RESUMO: Protocolos que induzem à lactação artificial em vacas e novilhas são eficazes e estão comercialmente disponíveis no Brasil. No entanto, esses protocolos demandam longos tratamentos hormonais, o que é discutível visto que poucas pesquisas foram feitas sobre o assunto. Para entender melhor os protocolos de indução artificial à lactação (IAL), realizamos dois experimentos. Foi testada a hipótese de que um protocolo curto (oito dias) de IAL é tão eficiente quanto o protocolo padrão de 15 dias. No experimento 1 objetivou-se caracterizar o perfil esteroidal durante um protocolo de IAL e avaliou-se os perfis séricos de estradiol (E2) e progesterona (P4) de vacas Jersey (n=6) submetidas a um protocolo convencional. No experimento 2 foram comparadas a produção de leite e as concentrações séricas de E2 de novilhas holandesas induzidas à lactação pelo protocolo padrão de IAL (15 injeções de E2 e 8 injeções de P4) e por um protocolo curto, no qual o número de injeções de E2 e, consequentemente, a dosagem geral de E2 foram reduzidas (oito injeções de E2 e oito injeções de P4). ABSTRACT: Protocols to artificially induce cows and heifers into lactation are effective and commercially available in Brazil. However, these protocols demand long hormonal treatments, which is debatable since little research has been done in the subject. To further understand artificial induction to lactation (AIL) protocols, we conducted two experiments. In experiment 1, our objective was to better characterize steroidal profile during an AIL protocol and assess the estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4) serum profiles of Jersey cows (n=6) subjected to a conventional protocol. In experiment 2, we aimed to compare milk production and serum E2 concentrations of Holstein heifers induced into lactation by the standard AIL protocol (15 injections of E2 and 8 P4 injections) and by a short protocol in which the number of E2 injections and, consequently, the overall dosage of E2, were reduced (8 injections of E2 and 8 P4 injections). Abstract Background: In this experimental protocol, we evaluated the immediate and delayed repair of the buccal branch of the facial nerve (BBFN) with heterologous fibrin biopolymer (HFB) as a coaptation medium and the use of photobiomodulation (PBM), performing functional and histomorphometric analysis of the BBFN and perioral muscles. Methods: Twenty-eight rats were divided into eight groups using the BBFN bilaterally (the left nerve was used for PBM), namely: G1 - control group, right BBFN (without injury); G2 - control group, left BBFN (without injury + PBM); G3 - Denervated right BBFN (neurotmesis); G4 - Denervated left BBFN (neurotmesis + PBM); G5 - Immediate repair of right BBFN (neurotmesis + HFB); G6 - Immediate repair of left BBFN (neurotmesis + HFB + PBM); G7 - Delayed repair of right BBFN (neurotmesis + HFB); G8 - Delayed repair of left BBFN (neurotmesis + HFB + PBM). Delayed repair occurred after two weeks of denervation. All animals were sacrificed after six weeks postoperatively. Results: In the parameters of the BBFN, we observed inferior results in the groups with delayed repair, in relation to the groups with immediate repair, with a significant difference (p < 0.05) in the diameter of the nerve fiber, the axon, and the thickness of the myelin sheath of the group with immediate repair with PBM compared to the other experimental groups. In measuring the muscle fiber area, groups G7 (826.4 ± 69.90) and G8 (836.7 ± 96.44) were similar to G5 (882.8 ± 70.51). In the functional analysis, the G7 (4.10 ± 0.07) and G8 (4.12 ± 0.08) groups presented normal parameters. Conclusion: We demonstrated that delayed repair of BBFN is possible with HFB, but with worse results compared to immediate repair, and that PBM has a positive influence on nerve regeneration results in immediate repair. Resumo O pé diabético corresponde a uma interação entre fatores anatômicos, vasculares e neurológicos que representam um desafio na prática clínica. O objetivo deste trabalho foi compilar as principais evidências científicas com base em uma revisão das principais diretrizes, além de artigos publicados nas plataformas Embase, Lilacs e PubMed. O sistema da Sociedade Européia de Cardiologia foi utilizado para desenvolver classes de recomendação e níveis de evidência. Abstract The diabetic foot interacts with anatomical, vascular, and neurological factors that challenge