RESUMO Nelore é a segunda maior raça bovina do mundo e tem participado ativamente da expansão das novas fronteiras agrícolas brasileiras. Nesse contexto, o objetivo do presente estudo foi determinar os intervalos de referência hematológicos e bioquímicos de matrizes Nelore criadas em regime extensivo sem suplementação, ao longo do sudoeste do estado do Piauí. Amostras de sangue foram coletadas de 55 fêmeas multíparas da raça Nelore. Os parâmetros bioquímicos e hematológicos foram analisados por método estatístico paramétrico com IC 95% para os limites de referência. Os valores médios de hemácias, hemoglobina e índices hematimétricos apresentaram intervalos de referência semelhantes aos padrões de referência. Tanto o hematócrito quanto os granulócitos e os agranulócitos apresentaram alterações típicas de animais criados em ambientes com temperaturas mais elevadas. Os perfis mineral, enzimático, proteico e metabólico foram semelhantes aos de outras raças bovinas, mas com uma faixa de valores mais estreita. No entanto, valores médios mais baixos foram observados para os níveis de cálcio ionizado, proteína total e ureia. Fêmeas Nelore apresentam perfis bioquímicos e hematológicos ligeiramente diferentes de outras raças, o que pode resultar dos manejos ambiental e nutricional aplicados e da deficiência natural de nitrogênio, fósforo e cálcio nas pastagens da região.

ABSTRACT The Nelore breed is the second largest bovine breed in the world and has actively participated in the expansion of new Brazilian agricultural frontiers. In this context, the purpose of this study was to determine the hematological and biochemical reference intervals of healthy Nelore matrices raised under an extensive regime without supplementation along southwest of Piauí state. Blood samples were collected from fifty-five multiparous female of the Nelore breed. Biochemical and hematological parameters were analyzed using a parametric statistical method with 95% CI of reference limits. The average values of red blood cells, hemoglobin as well as hematimetric indices showed reference ranges similar to reference standards. The hematocrit as well as granulocytes and agranulocytes presented alterations typical of animals raised in environments with higher temperatures. Mineral, enzymatic, protein and metabolic profiles were similar to other bovine breeds but with a narrower range of values. However, lower mean values were observed for levels of ionized calcium, total protein and urea. Nelore females present slightly different biochemical and hematological profiles from other breeds, which might result from the environmental and nutritional management applied and the natural deficiency of nitrogen, phosphorus and calcium in the region's pastures.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of whole body vibration (WBV) exercise on oxidative stress markers in a group of women with fibromyalgia (FM) compared to a group of healthy women (CT). Twenty-one women diagnosed with FM and 21 age- and weight-matched healthy women were enrolled the study. Plasma oxidative stress markers (primary outcomes) were evaluated at rest and after WBV, and included thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), iron reduction capacity (FRAP), superoxide dismutase antioxidant enzymes activity (SOD), and catalase (CAT). At rest, the FM group had higher TBARS (P<0.001) and FRAP (P<0.001), and lower CAT (P=0.005) compared to the CT. In the CT group, the WBV had no effect on TBARS (P=0.559) and FRAP (P=0.926), whereas it increased both SOD (P<0.001) and CAT (P<0.001). In the FM group, the WBV reduced TBARS (p <0.001), FRAP (P<0.001), and CAT (P=0.005), while it increased SOD (P=0.019). There was an interaction effect (moments vs groups) in the TBARS (effect size=1.34), FRAP (effect size=0.93), CAT (effect size=1.45), and SOD (effect size=1.44) (P<0.001). A single trial of WBV exercise improved all oxidant and antioxidant parameters towards a greater adaptation to the stress response in FM women.

