Resumo Fundamento A aterosclerose, em alguns casos, é uma condição assintomática, sendo necessário conhecer o grau de comprometimento arterial provocado pelas placas e sua associação com os fatores de risco. O exame de autópsia permite a compreensão dos processos básicos de doenças, assim como a avaliação e fornecimento de dados sobre a característica macroscópica do acometimento aterosclerótico. Objetivo Avaliar macroscopicamente e padronizar o acometimento aterosclerótico das artérias aorta, carótidas e ilíacas e comparar com a idade, o sexo e a causa de morte. Métodos Foram coletados 53 artérias aorta, 53 artérias carótida direita, 53 artérias carótida esquerda, 53 artérias ilíaca direita e 53 artérias ilíaca esquerda. Para essa avaliação, foi considerada a extensão de estrias lipídicas, de placas ateromatosas, de fibrose e de calcificação, as quais serviram de referência para pontuar a intensidade do acometimento aterosclerótico. Foram observados vários graus da aterosclerose e valores acurados para a classificação discreta, moderada e acentuada. Para a análise estatística, os dados foram analisados utilizando-se o software GraphPad Prism ® 7.0. As diferenças foram consideradas estatisticamente significativas quando “p” foi menor que 5% (p<0,05). Resultados As artérias carótidas apresentaram maior acometimento aterosclerótico em comparação às outras artérias avaliadas (K=15,73, p=0,0004). A ocorrência da aterosclerose se mostrou progressiva e significativa com o decorrer da idade (carótidas: t=6,321; p<0,0001; aortas: U=83,5; p<0,0001; ilíacas: U=306; p<0,0001) e na causa de morte cardiovascular (carótidas: t=5,047; p<0,0001; aortas: U=98,5; p=0,0068; ilíacas: U=467,5; p=0,0012). Conclusão A avaliação macroscópica da aterosclerose trata-se de uma forma inovadora e de baixo custo de avaliação através da visualização direta das placas ateroscleróticas, possibilitando uma associação com fatores de risco como idade avançada e doenças cardiovasculares, fornecendo dados importantes para a prática clínica.

Abstract Background Atherosclerosis, in some cases, is an asymptomatic condition, and it is important to know the degree of arterial impairment caused by plaques and its association with risk factors. Autopsy examination provides understanding of basic disease processes and assessment to data about macroscopic characteristic of atherosclerotic involvement. Objective To macroscopically assess and standardize atherosclerotic involvement of aorta, carotid and iliac arteries and compare with age, gender and causes of death. Methods We collected 53 aortic arteries, 53 right carotid arteries, 53 left carotid arteries, 53 right iliac arteries and 53 left iliac arteries. For this assessment, the extension of fatty streaks, atheromatous plaques, fibrosis and calcification were considered, being the reference to score the degree of atherosclerotic involvement. Many degrees of atherosclerosis and accurate values were observed for mild, moderate and severe classification. For statistical analysis, data were analyzed using the software GraphPad Prism® 7.0. Differences were considered statistically significant if p-value was less than 5% (p <0.05). Results Carotid arteries had greater atherosclerotic involvement compared to the other arteries (K = 15.73, p = 0.0004). Atherosclerosis was progressive and significant with increasing age (carotid arteries: t = 6.321; p <0.0001; aorta: U = 83.5; p <0.0001; iliac: U = 306; p <0.0001) and as cause of cardiovascular death (carotids: t = 5.047; p <0.0001; aorta: U = 98.5; p = 0.0068; iliac: U = 467.5; p = 0.0012). Conclusion Macroscopic assessment of atherosclerosis is an innovative and low-cost way of direct visualization of atherosclerotic plaques, enabling an association with risk factors such as increasing age and cardiovascular diseases, providing important data for clinical practice.

