ABSTRACT This study aimed to describe the characteristics of multisystemic inflammatory syndrome associated with COVID-19 (MIS-C) in the first three years of the pandemic in children in a pediatric hospital in Peru. We conducted an observational, descriptive study with data from 73 patients and described the clinical and laboratory characteristics, treatment and complications according to the wave of the pandemic and whether they had shock. The median age was 6 years, gastrointestinal and mucocutaneous manifestations were frequent in the three waves. Kawasaki disease-like phenotype was present in 34 (46.6%) patients and 21 (28.8%) patients developed shock. The most commonly used treatment was immunoglobulin (95.9%), followed by acetylsalicylic acid (94.5%) and corticosteroid (86.3%). Five (7%) patients had coronary aneurysm and 17 (23.3%) were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Patients with shock had greater laboratorial alteration and need for mechanical ventilation. In conclusion, MIS-C has decreased in the first three years of the pandemic, possibly due to COVID-19 vaccination in children.

RESUMEN El propósito del estudio fue describir las características del síndrome inflamatorio multisistémico asociado a COVID-19 (SIM-C) en los primeros tres años de pandemia en niños de un hospital pediátrico del Perú. Se realizó un estudio observacional, descriptivo con datos de 73 pacientes y se describieron las características clínicas, laboratoriales, tratamiento y complicaciones según la ola de la pandemia y si tuvieron shock. La mediana de edad fue 6 años, las manifestaciones gastrointestinales y mucocutáneas fueron frecuentes en las tres olas. El fenotipo similar a enfermedad de Kawasaki se presentó en 34 (46,6%) pacientes y 21 (28,8%) pacientes desarrollaron shock. El tratamiento más usado fue la inmunoglobulina (95,9%), ácido acetil salicílico (94,5%) y corticoide (86,3%). Cinco (7%) pacientes tuvieron aneurisma coronario y 17 (23,3%) ingresaron a la unidad de cuidados intensivos (UCI). Los pacientes con shock tuvieron mayor alteración laboratorial y necesidad de ventilación mecánica. En conclusión, el SIM-C ha disminuido en los primeros tres años de pandemia posiblemente por la vacunación de COVID-19 en niños.

Abstract The city of Parras de la Fuente, Coahuila is characterized by having criollo avocado trees with different morphological properties. However, very little information is available on their fruit nutritional and sensory characteristics. The objective of this work was to perform the bromatological, mineral, phytochemical and sensory characterization of 7 avocado landraces. The proximal analysis was carried out using standardized tests by the AOAC (2019), while the phytochemical content was determined using HPLC/MS equipment. Subsequently, the samples were evaluated using a hedonic test. The bromatological analysis showed significant differences in the total of the samples for the different response variables, which indicates the great genetic diversity among the sampled trees. The mineral that were determined in the highest concentration were Potassium, Magnesium and Calcium. Thirty-eight different phytochemical compounds were identified in the fruits, with a greater presence of flavones. While the sensory analysis showed a significant difference among the avocado landraces for the evaluated attributes. The flavor and texture attributes were the most important for the consumer preference. Different environmental factors (soil, climate, altitude, latitude, maturity) modify the nutritional composition of the avocado and its organoleptic characteristics. The results of this work may help propagation, fruit diversification and development of companies focused on this fruit in Parras de la Fuente, Coahuila.

