Abstract This article aimed to analyze how institutional racism at a Brazilian public university affects the lives of Black students. This mixed study was developed by applying an online self-administered questionnaire to university students who self-declared as Blacks. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, bivariate analysis using chi-square, and multinomial logistic regression. Qualitative data analysis was performed using IRAMUTEQ. Sixty-eight (54.4%) of the 125 respondents claimed to have suffered racism at least once within the university. We noticed that racist situations experienced by Black people within the university environment call into question the student’s self-confidence and motivation, directly affecting their mental health and performance in the course. The importance of receptive groups for strengthening students’ belonging was highlighted.

Abstract Background A cost of illness (COI) study aims to evaluate the socioeconomic burden that an illness imposes on society as a whole. This study aimed to describe the resources used, patterns of care, direct cost, and loss of productivity due to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in Brazil. Methods This 12-month, cross-sectional, COI study of patients with SLE (ACR 1997 Classification Criteria) collected data using patient interviews (questionnaires) and medical records, covering: SLE profile, resources used, morbidities, quality of life (12-Item Short Form Survey, SF-12), and loss of productivity. Patients were excluded if they were retired or on sick leave for another illness. Direct resources included health-related (consultations, tests, medications, hospitalization) or non-health-related (transportation, home adaptation, expenditure on caregivers) hospital resources. Costs were calculated using the unit value of each resource and the quantity consumed. A gamma regression model explored cost predictors for patients with SLE. Results Overall, 300 patients with SLE were included (92.3% female, mean [standard deviation (SD)] disease duration 11.8 [7.9] years), of which 100 patients (33.3%) were on SLE-related sick leave and 46 patients (15.3%) had stopped schooling. Mean (SD) travel time from home to a care facility was 4.4 (12.6) hours. Antimalarials were the most commonly used drugs (222 [74.0%]). A negative correlation was observed between SF-12 physical component and SLE Disease Activity Index (- 0.117, p = 0.042), Systemic Lupus International CollaboratingClinics/AmericanCollegeofRheumatology Damage Index (- 0.115, p = 0.046), medications/day for multiple co-morbidities (- 0.272, p < 0.001), SLE-specific drugs/day (- 0.113, p = 0.051), and lost productivity (- 0.570, p < 0.001). For the mental component, a negative correlation was observed with medications/day for multiple co-morbidities (- 0.272, p < 0.001), SLE-specific medications/day (- 0.113, p = 0.051), and missed appointments (- 0.232, p < 0.001). Mean total SLE cost was US$3,123.53/patient/year (median [interquartile range (IQR)] US$1,618.51 [$678.66, $4,601.29]). Main expenditure was medication, with a median (IQR) cost of US$910.62 ($460, $4,033.51). Mycophenolate increased costs by 3.664 times (p < 0.001), and inflammatory monitoring (erythrocyte sedimentation rate or C-reactive protein) reduced expenditure by 0.381 times (p < 0.001). Conclusion These results allowed access to care patterns, the median cost for patients with SLE in Brazil, and the differences across regions driven by biological, social, and behavioral factors. The cost of SLE provides an updated setting to support the decision-making process across the country. ABSTRACT: Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy is a promising tool for optimizing seed analyses quickly and assertively. The aim of this study was to investigate the viability of NIR in association with chemometric methods in classification of soybean seed lots regarding their physiological potential. We evaluated 372 soybean seed lots for vigor and obtained NIR spectra from seed samples. The original spectra were pre-processed by the following methods: Standard Normal Variate (SNV), SNV + 1st and 2nd derivatives, Gap-segment derivative, and Savitzky-Golay for the first- and second-degree derivatives, as well as combinations of the methods. The lots were divided into Class I (≥ 85% germination after accelerated aging) and Class II (< 85% germination after accelerated aging); and the pre-processed spectra were used to build classification models through the following methods: K-nearest neighbors (KNN), Partial Least Squares - Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA), Naive Bayes (NB), Random Forest (RF), and Support Vector Machine (SVM). The PLS-DA model showed greater classification accuracy and kappa, followed by SVM. The lowest accuracy values were obtained for the NB and RF models. The regions between the wavelengths 1,000-1,200 nm and 2,200-2,500 nm were the most important for distinguishing the quality levels of soybean seeds. Abstract This article presents the development of EducaIndex as an innovative and dialogical methodological proposal, which allows the evaluation of communication campaigns on HIV/AIDS and viral hepatitis by young people aged 15 to 24, linked to schools, civil society, scholars, professionals and/or managers, enabling mediation between health education, information, and communication. Data was collected in Brasília-DF and Catalão-GO in the Central-West region; Manaus-AM in the North region; Vitória-ES in the Southeast region; Porto Alegre, Santa Cruz do Sul and Fontoura Xavier-RS in the South region; and Fortaleza-CE in the Northeast region, with young people aged 15 to 24, linked to schools, civil society, scholars, professionals and/or managers. The locations were selected for convenience, considering the displacement of the team of researchers and supporters who are part of the Brazilian Network for Information Management and Knowledge Translation in Health. The research interviewed 643 young people who evaluated three campaigns, including a poster, a jingle, and a video, selected from 475 analyzed campaigns. The quantitative methodology meets the EducaIndex, and the qualitative methodology meets the workshops that mediate the application of the instrument in the field. The EducaIndex instrument was reliable (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.700), attesting the ability to reproduce results in time and space consistently. As for the workshops, they allowed interaction between researchers and participants, strengthening the importance of protagonism in the campaign evaluation process.