clinical practice. This study aimed to compile the primary scientific evidence based on a review of the main guidelines, in addition to articles published on the Embase, Lilacs, and PubMed platforms. RESUMO O cultivo comercial de goiabeira (Psidium guajava L.) ocorre em todas as regiões brasileiras, onde moscas-das-frutas causam perdas diretas na produção e afetam as exportações de frutas frescas devido a restrições quarentenárias. Objetivou-se determinar a incidência, diversidade e flutuações populacionais de espécies de moscas frugívoras que infestam goiabeira e levantar seus parasitoides associados, no estado do Espírito Santo, Brasil. Frutos e moscas capturadas por armadilhas foram amostrados em três regiões produtoras de goiaba. Anastrepha fraterculus (Wied.) foi a principal espécie associada a goiabeiras, principalmente na região litorânea. Anastrepha chiclayae foi registrada pela primeira vez associada a goiabeiras no Brasil. Medfly não foi uma espécie importante. Neosilba zadolicha foi a espécie de Lonchaeidae mais comum, mas com baixa importância. Maiores populações de moscas frugívoras foram encontradas em regiões quentes e úmidas. Dois picos populacionais de A. fraterculus foram observados em outubro (primavera) e de março a abril (verão-outono). Tefritídeos ocorreram em todas as regiões pesquisadas, com maiores infestações na área litorânea, seguida da norte e serrana, respectivamente. Doryctobracon areolatus e Aganaspis pelleranoi foram as espécies de parasitoides mais comuns; no entanto, o controle biológico natural de moscas frugívoras em goiabeira foi muito baixo e apresentou controle populacional de baixo impacto. ABSTRACT The commercial cultivation of guava tree (Psidium guajava L.) occurs in all Brazilian regions, where fruit flies cause direct losses to production and affect fresh fruit exports due to quarantine restrictions. This study aimed to determine the incidence, diversity and population fluctuations of frugivorous fly species that infest guava trees, as well as to survey their associated parasitoids, in the Espírito santo state, Brazil. Fruits and flies captured in traps were sampled in three guava-producing regions. Anastrepha fraterculus (Wied.) was the main species associated with guava trees, particularly in the coastal region. Anastrepha chiclayae was recorded for the first time associated with guava trees in Brazil. Medfly was not considered an important species. Neosilba zadolicha was the most common Lonchaeidae species collected, but with low importance. Higher populations of frugivorous flies were found in hot and humid areas. Two population peaks of A. fraterculus were observed during October (spring) and from March to April (summer-autumn). ABSTRACT In 2000, Cleide Costa published a paper presenting the state of knowledge of the Neotropical Coleopte ra, with a focus on the Brazilian fauna. Twenty-four years later, thanks to the development of the Coleoptera section of the Taxonomic Catalog of the Brazilian Fauna (CTFB - Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil) through the collaboration of 100 coleopterists from all over the globe, we can build on Costa’s work and present an updated overview of the state of knowledge of the beetles from Brazil. There are currently 35,699 species in 4,958 genera and 116 families known to occur in the country, including representatives of all extant suborders and superfamilies. Our data show that the Brazilian beetle fauna is the richest on the planet, concentrating 9% of the world species diversity, with some estimates accounting to up to 15% of the global total. The most diverse family in numbers of genera is Cerambycidae (1,056 genera), while in number of species it is Chrysomelidae (6,079 species). Conotrachelus Dejean, 1835 (Curculionidae) is the most species-rich genus, with 570 species. The French entomologist Maurice Pic is the author who has contributed the most to the naming of species recorded from Brazil, with 1,794 valid names in 36 families, whereas the Brazilians Ubirajara R. Martins and Maria Helena M. Galileo are the only ones among the top-ten authors to have named species in the 21st century. Abstract The Cachoeirinha Sn ± (Nb-Ta) deposit is an important producer of the Rondônia Tin Province. It is inserted in the regional unit named Rondônia Intrusive Suite (995–956 Ma) and hosts granular accumulations of columbite group minerals (CGM) embedded in thick Cenozoic