RESUMO A malformação de Chiari tipo I é uma condição geralmente congênita de herniação das tonsilas cerebelares abaixo do forame magno, que pode levar à compressão das estruturas próximas da fossa craniana posterior ou à obstrução do fluxo do líquido cefalorraquidiano ventril. O tipo I, apesar de raro, é o mais comumente encontrado na população. Este estudo teve como objetivo relatar os achados da videoendoscopia da deglutição, avaliação fonoaudiológica, nível de ingestão oral, risco nutricional e o planejamento terapêutico em três casos de malformação de Chiari tipo I na fase adulta. Foram coletados dados com relação à avaliação fonoaudiológica de mobilidade e força de língua, Tempo Máximo de Fonação, eficiência da tosse e o Índice de Eichner. Foram analisados o nível de ingestão oral e os sinais faríngeos de disfagia em quatro consistências alimentares, de acordo com a classificação da International Dysphagia Diet Standartisation Initiative), por meio da videoendoscopia da deglutição. Para análise e classificação dos resíduos faríngeos, foi utilizado o Yale Pharyngeal Residue Severity Rating Scale, enquanto que, para rastrear o risco nutricional, foi utilizado o Malnutrition Screening Tool. ABSTRACT Type I Chiari malformation (MCI) is a generally congenital condition of herniation of the cerebellar tonsils below the foramen magnum, which can lead to compression of structures close to the posterior cranial fossa or obstruction of the flow of ventral cerebrospinal fluid. Type I, although rare, is the most commonly found in the population. This study aimed to report the findings of video endoscopy of swallowing, speech assessment, level of oral intake, nutritional risk and therapeutic planning in three cases of Type I Chiari malformation. Data were collected regarding the assessment of mobility and strength of tongue, Maximum Phonation Time (MPT), cough efficiency and the Eichner Index. The level of oral intake and pharyngeal signs of dysphagia were analyzed in four food consistencies, according to the International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative (IDDSI) classification, using swallowing video endoscopy. For analysis and classification of pharyngeal residues, the Yale Pharyngeal Residue Severity Rating Scale (YPRSRS) was used, while the Malnutrition Screening Tool (MST) was used to track nutritional risk. Reduced tongue mobility and strength and reduced MPT were observed, while pharyngeal signs varied between cases, with the presence of incomplete glottic closure, posterior oral escape, multiple swallows, pharyngeal residues and laryngeal penetration. RESUMO Objetivo Comparar o estado oral, a função de deglutição por meio da avaliação instrumental, fonoaudiológica e do risco nutricional entre indivíduos disfágicos com e sem doença de Parkinson. Método Trata-se de um estudo transversal e retrospectivo com base na coleta de dados dos prontuários. Foram incluídos 54 idosos disfágicos divididos em dois grupos, de acordo com a presença do diagnóstico de doença de Parkinson. RESUMO Objetivo Identificar a presença de sintomas vocais e dor musculoesquelética em não profissionais da voz, verificar se há relação entre essas variáveis e comparar o desempenho entre mulheres e homens. Métodos Estudo transversal observacional. Participaram 59 indivíduos não profissionais da voz. Os dados foram coletados no meio on-line e aplicou-se questionário de caracterização e os seguintes protocolos de autoavaliação: Escala de Sintomas Vocais e Questionário de Investigação da Dor Musculoesquelética. Foi realizada análise estatística descritiva. A estatística inferencial comparou as variáveis entre mulheres e homens e realizou-se análise de correlação entre as variáveis de ambos os protocolos de autoavaliação por meio do teste de Spearman. Resultados Para todo o grupo estudado, observaram-se valores médios do escore total da Escala de Sintomas Vocais acima do ponto de corte do questionário, indicando risco para disfonia. Houve presença de dor nas regiões avaliadas, porém, em frequência baixa e intensidade leve. Verificou-se correlação positiva entre a frequência de dor nas regiões de pescoço, temporal, abaixo do queixo e laringe/garganta e a Escala de Sintomas Vocais. Mulheres apresentaram maior frequência de dor nos ombros, na região temporal e na laringe, quando comparadas aos homens. Conclusão A população de não profissionais da voz deste estudo apresentou escores elevados de sintomas de alteração vocal. A dor musculoesquelética foi pouco presente, com intensidade leve, porém, mais frequente em mulheres nas regiões próximas à laringe. ABSTRACT Purpose To identify the presence of vocal symptoms and musculoskeletal pain in non-professional voice users, to verify whether there is a relationship between such