This study presents a solution to solid waste problems, focusing on spent lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) and iron ore tailings (IOT) from the Mariana environmental accident in Brazil. The approach involves the production CoFe2O4 from LiBs and IOT, which serves as a catalyst for solar photo-Fenton reactions for methylene blue (MB) decolorization and as an electrochemical sensor for ascorbic acid (AA) detection. Chemical analysis showed recycling potential, with 45.22 ± 0.22% m m−1 Co from LiBs and 14.9 ± 1.5% m m−1 Fe from IOT, determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP OES) and flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The sol-gel synthesized CoFe2O4 exhibited a crystallite size of 51.9 ± 1.3 nm and agglomerated crystal clusters. Recycled-CoFe2O4 exhibited a 98.1% MB decolorization efficiency in 60 min under solar irradiation and remained above 92.3% in all 7 reuse cycles. The electrochemical sensor exhibited a coefficient of determination of 0.9987, a sensitivity of 3.352 ± 0.0428 μA mol L−1, and a limit of detection of 0.5511 µM in the concentration range of 1.96 to 23.08 mmol L−1 for AA detection. ABSTRACT: In the state of Amazonas, the ‘Pêra’ orange scion is traditionally cultivated on ‘Rangpur’ lime tree. The restricted use of a single scion-rootstock combination has left local orchards vulnerable to adverse conditions and incidence of pests and diseases, which may negatively interfere with both productivity and fruit quality and the citrus activity sustainability in the state. The expansion of the number of scion-rootstock combinations becomes a viable alternative to overcome such problems. To meet this demand from citrus growers, 30 combinations with 10 scions and 3 rootstocks were evaluated in the sixth and seventh year after planting seedlings in the field in the municipality of Rio Preto da Eva, AM. In this experiment, productivity, juice yield, soluble solids, pH, titratable acidity, ratio and technological index were evaluated. ‘Pineapple’ scion with ‘Sunki Tropical’ and ‘BRS Bravo’ rootstocks can be productive alternatives in relation to traditional ‘Pêra’ orange scion under ‘Rangpur’ lime combination in the state of Amazonas. ‘Lima’ orange with ‘Sunki Tropical’ mandarin, ‘Rangpur lime SC’ and ‘BRS Bravo’ lime rootstocks can be alternatives for the fresh market in the state. RESUMO: No estado do Amazonas cultiva-se, tradicionalmente, a laranjeira ‘Pêra’ sobre o limoeiro ‘Cravo’. O uso restrito de uma única combinação de copa-porta-enxerto tem deixado os pomares locais vulneráveis à condições adversas e a incidência de pragas e doenças, podendo interferir negativamente tanto na produtividade como na qualidade dos frutos e sustentabilidade citrícola do Estado. A ampliação do número de combinações-copas-porta-enxertos torna-se uma alternativa viável para superar tais problemas. Para atender a esta demanda dos produtores de citros foram avaliadas 30 combinações com 10 copas e três porta-enxertos no sexto e sétimo ano após o plantio das mudas no campo, no município de Rio Preto da Eva, AM. Nesse experimento foram avaliadas: a produtividade, o rendimento de suco, os sólidos solúveis, o pH, a acidez titulável, o ratio e o índice tecnológico. A copa ‘Pineapple’ com os porta-enxertos tangerineira ‘Sunki Tropical’ e ‘BRS Bravo’ podem ser alternativas produtivas em relação a tradicional combinação laranja ‘Pêra’ sob limoeiro ‘Cravo’ no Amazonas. ABSTRACT Biochar can promote crop production and soil quality. However, its characteristics depend on the waste used in its production and its effects may vary according to the species being cultivated and the management adopted. The aim of this study was to evaluate the application of biochar from animal waste on soil quality and the agronomic characteristics of the cowpea. An experiment was set up to test three types of biochar (bovine-BB, swine-SB and poultry-BP), with added fertiliser (BBF, SBF and BPF) and two control treatments, including the addition of calcium magnesium oxide (CT) and calcium magnesium oxide with fertiliser (CTF), giving a total of eight treatments with four replications. There was a respective increase of up to 102.94%, 1048%, 1560% and 360.22% in stem diameter, number of pods, number of grains per pod and stem dry matter from adding the biochar. The poultry biochar increased each of the above parameters even with no added fertiliser. There was no difference in basal soil respiration or β-glucosidase enzyme activity, whereas organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), microbial carbon and soil labile carbon were greater with biochar. BBF gave the highest TOC content (24.40 g kg-1), while BP and BPF increased TN by around 61%. The application of biochar + fertiliser contributed to an average reduction of 56% in the soil metabolic quotient. Poultry biochar favoured both the agronomic characteristics of the cowpea and soil quality, while bovine biochar showed more marked results with the addition of fertiliser. This paper presents the stages of an acceleration program focused on chemical technologies. We demonstrate how this initiative contributes to the creation of new businesses, startups, and technology licensing from research developed at Brazilian universities. The case of the program Escale-se is discussed. There were 66 technologies submitted, and 14 were selected for the pre-acceleration phase. In this phase, various contents were worked on, such as creating a business model and aspects of scaling hard-science technologies. Teams were evaluated by panels with market specialists, and 6 were selected for the second phase: pre-scaling/proof of concept. Here, proponents were encouraged to validate the business model by connecting with potential clients and partners, as well as planning the development and testing of the product in a relevant environment. Finally, one team was classified for the last stage: scaling/go-to-market - where they received R$ 100,000.00 to scale up their technology and create strategies for raising investments. Four of the fourteen technologies selected for the program opened National Register of Legal Entities (CNPJ) and raised approximately R$ 4.5 M in investments from different sources. ABSTRACT Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi increase water and nutrient absorption from the soil by plants. However, its benefits to plants vary depending on the inoculated species. This study aimed to determine the influence of different species of mycorrhizal fungi on the development and productivity of grain sorghum cultivars. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse in a completely randomized design in a 2 x 5 factorial scheme, consisting of two sorghum cultivars (BRS 310 and BRS 330) and five treatments (control without inoculation and four species of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi: Gigaspora margarita, Glomus formosanum, Acaulospora scrobiculata, and Scutellospora pellucida), with four replications. Plant height, stem diameter, leaf area, length, volume, specific surface area, root diameter, shoot dry mass, root dry mass, thousand-grain weight, grain productivity, colonization, dependence, and mycorrhizal efficiency were evaluated. The results showed that inoculation with the species S. pellucida induced higher root and shoot development of plants of the cultivar BRS 310, as well as higher productivity of sorghum grains. The cultivar BRS 330 showed higher root development when inoculated with the species G. formosanum and a higher shoot development when inoculated with the species A. scrobiculata. ABSTRACT Weed control is a challenge in crop management due to the limited number of registered herbicides, especially for preemergent application. This study aimed to investigate the selectivity of pre-emergent herbicides with different mechanisms of action for wheat. The experiment consisted of two stages: the first involved screening under greenhouse conditions, and the second assessing the selected treatments under field conditions, with a focus on crop yield. Plant phytointoxication, crop stand, and shoot dry weight were assessed in the greenhouse experiment, and tillering, crop stand, plant height, canopy closure, yield, 1000-grain weight, and hectoliter weight in the field. Under greenhouse conditions, [imazapic + imazapyr], pendimethalin, isoxaflutole, florpyrauxifen, and halosulfuron-methyl produced the best results and were selected for the field experiment. Florpyrauxifen was the only herbicide that was selective both in greenhouse and field experiments. Isoxaflutole and trifluralin did not damage wheat in any of the field evaluations. Despite reducing crop performance in some assessments, pendimethalin and flumioxazin provided yield, hectoliter weight, and 1000-grain weight results equivalent to the herbicide-free control. RESUMO Uma das dificuldades encontradas no manejo da cultura é o controle de plantas daninhas, pois existem poucas opções de herbicidas registrados, principalmente em pré-emergência. O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar a seletividade dos herbicidas préemergentes com diferentes mecanismos de ação para a cultura do trigo. Os experimentos foram divididos em duas etapas: na primeira, foi realizada uma seleção preliminar em casa de vegetação e na segunda, os tratamentos selecionados foram avaliados em campo, visando principalmente a produtividade da cultura. Em casa de vegetação foram avaliadas a fitointoxicação, o estande e a massa seca da parte aérea. Em condições de campo, foram avaliados o estande, o perfilhamento, a altura das plantas, o fechamento do dossel, o rendimento, a massa de mil grãos e o peso hectolitrico. Em estufa, [imazapic + imazapyr], pendimethalin, isoxaflutole, florpyrauxifen e halosulfuron-methyl apresentaram os melhores resultados e foram selecionados para os experimentos em condições de campo. Abstract Background Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a multisystem neurocutaneous syndrome with variable phenotypes. Recent updates of TSC diagnostic criteria reaffirmed the defined genetic diagnostic criterion as the finding of a pathogenic DNA alteration in either TSC1 or TSC2 genes. It also slightly modified definite clinical diagnostic criteria. TSC-associated skin lesions in infancy are important clinical signs to select individuals with possible TSC for a closer clinical follow-up and genetic testing. Objective To raise awareness of the updated TSC diagnosis criteria; to assess the frequency of skin lesions in TSC patients as well as the first dermatological presentation; and to associate the findings with either TSC1 or TSC2 mutations. Methods Observational cross-sectional study. Clinical and genetic data were retrospectively collected from 37 TSC patients from a Brazilian University Hospital. Patients with skin signs were examined and prospectively assessed for 12 months. Results The earliest cutaneous lesions were hypomelanotic macules, which together with angiofibromas were the most frequent dermatological lesions. The total pathogenic DNA alteration ratio between TSC2 and TSC1 genes was 8:1. The frequency of a TSC2 pathogenic variant was 10-fold greater in the presence of ungual fibromas. Study limitations Small sample and a limited number of patients with TSC1 pathogenic variants. Conclusion Clinicians should be knowledgeable about TSC updated diagnostic criteria. Objetivos: Investigar os fatores associados à disposição para conhecer o estado sorológico para a sífilis entre estudantes do ensino superior. Métodos: Estudo transversal e analítico realizado com estudantes do ensino superior de Portugal. A coleta de dados ocorreu por meio de questionário on- line. Os dados foram analisados pela regressão logística de Poisson com variância robusta, utilizando o SPSS-24. Resultados: Incluídos 413 estudantes, maioria do sexo feminino, idade média de 20,5 anos e matriculada em cursos de saúde. Observou -se vulnerabilidades comportamentais como não uso do preservativo e uso de álcool/outras drogas; baixa percepção de risco e conhecimento ruim sobre sífilis. Menos da metade dos estudantes se dispuseram a realizar o teste para sífilis. Conclusões: A adesão ao rastreio para sífilis foi baixa e associada a fatores incomuns como menor conhecimento, baixa percepção de risco, menor idade e número de parcerias sexuais e frequentar cursos de áreas diferentes da saúde.