colluvial-alluvial covers. Cachoeirinha CGM have subrounded to angular grains, with irregular to regular internal zoning, micro-inclusion, and exsolution features. They have columbite-(Fe) as the dominant mineral phase, with variation in the Ta/(Ta+Nb) ratio and with Sn, Ti, W, U, Ba, Cr, REE, and V as chemical impurities. It has high total REE content (LREEN depleted, HREEN enriched, Ce and Eu anomalies), δ18O = 2.78‰, and with two U-Pb age groups: 1052 ± 6 and 909 ± 7 Ma. This information indicates that physicochemical oscillations favored the ionic substitutions and resorption mechanisms between Nb ↔ Ta, as well as coupled substitutions with the entry of geochemical impurities, according to the equation: 3(Sn, Ti, U, Si)4+ + (W, Cr)6+ ↔ 2(V, Nb, Ta)5+ + 2(Al, REE)3+ + (Fe, Mn, Ba)2+, at the temperature range between 400° and 500°C. Finally, the Cachoeirinha Sn ± (Nb-Ta) alluvial deposit host ore is related to at least two Neo-Mesoproterozoic magmatic pulses. Resumo A grande maioria das doenças do sistema nervoso central apresenta alto sinal em ponderações T2 na ressonância magnética. As alterações com baixo sinal são menos comuns, de forma que essa característica permite estreitar o diagnóstico diferencial. Analisamos, retrospectivamente, pacientes com imagens de ressonância magnética de crânio e/ou coluna em que este achado foi útil na investigação diagnóstica. Os pacientes foram selecionados no período entre 2015 e 2022 e todos tiveram seus diagnósticos confirmados por estudo clinicorradiológico ou por estudo histopatológico. Obtivemos imagens de 14 pacientes com as seguintes afecções: malformação arteriovenosa, cavernoma, metástase de linfoma, meduloblastoma, tumor embrionário, metástase de melanoma, cisto da bolsa de Rathke, doença de Erdheim-Chester, aspergilose, paracoccidioidomicose, tuberculose, sífilis, doença relacionada à IgG4 e metástase de tumor neuroendócrino de pulmão. Descrevemos lesões de diversas origens etiológicas que, a partir de suas características nas imagens ponderadas em T2, foi possível reduzir o quadro de diagnósticos diferenciais e chegar mais facilmente à hipótese final. Abstract The majority of central nervous system diseases show high signal intensity on T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging. Diseases of the central nervous system with low signal intensity are less common, which makes it a finding that helps narrow the differential diagnosis. This was a retrospective analysis of brain and spine magnetic resonance imaging examinations in which that finding was helpful in the diagnostic investigation. We selected the cases of patients examined between 2015 and 2022. All diagnoses were confirmed on the basis of the clinical-radiological correlation or the histopathological findings. We obtained images of 14 patients with the following central nervous system diseases: arteriovenous malformation; cavernous malformation; metastasis from lymphoma; medulloblastoma; embryonal tumor; metastasis from melanoma; Rathke’s cleft cyst; Erdheim-Chester disease; aspergillosis; paracoccidioidomycosis; tuberculosis; syphilis; immunoglobulin G4-related disease; and metastasis from a pulmonary neuroendocrine tumor. We described lesions of different etiologies in which the T2-weighted imaging profile helped narrow the differential diagnosis and facilitated the definitive diagnosis. ABSTRACT Objective Currently programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) inhibitors in combination with other therapies are being evaluated to determine their efficacy in cancer treatment. However, the effect of PD-ligand (L) 1 expression on disease outcomes in stage III (EC III) non-small cell lung cancer is not completely understood. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the influence of PD-L1 expression on the outcomes of EC III non-small cell lung cancer. Methods This study was conducted on patients diagnosed with EC III non-small cell lung cancer who underwent treatment at a tertiary care hospital. PD-L1 expression was determined using immunohistochemical staining, all patients expressed PD-L1. Survival was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. Relationships between variables were assessed using Cox proportional regression models. Results A total of 49 patients (median age=69 years) with EC III non-small cell lung cancer and PD-L1 expression were evaluated. More than half of the patients were men, and