variables, and to compare women and men. Methods Crosssectional, observational study. Fifty-nine non-professional voice users (NPVU) were included. The data were collected on-line. A characterization questionnaire and self-assessment protocols were applied: Voice Symptoms Scale (VoiSS) and Musculoskeletal Pain Investigation Questionnaire (MPI). A descriptive statistical analysis was performed. The inferential statistics compared the variables between women and men and a correlation analysis was carried out between the VoiSS and MPI using the Spearman correlation test. Results For the entire studied group , mean values of the total VoiSS score were observed above the cut-off point, indicating risk for dysphonia. There was musculoskeletal pain in the regions assessed, but at low frequency and mild intensity. Women had a higher frequency of pain in the shoulders, temporal region and larynx, when compared to men. There was a positive correlation between the pain frequency in the regions: neck, temporal region, below the chin and larynx/throat in all or some of MPI scores. Conclusion The NPVU population in this study presented with high scores for signs and symptoms of voice disorders. Musculoskeletal pain was rarely present, with mild intensity, but more frequent in women in regions close to the larynx. Resumo Fundamento As complicações cardiovasculares da COVID-19 são aspectos importantes da patogênese e do prognóstico da doença. Evidências do papel prognóstico da troponina e da lesão miocárdica em pacientes hospitalizados com COVID-19 na América Latina são ainda escassos. Objetivos Avaliar a lesão miocárdica como preditor independente de mortalidade hospitalar e suporte ventilatório mecânico em pacientes hospitalizados, do registro brasileiro de COVID-19. Métodos Este estudo coorte é um subestudo do registro brasileiro de COVID-19, conduzido em 31 hospitais brasileiros de 17 cidades, de março a setembro de 2020. Os desfechos primários incluíram mortalidade hospitalar e suporte ventilatório mecânico invasivo. Os modelos para os desfechos primários foram estimados por regressão de Poisson com variância robusta, com significância estatística de p<0,05. Resultados Dos 2925 pacientes [idade mediana de 60 anos (48-71), 57,1%], 27,3% apresentaram lesão miocárdica. A proporção de pacientes com comorbidades foi maior nos pacientes com lesão miocárdica [mediana 2 (1-2) vs. 1 (0-20)]. Os pacientes com lesão miocárdica apresentaram maiores valores medianos de peptídeo natriurético cerebral, lactato desidrogenase, creatina fosfoquinase, N-terminal do pró-peptídeo natriurético tipo B e proteína C reativa em comparação a pacientes sem lesão miocárdica. Como fatores independentes, proteína C reativa e contagem de plaquetas foram relacionados com o risco de morte, e neutrófilos e contagem de plaquetas foram relacionados ao risco de suporte ventilatório mecânico invasivo. Os pacientes com níveis elevados de troponina apresentaram um maior risco de morte (RR 2,03, IC95% 1,60-2,58) e suporte ventilatório mecânico (RR 1,87;IC95% 1,57-2,23), em comparação àqueles com níveis de troponina normais. Abstract Background Cardiovascular complications of COVID-19 are important aspects of the disease’s pathogenesis and prognosis. Evidence on the prognostic role of troponin and myocardial injury in Latin American hospitalized COVID-19 patients is still scarce. Objectives To evaluate myocardial injury as independent predictor of in-hospital mortality and invasive mechanical ventilation support in hospitalized patients, from the Brazilian COVID-19 Registry. Methods This cohort study is a substudy of the Brazilian COVID-19 Registry, conducted in 31 Brazilian hospitals of 17 cities, March-September 2020. Primary outcomes included in-hospital mortality and invasive mechanical ventilation support. Models for the primary outcomes were estimated by Poisson regression with robust variance, with statistical significance of p<0.05. Results Of 2,925 patients (median age of 60 years [48-71], 57.1% men), 27.3% presented myocardial injury. The proportion of patients with comorbidities was higher among patients with cardiac injury (median 2 [1-2] vs. 1 [0-2]). Patients with myocardial injury had higher median levels of brain natriuretic peptide, lactate dehydrogenase, creatine phosphokinase, N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide, and C-reactive protein than patients without myocardial injury. As independent predictors, C-reactive protein and platelet counts were related to the risk of death, and neutrophils and platelet counts were related to the risk of invasive mechanical ventilation support. Patients with high troponin levels presented a higher risk of death (RR 2.03, 95% CI 1.60-2.58) and invasive mechanical ventilation support (RR 