Abstract In his Theory of Needs, Maslow argues that in the self- actualization stage the individual would have more developed B- values, which would involve, among other characteristics, the tendency to be mostly dedicated to causes of collective interest to the detriment of individual interests. It would also be in the self- actualization stage that the environment would have an intrinsic value, an important aspect if we consider the need for developing solutions to socio-environmental problems. Would the Social Representation of the environment have a relationship with the different stages of needs proposed by Maslow in his theory? Could the self-actualization stage reveal an individual with a globalizing representation of the environment? To answer these questions, an study was conducted with 134 participants adapting and using the Environmental Motivation Profile Test instrument and the results showed a significant correlation between the stage of self- actualization and a globalizing representation of the Environment. ABSTRACT Diversifying pastures with forage legumes may reduce nitrogen fertilization due to biological N fixation. This study aimed to quantify forage accumulation rate and macronutrients extraction and to identify the best intercropping combination between butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea) – a legume, and three warm-season forage grasses of different growth habits (signalgrass – Urochloa decumbunes, Guinea grass - Mega thyrsus maximus, and bermudagrass Cynodon dactylon). Treatments consisted of mixes of perennial herbaceous legume, butterfly pea (twining stem), with grasses, signalgrass (decumbent stem) and Guinea grass (erect stem), and bermudagrass (stoloniferous/rhizomatous). The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design, with three treatments and three replications. There was interaction between the intercropping combinations and cutting cycles for forage accumulation rate (FAR) and N, P, K, Ca, Mg, and S uptake. Phosphorus and K uptake was reduced from the second cycle onwards, except for the signalgrass-butterfly pea intercropping, whose reduction was only from the third cycle. Conversely, the signalgrass-butterfly pea and bermudagrass-butterfly pea intercropping did not differ from each other in relation to total N concentration in soil, but the signalgrass-butterfly pea intercropping showed total N concentration in soil higher than that of Guinea grass-butterfly pea intercropping. A higher predominance of the N-NH4+ form was observed in the soil. Grass-legume intercropping increased the demand for nutrients, which makes it indispensable to verify the export of macronutrients to know when to supply these nutrients removed from the soil solution. fixation Clitoria ternatea legume warmseason warm season decumbunes maximus dactylon. dactylon . dactylon) twining stem, stem , decumbent erect stoloniferous/rhizomatous. stoloniferousrhizomatous stoloniferous/rhizomatous stoloniferous rhizomatous (stoloniferous/rhizomatous) design replications FAR (FAR P Ca Mg onwards signalgrassbutterfly Conversely bermudagrassbutterfly grassbutterfly NNH4+ NNH4 NNH NH4+ NH4 NH N-NH4 Grasslegume Grass solution (stoloniferous/rhizomatous N-NH

ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others. publications problem uptodate up date classifications context exception (CTFB http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/, httpfaunajbrjgovbr http //fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ , jbrj gov br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/) 2015 Brazil 80 specialists 1 2024 133691 133 691 133,69 125138 125 138 125,13 82.3%, 823 82 3 (82.3% 102000 102 000 102,00 7.69%, 769 7 69 (7.69% 11000 11 11,00 . 3,567 3567 567 (3,56 2,292 2292 2 292 (2,29 1,833 1833 833 (1,83 1,447 1447 447 (1,44 1000 1,00 831 (83 628 (62 606 (60 520 (52 50 users science health biology law anthropology education others http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ faunajbrjgovbr //fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ 201 8 202 13369 13 133,6 12513 12 125,1 82.3% (82.3 10200 10 00 102,0 7.69% 76 6 (7.69 1100 11,0 3,56 356 56 (3,5 2,29 229 29 (2,2 1,83 183 83 (1,8 1,44 144 44 (1,4 100 1,0 (8 62 (6 60 52 (5 5 http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br 20 1336 133, 1251 125, 82.3 (82. 