RESUMO Plantas com capacidade de submersão contínua ou periódica, pelo menos do sistema radicular, são consideradas aquáticas ou palustres. Parte dessas plantas pertence a Solanaceae, uma família de distribuição cosmopolita, com aproximadamente 97 gêneros e 2700 espécies, das quais, uma minoria encontra-se em ambientes sazonalmente inundados. Este trabalho objetivou realizar um levantamento e apresentar um tratamento taxonômico de espécies de Solanaceae ocorrentes em ambientes aquáticos e palustres no Recôncavo da Bahia. O material botânico foi coletado entre 2009 e 2023. Foram registradas 14 espécies distribuídas em cinco gêneros. São fornecidos ilustrações e comentários sobre as características diagnósticas, bem como mapa de distribuição na área de estudo. Solanum, o gênero mais diverso da família, é o mais representativo na área de estudo. ABSTRACT Plants with continuous or periodic submersion capacity, of at least the root system, are considered aquatic or marsh. Part of these plants are within Solanaceae, a family of cosmopolitan distribution, with about 97 genera and 2700 species, of which, a minority are found in seasonally flooded environments. This work aimed to carry out a survey and present a taxonomic treatment of Solanaceae species of aquatic and marsh environments in Recôncavo of Bahia. Plant material was collected between 2009 and 2023. Fourteen species distributed in five genera were registered. Illustrations and comments about the diagnostic characters are provided, as well as distribution maps on the study area. Solanum, as the most diversified genus in the family, is the richest genus in the study area. Abstract As part of an ongoing treatment of species of the Brevantherum clade of Solanum, a new species from the Atlantic Forest of Brazil was discovered and is described here. Solanum helix Giacomin & Stehmann sp. nov. is a species well represented in herbaria that has been overlooked for almost two centuries. It has a unique expanded non-inflated fruiting calyx that resembles a propeller and that is not found in any unarmed species of Solanum. This discovery highlights the importance of continued herbarium and field work in hyperdiverse ecosystems, such as the Atlantic Forest in South America. Taxonomic affinities are discussed and images, as well as mapped distribution, are given. Abstract Scaphyglottis Poepp. & Endl. (Orchidaceae) is a neotropical genus with 78 species, 14 of which are found in Brazil. Some of these taxa have an intricate taxonomy, especially due to the morphological similarity among species and the existence of species complexes. Our study aims to test if the labellum shape, the main source of species diagnostic characters, can confirm the proposed circumscription of Brazilian species of Scaphyglottis. We analyzed 136 flowers from 12 species, to which we applied 12 landmarks, using a geometric morphometrics approach. Our results show that most species can be distinguished. Most of the variation is observed in the claw and apices of labellum lobes, confirming that the labellum is important tool in taxon distinction. Species with distinctly 3-lobed labellum showed some overlap but, for these taxa, we have found distinction specially in the lateral lobes. Our study showed new morphologically variable features in Scaphyglottis that can be used in future taxonomic studies. For widely distributed species we suggest a population-level approach, as local environmental factors can impact morphology, causing expected intraspecific variation. RESUMO Os minitomates tipo grape e cereja vêm conquistando o consumidor brasileiro pelo sabor adocicado, praticidade de consumo e versatilidade no uso culinário. Nesse contexto, o presente trabalho teve como objetivo caracterizar dez híbridos de tomate grape com base na diversidade genética e em descritores físicos e bioquímicos, afim de fornecer subsídios para o desenvolvimento de novas cultivares com foco no surgimento e enriquecimento de fatores nutricionais. Os híbridos avaliados foram Aiko, BRSIG, BRS Zamir, Carolina, Dolcetto, Dulce, Guaraci, Santa West, SCI-023 e Sweet Heaven. O experimento foi conduzido em 2019 na área experimental da Universidade Estadual de Londrina, utilizando o delineamento experimental em blocos completos ao acaso, com quatro repetições e seis plantas por repetição. As plantas foram cultivadas seguindo as práticas recomendadas para o cultivo do tomate. Os dados da caracterização física e bioquímica foram submetidos à análise de variância pelo teste F (p<0,05) e teste de agrupamento de médias