Objectives: To investigate the factors associated with the willingness to know the serological status for syphilis among higher education students. Methods: A cross-sectional and analytical study was conducted with higher education students in Portugal. Data collection was carried out through an online questionnaire. The data were analyzed using Poisson logistic regression with robust variance, utilizing SPSS-24. Results: A total of 413 students were included, the majority of whom were female, with an average age of 20.5 years, and enrolled in health-related courses. Behavioral vulnerabilities such as not using condoms and using alcohol/other drugs were observed; there was also a low-risk perception and poor knowledge about syphilis. Less than half of the students were willing to undergo the syphilis test. Conclusions: Adherence to syphilis screening was low and associated with uncommon factors such as lower knowledge, low risk perception, younger age, fewer sexual partnerships, and enrollment in courses outside the health field.

Observar vulnerabilidades de comportamiento como no usar condones y consumir alcohol u otras drogas; baja percepción de riesgo y escaso conocimiento sobre la sífilis. Menos de la mitad de los estudiantes estaban dispuestos a realizar la prueba de sífilis. Conclusiones: La adherencia al tamizaje de sífilis fue baja y se asoció con factores obvios como menor conocimiento, baja percepción de riesgo, menor edad y número de parejas sexuales y asistencia a cursos en áreas distintas a la salud.

