Abstract Continuous illumination and increased feeding periods have enhanced growth in commercial fish species. However, oxygen consumption under these conditions has yet to be previously assessed in agastric short-intestine fish. This study evaluated Chirostoma estor (Atherinopsidae) oxygen consumption under three specific feeding and light regimes: resting-unfed, routine-fed, and continuous light/feeding. Fish in the continuous light/feeding condition presented oxygen consumption levels 60 and 20% higher than resting-unfed and routine-fed fish, respectively. The latter implies that constant high oxygen supply levels are required to satisfy the demand for C. estor raised under these high growth rate conditions. The present study shows the relevance of determining oxygen consumption levels during continuous illumination and extended feeding periods to consider optimal oxygen levels required to achieve better performance indicators, such as the growth and welfare of atherinopsids and species with similar digestive configurations.

Resumen La iluminación continua y el aumento de frecuencias alimenticias han mejorado el crecimiento de peces en cultivo. Sin embargo, el consumo de oxígeno en estas condiciones no se ha evaluado en peces agástricos de intestino corto. Este estudio evaluó el consumo de oxígeno de Chirostoma estor bajo tres regímenes específicos de alimentación y luz: reposo sin alimentación, alimentación de rutina y alimentación/luz continua. En este último tratamiento los peces presentaron niveles de consumo de oxígeno de 60 y 20% más altos que los peces en reposo y con alimentación rutinaria, respectivamente. Esto implica que se requieren niveles elevados y constantes de suministro de oxígeno para satisfacer la demanda de C. estor en cultivo en condiciones crecimiento acelerado. El presente estudio muestra la relevancia de determinar los niveles de consumo de oxígeno bajo protocolos de crecimiento acelerado para lograr mejores indicadores de desempeño de otras especies con configuraciones digestivas similares.

Abstract Introduction: Blunt thoracic aortic injuries (BTAI) are defined as a tear in the thoracic aorta caused by a high energy blunt trauma with sudden deceleration and increased intravascular pressure. The most common reported mechanism of injury is motor vehicle accidents, and it can be potentially lethal. The purpose of this study was to analyze and report our center’s experience in the treatment of blunt traumatic injuries of thoracic aorta and supra-aortic trunks. Methods: A retrospective review of a single center's database was done to identify all patients treated for BTAI, in a four-year period, from January 2018 to December 2021. Follow-up period ranged from three to 24 months. Patients’ demographics, injury mechanism, location and grade of aortic injury, treatment details, timing of intervention, length of hospital stay, follow-up time, and postoperative morbidity and mortality were extracted from patients’ medical records. A descriptive analysis of all the data was performed. Results and discussion: We identified six patients to include in the study. Mean age was 29 years and 83.3% of patients were male. The mechanism of injury was motor vehicle accident for all cases. The most common injury grade was type III (pseudoaneurysm) in five patients (83.3%), and one patient presented with a type IV aortic injury with rupture. All injuries were in the aortic isthmus and all patients were suitable for TEVAR. Mean time to intervention was 17 days. Mean oversizing was 11%. Two patients had coverage of their LSA. No deaths occurred in the hospital or during the follow-up period, and there were no registered vascular procedure-related morbidities. Conclusion: This study reports a level one trauma center experience in management of BTAI. All patients underwent CTA for diagnosis and grading of aortic injury. TEVAR proved to be effective in the treatment of BTAI, with few complications and good outcomes at short and mid-term follow-up, and it should be the first-line treatment for these patients. OSR should be an option when a patient’s injury is not suitable for endovascular approach.

RESUMEN Esta investigación propone sustituir el cieno carbonatado que se utiliza como agente neutralizante en la tecnología de lixiviación ácida por los polvos residuales de la industria del mármol. El proceso de neutralización del licor en la lixiviación ácida a presión presenta concentraciones de ácido sulfúrico en exceso con valores de pH igual a 1,9 unidades, lo cual permite utilizar los residuos sólidos de carbonato de calcio de la industria del mármol. La investigación se realizó a escala de laboratorio con un régimen de agitación de 68 rpm. Se utilizó el diseño factorial multinivel, donde se estudian dos factores: la masa de sólido del agente neutralizante (1, 2, 3 y 4 g) y la temperatura (50 C y 700 C). Se evaluó, además, el comportamiento de las variables mediante el modelo cinético. Los modelos estadísticos evidenciaron una relación directa entre el aumento de la masa de sólido y la temperatura, donde el primer factor ejerce una influencia positiva en el proceso. Los mejores resultados de pH se obtienen en la prueba 1, para (50 ºC y 1 g), donde se logran valores desde 2,37 hasta 2,53, en el tiempo desde uno hasta 10 minutos.