RESUMO: A distribuição espacial e a abundância de carrapatos em estágio de vida livre foram examinadas em fragmentos de Mata Atlântica no Nordeste do Brasil. O estudo foi realizado em Unidades de Conservação de Proteção Integral Mata do Tapacurá e Mata do Camucim, localizadas no município de São Lourenço da Mata, Pernambuco. Os carrapatos foram capturados pelo método da bandeira de flanela em seis parcelas de 200m2, sendo três parcelas estabelecidas em uma borda de mata adjacente a uma matriz agropastoril e outras três parcelas estabelecidas na borda de mata adjacente ao lago de barragem. Foram capturados 2652 carrapatos do gênero Amblyomma, sendo duas ninfas identificadas como Amblyomma dissimile com distribuição espacialmente agregada, demonstrados pela relação variância/média e o índice de agregação de Lloyd. Houve variação significativa na abundância de carrapatos entre as parcelas (H=26,79, p<0,005) sendo encontrados mais carrapatos na borda da mata adjacente à matriz agropastoril. Quanto as variáveis ambientais, houve correlação positiva entre a cobertura de dossel e a densidade de carrapatos (rs=0,31, p<0,05). No presente estudo observou-se que em estágios de vida livre, notadamente larvas e ninfas, a distribuição espacial e a abundância de carrapatos são fortemente influenciadas por áreas mais fechadas das matas. A maior presença de carrapatos próximos à matriz agropastoril poderia facilitar a migração de carrapatos entre ambientes silvestres e ambientes antrópicos.

ABSTRACT: The spatial distribution and abundance of free-living ticks were examined in Atlantic Forest fragments in northeastern Brazil. The study was conducted on Integral Protection Conservation Units of Mata do Tapacurá and Mata do Camucim, located in the municipality of São Lourenço da Mata, Pernambuco. Ticks were captured by flagging method in six plots of 200m2, three plots set in a forest edge adjacent to an agropastoral matrix and three plots set in the forest edge adjacent to a dam lake. Were captured 2652 ticks of the genus Amblyomma, two nymphs identified as Amblyomma dissimile with spatially aggregated distribution, shown by the variance/mean ratio and Lloyd aggregate index. There was significant variation in the abundance of ticks between plots (H=26.79, p<0.005) and more ticks was found in the woods adjacent to the edge agropastoral matrix. There was a positive correlation between canopy cover and tick density (rs=0.31, p<0.05). In the present study, it was observed that in free-living stages, especially larvae and nymphs, the spatial distribution and abundance of ticks are strongly influenced by more enclosed areas of forests. Most ticks near agropastoral matrix could facilitate the migration of ticks between wild environments and man-made or modified environments.

A proteína C reativa (PCR) é uma das proteínas de fase aguda cuja solicitação tem crescido de forma exponencial em vários países, incluindo o Brasil. Neste estudo, a utilidade da PCR em diversas situações clínicas foi revisada por um grupo de médicos composto por especialistas em Medicina Interna, Emergências Médicas, Terapia Intensiva, Rastreamento e Medicina Laboratorial com o objetivo de analisar a literatura pertinente e propor diretrizes para o uso mais racional desse exame laboratorial. O resultado foi a criação de fluxogramas orientadores da solicitação de PCR adaptados a quatro ambientes assistenciais diferentes, sendo eles unidades de terapia intensiva, pronto-socorro, enfermarias e ambulatórios. Esses fluxogramas e uma discussão mais detalhada sobre as diversas indicações clínicas do exame são apresentados neste estudo.

C-reactive protein (CRP) is an acute-phase protein whose requests have been growing exponentially in several countries, including Brazil. In this study, the use of CRP in several clinical situations was reviewed by a group of physicians comprised by specialists in internal medicine, medical emergencies, intensive care, screening, and laboratory medicine, aiming to analyze the applicable literature and to propose guidelines for a more rational use of this laboratory test. The result was the creation of flowcharts guiding CRP request, adjusted to four different healthcare environments, namely, intensive care units, emergency room, wards, and outpatient clinics. These flowcharts, as well as a more detailed discussion on several clinical recommendations for the test, are presented in this study.