RESUMO A cor e a rugosidade de superfície das restaurações estéticas estão relacionadas ao sucesso clínico e manutenção destes tratamentos ao longo do tempo. Objetivo Este estudo avaliou a influência de sistemas de acabamento e polimento e meios de armazenamento na rugosidade superficial e estabilidade de cor de compósitos restauradores de alta estética. Materiais e Método Foram preparados espécimes cilíndricos de acordo com os fatores em estudo (n=10): 1. Tipo de resina composta (nanoparticulada- Filtek Z350XT, suprananoparticulada- Estelite Omega, nanohíbrida- Empress Direct); 2. Tipo de sistemas de acabamento e polimento (sem polimento, discos de óxido de alumínio ou borrachas abrasivas); e 3. Tipo de meio de imersão (água ou café, 3 h/dia/30 dias). A rugosidade superficial (Ra - μm) e a estabilidade de cor (L, ΔEab e ΔE00) foram avaliadas no início (pós-polimento) e no final (pós-imersão na solução). Os dados foram submetidos aos testes de Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney, Wilcoxon e Student-Newman-Keuls (α=0,05). Resultados As resinas compostas nanohíbrida (p>0,001) e suprananoparticulada (p=0,004) apresentaram aumento em Ra pós-polimento, independentemente do sistema de acabamento e polimento. Em relação ao pós-polimento após imersão em café, a composta nanoparticulada mostrou os maiores valores de rugosidade (p=0,032). Os valores de L aumentaram para todas as resinas pós-polimento (p>0,05). A resina suprananoparticulada apresentou a maior estabilidade de cor com os menores valores de ΔEab e ΔE00. Conclusão Os sistemas de acabamento e polimento tiveram impacto na rugosidade superficial e estabilidade de cor de todos os compósitos estéticos, e sua eficácia depende do tipo de resina composta.

Aim This study evaluated the influence of finishing and polishing systems, and storage media on the surface roughness and color stability of aesthetic restorative composites. Materials and Method Cylindrical specimens (n=10) were prepared and treated according to: 1. Type of composite resin (nanofilled- Filtek Z350XT, suprananofilled- Estelite Omega, nanohybrid- Empress Direct); 2. Type of finishing and polishing systems (no polishing, aluminum oxide discs or abrasive rubber polishers); and 3. Type of immersion medium (water or coffee, 3 h/day/30 days). Surface roughness (Ra - μm) and color stability (L, ΔEab, and ΔE00) were evaluated at baseline (after polishing) and final time (after immersion). Data were subjected to Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney, Wilcoxon, and Student- Newman-Keuls tests (α=0.05). Results Nanohybrid (p>0.001) and suprananofilled composite resins (p=0.004) showed an increase in Ra after polishing, regardless the finishing and polishing system. After immersion in coffee, the nanofilled composite had the highest roughness values (p=0.032). L values increased for all resins after polishing (p>0.05). Suprananofilled composites had the greatest color stability with the lowest values of ΔEab and ΔE00. Conclusions Finishing and polishing systems had an impact on the surface roughness and color stability of all aesthetic resins, and their effectiveness depended on the type of composite resin.