ABSTRACT This research is a proposal for replacing carbonated silt used as neutralizing agent in acid leaching technology with residual dust from marble industry. The liquor neutralization process in pressure acid leaching contains sulfuric acid concentration to excess with pH values equal to 1.9 units, which allows using solid calcium carbonate residues from marble industry. The research was carried out at laboratory scale with an agitation regime of 68 rpm. The multilevel factorial design was used, where two factors are studied: solid mass of neutralizing agent (1, 2, 3 and 4 g) and temperature (50 ºC and 700 ºC. Behavior of variables was also assessed by means of kinetic model. The statistical models showed a direct relationship between the increase of solid in the mass and the temperature, where the first factor exerts a positive influence on the process. The best pH results are obtained in test 1, for (50 ºC and 1 g), where values from 2,37 to 2,53 are achieved between one to ten minutes.

Abstract Traditional post-fire forest management can influence future vegetation composition and recovery of a burned area. The present study, integrated in SUDOE-REMAS project (SOE3/P4/E0954) and Curricular Unit Silviculture II (Instituto Superior de Agronomia, Universidade de Lisboa), evaluated the effect of forest management on the diversity of post-fire vegetation in the cork oak forest from Serra do Caldeirão (Algarve, Portugal). Climate is classified as Csa and most of soils are Leptosols. We selected three types of cork oak plots: unburned (A), burned with post-fire management (B) and burned with post-fire abandonment (C). Floristic inventories were carried out through transects (15 transects per group and each one with 10 m of length ) to determine species abundance and diversity. Hill series diversity indices were estimated for the individuals inventoried. The results indicated that plots C present greater diversity in all Hill Series indices. Plots A presented greater diversity when compared to B. The species Lavandula stoechas ssp. luisieri Rozeira was the dominant in the 3 groups (19% in plots A, 17% in B and 19% in C). In the burned plots (B+C), Cistus ladanifer L. represented 14% of the total individuals, with or without management. In the unburned plots (A), Ulex argenteus Welw. ex Webb representes 17% of the individuals present. There’s a greater presence of pyrophytic species (genera Cistus and Ulex) in burned plots, with or without management. Fire is favourable to species diversity but not to their resistance to new fires. Nevertheless, management of herbaceous flora in burned plots seems to positively influence vegetation composition and diversity.

Resumo A gestão florestal tradicional pós-fogo pode influenciar a vegetação futura do local e a recuperação da área ardida. O presente estudo, integrado no projeto SUDOE-REMAS (SOE3/P4/E0954) e na Unidade Curricular de Silvicultura II ministrada no Instituto Superior de Agronomia da Universidade de Lisboa, avaliou o efeito da gestão florestal na diversidade da vegetação pós-fogo no sobreiral da Serra do Caldeirão (Algarve, S de Portugal). A maioria dos solos são classificados como Leptossolos e o clima é do tipo Cs. Selecionaram-se parcelas de 3 tipos: não ardidas com gestão pós-fogo (A), ardidas com gestão pós-fogo (B) e ardidas sem gestão pós-fogo (C). Efetuaram-se inventários florísticos através de transeptos (15 transeptos por tipologia), com 10 m de comprimento cada, para avaliação da abundância e diversidade de espécies. Estimaram-se os índices de diversidade da série de Hill para os indivíduos inventariados. Os resultados indicaram que as parcelas do tipo C apresentam maior diversidade em todos os índices da Série de Hill. As parcelas A apresentaram maior diversidade quando comparadas com as parcelas B. A espécie Lavandula stoechas ssp. luisieri Rozeira é a espécie dominante nos 3 grupos (19% in plots A, 17% in B and 19% in C). Nas parcelas ardidas (B+C), Cistus ladanifer L. representa 14% dos indivíduos presentes, com ou sem gestão. Verificou-se maior presença de espécies pirófitas (géneros Cistus e Ulex) nas parcelas ardidas, com ou sem gestão. Este estudo aponta que o fogo pode favorecer a diversidade de espécies mas não a resistência das mesmas a novos fogos. Ainda assim, a gestão da flora herbácea nas parcelas ardidas parece influenciar positivamente a composição e diversidade.