Resumen La ciudad de Parras de la Fuente, Coahuila, se caracteriza por tener árboles de aguacate criollo con diferentes propiedades morfológicas. Sin embargo, es muy poca la información que se tiene sobre las características nutrimentales y sensoriales de los frutos de estos árboles. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue caracterizar bromatológica, mineral, fitoquímica y sensorial 7 aguacates criollos, obtenidos de diferentes árboles. El análisis proximal se realizó mediante pruebas estandarizadas por la AOAC (2019), mientras que el contenido de fitoquímicos se determinó en un equipo HPLC/MS. Posteriormente, las muestras se evaluaron mediante una prueba hedónica. El análisis bromatológico arrojó diferencias significativas en el total de las muestras para las diferentes variables de respuesta, lo que indica la gran diversidad genética entre los árboles muestreados. Los minerales que se determinaron en mayor concentración fueron Potasio, Magnesio y Calcio. Se identificaron 38 compuestos fitoquímicos diferentes en los frutos, con mayor presencia de flavonas, mientras que el análisis sensorial arrojó una diferencia significativa entre los criollos en las variables evaluadas. Los atributos de sabor y textura resultaron los más importantes para la preferencia del consumidor. Diferentes factores ambientales (suelo, clima, altitud, latitud, madurez) modifican la composición nutrimental del aguacate y sus características organolépticas. Los resultados de este trabajo pudieran ayudar a la propagación, diversificación frutícola y desarrollo de empresas enfocadas en este fruto en Parras de la Fuente, Coahuila.

RESUMEN Objetivo: Determinar las características clínicas y epidemiológicas de los pacientes con uveítis no infecciosas que acuden a un hospital universitario de Paraguay. Metodología: Se realizó un estudio observacional, descriptivo de corte transversal, retrospectivo. Se incluyeron casos consecutivos de pacientes que acudieron al Servicio de Oftalmología del Hospital de Clínicas de enero del 2020 a octubre del 2021 y que fueron diagnosticados con uveítis no infecciosa. Las variables estudiadas fueron sexo, edad, procedencia, motivo de consulta, clasificación anatómica, curso clínico, asociación sistémica y ocular y bilateralidad. Resultados: Se revisó los expedientes de 78 pacientes, el 66,7% fue de sexo femenino y 42 pacientes (53,8%) procedían del departamento Central. La localización anatómica anterior de la uveítis fue la más frecuente (53,9%), seguida en orden decreciente por la panuveítis, la posterior y la intermedia. Respecto a las uveítis anteriores, en 24 pacientes (57,1%) fueron unilaterales, en 40 (95,2%) no granulomatosas, 19 (45,2%) presentaron un curso clínico agudo, el motivo de consulta más frecuente fue “ojo rojo y doloroso” con 15 pacientes (35,7%), la asociación sistémica más frecuente fue HLA- B27+ en 16 pacientes (38,1%). En cuanto, a las panuveítis, 13 pacientes (50%) se asociaron con síndrome de Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada y de las posteriores 2 pacientes relacionados a Artritis reumatoidea. Conclusión: El patrón clínico y epidemiológico observado en este estudio es en su mayor parte similar al observado en la mayoría de las series encontradas en la literatura. Llaman la atención en este estudio que las asociaciones más frecuentes son diferentes de los reportados en la literatura: de la anterior, el HLA-B27+; de la posterior, la artritis reumatoidea; y que entre las panuveítis se observa un gran porcentaje de síndrome de Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada.

ABSTRACT Objective: To determine the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of patients with noninfectious uveitis at a university hospital in Paraguay. Methodology: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional, retrospective study was performed. Consecutive patients who attended the Ophthalmology Service of the Hospital de Clínicas from January 2020 to October 2021 and who were diagnosed with non-infectious uveitis were included. The variables studied were sex, age, origin, reason for consultation, anatomical classification, clinical course, systemic and ocular associations, and bilaterality. Results: A total of 78 medical records of patients meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria were analyzed. Of the patients, 66.7% were female and 42 (53.8%) were from the Central Department. The anterior anatomical location of uveitis was the most frequent (53.9%), followed in decreasing order by panuveitis, posterior uveitis, and intermediate uveitis. Regarding anterior uveitis, 24 patients (57.1%) had unilateral uveitis, 40 (95.2%) were non-granulomatous, 19 (45.2%) presented an acute clinical course, the most frequent reason for consultation was "red and painful eye" with 15 patients (35.7%), the most frequent systemic association was HLA- B27+ in 16 patients (38.1%). As for panuveitis, 13 patients (50%) were associated with Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome, and of the latter, two patients were related to rheumatoid arthritis. Conclusion: The clinical and epidemiological patterns observed in this study were largely consistent with those reported in the literature. Notably, the most frequent associations differed from those reported in the literature: HLA-B27+ for anterior uveitis, rheumatoid arthritis for posterior uveitis, and a significant percentage of Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome among panuveitis cases.