In the current post-genomic era, the genetic basis of pig growth can be understood by assessing SNP marker effects and genomic breeding values (GEBV) based on estimates of these growth curve parameters as phenotypes. Although various statistical methods, such as random regression (RR-BLUP) and Bayesian LASSO (BL), have been applied to genomic selection (GS), none of these has yet been used in a growth curve approach. In this work, we compared the accuracies of RR-BLUP and BL using empirical weight-age data from an outbred F2 (Brazilian Piau X commercial) population. The phenotypes were determined by parameter estimates using a nonlinear logistic regression model and the halothane gene was considered as a marker for evaluating the assumptions of the GS methods in relation to the genetic variation explained by each locus. BL yielded more accurate values for all of the phenotypes evaluated and was used to estimate SNP effects and GEBV vectors. The latter allowed the construction of genomic growth curves, which showed substantial genetic discrimination among animals in the final growth phase. The SNP effect estimates allowed identification of the most relevant markers for each phenotype, the positions of which were coincident with reported QTL regions for growth traits.

O milho tem sido cultivado em duas safras anuais no Brasil e consumido por humanos e animais. O uso de herbicidas no controle de plantas daninhas nessa cultura pode comprometer o ambiente em função dos efeitos sobre organismos não alvos. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a seletividade de atrazine e nicosulfuron sobre o predador Podisus nigrispinus. Os tratamentos constaram da aplicação de atrazine, nicosulfuron e da mistura destes, em doses equivalentes à comercial, mais um tratamento controle à base de água. A solução com os herbicidas foi aspergida sobre ovos de dois dias de idade de P. nigrispinuse em cada um dos cinco estádios ninfais e fase adulta do inseto. A viabilidade dos ovos de P. nigrispinus diminuiu sob ação dos herbicidas, sem eles diferirem quanto ao tempo de eclosão. A sobrevivência de ninfas foi baixa sob ação dos herbicidas, sendo mais afetada negativamente sob ação da mistura destes. Para a aplicação em cada estádio, observou-se baixa sobrevivência de ninfas do primeiro ao terceiro estádio sob ação do herbicida atrazine, isolado ou em mistura, e até o segundo estádio para o nicosulfuron. Também ficou evidente em todos os demais estádios do inseto a menor seletividade à mistura dos herbicidas, em comparação ao efeito isolado. Conclui-se que ovos de P. nigrispinus são sensíveis aos herbicidas testados e que a aplicação na cultura do milho desses produtos poderá diminuir o controle biológico de pragas promovido por esse inseto.

Corn is traditionally grown in two annual harvests in Brazil and consumed by humans and animals. The use of herbicides to control weeds in this crop may compromise the environment, affecting non-target organisms. The aim of this study was to evaluate the selectivity of atrazine and nicosulfuron on the predator Podisus nigrispinus Dallas, 1851 (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae). The treatments consisted of application of a combination of atrazine and nicosulfuron in doses equivalent to the commercial dose, plus a water-based control. The solution with herbicides was sprayed on two- day- old eggs of P. nigrispinus and at each ofthe five nymphal stages and adult phase ofthe insects. The viability of eggs of P. nigrispinus decreased under the action of the herbicides, without differences regarding time of hatching. The survival of nymphs was low under the effect of the herbicides, being more adversely affected by the action ofthe herbicide mixtures. For the application at each stage, we observed a low survival rate of nymphs from the first to the third instar under the action ofthe herbicide atrazine, alone, or in combination, and even at the second stage for nicosulfuron. Lower selectivity to herbicide mixture also became evident at all the insect stages, compared to the isolated effect. It was concluded that eggs of P. nigrispinus are sensitive to herbicides and that application of such products on corn may decrease the biological pest control provided by this insect.

Since the advent of cardiopulmonary resuscitation more than 40 years ago, we have achieved a return to spontaneous circulation in a growing proportion of patients with cardiac arrest. Nevertheless, most of these patients die in the first few days after admission to the intensive care unit (ICU), and this situation has not improved over the years. Mortality in these patients is mainly associated to brain damage. Perhaps recognizing that cardiopulmonary resuscitation does not end with the return of spontaneous circulation but rather with the return of normal brain function and total stabilization of the patient would help improve the therapeutic management of these patients in the ICU. In this sense, the term cardiocerebral resuscitation proposed by some authors might be more appropriate. The International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation recently published a consensus document on the "Post-Cardiac Arrest Syndrome" and diverse authors have proposed that post-arrest care be integrated as the fifth link in the survival chain, after early warning, early cardiopulmonary resuscitation by witnesses, early defibrillation, and early advanced life support. The therapeutic management of patients that recover spontaneous circulation after cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers based on life support measures and a series of improvised actions based on "clinical judgment" might not be the best way to treat patients with post-cardiac arrest syndrome. Recent studies indicate that using goal-guided protocols to manage these patients including therapeutic measures of proven efficacy, such as inducing mild therapeutic hypothermia and early revascularization, when indicated, can improve the prognosis considerably in these patients. Given that there is no current protocol based on universally accepted evidence, the Steering Committee of the National Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Plan of the Spanish Society of Intensive Medicine and Cardiac Units has elaborated this document after a thorough review of the literature and an online discussion involving all the members of the committee and a consensus meeting with the aim of providing a platform for the development of local protocols in different ICSs in our country to fit their own means and characteristics.