Abstract Background: The evaluation of palatal rugae in human identification is important because these structures can remain intact for up to seven days after death. Aim: To compare the area and density of the palatal rugae between ages groups and genders. Settings and Design: A cross-sectional study. Methods and Material: Dental plaster models obtained from patients at the Orthodontic Clinic of University of Uberaba were selected. Two hundred patients were divided into four groups: Group 1:10-15 years; Group 2:16-30 years; Group 3:31-50 years; and Group 4:51-70 years. The palatal rugae and hard palate of each plaster model were outlined and photographed. The evaluation of the area of the hard palate and palatal rugae was performed using the ImageJ software. Statistical analysis used: Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Kruskal-Wallis, Chi-square and Spearman correlation tests using GraphPad Prism 5 statistical software. Results and conclusión: The areas of the palatal rugae and of the hard palate were significantly smaller in the group 4. There was a significant negative correlation between age and palatal rugae area, and between age and hard palatal area. The present study was the first to demonstrate that patients between 51 and 70 years have a smaller palatal rugae area and a smaller hard palate area when compared to other groups. Thus, the evaluation of the hard palate area and of palatal rugae could be used as an adjunct with other methods to determine the age group of an individual; however studies using larger sample size are needed to validate this observation.

RESUMO INTRODUÇÃO E OBJETIVO A aterosclerose cerebral é a principal causa de lesões que contribuem para o comprometimento cognitivo vascular (CCV) e demência vascular, seguida da arteriosclerose de pequenos vasos e da angiopatia amiloide cerebral. Sendo assim, este estudo comparou as alterações radiológicas post mortem de adultos autopsiados com as alterações macroscópicas na região posterior desses encéfalos a fim de estabelecer uma relação entre as duas formas de análise e discutir sobre a relevância da prevenção do CCV em pacientes com aterosclerose encefálica. MATERIAL E MÉTODOS Treze encéfalos foram analisados macroscopicamente para avaliar o grau de aterosclerose das artérias basilar e cerebral posterior. Os pacientes foram autopsiados na disciplina de Patologia Geral no HC-UFTM em Uberaba, Minas Gerais, Brasil. A análise qualitativa da aterosclerose foi realizada com as classificações discreta, moderada ou acentuada. A espessura dos giros e a largura dos sulcos na região posterior dos encéfalos foram analisadas macroscopicamente e por tomografia computadorizada. RESULTADOS E CONCLUSÃO Houve diminuição na largura do sulco calcarino e aumento na espessura do giro occipital temporal medial de acordo com o aumento do grau de aterosclerose macroscopicamente e por tomografia, respectivamente. A baixa oxigenação causada pela aterosclerose provoca a inflamação do parênquima encefálico, provavelmente levando à hipertrofia das células da micróglia e ao consequente aumento dos giros e estreitamento dos sulcos, como observado no presente estudo.

SUMMARY BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Cerebral atherosclerosis is the main cause of lesions that contribute to vascular cognitive impairment and vascular dementia, followed by arteriosclerosis of small vessels and cerebral amyloid angiopathy. The purpose of this study was to compare the post-mortem radiological alterations of autopsied adults with the macroscopic alterations in the posterior region of these brains in order to establish a relationship between the two forms of analysis and to discuss the relevance of the prevention of vascular cognitive impairment in patients with encephalic atherosclerosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirteen brains were analysed macroscopically to assess the degree of atherosclerosis of the basilar and the posterior cerebral arteries. The patients were autopsied in the Subject of General Pathology at General Hospital of Triângulo Mineiro Federal University in Uberaba, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The qualitative analysis of atherosclerosis was performed with classification into mild, moderate or severe. In the posterior region of the brains, width of sulcus and thickness of gyrus were measured by macroscopic analysis and by tomographic analysis. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS There was a decrease in calcarine sulcus width and an increase in medial temporal occipital gyrus thickness in patients with a higher degree of atherosclerosis, macroscopically and in tomography, respectively. Low oxygenation caused by atherosclerosis probably leads to an encephalic parenchyma inflammation that causes microglial cells hypertrophy provoking increase in the gyrus thickness and decrease in the sulcus width, as observed in the present study.

