ABSTRACT: In the last decade, there has been a significant increase in the demand for small rodents such as hamsters, guinea pigs, rats, and mice to be kept as pets. Consequently, the veterinary care provided to these animals has also increased. The aim of this study was to describe gross, histopathological and immunohistochemical findings of 26 spontaneous neoplasms diagnosed in 25 pet rodents in Northeastern Brazil. A retrospective study was carried out from 2014 to 2022 in two veterinary diagnostic laboratories to identify cases of tumoriform lesions in these species. Hamsters represented the most frequent species in this study (60%, 15/25), followed by rats (28%, 7/25), guinea pigs (8%, 2/25), and mice (4%, 1/25), with a mean age of 17.63 months. The anatomical regions of the face/head and thoracic region were the most affected. The most affected tissues were the skin/subcutaneous/mucosal (65%, 15/26) and mammary gland (23%, 6/26). Eighteen different types of neoplasms were diagnosed, and T-cell lymphomas and mammary adenocarcinomas were the most diagnosed tumors, each corresponding to 12% (3/26) of the cases. Leiomyosarcoma, myxosarcoma and mammary adenocarcinoma metastases were also noted. Immunohistochemistry was essential for the diagnosis of certain malignant mesenchymal and round-cell neoplasms. Pet rodent neoplasms in Northeastern Brazil are common, especially in hamsters, and immunohistochemistry can be a useful tool for the definitive diagnosis of these tumors. RESUMO: Este estudo teve como objetivo relatar um leiomiossarcoma associado a abdome agudo e torção uterina em uma cateta (Tayassu tajacu) de oito anos, nulípara, mantida sob cuidados humanos. O animal apresentou uma história clínica de dois dias de aumento de volume abdominal, secreção vaginal e abdome agudo. Achados de ultrassonografia indicaram um tumor intrabdominal, e uma laparotomia exploratória seguida de ovariohisterectomia de emergência foi realizada para remover o tumor. Macroscopicamente, o corno direito do útero exibia um tumor firme, friável medindo 23cm de diâmetro e pesava 9,3kg. Na superfície de corte, o tumor drenava um fluido de odor fétido e conteúdo sanguinolento. A parede do tumor tinha 6cm de espessura, era de cor vermelha escura e firme, e apresentava um material fibrilar amarelo, friável e macio aderido firmemente à sua superfície. Microscopicamente, a lesão consistia em proliferação maligna dos leiomiócitos acompanhada de necrose e hemorragia difusas de endométrio e miométrio. O citoplasma das células neoplásicas foi fortemente imunopositivo para vimentina e actina de músculo liso e negativo para citoqueratina e desmina. Leiomiossarcomas são raros em Tayassuidae e sua apresentação clinicopatológica pode ser concomitante com abdome agudo, torção uterina e piometra. Essas condições devem ser incluídas no diagnóstico diferencial de doenças reprodutivas observadas em catetas. ABSTRACT: This study aimed to report a leiomyosarcoma associated with acute abdomen and uterine torsion in an 8-year-old, nulliparous, white-collared peccary (Tayassu tajacu) kept under human care. The animal presented a two-day clinical history of abdominal bulging, vaginal discharge, and acute abdomen. Ultrasound findings indicated an intrabdominal tumor, and an exploratory laparotomy followed by an emergency ovariohysterectomy was performed to remove the tumor. Grossly, the right horn exhibited a firm, friable tumor measuring 23cm in diameter and weighing 9.3kg. On the cut surface, the tumor drained a foul-smelling fluid and bloody content. The tumor wall was 6cm thick, dark red, firm, and had a brittle, soft, yellow fibrillar material firmly adhered to its surface. Microscopically, the lesion consisted of malignant proliferation of leiomyocytes with necrosis and hemorrhage of the endometrium and myometrium. The cytoplasm of the neoplastic cells was strongly immunopositive for vimentin and smooth muscle actin but negative for cytokeratin and desmin. Leiomyosarcoma is uncommon in Tayassuidae, and its clinicopathological presentation may be concomitant with acute abdomen, uterine torsion, and pyometra. These conditions should be included in the differential diagnosis of reproductive diseases observed in female peccaries. Abstract The iAtlantic Project has established an international collaborative strategy to improve mapping and characterization of deep and open ocean ecosystems in understudied regions of the Atlantic and evaluate their health. In December 2022, the first iAtlantic expedition in the South Atlantic set off to map and explore seafloor ecosystems in the Santos Basin slope (200-1,000 m depths) in collaboration with the Petrobras ‘Santos Basin - Regional Characterization Project.’ The 17-day ‘iAtlantic_BR10-Petrobras’ cruise was conducted on board the research vessel NPqHOc Vital de Oliveira (Brazilian Navy) and performed (a) water column structure characterization, (b) seafloor morphology mapping, (c) description of benthic habitats and communities by seafloor imagery and biological/ geological sampling, and (d) ex-situ experiments to assess the functioning of sedimentary ecosystems and their responses to climate-related environmental changes. RESUMO: Lesões por queimaduras térmicas são ocorrências muito incomuns em pequenos ruminantes no mundo e no Brasil não há registros da ocorrência desta condição. Descreve-se um surto de necrose térmica dorsal em um rebanho de ovinos no município de Boca da Mata, Zona da Mata do Estado de Alagoas, Nordeste do Brasil. Doze ovelhas foram separadas do rebanho para realização de exame clínico geral e avaliação dos níveis séricos de uréia, creatinina,gama-glutamiltransferase e aspartato aminotransferase. Adicionalmente, biópsias de pele e fígado foram realizadas em duas ovelhas severamente afetadas. O rebanho era criado sob manejo semi-intensivo em uma área de pastagem sem sombreamento e recebiam aproximadamente oito horas de insolação diárias. Essas ovelhas desenvolveram dermatite severa que evoluiu para necrose da pele dorsal. Macroscopicamente, as lesões foram observadas apenas na pele dorsal de ovelhas negras, enquanto ovelhas com áreas dorsais brancas da pele não foram afetadas. Microscopicamente, a epiderme e a derme profunda das ovelhas afetadas apresentavam necrose coagulativa difusa, além de incontinência pigmentar e hiperqueratose paraqueratótica. A necrose térmica dorsal ocorre apenas na pele dorsal de ovelhas negras em situações de exposição excessiva à luz solar devido ao acúmulo de radiação ultravioleta. A distribuição das lesões, restrita à região dorsal da pele, é um importante aspecto clínico-patológico nesses casos que pode auxiliar na diferenciação das lesões causadas por fotossensibilização, pois geralmente envolvem outros sítios anatômicos. Este é o primeiro relato de necrose térmica dorsal em ovinos no Brasil. ABSTRACT: Thermal burn injuries are very uncommon occurrences in small ruminants worldwide, and in Brazil, there are no descriptions of this condition. Herein we describe an outbreak of dorsal thermal necrosis in a flock of sheep in the municipality of Boca da Mata, in the Forest Zone of the State of Alagoas, Northeastern Brazil. Twelve ewes were separated from the flock for a general clinical examination and evaluation the serum levels of urea, creatinine, gamma-glutamyltransferase, and aspartate aminotransferase. In addition, biopsies of the skin and liver were performed on two severely affected sheep. The flock was raised in semi-intensively management in a pasture area without shading and receiving approximately eight hours of insolation daily and developed severe dermatitis that evolved to severe necrosis of the dorsal skin. Grossly, these lesions were only observed in the dorsal skin of black sheep, while sheep with white dorsal areas of skin were not affected. Microscopically, the epidermis and deep dermis of affected sheep showed diffuse coagulative necrosis, pigmentary incontinence, and parakeratotic hyperkeratosis. Dorsal thermal necrosis occurs only in the dorsal skin of black sheep in situations of excessive exposure to sunlight due to the accumulation of ultraviolet radiation. The distribution of the lesions, restricted to the dorsal area of the skin, is an important clinicopathological aspect in these cases that can help differentiate lesions caused by photosensitization, as they usually involve other anatomical sites. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first report of dorsal thermal necrosis in sheep in Brazil. RESUMO: São descritos os achados anátomo e histopatológicos da necrose gordurosa perirrenal em um cervo sambar (Rusa unicolor) fêmea de seis anos de idade que foi necropsiado após apresentar severa apatia, perda de peso, decúbito permanente e morte. Durante a necropsia foram observadas duas grandes massas brancas a amarelas, duras, irregulares e encapsuladas envolvendo ambos os rins. Microscopicamente, essas massas consistiam em áreas de necrose multifocais a coalescentes do tecido adiposo perirrenal, com infiltrado difuso de linfócitos, macrófagos e ocasionais plasmócitos e células gigantes multinucleadas. Multifocalmente, as áreas necróticas estavam substituídas por mineralização e fibrose. A compressão dessas massas no córtex renal foi associada à degeneração tubular renal leve a mínima. A condição descrita não foi relatada em veados e os mecanismos exatos de desenvolvimento da necrose da gordura perirrenal ainda precisam ser determinados. Necrose gordurosa maciça foi relatada em outras espécies de animais, como caninos, felinos, suínos, caprinos, bovinos e baleias (Balaena mysticetus). Geralmente é um achado incidental durante o exame post-mortem que precisa ser diferenciado de neoplasias originárias do tecido adiposo, rins e adrenais, e distúrbios decorrentes de pancreatite e obesidade. ABSTRACT: The gross and histopathological findings of perirenal fat necrosis in a sambar deer (Rusa unicolor) are described in a 6-year-old female deer that was necropsied after showing severe apathy, weight loss, recumbency, and death. At post-mortem examination, two large white to yellow, irregular, and encapsulated masses involving both kidneys were observed. Microscopically, these masses consisted of fat tissue presenting multifocal to coalescing areas of necrosis, diffuse infiltration of lymphocytes, macrophages, occasional plasma cells, and multinucleated giant cells. Multifocally, the necrotic sites were replaced by mineralization and fibrosis. The described condition has not been reported in deer and the exact mechanisms of development of perirenal fat necrosis remain to be determined. Massive fat necrosis has been reported in other animal species such as dogs, cats, pigs, goats, cattle, and whales (Balaena mysticetus). It is usually an incidental finding during post-mortem examination that needs to be differentiated from neoplasms originating from the adipose tissue, kidneys and adrenals, and disorders resulting from pancreatitis and obesity. RESUMO: Descrevem-se os aspectos clínicos, patológicos e reprodutivos de um surto de deficiência de cobre em cabras leiteiras e em cabritos da região semiárida de Pernambuco, Brasil. Dez cabras leiteiras adultas com sinais clínicos de deficiência de cobre e quatro cabritos com ataxia enzoótica nascidos dessas cabras foram separados do rebanho e examinados. Nas cabras leiteiras, a concentração média de cobre sérico foi de 6,1±2,8mmol/L e a concentração média de ferro sérico foi de 39,5±8,2mmol/L. Nos cabritos, a concentração média de cobre sérico foi de 3,8±0,9mmol/L e a concentração média de ferro sérico foi de 38,5±4,1mmol/L. Os sinais clínicos nas cabras consistiram em mucosas pálidas, anemia, diarreia, acromotriquia, pelos opacos e quebradiços e alopecia. As principais alterações reprodutivas consistiram em anestro prolongado, reabsorção embrionária e aumento da taxa de retenção de placenta. Os cabritos nascidos vivos dessas cabras nasceram fracos, com ataxia neonatal ou desenvolveram ataxia tardia em até 70 dias de vida. Seis cabras leiteiras e quatro cabritos foram necropsiados. Nas cabras, a maioria dos ovários examinados macroscopicamente eram pequenos, firmes e não apresentavam folículos viáveis em sua superfície. Microscopicamente, houve redução de folículos viáveis, além de desorganização das estruturas foliculares, com marcada atresia folicular. Macroscopicamente não foram observadas alterações nos cabritos com ataxia enzoótica. As lesões histológicas observadas nesses cabritos consistiram em cromatólise neuronal e degeneração axonal, principalmente em neurônios da medula espinhal. Neste estudo a fonte dos altos teores de ferro no soro não foi identificada, mas sabe-se que surtos de deficiência de cobre podem ocorrer devido ao excesso de ingestão de ferro, principalmente quando não é fornecida suplementação mineral adequada para os rebanhos caprinos.

