Abstract Records of Statherian intracontinental ruptural tectonics, magmatism and sedimentation events are recognized all over the South American Platform as an immediate tectonic response to the formation of a large continental domain during Rhyacian-Orosirian orogenic collage. In this paper, we present a preliminary synthesis of the variety of tectonic-sedimentary and magmatic occurrences of these taphrogenic processes along the Statherian Period, which are recorded in all cratons, as well as in the basement of most Brasiliano orogenic belts. The Statherian rock units are better preserved over the cratons, and within the Brasiliano structural provinces they are reduced by erosional processes and discretely overprinted by Tonian and Cryogenian structures, and strongly by the Ediacaran-Brasiliano Orogeny. Clastic sediments are dominantly mature, primary structures clearly pointing to the environmental setting. Anorogenic bimodal magmatism, represented by volcanic and plutonic rocks is common, where felsic rocks are largely dominant. Their geochemical signature indicates within-plate settings and dike swarms are common within the cratons. The magmatism was very intense locally, suggesting LIP occurrences, although in need of additional geophysical and petrological support. The taphrogenic and magmatic events took place within Orosirian and Rhyacian basement, in which main tectonic-magmatic events ceased just before the Late Statherian, occasionally extending into the Calymmian.

Em 2008 uma série de tremores ocorreu no Granito Meruoca, localizado na porção noroeste da Província Borborema. A atividade sísmica foi identificada ao longo da falha Riacho Fundo com direção 081°Az e profundidade de 8 quilômetros. O objetivo do estudo foi analisar a correlação entre a atividade sísmica e as estruturas encontradas no Granito Meruoca. Foi realizado um mapeamento geológico na área epicentral, com análise da mineralogia das rochas de falha e comparação com os dados sismológicos da falha Riacho Fundo. Chegamos à conclusão que a falha sismogênica coincide com as falhas de direção E-W encontradas em escala de afloramento e com o enxame de diques basálticos mezosóicos. Nós propomos que as estruturas frágeis do granito Meruoca foram reativadas pela sismicidade. Nosso estudo exalta a importância do mapeamento geológico e da análise mineral para estabelecer as relações entre as estruturas geológicas e a sismicidade em uma determinada área.

A sequence of earthquakes occurred in 2008 in the Meruoca granitic pluton, located in the northwestern part of the Borborema Province, NE Brazil. A seismological study defined the seismic activity occurring along the seismically-defined Riacho Fundo fault, a 081° striking, 8 km deep structure. The objective of this study was to analyze the correlation between this seismic activity and geological structures in the Meruoca granite. We carried out geological mapping in the epicentral area, analyzed the mineralogy of fault rocks, and compared the seismically-defined Riacho Fundo fault with geological data. We concluded that the seismically-defined fault coincides with ∼E–W-striking faults observed at outcrop scale and a swarm of Mesozoic basalt dikes. We propose that seismicity reactivated brittle structures in the Meruoca granite. Our study highlights the importance of geological mapping and mineralogical analysis in order to establish the relationships between geological structures and seismicity at a given area.

O alcali-granito de Itapuranga e o quartzo-sienito de Uruana são corpos alongados na direção E-W na porção central da Faixa Brasília. Eles são associados com o lineamento dos Pireneus, que cortam as estruturas regionais NNW da faixa. Dados U-Pb (SHRIMP e convencional) para as intrusões de Itapuranga e Uruana indicaram idades de 624 ± 10 Ma e 618 ± 4 Ma, respectivamente. Núcleos de três cristais de zircão do granito Itapuranga têm idades entre 1.79 e 1.49 Ga. Idades modelo Sm-Nd são de 1.44 Ga e valores de épsilonNd(T) são -5.1 e -5.7, indicando participação de crosta siálica mais antiga (Paleo- a Mesoproterozóica). Feições diagnósticas de mistura de magmas indicam a co-existência de líquidos máficos e félsicos, de forma que os membros-finais félsicos das intrusões possivelmente representam líquidos derivados predominantemente da fusão de crosta continental, formados em resposta à intrusão de magmas máficos de natureza alcalina há ca. 620 Ma. Essas intrusões são contemporâneas, ou umpouco mais jovens, que o pico metamórfico Brasiliano na porção sul da Faixa Brasília. Seu alojamento ao longo do lineamento dos Pireneus sugere tratar-se de corpos sin-tectônicos em relação a essas estruturas, tendo os magmas originais cristalizado em zonas de transtensão ao longo das falhas.