Desde el advenimiento de la resucitación cardiopulmonar (RCP), hace más de 40 años, se ha conseguido que cada vez una mayor proporción de pacientes con parada cardiorrespiratoria logren la recuperación de la circulación espontánea (RCE). Sin embargo, la mayoría de estos pacientes fallecen en los primeros días tras su ingreso en las unidades de cuidados intensivos (UCI), y esta situación no ha mejorado en estos años. La mortalidad de estos pacientes se asocia en gran medida a daño cerebral. Posiblemente, el reconocimiento de que la RCP no se acaba con la RCE, sino con el retorno de la función cerebral normal y la estabilización total del paciente, nos ayudará a mejorar el tratamiento terapéutico de estos pacientes en las UCI. En este sentido, parece más apropiado el término "resucitación cardiocerebral", como proponen algunos autores. Recientemente, el Internacional Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) ha publicado un documento de consenso sobre el "síndrome posparada cardíaca" y diversos autores han propuesto que los cuidados posparada se integren como un quinto eslabón de la cadena de supervivencia, tras la alerta precoz, la RCP precoz por testigos, la desfibrilación precoz y el soporte vital avanzado precoz. El manejo terapéutico de los pacientes que recuperan la circulación espontánea tras las maniobras de RCP basada en medidas de soporte vital y una serie de actuaciones improvisadas basadas en el "juicio clínico" puede que no sea la mejor forma de tratar a los pacientes con "síndrome posparada cardíaca". Estudios recientes indican que el tratamiento de estos pacientes mediante protocolos guiados por objetivos -incluyendo las medidas terapéuticas que han demostrado su eficacia, como la hipotermia terapéutica inducida leve y la revascularización precoz, cuando esté indicada- puede mejorar notablemente el pronóstico de éstos. Dado que en el momento actual no existe un protocolo basado en la evidencia universalmente aceptado, el Comité Directivo del Plan Nacional de RCP de la Sociedad Española de Medicina Intensiva, Crítica y Unidades Coronarias (SEMICYUC), tras una revisión exhaustiva de la literatura científica sobre el tema, seguida de una discusión en línea entre todos los miembros del comité y una reunión de consenso, ha elaborado el presente documento con la intención de que pueda servir como base para el desarrollo de protocolos locales en las diferentes UCI de nuestro país, teniendo en cuenta sus medios y sus características propias.

Foram determinados os valores de energia metabolizável aparente (EMA), de energia metabolizável aparente corrigida por retenção de nitrogênio (EMAn) e do coeficiente de metabolização aparente da energia bruta (CMAEB%) do milho, sorgo, farelo de soja, farelo de glúten de milho e óleo de soja refinado. Foram utilizadas 240 codornas japonesas (Coturnix japonica), fêmeas com idade inicial de 60 dias, em delineamento experimental inteiramente ao caso, com seis tratamentos, cinco repetições e oito codornas por unidade experimental. Os tratamentos consistiram de cinco rações experimentais e uma ração referência. Cada ração experimental foi constituída, na base da matéria natural, por 70% da ração referência e 30% do ingrediente a ser testado, com exceção da ração para determinação da EMAn do óleo de soja, com 10% de inclusão e 90% da ração referência. O experimento foi realizado em gaiolas distribuídas em baterias metálicas. Os valores de EMA, EMAn (em kcal/kg de matéria natural) e do CMAEB (%) do milho moído, sorgo, farelo de soja, farelo de glúten de milho e óleo de soja refinado foram, respectivamente: 3.572 e 3.612kcal/kg e 92,6%; 3.108 e 3.149kcal/kg e 80,9%; 2.633 e 2.676kcal/kg e 65,3%; 4.043 e 4.096kcal/kg e 75,0%; 9.335 e 9.379kcal/kg e 98,8%. Os valores de EMA descritos para outras espécies de aves são discrepantes dos obtidos no presente estudo, não sendo recomendado seu uso em formulação de rações para codornas japonesas em postura.