ABSTRACT: The clinical, pathological and reproductive aspects of an outbreak of copper deficiency in dairy goats and kids from the semiarid region of Pernambuco, Brazil are described. Ten adult dairy goats with clinical signs of deficiency and four kids presenting enzootic ataxia born from copper deficient does were separated from the herd, and examined. In the dairy goats, the average serum concentration of copper was 6.1±2.8mmol/L and iron was 39.5±8.2mmol/L. In kids, the average serum concentration of copper was 3.8±0.9mmol/L and iron was 38.5±4.1mmol/L. Clinical signs in dairy goats consisted of pale mucous membranes, anemia, emaciation, diarrhea, achromotrichia, brittle hair and alopecia. The main reproductive alterations consisted of prolonged anestrus, embryonic resorption and high indices of retained placenta. The kids born from copper deficient dairy goats were weak, and presented neonatal or late ataxia until 70 days of life. Six dairy goats and four kids were necropsied. Most ovaries examined were small, firm and did not present viable follicles on their surface. Microscopically, there was reduction of viable follicles in addition to disorganization of follicular and stromal structures, with marked follicular atresia. Microscopically, changes in kids with enzootic ataxia consisted of neuronal chromatolysis and axonal degeneration, mainly in neurons of the spinal cord. In this study, the source of high iron was not identified, but it is known that outbreaks of copper deficiency can occur due to excess iron intake, mainly when adequate mineral supplementation is not provided for the goat herds.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo determinar as concentrações séricas de Na, K e Cl, além das concentrações salivares de Na e K em ovinos criados em uma região semiárida do Nordeste do Brasil e relatar a epidemiologia e os aspectos clínicos e patológicos de um surto de hiponatremia severa em ovinos. Para isso, amostras de soro e saliva de 55 ovinos foram coletadas em 6 diferentes fazendas da região. As concentrações de Na, K e Cl foram determinadas por teste colorimétrico, utilizando kits comerciais em analisador bioquímico semiautomático. As concentrações séricas médias variaram de 131,5±13,1mEq/L a 172,4±9,3mEq/L para Na, 6,28±1,3mEq/L a 13,9±1,4mEq/L para K e 91,6±54,8mEq/L a 113,6±1,5mEq/L para Cl. As concentrações salivares médias variaram de 119,4±9,5mEq/L a 161,8±15,2mEq/L para Na, 10,1±3,1mEq/L a 22,3±2,3mEq/L para K, e a razão Na: K variou de 6,0±1,3mEq/L a 11,8±4,1mEq/L. Esses resultados revelaram que a maioria dos ovinos criados nas fazendas desta região são marginalmente sódio deficientes. Em uma fazenda, os ovinos apresentavam um quadro clínico grave de deficiência de Na. Os principais sinais clínicos consistiam em apatia, avidez por sal, polidipsia, poliúria, tosse seca, inapetência, pica, fraqueza, dificuldade de se levantar e se locomover, emagrecimento e desidratação. À necropsia, o conteúdo ruminal estava geralmente compactado, dando ao conteúdo um aspecto de bolas de argila. Quatro ovelhas apresentaram hipertrofia das glândulas adrenais. Histopatologicamente, a zona glomerulosa apresentava-se espessa, com perda da arquitetura e desarranjo dos cordões celulares. As células epiteliais da zona glomerulosa e fasciculada eram piramidais, apresentavam citoplasma hipereosinofílico e continham núcleos hipercromáticos. Esses dados demonstram a ocorrência de deficiência de Na em diferentes graus em criações de ovinos no Estado de Pernambuco e evidencia a importância do fornecimento de NaCl para a prevenção de surtos de hiponatremia.

ABSTRACT: Mineral deficiencies are important causes of productive losses in ruminant farming, especially in semiarid regions. This study aimed to determine Na, K, and Cl serum concentrations, plus the salivary concentrations of Na and K in sheep raised in a semiarid region of Northeastern Brazil, and to report the epidemiology, clinical and the pathological aspects of an outbreak of hyponatremia in sheep. For this, serum and salivary samples of 55 sheep were collected in 6 different farms in the region. Na, K, and Cl concentrations were determined by colorimetric test, using commercial kits in a semi-automatic biochemical analyzer. The mean serum concentrations ranged from 131.5±13.1mEq/L to 172.4±9.3mEq/L for Na, 6.28±1.3mEq/L to 13.9±1.4mEq/L for K, and 91.6±54.8mEq/L to 113.6±1.5mEq/L for Cl. The mean salivary concentrations ranged from 119.4±9.5mEq/L to 161.8±15.2mEq/L for Na, 10.1±3.1mEq/L to 22.3±2.3mEq/L for K, and the ratio Na:K ranged from 6.0±1.3mEq/L to 11.8±4.1mEq/L. These results revealed that most sheep raised in the farms in this region are marginally depleted in sodium. In one farm, sheep had severe clinical signs of Na deficiency consisting of haggard appearance, craving for salt, polydipsia, polyuria, dry cough, inappetence, pica, weakness, difficulty to rise and move, severe emaciation, and dehydration. On autopsy, the ruminal content was generally impacted, giving to the content an aspect of clay balls. Four sheep presented hypertrophy of the adrenal glands. Histopathologically, the width of the zona glomerulosa was expanded, there was loss of the architecture and loss of adrenocortical cell cords. The epithelial cells in the zona glomerulosa and fasciculata were pyramidal, and contained hypereosinophilic cytoplasm and hyperchromatic nuclei. These data demonstrate the occurrence of Na deficiency in different degrees in sheep farms in the State of Pernambuco and highlight the importance of providing NaCl to avoid outbreaks of hyponatremia.