RESUMO: O uso da resistência de plantas atua intervindo na relação herbívoro-hospedeiro, através de fatores morfológicos, físicos ou químicos da planta. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a oviposição e o consumo foliar de Chrysodeixis includens (Walker [1858]) em genótipos de soja, através de testes com e sem escolha, correlacionando-os com os fatores, densidade e tamanho de tricomas. Os experimentos foram realizados em laboratório (25 ± 2 °C; UR= 70 ± 10%; fotoperíodo 14h) utilizando cinco cultivares (BRS 391, BRS 6203 RR, BMX Valente RR, Tec Irga 6070 RR, BMX Icone Ipro) e duas linhagens (PELBR 10-6000 e PELBR 10-6049). Os tricomas encontrados foram tectores filiformes e glandulares multicelulares claviformes. A densidade de tricomas glandulares nos estágios V2 e V5, foi maior em BRS 6203 RR e BRS 391, respectivamente. A maior densidade de tricomas glandulares foi observada em V5 e a maior densidade de tricomas tectores em V2. As menores densidades e os menores tamanhos de tricomas nos estágios V2 e V5 foram observados em PELBR 10-6049. O tamanho de tricomas tectores e o número de ovos não diferiram entre as cultivares. O consumo foliar foi menor para BMX Icone Ipro e Tec Irga 6070 RR. A densidade de tricomas influência o comportamento de consumo e oviposição de C. includens. ABSTRACT: The use of plant resistance acts by intervening in the herbivore-host relationship, through morphological, physical or chemical factors of the plant. This study evaluated the oviposition and foliar consumption of Chrysodeixis includens (Walker [1858]) in soybean genotypes, in free- and no-choice tests, correlating them with the factors, density and size of trichomes. The experiments were carried out in laboratory (25 ± 2 °C; RH= 70 ± 10%; photoperiod 14h) using five cultivars (BRS 391, BRS 6203 RR, BMX Valente RR, Tec Irga 6070 RR, BMX Icone Ipro) and two isolines (PELBR 10-6000 and PELBR 10-6049). The trichomes reported were filiform tectors and claviform multicellular glandular. The density of glandular trichomes, in stages V2 and V5, was higher on BRS 6203 RR and BRS 391, respectively. The higher density of glandular trichomes was observed in V5 and a higher density of tector trichomes in V2. The lowest densities and the smallest sizes of trichomes in V2 and V5 stages was observed on PELBR 10-6049. The size of tector trichomes and the number of eggs did not differ among the cultivars. Foliar consumption was lower for on BMX Icone Ipro and Tec Irga 6070 RR. Trichome density influences the consumption and oviposition behavior of C. includens. Resumo As comunidades quilombolas, estão presentes em diversos estados brasileiros, vivendo em condições de saúde mais precárias. Isto ocorre por conta do isolamento geográfico, das limitações de acesso e da falta de qualidade no serviço quando este é prestado. Nesse sentido, o objetivo do estudo foi analisar a qualidade de vida de mulheres de uma comunidade quilombola do nordeste brasileiro. Estudo observacional, transversal e descritivo. Foram entrevistadas 160 mulheres adultas, através de um formulário para a coleta de perfil e do questionário de Qualidade de Vida WHOQOL – bref. Foi observado que as mulheres tinham em média 40,7 anos (±17,25), casadas, autodeclaradas negras, com fundamental incompleto, do lar, sem renda, com moradia de alvenaria, própria, com até 6 cômodos, abastecidas por caixa de água comunitária, tratada. A Qualidade de Vida, apresentou escores medianos nos domínios: físico (3,18), psicológico (3,4), relações sociais (3,45) e meio ambiente (2,59). Com a realização desta pesquisa foi possível caracterizar a comunidade quilombola de Santa Luzia do Norte-AL quanto as dificuldades de acesso a saúde e geração de renda, fatos que repercutem na sua condição de saúde. Os problemas descritos neste estudo podem contribuir para que ações de saúde sejam planejadas e efetivadas com o intuito de melhorar as condições socioeconômicas e de saúde nessa comunidade, considerando-se o contexto social, político e ambiental, valorizando seus saberes e práticas tradicionais.