de Scott & Knott (p<0,05); os dados da caracterização molecular foram submetidos à análise de coordenadas principais (PCoA) e agrupamento Bayesiano. O genótipo Aiko apresentou a maior massa e tamanho de fruto em relação ao observado para SCI-023, enquanto BRSIG apresentou o fruto mais firme e a maior espessura de pericarpo. SCI-023, Dolcetto e Sweet Heaven apresentaram maiores teores de açúcares totais. O teor de sólidos solúveis totais variou de 6,04 a 9,66 °Brix entre os genótipos. Os híbridos SCI-023, BRSIG, Sweet Heaven, BRS Zamir e Dulce apresentaram os maiores níveis de atividade antioxidante. Foram formados dois grupos na caracterização fenotípica. A caracterização genotípica mostrou sete grupos nos quais foi verificada alta similaridade genética entre BRS Zamir, SCI-023 e Guaraci, assim como Carolina e Dulce, enquanto a maior dissimilaridade foi observada entre Sweet Heaven e BRSIG. ABSTRACT Grape and cherry mini tomatoes have been conquering Brazilian consumers due to their sweet taste, practicality of consumption, and versatility in culinary use. Therefore, the present work aimed to characterize ten grape tomato hybrids based on genetic diversity and physical and biochemical traits to provide information for the development of new genotypes focused on the appearance and enrichment of nutritional factors. The evaluated hybrids were Aiko, BRSIG, BRS Zamir, Carolina, Dolcetto, Dulce, Guaraci, Santa West, SCI-023 and Sweet Heaven. The experiment was conducted in 2019 in a greenhouse at the State University of Londrina, using a completely randomized design with four replications and six plants in each replication. The plants were grown following the practices recommended for cultivating tomatoes. The physical and biochemical characterization data were subjected to analysis of variance by the F test (p<0.05) and Scott & Knott means cluster test (p<0.05), and the molecular characterization data were subjected to analysis of principal coordinates (PCoA) and Bayesian clustering. Aiko presented the highest fruit mass and size as opposed to that observed on SCI-023, while BRSIG was the firmest fruit with the largest pericarp thickness. SCI-023, Dolcetto, and Sweet Heaven had higher sugar content. The soluble solids content ranged from 6.04 to 9.66 °Brix among the genotypes. Hybrids SCI-023, BRSIG, Sweet Heaven, BRS Zamir, and Dulce had the highest antioxidant activity levels. In the phenotypic characterization two groups were formed. The genotypic characterization showed seven groups in which high genetic similarity was verified among BRS Zamir, SCI-023, and Guaraci, as well as between Carolina and Dulce. The greatest dissimilarity was observed between Sweet Heaven and BRSIG. Abstract The genus Scaphyglottis Poepp. & Endl. presents 78 species and occurs from Mexico to Brazil. Scaphyglottis punctulata (Rchb.f.) C.Schweinf. is known from various high elevation locations from Panama to Bolivia. Here, we report new records in two regions of the Brazil portion of the Guiana Shield. We provide a detailed description, photographic plates, updated distribution map, ecological and taxonomic comments for S. punctulata, and an identification key for Scaphyglottis species from the Brazilian portion of the Guiana Shield.

Abstract Banana ‘Prata’ has a significant demand in the Brazilian market, and Minas Gerais is one of the largest banana producers in the country. Scientific studies that evaluate the bananas quality produced in different cultivation regions are still incipient. Thus, this study evaluated the physical, biochemical and sensory attributes of banana ‘Prata’ from south and north of Minas Gerais and Vale do Ribeira (SP). Bananas from south were also cultivated in different production systems, organic and conventional. Data were submitted to multivariate analysis that provided the discrimination of the samples according to the cultivation regions. Bananas from southern presented higher levels of soluble solids and acidity, better taste, higher diameter and overall acceptance, where in the organic bananas were the most preferred by consumers. Fruit from northern stood out in appearance, texture, aroma and color, in addition to greater length. Fruit from Vale do Ribeira had higher levels of total phenolics and antioxidant activity. With these results we can assume that fruit quality is highly related to the specific climatic conditions from each producing region. Bananas from the south of Minas Gerais showed superiority for most of the evaluated traits, reflecting on consumer preference.

