In the present study, non-thermal plasma (NTP) of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) was used to investigate the precipitation of salt from hypersaline waters obtained by evaporating seawater. A dripper was used to release drops of water over the NTP discharge between the droplet surface and a copper ring in a glass tub working as a DBD. Results showed that the precipitation rate of the NTP-treated solution was significantly higher than that of the untreated solution, with a larger number of small crystals formed, and multiple charged ions preferentially precipitated. These findings suggest that the external electric field from NTP aligns and weakens the hydration of ions, leading to the binding of dehydrated cations and anions, and inducing nucleation/precipitation. Additionally, the NTP discharge channels formed at the gas-liquid interface cause rapid dehydration of ions, which further induce nucleation and crystal formation. This could explain the preferential precipitation of small crystals containing multiple charged ions. Abstract Objectives Evidence suggests that ketamine’s influence on brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) might be involved in its mechanism of rapid antidepressant action. We aimed to evaluate the differential impact of ketamine and esketamine on serum BDNF levels and its association with response patterns in treatment-resistant depression (TRD). Methods Participants (n = 53) are from a randomized, double-blind clinical trial comparing the efficacy of single-dose ketamine (0.5mg/kg, n = 27) and esketamine (0.25mg/kg, n = 26) in TRD. Depression severity was assessed before and 24 hours, 72 hours, and 7 days after the intervention, using the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS). Blood samples were collected before infusion, 24 hours, and 7 days afterwards. Results There were no significant changes in BDNF levels at post-infusion evaluation points, and no difference in BDNF levels comparing ketamine and esketamine. Both drugs exhibited similar therapeutic effect. There was no association between BDNF levels and response to treatment or severity of depressive symptoms. Conclusion There was no significant treatment impact on BDNF serum levels – neither with ketamine nor esketamine – despite therapeutic response. These results suggest that ketamine or esketamine intervention for TRD has no impact on BDNF levels measured at 24 hours and 7 days after the infusion. Resumo A poliploidia, uma alteração numérica do cariótipo, é um dos mecanismos mais importantes na especiação e diversificação das plantas, mas também pode ser detectada entre populações, os citótipos. Por exemplo, Psidium cattleyanum, um complexo poliplóide, tem números de cromossomos que variam de 2n=3x=33 a 2n=12x=132. A poliploidização causa um aumento no conteúdo de DNA, e ambas as modificações podem alterar o crescimento, a fisiologia e a epigenética da planta. Com base nessa possibilidade, objetivamos verificar a influência da poliploidização na produção de quimiotipos de óleo essencial de P. cattleyanum. Diferenças nos conteúdos de DNA, representando diferentes ploidias, foram observadas e três quimiotipos distintos foram identificados através da análise do perfil cromatográfico. O conteúdo de DNA de Psidium cattleyanum e as características qualitativas e quantitativas dos óleos essenciais apresentaram correlação positiva. Plantas com maiores conteúdos de DNA apresentaram maiores rendimentos na produção de óleo, que era majoritariamente composto por sesquiterpenos hidrogenados, enquanto plantas com menores conteúdos de DNA produziram menores quantidade de óleo, que era majoritariamente composto por monoterpenos hidrogenados. Com base na importância dos óleos essenciais, plantas poliplóides, que apresentam maiores conteúdos de DNA, são recomendadas como possíveis matrizes para a propagação de novas plantas com potencial para produzir compostos importantes de interesse agronômico e farmacológico.

Abstract Polyploidy, a numerical alteration of the karyotype, is one of the most important mechanisms in plant speciation and diversification, but could also be detected among populations, the cytotypes. For example, Psidium cattleyanum, a polyploid complex, has chromosome numbers ranging from 2n=3x=33 to 2n=12x=132. Polyploidization causes an increase in DNA content, and both modifications may cause alteration in plant growth, physiology, and epigenetics. Based on this possibility, here we aim to verify the influence of the polyploidization on the production of P. cattleyanum essential oil chemotypes. Differences in the DNA contents, as a proxy to different ploidies, were observed and three distinct chemotypes were identified through the chromatographic profile analysis. The Psidium cattleyanum DNA content and qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the essential oils presented a positive relationship. Plants with higher DNA contents presented higher levels of oil production, which was mostly composed of hydrogenated sesquiterpenes, while plants with lower DNA contents produced lower amount of oil, which was mostly composed of hydrogenated monoterpenes. Based on the importance of essential oils, polyploid plants, which present higher DNA content, are recommended as possible matrices for the propagation of new plants with the potential to produce major compounds of agronomic and pharmacological interest.