Resumo A acne é uma doença crónica, inflamatória e multifatorial da unidade pilossebácea, sem mortalidade associada, mas frequentemente acompanhada de alta morbilidade física e psicológica. A metformina, um antidiabético oral que diminui a glicemia, está a ser investigada como uma opção terapêutica no tratamento de acne em adultos e adolescentes. Os autores realizaram uma revisão baseada na evidência, de acordo com a metodologia PICO, com o objetivo de avaliar se existe evidência do uso da metformina (monoterapia ou adjuvante) no tratamento de acne em adultos e adolescentes na ausência de Síndrome do Ovário Poliquístico (SOP). No fim da pesquisa, cinco artigos originais foram considerados elegíveis para a revisão. Todos os estudos selecionados mostraram uma melhoria estatisticamente significativa nas lesões de acne nos pacientes que receberam metformina. Apesar do número reduzido de artigos incluídos na revisão, os resultados sugerem que a metformina pode ser utilizada como opção terapêutica na acne, embora seja necessária mais investigação. De acordo com a evidência atual, a metformina pode ser uma opção terapêutica no tratamento da acne sem SOP, com um nível de evidência B na SORT. Este tratamento demonstrou benefícios clínicos, particularmente na acne resistente a outros tratamentos ou em casos mais severos, melhorando o número e a gravidade das lesões.

Metformin is an antihyperglycemic drug under investigation as a therapeutic option for acne in adults and adolescents. The authors performed an evidence-based review, according to the population, intervention, control, and outcomes methodology, to assess whether there is evidence for the use of metformin (monotherapy or adjuvant) in the treatment of acne in adolescents and adults in the absence of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). At the end of the review method, five original studies were eligible for this review. All studies showed a statistically significant improvement in acne lesions in patients receiving metformin. Despite the small number of articles included in this review, results suggest that the use of metformin for the management of acne can be an option, although further investigation is required. According to the current evidence, metformin could be a therapeutic option in the treatment of acne without PCOS, with strength of recommendation taxonomy B level of evidence. This treatment has shown clinical benefits, particularly in acne resistant to other therapies or in more severe acne cases, improving the number and severity of the lesions.

Abstract Introduction: Every year, thousands of students enter higher education, often facing personal and academic challenges. This new phase in their lives involves adapting to increased autonomy, a new routine and a new academic environment, which can result in emotional changes. The feelings experienced in this transition phase can have an impact on their quality of life, their adaptation and their academic success. Objectives: The aim of this study is to identify the emotional states present in the perceptions of first-year undergraduate students, in relation to the period of transition and academic adaptation to higher education. Methodology: This is an exploratory, qualitative study, carried out using a focus group, with content analysis using Nvivo 14 software. The group consisted of nine public higher education students. At the time of data collection, the participants were enrolled in their first year of undergraduate studies in different schools and scientific areas at the same Portuguese institution. Results: The preliminary data shows that the students interviewed tend to characterize their first contact with higher education as a shock. They also described situations of stress, demotivation and doubt associated with not knowing their peers, leaving their parents' home and the new academic reality. On the other hand, emotions of optimism, security and resilience are identified when a favorable relationship is established with teachers and the student is satisfied with the course. Final Considerations: Although negative emotional states were manifested, these tended to dissipate with integration into the institution, support from teachers, the formation of new friendships, and adaptation to new academic demands.