Abstract Quilombola communities are present in many Brazilian states living in precarious health conditions. This is due to geographic isolation, limitations to the access of the area in which they live in, and the lack of quality in the service when it is needed to be provided. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the quality of life of women from a quilombola community in northeastern Brazil. It is an observational, cross-sectional and descriptive study. 160 adult women were first interviewed through a form to collect a profile and then it was applied the WHOQOL Quality of Life questionnaire – bref. It was observed that the women were on average 40.7 years old (±17.25), married, self-declared black, who did not finish elementary school, housewife, had no income, with their own masonry house, with up to 6 rooms, supplied by a box of community treated water. Quality of Life had median scores in the domains: physical (3.18), psychological (3.4), social relationships (3.45) and environment (2.59). With this research, it was possible to characterize the quilombola community of Santa Luzia do Norte-AL regarding the difficulties of access to health and income generation, issues that affect their health condition. The problems described in this study can contribute to health actions being planned and carried out in order to improve socioeconomic and health conditions in this community, considering the social, political and environmental context, valuing their traditional knowledge and practices.

Resumo A leishmaniose visceral é uma doença tropical negligenciada. Foram avaliadas a distribuição espacial dos casos de leishmaniose visceral no estado de Alagoas. Todos os casos de LV, registrados pela secretaria de saúde, foram analisados e georreferenciados. Entre 2008 e 2017, 97,1% dos municípios apresentaram classificação esporádica de transmissão. Com a evolução temporal, a incidência de casos de leishmaniose visceral se concentrou na maioria dos municípios da microrregião de Santana do Ipanema-AL. A análise espaço-tempo, se considerada, pode promover o aprimoramento das ações de vigilância e controle da leishmaniose visceral.

Abstract Visceral leishmaniosis is a neglected tropical disease. We evaluated the spatial distribution of cases of visceral leishmaniosis in the state of Alagoas, Brazil. All cases of VL, registered by the health department, were analyzed and georeferenced. Results: Between 2008 and 2017, 97.1% of the municipalities presented sporadic classification of transmission. With temporal evolution, the incidence of cases of visceral leishmaniosis was concentrated in most municipalities in the microregion of Santana do Ipanema-AL. Space-time analysis, if considered, may promote the improvement of surveillance and control actions of visceral leishmaniosis.

Resumo: Avaliações psicossociais raramente são realizadas com indivíduos residentes na comunidade, especialmente aqueles com maior risco de doença cardiovascular. Este estudo tem como objetivo avaliar o estresse perceptivo e o risco cardiovascular entre mulheres em um grande estudo transversal realizado em comunidades brasileiras. Foram incluídas mulheres com idade superior a 18 anos de 500 unidades básicas de saúde (UBS) públicas do Brasil. Todas as participantes foram submetidas a consulta clínica e aplicação de questionários. Os dados foram utilizados para identificar estilo de vida saudável, tabagismo e autopercepção de estresse psicológico. O índice de risco (NRS) do National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) foi utilizado para estimar o risco cardiovascular. As informações de etnia foram autorreferidas, considerando mulheres brancas versus não brancas (negras, pardas e pardas). Um total de 93.605 pacientes foram recrutados em um ambiente de atenção primária, dos quais 62.200 (66,4%) eram mulheres. A autopercepção intensa e grave de estresse foi maior em mulheres não brancas em casa (p < 0,001), no trabalho (p = 0,008), socialmente (p < 0,001) e financeiramente (p < 0,001) em comparação com mulheres brancas. Portanto, a NRS indica que as mulheres não brancas apresentaram maior risco cardiovascular, menor atividade física e menor consumo diário de vegetais/frutas em comparação às mulheres brancas (p < 0,001). As mulheres não brancas nas comunidades brasileiras são suscetíveis ao aumento do estresse e do risco de doenças cardiovasculares, o que aumenta as disparidades no acesso ao sistema público de saúde.