ABSTRACT The Big Data phenomenon has imposed maturity on companies regarding the exploration of their data, as a prerogative to obtain valuable insights into their clients and the power of analysis to guide decision-making processes. Therefore, a general approach that describes how to extract knowledge for the execution of the business strategy needs to be established. The purpose of this research paper is to introduce and evaluate the implementation of a process for the experimental development of Data Mining (DM), AI and Data Science applications aligned with the strategic planning. A case study with the proposed process was conducted in a federal educational institution. The results generated evidence showing that it is possible to integrate a strategic alignment approach, an experimental method, and a methodology for the development of DM applications. Data Mining (DM) and Data Science (DS) applications also present the risks of other Information Systems, and the adoption of strategy-driven and scientific method processes are critical success factors. Moreover, it was possible to conclude that the application of the scientific method was facilitated, besides being an important tool to ensure the quality, reproducibility and transparency of intelligent applications. In conclusion, the process needs to be mapped to foment and guide the strategic alignment.

Abstract Herbicides are agrochemicals applied in the control of weeds. With the frequent and repetitive use of these substances, serious problems have been reported. Compounds of natural origin and their derivatives are attractive options to obtain new compounds with herbicidal properties. By aiming to develop compounds with potentiated herbicidal activity, phenoxyacetic acids were synthesized from eugenol and guaiacol. The synthesized compounds were characterized and the herbicidal potential of phenoxyacetic acids and precursors was evaluated through bioassays regarding the germination and initial development of Lactuca sativa and Sorghum bicolor seedlings, with the induction of DNA damage. The induction of changes in the mitotic cycle of meristematic cells of roots of L. sativa was also analyzed. At the concentration of 3 mmol L-1, phenols and their respective phenoxyacetic acids presented phytotoxic and cytotoxic activities in L. sativa and S. bicolor. Eugenol and guaiacol also presented genotoxic action in L. sativa. The toxic effect of eugenoxyacetic acid was more pronounced in L. sativa than in S. bicolor, similar to the commercial 2,4-D herbicide. Molecular properties of the phenols and their derivatives phenoxyacetic acids were compared with the ones obtained for the herbicide 2,4-D, where it was found a correlation between their molecular properties and bioactivity.

RESUMO Pequenos mamíferos em paisagem altamente fragmentada em ecótono Cerrado/Mata Atlântica, Sudeste do Brasil. Atividades humanas exploratórias resultaram na formação de pequenos fragmentos inseridos em uma matriz inóspita para pequenos mamíferos não-voadores. Os efeitos das mudanças na paisagem alteram os padrões de distribuição das espécies. Os padrões de fragmentação da paisagem para pequenos mamíferos são controversos, especialmente considerando pequenos fragmentos e regiões ecotonais. Com base nesses argumentos, investigamos os padrões de diversidade de pequenos mamíferos em pequenos fragmentos na região ecotonal Cerrado / Mata Atlântica. Vinte e quatro fragmentos (<40 ha) foram estudados, usando armadilhas de grade, chapa e de queda. Encontramos baixa riqueza de espécies (11 espécies, seis marsupiais e cinco roedores), o que não era esperado por se tratar de uma região ecotonal. Verificamos que a composição e a estrutura da comunidade são simplificadas pela presença de espécies generalistas e com o aumento do turnover de espécies. Os pequenos fragmentos florestais apresentam uma estrutura de microhabitat com lianas e riachos como principais filtros ambientais de grupos com semelhanças ecológicas. Nossos resultados sugerem que esses fragmentos devem ser manejados para conservar a biodiversidade local e manter as características dentro dos fragmentos para possibilitar a ocorrência de diferentes grupos ecológicos.

ABSTRACT Exploratory human activities have resulted in small fragments inserted into a matrix which is inhospitable to small non-flying mammals. The effects of landscape changes alter the distribution patterns of species. Landscape fragmentation patterns for small mammals are controversial, especially considering small fragments and ecotonal regions. Based on these arguments, we investigated the diversity patterns of small mammals in small fragments in the ecotonal Cerrado/Atlantic Forest region. A total of 24 fragments (<40 ha) were studied using tomahawk, sherman and pitfall traps. We found low species richness (11 species, six marsupials and five rodents), which was not expected because it is an ecotonal region. It was verified that composition and community structure are simplified by the marked presence of generalist species and with the increase of species turnover. The small forest fragments present a microhabitat structure with lianas and streams as main environmental filters of groups with ecological similarities. Our findings suggest that these fragments must be managed in order to conserve the local biodiversity and maintain the needed characteristics to enable the occurrence of different ecological groups.