Resumo Objetivos: comparar a porcentagem de fibras colágenas no corpo e colo uterino de mulheres autopsiadas com e sem a Síndrome da Imunodeficiência Adquirida (Aids). Métodos: foram selecionados 30 prontuários de mulheres autopsiadas no período de 1988 a 2013. Foram coletados 30 fragmentos do corpo uterino e 30 do colo uterino, dividido em dois grupos, 15 com Aids e 15 sem. A quantificação das fibras colágenas do corpo e colo uterino foi feita nas lâminas coradas por picrosirius, utilizando-se o sistema KS-300®. Resultados: a porcentagem de fibras colágenas foi menor no colo (U=336544; p=0,001) e maior no corpo uterino (U=308 726,5; p=0,004) no grupo com a retrovirose quando comparado ao grupo sem a doença. A porcentagem no grupo com Aids foi maior no colo uterino do que no corpo (t=0,4793; p=0,0031). Sendo o mesmo resultado encontrado para o grupo sem Aids (t=2.397; p=0,0637). Conclusões: um aumento da porcentagem de fibras colágenas no corpo uterino das mulheres com Aids indica uma resposta imune frente a infecção viral e revela uma falha em manter a infecção restrita ao colo. A interpretação dos parâmetros histoquímicos e morfométricos podem ser úteis no diagnóstico das condições associadas à infecção pelo HIV, contribuindo para a melhora clínica e expectativa de vida.

Abstract Objectives: to compare the percentage of collagen fibers in the autopsied women’s uterine body and cervix with and without the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (Aids). Methods: 30 autopsied women’s medical files were selected from 1988 to 2013. 30 fragments of the uterine body and 30 cervix were collected and then divided into two groups, 15 with Aids and 15 without, The quantification of the collagen fibers of the uterine body and cervix was performed on slides stained with picrosirius, using the KS-300® system. Results: the percentage of collagen fibers was lower for cervix (U=336544; p=0.001) and higher for the uterine body (U=308726,5; p=0.004) in the retroviral group when compared to the group without the disease. The percentage was higher for cervix than the uterine body in the group with Aids (t=0,4793; p=0.0031). the same result was found in the group without Aids (t=2,397; p=0.0637). Conclusions: the increase in the percentage of collagen fibers in the uterine body of women with Aids’ indicates an immune response for viral infection and reveals a failure in keeping the infection restricted to the cervix. The interpretation of the histochemical and morphometric parameters can be useful in the diagnosis associated to HIV infection, contributing for clinical improvement and life expectancy.

Resumo Introdução: O alcoolismo é um grande problema de saúde pública, de elevado custo social e que afeta vários aspectos da atividade humana. Hepatopatia é uma das primeiras consequências do abuso de álcool, podendo ocorrer esteatose, cirrose hepática e hepatite. Outros órgãos, porém, também são afetados, ocorrendo alterações patológicas, como pancreatite, cardiomiopatias, dislipidemias e aterosclerose. Objetivo: Identificar a ocorrência e a intensidade de aterosclerose em alcoolistas com cirrose hepática, observando alterações macro e microscópicas do depósito lipídico e de fibras colágenas e fígado. Verificar a associação de depósito lipídico e de fibras colágenas com gênero, idade e índice de massa corporal (IMC). Relacionar alcoolismo, cirrose hepática e aterosclerose. Método: Foi realizado estudo com base em laudos de autópsias de pacientes com cirrose hepática alcoólica, sendo estudados aortas e fígados para verificar a ocorrência e a intensidade de aterosclerose, bem como a quantidade de colágeno encontrada. Resultados: A aterosclerose microscópica foi maior em jovens (lesão inicial) e em pacientes com cirrose hepática alcoólica. A análise macroscópica da aterosclerose nas aortas mostrou que pacientes com faixas etárias mais avançadas apresentaram classificações mais intensas. A aterosclerose, tanto micro quanto macroscopicamente, e a porcentagem de fibrose no fígado e na aorta foram mais expressivas no gênero feminino. Conclusão: Os pacientes cirróticos apresentaram maior porcentagem de fibrose e lipidose, e podem representar um grupo susceptível à acelerada progressão de doenças cardiovasculares. Estudos investigativos contribuem para o direcionamento das intervenções promotoras da saúde, reduzindo a mortalidade e os custos no tratamento das doenças cardiovasculares.