1.87, 95% CI 1.57-2.23), when compared to those with normal troponin levels. Conclusion Cardiac injury was an independent predictor of in-hospital mortality and the need for invasive mechanical ventilation support in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. RESUMO O objetivo deste relato de caso foi descrever os resultados da terapia fonoaudiológica intensiva, em um caso de presbifonia, e apresentar uma proposta de tratamento vocal para idosos, demonstrando seus resultados na qualidade vocal, qualidade de vida e imagem laríngea de um paciente com presbifonia. O programa Terapia Vocal para Idosos (TVI) é constituído por uma sequência de exercícios, que visam ao aumento da loudness, coordenação pneumofonoarticulatória, melhora na vibração de mucosa e equilíbrio de ressonância, além da variação e controle da frequência. O modelo terapêutico em questão foi aplicado em um indivíduo do gênero feminino, com 87 anos de idade e queixas de voz fraca e dificuldade em ser ouvido. As terapias ocorreram de maneira intensiva em 16 sessões com 30 minutos de duração, quatro vezes por semana e com realização de exercícios em casa. A experiência de aplicação do programa em formato intensivo mostrou efeitos positivos na qualidade vocal, com diminuição do desvio global da voz, soprosidade na emissão sustentada e rugosidade na emissão sustentada e fala. A melhora no desempenho vocal refletiu em aumento nos valores dos domínios físico e global do protocolo de qualidade de vida relacionada à voz. Houve, também, melhora no fechamento glótico. O tratamento vocal com o método TVI intensivo demonstra efeitos positivos no tratamento da presbifonia e tem o potencial de promover benefícios na qualidade vocal, na qualidade de vida relacionada à voz e nos aspectos laríngeos dos idosos.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to describe the results of intensive voice therapy in a presbyphonia case and to propose a voice treatment program for the elderly by demonstrating vocal quality, quality of life and laryngeal image results. The Voice Therapy for the Elderly (VTE) program consisted of a sequence of exercises that aimed at increasing intensity, pneumo-articulatory coordination, mucosal vibration and resonance balance, and increasing frequency variation and control. The therapeutic model in question was applied to an 87-year-old female subject with complaints of a weak voice and difficulty to be heard by others. This therapy program was applied with an intensive approach over 16 sessions, 30 minutes each session, four times a week, with assigned homework. The intensive voice therapy format demonstrated positive effects on vocal quality with an overall reduction in voice deviation, breathiness, and roughness on sustained phonation and speech. Vocal performance improvement showed a subsequent increase in the physical and general aspects of voice-related quality of life. There was also improvement in glottic closure. Voice treatment via the VTE method, with an intensive approach revealed to be positive in the treatment of presbyphonia and can potentially promote benefits for the elderly in terms of voice quality, voice-related quality of life, and laryngeal changes.

Abstract Pluripotent stem cells have been studied as source of cells for regenerative medicine and acquire or genetic diseases, as an innovative therapy. Most tissues have stem cells populations, however in few quantities or impossible to be used during adult life, which lead to scientists look for new sources. Thus, this study aimed to analyze the presence of pluripotent cells in the uterus and placenta, following up non-pregnant, pregnant (begin, middle, and final), and postpartum periods in dogs. The uteri were obtained from social castration programs for population control in Pirassununga, Sao Paulo, Brazil. It was collected 20 uteri at different stages. The samples were fixed and processed for immunohistochemical analysis of NANOG, OCT4 and SOX2 expression, knowing as pluripotent stem cells makers. Our results showed positive expression for NANOG, OCT4 and SOX2 in all stages of gestation and nonpregnant uterus; however, we highlight some quantitative different between stages. OCT4 showed more expression in non-pregnant uterus than NANOG and SOX2, and its expression increased in pregnant uterus. In pregnant uterus there was more expression of NANOG than OCT4 and SOX2. Interesting, no difference was found between these markers in the other periods. In conclusion, it was possible to identify pluripotent stem cells in all periods in dog placenta and uterus, however during the early stage of pregnancy we observed more pluripotent stem cells than in all the others periods confirming the high plasticity and regeneration capacity of the uterine tissue.