Resumo Introdução: Todos os anos, milhares de estudantes ingressam no ensino superior, deparando-se frequentemente com desafios pessoais e académicos. Esta nova fase das suas vidas implica a adaptação a um aumento de autonomia, a uma nova rotina e a um novo ambiente académico, podendo resultar em alterações emocionais. Os sentimentos vividos nesta fase de transição podem ter um impacto na sua qualidade de vida, na sua adaptação e no seu sucesso académico. Objetivos: O objetivo deste estudo é identificar os estados emocionais presentes nas perceções dos estudantes do primeiro ano de licenciatura, em relação ao período de transição e adaptação académica ao ensino superior. Metodologia: Trata-se de um estudo de carácter exploratório, qualitativo, realizado com recurso a um grupo focal, com análise de conteúdo recorrendo ao software Nvivo 14. O grupo foi constituído por nove estudantes do ensino superior público. Aquando da recolha de dados, os participantes estavam matriculados no 1.º ano em licenciaturas de diferentes escolas e áreas científicas da mesma instituição portuguesa. Resultados: Os dados preliminares mostram que tendencialmente os estudantes entrevistados caracterizam o seu primeiro contacto com o ensino superior, como um choque. São também descritas situações de stress, desmotivação e dúvida associadas ao desconhecimento dos colegas, saída da casa dos pais e à nova realidade académica. Por outro lado, são identificadas emoções de otimismo, segurança e resiliência quando se estabelece uma relação favorável com os docentes e o estudante está satisfeito com o curso. Considerações Finais: Embora tenham sido identificados estados emocionais negativos, estes tendem a dissipar-se com a integração na instituição, o apoio dos professores, a formação de novas amizades e a adaptação às novas exigências académicas.

Abstract Endometriosis is a chronic disease, characterized by the presence of endometrium outside the uterine cavity, which affects around 10% of women of reproductive age. Symptoms vary widely and can be absent or severe, debilitating and highly restrictive of quality of life. Pain, in different forms, intensities and associations, is the most striking symptom. The endometriosis is often associated with infertility and other comorbidities that represent additional risks for patients. Diagnosing is a major challenge. It is often delayed, for reasons rooted in the unspecific nosology of the disease, which is confused with common conditions. Another major challenge is treatment, since it is a chronic, multifaceted disease, sometimes with systemic repercussions, for which it is essential to find a personalized response. This review highlights the most recent aspects of pathogenesis and treatment options, particularly the new pharmacological options with GnRH antagonists, reserving surgery for specific situations. New molecular agents are being developed for the diagnosis and potential treatment of this disease. The configuration of clinical guidelines for optimizing the fertility potential of these patients remains to be defined.

Resumo A endometriose é uma doença crónica, caracterizada pela presença de endométrio fora da cavidade uterina, que afeta cerca de 10% das mulheres em idade reprodutiva. A sua expressão sintomática é muito variada, pode estar ausente ou ser grave, debilitante e altamente condicionante da qualidade de vida. A dor, com matizes e associações diversas, é o sintoma mais marcante. Associa-se com frequência a infertilidade e outras comorbilidades que representam riscos adicionais para as doentes. O diagnóstico da endometriose é um grande desafio. O atraso é frequente, por razões que radicam na nosologia pouco especifica da doença, que se confunde com situações comuns. Outro grande desafio é o tratamento, uma vez que é uma doença crónica, multifacetada, por vezes com repercussão sistémica, para a qual é indispensável encontrar uma resposta personalizada. Esta revisão destaca os aspetos mais recentes da patogénese e opções do tratamento, nomeadamente as novas opções farmacológicas com antagonistas da GnRH, reservando a cirurgia para situações específicas. Estão em desenvolvimento novos agentes moleculares para o diagnóstico e potencial tratamento desta doença. A configuração de orientações clínicas para a otimização do potencial de fertilidade dessas doentes continua por definir.