Summary Introduction: Alcoholism is a major public health problem, which has a high social cost and affects many aspects of human activity. Liver disease is one of the first consequences of alcohol abuse, and steatosis, liver cirrhosis and hepatitis may occur. Other organs are also affected with pathological changes, such as pancreatitis, cardiomyopathies, dyslipidemias and atherosclerosis. Objective: To identify the occurrence and degree of atherosclerosis in alcohol-dependent individuals with liver cirrhosis, observing macroscopic and microscopic changes in lipid and collagen deposits and in the liver. We also aimed to verify the association of lipid and collagen fiber deposits with gender, age and body mass index, and to relate alcoholism, liver cirrhosis and atherosclerosis. Method: We performed a study based on autopsy reports of patients with alcoholic liver cirrhosis, with analysis of aorta and liver fragments to verify the occurrence and degree of atherosclerosis, as well as collagen contents. Results: Microscopic atherosclerosis was higher in young subjects (early injury) and in patients with alcoholic liver cirrhosis. The macroscopic analysis of atherosclerosis in aortas showed that patients in more advanced age groups presented more severe classifications. Atherosclerosis, both micro and macroscopically, and the percentage of fibrosis in the liver and aorta were more expressive in females. Conclusion: Cirrhotic patients presented a higher percentage of fibrosis and lipidosis, and may represent a group susceptible to the accelerated progression of cardiovascular diseases. Investigative studies contribute to targeting health-promoting interventions, reducing the mortality and costs of treating cardiovascular disease.

Resumo Embora a ruptura do miocárdio ocorra em apenas 2 a 4% dos casos de infarto agudo do miocárdio (IAM), está associada a alta mortalidade, principalmente em decorrência do estado de choque cardiogênico agudo. São apresentados os achados anatomopatológicos de três casos de ruptura do miocárdio de pacientes autopsiados nos últimos 30 anos, com diagnóstico de ruptura cardíaca em decorrência de IAM. Nesse período, a porcentagem de IAM com ruptura do miocárdio foi de 0,2%. Os fatores de risco para ruptura do miocárdio pós-IAM incluem idade avançada, arteriosclerose, diabetes mellitus e hipertensão arterial sistêmica.

Summary Although myocardial rupture occurs in only 2% to 4% of cases of acute myocardial infarction (AMI), there is a high mortality rate due to acute cardiogenic shock. We present the anatomopathological findings of three cases of myocardial rupture in autopsied hearts in the last 30 years, with a diagnosis of cardiac rupture in acute myocardial infarction. In these 30 years the percentage of AMI with myocardial rupture was 0.2%. Risk factors for post-AMI myocardial rupture include older age, atherosclerosis, diabetes mellitus and systemic arterial hypertension.

Resumo Introdução: Indivíduos com síndrome de Down (SD) apresentam alterações que afetam o sistema musculoesquelético, provocando padrões anormais e alterando os eixos anatômicos morfológicos e mecânicos que proporcionam uma estabilidade intrínseca ao esqueleto, podendo desencadear desalinhamentos e alterações ortopédicas na vida adulta. Objetivo: O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar a o alinhamento postural antes e após o tratamento equoterapêutico em indivíduos com SD. Métodos: Foram avaliados cinco indivíduos com SD por meio do aplicativo SAPO de avaliação postural, antes e após vinte e sete sessões. Realizou-se a análise qualitativa descritiva por meio do Cluster e análise estatística utilizando o programa Sigma Stat 2.0, considerando estatisticamente significativas as diferenças em que o valor p foi menor que 5%. Resultados: Foi possível verificar melhoras no alinhamento de ombro, de cabeça, de quadril e membros inferiores, bem como diminuição da cifose e da protrusão de cabeça. Conclusão: Os indivíduos com SD apresentaram mudanças satisfatórias no comportamento motor que refletiram em uma melhora da postura estática após o tratamento na equoterapia.