1020 0 102, 7.69 (7.6 110 11, 3,5 35 (3, 2,2 22 (2, 1,8 18 (1, 1,4 14 4 ( 82. Abstract There is scarcity of information on the determinants of periodontitis in Latin America and Caribbean countries. We conducted a comprehensive review of studies examining the association of smoking and diabetes with periodontitis outcomes in this region. We searched for population-based, cross-sectional and prospective cohort studies from Latin America and the Caribbean region that reported on the association between smoking or diabetes and periodontitis. Databases were searched up to October 2023 by two reviewers. Subsequently, two authors independently conducted a rigorous data extraction process, focusing on study characteristics, the definition of exposures, and periodontitis outcomes, including measures of association and main findings. The results revealed a significant association between smoking and periodontitis, with a stronger effect observed in heavy smokers. Conversely, while some studies observed a higher prevalence of periodontitis among diabetic individuals, the association between diabetes and periodontitis was not significant after adjusting for confounding factors. These findings underscore a significant research gap in population-based studies on the effect of smoking and diabetes on periodontitis within Latin American and Caribbean countries, particularly when it comes to cohort studies. Addressing these gaps is crucial for a deeper understanding of these associations, which could lead to more effective prevention and treatment strategies in the region. countries populationbased, populationbased population based, based crosssectional cross sectional 202 reviewers Subsequently process characteristics exposures smokers Conversely individuals factors associations 20 2

This study investigates the potential of Morita-Baylis-Hillman adducts derived from carvacrol as anticancer agents. The synthesis process, involving the reaction of aromatic aldehydes with carvacrol acrylate as a Michael acceptor, resulted in stable adducts with impressive yields ranging from 60 to 92%, achieved within a maximum reaction time of 24 h. Through a screening process utilizing 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) test, compound 6, identified as the acrylate/2-naphthyl adduct, emerged as the most active within the series among twelve compounds tested. Specifically, compound 6 exhibited a remarkably potent impact on neuroblastoma cell lines, particularly SH-SY5Y cells, with half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 8.7 µM after 72 h (42 times more potent than carvacrol, IC50 = 374.1 μM). The exploration of the selectivity index (SI) against normal cell lines demonstrated an outstanding SI of 4.28 compared to other compounds. Mechanistic studies on SH-SY5Y cells revealed a concentration-dependent apoptotic effect attributed to caspase 3/7 activation. In silico modeling showcased favorable pharmacokinetic properties for compound 6, including effective absorption after oral administration. Assessment of toxicity of compound 6 profile using brine shrimp and the Irwin test indicated low toxicity, highlighting its potential for future anticancer agent development. Abstract The family Gripopterygidae occurs in the Austral Hemisphere and comprises about 330 species within 57 genera. About 110 species belonging to 28 genera are native to South America. Some are endemic to the Andean Region, while others reside in the Neotropical Region. In this latter region, Gripopterygidae has primarily been documented in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, inland areas, and specific regions in northeastern Argentina, southern Paraguay, and Uruguay. Our research involved examining specimens from diverse Brazilian locations and compiling data sourced from the Plecoptera literature of the Neotropical Region. In this study, we present a comprehensive list of 62 Gripopterygidae species across four genera documented in Neotropical Region: 1) Gripopteryx Pictet, comprising 18 described species; 2) Guaranyperla Froehlich, comprising three species; 3) Paragripopteryx Enderlein, which includes 15 species, and 4) Tupiperla Froehlich, with 26 species. Additionally, we have morphologically characterized a specimen of Gripopteryx elisae Illies collected in Santa Catarina State, Brazil. We provide detailed information about the life stages associated with each species, documented records by administrative and natural areas, and information about the institutions housing the type series of Neotropical gripopterygids. 33 5 11 2 America Region region Forest areas Argentina Paraguay Uruguay study 6 1 Pictet Froehlich 3 Enderlein 4 Additionally State Brazil gripopterygids

