The pedicled buccal fat pad is a reliable flap for the repair of small oral defects. It is durable, easy to harvest, and should be considered in settings where access to free flaps is limited and in cases where previous flaps have failed. We discuss a case in which this flap was used successfully for closure of an oro-antral fistula. The indications, anatomy and techniques of successful harvest are discussed.

Um dos principais mecanismos de sobrevivência das plantas daninhas em ambientes constantemente perturbados é a alta produção de sementes. Essas possuem geralmente algum mecanismo de dormência, o qual contribui para a perpetuação de espécies interferentes nos cultivos agrícolas. A dormência pode ser caracterizada pela ausência temporária da germinação, mesmo quando em condições adequadas de sua ocorrência. Isso permite que inúmeras espécies vegetais sobrevivam às adversidades, sobretudo aquelas que dificultam ou impeçam o seu crescimento vegetativo e reprodutivo. As causas da dormência são provenientes de dois mecanismos básicos, sendo o primeiro relacionado a eventos internos das sementes (embrião) e o segundo, às características externas (tegumento, endosperma ou as barreiras impostas pelo fruto). Conceitualmente, a dormência pode ser distinguida em dois tipos: dormência primária (quando os mecanismos de dormência ocorrem ainda na planta-mãe) e secundária (quando os mecanismos de estabelecimento da dormência ocorrem após a dispersão das sementes). A ocorrência desses dois tipos de dormência é comum em plantas daninhas. A sua alternância ou ciclagem garante o fluxo de germinação destas espécies, o qual depende das características iniciais durante a formação das sementes (dormência primária) e, posteriormente, das condições ambientais (dormência secundária). Todavia, muitos são os mecanismos que coordenam a dormência, sendo a distinção destes ainda controversos. Nesse sentido, este estudo tem por objetivo abordar alguns dos principais conceitos e mecanismos de dormência em plantas daninhas, com intuito de contribuir e estimular as pesquisas, ainda escassas, nessa área.

The high production of seeds in constantly disturbed environments is one of the main mechanisms of weeds survival. These seeds have usually some dormancy mechanism which constitutes weed species perpetuation in the crops. Seed dormancy can be characterized by temporally absence of the germination capacity, even though the seeds have satisfactorily conditions to germinate, thus allowing species survival under adversities, mainly those that make it difficult or hinder vegetative and reproductive growth. The causes of dormancy stem from two basic mechanisms: the first is related to inner seed events (embryo) and the second to outer characteristics in the seeds (tegument, endosperm or fruit barriers). Conceptually, dormancy can be classified as primary dormancy (when the mechanisms occur in plants-mother) and secondary dormancy (when the mechanisms causing dormancy occur after seed dispersion). These types of dormancy occur normally in weeds. Their alternation or cycling ensures germination flow these species, which depends on the characteristics occurring at the initial stages of seed formation (primary dormancy), and later, on the environmental conditions (secondary dormancy). However, many mechanisms coordinate dormancy, with the differences among them being still controversial. Thus, this study aimed to approach some of the main concepts and mechanisms in weed dormancy, in order to contribute and stimulate research which is still scarce in this area.