Abstract Cardiomyopathy is characterized by structural and functional abnormalities in the heart muscle that are not influenced by coronary disease, hypertension, valve disease, or congenital heart defects. Genetic testing, which helps diagnose the molecular bases of cardiomyopathy, can affect prognostication and clinical decisions. Recent guidelines advocate classifying cardiomyopathies based on phenotypic categories, which encompass a range of clinical presentations, underlying causes, and outcomes. Beyond deepening our grasp of the disease, genetic testing can distinguish between diseases with similar presentations, known as genocopies, which can profoundly influence treatment decisions. Genetic testing is also essential for reproductive counseling and risk evaluation among family members. Combined with advanced imaging techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging, genetic investigation offers a comprehensive understanding of the disease. Thus, as the nature of cardiomyopathies continues to be unraveled, cardiologists must stay updated on advances in genetic testing and their practical applications. disease hypertension defects cardiomyopathy decisions categories presentations causes outcomes genocopies members Thus unraveled applications

Abstract Background There is a remarkable variability in the frequency of HLA-B27 positivity in patients with spondyloarthritis (SpA), which may be associated with different clinical presentations worldwide. However, there is a lack of data considering ethnicity and sex on the evaluation of the main clinical and prognostic outcomes in mixed-race populations. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of HLA-B27 and its correlation with disease parameters in a large population of patients from the Brazilian Registry of Spondyloarthritis (RBE). Methods The RBE is a multicenter, observational, prospective cohort that enrolled patients with SpA from 46 centers representing all five geographic regions of Brazil. The inclusion criteria were as follow: (1) diagnosis of axSpA by an expert rheumatologist; (2) age ≥18 years; (3) classification according to ASAS axial. The following data were collected via a standardized protocol: demographic data, disease parameters and treatment historical. Results A total of 1096 patients were included, with 73.4% HLA-B27 positivity and a mean age of 44.4 (±13.2) years. Positive HLA-B27 was significantly associated with male sex, earlier age at disease onset and diagnosis, uveitis, and family history of SpA. Conversely, negative HLA-B27 was associated with psoriasis, higher peripheral involvement and disease activity, worse quality of life and mobility. Conclusions Our data showed that HLA-B27 positivity was associated with a classic axSpA pattern quite similar to that of Caucasian axSpA patients around the world. Furthermore, its absence was associated with peripheral manifestations and worse outcomes, suggesting a relevant phenotypic difference in a highly miscegenated population.
ABSTRACT The utilization of organic fertilizer for a short cycle crop may allow planting, in sequence, another short cycle crop, without the need for new fertilizers, reducing the costs of a new fertilization. The objective of this study was to evaluate the residual effect of fertilization applied to broccoli with phosphorus sources in the presence and absence of organic compost, on beet and chicory production in subsequent cultivation. In broccoli cultivation, four sources of phosphorus (thermophosphate, natural phosphate, natural reactive phosphate, and triple superphosphate) (600 kg/ha of P2O5) were evaluated in the presence and absence of organic compost (Visafértil®, 55 t/ha) before planting. After the removal of the cultural remains of broccoli, beet and chicory, seedlings were transplanted in the same plots of the first crop treatments. For each species eight treatments were evaluated, in a 4 x 2 factorial scheme. The first factor were the four sources of phosphorus and the second one was the application or not of organic compost before broccoli (hybrid BRO 68) planting. Treatments with organic compost showed greater production of beet and chicory, compared to the absence of compost. Fertilization with organic compost associated to the phosphorus sources provides necessary residual effect to beet and chicory production. The best P source for beet was triple superphosphate, and for chicory, in the absence of organic compost, triple superphosphate was the best source. In the presence of organic compost, the best sources were triple superphosphate and natural phosphate. planting sequence fertilizers cultivation thermophosphate, thermophosphate (thermophosphate phosphate 600 (60 kgha kg ha P2O5 PO O Visafértil®, Visafértil (Visafértil® 5 t/ha tha t scheme hybrid 68 60 (6 P2O Visafértil® (Visafértil 6 (