Abstract Introduction: Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) have alterations that affect the musculoskeletal system, causing abnormal patterns, and alter the morphological anatomical and mechanical axes that provide intrinsic stability to the skeleton, and can trigger misalignments and orthopedic disorders in adulthood. Objective: The objective of student to evaluate posture and postural alignment before and after the hippotherapyin individuals with DS. Methods: Posture of five individuals with DS was evaluated by the software SAPO before and after 27 sessions the hippotherapy. Data were subjected to qualitative descriptive analysis using cluster and statistical analysis with the aid of the software Sigma Stat 2.0, considering differences as statistically significant at p-value < 5%. Results: Improvements were achieved for the alignment of shoulder, head, hip, and lower limbs, in addition to decrease in kyphosis and head protrusion. Conclusion: Patients with DS demonstrated satisfactory changes in motor behavior reflected in improved static posture after treatment with hippotherapy.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the morphological features of atherosclerosis in the aortas of autopsied patients (ranging from young adults to the elderly), thus providing new tools for a more sensitive morphological evaluation. METHOD: We collected 141 aorta samples. We assessed the macroscopic degree of atherosclerosis, thickness of the intima and media, lipid and collagen depositions in the intima, and the infiltration of mast cells into the layers of the aorta. We correlated the findings with gender, age, race and cause of death. RESULTS: The degree of atherosclerosis was significantly higher in the elderly. The aorta was thicker in the elderly and in cases with a cardiovascular cause of death. The thickness of the intima was significantly greater in the elderly, in males and in cases with a cardiovascular cause of death. The lipid content in the intima of the aorta was significantly higher in Caucasians. Older people and men had a significantly higher number of mast cells. CONCLUSION: A macroscopic evaluation is a good indicator of the severity of atherosclerosis, but a more detailed analysis, namely evaluating the thickness of the layers of the aorta and the number of mast cells, may further elucidate the changes in the constituents of this vessel.

OBJETIVOS: descrever possíveis alterações anatomopatológicas placentárias associadas à hipóxia fetal, avaliada pelo índice de Apgar. MÉTODOS: foram estudadas 167 placentas de partos realizados no Hospital Escola da Universidade Federal do Triângulo Mineiro, em Uberaba, através da análise macroscópica e microscópica, e de informações clínicas obtidas de prontuários. O índice de Apgar menor que sete foi o parâmetro utilizado para se diagnosticar hipóxia fetal. RESULTADOS: foram encontradas alterações placentárias compatíveis com hipertensão e infiltrado inflamatório. As placentas com alterações compatíveis com baixo fluxo sanguíneo cursaram mais freqüentemente com fetos com índice de Apgar <7 no 5º minuto (p=0,017). CONCLUSÕES: pode existir uma relação entre alterações placentárias e hipóxia fetal evidenciada pelo índice de Apgar. Portanto, o exame anatomopatólogico da placenta poderia ser utilizado para esclarecer causas de hipóxia perinatal não evidenciadas na clínica.

OBJECTIVES: to describe possible placental anatomopathological alterations associated to fetal hypoxia as evaluated by the Apgar score. METHODS: one hundred sixty seven placentas of children delivered at the Hospital Escola da Universidade Federal do Triângulo Mineiro, Uberaba city were analyzed both macro and microscopically; their clinical records were reviewed as well. Apgar Scores below 7 were considered consistent with fetal hypoxia. RESULTS: placental alterations compatible with inflammatory infiltrate and arterial hypertension were found. The latter was more often diagnosed in fetuses with 5 minutes Apgar scores below 7 (p=0.017). CONCLUSIONS: there may be a relationship between placental alterations and fetal hypoxia as diagnosed by the Apgar score. Therefore, the exam of the placenta by the pathologist could be a mean to elucidate a plausible cause of clinically undetected perinatal hypoxia.