most were regular smokers. The patients were treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy, surgery, or sequential or combined chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The median progression-free survival of the entire cohort was 14.2 months, and the median overall survival was 20 months. There was no significant association between PD-L1 expression and disease progression, clinical characteristics, or overall survival. Conclusions PD-L1 expression was not correlated with EC III non-small cell lung cancer outcomes. Whether these findings differ from the association with immune checkpoint inhibitors remains to be addressed in future studies. ABSTRACT Objective This study aimed to evaluate inflammatory biomarkers in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis and investigate their association with all-cause mortality or transfer to hemodialysis. Methods This prospective cohort study included 43 patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis. Plasma levels of cytokines were measured using flow cytometry and capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Biomarkers were categorized based on their respective median values. Survival analysis was conducted using the Kaplan-Meier estimator, considering two outcomes: all-cause mortality and transfer to hemodialysis. Results After adjusting for confounding factors, plasma levels above the median of the levels of CCL2 and plasma, as well as below the median of TNF-α, and the median of dialysate IL-17 levels, were associated with an increased risk of experiencing the specified outcomes after approximately 16 months of follow-up. ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. RESUMO Este trabalho se insere no contexto de análise de imagens, visando a extração automática de informações complexas com alta precisão. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o desempenho de redes neurais convolucionais na classificação de imagens de concreto em duas classes: (a) não fissuradas e (b) fissuradas. Para tanto, foram empregadas as redes profundas VGG16, VGG19 e ResNet50 com aprendizagem por transferência por meio de ajuste fino. As redes foram treinadas novamente e testadas usando um banco de dados de 40.000 imagens. Após o treinamento, as redes foram testadas, alcançando uma precisão impressionante entre 99,27% e 99,78%. Este alto nível de precisão inspira confiança no uso destes modelos preditivos. Para avaliar a robustez dos modelos, foram gerados gradientes visuais dos pontos focais de atenção das redes nas imagens, mostrando que os modelos focam e capturam aspectos das fotos que realmente caracterizam as fissuras. ABSTRACT This paper is inserted in the context of image analysis, aiming at the automatic extraction of complex information with high precision. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of convolutional neural networks in classifying concrete images into two classes: (a) non-cracked and (b) cracked. For this purpose, VGG16, VGG19, and ResNet50 deep networks were employed with transfer learning through fine-tuning. The networks were re-trained and tested using a database of 40,000 images. After training, the networks were tested, achieving an impressive accuracy between 99.27% and 99.78%. This high accuracy level inspires confidence in using these predictive models. To assess the robustness of the models, visual gradients of the networksʼ attention focal points on the images were generated, showing that the models focus on and capture aspects of the photos that truly characterize the cracks. RESUMO O monitoramento ambiental da água é essencial para uma gestão eficiente da conservação dos mananciais em Bacias Hidrográficas. Contudo, faltam estudos com esta sinergia aplicando técnicas não convencionais. Avaliamos características químicas das águas superficiais e subterrâneas (2021-2022), incluindo pela primeira vez analise da composição isotópica de amostras de águas coletadas de fontes hídricas ao longo da Bacia do Educandos, na cidade de Manaus- AM/Brasil, para avaliar as alterações química-isotópica diante dos impactos antropogênicos. Foram utilizadas análises estatísticas para comparação de médias, análises gráficas e de componentes Principais para identificar os principais padrões dos conjuntos de dados. Nossos resultados demostraram aumento significativo no pH, condutividade elétrica e aumento de nitratos em águas subterrânea