Resumen: Raramente se realizan evaluaciones psicosociales con personas que viven en la comunidad, especialmente aquellas con mayor riesgo de enfermedad cardiovascular. Este estudio tiene como objetivo evaluar el estrés perceptivo y el riesgo cardiovascular entre las mujeres en un gran estudio transversal realizado en comunidades brasileñas. Se incluyeron mujeres mayores de 18 años de 500 unidades básicas de salud (UBS) públicas de Brasil. Todas las participantes fueron sometidas a una consulta clínica y aplicación de cuestionarios. Los datos se utilizaron para identificar el estilo de vida saludable, el tabaquismo y la autopercepción del estrés psicológico. Se utilizó la puntuación de riesgo (NRS) de la Encuesta Nacional de Examen de Salud y Nutrición (NHANES) para estimar el riesgo cardiovascular. La información étnica fue autoinformada, considerando mujeres blancas versus no blancas (negras, marrones y mestizas). Se reclutó a un total de 93.605 pacientes en un entorno de atención primaria, de los cuales 62.200 (66,4%) eran mujeres. La autopercepción intensa y severa del estrés fue mayor entre las mujeres no blancas en el hogar (p < 0,001), en el trabajo (p = 0,008), socialmente (p < 0,001) y financieramente (p < 0,001) en comparación con las mujeres blancas. Por lo tanto, el NRS indica que las mujeres no blancas tenían mayor riesgo cardiovascular, menor actividad física y menor consumo diario de verduras y frutas en comparación con las mujeres blancas (p < 0,001). Las mujeres no blancas en las comunidades brasileñas son susceptibles a un mayor estrés y riesgo de enfermedades cardiovasculares, lo que se suma a las disparidades en el acceso al sistema de salud pública.

Wound dressing devices composed of microfibers of poly(butylene-adipate-co-terephthalate) and poly-(ε-caprolactone) incorporated with ibuprofen were obtained by electrospinning technique. The effect of ibuprofen concentration (0, 10, and 20% m m-1) on morphology, spectroscopic, and thermal characterization was evaluated. The fibers containing ibuprofen presented beads and revealed no uniformity. The spectroscopic analysis showed signals that reveal the ibuprofen incorporation on fibers. At the same time, X-ray diffraction spectroscopy indicated a difference in the fiber crystallinity depending on drug concentration, where a lower crystallinity was verified by the film containing a greater concentration incorporated. Rheological measurements revealed that films were more plastic in greater ibuprofen incorporation. Contact angle characterization revealed that ibuprofen solubilization on composite surfaces increased the film wettability. Finally, the fibers promoted the controlled release of ibuprofen, promoting morphological changes in polymeric matrices. Resumo A contaminação bacteriana provoca perdas irreparáveis no desempenho da fermentação alcoólica. Antibióticos são utilizados para controlar esses microrganismos, mas geram resíduos e causam resistência microbiana. Hoje o único produto comercial utilizado pelas fábricas é o lúpulo, mas é muito caro. Como alternativa, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a viabilidade da utilização de extratos de plantas cultivadas no Cerrado para controle antimicrobiano durante uma fermentação alcoólica em substituição a antibióticos. Foram testados extratos hidroetanólicos de folhas e óleo essencial das seguintes espécies: Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi, Serjania erecta, Serjania marginata, Campomanesia adamantium e Syzygium cumini. Apenas o extrato de Serjania marginata não apresentou atividade contra a bactéria Bacillus sp. Abstract Bacterial contamination causes irreparable losses in the performance of alcoholic fermentation. Antibiotics are used to control these microorganisms, but they generate residues and cause microbial resistance. Today the only commercial product used by the mills is hops, but it is very expensive. As an alternative, the objective of this work was to evaluate the feasibility of using extracts from plants grown in the Cerrado for antimicrobial control during an alcoholic fermentation to replace antibiotics. Hydraethanolic extracts of leaves and essential oil of the following species were tested: Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi, Serjania erecta, Serjania marginata, Campomanesia adamantium and Syzygium cumini. Only the