OBJETIVO: a vilosite placentária tem sido associada a infecção perinatal, embora uma porcentagem permaneça de etiologia desconhecida. O objetivo deste estudo foi realizar análise morfológica das vilosites, com caracterização imuno-histoquímica, e relacioná-la com intercorrências maternas e fetais. MÉTODOS: foram incluídas 128 placentas. Foi realizada a análise macroscópica e todos os fragmentos coletados foram analisados microscopicamente pelo método da hematoxilina-eosina. As vilosites foram classificadas de acordo com a intensidade do processo inflamatório em vilosite discreta, moderada e acentuada. Para a pesquisa do agente etiológico foi realizada imuno-histoquímica utilizando anticorpos monoclonais anti-Toxoplasma gondii e anti-Cytomegalovirus. Para avaliação do fenótipo das células do infiltrado inflamatório das vilosidades foram utilizados os seguintes anticorpos: anti-CD68, anti-CD57, CD3 e CD20. Foram analisadas as seguintes variáveis: idade materna e gestacional, peso fetal e placentário e intercorrências maternas e fetais. Na comparação entre dois grupos utilizamos o teste de Mann-Whitney e as proporções foram comparadas por meio do teste do chi2. As diferenças observadas foram consideradas significativas quando p<0,05 (5%). RESULTADOS: a vilosite foi identificada em 11,7% das placentas. Em 40% dos casos de vilosite as crianças foram natimortas (p=0,003). Foi encontrado um caso de toxoplasmose congênita e os demais foram classificados como vilosite de etiologia desconhecida. CONCLUSÕES: a intensidade do processo inflamatório placentário apresentou relação com a gravidade do acometimento fetal. As células inflamatórias que compõem a vilosite são macrófagos em sua maioria. Entretanto, não foi possível identificar os agentes etiológicos responsáveis pela processo inflamatório.

PURPOSE: placental villitis has been correlated with perinatal infection, although a percentage of cases remains etiologically unknown. The present study was aimed at the systematic morphological study of placentas for imunohistochemical characterization of villitis and assessment of its possible correlation with maternal and fetal outcome. METHODS: a hundred and twenty-eight placentas were studied. Gross examination was performed and all collected fragments were analyzed microscopically by the hematoxylin-eosin method. Villits was classified according to the inflammatory degree in to mild, moderate and severe. The immunohistochemical study to identify infectious agents was performed using monoclonal antibodies against Toxoplasma gondii and Cytomegalovirus. For inflammatory cell phenotype identification monoclonal antibodies against CD68, CD57, CD3, and CD20 were used. Statistical analysis was performed with the variables: maternal age and fetal gestational age, fetal and placental weight, and fetal and maternal outcomes. To compare the two groups we used the Mann-Whitney test and for proportions we used the chi2 test. The differences in the mean values between the treatment groups were considered statistically significant when p<0.05 (5%). RESULTS: villitis was identified in 11.7% of the cases. In 40% of the cases the children were stillborn (p=0.003). One case showed positive staining for toxoplasmosis while the remaining cases were negative. Imunohistochemical staining showed CD68+ cells, PanT+ cells and negative CD57 and PanB cells. CONCLUSION: we concluded that the intensity of the inflammatory process in the placenta was correlated with the severity of the fetal disease. The inflammatory cells in the villitis focus were macrophages; however, we could not identify infectious agents correlated with the villitis.