RESUMO OBJETIVOS Comparar as concentrações séricas das adipocinas resistina e quemerina em crianças e adolescentes com eutrofia e excesso de peso e avaliar sua relação com as variáveis antropométricas, bioquímicas e a pressão arterial. MÉTODOS Estudo epidemiológico transversal realizado com 234 estudantes matriculados em escolas públicas do ensino fundamental no município de Juiz de Fora/MG. Realizou-se avaliação antropométrica, bioquímica e aferição da pressão arterial. As análises estatísticas compreenderam os testes t de Student ou Mann-Whitney, correlação de Pearson ou Spearman, utilizados de acordo com a distribuição das variáveis, e análise de regressão linear, realizada por meio da avaliação do efeito das variáveis independentes nos níveis séricos de quemerina e resistina, ajustado por idade e sexo. Para a análise dos dados foram utilizados os softwares SPSS® versão 21.0 e Stata® versão 10.1, admitindo-se nível de significância de 5%. RESULTADOS As concentrações de quemerina foram maiores nos indivíduos eutróficos do que nos com excesso de peso (p>0,05). Em contrapartida, os níveis de resistina estiveram maiores nos jovens com excesso ponderal do que nos eutróficos (p<0,05). Na análise de regressão linear múltipla, os níveis de quemerina apresentaram associação com os valores de resistina, pressão arterial sistólica e diastólica. Os níveis de resistina mantiveram associação apenas com os valores de IMC e quemerina. CONCLUSÃO As adipocinas analisadas apresentaram perfil distinto nos grupos de crianças e adolescentes com eutrofia e com excesso de peso.

SUMMARY OBJECTIVES To compare the serum concentrations of adipokines resistin and chemerin in children and adolescents with eutrophic and overweight and to evaluate their relationship with anthropometric, biochemical, and blood pressure variables. METHODS a cross-sectional epidemiological study was conducted with 234 students enrolled in public elementary schools in the city of Juiz de Fora / MG. Anthropometric evaluation, biochemistry, and blood pressure measurement were performed. Statistical analyzes included the Student-t or Mann-Whitney tests, Pearson or Spearman correlation, used according to the distribution of the variables, and linear regression analysis, by means of the evaluation of the effect of the independent variables on the serum levels of chemerin and resistin, adjusted for age and sex. For the data analysis, SPSS® software version 21.0 and STATA® version 10.1 were used, assuming a significance level of 5%. RESULTS the concentrations of chemerin were higher in eutrophic individuals than in those with excess weight (p> 0.05). In contrast, levels of resistin were higher in the young with excess weight than in the eutrophic ones (p <0.05). In the multiple linear regression analysis, the levels of chemerin were associated with the values of resistin, systolic, and diastolic blood pressure. Resistance levels maintained association only with BMI and chemerin values. CONCLUSION the adipokines analyzed presented a distinct profile in the groups of children and adolescents with eutrophic and overweight.