Resumo A Amazônia contém o maior remanescente de floresta contínua do planeta. No Brasil, representa cerca de 45% do território, mas contribui pouco para a economia do país. Este trabalho discute o uso da jutaicica, resina copal extraída de espécies arbóreas do gênero Hymenaea (Fabaceae), produto que já representou parte considerável da economia paraense. Apresentamos uma revisão histórica de seu uso, exploramos como e com que finalidade a resina é extraída e sua caracterização térmica e espectroscópica. No oeste do estado do Pará, a resina jutaicica é obtida principalmente de duas espécies, H. courbaril e H. parvifolia, e no passado era valorizada como matéria prima para a produção de verniz. As resinas dessas espécies são distintas de acordo com métodos térmicos e espectroscópicos. A análise térmica mostra que H. courbaril possui maior conteúdo de matriz polimerizada. Os espectros no infravermelho podem ser usados com precisão para diferenciar as fontes e demonstram maior uniformidade nas amostras de H. courbaril, o que é corroborado pelos espectros 13C-RMN analisados. Jutaicica é um dos muitos produtos florestais não madeireiros que carecem de investimentos em ciência e tecnologia para uma reintegração econômica, uma importante contribuição de renda nas reservas extrativistas, que desempenham um papel fundamental na conservação da Amazônia.
Abstract Amazonia contains the largest remnant of continuous forest on the planet. In Brazil, it represents nearly 45% of the territory but contributes little to the country’s economy. This work discusses the use of jutaicica copal resin extracted from tree species of the genus Hymenaea (Fabaceae), which once represented a considerable part of the economy of Pará state. We present a review of its historical use, explore how and for what purpose the resin is extracted, and characterize it based on thermal and spectroscopic techniques. In western Pará state, jutaicica is gathered mainly from two species, H. courbaril and H. parvifolia, and in the past was used as a valuable source for varnish production. The resins from these species are distinctive according to thermal and spectroscopic methods. Thermal analysis shows H. courbaril might be a better source for polymer gathering. Infrared spectra can be accurately used to differentiate sources and demonstrate more uniformity in samples from H. courbaril, which is corroborated by the 13C-RMN spectra of the analyzed batches. Jutaicica is one of many non-timber forest products lacking investments for economic reintegration, an important contribution of income in extractive reserves, which play a key role in the conservation of Amazonia.

RESUMO Brócolis (Brassica oleracea var. italica) é umas das principais hortaliças do mundo e apresenta importantes propriedades funcionais. O presente estudo teve como objetivo caracterizar 19 genótipos de brócolis por meio de caracteres bioquímicos (teor de compostos fenólicos totais, flavonoides totais e atividade antioxidante) e marcadores moleculares do tipo AFLP (Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism). O experimento foi realizado em casa de vegetação usando delineamento em blocos completos ao acaso com três repetições. Os dados fenotípicos foram submetidos à análise de variância (p≤0,05), agrupamento de média de Scott-Knott (p≤0,05) e análise de componentes principais (PCA). A partir dos dados moleculares, foram realizados os agrupamentos hierárquicos de Ward, agrupamento Bayesiano e análise de coordenadas principais (PCoA). Os dados moleculares indicaram diversidade genética entre os genótipos (três grupos), além de ampla variabilidade para o teor de compostos fenólicos totais, flavonoides totais e atividade antioxidante pelo método FRAP. Os genótipos HT3010, Hanabi e Bonanza apresentam características bioquímicas desejáveis aos consumidores exigentes em alimentos funcionais, além de serem genótipos promissores para serem explorados em programas de melhoramento da cultura.
ABSTRACT Broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica) is one of the most important vegetables in the world and also shows important functional properties. The present study aimed to characterize 19 broccoli genotypes using biochemical traits (content of total phenolic compounds, total flavonoids and antioxidant activity) and AFLP (Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism) molecular markers. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse using a complete randomized block design with three replicates. The phenotypic data were subjected to analysis of variance (p≤0.05), Scott-Knott average clustering method (p≤0.05) and principal component analysis (PCA). Using molecular data, Ward’s hierarchical clustering, Bayesian clustering and principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) were performed. Molecular data showed genetic diversity among the genotypes (three groups), also a wide variability in the total phenolic compounds, total flavonoids content and antioxidant activity using FRAP method. HT3010, Hanabi and Bonanza genotypes showed desirable biochemical traits for the demanding functional food consumers, in addition to being promising genotypes to be exploited in plant breeding programs.