abstract Introduction: Medical education has been changing, and the evaluation strategies that make it possible to address not only theoretical knowledge but also clinical skills. In Mental Health, these skills play a central role. The Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is one of the evaluations that could assess clinical skills. This article describes the implementation and performance for the evaluation of undergraduate students since the OSCE's introduction in 2015. Methods: An explanation of the implementation is made, and a description of the OSCEs carried out to undergraduate medical students in the second semester of mental health, using the databases of the final practical examinations during those years. The perception of mental health teachers is also described. Results: The mental health OSCE implemented in 2015-2, is developed in the Simulated Hospital of the University and has five stations (interview, mental examination, diagnosis, treatment and information to the family and ethics). Between 2016-2 and 2019-2, 486 students performed OSCE with an average score of 3.85 (scale 0-5). It was observed that the grade obtained when evaluating anxiety disorders was below average, that of affective disorders above average, while that of psychotic disorders was within the average. The professors highlight the versatility, the comprehensive objective evaluation of the practical and theoretical aspects, and the possibility of comparison between the different groups. Conclusions: The OSCE is an examination that provides the possibility to evaluate the competences in psychiatry of medical students and allows the identification of the aspects to be improved in the teaching learning process.

resumen Introducción: La formación médica ha venido transformándose, así como las estrategias de evaluación, lo que permite abordar, además de los conocimientos, las habilidades clínicas. En salud mental estas habilidades desempeñan un rol central. El Examen Clínico Objetivo Estructurado (ECOE) es una de las evaluaciones que tiene este potencial. El objetivo del presente artículo es describir la implementación y el desempeño que han tenido los estudiantes de pregrado desde la introducción de este en el año 2015. Métodos: Se recuenta la implementación y se describen los ECOE realizados a estudiantes de pregrado de Medicina que cursan el segundo semestre de Salud Mental tomando las bases de datos de los exámenes prácticos finales. Además se describe la percepción de los docentes del área. Resultados: El ECOE de salud mental se implementó en 2015-2, se desarrolla en el Hospital Simulado de la Universidad y cuenta con 5 estaciones (entrevista, examen mental, diagnóstico, tratamiento e información a la familia y ética). Entre 2016-2 y 2019-2, 486 estudiantes pasaron el ECOE con una nota promedio de 3,85 (baremo de 0 a 5). Se observó que la nota obtenida al evaluarse trastornos de ansiedad estuvo por debajo del promedio; la de trastornos afectivos, por encima del promedio y la de trastornos psicóticos, dentro del promedio. Los docentes resaltan la versatilidad, la mirada objetiva integral de los aspectos prácticos y teóricos y la posibilidad de comparación entre los diferentes grupos. Conclusiones: El ECOE brinda la posibilidad de evaluar las competencias en acción de los estudiantes de Medicina y permite la identificación de qué aspectos mejorar en el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje.

RESUMEN En la investigación clínica es crucial realizar una selección adecuada del diseño de investigación. Cada tipo de diseño cumple con diferentes objetivos, desde examinar prevalencias mediante diseños transversales hasta analizar exposiciones a lo largo del tiempo en estudios de cohorte. Los diseños de investigación pueden ser clasificados en primarios, como los ensayos clínicos aleatorizados, o secundarios, como las revisiones. También se dividen en experimentales, que evalúan intervenciones, y observacionales que simplemente observan sin intervenir. Al elegir el diseño más apropiado, se deben tener en cuenta la pregunta de investigación, los recursos disponibles y las consideraciones éticas. Una elección acertada garantiza la validez y aplicabilidad de los resultados, lo cual resulta beneficioso tanto para la medicina como para los pacientes.