extract of Serjania marginata did not show any activity against the bacterium Bacillus sp. Resumo O aumento da modificação dos habitats e da perda de espécies demanda esforços consistentes para descrever e compreender os padrões de biodiversidade. O programa BIOTA/FAPESP foi criado nesse contexto e é uma iniciativa de sucesso para promover estudos em biodiversidade e conservação no Brasil. O BIOTA/Araçá é um projeto interdisciplinar que promoveu uma avaliação detalhada da biodiversidade da Baía do Araçá, um ecossistema costeiro localizado ao Norte do estado de São Paulo, Sudeste do Brasil. A baía engloba múltiplos habitats, tais como praias, manguezais, costões rochosos, e uma planície de maré, e também fornece importantes serviços ecossistêmicos. Infelizmente, a baía está sujeita à conflitos sócio-ambientais complexos que contrastam demandas econômicas, sociais e ambientais (i.e. a expansão das atividades do porto vizinho vs. a pesca artesanal de pequena escala e a proteção da biodiversidade). O presente estudo apresenta um levantamento das espécies bentônicas que ocorrem nos diferentes habitats da Baía do Araçá, incluindo dados obtidos durante o projeto BIOTA/Araçá e de investigações realizadas anteriormente na área. As espécies bentônicas desempenham um papel importante no ambiente marinho, e estudar a diversidade desses organismos que vivem associados ao fundo é indispensável para compreender o funcionamento do meio ambiente. A macrofauna, meiofauna, e microorganismos associados aos fundos consolidado e inconsolidado foram listados, e informações adicionais foram fornecidas para cada espécie, tais como a distribuição geográfica e nos habitats. O checklist inclui 826 espécies, quase 70% registradas durante o projeto BIOTA/Araçá. Os taxa mais especiosos foram os anelídeos (225 spp.), moluscos (194 spp.), e crustáceos (177 spp.). Entre as espécies bentônicas listadas, sete são endêmicas da Baía do Araçá, 14 são consideradas ameaçadas de extinção, e sete são exploradas economicamente. Abstract Increasing habitat modification and species loss demand consistent efforts to describe and understand biodiversity patterns. The BIOTA/FAPESP Program was created in this context and it has been a successful initiative to promote studies on biodiversity and conservation in Brazil. The BIOTA/Araçá is an interdisciplinary project that provided a detailed evaluation of the biodiversity of Araçá Bay, a coastal seascape located on the North coast of the state of São Paulo, Southeast Brazil. The bay encompasses multiple habitats, such as beaches, mangroves, rocky shores, and a tidal flat, and provides important ecosystem services. Unfortunately, the bay is the subject of complex social-environmental conflicts that oppose economic, social, and environmental demands (i.e., the expansion of neighboring harbor activities vs. small-scale artisanal fisheries and protection of biodiversity). The present study presents a survey of the benthic species occurring in the different habitats of Araçá Bay, including data obtained during the BIOTA/Araçá project and previous assessments of the area. The benthic species play an important role in marine environments and studying the diversity of these organisms that live associated with the bottom is indispensable for comprehending the environment’s functioning. The macrofauna, meiofauna, and microorganisms associated with soft and hard bottom were listed, and additional information, such as the habitat and geographical distribution, were provided for each species. The checklist includes 826 species, almost 70% recorded during the BIOTA/Araçá project. The most speciose taxa were the annelids (225 spp.), mollusks (194 spp.), and crustaceans (177 spp.). Seven benthic species are endemic to Araçá Bay, 14 are considered threatened, and seven are economically exploited. Furthermore, the bay is the type locality of many taxa, and 11 new benthic species were described based on specimens sampled during the project. ABSTRACT: In the last decade, there has been a significant increase in the demand for small rodents such as hamsters, guinea pigs, rats, and mice to be kept as pets. Consequently, the veterinary care provided to these animals has also increased. The aim of this study was to describe gross, histopathological and immunohistochemical findings of 26 spontaneous neoplasms diagnosed in 25 pet