RESUMO: Mineralização patológica é a deposição anormal de minerais em tecidos previamente lesados ou não. Nessas lesões, além do cálcio, outros minerais podem ser encontrados em concentrações inferiores. Classicamente, as mineralizações são divididas em dois tipos: distrófica e metastática. Contudo, atualmente, ainda não há consenso entre os pesquisadores sobre o tipo de mineralização que ocorre em cães urêmicos. Objetivou-se com esse estudo elucidar o tipo de mineralização patológica que ocorre em cães com síndrome urêmica através da correlação de exames bioquímicos com alterações macroscópicas e histopatológicas, visto a existência de informações controversas na literatura especializada. Os dados obtidos foram submetidos ao teste de Shapiro-Wilk e teste de D’Agostino e Pearson para avaliação da normalidade da distribuição e para comparação de dados em mais de dois grupos foi utilizado o teste ANOVA. Adicionalmente, o teste de comparações múltiplas de Dunnett permitiu a comparação entre o grupo controle (GC) com os demais grupos (G1, G2 e G3). Foram avaliados os níveis séricos de ureia, creatinina, cálcio total e ionizado, fósforo, produto cálcio-fósforo (PCF), PTH e albumina de 40 cães azotêmicos com doença renal crônica (DRC). Os cães foram classificados quanto ao grau de azotemia (leve, moderada e severa). Verificou-se hipocalcemia ionizada em 97,5% (39/40) dos cães e, em nenhum animal houve hipercalcemia ionizada. Hiperfosfatemia foi frequente (62,5%), principalmente em cães com azotemia severa. A concentração do PTH aumentou conforme a progressão da azotemia, encontrando-se elevada em 100% dos cães com azotemia severa. Em 75% (30/40) dos cães o PCF foi superior a 60mg2/dl2. Durante o estudo, 29 cães morreram, sendo 16 desses necropsiados. Em 93,7% (15/16) desses cães observou-se mineralização de tecidos moles, durante a avaliação macroscópica e histopatológica (HE e Von Kossa), independentemente do grau de azotemia, em nove órgãos/tecidos: rins (75%), pulmões (50%), estômago (31,2%), coração (25%), laringe (25%), músculos intercostais (25%), aorta (6,2%), intestino (6,2%) e língua (6,2%). Adicionalmente, em um animal verificou-se na serosa de todos os segmentos do intestino delgado placas multifocais brancacentas, rugosas, irregulares de tamanhos variados, cuja histopatologia confirmou tratar-se de mineralização distrófica da camada longitudinal muscular externa que apresentava necrose de coagulação e da serosa intestinal. Essa lesão intestinal nunca havia sido descrita em cães com síndrome urêmica. Em suma, os dados laboratoriais e histopatológicos aqui descritos, sobretudo, no que se refere à mineralização tecidual e vascular, que ocorrem relacionadas a lesões degenerativo-necróticas prévias, na ausência de hipercalcemia, em cães com DRC, ajudam a esclarecer as incongruências existentes na literatura. Por conseguinte, conceitualmente, as mineralizações que ocorrem em cães urêmicos devem ser consideradas distróficas.

ABSTRACT: Pathological mineralization is the abnormal deposition of minerals in body tissues, previously injured or not. In these lesions, in addition to calcium, other minerals can be found at lower concentrations. Classically, mineralization is divided into two types: dystrophic and metastatic. However, currently, there is no consensus among researchers on the type of mineralization that occurs in uremic dogs. The objective of this study was to elucidate the type of pathological mineralization that occurs in dogs with uremic syndrome through the correlation of biochemical examinations with gross and histopathological changes, given the existence of controversial information on this theme in the specialized literature. The Shapiro-Wilk, D’Agostino and Pearson tests were used to evaluate data normality distribution, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) was applied to compare the data between more than two groups. Additionally, the Dunnett’s multiple comparison test was used in the comparison between the Control Group (CG) and the Experimental Groups (G1, G2, and G3). Serum levels of urea, creatinine, total and ionized calcium, phosphorus, calcium-phosphorus product (CPP), parathyroid hormone (PTH), and albumin of 40 azotemic dogs with chronic kidney disease (CKD) were evaluated. Dogs were categorized by degree of azotemia (mild, moderate, and severe). Ionized hypocalcemia was observed in 97.5% (39/40) of the dogs, and no animals presented ionized hypercalcemia. Hyperphosphatemia was frequent (62.5%), especially in dogs with severe azotemia. PTH concentration increased with progression of azotemia, and high PTH levels were verified in 100% of the dogs with severe azotemia. CPP >60mg2/dl2 was observed in 75% (30/40) of the dogs. Of the 29 dogs that died during the study period, 16 were necropsied. Soft tissue mineralization was observed in 93.7% (15/16) of these dogs at gross and histopathological evaluation (HE and Von Kossa), regardless of the degree of azotemia, in nine organs/tissues: kidneys (75%), lungs (50%), stomach (31.2%), heart (25%), larynx (25%), intercostal muscles (25%), aorta (6.2%), intestines (6.2%), and tongue (6.2%). In one animal, the serosa of all segments of the small intestine showed whitish, rough, irregular, multifocal plaques of varying sizes, confirmed by histopathology as dystrophic mineralization of the longitudinal outer muscular layer, which presented necrosis of coagulation and of the intestinal serosa. This intestinal lesion has not been described in dogs with uremic syndrome to date. In conclusion, the laboratory and histopathologic data previously described, especially regarding tissue and vascular mineralization, which occur in association with previous degenerative/necrotic lesions in the absence of hypercalcemia in dogs with CKD, assist with clarifying inconsistencies found in the existing literature. Therefore, conceptually, mineralization that occurs in uremic dogs should be considered dystrophic.