ABSTRACT In clinical research, it is crucial to make an appropriate selection of the research design. Each type of design meets different objectives, from examining prevalences through cross-sectional designs to analyzing exposures over time in cohort studies. Research designs can be classified as primary, such as randomized clinical trials, or secondary, such as reviews. They are also divided into experimental, which evaluate interventions, and observational, which simply observe without intervening. When choosing the most appropriate design, the research question, available resources, and ethical considerations should be taken into account. A correct choice guarantees the validity and applicability of the results, which is beneficial for both medicine and patients.

ABSTRACT Introduction: In Cuba, a country with a low incidence of tuberculosis (TB), there is no information about of the dynamics of transmission of the disease for two decades. Objective: Determine the genetic patterns and sublineages of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) isolates circulating in 2009 and their relationship with the epidemiological data of the patients. Methods: A retrospective descriptive study was carried out in Cuba with 178 MTBC isolates. Spoligotyping and mycobacterial interspersed repetitive-unit-variable-number tandem-repeat (MIRU-VNTR) typing with 24loci were performed. For statistical analysis, non-parametric methods, analysis of variance and homogeneity test, were used. Results: Spoligotyping produced 39 spoligotypes. The S, Beijing, LAM and Haarlem sublineages prevailed. The clustering rate was 75.84% and the Hunter-Gaston discriminatory index (HGDI): 0.8734. MIRU-VNTR typing with 24-loci defined 154 genetic patterns: six grouped 30 isolates and 148 showed unique patterns. The clustering rate was 14.60% and the HGDI: 0.9926. There was a predominance of sublineages by region: S, Beijing and LAM in the West, Center and East, respectively. Conclusions: The dynamics of TB transmission in Cuba in 2009 is reported, inferring that this occurs in a limited manner and belonging to risk groups does not favor transmission. It serves to evaluate a megaproject of the Global Fund to reduce the transmission of TB in this country. The population genetic structure of MTBC resembles that of an Ibero-American country, with the exception of the high frequency of the Beijing and S sublineages.

RESUMEN Introducción: En Cuba, país con baja incidencia de tuberculosis (TB), no existe información sobre la dinámica de transmisión de la enfermedad desde hace dos décadas. Objetivo: Determinar los patrones genéticos y sublinajes de los aislados del complejo Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTBC) circulantes en el año 2009 y su relación con los datos clínico-epidemiológicos de los pacientes. Métodos: Se realizó un estudio descriptivo retrospectivo en Cuba con 178 aislamientos de MTBC. Se realizó el espoligotipaje y el tipaje con unidades repetitivas intercaladas de micobacterias con repetición en tándem de número variable (MIRU-VNTR) con 24loci. Para el análisis estadístico, se utilizaron métodos no paramétricos, análisis de varianza y prueba de homogeneidad. Resultados: El espoligotipaje produjo 39 espoligotipos, prevaleciendo los sublinajes S, Beijing, LAM y Haarlem. El rango de agrupamiento fue del 75,84 % y el índice discriminatorio de Hunter-Gaston (HGDI): 0,8734. El tipaje por MIRU-VNTR con 24loci definió 154 patrones genéticos: seis agruparon 30 aislados y 148 mostraron patrones únicos. El rango de agrupamiento fue del 14,60 % y el HGDI: 0,9926. Hubo predominio de los sublinajes por región: S, Beijing y LAM en Occidente, Centro y Este, respectivamente. Conclusiones: Se reporta la dinámica de transmisión de la TB en Cuba en el año 2009, infiriéndose que esta ocurre de manera limitada y la pertenencia a grupos de riesgo no favorece la transmisión. Sirve para evaluar un megaproyecto del Fondo Mundial para reducir la transmisión de la TB en este país. La estructura genética poblacional de MTBC se asemeja a la de un país iberoamericano, con la excepción de la alta frecuencia de los sublinajes Beijing y S.