RESUMO: Descrevem-se casos de periodontite em ovinos provenientes das regiões do Agreste e Zona da Mata de Pernambuco, Nordeste do Brasil. Informações sobre raça, idade e sexo dos animais afetados bem como os aspectos clínicos e patológicos dos surtos foram obtidos a partir de visitas às propriedades e são reportados. 15 animais de um total de 450 ovinos da raça Santa Inês, com idade entre três a doze anos de idade manifestaram baixa condição corporal, pelagem sem brilho e dificuldade de alimentar-se, acompanhado de dor à palpação na região mandibular. O exame físico da cavidade oral dos animais afetados e os achados post mortem de indivíduos abatidos revelaram graus variados de periodontite, desgaste, fratura, mobilidade e perda dentária, associados a retração gengival, presença de biofilme e compactação de resíduos alimentares entre os dentes incisivos, pré-molares e molares. Em oito animais havia aumento de volume mandibular e em dois deles observaram-se abscessos fistulados que ocorreram exclusivamente nos dentes mandibulares. A ocorrência de periodontite em ovinos não têm sido registrada no Nordeste do Brasil, sendo estes os primeiros casos descritos na região.

ABSTRACT: Cases of periodontitis in sheep from the Agreste and Zona da Mata regions of Pernambuco, Northeastern Brazil, are described. Information on breed, age and sex of affected animals as well as clinical and pathological aspects of the disease were obtained during farm visits. Fifteen animals from a total of 450 Santa Inês sheep, aged between three and twelve years, showed low body condition score, dull coat, and difficulty in feeding followed by pain on palpation of the mandibular region. Physical examination of the oral cavity of affected animals and post mortem findings of slaughtered individuals revealed varying degrees of periodontitis, wear, fracture, mobility, and loss of teeth associated with gingival retraction, presence of biofilm and food packing between incisors, premolars and molars teeth. Increased mandibular volume was observed in eight animals and, in two of them, an abscess fistula, exclusively in mandibular teeth. The occurrence of periodontitis in sheep had not been recorded until now in Northeastern Brazil and, thus, this is the first description of cases in the region.

RESUMO: O exantema coital equino é uma doença infecciosa venérea pouco relatada em equinos no Brasil e nunca descrita na região Nordeste do país. Este trabalho tem como objetivo descrever os aspectos clínicos e patológicos de um surto de exantema coital equino causado pelo alphaherpesvirus equídeo 3, que ocorreu em um haras na região semiárida do Estado do Rio Grande do Norte. Os principais sinais clínicos consistiram em anorexia, hiporexia, secreção fibrinosa ou purulenta na mucosa do pênis e vagina. Duas éguas apresentavam lesões discretas que consistiam em cicatrizes na mucosa da vagina e na região perivulvar. Em um garanhão, a doença consistia em úlceras umbilicadas-exantematosas severas, multifocais, de aproximadamente 1 cm de diâmetro na mucosa do pênis. Outras áreas onde úlceras e crostas foram observadas focalmente incluíram a pele do escroto, lábios e junções mucocutâneas da cavidade oral. Histologicamente, as principais lesões consistiam em balanopostite multifocal ulcerativa e necrosante fibrinosa grave e dermatite linfocítica necrosante multifocal leve nos lábios e escroto. O DNA do alphaherpesvirus equídeo tipo 3 foi amplificado em amostras de sangue e mucosa do pênis pela técnica de PCR. Este é o primeiro relato de diagnóstico molecular de exantema coital equino afetando cavalos no nordeste do Brasil. Novos estudos devem ser realizados a fim de investigar a epidemiologia e a importância dessa doença herpética no país.