Objetiva-se investigar na literatura se as interleucinas são mediadores que influenciam negativamente ou positivamente o prognóstico de pacientes com carcinoma de células escamosas intraoral. Um estudo de revisão sistemática foi realizado segundo as instruções do Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). As bases de dados PubMed (incluindo MedLine), Scopus, Web of Science, SciELO e Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences (LILACS) foram utilizadas como fontes de estudo primárias; OpenGrey e OpenThesis, utilizadas para pesquisar a "literatura cinzenta". A busca realizada em sete bases de dados gerais resultou em um conjunto de 858 estudos, enquanto a realizada em duas bases de dados para literatura cinza, em 82 estudos, totalizando 940 pesquisas. Destas, 15 foram selecionadas para a presente revisão sistemática (oito estudos apresentaram baixo risco de viés; quatro, moderado risco de viés; e três, alto risco de viés). Apesar de poderem atuar nas vias de resposta imune antitumoral, as IL avaliadas nesta revisão (IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12 e IL-13) tendem a apresentar uma resposta associada à intensificação do processo de carcinogênese e ao prognóstico desfavorável em pacientes portadores do carcinoma de células escamosas intraoral.

ABSTRACT Squamous cell carcinoma is a malignant neoplasm that affects the structures and tissues of the oral cavity. Interleukins (IL) synthesized from a tumor modulate a cascade reaction that may influence the prognosis of the disease. We aim to investigate in the literature whether interleukins are mediators that negatively or positively influence the prognosis of patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma. A systematic review study was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyzes (PRISMA) instructions. PubMed (including MedLine), Scopus, Web of Science, SciELO and Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences (LILACS) databases were used as the primary sources for the study; OpenGrey and OpenThesis were used to search for "gray literature". The search conducted in seven general databases resulted in a set of 858 studies, while the search conducted in two databases for gray literature resulted in 82 studies, totaling 940 studies. From these, 15 studies were selected for this systematic review (eight studies presented low bias risk; four studies presented moderate bias risk; and three studies presented high risk of bias). Although they may act on the anti-tumor immune response pathways, the IL evaluated in the present systematic review (IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12 and IL-13) tend to present a response associated with the intensification of carcinogenesis and poor prognosis in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma.

Interleucinas (IL) sintetizadas a partir de un tumor modulan una cascada de reacciones que puede influenciar el pronóstico de la enfermedad. Nuestro objetivo es investigar en la literatura si las IL son mediadoras que influyen negativamente o positivamente en el pronóstico de pacientes con carcinoma oral de células escamosas. Un estudio de revisión sistemática fue realizado bajo las instrucciones del Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). Las bases de datos PubMed (incluyendo MedLine), Scopus, Web of Science, SciELO y Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences (LILACS) fueron usadas como fuentes primarias de estudio; OpenGrey y OpenThesis, para pesquisar la literatura gris. La búsqueda realizada en siete bases de datos generales resultó en un conjunto de 858 estudios, mientras la búsqueda realizada en dos bases de datos para literatura gris resultó en 82 estudios, totalizando 940 investigaciones. Entre ellas, 15 fueron elegidas para la presente revisión sistemática (ocho estudios presentaron bajo riesgo de sesgo; cuatro, riesgo moderado; tres, riesgo alto). A pesar de poder actuar en vías de respuesta inmune antitumoral, las IL evaluadas en esta revisión (IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12, y IL-13) suelen presentar una respuesta asociada a la intensificación del proceso de carcinogénesis y al pronóstico desfavorable en pacientes portadores de carcinoma oral de células escamosas.

This study aimed to use a differential pulse voltammetric (DPV) assay, based on the electroreduction of oxygen, to evaluate the antioxidant capacity of pequi pulp. The results were expressed in coefficient of antioxidant capacity (K), at different pH values and in trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC), and were compared to the 2,2’-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) spectrophotometric assays. The principal component analysis showed higher K for pequi pulp extract and pH tending to 7.15. The antioxidant capacity was related to the presence of gallic acid in its composition. Regarding the TEAC value, the best result was obtained by the DPV test (53.43 ± 5.14 µmol trolox g-1 pulp). The pequi pulp showed antioxidant capacity, compared to the standard antioxidant compounds evaluated. It was concluded that the voltammetric protocol was efficient to assess the total antioxidant capacity of pequi pulp and can be an alternative to conventional spectrophotometric assays, for the analysis of food matrices.