OBJETIVO: O objetivo deste trabalho foi identificar as possíveis alterações na espessura da membrana basal das cordas vocais e relacionar estas com a causa de morte. MÉTODO: Foram utilizadas laringes coletadas de adultos autopsiados, no período de 1993 até 2001. Realizamos as colorações da Hematoxilina- Eosina e Ácido Periódico de Schiff, onde foi medido o diâmetro da membrana basal. RESULTADOS: Foram analisadas 66 cordas vocais, o espessamento foi identificado em 14 casos (21,2%), sendo encontrado em proporções iguais entre os sexos, sendo freqüente em pacientes da cor branca (12 casos, 85,7%). Foram encontradas alterações respiratórias em 10 (71,4%) dos casos com espessamento. Entre os pacientes intubados, 7 (18,4%) apresentaram espessamento. Entre os fumantes 9 (19,63%) apresentavam espessamento. Não houve influência estatisticamente significativa do espessamento na doença que levou o indivíduo à morte. CONCLUSÃO: Em relação a causa de morte não há diferença estatisticamente significante entre os casos cuja causa de morte foi por doenças respiratórias ou por doenças não respiratórias e o diagnóstico de espessamento da membrana basal das cordas vocais. Sua etiopatogênese necessita de maiores estudos.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify the possible alteration in the thickness of the epithelium basal membrane of the vocal cords and correlate it with the cause of death. METHOD: Larynxes collected from adult autopsies during the period of 1993 to 2001 were utilized. We used the hematoxylin-eosin and periodic acid-Schiff staining methods for the morphological and morphometric analysis. RESULTS: Sixty-six vocal cords were analysed; increased thickness was identified in 14 cases (21.2%), with equal proportions between the genders. Increased vocal-cord thickness was more frequent in patients of the white ethnicity (12 cases, 85.7%). Respiratory alterations were found in 10 (71.4%) of the cases with increased vocal-cord thickness. Of the patients that were maintained with mechanical ventilation before death, 7 (18.4%) had thickening of the basal membrane. Among the smokers, 9 (19.63%) had basal membrane thickening. CONCLUSION: No statistically significant differences were found between the cases in which the cause of death was related to respiratory diseases as compared to non-respiratory diseases and the thickening of the basal membrane of the vocal cords. However, new studies are needed in order to verify the etiopathogenesis of this thickening.

Na síndrome da imunodeficiência adquirida (AIDS) pode-se verificar o acometimento da supra-renal por efeito citopático direto pelo HIV, por infecções oportunistas ou neoplasias. Estes achados poderiam variar de acordo com a procedência do paciente, devido às doenças peculiares à região. Neste trabalho avaliou-se o comprometimento da supra-renal em quatorze pacientes que morreram de AIDS no Hospital Escola, em Uberaba. Treze eram do sexo masculino e treze brancos. A idade foi de 29,9 ± 7,8 anos e o índice de massa corporal foi de 19 ± 4,1kg/m2. Os fragmentos de supra-renal obtidos nas necropsias foram analisados em microscópio de luz. Encontramos inflamação em 100% dos casos, identificando-se o agente etiológico em oito (58,1%) casos. O Citomegalovírus foi identificado em sete casos, o Cryptococcus sp e o Herpes simplex em dois e o Histoplasma sp em um caso, estes achados são semelhantes aos da literatura. Em um caso, encontramos calcificação do parênquima e em outro, flebite da veia central. Em alguns casos que apresentavam lesão não foi possível identificar o agente etiológico, talvez em decorrência do efeito citopático direto pelo HIV ou devido a toxicidade das drogas utilizadas no tratamento da AIDS e das infecções oportunistas.

In the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), the adrenal glands are subject to opportunistic infections, neoplasm or direct cytopathic effect by HIV. It is know that the incidence and type of adrenal involvement vary according to the patient's place of origin. In this paper we evaluate adrenal involvement in fourteen patients that died from AIDS in the University Hospital of Uberaba, Brazil. The group studied was comprised of thirteen males and thirteen whites. The age was 29.9 ± 7.8 years, and the body mass index was 19.0 ± 4.1kg/m2. Adrenal specimens obtained from autopsies were analyzed by light microscopy. Inflammation was found in 100% of the cases and the etiologic agent(s) was (were) identified in eight (58.1%) patients. Citomegalovirus was identified in seven cases, Cryptococcus sp and Herpes simplex in two and Histoplasma sp in one case, these pathologic findings were similar to literature. We also found parenchymal calcification and adrenal central vein phlebitis in one case each. Injury was found in some cases without indentified infections agent. This fact could be due to the direct cytopathic effect by HIV, or due to toxicity of drug therapy used during treatment of AIDS and opportunistic infections.