Este trabalho teve o objetivo de avaliar a influência da luz e da temperatura na germinação de três espécies de plantas daninhas comuns em lavouras brasileiras. As espécies estudadas foram Alternanthera tenella, conyza bonariensis e Digitaria ciliaris, nas quais se testou a influência de quatro variações de temperatura (15/25, 20/30, 20/35 e 30/40 ºC), com e sem a presença de luz, no percentual de germinação e no índice de velocidade de germinação (IVG). As sementes foram coletadas em canteiros experimentais, sendo elas selecionadas para permitir a homogeneização amostral. Posteriormente, 50 sementes de cada espécie foram colocadas em caixas do tipo gerbox, previamente preparadas com papel duplo umedecido de germinação "germitest". As caixas foram armazenadas em germinadores verticais tipo BOD, com controle de temperatura. As temperaturas foram mantidas na proporção de 16/8 horas diurna e noturna, respectivamente. As avaliações iniciaram-se aos três dias após incubação, sendo consideradas germinadas as sementes com protusão radicular igual ou superior a 1 mm. Constatou-se efeito significativo da luz para a germinação de todas as espécies, principalmente para D. ciliaris. A. tenella apresentou germinação elevada em todas as variações de temperatura testadas, embora 30/40 ºC tenham restringido a germinação de C. bonariensis. Os tratamentos também afetaram o IVG, cujo comportamento foi similar ao percentual de germinação, sendo o maior efeito constatado em D. ciliaris.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of light and temperature on the germination of three common Brazilian weed species: Alternathera tenella, Conyza bonariensis and Digitaria ciliaris. The influence of four temperature variations (15/25, 20/30, 20/35 and 30/40 ºC) with and without light was tested on germination percentage and germination velocity rate (GVR). The seeds were collected in experimental seedbeds to allow sample homogenization. Fifty seeds of each species were placed in gerbox type boxes, previously prepared with humidified "germitest" germination double layer paper. The boxes were stored in temperature-controlled BOD type vertical germinators. The temperatures were maintained at the ratio of 16/8 hours day and night, respectively. Evaluations started three days after incubation, with the seeds displaying roots equal or over 1 mm being considered to have germinated. A significant light effect on germination was confirmed fort all the species, mainly D. ciliaris. A. tenella, presented high germination at all temperatures tested, even though 30/40 ºC restricted C. bonariensis germination. The treatments also affected GVR, whose behavior was similar to the germination percentage, with the highest effect being confirmed in D. ciliaris.

Com o objetivo de combate ao ácaro da falsa ferrugem, Phyllocoptruta oleivova, foi realizado o presente trabalho, com a incorporação de granulados no solo. O pomar experimental era formado de laranjeiras Bahianinha", de 15 a 18 anos de idade. Os granulados foram aplicados no solo, em dois sulcos rasos, paralelos e opostos, sob a saia das plantas. Os granulados e as quantidades dos produtos comerciais, por planta, foram: A) etoprope G 10%, 80 g; B) carbossulfano G 5%, 80 g; C) isazofós G 10%, 70 g; D) carbossulfano G 5%, 50 g; E) fensulfotion G 5%, 400 g; F) fensulfotiom G 5%, 250g; G) testemunha. Foram realizadas, em laboratório, contagens aos 0, 22, 36, 50 e 88 dias. Os resultados foram completamente negativos.

Granular insecticides used in the soil were evaluated for the control of the citrus rust mite, Phyttocoptruta oleivora, on orange trees. The application consisted of two parallel lines in the soil per tree. The treatments and the active ingredients per tree were as follows: A) etoprop, 8 g; B) carbosulfan, 4 g; C) isazophos, 7 g; D) carbosulfan, 2.5; E) fensulfothion, 20 g; F) fensulfothion, 12.5 g; G) check. Counts of the mites were made in laboratory at the day of application and 22, 36, 50, and 88 days after the application (Table 1). None of the granular pesticides gave positive results (Table 2).

A fim de se combater experimentalmente o ácaro da falsa ferrugem usaram-se, no solo, cinco granulados sistêmicos (quatro deles em duas diferentes quantidades por laranjeira). Os melhores resultados foram conseguidos pelo aldicarbe à razão de 40g e 20g do granulado por laranjeira e pelo oxamil na quantidade de 80g. O fenamifós, carbofurano, isazofos, o oxamil (50 g por planta) não conduziram a resultados positivos, segundo as condições do trabalho experimental.

This paper deals with chemical control of Phyllocoiptruta oleivora on mature orange trees. All pesticides used were granular systemics. The application consisted of two parallel lines into the soil per tree. Treatments and active ingredients per tree were as follows: A) phenamiphos, 4g; B) carbofuran, 5g; C) phenamiphos, 7g; D) oxamyl, 5g; E) aldicarb, 4g; F) carbofuran,2.5g; G) isazophos, 5g; H) aldicarb, 2g; I) oxamyl, 8g; J) check. The most efficient were aldicarb (4g i.a. per tree), aldicarb (2g i.a.), and oxamyl (8g i.a.) (Tables 1 and 2). Counts of the mite numbers were made 1 day before and 8, 33, 45 and 60 days after the application (Table 2).