Abstract Objective: To determine the correlation of conventional and diffusion-weighted imaging findings on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain, based on Visually AcceSAble Rembrandt Images (VASARI) criteria, with the histopathological grading of gliomas: low-grade or high-grade. Materials and Methods: Preoperative MRI scans of 178 patients with brain gliomas and pathological confirmation were rated by two neuroradiologists for tumor size, location, and tumor morphology, using a standardized imaging feature set based on the VASARI criteria. Results: In the univariate analysis, more than half of the MRI characteristics evaluated showed a significant association with the tumor grade. The characteristics most significantly associated with the tumor grade were hemorrhage; restricted diffusion; pial invasion; enhancement; and a non-contrast-enhancing tumor crossing the midline. In a multivariable regression model, the presence of enhancement and hemorrhage maintained a significant association with high tumor grade. The absence of contrast enhancement and restricted diffusion were associated with the presence of an isocitrate dehydrogenase gene mutation. Conclusion: Our data illustrate that VASARI MRI features, especially intratumoral hemorrhage, contrast enhancement, and multicentricity, correlate strongly with glial tumor grade. Abstract Objective: To evaluate the capacity of fetal Doppler, maternal, and obstetric characteristics for the prediction of cesarean section due to intrapartum fetal compromise (IFC), a 5-min Apgar score < 7, and an adverse perinatal outcome (APO), in a high-risk population. Materials and Methods: This was a prospective cohort study involving 613 singleton pregnant women, admitted for labor induction or at the beginning of spontaneous labor, who underwent Doppler ultrasound within the last 72 h before delivery. The outcome measures were cesarean section due to IFC, a 5-min Apgar score < 7, and any APO. Results: We found that maternal characteristics were neither associated with nor predictors of an APO. Abnormal umbilical artery (UA) resistance index (RI) and the need for intrauterine resuscitation were found to be significant risk factors for cesarean section due to IFC (p = 0.03 and p < 0.0001, respectively). A UA RI > the 95th percentile and a cerebroplacental ratio (CPR) < 0.98 were also found to be predictors of cesarean section due to IFC. Gestational age and a UA RI > 0.84 were found to be predictors of a 5-min Apgar score < 7 for newborns at < 29 and ≥ 29 weeks, respectively. The UA RI and CPR presented moderate accuracy in predicting an APO, with areas under the ROC curve of 0.76 and 0.72, respectively. Conclusion: A high UA RI appears to be a significant predictor of an APO. The CPR seems to be predictive of cesarean section due to IFC and of an APO in late preterm and term newborns. Abstract This study evaluates the economic viability of sheep finishing systems on irrigated Tamani grass pasture under continuous stocking, using castor bean cake. Four production systems were simulated: sheep supplemented with soybean meal on pasture fertilized with urea (SMUR), sheep supplemented with detoxified castor bean cake on pasture fertilized with urea (CCdUR), sheep supplemented with soybean meal on pasture fertilized with in natura castor bean cake (SMCC) and sheep supplemented with detoxified castor bean cake on pasture fertilized with in natura castor bean cake (CCdCC). A minimum unit of 3 hectares and an average slaughter weight of 28 kg were considered. A minimum selling price, at which the least profitable system would become profitable, was stablished: US$ 2.38 and US$ 4.45/kg per kilogram of body weight and carcass weight equivalent, adopting a minimum rate of return of 3.5% per year, based on the Selic rate. The costs for organic fertilization were 46.01% higher than in systems using chemical fertilization. The selling of live animals was not attractive in any of the systems evaluated, and the opposite was observed for the selling of carcasses and non-carcass components. System SMUR proved to be more profitable, with a gain of US$ 0.53 per kg carcass. stocking simulated SMUR, , (SMUR) CCdUR, CCdUR (CCdUR) SMCC (SMCC CCdCC. CCdCC . ABSTRACT The order Plecoptera comprises nearly 4,400 species of freshwater insects known for their specific temperature requirements. In Brazil, there are 207 valid extant species, with 172 (83%) being endemic, and particularly the genus Anacroneuria is well-represented. This study aims to present a comprehensive overview of the taxonomy of Brazilian Plecoptera using a scientometric approach. Initially, European authors dominated the taxonomy, describing 67 species by the mid-20th century, but Brazilian researchers, notably Claudio Gilberto Froehlich, have made significant contributions, describing 82 species. Type-specimens of Brazilian species are mostly held in Brazilian institutions, with the MZSP in São Paulo housing the majority (79.8%). São