Resumo Os materiais frios possuem maiores valores de refletância solar e menores, apesar de elevados, de emitância térmica comparados aos revestimentos convencionais, desta forma, aquecem menos suas superfícies. Assim, o objetivo foi identificar os elementos químicos presentes nas superfícies frias que influenciam na refletância solar e emitância térmica. Para isso, foram medidas a refletância espectral e a emitância térmica com métodos e equipamentos normatizados pelo Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) de 23 revestimentos frios elastoméricos do mercado brasileiro e analisada a composição química das superfícies com EDS (detector de energia dispersiva de raios-x) acoplado ao microscópio eletrônico de varredura por emissão de campo (SEM-FEG). A presença do elemento químico metálico (titânio) em maiores quantidades nas superfícies não foi determinante para menores valores de emitância térmica. Abstract Cool materials have higher values of solar reflectance and lower values of thermal emittance, although still high when compared to conventional coatings, thus, their surfaces are less heated. In this regard, the goal was to identify the chemical elements present on cool surfaces that influence solar reflectance and thermal emittance. To this end, the spectral reflectance and the thermal emittance were measured with methods and equipment standardized by the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) of 23 elastomeric cool coatings commercialized in the Brazilian market, and the chemical composition of the surfaces with EDS (Energy-dispersive X-ray detector) coupled to the field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) was analyzed. Resumo O uso de materiais de baixa absortância solar no envelope construtivo tem se mostrado uma estratégia eficaz para otimizar o desempenho termoenergético de edificações em locais com alta incidência de radiação solar. No entanto, a capacidade refletiva dos revestimentos se modifica ao longo do tempo, devido à degradação pela ação das intempéries e à deposição de material particulado, com prejuízos ao desempenho térmico da vedação ao longo de sua vida útil. Assim, determinar os efeitos da degradação da absortância solar tornou-se primordial para prever a capacidade de manutenção das propriedades refletivas de telhas e tintas com o tempo. Com o objetivo de contribuir com pesquisas nessa temática, este artigo apresenta o projeto, construção e operação de uma estação de envelhecimento natural para avaliação da degradação da absortância solar de telhas e revestimentos expostos ao tempo, em conjunto com o monitoramento simultâneo e contínuo de temperaturas superficiais com termopares. Os resultados obtidos para 28 telhas expostas por 2 anos indicam forte correlação (R² = 0,81) entre as temperaturas superficiais e a absortância solar ao longo do tempo, assim como o potencial de uso da estação de envelhecimento natural para análise conjunta da degradação da absortância e o desempenho térmico dos revestimentos.

Abstract The use of materials with low solar absorptance on the building envelope has shown to be an effective strategy to optimise the thermal and energy performance of buildings located in climates with incidence of high solar energy. However, the ability of coatings to reflect solar energy changes over time, mainly due to degradation caused by natural weathering and dust or soot deposition, leading to loss of building thermal performance. Therefore, assessing the effects of solar absorptance degradation is crucial to predict the ability to maintain the reflective properties of coatings over time. With the aim of contributing with research on this subject, this paper presents the design, construction, and operation of a natural aging rack to evaluate tiles and coatings exposed to natural weathering conditions, with simultaneous and continuous surface temperature measurements with thermocouples. The results obtained for 28 tiles exposed for 2 years indicate a strong correlation (R² = 0,81) between surface temperatures and solar absorptance over time, as well as the usability of the natural weathering rack to assess solar absorptance degradation of tiles and surface temperature measurements.

Resumo As telhas de fibrocimento, ao longo de sua vida útil, passam por três processos de envelhecimento natural que podem alterar a absortância solar de sua superfície e o seu desempenho térmico: a carbonatação, a eflorescência e o desenvolvimento de fungos. Com o objetivo de identificar o impacto desses processos sobre sua absortância e seu desempenho térmico, esta pesquisa incluiu três etapas: a) determinação dos processos de envelhecimento natural em telhas com idades de 28 dias e após 36 meses de exposição; b) medição de temperaturas superficiais por termografia; e c) ensaios de refletância com espectrofotômetro para cálculo da absortância solar. Os resultados indicaram que, após 36 meses de envelhecimento natural, a carbonatação reduziu as absortâncias e as temperaturas superficiais das telhas quando comparadas com as telhas novas de 28 dias. Entretanto, as telhas com fungos após 36 meses apresentaram aumento nas absortâncias e temperaturas superficiais, indicando que a presença de fungos pode incrementar os ganhos de calor solar pelas edificações. Os resultados comprovam que os processos de envelhecimento natural de telhas de fibrocimento alteram consideravelmente seu desempenho térmico ao longo da vida útil de uma edificação.

Abstract Fiber cement roof tiles undergo natural aging processes that may change their surface solar absorptance and thermal performance: carbonation, efflorescence and fungal development. With the aim of identifying the impact of these processes on their absorptance and thermal performance, this research study was undertaken in three stages: a) determination of the aging processes in tiles naturally aged for 28 days and after 36 months of exposure; b) surface temperature measurements by infrared thermography; and c) spectral reflectance measurements with a spectrophotometer to calculate the solar absorptance of the tiles. The results indicate that the carbonation process after 36 months of natural aging reduced the tiles' absorptance and surface temperatures when compared to the new 28 days' tiles. However, tiles with fungal growth after 36 months of exposure showed increased initial absorptance and surface temperatures, indicating that fungal growth can increase building solar heat gains. The results indicated that the natural aging processes of fiber cement tiles considerably affect its thermal performance over the building's lifetime.