ABSTRACT: Equine coital exanthema is a venereal infectious disease poorly reported in horses in Brazil and was never described in the northeastern region of the country. This work aims to describe the clinical and pathological aspects of an outbreak of equine coital exanthema caused by equid alphaherpesvirus 3, occurred in a herd of horses at the semiarid region of the State of Rio Grande do Norte. Main clinical signs consisted of anorexia, hiporexia, fibrinous or purulent secretion in the penis mucosa and vagina. Two mares presented mild to minimal lesions that consisted of scars in the mucosa of the vagina and in the perivulvar region. In a stallion the disease consisted of severe, multifocal, umbilicated-exanthematous ulcers of approximately 1cm in diameter on the penis mucosa. Other areas where ulcers and crusts were focally observed included the skin of the scrotum and on the lips and mucocutaneous junctions of the oral cavity. Histologically, the main lesion consisted of multifocal severe ulcerative and fibrinous necrotizing balanoposthitis and mild multifocal necrotizing, lymphocytic dermatitis in the lips and scrotum. The equide alphaherpesvirus 3 DNA was amplified in blood samples and penis mucosa using the PCR technique. This is the first report of molecular diagnosis of equine coital exanthema affecting horses in northeastern Brazil. Further studies should be carried out in order to investigate the epidemiology and the importance of this herpetic disease in the country.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of sympathectomy on the myocardium in an experimental model. METHODS: The study evaluated three groups of male Wistar rats: control (CT; n=15), left unilateral sympathectomy (UNI; n=15), and bilateral sympathectomy (BIL; n=31). Sympathectomy was performed by injection of absolute alcohol into the space of the spinous process of the C7 vertebra. After 6 weeks, we assessed the chronotropic properties at rest and stress, cardiovascular autonomic modulation, myocardial and peripheral catecholamines, and beta-adrenergic receptors in the myocardium. The treadmill test consisted of an escalated protocol with a velocity increment until the maximal velocity tolerated by the animal was reached. RESULTS: The bilateral group had higher levels of peripheral catecholamines, and consequently, a higher heart rate (HR) and blood pressure levels. This suggests that the activation of a compensatory pathway in this group may have deleterious effects. The BIL group had basal tachycardia immediately before the exercise test and increased tachycardia at peak exercise (p<0.01); the blood pressure had the same pattern (p=0.0365). The variables related to autonomic modulation were not significantly different between groups, with the exception of the high frequency (HF) variable, which showed significant differences in CT vs UNI. There was no significant difference in beta receptor expression between groups. There was a higher concentration of peripheral norepinephrine in the BIL group (p=0.0001), and no significant difference in myocardial norepinephrine (p=0.09). CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that an extra cardiac compensatory pathway increases the sympathetic tonus and maintains a higher HR and higher levels of peripheral catecholamines in the procedure groups. The increase in HF activity can be interpreted as an attempt to increase the parasympathetic tonus to balance the greater sympathetic activity.

RESUMO: Neste estudo prospectivo, realizou-se um levantamento sobre a ocorrência das principais plantas tóxicas e a ocorrência de intoxicações por plantas em ruminantes na bacia leiteira de Pernambuco. Para isso, foram entrevistados 95 produtores rurais de 19 municípios e as áreas de pastagem de ruminantes foram inspecionadas. De acordo com o levantamento, as plantas tóxicas mais importantes para ruminantes foram Manihot esculenta, Palicourea aeneofusca, Brachiaria decumbens, Indigofera suffruticosa e Ricinus communis. As classes menos importantes de plantas tóxicas incluíram plantas nefrotóxicas e plantas que causam abortos e malformações congênitas. Psychotria hoffmannseggiana, Psychotria colorata e Psychotria capitata foram relatadas por produtores rurais como a causa de mortes súbitas em bovinos. Essas plantas devem ser investigadas melhor para avaliar sua importância como a causa de mortes de bovinos.

ABSTRACT: A survey carried out in the dairy region of Pernambuco was conducted to determine the most important poisonous plants for ruminants in the region. A total of 95 farmers from 19 municipalities were interviewed and the grazing areas of ruminants were inspected. According to the survey, the most important poisonous plants for ruminants were Manihot esculenta, Palicourea aeneofusca, Brachiaria decumbens, Indigofera suffruticosa, Ricinus communis and Cestrum axillare. Less reported classes of poisonous plants included nephrotoxic plants and plants that cause abortions or congenic malformations. Psychotria hoffmannseggiana, Psychotria colorata and Psychotria capitata were reported by farmers as the cause of sudden death in cattle. These plants should be better investigated to evaluate their importance as the cause of cattle deaths.