Abstract Objective: To analyze data related to surgical treatment in patients with congenital heart defects (CHD) and Down syndrome (DS) based on information from International Quality Improvement Collaborative Database for Congenital Heart Disease (IQIC). Methods: Between July 1, 2010 and December 31, 2017, 139 patients with CHD and DS underwent surgery at Hospital de Base and Hospital da Criança e Maternidade de São José do Rio Preto (FUNFARME)/Faculdade de Medicina de São José do Rio Preto - SP (FAMERP). A quantitative, observational and cross-sectional study was performed in which the pre, intra and postoperative data were analyzed in an IQIC database. The data included gender, age, prematurity, weight, preoperative procedures, diagnosis, associated cardiac and non-cardiac anomalies, Risk Adjustment for Congenital Heart Surgery (RACHS-1), type of surgery, cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), perfusion time, aortic clamping time and CPB temperature, bacterial sepsis, surgical site infection and other infections, length of stay in intensive care unit (ICU), length of hospital stay and in-hospital mortality. Results: The most prevalent procedures were complete atrioventricular septal defect repair (58 - 39.45%), followed by closure of ventricular septal defect (36 - 24.49%). The RACHS-1 categories 1, 2, 3 and 4 were distributed as 22 (15%); 49 (33.3%); 72 (49%) and 4 (2.7%), respectively. There were no procedures classified as categories 5 or 6. Bacterial sepsis occurred in 10.2% of cases, surgical site infection in 6.1%, other infections in 14.3%. The median length of ICU stay was 5 days and the median length of hospital stay was 11 days. In-hospital mortality was 6.8%. Conclusion: Surgical treatment in patients with CHD and DS usually does not require highly complex surgical procedures, but are affected by infectious complications, resulting in a longer ICU and hospital length of stay with considerable mortality.

PURPOSE: To describe a new technique for isolation of a mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) population from the olfactory mucosa in rabbits. METHODS: Olfactory stem cells (OSCs) were retrieved from under the cribriform plate of the Ethmoid bone. Several assays were accomplished to characterize the cell population and attest its viability in vitro. The cells were submitted to flow cytometry with the antibodies CD34, CD45, CD73, CD79, CD90 and CD105 and also they were induced to differentiate in three lineages. Functional evaluation involved analysis of in vitro growth behavior, colony forming unit like fibroblasts (CFU-f) and cryopreservation response. Further transduction with Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) was also performed. RESULTS: The OSCs showed mesenchymal features, as positive response to CD34, CD73 and CD90 antibodies and plasticity. Additionally, these cells have high proliferated rate, and they could be cultured through many passages and kept the ability to proliferate and differentiate after cryopreservation. The positive response to the transduction signalizes the possibility of cellular tracking in vivo. This is a desirable feature in case those cells are used for pre-clinical trials. CONCLUSION: The cells harvested were mesenchymal stem cells and the technique described is therefore efficient for rabbit olfactory stem cells isolation.

As disfonias neurológicas são distúrbios vocais que acompanham lesões ou alterações no sistema nervoso. O acidente vascular encefálico (AVE) é a segunda causa de morte no mundo e os danos cerebrais causados podem afetar a comunicação do indivíduo em diversos aspectos. As alterações de voz características dessas lesões são pouco descritas quanto à localização e extensão do acometimento cerebral. O objetivo deste estudo foi descrever as características fonatórias de dez idosos acometidos por AVE, de acordo com a topografia da lesão observada ao exame de neuroimagem. Todos os participantes tiveram amostras de voz gravadas e foi realizada avaliação perceptivo-auditiva da voz e da diadococinesia laríngea. Os exames de neuroimagem foram classificados quanto à localização, extensão, lateralidade e território de vascularização da lesão cerebral. Os resultados mostram uma população de AVEs extensos de artéria cerebral média e AVEs de localização variada no cérebro. As vozes dos sujeitos mostraram predominantemente presença de rugosidade, soprosidade, instabilidade e pastosidade, além de alteração no controle motor laríngeo, demonstrado pela velocidade reduzida e instabilidade na repetição de vogais. Essas características ocorreram tanto no grupo de pacientes com AVE extenso de lesão da artéria cerebral média como em pacientes com AVEs menores de localização variada no cérebro. Os achados sugerem que as manifestações vocais dos casos estudados não dependem apenas da topografia da lesão. Daí a importância de considerar as individualidades de cada paciente no momento da avaliação clínica.