ABSTRACT Introduction: The origin of congenital defects is influenced by environmental factors, such as folic acid intake deficit, and genetic factors, such as gene polymorphisms. Objectives: To find the relation between the maternal C677T polymorphism of the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase gene and the appearance of folate-sensitive congenital defects in the offspring. Methods: A population-based observational case-control analytical study was performed. Ninety mothers with offsprings affected by five types of folate-sensitive congenital defects between 2013 and 2018 in Villa Clara province were included. They underwent genotyping of the C677T polymorphism of the methylenetetra gene. Results: The frequency of the homozygous TT genotype was 0.14 and 0.06 in the mothers of affected cases and those of the control group, respectively. An association between maternal polymorphism polymorphism and congenital defects in the offspring, in the codominance model and the recessive model. Conclusions: The higher frequency of the TT homozygous genotype, in mothers with affected offspring, is related to the decrease described for methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase enzyme activity in this genotype.

RESUMEN Introducción: En el origen de los defectos congénitos influyen factores ambientales, como el déficit de consumo de ácido fólico, y factores genéticos, como los polimorfismos génicos. Objetivos: Relacionar el polimorfismo materno C677T del gen metilenetetrahodrofolato reductasa y la aparición de defectos congénitos folato-sensibles en la descendencia. Métodos: Se realizó un estudio observacional analítico de casos y controles poblacionales. Se incluyeron 90 madres con descendencia afectada por cinco tipos de defectos congénitos folato-sensibles entre 2013 y 2018 en la provincia de Villa Clara. Se les realizó la genotificación del polimorfismo C677T del gen metilenetetrahodrofolato reductasa. Resultados: La frecuencia del genotipo homocigótico TT resultó de 0,14 y 0,06 en las madres de casos afectados y las del grupo control, respectivamente. Se identificó una asociación entre el polimorfismo materno y los defectos congénitos en la descendencia, en el modelo de codominancia y el modelo recesivo. Conclusiones: La mayor frecuencia del genotipo homocigótico TT, en las madres con descendencia afectada, se relaciona con la disminución descrita para la actividad enzimática de la metilenetetrahodrofolato reductasa en este genotipo.

Resumen: En México existen diferentes genotipos criollos de aguacate con gran valor genético, cultural y nutricional. En Parras, Coahuila el aguacate criollo Persea americana Mill es famoso por su sabor y rusticidad. Estos árboles podrían servir como fuente de germoplasma, sin embargo, no existen estudios científicos sobre su morfología y diversidad genética que establezcan su valor genético. En este estudio se muestrearon trece árboles de aguacate criollo. Se evaluaron características morfométricas de frutas y del árbol. Asimismo, se determinó la diversidad genética utilizando como marcadores moleculares, Inter Secuencias Simples Repetidas (ISSR). Los árboles mostraron variaciones en el tamaño, forma del árbol, circunferencia, patrón de ramificación y forma de la hoja. También las frutas presentaron diferencias morfológicas en tamaño, forma y semilla. El análisis de componentes principales indicó una fuerte asociación entre el tamaño de la semilla con la cavidad del fruto. Por otro lado, la población de árboles de aguacates criollo presentó una diversidad genética de 0.27, y el 78 % de los loci analizados presentaron polimorfismos. Además, se analizó la estructura de la población identificando dos subpoblaciones. En conclusión, los árboles de aguacate criollo de Parras, Coahuila son buenos candidatos como fuente de germoplasma debido a su alto valor genético.