The values of the apparent metabolizable energy (AME), the apparent metabolizable energy corrected for nitrogen retention (AMEn), and the apparent metabolization coefficient of crude energy (AMCCE) were determined in corn, sorghum, soybean meal, corn gluten meal, and refined soybean oil. Two-hundred and forty six-day-old female Japanese quails (Coturnix japonica) were used in a completely randomized design, with five replicates and eight quails per experimental unit. The treatments consisted of six experimental diets and one reference diet. Each experimental diet was constituted, as fed basis, for 70% of the reference ration and 30% of food that would be tested, except the ration that contained refined soybean oil that was tested, as fed basis, with 10% of addition and 90% of the reference ration. The biological assay was carried out in wired floor cages distributed in iron batteries. The respective values of AME, AMEn (kcal/kg of natural matter basis), and AMCCE (%) of ground corn, sorghum, soybean meal, corn gluten meal, and refined soybean oil were respectively: 3,572, 3,612kcal/kg, and 92.6%; 3,108, 3,149kcal/kg, and 80.9%; 2,633, 2,676kcal/kg, and 65.3%; 4,043, 4,096kcal/kg, and 75.0%; and 9,335, 9,379kcal/kg, and 98.8%. The values of AME described for other birds species were different from those obtained in this study and are not recommended to be used in ration composition for Japanese quails.

Determinaram-se os valores de energia metabolizável aparente (EMA) e energia metabolizável aparente corrigida por retenção de nitrogênio (EMAn) de sete alimentos testados em dietas para codornas japonesas. Utilizaram-se 280 codornas japonesas (Coturnix japonica) fêmeas, com idade inicial de 26 dias, em delineamento experimental inteiramente ao acaso, com cinco repetições e sete codornas por unidade experimental. Os tratamentos consistiram de sete dietas experimentais e uma dieta referência. Cada dieta experimental foi constituída, na base da matéria natural, por 70% da dieta referência e 30% do alimento a ser testado, à exceção da dieta contendo óleo de soja degomado, que substituiu 10% da dieta referência, na base da matéria natural. Os valores de EMA e EMAn (kcal por kg de matéria natural) foram: 3.124 e 3.122 (milho moído), 3.152 e 3.102 (colorífico), 2.980 e 2.947 (quirera de arroz), 8.065 e 7.940 (óleo de soja degomado), 2.633 e 2.651 (farelo de soja), 2.477 e 2.492 (semente de linhaça) e 1.323 e 1.274 (casca + polpa de abacaxi), respectivamente.

Apparent metabolizable energy (AME) and apparent metabolizable energy corrected for nitrogen retention (AMEn) were determined in seven foodstuffs tested in japanese quail feedings. Two hundred and eighty japanese female quails (Coturnix japonica), twenty-six-days-old were used in a completely randomized experimental design, with five replicates and seven quails per experimental unit. The treatments consisted on seven experimental diets and one reference diet. Each experimental diet was constituted, as fed basis, of 70% of the reference diet and 30% of food in test, except for the diet containing soy bean oil without phospholipid, which replaced 10% of the reference diet, as fed basis. The values of AME and AMEn (kcal/kg of fed basis) were: 3.124 and 3.122 (ground corn), 3.152 and 3.102 (spice), 2.980 and 2.947 (broken rice grains), 8.065 and 7.940 (soy bean oil without phospholipids), 2.633 and 2.651 (soybean meal), 2.477 and 2.492 (linseed meal) and 1.323 and 1.274 (peel and pulp of pineapple), respectively.