Resumo Introdução: Com o surgimento da pandemia de COVID-19, foram adotadas várias medidas não farmacológicas para prevenir e controlar a transmissão do SARS-CoV-2. Objetivo: Comparar os internamentos pediátricos por infeção respiratória (IR) antes e depois do aparecimento do SARS-CoV-2. Métodos: Estudo observacional retrospetivo dos internamentos por IR no Serviço de Pediatria de um hospital terciário entre abril de 2018 e março de 2021. Foram incluídos todos os episódios de internamento pediátrico ([0-17[ anos) com um tempo de internamento >24 horas e código de infeção respiratória do ICD-10. Os dados foram extraídos dos registos clínicos eletrónicos. Os primeiros 2 anos foram considerados ‘anos não-COVID-19’ (ano[A]1 e A2), e entre abril de 2020 e março de 2021 foi considerado o ‘ano COVID-19’ (A3). Resultados: Foi registado um total de 783 internamentos durante o período considerado. Houve uma redução significativa na incidência de vírus respiratórios no A3 em comparação com o A1 e A2 (-67% do A2 para A3; p<0,001), com uma redução na proporção de casos de bronquiolite (-42% do A2 para A3; p<0,001) e um aumento na proporção de casos de pneumonia (+124% do A2 para A3; p<0,001). Houve uma redução na incidência de vírus respiratórios do A2 para o A3 (76,6% e 56,4%, respetivamente; p<0,001), principalmente devido ao vírus sincicial respiratório (VSR; 46,8% no A2 e 2,0% no A3; p<0,001). Por outro lado, houve um aumento significativo na incidência de rinovírus do A2 para o A3 (15,3% no A2 e 22,8% no A3; p<0,001) e o SARS-CoV-2 foi identificado em 31,7% dos casos no A3. Foram ainda realizadas mais tomografias computadorizadas de tórax (5,6% vs. 10,9%; p<0,001) e utilizados mais corticoides sistémicos (26,3% vs. 40,6%; p= 0,023) do A2 para o A3. Conclusões: As medidas populacionais não farmacológicas implementadas durante a pandemia de COVID-19 associaram-se a uma redução dos internamentos pediátricos por IR, sobretudo por VSR.

Abstract Introduction: With the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, several non-pharmacological measures were adopted to prevent and control the transmission of SARS-CoV-2. Objective: To compare pediatric hospitalizations for acute respiratory infections (ARIs) before and after the emergence of SARS-CoV-2. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective, observational study of admissions for ARIs in the pediatric ward of a tertiary hospital between April 2018 and March 2021. Inclusion criteria comprised: hospitalization of pediatric patients ([0-17[ years); length of stay >24 hours; and a respiratory infection diagnosis code from ICD-10. Data were collected using electronic clinical records. The first two years were considered ‘non-COVID-19 years’ (year[Y]1 and Y2), while the period between April 2020 and March 2021 was considered the ‘COVID-19 year’ (Y3). Results: A total of 783 hospitalizations were included in the analysis. There was a significant decrease in ARIs admissions in Y3 compared to Y1 and 2 (-67% from Y2 to Y3; p<0.001), with a decrease in the proportion of bronchiolitis cases (-42% from Y2 to Y3; p<0.001) and an increase in pneumonia cases (+124% from Y2 to Y3; p<0.001). There was a significant decrease in the incidence of respiratory viruses from Y2 to Y3 (76.6% vs. 56.4%; p<0.001), mainly driven by a decrease in respiratory syncytial virus (RSV; 46.8% in Y2 vs. 2.0% in Y3; p<0.001). Conversely, there was a significant increase in the incidence of rhinovirus from Y2 to Y3 (15.3% vs. 22.8%; p<0.001), and SARS-CoV-2 was identified in 31.7% of cases in Y3. More chest computed tomography scans were performed (5.6% vs. 10.9%; p<0.001) and more systemic steroids were used (26.3% vs. 40.6%; p=0.023) from Y2 to Y3. Conclusions: Population-based non-pharmacological measures implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic were associated with a reduction in pediatric hospitalizations for ARIs. The decrease in ARIs due to RSV is particularly noteworthy in this pandemic context.

Uma fazendeira grávida de 40 anos, com 30 semanas de gestação, desenvolvimento de febre, mialgia e dor de cabeça, com infecção por OROV confirmada por RT-qPCR. as avaliações maternas e fetais não foram inicialmente concluídas. No entanto, na semana seguinte, um paciente notou diminuição dos movimentos fetais, e o ultrassom confirmou a morte fetal. O diagnóstico molecular detectou o RNA do OROV em vários espécimes fetais. Este caso de transmissão vertical ressalta a necessidade urgente de proteger as mulheres grávidas, incorporar o OROV no diagnóstico diferencial de doenças febris e investigar mais profundamente os potenciais mecanismos patogênicos do vírus.