Abstract In Mexico, there are different creole avocado genotypes with great genetic, cultural, and nutritional value. In Parras, Coahuila, the Persea americana Mill creole avocado is famous for its flavor and rusticity. These trees could serve as a source of germplasm, however, there are no scientific studies on their morphology and genetic diversity that establish their genetic value. In this study, thirteen creole avocado trees were sampled. Morphometric characteristics of fruits and the trees were evaluated. Likewise, genetic diversity was determined using Inter Simple Sequence Repeats (ISSR) as molecular markers. Trees showed variations in size, tree shape, girth, branching pattern, and leaf shape. Fruits also showed morphological differences in size, shape, and seed. Principal component analysis showed a strong association between seed size and fruit cavity. On the other hand, the population of creole avocado trees presented a genetic diversity of 0.27 and 78 % of the loci analyzed presented polymorphisms. In addition, the structure of the population was analyzed identifying two subpopulations of trees. In conclusion, creole avocado trees from Parras, Coahuila are good candidates as a source of germplasm due to their high genetic value.

Abstract Objective: To identify the relationship between Work Stress and Work Well-being in a sample of health personnel from District 18D04 of Tungurahua in the context of Covid-19. Methodology: Descriptive, quantitative, correlational and cross-sectional study using the Labor Stress scales of the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the General Labor Wellbeing Questionnaire. Participants: 334 health professionals, classified between men (29.3%) and women (70.7%), between 23 and 63 years old (M= 34.7 years old) who carry out their work activities in District 18D04 of the province of Tungurahua. Results: The levels of Work Stress are low, with a presence of 9.4% of risk cases. Occupational Well-being is moderate-high and with 5.7% of risk cases. Work Stress is moderately and positively related to the Side Effects factor (somatization, exhaustion and alienation) of Work Well-being, but not with Psychosocial Well-being. Conclusions: Work Stress covaries with the collateral effects of Work Well-being in the participating sample.

Resumen Objetivo: identificar la relación entre el estrés y el bienestar laborales en una muestra de personal de salud del Distrito 18D04 de Tungurahua en el contexto del Covid-19. Metodología: Estudio descriptivo, cuantitativo, correlacional y de corte transversal por medio de las escalas de estrés laboral de la Organización Internacional del Trabajo (OIT) y el Cuestionario de bienestar laboral General. Participantes: 334 profesionales de la salud, clasificados entre hombres (29.3%) y mujeres (70,7%), entre 23 a 63 años (M= 34,7 años) que realizan sus actividades laborales en el Distrito 18D04 de la provincia de Tungurahua. Resultados: Los niveles de estrés laboral son bajos, con una presencia del 9,4% de casos de riesgo. el bienestar laboral es moderado-alto y con un 5,7% de casos de riesgo. El estrés laboral se relaciona de forma moderada y positiva con el factor de Efectos Colaterales (somatización, desgaste y alienación) del bienestar laboral, pero no con el bienestar psicosocial. Conclusiones: el estrés laboral covaría con los efectos colaterales del bienestar laboral en la muestra participante.

ABSTRACT A good part of the study programs of the Degree in theater and/or acting are designed to train stage creators who, during their professional stage, will dedicate themselves to creating fictions built from dramatic texts of an Aristotelian nature. In these models, other ways of articulating stage creation are excluded. For this reason, the present work tries to give greater prominence to Brechtian ideas; with the purpose that the students assume their creation from a greater aesthetic, ethical and political conscience. The intention will be to promote tools so that students; as well as scenic creators and creators articulate artistic practices that denounce, criticize and/or make violence visible. It is pertinent that teachers assume other pedagogies according to the needs of our time, because we cannot continue replicating models of creation that have been surpassed by the march of history.