Resumo Nas últimas décadas, pesquisas estão sendo desenvolvidas para obtenção de materiais eficientes e economicamente viáveis para aplicação em diversos setores da indústria. Os materiais mesoporosos da família MCM-41 estão entre os candidatos eficazes pela facilidade de síntese e estrutura que favorece uma gama de aplicações. O objetivo desse trabalho foi apresentar uma abordagem rítica das características e propriedades dos materiais mesoporosos do tipo MCM-41, enfocando nos aspectos estruturais. Além isso, foram discutidas as vantagens e desvantagens do uso de sílica comerciais e alternativas. As fontes de sílica comerciais analisadas foram sílica gel e TEOS; já as fontes de sílica alternativas foram cinza da casca de arroz, quartzo e pó de vidro. Os materiais analisados foram sintetizados pelo método hidrotérmico e caracterizados por DRX, FTIR, BET e TG. Os resultados apresentados comprovam a eficiência das fontes de sílica alternativas na síntese do MCM-41, pois os materiais apresentaram propriedades texturais dentro dos padrões exigidos. Dessa forma, eles estão aptos a serem testados na indústria em substituição aos MCM-41 sintetizados com fonte de sílica comercial.

Abstract In recent decades, research has been developed to achieve efficient and economically viable materials for application in various industry sectors. The mesoporous materials of MCM-41 family are among the effective candidates due to the facility of synthesis and structure that favors a range of applications. The aim of this study was to present a critical analysis of the characteristics and properties of mesoporous materials MCM-41 type, focusing on the structural aspects. In addition, the advantages and disadvantages of using commercial and alternative silica have been discussed. The commercial silica sources were TEOS and silica gel; the alternative silica sources were rice husk ash, quartz and glass powder. The analyzed materials were synthesized by hydrothermal method and characterized by XRD, FTIR, BET and TG. The results demonstrate the efficiency of alternative sources of silica in the synthesis of MCM-41, since the materials presented textural properties within the required standards. Therefore, they are able to be tested in the industry to replace the MCM-41 synthesized with commercial silica source.

As características físicas e hidráulicas do solo se constituem em condicionantes a planos de manejo agrícola. Objetivou-se avaliar atributos físicos em solos de um vale aluvial e sua variabilidade, no semiárido do Estado de Pernambuco, na bacia hidrográfica do Rio Ipanema. Técnicas estatísticas e geoestatísticas foram utilizadas a fim de se investigar o grau de dependência e a variabilidade espacial dos atributos, em lotes de agricultura familiar. O coeficiente de variação apresentou-se alto para a condutividade hidráulica do solo e médio para a resistência à penetração de raízes e para as frações granulométricas areia, argila e silte. Tal coeficiente foi baixo para a densidade do solo e de partículas e porosidade total. Foram investigadas as estruturas de dependência espacial para as variáveis estudadas, encontrando-se alcances variando de 135 m para a condutividade hidráulica a 465 m para o conteúdo de silte. Mapa de isolinhas foi elaborado por krigagem representando a variabilidade espacial da condutividade hidráulica, com moderado grau de dependência espacial. As frações granulométricas areia total e silte (%) também apresentaram grau de dependência espacial moderado. A resistência à penetração, densidade do solo e de partículas, não apresentaram dependência espacial na escala de investigação adotada. Foi possível identificar regiões de maior aptidão agrícola verificando-se, através do mapeamento, que os solos francos tendem a apresentar elevada resistência à penetração e baixa condutividade hidráulica.

Soil physical and hydraulic characteristics are relevant for agricultural management, particularly at irrigation districts. The objective of this study was to evaluate the spatial variability of physical attributes of soil in an alluvial valley in the semiarid region of Pernambuco State, at the Ipanema River Watershed. Statistical techniques and geostatistics were applied to observe the degree of dependence and the spatial variability of soil physical properties, in plots adopted for communal agriculture. The coefficient of variation for the hydraulic conductivity was high, medium for soil resistance to root penetration and for sand, clay and silt. For bulk density, particle density and porosity, however, such coefficient was low. Spatial dependence structures were investigated, with ranges spanning from 135 m, for soil hydraulic conductivity, to 465 m, for silt content. Contour map was produced by kriging interpolation, representing the spatial variability of hydraulic conductivity, which showed moderate spatial dependence. Resistance to root penetration, soil density and particle distribution presented spatial random behavior, for the adopted spatial scale. It was possible to identify regions with higher agricultural potential. From the produced map, it was highlighted that loam soils usually present higher resistance to root penetration, and low hydraulic conductivity.