RESUMO: A doença de Glässer é uma importante enfermidade infecciosa de suínos causada pela bactéria Haemophilus parasuis. Embora bem reconhecida na maioria das regiões do Brasil, surtos de doença de Glässer não têm sido descritos na região Nordeste. Por este motivo, três regiões do Estado de Pernambuco foram visitadas com o objetivo de se identificar históricos de alta mortalidade em leitões e suínos em fase de terminação. Nove suínos foram necropsiados e fragmentos do sistema nervoso, órgãos das cavidades abdominal e torácica foram coletados para análise histopatológica. Além disso, fragmentos de pulmão e cérebro foram utilizados para extração de DNA e realização de teste molecular por meio da Reação em Cadeia da Polimerase (PCR) em tempo real. Os principais sinais clínicos consistiram em tosse seca, apatia, febre, anorexia, paresia, tremores musculares, incoordenação motora e convulsões levando a altas taxas de mortalidade. As lesões macroscópicas mais severas consistiam em petéquias e equimoses na pele da face, abdome, membros anteriores e posteriores, além de hidropericárdio, hemopericárdio, pericardite fibrinosa e pleuropneumonia. Microscopicamente, pericardite, epicardite e miocardite subepicárdica, seguidas de pleuropneumonia multifocal moderada a grave, fibrino-supurativa e necrosante foram as lesões mais frequentes observadas. A PCR em tempo real amplificou o gene infB de H. parasuis em todas as amostras analisadas, confirmando a presença deste agente etiológico.

ABSTRACT: Glässer’s disease is an important infectious disorder of swine caused by Haemophilus parasuis. Although well recognized in most regions of Brazil, outbreaks of Glässer’s disease have not been described in Northeastern region. For this reason, three municipalities of the Pernambuco State were visited in order to identify histories of high mortality in growing and finishing pigs. The main clinical signs consisted of dry cough, apathy, fever, anorexia, paresis, muscle tremors, motor incoordination, seizures leading to high mortality rates. Nine pigs were necropsied, and fragments of the nervous system, organs of the abdominal and thoracic cavities were collected for histological analysis. In addition, lung and brain fragments were used for DNA extraction and molecular testing by real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Grossly, the main lesions consisted of petechial hemorrhages or ecchymosis on the skin of the face, abdomen, forelimbs, and hind limbs. The main severe lesions consisted of hydropericardium, hemopericardium, fibrinous pericarditis and pleuropneumonia. Microscopically, pericarditis, epicarditis and subepicardial myocarditis, followed by a moderate to severe multifocal pleuropneumonia, fibrinosuppurative and necrotizing were the most frequent lesions observed. Real-time PCR amplified H. parasuis infB gene in all samples analyzed, confirming the presence of this etiologic agent.

RESUMO: Dermatite digital bovina (DDB) é uma enfermidade polibacteriana dos dígitos endêmica em vacas leiteiras criadas em estábulos e as treponemas são as principais bactérias envolvidas. Este estudo teve como objetivo relatar a ocorrência de Treponema spp. em DDB em bovinos leiteiros mestiços (Holandês x Zebu) criados a pasto no bioma amazônico brasileiro. O diagnóstico da DDB foi realizado pela inspeção, em uma ou mais visitas, das extremidades distais das vacas durante a ordenha em 15 propriedades. No total, foram inspecionadas 1.847 vacas de agosto de 2016 a julho de 2017 e diagnosticou-se 25 lesões de DDB. As extremidades distais inspecionadas foram classificadas em escores (M0 = sem lesão, M1 = estágio ulcerado <2cm, M2 = estágio ulcerado >2cm, M3 = estágio em cicatrização, M4 = estágio crônico, M4.1 = estágio crônico com área ulcerada) e realizada 24 biópsias de dígitos com DDB e cinco biópsias de dígitos em estágio M0. Foram realizadas a histopatologia pelas colorações de hematoxilina e eosina e pelo método de Warthin-Starry, e a nested de reação em cadeia de polimerase (nested-PCR) para os três filogrupos de treponemas previamente isolados de DDB (Treponema medium/T. vincentii-like, T. phagedenis-like e T. putidum/T. denticola-like). Espiroquetas foram observadas em 54,2% (13/24) das lesões e em 91,7% (22/24) detectou-se o DNA de, pelo menos, um dos filogrupos de treponemas pesquisados. Em 25% (6/24) das lesões foram detectados o DNA dos três filogrupos. Em 40% (2/5) das amostras em estágio M0 também foram positivas na nested-PCR, assim como 8,3% (2/24) das lesões foram negativas em ambas as técnicas empregadas. T. putidum/T. denticola-like foi o filogrupo mais detectado em todos os estágios e lesões ativas (M2 e M4.1) apresentaram uma maior proporção para Treponema medium/T. vincentii-like e T. phagedenis-like, mas não se obteve diferença estatística na ocorrência dos filogrupos entre os estágios das lesões (P>0,05). Conclui-se que lesões de DDB em rebanhos leiteiros mestiços criados a pasto no bioma amazônico brasileiro são “politreponemais” e o filogrupo T. putidum/T. denticola-like é o mais frequente nas lesões.