ABSTRACT: Sinonasal neoplasms represent approximately 1% of all neoplasms and represent a major challenge for treatment. The treatment of nasal tumors must be local, and radiotherapy can be a good option in these cases. This study evaluated the therapeutic response of canine sinonasal neoplasms to megavoltage radiotherapy, and consequently, its influence on the survival and quality of life of these animals. We included 26 dogs with sinonasal neoplasms through histopathological and cytological examination. Dogs were treated with radiotherapy at total doses of 42-54 Gy (for carcinomas) and 45 Gy (for sarcomas) in 15-18 fractions of 2.8-3.0 Gy. Tumor staging was performed based on skull tomography. The most frequent clinical signs of sinonasal neoplasms were sneezing, nasal noise, and epistaxis. Acute side effects were mild and more frequent. Survival was evaluated based on tumor stage, obtaining a mean overall survival of 329 days (95% confidence interval, 229-428) and a median of 252.5 days. The survival time in animals in stage T3/T4 was significantly shorter than that in those in stage T1/T2 (P < 0.05). Moreover, 86.4% of the treated animals showed clinical improvement. Radiotherapy was well tolerated by dogs and effective in controlling sinonasal neoplasms. ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others. publications problem uptodate up date classifications context exception (CTFB http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/, httpfaunajbrjgovbr http //fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ , jbrj gov br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/) 2015 Brazil 80 specialists 1 2024 133691 133 691 133,69 125138 125 138 125,13 82.3%, 823 82 3 (82.3% 102000 102 000 102,00 7.69%, 769 7 69 (7.69% 11000 11 11,00 . 3,567 3567 567 (3,56 2,292 2292 2 292 (2,29 1,833 1833 833 (1,83 1,447 1447 447 (1,44 1000 1,00 831 (83 628 (62 606 (60 520 (52 50 users science health biology law anthropology education others http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ faunajbrjgovbr //fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ 201 8 202 13369 13 133,6 12513 12 125,1 82.3% (82.3 10200 10 00 102,0 7.69% 76 6 (7.69 1100 11,0 3,56 356 56 (3,5 2,29 229 29 (2,2 1,83 183 83 (1,8 1,44 144 44 (1,4 100 1,0 (8 62 (6 60 52 (5 5 http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br 20 1336 133, 1251 125, 82.3 (82. 1020 0 102, 7.69 (7.6 110 11, 3,5 35 (3, 2,2 22 (2, 1,8 18 (1, 1,4 14 4 ( 82. ABSTRACT Introduction: The traditional teaching model, in which the teacher is the mentor of the educational process and focuses on extensive lectures, is still quite prevalent in educational institutions at different levels of education. This scenario can be considered incongruent with the new technological era and new way of thinking. In contrast, gamification is an active methodology that aims to make the student the center of learning, aiming to increase their interest and improve content absorption. Objective: This study aims to analyze the perception of students attending the second semester of a medical course about the use of a game that covers the main concepts of renal physiology. Method: This is a descriptive, prospective study. The activity consisted of a dynamic that used a board game with cards about renal physiology for 104 students. Subsequently, a questionnaire with 11 questions was applied, mostly objective, whose main variables investigated were previous experience with gamification, the adequacy of the practical class duration, how they evaluated the use of gamification in the practical class, among others. Results: The results showed that most students stated that this type of methodology is stimulating (93.3%) and that it helps in the study of the proposed subjects (94.2%), consolidating the topics previously covered in the classroom using the traditional method. The students also pointed out that the best way to assimilate the content would be to add gamification, after the traditional method of dialogue exposition (61.5%). When asked about their perception of the use of gamification in practical classes, most students classified it as excellent (65.4%) or good (30.8%). Conclusion: Given the results presented herein, it can be concluded that gamification proved to be an excellent ally to the traditional theoretical class, serving as a mechanism for sedimentation and increased interest for students.
ABSTRACT This paper results from a participatory research with children in public spaces. The research, guided by a framework based on the Sociology of Childhood and the Urban Studies, offers an interdisciplinary dialogue that considers childhood as a generational category of its own worth, constituted by children as social actors with the ‘right to a voice’, recognizing that they have particular modes of communication, relationship and cultures (Dornelles; Fernandes, 2015; Sarmento, 2003; 2008). From the Sociology of Childhood’s perspective, the concept of ‘city’ is widely used when discussing children’s participation, even if such actions do not always take place in the context of the city. It is the case of the space where our research took place, as it seemed to us that the word “city” did not took into consideration the characteristics of the space under analysis. There are several authors in the field of Urbanism who have been questioning the concept of ‘city’, proposing some reflections about it and bringing to the discussion alternative definitions. Likewise, we advocate the importance of using the concept of ‘territory’ instead of ‘city’, in order to be more accurate and to safeguard the participation of all children, regardless of the context in which they live, helping to overcome their geographical/social invisibility. spaces Studies worth right voice, voice , voice’ communication Dornelles (Dornelles Fernandes 2015 Sarmento 2003 2008. 2008 . 2008) Childhoods s perspective ‘city city childrens “city analysis ‘city, definitions Likewise ‘territory territory live geographicalsocial geographical invisibility 201 200 20 2

ABSTRACT Paracoccidioidomycosis, the most important systemic mycosis in Latin America, is closely linked to rural activities. In Brazil, it is an endemic disease, with an estimated 4,000 to 6,000 annual cases, accounting for over 80% of the global diagnoses. We present an intriguing case of this disease with an intestinal manifestation in a 71-year-old woman. The involvement of the cecal appendix led to a complication of cholangitis that mimicked cholangiocarcinoma.