Abstract The Program for Biodiversity Research (PPBio) is an innovative program designed to integrate all biodiversity research stakeholders. Operating since 2004, it has installed long-term ecological research sites throughout Brazil and its logic has been applied in some other southern-hemisphere countries. The program supports all aspects of research necessary to understand biodiversity and the processes that affect it. There are presently 161 sampling sites (see some of them at Supplementary Appendix), most of which use a standardized methodology that allows comparisons across biomes and through time. To date, there are about 1200 publications associated with PPBio that cover topics ranging from natural history to genetics and species distributions. Most of the field data and metadata are available through PPBio web sites or DataONE. Metadata is available for researchers that intend to explore the different faces of Brazilian biodiversity spatio-temporal variation, as well as for managers intending to improve conservation strategies. The Program also fostered, directly and indirectly, local technical capacity building, and supported the training of hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students. The main challenge is maintaining the long-term funding necessary to understand biodiversity patterns and processes under pressure from global environmental changes.

ABSTRACT The evaluation of genetic diversity among the accessions of a germplasm collection results in information about promising materials suitable for breeding programs. Thus, the goal of this work was to characterize Capsicum baccatum accessions from different Brazilian regions, based on morphological, biochemical and molecular traits, aiming to support chili pepper breeding programs. The fruits were morphologically characterized based on fruit length, diameter, fresh mass and pericarp thickness, and biochemically analyzed for their content in ascorbic and phenolic acids, flavonoid and antioxidant activity by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH•) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. All phenotypic traits showed significant differences among the chili pepper accessions, indicating a wide variability. The fruits were also characterized using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) molecular markers. The combination of six AFLP primers resulted in 1117 bands, 1033 of which were polymorphic. Divergence between accessions was estimated by the Ward’s hierarchical agglomerative clustering method, resulting in three and two clusters for fruit phenotypic traits and molecular data, respectively. In Bayesian analysis, molecular data also clustered the accessions in two groups. There was no association between the phenotypic descriptors and AFLP markers, indicating that both characterizations are important to better understand the genetic variability. Furthermore, it was not possible to group the accessions solely based on their origin for neither phenotypic descriptors and AFLP markers. The accessions G1, G5, G6, and G20 showed interesting characteristics and can be used in breeding programs, aiming the development of Capsicum spp. cultivars with desirable morphological and biochemical traits.

Resumo Apresentamos o tratamento das espécies de Solanaceae ocorrentes em formações de canga da Serra dos Carajás, estado do Pará, Brasil. São registradas vinte e três espécies nativas ou naturalizadas já estabelecidas, em cinco gêneros: Cestrum, Hawkesiophyton, Physalis, Schwenckia e Solanum. Das espécies descritas, dezenove estão contidas no gênero Solanum, sendo a maioria delas de áreas abertas antropizadas ou bordas de florestas, ocorrendo ocasionalmente nas formações de canga. Descrições, chaves de identificação para os táxons e ilustrações são fornecidas.
Abstract We present an account of Solanaceae species occurring in the canga formations of the Serra dos Carajás, Pará state, Brazil. Twenty-three species are recorded, both native or established adventive, grouped in five genera: Cestrum, Hawkesiophyton, Physalis, Schwenckia, and Solanum. Nineteen of the described species belong to the hiperdiverse genus Solanum, most of them from open areas or forest edges, occasionally occurring in canga formations. Descriptions, identification keys for the taxa, and illustrations are provided.

