunto de funções matemáticas teóricas polinomiais, gaussianas e logísticas foi aplicado para ajustar os dados experimentais. Também foram utilizados o coeficiente de determinação (R²) e o RMSE com 95% de probabilidade. Finalmente, foi testada a eficiência do EVI alterando o parâmetro L de sua equação. O modelo logístico foi o que melhor explicou os dados resultantes de NDVI e EVI temporalmente. O NDVI foi mais eficaz que o EVI para este monitoramento, levando mais tempo para saturar, identificando o padrão de crescimento da floresta até os 18 anos de idade. O EVI pode ter saturado após 14 anos e, o fator L, pode ser ajustado para próximo de zero para alcançar um maior coeficiente de determinação.

Abstract Remote sensing data are a key proxy to forest monitoring and management at local, regional and global scales. Considering the hypothesis that NDVI and EVI can be used at least during one decade to monitor Pinus elliottii in Southern Brazil, the objective of this study was to identify saturation time after planting of these vegetation indices in a Pinus elliottii plantation and the most suitable index by adjusting theoretical functions to each one of them. Based on Landsat Surface Reflectance Higher-Level Data Products, 32 scenes were selected between 1984 to 2015. A set of theoretical polynomial, gaussian and logistic mathematical functions were applied to fit the experimental data on vegetation indices. The determination coefficient (R²) and RMSE at 95% probability were also used. Finally, EVI efficiency was tested by changing the L parameter. The logistic model was the one that best explained the data resulting from NDVI and EVI over time. NDVI was more effective than EVI for this forest monitoring, identifying the forest growth pattern until its 18 years of age. EVI may have been saturated after 14 years and the L factor may be set to near to zero to achieve a higher coefficient of determination.