Paulo is the state with the highest number of species (67), followed by Rio de Janeiro (47) and Santa Catarina (47). The states of Alagoas, Paraíba, and Rio Grande do Norte have no recorded Plecoptera species. Among Brazilian terrestrial biomes, the Atlantic Forest exhibits the highest number of species, with 140 known species, followed by the Brazilian Savanna (57). The Hydrographic Region of Southeast Atlantic is that with the largest number of species (82). Limited data exist on the immature stages of Plecoptera across most genera, representing only a quarter of the current diversity in Brazil. Additionally, only 9.7% of the species have available molecular sequence data. Despite these challenges, the Plecoptera in Brazil demonstrate remarkable species diversity, with a significant proportion of endemism. Both European and Brazilian researchers have played crucial roles in advancing the taxonomy and understanding of this fascinating group of insects. 4400 4 400 4,40 requirements 20 17 83% 83 (83% endemic wellrepresented. wellrepresented well represented. represented well-represented approach Initially 6 mid20th midth mid 20th th century Froehlich contributions 8 Typespecimens Type specimens institutions 79.8%. 798 79.8% . 79 (79.8%) 67, , (67) 47 (47 47. ABSTRACT Lizards of the genus Pristidactylus distribute in southern South America (Chile and Argentina). In Chile, there are four endemic species (P. alvaroi, P. torquatus, P. valeriae and P. volcanensis) that distribute in the central-south zone of the country. We performed a Bayesian analysis with the mitochondrial gene cytochrome b to assess the phylogenetic position of these four species, which shows that they comprise a high supported clade that is separated from the other species of the genus.

ABSTRACT Objective: evaluate the effectiveness of MPI to predict mortality in patients with peritonitis in Santa Casa de Misericordia de Vitoria Hospital (HSCMV). Methods: a longitudinal observational cohort retrospectively study, with a sample of 75 patients diagnosed with peritonitis between January 2010 to December 2 of 2015, in HSCMV and with all the necessary criteria for the calculation of IPM. Results: we found a profile of the patients, 33 female and 42 male, mean age 42 years, 11 deaths and 14.67% mortality percentage. Comparing the MPI variables into two groups (survivors and deceased) was found that older than 50 years, presence of malignancy and patients with organ dysfunction have statistical significance for mortality, with p<0.05. The MPI ranged between 4-41 points, with average of 21.2 points. However, among the dead, the score ranged from 23 to 41, with a mean of 32.8. Therefore, the cutoff point of 27 points was established by evaluating the best value of Kappa concordance index, and through it were calculated: 90.90% sensitivity and specificity of 78.13% by the ROC curve. Conclusion: based on these results, it was established that the MPI was effective in estimating the risk of death when the index reaches values = 27 points. Categorizing patients into different risk groups helps in determining a better prognosis and defining operative risk, thus contributing to the choice of the surgical procedure nature.

ABSTRACT. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of completely replacing soybean meal (SM) with castor cake detoxified (DCC) with two alkaline products on the nitrogen balance and hepatic and renal function in goat kids. Goat kids of two breeds, Saanen and Anglo Nubian, with an initial body weight of 16.2 ± 0.67 kg, and confined during the growth phase, were used. The treatments consisted of three diets: one based on SM and the other two based on castor cake detoxified with Ca(OH)2 or NaOH. Twenty-four goats kids were distributed in a completely randomized design using a 3 x 2 factorial scheme (diet x breed) with four replicates per combination. The experimental period lasted for 270 days. Consumed nitrogen, fecal nitrogen, urinary nitrogen, retained nitrogen, and nitrogen balance were influenced (p < 0.05) by diets. There was significant effect of diets (p < 0.05) on creatinine, direct bilirubin, urea, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase and gamma-glutamyltransferase blood levels, however without any negative changes involving renal or hepatic dysfunction. Inclusion of castor cake in the diet of goats kids in confinement is an attractive option, considering that goats kids use does not cause hepatic and renal alterations, suggesting that SM can be completely replaced. NaOH DCC stands in the substitution of soybean meal, because in spite of decreasing the consumption of nitrogen provides the same retention of soybean meal.