The genus Solanumis among the most species-rich genera both of the Peruvian flora and of the tropical Andes in general. The present revised checklist treats 276 species of SolanumL., of which 253 are native, while 23 are introduced and/or cultivated. A total of 74 Solanumspecies (29% of native species) are endemic to Peru. Additional 58 species occur only in small number of populations outside Peru, and these species are here labelled as near-endemics to highlight the role Peru playes in their future protection. Species diversity is observed to peak between 2500 - 3000 m elevation, but endemic species diversity is highest between 3000 - 3500 m elevation. Cajamarca has the highest number of endemic (29 spp.) and total species (130 spp.), even when considering the effect of area. Centers of endemic species diversity are observed in provinces of Cajamarca(Cajamarca),Huaraz and Carhuaz (Ancash), and Canta and Huarochirí (Lima). Secondary centres of endemism with high concentrations of both endemics and near-endemics are found in San Ignacio and Cutervo (Cajamarca), Santiago de Chuco (La Libertad), Oxapampa (Pasco), and Cusco (Cusco). Current diversity patterns are highly correlated with collection densities, and further collecting is needed across all areas, especially from Arequipa, Ayacucho, Puno, Ancash, Huánuco, Amazonas and Cajamarca, where high levels of species diversity and endemism are indicated but only a few collections of many species are known.
SolanumL. es uno de los géneros que posee una alta riqueza de especies dentro de la flora peruana y dentro de los Andes tropicales en general. Presentamos una lista revisada de 276 especies de Solanum para el Perú, de estas 253 son nativas, mientras que 23 son introducidas y/o cultivadas. Un total de 74 especies de Solanum (29% de las especies nativas) son endémicas de Perú. Además 58 especies se encuentran solamente en pequeñas poblaciones fuera del Perú, y estas especies están designadas aquí como casi endémicas para destacar el rol importante del Perú en la futura protección de estas especies. El pico de diversidad de especies es observado entre 2500 - 3000 m de elevación, pero la diversidad de especies endémicas es más alta entre 3000 - 3500 m. Cajamarca tiene el más alto número de especies (130 spp.) y de especies endémicas (29 spp.), incluso si se considera el efecto del área. Centros de diversidad de especies endémicas se localizan en las provincias de Cajamarca (Cajamarca), Huaraz y Carhuaz (Ancash), Canta y Huarochirí (Lima). Centros de endemismos secundarios con una alta concentración tanto de especies endémicas y de casi endémicas se encuentran en San Ignacio y Cutervo (Cajamarca), Santiago de Chuco (La Libertad), Oxapampa (Pasco), y Cusco (Cusco): Los actuales patrones de diversidad están altamente correlacionados con la densidad de colecciones, por lo que es necesario una mayor colecta en todas las regiones, especialmente en Arequipa, Ayacucho, Puno, Ancash, Huánuco, Amazonas y Cajamarca, donde se indican altos niveles de diversidad y endemismo de especies, pero de las cuales existen pocas colecciones.

Resumo Um levantamento atualizado das plantas com sementes e análises relevantes acerca desta biodiversidade são apresentados. Este trabalho se iniciou em 2010 com a publicação do Catálogo de Plantas e Fungos e, desde então vem sendo atualizado por mais de 430 especialistas trabalhando online. O Brasil abriga atualmente 32.086 espécies nativas de Angiospermas e 23 espécies nativas de Gimnospermas e estes novos dados mostram um aumento de 3% da riqueza em relação a 2010. A Amazônia é o Domínio Fitogeográfico com o maior número de espécies de Gimnospermas, enquanto que a Floresta Atlântica possui a maior riqueza de Angiospermas. Houve um crescimento considerável no número de espécies e nas taxas de endemismo para a maioria dos Domínios (Caatinga, Cerrado, Floresta Atlântica, Pampa e Pantanal), com exceção da Amazônia que apresentou uma diminuição de 2,5% de endemicidade. Entretanto, a maior parte das plantas com sementes que ocorrem no Brasil (57,4%) é endêmica deste território. A proporção de formas de vida varia de acordo com os diferentes Domínios: árvores são mais expressivas na Amazônia e Floresta Atlântica do que nos outros biomas, ervas são dominantes no Pampa e as lianas apresentam riqueza expressiva na Amazônia, Floresta Atlântica e Pantanal. Este trabalho não só quantifica a biodiversidade brasileira, mas também indica as lacunas de conhecimento e o desafio a ser enfrentado para a conservação desta flora.
Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.