INTRODUÇÃO: Uma nova geração de próteses Amplatzer com menor perfil e maior flexibilidade foi desenvolvida recentemente para o tratamento percutâneo da persistência do canal arterial (PCA). Neste artigo é relatado o uso desse novo dispositivo, Amplatzer Duct Occludder II TM (ADO II), para o tratamento tanto de PCA como de outros defeitos congênitos e estruturais, avaliando sua eficácia e segurança. MÉTODOS: Estudo longitudinal observacional de uma coorte de pacientes portadores de cardiopatias congênitas e estruturais tratados com ADO II entre outubro de 2009 e agosto de 2011. Pacientes com menos de 5 kg e canais > 5,5 mm e/ou do tipo B foram excluídos do estudo. A prótese foi implantada por vias anterógrada ou retrógrada. A cintura foi cerca de 2 mm maior que o defeito e o comprimento da prótese foi de 4 mm para lesões mais curtas (até 6-8 mm). RESULTADOS: Foram incluídos no estudo 28 pacientes, com mediana de idade e de peso de 2 anos e 11,7 kg, respectivamente, dos quais 23 eram portadores de PCA com diâmetro mínimo de 2,3 + 0,8 mm. Os demais apresentavam comunicação interventricular muscular (1), fístula arteriovenosa pulmonar (1), aneurisma roto do seio de Valsalva (1), e coração univentricular em pós-operatório recente de cavopulmonar bidirecional com fluxo anterógrado pulmonar residual (2). Em todos os pacientes a prótese foi implantada com sucesso, com exceção de um lactente de 8 kg com canal arterial de 2,8 mm de diâmetro, de ampola rasa e de trajeto longo, tortuoso e oblíquo. Houve oclusão total dos defeitos em todos os pacientes. Um paciente portador de coração univentricular e isomerismo direito faleceu em decorrência de complicações não associadas ao procedimento. CONCLUSÕES: A prótese ADO II mostrou-se versátil, segura e eficaz no tratamento percutâneo de lactentes, crianças e adultos selecionados portadores de PCA e outras cardiopatias congênitas e estruturais. Sua aplicação pode ter limitações em algumas configurações anatômicas de PCA em lactentes menores.

BACKGROUND: A new generation of Amplatzer devices with lower profile and greater flexibility has been recently developed for percutaneous occlusion of the patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). In this paper, the use of this new device, the Amplatzer Duct Occludder II TM (ADO II) for percutaneous closure of the PDA as well as for the treatment of other congenital and structural heart defects is reported, assessing its safety and efficacy. METHODS: Longitudinal and observational study of a cohort of patients with congenital and structural heart defects treated with ADO II between October 2009 and August 2011. Patients weighing less than 5 kg and PDAs > 5.5 mm and/or type B were excluded. The device was implanted using the antegrade or retrograde approach. The waist was 2 mm larger than the defect and the length of the prosthesis was 4 mm for shorter lesions (less than 6-8 mm). RESULTS: Twenty-eight patients with a median age and weight of 2 years and 11.7 kg, respectively, were included. Twenty-three had a PDA with a mean minimal diameter of 2.3 + 0.8 mm. The remainder had muscular ventricular septal defect (1), pulmonary arteriovenous fistula (1), ruptured aneurysm of the sinus of Valsalva (1), and univentricular heart in the early postoperative period of bidirectional cavopulmonary anastomosis with residual antegrade pulmonary flow (2). The device was successfully implanted in all patients, except for an infant weighing 8 kg with a long, tortuous and oblique PDA with a diameter of 2.8 mm and a shallow ampulla. There was total occlusion of the defects in all patients. One patient with univentricular heart and right isomerism died due to complications not related to the procedure. CONCLUSIONS: ADO II proved to be a flexible, safe and effective device for the percutaneous treatment of infants, children and selected adults with PDA and other congenital and structural heart defects. Its use may have limitations for some anatomical PDA configurations in smaller infants.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de recipientes e composições de substratos na produção de mudas e da altura e intervalo de cortes na produção de melissa (Melissa officinalis L.) em estufa agrícola. No ensaio de mudas empregou-se o delineamento inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 5 x 4, com três repetições, onde se avaliou cinco composições de vermicomposto (V) e esterco bovino (E) (nas proporções 1V:0E, 2V:1E, 1V:1E, 1V:2E e 0V:1E) e quatro concentrações das composições no pó-de-coco (0; 20; 40 e 60%). No ensaio de altura e intervalo de corte utilizou-se o delineamento blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 4 x 2, com três repetições, em parcelas subdivididas. Nas parcelas foram colocados os quatro intervalos de colheita (8; 9; 10 e 11 semanas após a primeira colheita) e nas subparcelas altura de corte (5 e 10 cm). No ensaio de mudas a presença de vermicomposto nos substratos resultou em mudas vigorosas. Quando se usou 60% de vermicomposto e 40% de pó de coco observou-se maior sistema radicular, seguido pelo substrato 26,7% de vermicomposto, 13,3% de esterco bovino e 60% de pó de coco, que também proporcionou mudas mais altas. No ensaio de altura e intervalo de corte, o corte a 5 cm de altura diminuiu a sobrevivência de plantas rebrotadas e não influenciou o peso seco de folha por planta. A colheita da rebrota pode ser feita 11 semanas após o primeiro corte.