poluída e redução do OD nas águas poluídas superficiais. Além disso, a assinatura isotópica não indicou poluição através das mudanças da composição isotópica de águas naturais e poluídas, porém mostrou assinaturas mais empobrecidas em um dos poços subterrâneos de monitoramento, indicando um local de impacto vulnerável à interação de águas do aquífero com Rio Negro ou com Igarapé. Ao analisar os parâmetros químicos com a composição isotópica permite melhor entendimento dos mecanismos de circulação e mineralização das águas subterrâneas e superficiais em Bacia Hidrográfica Urbana. ABSTRACT Environmental monitoring of water is essential for efficient management of water source conservation in river basins. However, there is a lack of studies with this synergy applying unconventional techniques. We evaluated chemical characteristics of surface and underground waters (2021-2022), including for the first time the analysis of the isotopic composition of waters collected from water sources throughout Educandos`s Basin, in the city of Manaus-AM/Brazil, to evaluate chemical-isotopic changes in the view of anthropogenic impacts. Statistical analyzes were used to compare means, graphical analyzes and Principal Component Analysis to identify the main patterns of the data sets. Our results demonstrated a significant increase in pH, electrical conductivity and an increased in nitrates in polluted groundwater and reduced DO in contaminated surface waters. Furthermore, the isotopic signature did not indicate pollution through changes in the isotopic composition of natural and polluted waters, however, it showed more depleted signatures in one of the underground monitoring wells, indicating an impact site vulnerable to the interaction of aquifer waters with Rio Negro and Igarapé. RESUMO O presente trabalho objetivou avaliar o desempenho de algoritmos de aprendizado de máquinas na predição da resistência à compressão de argamassas. A base de dados foi criada através de uma busca bibliográfica de mais de 50 referências que foram catalogadas para conter dados de dosagens de argamassa com ou sem adição de resíduos de construção e demolição (RCD). O conjunto de dados avaliado passou por um pré-processamento de integração dos dados de resíduo de construção e demolição, e normalização. Como normalização optou-se pelo uso da técnica z-score. Em seguida, os algoritmos de Aprendizado de Máquina (AM): regressões linear e polinomial, árvores de decisão, ensembles e redes neurais foram utilizados para a predição da resistência à compressão. O conjunto de dados foi separado em 80% para treino e validação e 20% para teste. A validação cruzada empregada foi do tipo k-fold com 10 divisões no subconjunto de treino. Avaliando o desempenho dos modelos o algoritmo tipo ensemble Gradient Boosting apresentou o melhor desempenho quando comparado aos demais, atingindo um valor superior a 90% no coeficiente de determinação. Por fim, conclui-se que o AM é uma ferramenta prática importante na predição da resistência à compressão de argamassas. Além disso, o modelo de inteligência artificial foi prototipado para uso da comunidade científica e técnica em uma versão web disponível através do framework Streamlit da linguagem Python. argamassas 5 RCD. ABSTRACT The present work aimed to evaluate the performance of machine learning algorithms in predicting the compressive strength of mortars. The database was created through a bibliographic search of more than 50 references that were cataloged to contain data on mortar dosages with or without the addition of construction waste. The dataset used in the experiments underwent preprocessing, which included the integration of construction and demolition waste data and normalization. For normalization, the z-score technique was chosen. Then, the algorithms, linear regressions, decision trees, ensembles, and neural networks were used to predict compressive strength. The dataset was separated into 80% for training and validation and 20% for testing. The cross-validation was of the k-fold type with ten divisions in the training subset. Evaluating the performance of the models, the ensemble Gradient Boosting algorithm showed the best performance when compared to the others, reaching a value greater than 89% in the coefficient of determination. Finally, it is concluded that Machine Learning (ML) is a practical calculation tool for predicting the compressive strength of mortars.