RESUMEN Buena parte de los programas de estudio de las licenciatura en teatro o actuación están diseñados para formar creadores escénicos que durante su etapa profesional se dedicarán a crear ficciones construidas a partir de textos dramáticos de corte aristotélico. En dichos modelos quedan excluidas otras maneras de articular la creación escénica. Por tal motivo el presente trabajo intenta otorgar mayor protagonismo a las ideas brechtianas, con la finalidad de que el alumnado asuma su creación desde una mayor conciencia estética, ética y política. La intención será impulsar herramientas para que las y los estudiantes, así como creadores y creadoras escénicas, articulen prácticas artísticas que denuncien, critiquen o visibilicen la violencia. Es pertinente que la docencia asuma otras pedagogías acordes a las necesidades de nuestro tiempo, debido a que no podemos seguir replicando modelos de creación que han sido superados por la marcha de la Historia.

Resumen Introducción: La obesidad mórbida se asocia a alteraciones de la capacidad de caminar, sin embargo se desconoce cómo es el comportamiento de la prueba de caminata de 6 minutos en sujetos con incrementos del índice de masa corporal (IMC). Objetivo: Describir el comportamiento de la prueba de caminata de 6 minutos en sujetos con IMC normal hasta la obesidad mórbida. Métodos: Mediante un diseño transversal analítico se estudiaron sujetos de ambos sexos de 18 a 60 años con IMC: normal (18.5-24.9 kg/m2), sobrepeso (25-29.9 kg/m2), obesidad (30-39.9 kg/m2), obesidad mórbida (> 40 kg/m2). Se les realizó prueba de caminata de 6 minutos, se acotaron variables demográficas y antecedentes personales patológicos. Se analizaron las categorías de IMC con ANOVA de una vía y ajuste de Bonferroni y los sexos con prueba t, ambos para grupos independientes y correlaciones de Pearson para las diversas variables. Una p < 0.05 fue considerada estadísticamente significativa. Resultados: Se estudiaron 480 sujetos de ambos sexos en cuatro grupos. Edad: hombres 43 ± 11 y mujeres 45 ± 10 años. Porcentaje diabetes mellitus (6.7%), hipertensión arterial (18.3%). Metros caminados hombres vs. mujeres por IMC (normal: 483 ± 56 vs. 449 ± 61; sobrepeso: 471 ± 55 vs. 441 ± 44; obesidad: 455 ± 70 vs. 421 ± 47; obesidad mórbida: 443 ± 49 vs. 403 ± 54; p < 0.05). Correlación IMC-metros caminados r: –0.446 (p < 0.0001). Conclusiones: Los metros caminados en la prueba de caminata de 6 minutos disminuyeron conforme incrementó el IMC. El sexo masculino caminó más metros en todas las categorías.

Abstract Introduction: Morbid obesity is associated with alterations in the ability to walk, however, the behavior of the 6-minute walk test in subjects with increases in body mass index is unknown. Objective: To describe the behavior of the 6-minute walk test in subjects with normal body mass index to morbid obesity. Methods: Through an analytical cross-sectional design, subjects of both genders from 18 to 60 years old with body mass index were studied: Normal (BMI: 18.5-24.9); overweight (BMI: 25-29.9); obesity (BMI: 30-39.9); morbid obesity (BMI: > 40) kg/m2. A 6-minute walk test was performed, demographic variables and pathological personal history were delimited. BMI categories were analyzed with one-way ANOVA and Bonferroni adjustment, and gender with t-test, both for independent groups, and Pearson's correlations for the various variables. Results: 480 subjects of both genders were studied in four groups. Age: men 43 ± 11 and women 45 ± 10 years old. Percentage diabetes mellitus (6.7%), arterial hypertension (18.3%). Meters walked men vs. women by body mass index (normal: 483 ± 56 vs. 449 ± 61; overweight: 471 ± 55 vs. 441 ± 44; obesity: 455 ± 70 vs. 421 ± 47; morbid obesity: 443 ± 49 vs. 403 ± 54, p < 0.05). Correlation body mass index-meters walked: r: -0.446 (p < 0.0001). Conclusions: Meters walked in the 6-minute walk test decreased as body mass index increased. The male gender walked more meters in all categories.