The effect of recipients and substrate compositions was evaluated on seedling production, the height of cutting and harvest interval on the production of lemon balm (Melissa officinalis L.) cultivated in greenhouse. For the transplants trial a randomized experimental design in factorial scheme 5 x 4 with three replications was used. Five compositions of vermicompost (V) and bovine manure (B) (1V:0B; 2V:1B; 1V:1B; 1V:2B; 0V:1B) and four concentrations of the compositions mixed with coconut dust (0; 20; 40; 60%). For the harvest interval essay a completely randomized block experimental design was used, in a 4 x 2 factorial scheme with three replications using the split plot model. In the plots four harvest intervals (every 8; 9; 10 and 11 weeks) and in the split-plots two cutting heights (5 and 10 cm) were evaluated. In the seedling essay the presence of vermicompost on the substrate composition resulted in vigorous transplants. Better root system was observed in treatments using 60% of vermicompost and 40% of coconut dust followed by the substrate composed of 26.7% of vermicompost, 13.3% of bovine manure and 60% of coconut dust, which also proportioned highest plant height. In the regrowth essay the cutting at 5 cm of height resulted in a reduction of plant survival, and this fact did not affect the dry matter of leaves per plant. Harvesting of regrowth plants can be carried out eleven weeks after the first cutting.

A adesão de Listeria innocua L6a e de Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 foi avaliada em cupons de prova de aço inoxidável AISI 304, de policarbonato, ambos com dimensões de 10x10x1mm, e de polipropileno com dimensões de 10x10x4mm. Os cupons limpos e esterilizados foram imersos em 100mL de caldo TSB ou de BHI, contendo cerca de 1,0x10³ UFC/ml de L. innocua ou de S. aureus, respectivamente, e incubados a 30ºC. Após 0,2,4,6,8,10 e 12horas, os cupons foram retirados e imersos em tampão fosfato (0,31M e pH=7,2), durante 1 minuto, para remoção de células planctônicas; em seguida, submetidos à determinação do número de células aderidas pelas técnicas da microscopia de epifluorescência (MEP) e da contagem-padrão em placas após vórtex (CPP). Para MEP, os cupons foram imersos em solução de Kirkpatrick durante 3 minutos para fixar as células às superfícies. Posteriormente, as células foram coradas com alaranjado de acridina durante 5 minutos, e enumeradas pela MEP, em objetiva de imersão com área de 0,0226mm². Para CPP, os cupons foram imersos em 2mL de tampão fosfato, submetidos ao vórtex, durante 1 minuto, para remoção das células sésseis, e, em seguida, foram efetuadas as contagens, usando-se ágar BHI ou TSB e incubação a 30ºC por 48horas. Os resultados, tanto para MEP quanto para CPP, foram expressos em UFC/cm². Para a técnica de MEP, constatou-se diferença significativa (p<0,05) quando se avaliaram as interações entre os microrganismos, as superfícies e os tempos de contato. Verificou-se que o número de células aderidas aumentou com o tempo de contato, para todas as superfícies, independente do microorganismo. A CPP mostrou-se mais sensível para detectar números baixos de células aderidas às superfícies. No entanto, de forma geral, as contagens bacterianas obtidas pela CPP eram menores do que aquelas obtidas pela MEP. Pode-se afirmar que a MEP foi a técnica mais adequada para quantificar a adesão bacteriana, principalmente, quando o número de células aderidas às superfícies, observadas nos campos microscópicos, encontrava-se entre 10 e 100.

The adherence of Listeria inoccua L6a and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC6538 was evaluated on stainless steel (SS), polycarbonate (PC) and polypropylene (PP) chips. The EP results showed a significant difference (p<0.05) among the microorganism species interactions, the surfaces and the contact time. The number of adhered cells on the chip surfaces increased as contact time increased and the number of L. innocua or S. aureus on the surface of SS, PC and PP chips reached 1.0x10(5) CFU/cm² after 12 h of contact, in both methods. The CP method showed a better sensitivity to detect low number of adhered cells. The EP was better when the average number of adhered cells was between 10 and 100 per microscopy field.