rodents in Northeastern Brazil. A retrospective study was carried out from 2014 to 2022 in two veterinary diagnostic laboratories to identify cases of tumoriform lesions in these species. Hamsters represented the most frequent species in this study (60%, 15/25), followed by rats (28%, 7/25), guinea pigs (8%, 2/25), and mice (4%, 1/25), with a mean age of 17.63 months. The anatomical regions of the face/head and thoracic region were the most affected. The most affected tissues were the skin/subcutaneous/mucosal (65%, 15/26) and mammary gland (23%, 6/26). Eighteen different types of neoplasms were diagnosed, and T-cell lymphomas and mammary adenocarcinomas were the most diagnosed tumors, each corresponding to 12% (3/26) of the cases. Leiomyosarcoma, myxosarcoma and mammary adenocarcinoma metastases were also noted. Immunohistochemistry was essential for the diagnosis of certain malignant mesenchymal and round-cell neoplasms. Pet rodent neoplasms in Northeastern Brazil are common, especially in hamsters, and immunohistochemistry can be a useful tool for the definitive diagnosis of these tumors. RESUMO: O objetivo deste estudo foi descrever os achados patológicos e as causas da icterícia em 44 gatos (Felis catus), durante um período de seis anos. Os gatos eram provenientes de duas regiões metropolitanas brasileiras; 34,1% eram fêmeas, 56,8% eram machos e 9,1% não tinham informação sobre o sexo. A idade variou de 6 meses a 13 anos. A maioria dos gatos examinados era de raça mista (40/44), enquanto os restantes eram Angorá (2/44), Oriental de pelo curto (1/44) e Persa (1/44). Todos os gatos apresentavam icterícia leve a acentuada e 39 foram diagnosticados com anemia discreta a grave. A classificação dos tipos de icterícia (pré-hepática, hepática e pós-hepática) baseou-se em achados macroscópicos e microscópicos. Dos 44 animais, 10 foram classificados como icterícia pré-hepática, 33 com icterícia hepática e sete com icterícia pós-hepática. Contudo, em alguns gatos, foram encontrados dois tipos de icterícia, cinco dos quais foram classificados como icterícia pré-hepática e hepática e um caso como icterícia hepática e pós-hepática. De acordo com os achados macroscópicos e microscópicos, a causa da icterícia pré-hepática foi anemia hemolítica idiopática. A causa mais frequente de ícterícia hepática foi a lipidose hepática (26/44), seguida de peri-hepatite e hepatite compatível com peritonite infecciosa felina, linfoma, degeneração glicogênica, colangiocarcinoma e leucemia mieloide metastática. Nos gatos com icterícia pós-hepática, as causas incluíram colangite devida a infecção por Platynosomum spp., colangioma do ducto hepático comum e colangite crônica. Atualmente, a compreensão da etiopatogenia da icterícia requer um estudo clínico-patológico preciso e causas concomitantes da doença em gatos devem ser consideradas. ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to describe the pathological findings and causes of jaundice in 44 cats (Felis catus) over a six-year period. The cats were from two Brazilian metropolitan areas: 34.1% were female, 56.8% were male, and 9.1% had no information regarding their sex. Their ages ranged from 6 months to 13 years. Most of the cats examined were of a mixed breed (40/44), whereas the others were Angora (2/44), Oriental Short Hair (1/44) and Persian (1/44). All animals had mild to marked jaundice, and 39 were diagnosed with mild to marked anemia. The classification of icterus types (pre-hepatic, hepatic and post-hepatic) was based on gross and microscopic findings. Of the 44 animals, 10 were classified as pre-hepatic icterus, 33 with hepatic icterus and seven with post-hepatic icterus. In some cats, two types of icterus were found, of which five were classified as pre-hepatic and hepatic icterus, and one case was hepatic and post-hepatic icterus. According to the gross and microscopic findings, the cause of pre-hepatic icterus was idiopathic hemolytic anemia. The most frequent cause of hepatic icterus was hepatic lipidosis (26/44), followed by perihepatitis and hepatitis compatible with feline infectious peritonitis, lymphoma, glycogenic degeneration, cholangiocarcinoma and metastatic myeloid leukemia. In animals with post-hepatic icterus, the causes included cholangitis due to Platynosomum spp. infection, cholangioma of the common hepatic duct, and chronic cholangitis. Understanding