The Itapuranga alkali granite and Uruana quartz syenite are large K-rich EW-elongated intrusions, in the central part of the Neoproterozoic Brasília Belt, central Brazil. They are associated with Pireneus lineaments, which cut the regional NNW-SSE structures of the southern part of the belt. SHRIMP and conventional U-Pb data for the Itapuranga and Uruana intrusions indicate crystallization ages of 624 ± 10 Ma and 618 ± 4 Ma, respectively. Three zircon cores from the Itapuranga granite yielded U-Pb ages between 1.79 and 1.49 Ga. Sm-Nd T DM ages for both intrusions are 1.44 Ga and epsilonNd(T) values are -5.1 and -5.7, suggesting the input of material derived from older (Paleo- to Mesoproterozoic) sialic crust in the origin of the parental magmas. Magma mixing structures indicate co-existence of mafic and felsic end-members. The felsic end-member of the intrusions is dominantly represented by crust-derived melts, formed in response to the invasion of Paleo/Mesoproterozoic sialic crust by alkali-rich mafic magmas at ca. 620 Ma. These intrusions are roughly contemporaneous with, or perhaps slightly younger than, the peak of regional metamorphism in the southern Brasília Belt. Their emplacement along the Pireneus lineament suggest a syn-tectonic origin for them, most probably in transtensional settings along these faults.

Idades isótopicas U-Pb SHRIMP e Sm-Nd foram determinadas em rochas metavulcânicas félsicas da Seqüência de Silvânia e Granito Jurubatuba na porção central da Faixa Brasília. Grãos de zircão da rocha metavulcânica da Seqüência de Silvânia e do granito forneceram, respectivamente, as idades de 2115 ± 23 Ma e 2089 ± 14 Ma, interpretadas como idades de cristalização destas rochas. Amostras da Seqüência de Silvânia resultaram em isócrona Sm-Nd em rocha total, indicando idade de cristalização de 2262 ± 110 Ma e épsilonNd(T) = +3.0 interpretada como representativa de evento magmático juvenil para estas rochas. Análises isótopicas de Nd em amostras do Granito Jurubatuba resultaram em idades modelo T DM entre 2.30 e 2.42 Ga e valores de épsilonNd(T) variando entre -0.22 e -0.58. O valor mais antigo de idade modelo T DM refere-se a xenólito de rocha metassedimentar no granito. As idades de cristalização paleoproterozóicas da Seqüência de Silvânia e do Granito Jurubatuba são a primeira evidência de evento magmático juvenil ocorrido entre 2.14-2.08 Ga no embasamento da porção central da Faixa Brasília.

U-Pb SHRIMP and Sm-Nd isotopic ages were determined for felsic metavolcanic rocks from the Silvânia Sequence and Jurubatuba Granite in the central part of the Brasília Belt. Zircon grains from a metavolcanic sample yielded 2115 ± 23 Ma and from the granite yielded 2089 ± 14 Ma, interpreted as crystallization ages of these rocks. Six metavolcanic samples of the Silvânia Sequence yielded a six-point whole-rock Sm-Nd isochron indicating a crystallization age of 2262 ± 110 Ma and positive epsilonNd(T) = +3.0 interpreted as a juvenile magmatic event. Nd isotopic analyses on samples from the Jurubatuba Granite have Paleoproterozoic T DM model ages between 2.30 and 2.42 Ga and epsilonNd(T) values vary between -0.22 and -0.58. The oldest T DM value refers to a sedimentary xenolith in the granite. These results suggest crystallization ages of Silvânia volcanics and Jurubatuba Granite are the first evidence of a ca. 2.14-2.08 juvenile magmatic event in the basement of the central part of the Brasília Belt that implies the presence of arc/suture hidden in reworked basement of the Brasília Belt.