Neurological dysphonias are vocal disorders followed by injuries or changes in the nervous system. Stroke is the second leading cause of death worldwide and the brain damage caused by it can affect communication in several aspects. The changes in the vocal features caused by these lesions are poorly described regarding the location and extent of cerebral involvement. The aim of this study was to describe vocal parameters of ten elderly patients affected by stroke according to the topography of the lesion at neuroimaging. We recorded from them: perceptual and auditory evaluation of voice and laryngeal diadochokinesis. Neuroimaging studies were classified according to location, extent, laterality territory of brain injury. The results show a population of extensive middle cerebral artery strokes and strokes with varied location in the brain. The subjects' voices showed predominantly the presence of roughness, breathiness, richeness and instability, and change in laryngeal motor control, demonstrated by reduced speed and instability in laryngeal diadochokinesis. These features presented in patients with extensive middle cerebral artery stroke and in patients with short strokes with varied location in the brain. The results suggest that the vocal features in the assessed cases do not depend only on the topography of the brain damage. Thus, it is important to consider the patient as unique in clinical evaluation.

O objetivo do trabalho foi relatar um caso clínico sobre a síndrome de Crouzon, englobando as habilidades neuropsicolinguisticas. O estudo foi realizado com uma criança de oito anos e dois meses, do gênero masculino, com diagnóstico clínico da síndrome de Crouzon. Para a caracterização das habilidades foi realizada avaliação interdisciplinar com fonoaudiólogo, psicólogo e neurologista. A avaliação fonoaudiológica incluiu a avaliação das habilidades comunicativas, da linguagem oral, considerando as habilidades fonológicas, sintáticas, semânticas e pragmáticas, e da linguagem escrita. Para a avaliação neuropsicológica utilizou-se a escala Wechsler Scale for Children. A avaliação neurológica foi centrada no exame de ressonância magnética de encéfalo. O paciente também realizou avaliação audiológica, e apresentou perda auditiva condutiva de grau leve. Na avaliação clínica e formal da linguagem oral foi possível observar alterações nos aspectos fonológico e semântico da linguagem. Já com relação à linguagem escrita, observou-se desempenho aquém do esperado para a idade, caracterizado principalmente por alterações na escrita e na aritmética. Os resultados da avaliação neuropsicológica evidenciaram valores de Quociente Intelectual dentro dos padrões da normalidade. O resultado da ressonância magnética do encéfalo demonstrou alteração estrutural do sistema nervoso central. Pode-se concluir que os achados evidenciaram alterações nas habilidades de linguagem oral e escrita, além da presença de alteração estrutural do sistema nervoso central.

The aim of this study was to relate the neuropsycholinguistic abilities of a male child with eigth years and two months, diagnosed with Crouzon syndrome. The characterization of neropsycholinguitic abilities was based on a interdisciplinary evaluation carried out by a speech-language pathologist, a neurologist, and a psychologist. Speech-language evaluation included the assessment of communication skills, oral (phonological, syntactic, semantic and pragmatic abilities) and written language. The neuropsychological assessment used the Wechsler Scale for Children. The neurological evaluation was focused on the results of magnetic resonance imaging. The subject also carried out an audiological evaluation, which showed mild conductive hearing loss. In the oral language assessment, phonological and semantic deficits were observed. Written language performance was also below the expected for the subject's age, characterized mainly by writing and arithmetic deficits. The neuropsychological evaluation showed normal Intellectual Quotient. The results of the magnetic resonance imaging showed structural alterations of the central nervous system. Thus, the findings evidenced oral and written language deficits, and presence of structural alterations of the central nervous system.

OBJETIVO: Concentração elevada de homocisteína (Hcy) é considerada um fator de risco para doença arterial coronária (DAC). Alterações genéticas da enzima metilenotetrahidrofolato redutase (MTHFR), envolvida no metabolismo da Hcy, podem reduzir sua termolabilidade contribuindo para o desenvolvimento de lesões ateroscleróticas. O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar a relação entre os polimorfismos MTHFR C677T e A1298C e a presença, extensão e gravidade da DAC. MÉTODOS: Foram avaliados 175 pacientes com DAC, confirmada por angiografia e 108 indivíduos sem DAC (grupo controle). O polimorfismo MTHFR C677T foi investigado por reação em cadeia da polimerase (PCR) seguida de digestão enzimática. A genotipagem do polimorfismo MTHFR A1298C foi realizada pela técnica de PCR alelo-específica. RESULTADOS: A frequência do alelo alterado MTHFR 677C foi de 0,38 no grupo DAC e 0,37 no grupo controle. Em relação ao alelo polimórfico MTHFR 1298C, a frequência foi de 0,22 e 0,27, respectivamente. As distribuições genotípicas MTHFR C677T e A1298C não diferiram em relação ao número de artérias lesadas (P > 0,05). Também não foi observada relação entre o polimorfismo para MTHFR C677T e grau de obstrução arterial coronária (P > 0,05), assim como MTHFR A1298C (P > 0,05). CONCLUSÃO: Nossos resultados não demonstraram associação entre os polimorfismos MTHFR A1298C e MTHFR C677T e presença, extensão ou gravidade da DAC.