In this work, we predict a structural model for the RecA protein from M. synoviae (MsRecA) by theoretical homology modeling and evaluate the occurrence of polymorphisms in this protein within several isolates of this species. The structural model suggested for MsRecA conserves the main domains present in MtRecA and EcRecA. The L1 and L2 regions showed six and three amino acid substitutions, respectively, which apparently do not affect the conformation and function of MsRecA. The C-terminal domain is shorter than that found in EcRecA and MtRecA, which may increase its capacity to bind dsDNA and displace SSB, compensating the absence of recombination initiation enzymes. The MS59 isolate RecA sequence showed one polymorphism which does not affect its functions since these belong to the same physical-chemical group.

O experimento objetivou estimar as exigências de proteína bruta (PB) e energia metabolizável (EM) para máximo desempenho de machos de codornas japonesas criadas para a produção de carne e determinação da idade de abate que resultasse em peso máximo das aves. Quatrocentos e cinqüenta codornas foram utilizadas em delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso, com cinco repetições de seis codornas por unidade experimental. Os tratamentos, de dietas formuladas a partir da combinação de cinco níveis de PB (18, 20, 22, 24 e 26%) e três níveis de EM (2800, 3000 e 3200kcal/kg de ração), foram alocados nas parcelas e os quatro períodos experimentais nas sub-parcelas. As variáveis estudadas durante os quatro períodos (5 a 16; 16 a 27; 27 a 38 e 38 a 49 dias de idade) foram consumo de ração (CR), ganho de peso (GP), conversão alimentar (CA) e peso vivo (PV). No período total (5 a 49 dias de idade) foram estudados consumo de ração acumulado (CRA), ganho de peso acumulado (GPA) e conversão alimentar acumulada (CAA). As exigências estimadas de PB e EM durante o primeiro (5 a 16) e terceiro (27 a 38) períodos foram 26 e 2800 e 18% e 3200kcal/kg de ração, respectivamente. A exigência de PB no segundo período (16 a 27 dias de idade) foi de 26%, não sendo possível estimar a exigência energética. No quarto (38 a 49 dias de idade) período experimental a exigência estimada de EM foi de 3200kcal/kg de ração, não sendo possível estimar a exigência protéica. No período total as exigências protéica e energética, estimadas para máximos ganhos de peso acumulados, foram de 26% e 3200kcal/kg de ração, respectivamente. As idades estimadas que resultaram em PV máximo dependeram do nível de PB e de EM da dieta, variando de 57 a 85 e 60 a 74 dias, respectivamente.

The experiment aimed to estimate the crude protein (CP) and metabolizable energy (ME) requirements for maximum performance of male Japanese quails reared for meat production purpose and to further estimate the slaughter age for maximum weight of quails. Four hundred and fifty quails were used in a completely randomized design with five replicates of six quails per experimental unit. The treatments, consisting of the combination of five levels of CP (18, 20, 22, 24 and 26%) and three level of ME (2800, 3000 and 3200kcal/kg of diet), were allotted to the plots, while the four periods, to the split-plot. The studied traits during four periods (5 to 16; 16 to 27; 27 to 38 and 38 to 49 days of age) were feed intake (FI), weight gain (WG), feed:gain ratio (FG) and body weight (BW). During the whole period (5 to 49 days of age) the studied traits were total feed intake (TFI), total weight gain (TWG) and total feed:gain ratio (TFG). The estimates of CP and ME requirements, during the first (5 to 16) and third (27 to 38 days of age) periods were: 26 and 2800 and 18% and 3200kcal/kg of diet. The CP requirement in the second period (16 to 27 days of age) was 26%, however, it was not possible to estimate the ME requirement. In the fourth (38 to 49 days of age) experimental period, the estimated ME requirement was 3200kcal/kg of diet, however, it was not possible to estimate the CP requirement. For the whole period, the crude protein and metabolizable energy requirements, estimated for maximum total weight gain were 26% and 3200kcal/kg of diet, respectively. The estimated ages for maximum BW depended on the CP and ME level of diet, and varied from 57 to 85 and 60 to 74 days, respectively.