ABSTRACT: Bovine digital dermatitis (BDD) is a polybacterial claw disease that is endemic to dairy cattle kept in loose house systems, and treponemas are the main bacteria implicated in this disease. The objective of this study was to report the occurrence of Treponema spp. in BDD from crossbred dairy cattle (Holstein x Zebu) kept in a pasture in the Brazilian Amazon biome. The diagnostic of BDD was performed by inspecting the distal extremities of cattle during milking in one or more visits comprising 15 farms. In total, it could be inspected 1,847 cows from August 2016 to July 2017, and 25 lesions of BDD were diagnosed. The feet were scored (System M: M0 = no lesion, M1 = ulcer stage <2cm, M2 = ulcer stage >2cm, M3 = healing stage, M4 = chronic stage, M4.1 = chronic stage with ulcer area). Twenty four biopsy samples were taken from feet with BDD and five biopsy samples from feet with no lesions. The histopathology of stained tissues was performed by hematoxylin and eosin and Warthin-Starry method. The samples were also tested by nested PCR for the three previously isolated BDD Treponema phylogroups (T. medium/T. vincentii-like, T. phagedenis-like and T. putidum/T. denticola-like). Spirochetes were observed in 54.2% (13/24) of the lesions, and in 91.7% (22/24) of the samples were detected the DNA of this spirochete belonging to the treponema phylogroups implicated in BDD. In 25% (6/24) of the lesions were detected all the phylogroups. Forty percent (40%, 2/5) of the M0 samples were also positive for the nested Polymerase Chain Reaction (nested-PCR), as 8.3% (2/24) of the lesions were negative in both techniques employed. Treponema putidum/T. denticola-like was the most detected bacterial in all the stages, and active lesions (M2 and M4.1) presented a greater proportion of T. medium/T. vincentii-like and T. phagedenis-like, but no statistical differences were observed (p>0.05). It could be concluded that BDD lesions in crossbred dairy cattle kept to pasture in the Amazon biome were classified as “polytreponemal” infections and the phylogroup T. putidum/T. denticola-like was the most frequent in the lesions.

Hypertension is characterized by a pro-inflammatory status, including redox imbalance and increased levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, which may be exacerbated after heat exposure. However, the effects of heat exposure, specifically in individuals with inflammatory chronic diseases such as hypertension, are complex and not well understood. This study compared the effects of heat exposure on plasma cytokine levels and redox status parameters in 8 hypertensive (H) and 8 normotensive (N) subjects (age: 46.5±1.3 and 45.6±1.4 years old, body mass index: 25.8±0.8 and 25.6±0.6 kg/m2, mean arterial pressure: 98.0±2.8 and 86.0±2.3 mmHg, respectively). They remained at rest in a sitting position for 10 min in a thermoneutral environment (22°C) followed by 30 min in a heated environmental chamber (38°C and 60% relative humidity). Blood samples were collected before and after heat exposure. Plasma cytokine levels were measured using sandwich ELISA kits. Plasma redox status was determined by thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) levels and ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP). Hypertensive subjects showed higher plasma levels of IL-10 at baseline (P<0.05), although levels of this cytokine were similar between groups after heat exposure. Moreover, after heat exposure, hypertensive individuals showed higher plasma levels of soluble TNF receptor (sTNFR1) and lower TBARS (P<0.01) and FRAP (P<0.05) levels. Controlled hypertensive subjects, who use angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitor (ACE inhibitors), present an anti-inflammatory status and balanced redox status. Nevertheless, exposure to a heat stress condition seems to cause an imbalance in the redox status and an unregulated inflammatory response.