OBJECTIVE: Increased homocysteine (Hcy) concentration is considered a risk factor for coronary artery disease (CAD). Genetic alterations of the metylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) enzyme could reduce its thermolability and alter the Hcy metabolism, contributing to development of atherosclerotic lesions. Objective of this study was to investigate the relation between MTHFR C677T and A1298C polymorphisms and presence, extension, and severity of CAD. METHODS: One hundred seventy-five patients with CAD confirmed by angiography, and 108 individuals without CAD (control group) were evaluated. MTHFR C677T polymorphism was investigated by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) followed by enzyme digestion. The genotyping of the MTHFR A1298C polymorphism was performed by PCR allele-specific method. RESULTS: Frequency of the altered allele MTHFR 677C was 0.38 in the CAD group and 0.37 in the control group. Regarding the polymorphic allele MTHFR 1298C, frequency was 0.22 and 0.27, respectively. The genotype distribution MTHFR C677T and A1298C did not differ regarding number of affected vessels (P > 0.05). Also, relation between MTHFR C677T polymorphism and degree of arterial obstruction was not observed (P > 0.05), as well as the MTHFR A1298C polymorphism (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Results did not show association between MTHFR A1298C and MTHFR C677T polymorphisms and presence, extension or severity of CAD.

OBJETIVO: Analisar os indicadores de mortalidade para doenças cardiovasculares em São José do Rio Preto, no estado de São Paulo e no Brasil e avaliar os coeficientes de mortalidade segundo níveis socioeconômicos da população do município. MÉTODOS: Utilizaram-se informações sobre mortalidade por doenças cardiovasculares e de população do Sistema de Informações de Mortalidade e do Departamento de Informação e Informática do Sistema Único de Saúde. Calcularam-se coeficientes padronizados de mortalidade e mortalidade proporcional por doenças cardiovasculares. Gerou-se mapa temático dos setores censitários da área urbana do município agrupados segundo níveis socioeconômicos, apresentado com os respectivos coeficientes. RESULTADOS: Os coeficientes de mortalidade para o município, o estado e o país decresceram de 1980 a 2002. Em 2003, o coeficiente do município foi de 195,9 óbitos por 100.000 habitantes, a mortalidade proporcional foi de 31,3% e as três principais causas de morte foram a doença cerebrovascular, o infarto e a doença hipertensiva. O coeficiente de mortalidade da população correspondente ao grupo de setores censitários com o pior nível socioeconômico foi 40% superior ao com o melhor nível. CONCLUSÃO: O coeficiente de mortalidade por doenças cardiovasculares decresceu nas três áreas geográficas analisadas. Do total de óbitos ocorridos em São José do Rio Preto em 2003, aproximadamente um terço foi por este grupo de doenças. A área com nível socioeconômico menos favorecido apresentou o maior coeficiente de mortalidade.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze cardiovascular mortality indicators in São José do Rio Preto - a city in the State of São Paulo, Brazil - and to evaluate the municipality’s mortality rates by socioeconomic levels. METHODS: Data used came from the Mortality Information System and from the Information and Computing Department of the federal government’s Unified Health System (SUS). Standardized mortality rates and proportional cardiovascular mortality rates were calculated. A thematic map of the demographic census sectors of the city’s urban area - grouped according to socioeconomic levels - was drawn up and is presented with the respective rates. RESULTS: The municipal, state, and national mortality rates decreased in the course of the 1980-2002 period. The municipal mortality rate in 2003 stood at 195.9 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, with proportional cardiovascular mortality at 31.3%. The three main causes of death were cerebrovascular disease, myocardial infarction, and hypertensive disease. The mortality rate for the population corresponding to the group featuring the lowest socioeconomic levels was 40% higher than that of the group comprising the highest socioeconomic levels. CONCLUSION: The cardiovascular mortality rate decreased in the three geographical areas analyzed. This group of diseases was responsible for approximately one-third of all deaths in São José do Rio Preto in 2003. The area with the lowest socioeconomic level presented the highest mortality rate.