the etiopathogenesis of jaundice requires an accurate clinic-pathological study and concomitant causes of the disease in cats should be considered. Abstract: Psychosocial evaluations are rarely conducted with community-dwelling individuals, especially those with higher risk of cardiovascular disease. This study aims to evaluate the perceptual stress and cardiovascular risk among women in a large cross-sectional study performed in Brazilian communities. Subjects aged over 18 years were included out of 500 public basic health units (BHU) in Brazil. All subjects were subjected to a clinical consultation and questionnaires application. Data were used to identify healthy lifestyle, smoking status, and self-perception of psychological stress. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) risk score (NRS) was used to estimate cardiovascular risk. Ethnicity information was self-reported, considering white versus non-white (black, brown, and mixed-race) women. A total of 93,605 patients were recruited from a primary care setting, of which 62,200 (66.4%) were women. Intense and severe auto-perception of stress was higher within non-white women at home (p < 0.001), at work (p = 0.008), socially (p < 0.001), and financially (p < 0.001) compared to white women. Therefore, the NRS indicates that non-white women had higher cardiovascular risk, lower physical activity, and lower daily vegetables/fruits consumption compared to white women (p < 0.001). Non-white women in Brazilian communities are susceptible to increased stress and cardiovascular disease risk, which adds up to disparities in access to the public health system. Resumo A nutrição na criação de coelhos representa cerca de 70% de todos os custos; nesse sentido, a Cratylia argentea é uma excelente alternativa como alimento devido à sua composição bromatológica. Nosso objetivo foi avaliar o valor nutricional de dietas formuladas com folhas secas de C. argentea na alimentação de coelhos em crescimento. Foram utilizados 28 coelhos brancos da raça Nova Zelândia, com 55 dias de idade, de ambos os sexos. Dois tratamentos (n = 14, 7 machos e 7 fêmeas) foram avaliados em delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 2 x 2. A dieta controle (CTRL) foi formulada para atender às exigências nutricionais de coelhos em crescimento, e a dieta teste (DRY) foi obtida substituindo 20% da dieta CTRL por folhas secas de C. argentea. O período experimental compreendeu 11 dias, sendo sete dias de adaptação e quatro dias de coleta total de fezes. O ganho médio diário, o consumo de matéria seca, a conversão alimentar e o peso corporal final não foram afetados pela substituição da dieta CTRL por folhas secas de C. argentea. O coeficiente de digestibilidade da matéria seca apresentou melhores resultados nos coelhos CTRL (Fêmea: 72,19%, Macho: 72,48%). Coelhos alimentados com a dieta CTRL apresentaram maior consumo de proteína bruta do que os alimentados com a dieta DRY, porém esses coelhos tiveram maior excreção e menor retenção de proteína bruta. Abstract Nutrition in rabbit farming accounts for about 70% of all costs; in this sense, C. argentea is an excellent alternative as a feed, due to its bromatological composition. Our goal is to evaluate the nutritional value of diets formulated with the dried leaves of C. argentea to feed growing rabbits. Twenty-eight white rabbits of the New Zealand breed, 55 days old, of both sexes, were used. Two treatments (n = 14, 7 males, and 7 females) were evaluated in a randomized block experimental design in a 2 x 2 factorial scheme. The control diet (CTRL) was formulated to meet the nutritional requirements of growing rabbits, and the test diet (DRY) was obtained by replacing 20% of the CTRL diet with dried leaves of C. argentea. The experimental period was comprised of 11 days, with seven days of adaptation and four days of total feces collection. The average daily gain, dry matter intake, feed conversion, and final body weight were not affected by replacing the CTRL diet with the dried leaves of C. argentea. The coefficient of dry matter digestibility showed better results in CTRL rabbits (female: 72.19%, male: 72.48%). Rabbits fed with the CTRL diet exhibited a higher consumption of crude protein compared to those fed with the DRY diet, however, these rabbits showed higher elimination and lower retention of crude protein.
